This was a talk I gave for the Armor of God Men's Group on April 20th, 2023 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church's Life Center. In it I go over what fasting is, giving definitions and explanations from Aquinas, De Sales, and Benedict XVI. I also give a history of the Church's fasting disciplines from the Old Testament to the present day. Lastly, I offer some reflections on how these previous disciplines can spur us on to fast with more intentionality today. You can find the slides for the talk here: https://www.catholicisminthecar.com/writings/presentations#h.and371qnif4kArmor of God Men's Group Website: https://armingmen.com/The Original YouTube video can be found here: https://youtu.be/aSIiWp2UlrA--- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/parker-zurbuch6/support

In this episode, I seek to clear up some of the confusion about this topic and offer solutions. In this episode I give my opinions regarding the Liturgy Wars within the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church (the Traditional Latin Mass vs. the Novus Ordo).

The Traditional Latin Mass currently in use is more accurately described as the "Roman Missal of 1962."

The Novus Ordo is more accurately described as the "Roman Missal of 1969."

Original Video:  https://youtu.be/c1IBKtH0IbAThis is a continuation of our last episode on tensions in the liturgy wars; except this time i examine the tensions that I see in the conservative side of the conversation.   Please know that my views expressed here are fluid and works in progress. Particularly, my claim that "the Novus Ordo breeds chaos" is not a hill I am willing to die on, and also needs to be understood in its context. It is a statement that sounds harsh, but the word "chaos" is used in a particular way, meaning that the Novus Ordo seems to err on the side of "de-rubricization" or "de-regulation." I view this as a flaw in the way that the Novus Ordo was constructed.  I also view the fact that the Novus Ordo can be factually considered to have been "constructed by a committee" to be an unfortunate reality of history that is not in the Novus Ordo's favor.www.catholicisminthecar.com--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/parker-zurbuch6/support

In this episode we discuss some of the tensions that I see in these discussions about the Liturgy. This first part mainly focuses upon the tensions that I view on the "Traditionalist" side of these debates.

In this video, I discuss the question "Can the Entire Roman Rite (Itself) be Abrogated? For that matter, can the Byzantine, Coptic, Ambrosian, Dominican, etc. Rites by abrogated?  This is an underlying premise that is assumed in the question "Can the TLM be abrogated?"  It is a necessary question to be asked, and it's propositions need to be examined.

This episode gives my analysis of the state of the question as regards the Traditional Latin Mass: Can the Pope abrogate the TLM? Is the Novus Ordo Missae a continuation of the Roman Rite?  These questions, and more, are valuable parts of this episode.  I also mention my social media discussions with Dr. Peter Kwasniewski and Mr. Gregory DiPippo.

This video is my initial one regarding the "liturgy wars." I am relatively new to these particular discussions, but am attempting to remedy some of the unnecessary conflict involved therein.  I have been hesitant to make a video on this topic, lest it contribute to the disconcerting lack of communication I see. I am not a fan of most of the rebuttal videos circulating back-and-forth in this field, so this video is not a rebuttal to anyone. It is simply a plea from one lay Catholic to his brothers and sisters in Christ.

In this episode we discuss my view of human nature, and specifically the relationship between the soul and the body.

The council of Vienne defined that the soul is "the form of the body."

The 5th Lateran Council clarified the above definition and said that the soul is the form of the body, but that it is also "immortal."

In this episode we discuss the social issue of Homosexuality.

NOTE: While it is (strictly-speaking) not sinful for two persons of the same sex to live together, as long as they do not act out sexually with each other -- even if they had been in an erotic relationship previously -- it very well may be the "near occasion of sin." In which case, it would not be PRUDENT for the two persons to live under the same roof. "Lest the dog return to his vomit" (Proverbs 26:11). This situation would need to be one where consultation with one's pastor would be necessary. Again, strictly-speaking, it is not sinful for two persons of the same sex to live under one roof -- even if they had been in an erotic relationship in the past; however, it may not be a prudent thing for them to do and may be the near occasion of sin.

In this episode, we discuss the social issue of Gun Control.

I am still working out my exact view on this issue, but it seems to me that there are three (3) main principles regarding Gun Control:

  1. People have a right to defend themselves.

  2. Someone who cannot properly and safely use a gun should not be allowed to use/own one.

  3. Guns used for farming, hunting, etc. should always be allowed for human survival and flourishing.

In this episode we discuss the controversial (at least in many Western nations) social issue of "Immigration."

We go over my opinion on this issue, which hinges in how I see human beings as having three (3) main rights:

  1. The Right to Life

  2. The Right to Dignity

  3. The "Potential" Right to Thrive

The first two (2) of these rights (to life and dignity) can never be forfeited or taken away. The third right (to thrive) can be either forfeited or taken away, if the person poses a threat to themselves or society, or if the person is born into un-ideal circumstances which never allow them the opportunity to thrive. So, this right to thrive is a "contingent" and/or "potential" right.

One extreme on this issue vies for strict rules regarding immigration (closed border policies), and the other extreme says that we should be very lenient (open border policies). I propose a solution that, I think, is a principled third-way between these extremes, and I believe that this view is backed by the principles of Catholic social teachings.

This episode looks at the social issue of suicide. While suicide is often discussed in an emotionally-charged context (as it should be, in most cases), we discuss the issue by taking a step back and looking at it from a philosophical, detached perspective. Please take this episode for what it is: a look at suicide from a "purely" rational perspective.

In this episode, we discuss the issue of personhood -- particularly, as involves a person's ability to think abstractly. We argue for the importance of this ability in defining "Personhood," as opposed to other kinds of being, and further elucidate what we mean by "abstract" thought.

This episode is quite philosophical, so buckle up! While it may be a rigorous episode, it is an important one, because the question of "What is a Person?" is incredibly salient to our world today -- especially, as regards the social issues of abortion, contraception, euthanasia, etc. In this episode we discuss the question of Personhood, and what makes you what you are. We also discuss my concept for how human beings are different from other types of life -- which many may find interesting.

This episode continues our discussion on why I think that the reform of the Liturgy in the Western rite of the Catholic Church should be a primary priority for Western Catholics. This second part of the series takes a particular look at the allowance for the usage of vernacular languages in the Mass, and why I think (in the Western rite) that Latin should be retained as the primary language of the liturgy.

This episode comprises the first part of my defense on why our communal, liturgical worship is more important than both our personal prayer life and the service to our community. We discuss Pope Benedict XVI's hermeneutic (interpretation) of continuity in regards to the liturgy, and the Second Vatican Council's document on the liturgy "Sacrosanctum Concillium," highlighting its calls for more participation by the laity, and a reintroduction of the vernacular language to the liturgy.  The subject of the use of vernacular language in the liturgy will be taken up in Part II.

Let's Reclaim Catholic Culture! This will certainly be a controversial episode of this podcast.

If the Catholic Church wants to be a vehicle of salvation for the world, then it needs to be authentically itself. How does our Sunday liturgy convey what we believe? If 99% of Catholics get their view of the Church from Sunday mass -- how are we conveying to them what Catholicism is by it?

This episode is a continuation of episode #95 on the subject of "proper reception of Holy Communion by the laity." We specifically discuss the examples of Enoch and Elijah in the Old Testament, how the Incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ gives us a model for sacramental reception of Him, and we discuss the three (3) levels of "worship" distinguished within Catholicism: Dulia (that "worship" due to saints), Hyper-Dulia ("worship" due to Mary), and Latria (true Worship given to God alone).

In this episode, I discuss three (3) facets of the Gospel.

I apologize for the wind sounds in this episode. I try to edit them out as much as I can, but sometimes it is unavoidable. This podcast is recorded in a car -- wind is something I have to fight with often while editing, and sometimes the wind wins the fight.

In Summary: First (1st), the Gospel regards our present life: that we have been saved by Jesus Christ on the Cross, and are now able to unite our sufferings with His for the greater glory of God and our fellow man. Secondly (2nd), the Gospel tells us that the gates of Heaven were opened for us via the sacrifice of Christ -- allowing us access to the beatific vision for all of eternity. The Third (3rd) aspect of the Gospel informs us that we will not only live on spiritually, but bodily. The resurrection of Jesus shows us that we, too, will resurrect at the end of time, and we will then be reunited with our bodies forever, in Christ Jesus.

What is the Gospel? In this episode, I look at this question from (what I think is) a unique perspective. I discuss what I think is the greatest aspect of the Good News of Jesus Christ: Redemptive Suffering. In this episode, I look deeply into the reason why Jesus Christ died on the Cross. I mention Blessed John Duns Scotus' answer to these questions in this episode, as well as my own synthesis of them.

I Begin this episode by discussing my own credentials -- or rather, my LACK of credentials. Take or leave what you want :) I mention some good resources for Catholics who want to revitalize their faith. This episode also continues our discussion of Catholic Mega-Churches by focusing on solutions to this problem. The particular solution that I offer is for diocesan priests to live in community with each other. I also mention some issues that have gone on (publicly) in my own diocese which seem to be rooted in this lack of priestly community.

Is Suffering Necessary for Happiness? I argue it is, and explain my position in this episode. Many people try to deal with their suffering by replacing that suffering with pleasure, but do not realize that in almost all cases -- too much pleasure turns into suffering. We also discuss the concept of Natural Law as defined by the Catholic Church, and why a return to natural virtue ethics (even if not Christian ethics) would be a huge improvement for modern culture.

This episode examines Redemptive Suffering from a Natural (Secular) perspective, and what ways can suffering be redemptive (that good can be brought out of it)? I mention topics such as hedonism (seeking pleasure as the greatest good), and how it is the antithesis of Redemptive Suffering; as well as how Exercise is a great example of a Natural form of Redemptive Suffering.

I also mention the YouTube channel and podcast "Controversies in Church History" hosted by Dr. Darrick Taylor, PhD and his podcasts on the history of the Traditional Catholic Movement and many other topics.

In this episode, we discuss the issue of Suffering; and in particular, we discuss how suffering can be redemptive both from a natural and supernatural point-of-view via the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. We also discuss this issue of Redemptive Suffering as regards the various Protestant understandings of it. In regard to this, I mention Dr. Gavin Ortland (Host of the YouTube channel "Truth Unites") and another mentor I had in High School; both of whom are Protestants whose insights have given me much respect for my Protestant brothers and sisters in Christ.

This episode discusses the Franciscan School of Theology's emphasis on "Voluntarism," which means that they emphasize the human person's will over their intellect. We also discuss St. Bonaventure's idea of a Tripartite (Three-Part) soul containing Memory, Intellect, and Will; the concept of Univocity within the writings of Blessed John Duns Scotus; how all of these relate to the Franciscan understanding of human nature in relation to God; and we make comparisons between the Franciscan School and the Dominican (Thomistic) School.

In this episode, I discuss some of my thoughts on the liturgical reforms which were promulgated in the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. This includes what I think was wrong about said reforms, and also what was correct. Subjects such as Latin, Liturgical Readings, the Permanent Diaconate, lay involvement in the liturgy, etc. are all mentioned in this episode.

This episode discusses the sacrament of Holy Orders (to the Deaconate, Priesthood, and Bishopric), and how this sacrament effects all of our spiritual lives.

NOTE: I said that the sacrament of Baptism is the only sacrament which does not need a clergy member present, ordinarily. This is not entirely true. The sacrament of Matrimony can be witnessed by a lay person instead of a clergy member. In extreme circumstances, the sacrament of Matrimony could not even require a witness (if the man and woman were on a deserted island, for example).

Why would you want to listen to some one talk about some old, crusty ancient philosophers?? Well, listen up and find out! These three ancient philosophers have a lot they can teach us! Even though they were all pagans, they certainly had a greater sense of morality and the good than "pagans" today.

This episode examines the terms of Substance and Substratum as used in Aristotle's works. We also go over what it means to define something, and what to do with terms that cannot be defined.

Substance is "that which cannot be predicated of something and nothing can be predicated of it." Substratum is what undergirds certain realities. I am just beginning my understanding of these concepts, and I discuss how I may be understanding these things incorrectly. However, this episode is an example of how I am trying to record my intellectual journey.

This episode provides an overview of Aristotle's book "The Categories," and how it relates to the subjects of Realism, Platonism (The philosophy of Plato), Matter & Form, Substance, etc. We also examine what defines human nature, our bodies, and our souls according to Aristotle and how this idea of human nature contrasts to one of Dualism (where body and soul are separate entities). We also discus briefly what happens to human beings after they die; according to Catholic theology and informed by this philosophy of Aristotle.

In this episode we discuss how Catholics (especially Western, Roman Catholics) need to recover their reverence for the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

The document which I referenced (regarding the primary form of receiving communion being on the tongue) is "Memoriali Domini" promulgated by the Congregation for Divine Worship (CDW) on May 29, 1969.

Memoriali Domini (On the Manner of Distributing Communion): https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/library/instruction-on-the-manner-of-distributing-holy-communion-2195

EXCERPT from Memoriali Domini: "...the custom was established of the minister placing a particle of consecrated bread on the tongue of the communicant. This method of distributing holy communion must be retained, taking the present situation of the Church in the entire world into account, not merely because it has many centuries of-tradition behind it, but especially because it expresses the faithful's reverence for the Eucharist. The custom does not detract in any way from the personal dignity of those who approach this great sacrament: it is part of that preparation that is needed for the most fruitful reception of the Body of the Lord."

This episode examines issues regarding the Human Soul after Death. Does the person survive without their body, or is it just the soul that survives? This is a lively debate in Catholic philosophy and theology -- the debate between Suvivalism and Corruptionism.

Survivalists: The human soul and human person survive death in the "interim" state between our bodily death and bodily resurrection at the end of time. There is a lot of nuance here that cannot be described in this forum.

Corruptionist: The human soul, but NOT the human person survive death in the "interim" state between our bodily death and bodily resurrection at the end of time. There is also a lot of nuance here that cannot be described in this forum.

A "Hermeneutic" is a branch of knowledge that deals with interpretation of texts, events, etc. We review the solution to this problem, as proposed by Pope Benedict XVI: which is a "Hermeneutic of Continuity." Is there a "New Church" after Vatican II? Listen to find out!

This episode offers an argument for a Realist metaphysics -- as opposed to a metaphysics of Nominalism. We examine William of Ockham's Nominalism, as opposed to Realism, and why I see Realism as a more sound metaphysical option. We also look at examples such as our senses, quantum physics, etc. and how these offer evidence for Realism.

This episode continues talking about the Historical Critical Method of Biblical Criticism, but with a focus on one of its sources: Modernism -- the first fruit of secular culture. In this episode we discuss many of the roots of Modernism, and also discuss its effects: Slavery, Racism, Eugenics, Ageism, Abortion, Physician-Assisted Suicide, etc.

After this, we turn to talking about how Modernism is seen in the present-day Catholic Church, how much of the Church in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's (especially the clergy) turned a blind-eye to homosexuality and sexual immorality among their ranks and among the laity. We discuss the delusional aura of "do what you feel," and (today) "how you feel is what you are." We also discuss how acceptance of these philosophical stances towards sexuality in general has lead to homosexuality, polyamory, and transgenderism.

We looks specifically at the issues between Calvinism and Arminianism; as well as other Protestant theologies and how they relate to Catholic theology on this issue.

This episode I give my reflections on a talk I heard by Dr. Brant Pitre called, "The Jewish Roots of Holy Week." This talk gave many insights about how Catholic's should view Holy Week from a biblical perspective, but in this episode I hone in on one aspect (giving my reflections on Pitre's talk): The Trees of Life and Death. Enjoy!
