This episode features Santa Maria de Itziar. Our Lady is one of the Seven Black Virgins of Gipuzkoa, located next to the coastal path of the route to Santiago de Compostela. She is considered as a protective virgin and guide for walkers, as she is on the Camino de la Costa on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Santa Maria is another example of the consequences of restoration, but has a history of gilt silver and then updated to her current presentation.

For this episode, we will explore The Virgin of Juncal. This Black Madonna who has since been "restored" is the oldest Marian image in Gipuzkoa and probably in the entire Basque Country. Her shrine is in Irun, and aptly called The Church of Our Lady of Juncal or Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Juncal. The church owes its name to the discovery of a carved image of the Virgin in the reeds growing along the banks of the estuary in around the year 1400.

Here we are, the sixth week of Lent, more commonly known as Holy Week. The final Sunday of Lent is considered Palm Sunday, an echo of that triumphant entry of Christ Jesus into Jerusalem as he began the most significant week of his earthly mission. The Mother of God of the Bull, or as she is known to her Catalonian community of Olot : Mare de Dèu del Tura, will be our exploration for this time. Our Lady of Olot is of note for this last stretch of the Lenten journey, particularly due to one of the folk customs regarding her and the small children who are brought to her as they begin to walk.

We are entering what some would call the home stretch of the forty day journey towards Easter. For this fifth week of Lent, we will be exploring the vast history of Our Lady of Peńa de Francia in Catalonia. Not only does our Lady of Peña de Francia involve various histories due to the fact that her origins involve the geographical fluid region between France and Spain, she also incorporates much of the uniqueness of Spain in its multi ethnic and cultural heritage. To top off her symbolism, The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Peña de Francia, where the Spanish image is currently housed, is a place of pilgrimage.

Cabeza is also the name of the mountain where she was discovered Our Lady of Cabeza is a Marian apparition and statue of the Madonna and Child, whose cult is centered at the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza. The Basilica is located in the Natural Park of the Sierra of Andújar, 32 km north of the city of Andújar, Spain. Her story is a fitting focus for this period of our Lenten Journey.

The Knights Templar are a mysterious order of warrior monks born of the Crusades.
