Residential treatment can be a helpful start to recovery, but leaving residential treatment does not mean you’re automatically recovered. There are changes that need to happen, behaviour and neurobiology wise, at home. In this week’s episode, we discuss why I think residential treatment is not full recovery, and how you can make sure you progress further, whether that’s after you’ve left residential treatment, or if you’ve never had residential treatment in the first place.

In this episode, I share something new and personal: I’ve decided to intentionally gain 10–15 pounds as an experiment. Not because I’m underweight, not for aesthetics, but out of curiosity — to see how my body responds when I give it more.
As a fully recovered recovery coach at a healthy weight, and someone who is immunocompromised with Lyme disease, I want to know what this means for my energy, my hormones, and my overall health.
I talk about:
✨ Why I see this as biohacking, not dieting
✨ How trauma, appetite, and movement all play a role
✨ What challenges I expect (hello, body image + clothes)
✨ Why this experiment is about thriving, not sculpting
This is my antidote to a world obsessed with deficits and GLP-1s — and I hope it inspires you to think differently about what it means to care for your body.
Would you too like to leave me a voice-note? You can do so via my SpeakPipe!

People gain weight at different rates in recovery, but generally, it can happen a lot more quickly than you would ‘normally’ gain weight. At first, you may gain more weight than you’d expect based on your caloric intake, which may make you feel like your body is somehow broken. But in reality, it’s a sign of your body functioning. In this week’s episode, I explain the biology behind rapid weight gain during recovery: why does it happen, what does it mean, why is it good for you, and how can you cope? Tune in!

If you're suffering from an eating disorder, chances are: you do. And if you do, you may think you're addicted to food. In reality, however, food deprivation, even if it is 'only' mental food deprivation, can cause all of these symptoms. You're not addicted: you're deprived. In this week's episode we discuss how this constant thinking about food can occur as a result of deprivation, and how recovery and allowing yourself all food won't make this worse but will actually help. Tune in!

Lola is 19 years old, from the UK and one of my badass clients who I’ve been working with for almost a year. She found me through this podcast and decided to take a leap of faith and emailed me a year ago and now she’s on the pod! Oh how time flies.
She has done the Recovery Bootcamp program, a couple rounds of the Booster intensive, followed by the mini support and now we’re doing the membership card as she doesn’t need me as much anymore which is the whole point.
We’re going through Lola’s journey where she tells us how her eating disorder started, her experience with being dismissed by an OBGYN, missing periods, tackling fearfoods, traveling with an eating disorder and working with my method and how she ended up where she is now.
Lola is about 90% recovered and we’ll work together until she’s fully recovered. This journey goes to show that eating disorder recovery is NOT an overnight process and Lola will tell you all about it.
We’ll make sure she will be back on the podcast in a few months when she is actually FULLY recovered, because we’re not settling for anything less.

Intuitive eating is awesome! But what if the food you have at your disposal is different from what you're used to or craving? What if you have a chronic illness? Buckle up, because this is going to be a long one! For today's episode, I interviewed Bobbie, who has experience with an eating disorder and is autistic. We answer all of your questions regarding autism, as well as questions on extreme hunger. How does being autistic influence your recovery? What's the relation between autism and eating disorders? What struggles may autistic individuals experience which non-autistic individuals may not? What do you and those around you need to know? All of this is covered in today's episode!
My guide just launched! Bobbie, being my VA, also helped me in this process and we talk a bit about the wonders of the recovery community on Facebook that it has created! If you want to know more about this, be sure to listen to the episode and check out my website.

By now, you may know that extreme hunger in recovery is pretty normal, and that I always advice you to listen to this extreme hunger. But what if you feel like your extreme hunger is... well..., really extreme?! Is it still normal? Why may levels of extreme hunger differ from one person to the next, and why may your levels of extreme hunger vary over time? That, as well as whether you should listen to the extreme hunger even if it's really extreme (spoiler alert, the answer is yes), will all be answered in today's episode! Tune in!

Life has thrown A LOT at me lately. If you don't follow me on Instagram and don't know what's going on: I dislocated my jaw and can barely chew any foods... If you have an eating disorder you may now have a little voice in your head saying "I wish what were me...", but I no longer have an eating disorder and the fact that I could barely eat did not make me happy in any way. It's exhausting and painful, yet I also know I need to make sure to get enough calories. So how did I do it? I tell you all about it in this episode. Because whatever life throws at you, you do NOT need to go back to your eating disorder ways, and I want you to know that it is possible to not even want to go back there.

People around you may want you to recover, and maybe part of you wants to as well. Yet somehow, those around us can sometimes enable our eating disorders as well, even if they have the best intentions. Sometimes, making recovery more comfortable for someone who is struggling, can actually prevent certain parts of the eating disorder to be challenged. So how and why does that happen? What behavior may feel or seem good, but - in my eyes - is actually harmful, and what could you do instead? Tune in to find out, and don't be afraid to send this episode to those around you!

This week's episode is all about gastro-intestinal issues and chronic illness in recovery. As most of you probably know, I suffer from chronic Lyme's disease (and did so during my recovery as well), so I know a fair bit about chronic illness and recovery. However, even if you don't have any underlying health issues, you most likely will experience some physical discomfort during your recovery. I know all too well how disheartening it can be when you're trying to treat your body well, and it still hurts/hurts worse. Or how it can feel like your eating disorder actually was healthier when symptoms flare up during recovery. BUT I also know first-hand how physical discomfort/chronic illness can be a motivation/reason to recover. If you're wanting to break free from your eating disorder, but are struggling to cope with the physical discomfort during recovery, this episode is for you!

We've hit the 100th episode! This one is all about exercise and eating disorders. Eating disorders may not be about weight, and do not necessarily lead to weight loss, but weight-gain in recovery is pretty much inevitable, because it's necessary. I can hear the wheels of your eating disorder churning at that comment, producing words like "bad" and "unhealthy", but guess what... it is neither of those things. Today's episode is all about why it isn't bad or unhealthy and in fact, pretty much the opposite. So if you find yourself thinking "help, I don't want to gain weight", tune in to today's episode!

When you've struggled with an eating disorder, your idea of how much food your body needs may get a little bit distorted. Between restriction, food guilt, and diet culture, determining how many calories you actually need, can be incredibly hard. And those who experience extreme hunger often exclaim "surely I don't need to do that much catching up?!". Spoiler alert: You do. In today's episode I'll talk about how you know how much you need, why I can't tell you how much you need (and why diet culture can't either!), and why either way you don't need to count them.

In light of the launch of my newest project, the DVK® recovery guide (launching 26th of April 2024!), today's episode is all about 'recovering on your own'. Why do those around you matter and where (and how) can you find non-professional support that? All these topics will be discussed in this episode. But if you want a more in-depth discussion, as well as a step-by-step explanation of my very own - tried and trusted - recovery method (that I use with my clients) and access to a supportive, recovery friendly, Facebook group,be sure to check out my guide once it launches!

Eating disorders do not seldom come together with trauma, or cause trauma. Needing trauma treatment may make recovery or finding the appropriate resources harder, but it's definitely not impossible. In today's episode, I discuss more about the link between trauma healing and recovery, the do's and don'ts, and above all want to tell you: It is possible.

As most of you know, I have a chronic illness (lyme's disease). While at a certain point it motivated me in my recover, chronic illness, but also life-adversity in general, can be a HUGE trigger for (relapses of) eating disorders. So how do you deal with them without turning to food/your eating disorder as a way to cope? And if you do, how can you learn from it in order to avoid it in the future?

This week's episode is a personal one yet again... Due to my eating disorder, I have osteoporosis. In today's episode I explain the link between eating disorders and osteoporosis, and why you should take it seriously. It's not just a lie doctors tell you to scare you into recovery, and a lack of milk is not the cause even if your eating disorder tries to convince you of that. Tune in to learn more about the link between osteoporosis, eating disorders, and my personal experience with it!

Eating disorders do not always come alone. Sometimes they may be a way to cope with another issue, other times they're just there alongside it. So how do you deal with this? Is it worth it? (Yes!) Tune in for some comforting words on why recovery may not solve everything, but it will make life better nonetheless.

In today's episode, I talk openly and candidly about my experience with chronic illness, stress/PTSD from my chronic illness, and about my own current weight gaining journey. If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen my start of my weight-gain journey that I recently embarked on, after some unintentional weight loss. While I absolutely despised and feared weight gain when I had an eating disorder, nowadays I'm actually excited about it! There's been a lot of growth mentally. However, gaining weight post eating disorder does come with it's own challenges - in the absence of extreme- and mental hunger, it's definitely a whole different experience. Listen to this episode for some words on what weight-gain and body image can look like after an eating disorder, and get inspired!

Happy new year! We're kicking 2024 off with a review of a popular method in eating disorder recovery. The plate-by-plate approach® has been a popular method of nutritional rehabilitation in eating disorders for the past couple of years. And whilst I love that it at least isn't based on counting calories or macronutrients, I'm still not the biggest fan. In today's episode, I discuss what the approach looks like, the upsides, and the downsides, as well as touching on the differences between the plate-by-plate approach® and going all in. Tune in!

You may not want to gain weight, but the truth is that if you want to recover, you will have to. It doesn't need to be a goal per se, but it will happen, and if you keep avoiding it, you won't recover. But how do you do it? How do you accept you're going to gain weight and stop avoiding it? In today's episode we talk all about how to get yourself to actually take step towards recovery and dealing with weight-gain in the process.

With the holiday's around the corner and aunt Susy in the back of your head exclaiming how she "barely ate all day so she could enjoy a nice dinner!", it's no wonder if you're finding yourself wanting to (or feeling like you need to) restrict before the Christmas holidays. However, I'm here to remind you that absolutely you do not need to restrict before the holidays or any other event. In today's episode I talk about how to navigate around that nagging voice in your head, and explain why event restriction is not only unnecessary, but actually harmful to your recovery and joy-taker. So tune in!

I've talked about feasting in recovery more often - on why it's not only logical but necessary to fuel your body with A LOT of food that's easily digestible (aka 'processed foods') and foods that you've restricted for so long. But what if you feel like you're there - you've recovered from your restrictive eating disorder, be that anorexia, bulimia or OSFED, and you're still "stuffing your face"?! In today's episode I talk about why feasting after recovery is not to be feared, why it doesn't mean you've developed 'binge eating disorder' (and why that is in no way 'worse' or 'less desirable' than any other eating disorder), and how to deal with it. Tune in for some comforting words as well as my personal (current!) experience with feasting, and learn how to be okay with 'feasting' before, during, and after recovery.

It's almost Christmas! The most wonderful time of the year? With all the festivities going on, everyone being hyperfocused on foods and drinks, and often a lot of dining with loved ones, Christmas can be a very stressful time for those suffering from an eating disorder. You may be scared that you'll 'binge' or worried about not having control over your food, and to top it all off, a lot of people feel like they have the right to comment on your intake. So how exactly do you deal with the holidays when you're recovering from an eating disorder, and how do you navigate (positive or negative) comments from family members about your intake or your weight? Listen to this episode to find out how, once you've taken that very brave step of going all-in, you can make these holidays a safe time, let it aid your recovery, and enjoy all the yummy Christmas foods!

Mealplans can be super helpful when recovering from an eating disorder. However, you're not going to always eat according to a meal-plan. So when is the best time to transition from a meal plan into intuitive eating, to avoid relapsing into anorexia, bulimia, or OSFED? And just how rigid do meal-plans need to be anyway? Tune in to find out!

Many people who start real recovery, have experienced quasi recovery. It's a hell of a place to be in, but on the outside, you may seem 'fine' or even 'healthy'. As people stop watching you as closely and you start to convince yourself that you're recovered, actually recovering may seem 'useless' and scary. But that's not to say that it isn't the best choice. Because there is an actual good life after an eating disorder - a life without binging, restricting, purging, dieting, and selfhate. Today we discuss why quasi recovery is actually the most dangerous phase to be in. If you're in need of some motivation to recover from anorexia, bulimia, OSFED, or disordered eating, and get out of that quasi recovery phase, be sure to tune in to today's episode!

If you've struggled with an eating disorder or disordered eating - whether that's anorexia, bulimia, BED or any other eating disorder - chances are, you've experienced 'binging'. Heck, even people without eating disorders have probably binged at some point in their life. Feasting - as I like to call binging - is absolutely normal and actually insanely helpful when you are in recovery from an eating disorder. In today's episode I explain why that is, why I think (residential) treatments often get it completely wrong, and hope to comfort you in letting you know that you're not broken or bad when you eat in abundance.

If you've been on the eating disorder recovery side of any social media platform lately, you may have heard about how Tabitha Farrar recently claimed that not only is it possible to recover from your eating disorder in six weeks, it's also what will happen if you are truly motivated and trying. And while I'm generally a big fan of her work, and have used knowledge from her book in both my personal recovery and my work as a coach, in today's episode I'm going to discuss why I think the claim that 'truly motivated people' will recover in six weeks is harmful, how long I think recovery may actually take, and why it's more than okay to take time to recover. Tune in for some support and motivation to keep going on this road, and be assured that as long as you're trying, you're doing just fine.

In episode 2 of season 2, we continue on with the Q&A. Today's episode is all about what your physical health says about your eating disorder and what happens to it when you start recovering from your eating disorder. Like why you may retain some water (a.k.a. edema) when recovering, why the fact that the scale goes up doesn't matter, and what (not) getting your period at a low body weight says about your eating disorder. Furthermore, I discuss what place protein bars have in recovery - how beneficial is this fitness-food for you? Tune in to find out!
My new program, the Mini Support program, is starting soon! It's fully booked for now, but I've got other programs as well and there may be some spots opening up again in the future! If you are interested in working with me, feel free to take a look at my website and sign-up or contact me.

Season 2 has started! Welcome to this new season of Recovering with Danie. We’re starting the season where we left off last week, answering more of your questions regarding eating disorder recovery, food, fitness, and diet culture. In today’s episode, I talk about finding yourself when you’re recovering from an eating disorder - who are you besides (and without) mental health issues? And while you’re in recovery, how do you deal with food guilt, body shaming, and counting calories, especially considering all these things are so normalised in today’s society (thanks, diet culture…)?
I’m here to give you your weekly dosis of inspiration and advice to kick your eating disorder out of your life. So tune in!

You keep asking good questions, and so I keep answering them! Although only a very few percentage of eating disorder sufferers is underweight, diet culture and many mental health facilities make a big deal out of recovering when you’re not underweight. So how do you do it? Why do you have to gain weight when you recover from a restrictive eating disorder, and how do you cope with the weight gain itself, as well as with comments from friends, family, and (mental) health professionals? And on that note… is eating sugar really that bad? What if you are “addicted to sugar” (spoiler alert: you’re not), how do you (not) stop?
And while I offer outpatient treatment, sometimes, going inpatient may be necessary or helpful. Curious to know what I think about inpatient treatment, or do you want to know more about how to cope with the challenges (both positive and negative) you may face when going inpatient, and how to get better rather than worse? Tune in to today’s episode!

In the second part of this Q&A, Danie answers some more listener questions about eating disorder recovery, exercise addiction, body positivity and body shaming, and more. Do you wonder whether you're ever too old for recovery, or find yourself not knowing how to start recovery? Or what a thin body does(n't) have to do with recovery? How about gaining muscle instead of gaining weight? If you're curious about any of these topics, be sure to tune in!
If you find these episodes helpful, be sure to give my podcast a follow and share it with friends, family members, and anyone whom you think may benefit from it, so this podcast can reach more people!

In an earlier episodes, we already discussed the dangers of meal plans and how to use them effectively. But, if you’re just starting recovery and/or treatment, you may not even have a meal plan or a plan in general. In today’s episode, Danie talks about the whether you need (meal)plans to recover from your eating disorder, and tips and tricks on how to (not) use or make them. Tune in for your weekly dosis of motivation and advice and boost your recovery!

The way you speak to yourself matters. But how, exactly? In today’s episode Danie explains the dangers of negative self talk in recovery, and why she wants her clients to give them the permission and love they seek from those around them, within themselves. If you’re in recovery and what to scare away the eating disorder voice with a healthy voice, be sure to listen to this next episode of Recovering with Danie!

So, you start doing what you've been scared of this entire time: Recovery. And as it turns out, it's not as scary as you thought it would be, maybe you even find yourself enjoying it! Many people with an eating disorder will wonder if this is 'weird', or whether they maybe never even had an eating disorder to begin with. After all, aren't you supposed to spend recovery crying/screaming/kicking? Not at all. In today's episode, Danie discusses the phenomenon of the honeymoon phase in recovery, as well as the issue with using the fact that 'you have to gain weight anyway' as a reason for eating. Because you're allowed to eat regardless of whether you have to gain weight. So tune in to find out how you can reframe those thoughts!

It can sometimes seem like 'methods' to recover from your eating disorder are just as 'trendy' as fad-diets. If you've been on the recovery side of social media at all in the past couple of years, you're likely to have heard of all-in and Minnie Maud, and more recently, lots of people have been documenting their recovery journey on TikTok. So what do these terms mean, how do they differ, and are these 'trends' any good? Danie discusses all this and more in today’s episode, so tune in!

Mindful eating and intuitive eating are hot topics - any food or sports influencer will talk to you about how you need to eat mindfully and tune into your body's fullness signals. But what if you're in recovery? How do does concepts apply to you, and how do you know when it's your intuition/body telling you to stop eating, and when it's your eating disorder? Danie discusses all this and more in today's episode!

One of the most frequently asked questions has been: "Will I develop Binge Eating Disorder after having had a restrictive ED?", and as it turns out, it's not just people with eating disorders who think they will, but Google seems to think the same thing. In today's episode, Danie discusses the science behind these claims, and why binging/feasting during recovery does not mean you'll replace one eating disorder with another. In fact, binging/feasting during recovery (and after!) can get you from quasi recovery to life without an eating disorder.

If you’re recovering, you may frequently worry about what your life will look like after recovery, or you may romanticise it. The reality is most likely that your life after recovery is somewhat of a mix between the amazing things you suspect, and the harder things you may be trying to avoid with your eating disorder. The crucial difference between how it was and how it will be, however? The fact that you’ll be better equipped to handle it. In today’s episode, Danie gives you a glimpse into what life after recovery can be like, not ignoring the bad parts, but also focussing on the good parts of life after recovery, and how it may be different (better!) to what you expect!

So, you decide to take the plunge: You start eating a little bit more. To see if what everyone tells you, "that really won't make you gain any weight", is true. But then... you do?!
If you've ever experienced this, you may have assumed your body is broken and there's a good chance your eating disorder has used it as a reason to stay. Today, however, Danie wants to challenge that idea, and rather than using fear like your eating disorder does, she uses science to explain why you may gain weight on a low intake, why that doesn't mean your body is broken (on the contrary), and why it isn't the end of the world, like, at all...
Tune in to get some science-backed truths in a bite-size chunk you can use to kindly shove your eating disorder out the door.

In today's episode we talk about the idea of faking your eating disorder. When you start recovery, you may notice yourself enjoying the freedom and the food that it gives you. Recovery certainly doesn't always look like crying over food and smashing plates, but when it doesn't, you may hear a sneaky voice inside your head say "well..., do you even have an eating disorder then"? And that little voice is your eating disorder speaking. Tune in to find out how to silence these thoughts and why enjoying recovery is not just 'fine', but actually good!

Recovery can be confusing - between well-meaning, but not always helpful, advice from friends, family, and treatment professionals; your eating disorder's opinion; and diet-culture, it's no wonder recovery doesn't always go smoothly. And you definitely don't have to do recovery perfectly, but having gone through recovery herself, Danie understands the need for some guidance in figuring out what is and isn't the right approach. As such, in today's episode, Danie discusses what was and wasn't helpful in her recovery - which mistakes did she make, and which mantra's did she find to work really well? Tune in!

Many people believe going to the gym is healthy, and it can be. However, it certainly doesn't have to be. Recently there's been a worrying trend of people saying they've recovered from an eating disorder showcasing their fitness-journey and 24/7 'gym-life' on social media. In today's episode, we discuss whether you can actually recover from an eating disorder by going to the gym, and what the dangers and obstacles are when it comes to incorporating fitness into your recovery.

In this week's episode, Danie discusses two types of hunger that may confuse you when you're in recovery. Because why do you get hungry when you eat?! And why is your body screaming for lots of energy when you're going to bed (a.k.a. 'resting')? As you may suspect if you've listened to a few episodes already, this is not because your body is dumb or confused. There's a perfectly logical reason for it, and honouring both types of hunger is extremely important for your physical and mental hunger. So tune in to understand why this happens, how to 'solve' it, and how to make it easier on yourself!

Do neural rewiring and nutritional rehabilitation go hand-in-hand? Too often, recovering from an eating disorder is focused on getting an 'adequate' amount of food, which may in and of itself be scary for someone with an eating disorder, but it just may be "not scary enough". In today's episode, Danie explains why rewiring may not happen even if you are nutritionally rehabilitating, and what extra steps you have to take to get there. Because eating disorders are not about food and physique - and so neither should recovery!

In today's episode, Danie explains how she has been dealing with that and gives tips on how to deal with the loneliness that comes with/during recovery? Because although you're definitely not the only one in recovery and experiencing all the beautiful and the difficult things that come with it, it sure may feel that way. So how do you feel that connection and open up? And how do you deal with the loneliness in general? Tune in to catch up, get motivated, and feel connected!

In this first episode, we’re covering why recovery is worth it. Spontaneity is something that an eating disorder doesn’t like whatsoever, since it’s all about rigidity and everything needs to be planned out to a T.
Boring, right?
In the upcoming episodes I will try to do my best to cover as many eating disorder recovery related topics, but I will also sprinkle in subjects like dating, relationships, intimacy, self reflection, self sabotage, inner critic, having a chronic illness, navigating life in your 30s, basically anything that has to do with normal day today life.
