Community is essential. It's how God designed for our lives to be. We are not creatures of isolation, and, more than that, community is the design for us to grow spiritually. If you are going to truly walk in the way, you need to be connected.

Most of the time we don't notice all of our movements, because everything is moving at such a fast pace all around us. But if we choose to stop in the middle of the commotion, we begin to understand how much of it is unnecessary. Beyond that, we will see what is distracting us from what really matters.

Have you ever been a part of something, but you never gave 100%? It'd be easy to understand an "extra" actor in a play not dedicating his life to it. He still wants to be in the credits, but other things may take priority.
We treat Jesus like that a lot. We say we want to be his. We want to have life. Yet, we don't live completely for him. We want to be affiliated with His story, but He doesn't have our whole heart. Here's a hard truth: You can't live half-way for Jesus. It's all or nothing.
This parable makes that explicitly clear. Here, Jesus challenges us to be faithful in how we live for him. No matter how important you think you are, you are to use what you have been given for His Kingdom.

In today's world, gardening is a hobby. Crop production is done on massive scale and is no longer a skill that most of society uses. That is not true of Jesus's day and age. Because of that, Jesus used things that related to them, not us, when he talked.

What is a promise? On the receiving end, it's an expectation of surety for the future. Granted, that can be negative or positive. Being promised to be disciplined as a child isn't exactly fun. There are certainly promises of discipline in the Bible for God's people.
But God's promises to his children are always for their good. God's promises give us hope and peace that we are loved and cared for and known. They give us the courage to press on in faith, not because of the gift, but because of the one who gives. God keeps his promises, and, through David, He teaches us to trust him.

If you have a sibling, you know that you can be raised in the same circumstance and turn out completely different from one another. Certain personality traits and dispositions influence your response to similar variables with different results.
The same thing exists in relationship with God. He displays himself to us all, but we do not always respond the same way. For David and Saul, they have similar stories about how they are raised up by God to be King from nothing, but they couldn't be more different as kings. Which of them will you model yourself after?

We all know the story of David and Goliath. Pop culture still uses the analogy in sports when the underdog goes up against the favorite to win. And here's what we know about the biblical account: the one who God is with should never be counted as the underdog.

The most referenced Old Testament figure in the New Testament is King David. His story is the fulcrum of the Old Testament. The unification of Judah and Israel, the promise of the Messiah from his line, and the fate of humanity all hang in the balance of this man's time on earth.
But it's not about David. David's story is God's story. It's about how God uses the most unlikely people for His purposes and for His glory. This is the beginning of how God took a young shepherd boy and used him to change the course of history.

Here in Louisiana, a staple food during the cooler months is gumbo. When the temperatures drop, the gumbo pots fire up! Each bite provides a little bit of soul-warmth and hope... Maybe that's a little strong, but it's so good.
But what nobody wants is gumbo that gets room temperature. The ingredients start to coagulate. The aroma dies down. It's just not a pleasant experience. Gumbo is supposed to be HOT. That's how it serves its purpose.
Christians are supposed to be the same way. We serve a purpose. Hot or cold, either one, but we can't be lukewarm. That's the message to Laodicea. And when we don't serve our purpose, we disgust our savior.
We hope this message challenges all of us to live a life of purpose for Jesus.

When you think of the perfect spouse, what do you imagine?
Guess what? It doesn't matter what you think, because no one will ever fit an ideological "perfect" that you create. But even thought they may not be perfect, respond the right way, or value the same thing you do, they can and should be faithful.
In Christianity, we know the target is holiness, but we won't always be perfect. Yet, while we may not be perfect as Christ's church, we can still be faithful. That is the message to Philadelphia, and it's the message to us.
Young adult, be faithful.

Remember that time that Jesus made a whip and went into the temple flipping tables? That was calculated. It takes a long time to make a whip. He knew what he was doing, and it was an anger filled with righteousness.
A common misconception about Jesus is that He is non-confrontational and unconditionally accepting of all people's preferences. This is simply not the Jesus of the Bible. But the Jesus of the Bible is 100% consistent. That same Jesus in the temple is the same Jesus writing the letter to Thyatira. He is Holy. He is Lord. And He is angry at what the church has become.
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." We pray this blesses you and challenges you.

Pressure has a way of breaking down the strongest things in rapid time. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what a pressure cooker is designed to do. What we find out in our spiritual lives is that there is enormous pressure surrounding us. The pressure tries to break down the standard of righteousness and holiness in our pursuit of Jesus.
This pressure is nothing new, in fact it's significantly less for us than for the early church. Pergamum was no different. But we all face the same two choices: stand strong or give in. Jesus was serious about it to them, and he's serious about it to us.

Unfortunately, there are sentiments, statements, and theologies within the religious scope that have done the same. They may seem harmless on the surface, but underneath is dangerous implication. Throughout this series, we will explore several of these common "Christianese" statements that may be half-truths or complete lies, either way, they are very manipulative and deceptive. They need to be thought out, addressed, and corrected.

Fractured relationships are part of the sinful condition of humanity. We have all had them, and for some of us, the damage done seems irreparable.
As Paul closes out the letter to the Colossians, there is a man mentioned that is unlike the rest. His name is Onesimus. Onesimus has a past that is haunted by severed relationships, and his condition is not like any we have today.
Jump in as Chad walks us through what we can learn from Onesimus and how we should rise to the call of reconciliation and obedience. And for the one who has been the runaway from Jesus, who doesn't know how to approach that broken relationship, Jesus is ready to welcome you home.

What does it mean to be a Christian? A lot of people think it's a mere intellectual agreement that you agree with 'these' statements. But you can agree with something and not act on it. You can agree and, yet, your life testify against you that you actually believe it. We can agree that exercising is healthy for us. But if you don't ever exercise and your body deteriorates, did you actually believe it?
Following Jesus does require agreement with doctrine, but it also involves patterning our lives, taking action, in a tangible way. Following Jesus impacts our relationships, our dispositions, our ability to handle difficult situations, and it calls us to higher purpose in life.
Following Jesus elevates others above ourselves.

We all have to make decisions to do things that don't sound fun and definitely aren't easy. When you think about the life of a Christian, it doesn't sound fun or easy when we are told we have to die to be one. This isn't a physical death, but one that is a complete termination of the former way of life. Jesus doesn't fix your life. He gives you a completely new one. For the new one to live, the other must die.
But this isn't easy. It takes conscious effort. Jesus tells us that we will have to die daily. Choosing righteousness over selfishness goes against our sinful nature. Choosing others over me is not the normal way we operate. It's a tall order, but it's the standard for the Christian. In order to live for Christ, you must die to yourself.
"For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God." -Colossians 3:3
This is the Supreme Reality of the Christian faith.
Are you ready to follow Jesus? Then it's time to die.

The key to a good lie is to make it as close to the truth as possible. It's an undercurrent of falsehood small enough to go unnoticed, yet grave enough to corrupt the entire truth.
In Colossae, Paul is dealing with false teachings that subvert the gospel and minimize Christ. These teachings don't DENY Jesus, but they make him lesser. They don't deny faith, but they make it one component of many. They blend the truth with lies in a palatable way.
The same issue exists in the Christian sphere today. So what do we do? How can we prepare to spot the fake? Easy. Become an expert at identifying the real thing. You don't have to know everything about everything. You just have to be firm in one thing.
So are you going to chase after the real Jesus, or are you going to keep following fakes?

While this may not exactly be a "feel good" message, it is one that should bring life as it brings perspective. As a Christian, you should expect suffering. It's part of the world because we are part of this world. But that suffering has a greater purpose, and understanding that purpose should lead to a joy in the midst of the trial.
That type of joy in suffering is typically found in someone who is a mature believer. Becoming mature in Christ doesn't happen by chance, though. Maturity comes from discipleship, and discipleship doesn't happen outside of community. Someone who is ready to follow Jesus is also ready to plug in with His church.

Ricky Bobby's dad famously said "If you ain't first, you're last." We find out later that you can be second, third, fourth, heck (edit, obviously) you can even be fifth! But the fact of the matter is that if you aren't first, you aren't first. If something isn't first, it doesn't get the trophy, the honor, the status, or any other accolade. To be first is to show supremacy.
This passage, Colossians 1:15-23, talks about Jesus being first and demanding first place in our lives. So here's the question, and Jared asks it perfectly:
Is Jesus supreme in your life? Either he is, or he isn't, and there is no in-between.

That's because the Bible uses those phrases, and the first part of Colossians 1 is a call upward to do those things. Produce evidence that you live for Jesus.
