We also have a lot of friends who are brilliant, and we want to record their wisdom and share it with you. Come along with us on a journey of creation, reflection, and self-improvement. Do you believe there can be such a thing as productive procrastination (or as I call it 'tasty procrastinashy').

Here's the idea. Most people are going to procrastinate. It's a behavior that is rampant now more than ever. So what I'm suggesting here is that if you're going to procrastinate anyway, why not make it useful for you?

Thomas and Alex rip the idea to shreds, but I guess only you can decide if it holds up in the end.

We also hit on the idea of productive downtime-- maximizing the time you're stuck with nothing to do (like being in line at the grocery store). Instead of mindlessly scrolling social media, is it possible to use that scattered time in small chunks to get things finished?

I'm interested to see what you all think, and if you've given either of these principles a try.

Alright, so for a full 30 days, a few people in our family (me, my wife, and my mom) decided to cut any sugar that doesn't occur naturally, dairy, grains (and other things) on a program called the Whole30. It's basically a way to "reboot" your body, and then slowly reintroduce foods to see what has adverse affects on you.

(One note is that it's not paleo or keto, you can have sugars in fruit. Mmm. Fruit. Oh, also potatoes. So yeah, it's not no/low carb.)

It was astounding how much cutting out sugar made me feel. Like, yikes. And buddy, the grogginess and headaches you have that first week are ROUGH (and prove how much my body was relying on sugar.

I learned a lot, but I think what surprised me the most was how many foods contain sugar. I'm talking about foods that many would consider "healthy". Things like:

  • Pasta sauce
  • Canned soup
  • Granola bars
  • Yogurt
  • Fruit juice

The list goes on and on.

Anyway, it definitely changed the way I eat, and now that I've added back in some dairy and other things, it's very sustainable.

If you're interested in learning more, this episode of UltraMultifarious is all about sugar, and some of the facts might surprise you.

Greetings friends and Multifarians!

Have you ever been reading a book, watching a movie, or enjoying a television show when the writers blatantly break their own rules? If so what was an instance of this that has stuck with you?

We also talk about the realism of media, and the new expected benchmarks, and how the television show CSI had a strange and unexpected effect on the actual American criminal justice system.

We hope you enjoy, and keep on Multifarian'.

Here's a question for all of my friends. Have you become pickier about what sorts of media you'll devote your time to? With the vast number of television shows, movies, books, music, and games to experience, have you found that your tastes are a little more stringent? Or is it the opposite? Will you muscle through less enjoyable things?

In this episode, we discuss how I (Tim) have become a bit of a picky, planet-eating monster when it comes to finding the next piece of media to consume. Whether it's an album a television show, movie, book or any other media, is being extra selective a curse of entitlement, and am I missing out? Or am I creating a more refined, curated experience?

Join me and Alex as we talk this through, and try to come to terms with what it means and whether it's good or bad.

Have you ever seen something that you're certain was real, but that no one would ever believe? If so (and you're willing to share), we'd love to hear about it.

In this episode, we talk about a person who told Alex they had seen-- and possibly killed- a werewolf. This person was perfectly rational and seemingly sane in every other way, but believed this to be true.

So, was it true? And is the brain a reliable machine when it comes to showing us what our reality truly is? Let's find out using some Armchair Science.

Do you think that writer's block exists? If so, is it misnamed? Or something completely different altogether?

In this episode, we put forth (with our own armchair research-based evidence) why writer's block as we know it doesn't exist, and how the brain is wired to be creative in a specific way.

We'll also dig into the sophomore slumps of some creators and our take on why that phenomenon occurs so frequently.

We hope you enjoy it, and appreciate you hanging out with us each week.

Do you binge watch shows? Or take your time? Do you prefer the Disney+ weekly release model, or the Netflix "all shows at once" situation? Also: what is the statute of limitations on spoilers for television and movies? Are they different? What about books?

We talk about all of this and more (including a half-eaten sandwich that would get us all thrown in jail).

Enjoy, Multifarians!

We found one of the few people in the world that could make learning about musical theater not only super informative but a ton of fun. We'd like you all to meet our great friend Jacob Lowrey. In this episode of UltraMultifarious, Jacob takes us sweet summer children and guides us by the hand helping us appreciate this one-of-a-kind art form.

If you listen until the end, you'll also hear a story of how Jacob got to have a once-in-a-lifetime moment with one of his most admired heroes just days before that person passed away. (You'll also learn a little-known secret about John Williams' link to something much older than him...)

We hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening, Multifarians!

It's the Season 02 opener! In this episode, we talk about how the "shape" of your opinion can change when it comes to enjoying various things in our lives. Who you are today might appreciate a song or television show or movie you never liked previously. You may also find that something you used to enjoy has lost its luster. We also talk a bit about why some of us purposefully avoid popular trends-- sometimes just because they're popular trends. In this episode, your opinion is shaped funny, and it will likely also be a different funny shape sometime soon... and maybe that's okay.

Greetings Multifarians! In this episode, Tim tries out some of the stand-up comedy he's got written in the notepad on his phone for Alex and Thomas. Hilarity does (and in some cases does not) ensue. Jokes and concepts are critiqued, and feedback is given freely.

You'll also learn about some vocabulary words that are (and some that are not) related to comedy, including "chittering" (to make a twittering or chattering sound) and "bits" (a series of related jokes that a comedian strings together into a few minutes of material), as well as a few other fun words.

Thank you for the immense and continued support for this podcast, you are all incredible, and we can't thank you enough.

Keep on multifarian'.

Folks, we're way too fat for this. In this episode, we talk about our journeys with weight loss... and weight gain. We talk about where we are now, and where we want to be, and discuss some of the strange patterns in our thinking when it comes to weight loss. Why do we "want to start on Monday" when it comes to fitness Why do we sometimes quit altogether after making one mistake? We'll share sine some super practical tips, and also give you a strong dose of our Armchair Research (patent pending). We hope you enjoy, and remember-- this isn't medical advice. Talk to your physician before starting any exercise or dieting plans.

For those interested, this episode does debut the finished (rough mix) of the UltraMultifarious theme song. Enjoy!

So what's the episode about? Many of us want to create in some way. From music, to carpentry, to sewing, to painting, to writing-- to anything else creative or otherwise-- we often wait for the "perfect" circumstances before we even get started. In our opinion, this is a mistake.

Sure it's wise to count the cost and plan before beginning, but don't try to perfect every little detail before you even get started or the odds are, you never, ever will.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and we can't wait to see what you get start making progress on today.

Alex had an idea for an UltraMultifarious theme song, so in this episode, I wanted to experiment with the format. We're joined by my youngest brother Thomas, and we attempt to take you on a journey that goes from talking about a theme song to a finished product. Here are some things you can expect.

  • Phase 1 - We pick Alex's brain about the song he's hearing in his head trying to understand it better. We also discuss some high-level songwriting techniques and concepts.
  • Phase 2 - We actually strap on instruments and bash out a working version of the theme song.
  • Phase 3 - At the end of this episode, you'll hear the work-in-progress recording of the UltraMultifarious theme song (minus bass guitar and vocals).

We had a blast, so we hope you enjoy the show, and would love any feedback on this experimental format.

In this episode, we talk about how super popular bands like U2, Metallica, and others who span decades of ever-growing popularity seem to be dying off. Is that true? If so why? We also talk about the short-form content landscape of TikTok and other social media, and the effect that it has on people's creative output-- for better and for worse.

Keep on Multifarian'.

Tim tells Alex the name of the podcast live during recording and gets honest first thoughts. All manner of emotions ensue. About this podcast:

I believe you can learn something new about everything. And I want to learn so much about so many things. This is a podcast about doing that. I also have a lot of friends who are brilliant, and I want to record their wisdom. Come along with me on a journey of creation, reflection, and self-improvement. Ultra means "very" or "extremely." Multifarious means "having many varied parts or aspects."

UltraMultifarious means leaning into the fact that humans are curious creatures who are wired to ask questions and create things.

If Seinfeld was a "show about nothing" think of this as "a podcast about everything."
