Hello Humans! Welcome to the 67th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

I am so excited to share today’s episode with you. I speak a LOT about physical health optimisation on this podcast, but there is another significant ‘leg of the stool’ in optimising health that cannot be ignored and/or overlooked, and that’s our mindset. And today’s guest is without a doubt, one of the most insightful, wise and knowledgable Humans I know, helping people become the 'drivers of their own cars’, reach their full potential and overcome barriers to change.

Today’s guest is Tracey McBeath. Tracey McBeath lives in Melbourne, Australia. She is a mum of 5, an author of two books, global health and life coach and coach mentor, a Nutrition Network lecturer and mentor, qualified personal trainer, public speaker, and podcaster. After a poor health diagnosis at 40, she transformed her life and health. Now at 50 she is leaner, healthier, and full of energy to keep up with her full and thriving life.

If you are struggling to make the changes you know you need to do to reach your goals, or are feeling stifled in any way, or are a health geek like me and always want to gain insights and knowledge on how we can better optimise our lives, you need to listen to this! And share it with anyone you know who might benefit from listening!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 66th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest has been on my list of dream guests from before I even started this podcast, and he is no other than THE Robert Sikes, a.k.a KetoSavage. I was honoured to have been interviewed on his podcast several years ago (which I will link in the show notes) and finally we were able to schedule a time for us to record an interview for my Podcast.

Robert Orion Sikes is a lifetime natural, competitive bodybuilder. He started training as a junior in high school weighing a whopping 115 pounds. In the beginning, he followed traditional, “bro-dieting” wisdom which consisted of eating 6 or 7 meals a day filled with carbohydrates and very high protein. This nutritional protocol led to a downward spiral of health issues and disordered eating.

After his third bodybuilding competition, Robert decided to try something new and began experimenting with a high fat, strict ketogenic approach to bodybuilding. He formulated his own approach to contest prep nutrition leveraging keto and earned his pro-status with bodybuilding in 2017.

He has since dedicated his life to learning and teaching others the benefits of following a well formulated, ketogenic lifestyle. The lessons learned led to his creation of the Keto Brick, a 1,000 calorie, ketogenic performance meal. The Brick was never meant to be a product sold to the public. Robert just created it for his own personal use during his competition prep. However, after featuring it on a YouTube video, he received a ton of interest around the Brick and decided to jump in with both feet to make it into a viable business. After countless late nights and a never ending grind, the business took off and has since become a wild success!

Robert now works alongside his wife Crystal and their amazing team to continually create content and Bricks and add a ton of value within this community. His mission is, and will continue to be, empowering others to believe in themselves and truly tap into their full potential by optimizing their body and mind.

We dive deep into nitty gritty of Robert’s dietary, electrolyte and hydration and workout strategies, hormonal health, specifically within the bodybuilding space, protein manipulation, Robert’s thoughts on protein supplements and shakes, psychologically dealing with a changing physique, entrepreneurship and so much more. You are going to want to listen until the end. And if you know of anyone who would benefit from hearing this, please share share share.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 64th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest is Sean ‘Sako’ Sakinofsky. On a high level, Sean is the leading pioneer in the field of low carb high fat ultra endurance cycling. He has performed feats that are staggering and defies the current landscape of sport science. Sean continues to do so in order to promote healthier lifestyles via not eating refined foods and sugars. In 2006, Sean founded a supplement company which advocated the usage of carbohydrate. Some years later, he found himself moving away from a high carb, low fat diet, owing to his discovery of being gluten or wheat intolerant. In 2013 after losing his father to Oesophageal cancer, he started to “look out of the box” and saw a correlation between the high carb, low fat diet and lifestyle diseases such as cancer and cardiac problems which plagued both sides of his family. It was then when he adopted a Ketogenic diet and also got out of the carbohydrate supplement business. Since adopting the ketogenic diet 9 years ago, he has proven the efficacy of it, now living in better health and more freedom.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 63rd Show housed in "The Human Theatre".

If you are ready to take your digestion and gut health to the next level, join me on this little ride as I walk you through some of the biggest game-changers that a) have given me the most benefit and b) COST NOTHING! No expensive supplements (although I do not discount their efficacy in some cases, e.g Hydrochloric acid with Pepsin for someone who has low stomach acid), no prescription medications no nothing!

Also, although most of these tips relate to the things we do before, during and post eating a meal, our digestion directly relates to our overall gut health. So for the purposes of this episode, gut health and digestion will be used synonymously. I hope you are ready to take notes!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 62nd Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

I am so excited to be sharing today’s show with you in which we take a deep dive into the complexities of the Mother-daughter relationship (and any relationship really), Drama Therapy and how it works, creativity as a tenant of health, Intergenerational Cycles, the power of the mind-body connection, healing, trauma, Human Connection and so much more.

Our guests today are Ananda Fuchs and Margie Pankhurst.

Ananda is a a certified TRE practitioner and an experienced facilitator of holistic healing and development, education, dance training, and performance art with a passion for community upliftment.
Ananda utilises a trauma-informed and healing-centred approach to the body’s stories with the primary aim of creating a safe space for others both in-person and online, incorporating principles of recovery, discovery, creativity and curiosity.

Margie is an HPCSA registered Arts Therapist (MA in Drama Therapy) who works in both private practice as well as non-profit organisations with children and adults.
She fundamentally believes in the mental health-promoting properties of creativity and has a keen interest in the power of story: the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. Intergenerational cycles are implicit in these stories. The question then becomes: what is the story I tell about myself to the other women who are part of my DNA: my mother, my daughter(s)?
How do we make space to listen and to be heard by these women so that we acknowledge our separateness and our bonds?

More than that, Margie, Ananda and their colleague, Jessica Mayson, are hosting “Mothers & Daughters” - a series of three full-day workshops in the beautiful and serene suburb of Noordhoek in Cape Town, South Africa. The workshops will be held on the 4th, 11th and 18th May 2024. There will be a whole lot of nature, story, creative expression, embodiment, and connection. Spaces are limited, so be sure to secure your spot by clicking on the links provided below!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 60th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today, I bring onto the show a very inspiring Human, and her name is Jayne Bullen.

Jayne believes research in healthcare needs better funding and strong minds. As the Chief Operating Officer of The Noakes Foundation, she established Eat Better South Africa alongside inspiring colleagues and Prof Noakes and believes in building stronger collaboration in the nutrition and science game. After realizing the dichotomy between brand research budgets and human health research, she decided to leave the formal research world, committed to bringing her global experience in big biz research, systems, and policy change expertise into new areas to affect change to human health. Jayne is an MBA Chevening Scholar, High Dip in Marketing and International Relations graduate. In her MBA at Leeds University, she focussed on the regulation of marketing to children in the food and fast food categories, later conducting Pan European media research and strategy evaluation in this area for various global health bodies and brands. As an extension of her collaborative vision for the future of human health and better healthcare systems, she co-founded Nutrition Network and has been its Managing Director since it was founded in 2018.

Today, Jayne and I dive deep into so many topics relating to regaining health; symptoms being our greatest teachers, the metabolism and its role in most chronic conditions, the power of nutrition in helping regain health, specifically metabolic health, PCOS, Insulin Resistance, Weight management, the power of having a coach, root-cause healing, Nutrition Network and their new Cancer module, and soo much more! I am so excited to share it with you…

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 57th Show housed in “The Human Theatre” - the last show for 2023!

In celebration of the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, and the podcast, I decided to do a little Q&A. I’ve received many, many questions over the years, especially since the launch of “The Human Theatre”, and I thought it would be nice and cosy to answer them. Hello Humans! Welcome to the 56th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Our skin is our largest organ, so of course whatever we put on our skin contributes to our current state of health! I am just as much conscious about what I put on my skin (which is not very much) as I am about what I ingest and I am SO excited to bring onto the show Warren Wilensky, who is doing important work in providing us with clean, dermatologically-approved AND environmentally sustainable skincare products that we can use without any worry about absorbing any endocrine-disrupting chemicals and micro-plastics!

With a background in film, television and performing arts, Warren Wilensky has produced some ground-breaking theatre and television in recent years.

Partnering with Generations producer Mfundi Vundla, he produced Winnie The Opera based on his original story and libretto. He went on to produce an international awards show on behalf of Bloomberg Philanthropies, headed by Michael Bloomberg (2019 US Democratic Presidential candidate). He has produced Indoni Cultural SA; a live event that focuses on youth regeneration and a direct response to social ills faced by young people in SA and aires on SABC1.

In 2019, he partnered with Zolani Mahola (former lead singer of Freshly Ground) to produce her autobiographical stage debut, The One Who Sings . Covid put an end to their international tour but Warren focused his attention on his young start up Zero BS.

Always a keen chef, Warren’s creativity took a new turn when he turned his attention to solving his daughter’s skin problems, after which he partnered up with lifelong friend, Yael, to create ZERO BS, that is now available online as well as in pharmacies, Wellness Warehouse, health shops across the country and now exporting to UK.

Today, Warren and I go deep into the backstory behind Zero BS, why they use Beef Tallow as the base for their products, the therapeutic and healing benefits of Tallow, some incredible and dare I say “miraculous” anecdotes of using beef tallow on the skin and so much more! If you want to look after your skin in a way that is also actually healthy (i.e no endocrine-disrupting chemicals and species-appropriate to us as a Human species) and environmentally-sustainable, you’re going to want to listen to this episode!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 55th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Eating Disorders, Recovery, Food Addiction, Addiction…these are complex terms that evoke complex conversations, and rightly so! And if you have ever experienced or know of anyone who has experienced any of these phenomena, you NEED to listen to this episode!

I have been in the Eating Disorder and Addiction Recovery space online for a while, and I am the first to tell you that it’s ambiguous, messy, empowering and as you will learn today, often lacks nuance…and that can be very harmful! And this is why I am so excited for you to hear what Dr David Wiss has to say, and learn about the very important work that he is doing.

Dr. David Wiss grew up in Los Angeles where he received his Bachelor’s in Social Science from the University of Southern California (USC). Having developed an interest in nutrition, David enrolled at California State University, Northridge where he earned a Master of Science in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science. This led to a dietetic internship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center where he received specialized training in their eating disorders unit. This experience sparked a deep interest in the role of nutrition as part of mental health recovery.
David became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in 2013 and founded Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs specializing in the treatment of eating and substance use disorders. During this time, David developed a specialized nutrition curriculum that has been incorporated at more than fifty addiction treatment centers in Southern California and worldwide.

In 2017, David received the “Excellence in Practice” award at the national Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo.In 2017, David matriculated at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health in the Community Health Sciences department, with a minor in Health Psychology. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in 2022 by investigating the links between adverse childhood experiences and various mental health outcomes among socially disadvantaged men. During his doctoral training, Dr. Wiss published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the fields of food addiction, eating disorders, substance use disorders, depression, trauma, and childhood sexual abuse. These papers have been published in high-impact journals such as Appetite, the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Frontiers in Psychiatry, Public Health Nutrition, Nutrients, Eating and Weight Disorders, and others. In addition, he has contributed multiple book chapters on topics such as binge eating and dietary restraint.

Dr. Wiss has received additional training from the Institute of Functional Medicine (AFMCP) and Psychiatry Redefined

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 51st Show housed in "The Human Theatre".

Today, I am honoured to have Christian Van Camp come on the show and speak about all things Men’s Health - something I don’t think could ever be emphasised enough. A large part of the health and wellness space is predominantly female-based, however, Men’s health is equally as essential to give voice to and speak out about.

Christian Van Camp is a Men’s Holistic Lifestyle and Performance Coach on a mission to energize and empower men to live a more healthy, adventurous, and balanced life. Since childhood he overcame many challenges with his family’s health, trauma, and addiction all of which inspired him to study the vast array of ancestral wisdom and modern science the past 7+ years. Most days you’ll catch Christian barefoot hiking in nature, working out, jumping in ice baths, cooking delicious meals, and playing with his two cats, Akira and Nika.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 50th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”. We are halfway to 100!!!! I cannot believe it!

According to Dr David Rabin, M.D PhD, who is a neuroscientist, board certified Psychiatrist, health tech entrepreneur and inventor, the average person today consumes more information in the first 30 minutes of waking than the average person did in 1 WEEK in the 1950s. You heard me. When I heard this I knew I needed to write an episode for the Pod, because I don’t know about you, but I find myself completely disconnected and silently overwhelmed when I get “stuck” into all the scrolling, and in general, stuck consuming way too much content.

And as ironic as it may seem, while I’ve been navigating my way through this low period, I came across Dr David Rabin’s work (ironic because yeah, I stumbled my way to his work while consuming content), but it truly resonated so deeply with me to the point where I needed to share it. So, today’s episode is inspired by a large proportion of Dr David Rabin’s work. In fact, I highly suggest you check out some of his work.

In today’s solo-cast, I’ll not only discuss the climate of the current information overload and overstimulation crisis that faces most of the modern world, I’ll also be sharing my personal experiences with feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated and burnout when trying to “keep up”, and finally, share with you 6 highly effective and actionable interventions that you can use to help you slow down, reconnect, process information and overstimulation, as espoused by Dr David Rabin (which, shameless plus, align perfectly with my own work!).

I hope you enjoy the show!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 49th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today I am excited to bring on to the show, Derek Burchell-Burger. Derek is the GM of an award winning NZ Manuka Honey brand, a Capetonian by birth but from a young age spent most of his life living overseas & has finally returned home. He is a strong advocate for ancestral modes of healing and Cape Town’s all encompassing outdoors lifestyle.

Derek and I discuss all things digital nomadism, honey, specifically Manuka Honey, health, bio-hacking and wellness as it pertains to the potential that Cape Town, as a city and top-tier destination, has to offer. Derek and I both get a little vulnerable at time as we reflect on our own health and personal development journeys I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did recording it.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 48th Show housed in “The Hunan Theatre”.

Today, I had the honour and privilege of interviewing one of my biggest inspirations in my recovery journey. Although this person never had an eating disorder, I found a significant amount of hope in her transformation to health through diet and other lifestyle interventions.

Rebekah Farmer is a health & life coach with a keen eye for maximising the nutritional value in any way of eating. Since she was young, she has had a passion for health, nature, fitness, and holistic nutrition/food as medicine. She has overcome Chronic Lyme Disease, Chronic C-Diff, over 10 autoimmune diseases along with Osteoporosis, Costochondritis, and Degenerative Disc (which she was diagnosed with in 6th and 7th grade), OCD, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Narcolepsy, and a myriad of digestive issues such as Gastroparesis, IBS, IBD, Slow Transit Colon, Celiac and Diverticulitis. She overcame all of it in the span of only a few years and found food freedom through proper bio individual nutrition and Faith. She has since directed her practice toward walking alongside others who are on their own healing journeys.

Today, we dive deep into antidepressants, antibiotics and their impact on the gut, hormones, fertility, bio-individuality, getting stuck in negative belief systems, the importance of having a friend and so much more. Rebekah also dives deep into her health journey, during which, at one point, she was admitted into an eating disorder facility; she was so malnourished due to her digestive issues that she had been mistaken as having an eating disorder. Rebekah and I get vulnerable about our respective experiences being in an eating disorder unit.

If you are in the depths of chronic illness, or are in the depths of receiving even just one medical diagnosis, know that you are not alone and that there is 100% hope. Rebekah is living proof of the body’s innate ability to repair itself, when put it in the right environment to heal.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 46th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

We know that sleep is foundational when it comes to anything related to your body, and I know I am not alone in experiencing periods where the quality of my sleep is sub-optimal. There is a MAJOR difference between quantity and quality of sleep. The quality of your sleep is pivotal, because sure, you may be in bed for 8-9 hours and you may have been totally asleep for those 8-9 hours, but if you didn’t get adequate REM and Deep sleep, then you could still wake up feeling as if you haven’t slept.

I have spoken a lot about the importance of adequate sleep on the podcast, but in short, not getting enough adequate sleep puts you at risk of many diseases and disorders that range from diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity and dementia, to name a few. Fundamental biological processes happen when we are asleep, such as; the brain gets rid of toxic waste as well as stores and processes information, the body begins to restore important cells, releases important molecules like hormones and proteins in the name of cell rejuvenation and the nerve cells begin to re-group, re-organize and communicate, which further helps the functioning of the brain. And a happy brain equals a happy mood, body and spirit.

However, life happens! And sometimes, our nights are interrupted, or we go to sleep later than we would like, or the quality of our sleep is depressed due to things like stress, exposure to blue light after dark, eating a big meal too close to bed etc. And one of my biggest hacks to combat a poor night of sleep is a juicy NSDR session. Insert today’s episode.

NSDR stands for Non-sleep Deep rest, and it has been scientifically proven to combat some of the detrimental effects of a poor night’s sleep. NSDR has been popularised by Dr Andrew Huberman (one of my favourite people), and is essentially synonymous to deep relaxation or Yoga Nidra. And today, I will be guiding you through a quick NSDR session - so please utilise this whenever you feel like you’re fatigued, exhausted or overwhelmed, and especially if you have had a poor night of sleep. It can be done at any time of the day, and can even be done in the middle of the night if you are struggling to fall asleep or find yourself waking up unable to fall back asleep. It can be done seated or lying down. Share this with anyone and everyone, because we all deserve to have fully functioning, fully restored and rejuvenated cells!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 44th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest is doing AMAZING work in educating and coaching people to optimal health through ketogenesis, intermittent fasting and an array of nutritional interventions that help bring the body back to health.

Kim Forbes is a functional nutrition coach from Johannesburg South Africa. She specialises in keto and intermittent fasting. A ketogenic Carnivore diet (so, a zero carb, high protein and high fat diet) is what got me through severe anorexia. And so, I am so excited to bring on our guest today, Kim Forbes, to dive deep into all things ketogenesis, food addiction, common pitfalls on the ketogenic diet and so much more!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 43rd Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

One of the most wonderful phenomenons in life is meeting and connecting with someone. Today’s guest exemplifies this phenomenon, and I cannot wait to share our conversation with you.

Today, we welcome an extraordinary, multi-talented Human to the show to discuss an array of topics ranging from Bio-hacking, Art, Poetry, Shamanism, Scuba Diving and the Kabbalah. Although this conversation covers so many diverse and seemingly unrelated topics, I promise you, there is something to be learnt, and something to be taken away.

Our guest today is David Flusberg. David Flusberg (“Flus”) is an American artist, writer, and poet from Boston and Manhattan, currently based in Romania. He is a self-taught painter, and began to make art in 2001, when he was twenty-five, after a shamanic encounter in the jungle of Laos.

Flus’s art forms a canon of semi-autobiographical, but always mythological storytelling—inspired by a smorgasbord of impressions drawn from nature and travel, ancient and tribal art, Kabbalah, yoga, and shamanism, and entheogenic places, spaces, and states. Ever-present are the spirits of Flus’s family and ancestors; the energies of animal and vegetable spirits; and visions that spring from the non-ordinary state of in vivo/vitro consciousness that Flus experiences when under water, cocooned in the womb of Mother Earth, swaddled by psychedelic colors, creatures, and sounds.

Flus graduated from Harvard College with a BA in Economics and a focus on sociology and anthropology; spent several years as a corporate advisor at a top-tier consulting firm; and then moved to Romania, where he developed close to 2,000 apartments. Flus is fluent in Hebrew and Romanian. He is a certified scuba instructor and teaches diving courses to his children and other very important people. When he isn’t under water, Flus can be spotted making day trips to ancient castles in the Transylvanian Alps, or night trips to his studio in Bucharest.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 41st Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

You have heard me speak about the pillars of health many times. These include things like sleep, nutrition, movement, having a purpose, community, creativity, mindset etc. Having pillars or tenants of health help us view life through a holistic lens, because, well, there are so many factors at play all the time when it comes to anything relating to our physical and emotional health, and today’s guest is someone doing AMAZING work by practicing therapy through a holistic lens.

Nuraan Felix is a trauma-focused psychotherapist and has extensive experience working with early childhood trauma, addiction and PTSD. She completed her Psychology degree at the University of Cape Town,South Africa and has Post Graduate certification in EMDR, CBT and Integrative Psychology.

Nuraan follows an holistic approach to recovery and is a RYT 200hr Certified Yoga Teacher and Meditation Instructor. Working as a psychotherapist she started noticing patterns and could see clearly that the most effective tools for helping clients was an integrated approach. Trying to heal only from the level of the mind simply didn’t work. This motivated her to focus on a therapeutic approach that combines the strengths of western psychotherapy with alternative healing tools. This is how Somatic Therapy.Co was born.

For the past few years Nuraan has been based in Asia. She’s worked at various treatment centres including The Cabin and The Dawn. Nuraan is part of the Daughters Rising team, a women’s empowerment anti sex-trafficking organisation. These days she commits most of her free time to organising online trainings and healing retreats.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 40th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”. In this episode, I want to elaborate on a few revelations and tips that have helped me begin the process of feeling comfortable in my own body. Eating Disorders are often compared to an Addiction, however, the complexity of Eating Disorders lies in the fact that for an alcoholic, you can throw away the alcohol and for a drug addict, you can throw away the drugs, however, for an Eating Disorder, you cannot just throw away the body! In order to survive, WE NEED TO EAT! And in order to THRIVE, WE NEED TO NOURISH OURSELVES adequately. Points discussed:

  • We need energy to live.
  • Health over aesthetics.
  • Health comes in different shapes and sizes; tips to navigate your way through Social Media.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 39th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

The more I dive into the research, the more it is evident that the quality of the food (and anything you consume) is vital, as it is the quality (or lack there of) that determines a favourable, low-inflammatory hormonal response or an unfavourable, inflammatory response in your body. Yeah, calories are a thing, however, I would argue that the quality of your calories are more important.

In this regard, it makes knowing how Food Systems work, and knowing where the food you eat comes from. Insert today’s guest, Farmer Angus.

Angus McIntosh is Farmer Angus. He grew up on a cattle ranch in Kwa-Zulu Natal and studied Management Accounting at Stellenbosch University before stockbroking for Goldman Sachs in London for just over four years. After declining an offer of promotion, he left his job and moved to South Africa where he built a clay home with inspiration from various people on the way leading to him to eventually becoming a biodynamic student, grass farmer and carbon sequestrator.

“After reading about Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms in Virginia, USA, in Michael Pollans’ “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” Angus decided to become a farmer. Under the mentorship of Christo Kok, he started farming on Spier, outside Stellenbosch, South Africa, in December 2008.

Farmer Angus is one of two grass fed, pasture-reared beef producers in the Western Cape. Biodynamic and regenerative agricultural principles and practices are applied in the raising of the farm’s animals which includes cattle, pigs and laying hens, as well as vegetables and wine. Situated on 126 hectares of irrigated pasture at Spier Wine Estate near Stellenbosch, their charcuterie, made by Gastro Foods, is the only charcuterie in South Africa cured without added nitrates or nitrites.

All Farmer Angus products are also 100% growth-hormone free, routine antibiotic free and the pig and chicken food is glyphosate free. The vineyards on the farm are in their 8th year of being certified organic.

Farmer Angus achieved a world first in 2013 where he became the first person globally to sell Carbon credits for increasing the Carbon contents of the pastures where the cattle graze.

Today, we only got to touch the surface of Regenerative Agriculture, and why we should care about it! And unfortunately, there were some time constraints. So we are definitely going to have to have a Part 2. But regardless, the value that Farmer Angus shared, and the value he is contributing to South Africa and the world is tremendous. And I am so grateful for his time.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 38th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

This episode is a very special one in which my mother recounts and shares her revelations-in-hindsight that she would have wanted to know during the time I was my most sick. This episode is made even more serene by virtue that it was recorded whilst my mom and I were walking on one of our favourite trails - so you will hear some dogs barking, footsteps, background chatter and waterfalls…but I kind of like the organic unfolding of being out-and-about in nature with my mom.

My mom often refers to the motherly instinct to love, protect and feed her children, and today, I just want to dedicate this episode to my mom, and all the moms and carers out there, particularly those who have someone who may be struggling, or even struggling themselves. There is no manual for being a parent, heck, there’s no manual for being a Human! And as my mom so rightly says in the end: “we are all just doing the best that we can with what we have”.

My mom and I hope that this episode helps just one person - and if you know of anyone who might benefit from hearing this, please share share share!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 37th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

This episode is for anyone who has ever struggled with gut issues, autoimmunity, or anyone who is health conscious (or considering becoming more health conscious). And you are all in for a treat!

Today’s guest is the beautiful Gigi Ashworth - a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants foodie, showing you how to make quick and easy salmon-based recipes with a dash of crass and a side of sarcasm.

“Gigi (Genevieve) Ashworth is a former competitive snowboarder and horseback rider that has since become a popular allergen-friendly food personality, keto chef, health & wellness advisor across all social media platforms, with a master’s certificate in Nutrition Communications from Tufts University.

GiGi cannot eat wheat, grains, dairy, gluten, sugar, nuts, or fruit. She also has Celiac and Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS-C, and doesn’t have a large intestine. That being said, she doesn’t see her complications as a death sentence. She turned my limitations into knowledge, and now helps others.

People seek tons of advice from her platform (such as traveling with food intolerances and/or autoimmune diseases) along with allergen-friendly / keto diet approved recipes that everyone can enjoy. . She is described as having an infectious, no bullshit, hilarious, salmon-loving personality”.

It was incredible to have Gigi come on the show. And what I love most is that Gigi personifies that education and spreading information can be combined rather beautifully with entertainment!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 36th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today you are in for an absolute treat; our guest is the beautiful Yvette Zihhalirwa. Yvette is an experienced early childhood development specialist, and has over ten years of experience working in the NGO sector, both locally and internationally. She is a mom, certified Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) life coach, has a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from UNICAF University and has received certified training from the Nutrition Network in LCHF/Ketogenic Nutrition and Treatment.

By leveraging her background in education and advocacy work, as well as harnessing her passion for community development, she has been fortunate enough to positively impact communities across the country and very excited to be leading a programme like Eat Better South Africa, which positively contributes to the future outlook of the continent’s health through nutrition.

Yvette and I share a LOT of the same passions, and if there were no time limitations, we could have geeked out for hours. I had met Yvette after I completed my Nutrition Advisory training from Nutrition Network, and happened to cross paths again when we both arrived to the first workshop for TEDxCapeTown, in which we were both speakers for their recent event.

If you want to eat healthily on a budget, have children, pregnant, or planning to have children, and if you care about your health in general, this episode is just for you! And if you know of anyone who may be interested in these topics, please share the link to this episode with them!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 35th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s show is a very meaningful one, in which I welcome my dad, Gavin Buchalter, back onto the Podcast to share SOME (emphasis on SOME - because post-recording we realised how much more there was to say!), of his revelations that he has learnt throughout the years of my life, that he wishes he had known. It’s totally a case of “If I knew then, what I know now”.

We really wanted to shed some hope in that whatever you or a loved one are going through, relief and serenity is possible. We also really wanted to remind you that no one was born to suffer.

Today, my dad and I elaborate on some of my dad’s biggest revelations that he wishes he knew earlier to prevent the severity of repercussions of anorexia, bulimia and anxiety experienced by myself, but also my family. The main points we discuss are; the difference between an abstainer vs a moderator, understanding the root cause of eating disorders, how to communicate with someone with an eating disorder and the importance of understanding metabolic and hormonal functioning in the human body. I hope you enjoy the geeky deep dive as much as we did recording it.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 34th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s episode is pretty special! Behind the scenes, I’ve been in a deep and comprehensive preparation for presenting on the TEDxCapeTown and TEDxYouthCapeTown’s red carpet, at their upcoming main event happening on the 28th January 2023 (if you are listening to this episode when it airs, that’s literally in three days!).

It has been a dream come true for me, and I am still in disbelief that it’s even happening.

Today, I had the privilege of having two remarkably talented, driven, passionate and inspiring power women come on the show to tell us about all things TEDxCapeTown.

Ronell Swartbooi is an extremely passionate communicator and networker, always seeking to connect with like-minded individuals across industries. Her core goal is to deepen her understanding of innovative technologies that advance the growth of people, brands, and businesses across the globe - from consumer to enterprise.

Her fave quote - "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn." - Alvin Toffler

Volunteering is a fundamental part of Ronell's DNA. She's been a volunteer in the TEDx community in South Africa since 2013 and was selected as the first female Curator of TEDxCapeTown in 2021. This is her sandbox, where she gets the opportunity to help build a strong brand like TEDx with a powerfully talented team of professionals. Ronell has been instrumental in building the brand team at TEDxCapeTown since 2015.

Alexandra Kotchoubei is the Marketing Executive at Topco Media who obtained her Bachelor and Honours in BCom Strategic Brand Management from Vega School, which sparked her joy for all things brand and marketing. She is also on the current 2022/2023 Loeries Youth Committee and has been on the TEDxCapeTown volunteer team since 2018 working from social media to event curation. Seeing the process of an idea getting to the final stage and then on YouTube is what she sees as magic come to life.

The fact that she is a part of something so much bigger is what excites her in everything that she does. It allows her to learn new things about different industries, new things about herself and meet and connect with new and different people. In the world of marketing working with elements of international, collaboration and a youth focus is what she looks for in everything that she does.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 32nd show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Happy Happy New Year! May it be a year in greater health, consciousness, authenticity and inner-peace - you deserve it all! I have NO idea what the future holds, but I know it’s going to be exciting…and I am so honoured to be right here here, with you! We have some very exciting guests coming on the show, and I cannot wait to share them with you.

We are starting the new year with a BANG! Today’s guest has appeared on the show already (episode 11 to be exact), and his name is Ryan Mitchel Brown.

9 years ago, Ryan suffered from Anorexia and Orthorexia. He went through the “standard of care”, or as he calls it: weight restoration, but developed binge-eating disorder. However, because he was at a “normal” weight (according to BMI…which, you know how I feel about BMI as a metric), his eating disorder was ignored.

Ryan continued his eating disordered behaviours until his body went into shutdown mode, after which he developed an autoimmune disease; Small Fibre Neuropathy.

In a desperate attempt to reclaim his health, Ryan researched his way into Functional Medicine and healing through a whole food, animal based diet.

As he began to heal himself, he became impassioned to become a recovery coach for others, helping them overcome their mental and physical health obstacles.

Ryan and I informally debate the topic: Is choosing to eat healthily an Eating Disorder? Or, another way of putting it: “Is being health conscious an Eating Disorder?

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 31st Show - the final Show of 2022 - housed in “The Human Theatre”.

The end of the year is usually a time of deep reflection and goal setting. A time of evaluating things that have worked, and things that may need tweaking. A time of letting go and moving forward. My hope is that after this episode, you will have some more food for thought to carry with you.

As 2022 comes to a close, I thought I’d do a summary of the first 30 episodes of “The Human Theatre”; drawing on the gist of each episode in hopes to leave you with a reiteration of information worth knowing and inspiration moving forward into a new year. As you have heard me say many, many times, NO Human was born to suffer, and living a life in optimal mental and physical health is our birthright…NOT a luxury.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 30th show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Our guest today is Josh Snyman - a self-taught photographer/filmmaker, content creator and fitness enthusiast based in Cape Town. This is actually our third interview together, however, the first interview on “The Human Theatre” Podcast. And also, as you will hear, the first time where the roles are reversed, and instead of Josh being the Interviewer, I am, and he gets a turn to be interviewed. Josh and I share our understanding of the Human body through an ancestral lens; remembering where we came from and how we evolved, and how we can marry what our physiologies require, whilst still remaining realistic in the current modern world.

In today’s episode, Josh goes deep into some amazing topics that have been at the forefront of his mind, and I am so grateful he came on and shared his wisdom and understanding of navigating this thing called “life”. From the concept of being okay in your own skin, finding your “home”, awakening your shaman, the power of the Human body in its ability to heal itself, Josh’s actionable ways of becoming more mindful, Josh’s vulnerable backstory, to meat, movement and mindfulness…I promise you, this one is a goodie - jam-packed with practical information that can make a huge difference in your own health, and ultimately, lives!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 28th Show housed in "The Human Theatre".

Did you know that 'Hydration' does not mean ONLY drinking water? Yes, plain water is necessary to stay Hydrated, but gulping down litres of plain water may backfire by way of creating fluid, electrolyte and mineral imbalances. Water is only one piece of the puzzle. The other pieces are electrolytes.

Today, we dive deep into the world of Hydration, specifically, electrolytes, with Mark Myerson.

Mark Myerson is a South African born entrepreneur, health advocate and founder of electrolyte brand REVIVE.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 26th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest is Christopher Dudgeon. Chris is a South African Musical Theatre Performer, Playwright, Theatre-maker and Theatre-owner. In our final year, we were lucky enough to have Chris come and share his story and how he has navigated his way through the Theatre & Performing Arts Industry in South Africa and abroad. I was completely blown away by his backstory, and knew I needed to have him come on the show.

I was lucky enough to get to record this episode live, in-person with Chris in his gorgeous theatre, 69 Theatre, in the heart of Cape Town. We dive deep into Chris’s journey, the inherent resilience needed in an industry such as the Theatre and Performing Arts industries, how to get though hard times when on tour, show business and so much more. Chris is an intellectual genius, and shares incredible amounts of wisdom.

“We are not born to lose weight”.

Hello Humans, and welcome to the 25th show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s solo-cast is all about the power of reframing, specifically reframing the emotional attachment to the word “gain”. “Gain” is a common word that triggers a lot of people who have ever struggled with an eating disorder or disordered eating. Also, in a world where weight loss is glorified, it’s so important to be able to reframe and reGAIN perspective of what true health really means, because, it can so easily go so wrong. I do want to add that I’m definitely not perfect, and life is hard, really hard, sometimes…and so this content also serves as a personal reminder! I’m speaking to me just as much as I am speaking to you. We all experience the ups and the downs, but how humbling is it to know that you are not alone in this world? You are definitely not alone in this world! I hope today’s show helps you wherever you are on the journey…

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 23rd show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today, I am honoured to share with you one of my biggest influences, who has helped me, indirectly, in navigating my way through anxiety, anorexia, and the medical complications involved with the latter.

Ben Azadi, FDN-P, is one of the world’s leading experts on the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. He is the author of four best-selling books, “Keto Flex”, “The Perfect Health Booklet”, “The Intermittent Fasting Cheat Sheet”, and “The Power of Sleep”. Ben is known as ‘The Health Detective’ because he investigates dysfunction, and he educates, not medicates, to bring the body back to normal function. Ben is the founder of Keto Kamp; a global brand bringing awareness to ancient healing strategies. He is also the host of a top 15 podcast, The Keto Kamp Podcast, which has over 1.5 million downloads. His YouTube channel has over 135 000 subscribers and on TikTok, he has over 220 000 subscribers. I would highly recommend giving him a follow and a listen…you won’t regret it.

Ben and I dive deep into the power of nutrition on one’s current health status, why your symptoms are actually your biggest blessings, how to get your body to use fat and ketones for fuel, the importance of mindset and knowing your “why”, what blood tests Ben recommends and so much more. Ben is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, and it was a real treat having him come on the show!

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 14th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

I was recently asked to give a presentation at a local conference, and for today’s show, I thought I would replicate the presentation I did.

Against the backdrop of our modern world, and all that comes with being alive, it is even more important to be able to be who you are, and live it with conviction. You can be stripped of EVERYTHING in your life; your house, your money, your clothes, your family, but NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE can ever take away your essence, your innate wisdom, your authenticity; who you are. At the end of the day, all you have is yourself; your body your only home. It’s a bittersweet revelation, but truly embodying this truth paves the way to relinquish a LOT of anxiety surrounding things that are outside of who you are, which, essentially, anything outside and external from you is merely ‘noise’.

Hello Humans, and welcome to the 12th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”. Today I got to sit down with an academically, sports and musically-talented individual who, by day, does the things a Software Developer does (I still don’t know exactly what it is he does), and by night, turns into a Rock G-d, and I am lucky enough to call him my Older brother.

Josh Buchalter did his honours in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, graduating with Distinction (of course). He currently works as a Full-time Software Developer, and on the side, is also a passionate guitarist and performer. If you can’t find him at work or on the stage, Josh will probably be on the golf course or playing any other sport.

At the end of our chat, Josh and I thought we’d do a Live recording of one of my original songs called “By Your Side”. So, if you make it to the end, you have a little treat of a live performance with Josh and Myself in our family home. (Alternatively, you can just fast-forward to the end…whatever preference you have! I won’t judge).

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 11th show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest is Ryan Mitchel Brown. Eight years ago, Ryan suffered from Anorexia and Orthorexia. He went through the “standard of care”, or as he calls it in the episode: weight restoration, but developed binge-eating disorder, however, because he was at a “normal” weight (according to BMI…which, you know how I feel about BMI as a metric), his eating disorder was ignored.

Ryan continued his eating disordered behaviours until his body went into shutdown mode, after which he developed an autoimmune disease; Small Fibre Neuropathy.

In a desperate attempt to reclaim his health, Ryan researched his way into Functional Medicine and healing through a whole foods, animal-based diet.

As he began to heal himself, he became impassioned to become a recovery coach for others, helping them overcome their mental and physical health obstacle.

Today we go deep into Ryan’s story, Eating Disorders and mental health, Eating Disorders and Mental Health recovery, health through an ancestral lens, the pillars of health, and our thoughts and experiences in triumphing over some of our hardest times. All in the name of normalising the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of being a Human in this world.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the 10th Show housed in “The Human Theatre”.

Today’s guest is milliner extraordinaire, Crystal Birch. She is a leading lady in the sartorial landscape of South Africa - and when it comes to hats or anything adorning the head, she is the go-to for the countries’ most creative characters. Crystal turned her degree from the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion on its head (excuse the pun) by preserving the art of millinery; while simultaneously re-introducing us to the inherent power that only the hat can hold for completing a look.

Crystal embodies creativity, and I am SO here for it!

Hello Humans! Welcome back to the fourth show housed in “The Human Theatre”: Part 2 of “What my Anorexia Needed to Know”.

The main points discussed in this episode:

  1. What other people think of you is none of your business.
  2. Being selfish (with pure intent for your own sanity) is NOT a bad thing, and setting healthy boundaries are pivotal in living your most fulfilling life.
  3. Let food be thy medicine.
  4. When actively starving oneself, one has two options; a) continue to live a life in misery with all the physiological and psychological side effects or worse, death or b) choose life (and make damn sure it’s the best one yet!)
  5. The scale cannot decipher between bone mass, muscle mass, organ mass etc.

Hello Humans! Welcome to the third show housed in “The Human Theatre”: Part 1 of “What My Anorexia Needed to Know”.

The major points discussed in this episode are:

  1. The detrimental side effects of being too underweight: higher mortality, cardiac arrest, osteoporosis, osteopenia, loss of libido, hair loss, amenorrhea (loss of your menstrual cycle), insomnia, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, infertility and gut permeability, just to name a few)
  2. Being healthy IS COOL!
  3. The brain is made up of 60% fat, therefore, restricting healthy fat sources in fear of calories was detrimental to my health; psychologically and physically!
  4. The body is an OPEN system, so applying the notion that it’s all about calories in and calories out is too simplistic of a notion to apply to the exquisite complexity of our Human bodies.
  5. You can take accountability how you respond and react in the world through your breath alone! You can utilize your breath, through various breathing techniques, to put you in a parasympathetic (rest & digest) to sympathetic (fight, flight) state, depending on your respective requirements.
  6. Educating oneself about how the body works and what the body is made up of is PROFOUND in de-mystifying mental health.
  7. You cannot address your software (Psychology) if your hardware (Physiology) is not functioning optimally.
  8. How you live your life day-to-day directly impacts your state of health and state of being. Genetics load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger.
  9. And finally; health is not a passive state. Becoming empowered in knowledge and self-awareness is a HUGE part of the puzzle that too many people overlook!
