In the first interview episode of this season, Dustin and Brandon interview Clarence "Tre" Anderson, a two-time graduate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he is currently attending med school. The three discuss various topics related to family, health, and nutrition. They emphasize the importance of prioritizing and organizing one's time to balance various responsibilities.

Having been a 5-year varsity baseball player and now coach along with attending med school, Tre shares his strategies for time management and scheduling. They also discuss mental health and the significance of taking care of oneself. Tre talks about his background in Biochemical Nutrition and dispel several food myths and touch on the importance of exercise and physical fitness.

One of the key takeaways from the conversation is that nutrition doesn't have to be one-size-fits-all. It's important to understand what your body truly needs and find a nutrition approach that works for you and your family, including portion size and balance being key factors in maintaining a healthy relationship with food.

When it comes to exercise, the simplest rule for parents on the go is it can be incorporated into daily activities, such as taking walks while attending your children's practices or using study walks to combine exercise and phone time.

In the final part of the conversation, Tre Armstrong discusses the biggest metabolism killer and the importance of strength training. He emphasizes the value of meal prep for nutrition and the need for balance and fun in fitness.

Clarence “Tre” Armstrong is a two-time graduate of Case Western Reserve University where he got a degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism and a Master’s in Medical Physiology. He is currently a first-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The world of foster care is ever changing and often you'll find it is foster care alumni who are the ones working tirelessly to see that it changes to support the next generation of youth coming through the system. One such person is Jamole Callahan. After spending his teenage years in the foster system with not a whole lot of say as to where he went and what would happen with him, Jamole became an advocate for the rights of the youth growing up in the foster system. He began speaking at large organizations, on Capitol Hill and with smaller non-profits alike and took his advocacy a step further and became a trainer for those looking to become foster parents, using his own experiences to masterfully blend reality with the curriculum of topics presented by state and federal agencies.

In this episode, Jamole returns for his second appearance to give an update on new programs that are coming to help the overwhelmed foster system, how the budget ceiling talks in Washington can affect children and family services, possible bills to throw your support behind and discuss ways that you can support those who are taking on the task of getting involved in the foster system themselves.

"If we love others only when they are deserving, then who would ever be loved?" This powerful quote is one of the beautiful statements that Dad teaches his young daughter, Maeva, in the beautiful children's book by Justin and Alexis Black, I Love You More Than Cereal. After growing up in the foster care system of Detroit, the Blacks have made it their mission to help other foster youth and people in general to overcome generational trauma and turn it into generational success by helping them to "redefine normal" through their speaking engagements, workshops, educational resources and their 12-time award winning, bestselling book titled Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love. As the Blacks started their own family they wanted to help a younger generation and their parents alike to recognize and redefine what love really looks like and develop healthy emotional intelligence. I Love You More Than Cereal is a masterful first byproduct of that new mission.

To kick off Foster Care Awareness Month, Justin makes his second appearance on the podcast and discusses what life is like with the real baby Maeva, how they adjust travelling for appearances with a baby, how their experience as foster alumni might affect the way they parent now, the writing process behind Cereal and the message behind the book. The Blacks are also on tour this summer to promote the book and are open to collaborating with more educational, literary and spiritual organizations to help redefine normal and teach the principles of love.

In this episode of the Family By Heart Podcast host Dustin Gruss speaks with father, family man, rapper and music producer, Reggie DeVore, also known as Blacklight. Together they discuss how Reggie came up with his artist moniker and how it relates to some of the racial injustice he has faced, how that has affected him as a father and husband as well as his experience being on Season 6 of Netflix's Queer Eye.

Social injustice. Generational oppression. Implicit bias. Systemic racism. Despite the fact that he went to war for our country, these were still real issues Reggie DeVore had to face when he came home. Issues that he has to educate his sons about and provide them with the proper tools to overcome them in a respectable and safe manner. But he didn't want to just help his son, he wanted to shed a light on it for society as a whole. And as he started writing poetry and playing with music, he found his voice. A light for others to follow. He found BlackLight.

Being a good husband and a father is a big priority for a lot of men, but often the idea of financially providing for the family overshadows the importance of being there, physically, for the family. Brendan Wall realized this had gotten to be the circumstance for him when the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to be home and make him see with his own eyes everything he was missing with his wife and kids while he had been away at work. This revelation helped him re-prioritize his life and switch jobs to more manageable hours. Not wanting other men to make the same mistake, Brendan took the time being home for the pandemic to start the "Dad the Man" podcast.

At Dad the Man their mission is to "inspire men to be the best version of themselves so that we can show up as the best men, husbands, and fathers for ourselves and our families, and provide the resources to do so.

At Dad the Man we interview the guys we all know and admire professionally, but more importantly, are setting the tone for what a great man, husband, and father looks like. Guys who seize the opportunity before them to love and lead their families from the front, from a place of opportunity not obligation."

In this episode of Family By Heart, Dustin and Brendan talk about the creation of Dad the Man, some of the guests Brendan has had on, similar parenting experiences they've shared and the new journey that they will similarly share as Brendan and his wife prepare to adopt just as Dustin has adopted his two children.

We have broken systems all over this country, one of which is the foster care system. On July 23, 2022, Family By Heart podcast host, Dustin Gruss, filled in at Independence United Methodist Church in Ohio and gave a sermon detailing his experience within the broken foster care system. Despite the fact that Gruss and his wife adopted their two sons from the foster care system, they acknowledge that there are issues in place that make it hard for the biological parents to sometimes get their children back from the foster system. Gruss and his wife trusted in God's plan for their children and for them, but know that there is another side of things and that their is much work to be done in the foster care system and the other broken systems. In this message Gruss encourages other's to seek a relationship with God and find a way God would want to use them to heal these broken systems so God's will would be done.

In this week's episode of Family By Heart, host, Dustin Gruss, speaks with Simon Benn, host of the Thriving Adoptees podcast.

In this episode Benn and Gruss discuss Benn's thriving podcast, some of the guests he has had and topics covered, Benn's idea of society being trauma obsessed versus hope obsessed, what his experience podcasting has taught him and Benn's experience being an adoptee himself.

Benn was adopted at just 5 weeks old and lived what he thought was a fairly normal life in the UK. But when he discovered around his 40th birthday that his long treasured teddy bear was actually a gift from his birth mom, he started to uncover some intense anger, questions and emotional confusion that he hadn't realized he had been carrying all these years, perceiving that he was "unloved". Benn then got into personal development to find happiness and eventually sold his publishing business to help others.

He started working with kids in 2013 - running fun activity workshops with 1600 youngsters to inspire them to be happy, confident and make their dreams come true.

After which he decided to share what he's learned with parents and professionals to make more of a difference through online talking events with the US, UK and Australia as well as being a guest on many podcasts before launching his own, "Thriving Adoptees" which has over 175 episodes in just 2 years time.

Fertility struggles take an emotional and physical toll on any woman looking to have a baby. And it can certainly put a strain on a marriage or relationship when having difficulty trying to conceive. But what about the emotional and mental toll it takes on the husband or male in the relationship? Author Keegan Prue joins host Dustin Gruss in this episode of Family By Heart to talk about the male perspective when it comes to going through fertility struggles.

They discuss Prue's book, "The IVF Dad", being released July 7,2022, share their own fertility issue stories, the stereotypical idea of men not being emotional, what emotional triggers they experienced and how they were able to stand in a space with their partners.

Prue is an educator and author that lives in New York. He and his wife started trying to conceive 5 years ago and after two rounds of IVF, two miscarriages and three embryo tranfers they finally had their miracle baby in 2020. That experience inspired him to write "The IVF Dad: What I Learned on My Infertility Journey, and How it Can Help You." He wanted to help other men and couples going through fertility issues feel more informed, empowered and equipped to support themselves and each other.

At the heart of each family, no matter in what form the family is created, lies the head of the family. It might be the parents, a guardian, a foster parent, an older sibling, etc.. But while taking care of the kids of the family is a HUGE responsibility to the head of the family, so is taking care of themselves. And if the heart and head of the family is a married couple or a team of two people working together, it is important that the team stays connected to each other- not only so that they can best care for the kids but care for their relationship and be an example of what a healthy team or marriage looks like.

In this episode of Family By Heart host/coach, Dustin Gruss, talks about this important fact and then provides examples of how to stay connected to your partner and to yourself.

In this week's episode host, Dustin Gruss, shares a message he gave at a local church's meditative service. In his message he details the journey that he and his wife went through from just their second date, through the rough times during their early discovery of their infertility to where they are now, having just adopted their two boys.

This short message could be considered an abridged version of episodes 2 and 3, "Our Story", but this just from Dustin's perspective and has more of a spirituality focus.

You don't need to be a foster parent to have an impact on the foster community. That's the message that Executive Assistant, Hannah Budic, learned when she joined the Cleveland Angels, a non-profit organization in Northeast Ohio that supports the families and children in the foster community. Listen to Hannah's experience growing up with parents that fostered, her continued passion to help and how she got involved with the Cleveland Angels.

The Cleveland Angels is one of 22 national chapters of the Angels organization. They run two main programs, "Dare to Dream" and "Love Box Families". Dare to Dream is a mentorship program that pairs a screened and qualified adult with an older youth in the foster system and the Love Box Families pairs individuals or groups with a family that is hosting a foster youth and provides them with a monthly box of supplies, gifts and encouragement.

Currently in the Cleveland area there are 27 Love Box families looking to be matched and mentorship needs in Elyria for females and Parma and Euclid for males. For more info or how you can help visit cleangels.org.
