1 Peter 3:18-22 is packed with several challenging ideas. In this sermon, we will focus on verse 18 and the truth of Christ’s suffering. Secondly, we will focus on verse 22 and the triumph of Christ’s suffering.

1 Suffering persecution for following Jesus will not ultimately harm you so you do not have to fear it.
2 Suffering persecution for following Jesus is a pathway to blessing. It was for Jesus and it is for you so you can trust God in it.

Peter shows us, from Psalm 34, how to love life and see good days, even if we face opposition, persecution, and tribulation. He applies the Psalm’s teaching in four ways
1) Payback blessing for cursing and good for evil v. 8-9.
2) Speak the truth in love never a lie in hate v. 10.
3) Seek peace and pursue it v. 11.
4) Live like what God says and sees and hears is more important than what anyone else does v. 12.

At the heart of his letter he delivers the heart of his message (2:11-12), followed by its costly relational application in various spheres of culture: political (2:13-17), economic (2:18-20), and familial (3:1-7). It is in times when the reason for hardship cannot be seen that trust in God alone seems to become most pure and precious in his sight. To understand life, we have to understand what people are. So reality is not created by us & our feelings, and some of our most fundamental relationships are not ultimately chosen by us but by God, and God’s rules are neither random nor harmful but are built into the loving & wise design of the world and the people in it.
