The Dance of Growth: Recent Episodes

Chelsea Christensen

What is growth and why does it matter? Early on, I learned the importance of growth and the role it plays in a life of fulfillment.

The show is called The Dance of Growth, because growth really is like a dance! Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's slow, and sometimes the most impactful moments are found, in no movement at all.

Each week I'm bringing you into conversations where you will hear experiences of many different seasons of growth. For some it came from the struggle, some experienced a positive kind of growth, and many had unexpected growth, but all of it ended up being for the greater good.

My goal is that this podcast gives you an opportunity to reflect, acknowledge, celebrate, and embrace all the seasons of growth in your life

Trigger Warning * in this podcast we discuss mental health, depression and suicide.

Welcome to this episode with our incredible guest, Erin Hall. She is a true inspiration when it comes to holistic health, wellness, and vulnerability. Erin has so much wisdom to share, and I know you're going to love hearing her story.

One of the things Erin and I discuss is our Enneagram types and the challenges we face as perfectionists and people pleasers. It's a topic that so many of us can relate to, and it's incredibly empowering to hear Erin's perspective on it.

Erin also opens up about her own struggles with mental health and the importance of finding a safe space to share our stories. It's a reminder that we are not alone in our struggles, and that there is strength in vulnerability.

We also touch on the significance of self-reflection and self-worth. Erin shares some incredible insights on finding joy in life and embracing the journey of self-discovery.

I want to leave you with some words of encouragement from Erin herself. No matter where you are on your own journey of growth and self-discovery, remember that you are not alone. Embrace vulnerability, seek out safe spaces to share your story, and always remember your worth. You are capable of incredible things, and I believe in you.

Today I get to have a conversation with Emma Ferrick about her inspiring journey from surviving to thriving after overcoming abusive relationships and personal struggles. In this conversation we cover a lot but some key points we touch on are:

  • The power of finding self-worth beyond your roles and external validations, and the gradual process of shifting mindset and beliefs.
  • The transformative power of writing down goals and visions. While it might seem simple, putting your goals on paper makes them tangible and actionable.
  • Practical advice for those facing challenges, including seeking support, taking small steps towards growth, and embracing the journey of self-discovery and self-love.
  • The significance of surrounding yourself with the right people, as our mindset and behaviors often mirror those around us. The idea that "you are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with" can greatly impact personal growth and development.

I hope you loved this conversation as much as I did! Before you go here are some helpful links from today:

Todays episode gets you thinking about where you might be being held hostage in your life. Are you in a situation that isn't really what you want, but you just keep going along? Are you actually in the drivers seat of your life?

My guest, Jasmine Ivy had the wake up call of her life when she found herself quite literally not in the drivers seat. She was in the backseat of a car and realized it wasn't her rideshare and she was in fact being kidnapped.

We talk about that very real experience and how she radically changed her life after surviving, and how she now coaches other women to listen to their intuition, follow their hearts, and make a huge impact in their lives.

"Take me where I'm supposed to go today, to make a difference in someone's life."

Billy Flanagan has worked for Disney for over 40 years as an incredible performer. But he earned the title Happiest Man Alive during the Covid shutdown, a time when many of us were probably not at our happiest.

Being away from performing while things were shut down, Billy began biking as a way to stay fit and turned his rides into a way to bring smiles to the people he knew. By visiting them with a singing telegram, or Flanigram.

Tune into our conversation today where we talk about how our small acts can seem like not a big deal to us, but can make a big difference for others and how we really can change the world and (for others and ourselves) and make it a better place one small act at a time.

Get ready because this episode is going to blow your mind! I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Melissa Esmeralda, a former paralegal turned conversion copywriter for coaches and course creators.

Melissa is a total rockstar when it comes to copywriting. It's all about writing in a way that really speaks to your audience and shows them the transformation that you can provide. And let me tell you, Melissa has some amazing insights on this topic!

But it's not just about business and copywriting. Melissa shares a personal story about a friend who helped her realize that she was living her life like a passenger, lacking control and self-esteem. And let me tell you, it's a powerful story that really hits home. We talk about the importance of recognizing and making changes to patterns that no longer serve us, and the value of having friends who are willing to speak the truth and invite us into our own power.

And let's not forget about the struggle of trusting our instincts and distinguishing between intuition and fear. Melissa shares her experience of being skeptical of everyone and how she had to learn to navigate through those feelings. It's a topic that we can all relate to, and Melissa has some amazing insights on how to overcome those fears and trust our instincts.

But it's not all serious stuff! Melissa also talks about her experience transitioning from being a paralegal to becoming a full-time copywriter. She shares her challenges and triumphs along the way, and how she learned to prioritize her own desires and needs when it comes to taking on projects.

Overall, this episode is packed with valuable insights and advice on effective copywriting, personal growth, and business ownership. So get ready to take some notes and get inspired!

One thing I really loved from this episode is the idea of stepping into a scientist state of mind. So often when we go to start something new, we play out all the things that could go wrong and sometimes freeze up there and keep ourselves stuck! Or if we do fail, we wallow in that failure instead of using it as data.

Becoming the scientist, as my guest Juliana says, helps you shift your perspective, step into action, use mistakes and your wins as data, and continue to move forward on your goals.

This episode is a goodie and will definitely help shift your mindset to get you taking action on your goals today.

It's that time again where I show up solo, without a guest and share with you some thoughts that have been on my mind. This month I have been thinking about the idea of humility and just some of the ways that I've seen it show up lately in the world around me. I gotta be honest, I think we might be doing humility wrong!

Being humble is a great quaility when it's done correctly. But too often I see people especially our teens and younger people using humility as a crutch to hide their talents, to not show up fully in their gifts, and to downplay themselves.

Tune in today to hear my thoughts on humililty and how we can be humble in a way that benefits us and those around us.

Last week I was able to give a keynote address to the women who are a part of the Seint beauty company. The message was lessons from wildflowers and I wanted to share some of the takeaways and thoughts with you today.

Drawing inspiration from wildflowers, I encourage you to trust yourself and your own unique path, just like wildflowers do. Sometimes our human perspective can label us either as weeds or aswildflowers, but we should focus on our strengths, talents, and beauty rather than our weaknesses and insecurities.

You are NOT a weed. You are a WILDFLOWER 🌻

To conclude my keynote speech, I wrote a beautiful poem titled "Wildflower" that celebrates the strength, uniqueness, and nurturing qualities of wildflowers. I invite you to bloom like wildflowers, spreading your roots deep and wide and connecting with others to make a greater impact in the world.

So, what are you waiting for? It's time to embrace your uniqueness, trust yourself, and bloom like a wildflower

Is it possible to slow down and experience growth at the same time? We think the answer is no, but in fact sometimes the most growth comes when we take a step back, say no to things, put in boundaries and take a break. Today my guest Crystal Sparks and I talk about how you can do less, slow down, and in the end experience so much more.

Crystal is a speaker, podcaster, author and she's also a pastor at One Church in Texas. She is also one of the most influential people that in my own personal life, so I am just honored to have her on the podcast and to have this conversation.

One thing I love about life is all the lessons you can learn from our everyday experiences. Learning and growth is literally all around us, all the time. Today I'm excited to talk about this a particular lesson that I learned from my dog Cubby. Yep, lessons even from my 6 month old puppy and why I need to stop buying dog beds.

Don't worry this episode and lesson totally applies whether you have a dog of your own or not, in fact, it's not about the dog at all and I promise this solo episode will be good for your soul.

I had the chance to sit down with Macy Robinson and talk about a piece of growth from a different perspective. Macy talks about how we are the hero of our own stories or lives and that when looking for help we don't need another hero- we need a guide. Think about any great story, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, etc...they were the hero's BUT they had the help of a guide to assist them in their journeys.

We are the same way! As the hero's in our own lives and stories we are writing, we can look to guides to help us along our path. Tune in today for a more in depth explaination and a great conversation on growth.

Today Brooke and I share a conversation on raising teens, how to teach them, why it's different that in the past, and how we as parents are experiencing growth right alongside our teens. Two different types of growth happening at the same time, under the same roof. Raising teens tends to get a lot of bad press and being a mom of teenagers typically doesn't come with a guide book, until now. Brooke Romney is the author of 52 Manners for Modern Day Teens, a book which I have placed strategically in my entry way by a bowl of candy to enocurage my teens and any visiting friends to take a look at.

Her book, and this conversation is not one to miss. Whether you have teens or not, you'll walk away from this conversation feeling lifted up, inspired, and connected.

Melinda Doolitttle is in the middle of what she would call a growth spurt. In this conversation we talk about how growth isn't really a result we are after, or a destination to reach, but more of a constant process that we are going through. And she's currently going through it! Which is why this is the perfect time to have this conversation. So often we wait until we have "arrived" or have it figured out to share, but I am learning that sometimes sharing along the way and being vulnerable is when the most magic happens.

After coming in 3rd on Season 6 of American Idol, Melinda Doolittle left the world of background singing and was catapulted into the world of being an artist. Gracing stages from The White House to Carnegie Hall…The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to The Kennedy Center, Melinda has had the honor of achieving dreams she didn’t even know she had. Now, having released two CDs and a book, she is finding ways to give back in her community and abroad as she continues to tour with both her band, and symphonies across the country.

Each season of life brings new growth. It looks and feels different in each experience, but if we allow it, growth will be the result.

The dance of growth podcast will be full of encouraging and raw conversations surrounding  experiences of growth in life, business and motherhood. My hope is that it gives you an opportunity to reflect on your own life and you feel a little less alone in this journey.

Growth is like a dance, sometimes it’s fast, sometimes it’s slow, and sometimes the most impactful moments are found in no movement at all.
