This episode is a great one because for a long time, we've seen acrobatics brought into the performing arts studio environment. Sometimes they are delivered really well and other times, they need improvement and lots of work.
Sometimes it's really hard to find teachers who are qualified or have the skills and the safety knowledge around bringing Acro into our studios, in a way that is engaging but also using safe practice.
Peter Pearson is an Acro expert who helps develop acro-ready teaches and is the founder and CEO of ACROTRIX. Peter trained as a gymnast for over 15 years and has run an internationally successful acro school for over eight years. Enjoy the interview with Peter!

Carla Tierney is a brave and resilient Studio Owner from a small country town about two and a half hours north of West Brisbane, Australia. A town known for mining, meat works, and farming, that has a high level of the community on social benefits.
In this episode of 'Business, Arts and All That Jazz', we talk about what life is truly like for regional and country studios.
Carla has had the trifecta when it comes to challenges, including a decrease in mining which majorly effected the local work opportunities and clients. Her area also experienced a drought, which meant that cattle farmers and crop farmers were unable to produce, again, leaving the community financially vulnerable. Then, came the a pandemic, which is a story we all know too well.
Despite all of the challenges of regional studio ownership, she also shares the the beauty of country life and how the community comes together. She loves her town, community and business and it was a privilege to catch a glimmer into Carla's life and bright, fighting spirit.

Have you ever heard the saying "What Got You Here, Won't Get You There".
I truly believe this is how successful people think and grow their businesses. Whatever you did to get you to this point within your studio biz has been great! You made it this far and I am a believer that you are exactly where you're meant to be (right now).
BUT, if you want something to shift or change within your business or life, and if you want to grow and develop further, something has to change. Doing the same old thing isn't going to move the needle in your business. In this episode I share how I make impactful moves in my business.
Imagine what your studio would look like, if you had a plan, achieving everything you strive for every 90 days?
Listen in to learn how to apply 90 day planning in your studio with EASE.

Have you reached a point where you don't want to teach anymore? It can happen!
Sometimes as Studio Owners we feel DONE. TIRED. NON INSPIRED or perhaps it is simply a case of wanting to focus your intention on other parts of your life or business.
Even if it's not you just yet, tune in because it could be you in the future. So let's talk about it and get REAL in part 2 of my 3 part series... Real Talk!
MEET ME IN PERSON? LET'S DO IT!

Today I am introducing to you done at Real talk, real talk will be a three part series where I get down and dirty. And I talk about all the things that are super real in your studio. And I peel back the curtain on the truth. Because I just want you to be feeling comfortable, that whatever's going on in your space is normal. And it's okay. And maybe my situation is worse than it was. And then you can feel super better about yourself. No real talk, part one is going to deep dive into being a parent in studio basically. So if you've got kids, or family that is in your studio, you know, it can be a little bit tricky, it can be beautiful. But it can also be a little bit tricky. And so it's about walking that fine line of being the business owner, and also being a parent, in the classroom and in your business. So that's part one, everybody. So stay tuned.

I'm talking about what I believe to be a chronic problem in the performing arts industry. That is suffering from starving artist syndrome.
The problem is that we don't know how to value ourselves at times, because we're so passionate about the art, creative process and the giving our of our energy to others, we can put ourselves secondary to our craft.
I get very personal in this episode and share my experience with overcoming my starving own starving artist mindset.
Ultimately I can give you all the systems and payment processes in the world, but unless you believe in your core that you are worthy of what you want and need from your clients and business, then any system I give you is redundant, because you need to believe it, to action it.
Let's talk about money blocks and self reflect. Enjoy the show!

Today, I am speaking with marketing expert Haley Osbourne. We are talking about how you can become the number one studio in your local area.
As small businesses, we need to be relevant, we need to not only attract but retain our clients and students. And the way we do that is through strategy. Now Hailey is going to come at us with some great ideas that I think you aren't going to be able to implement into your studio business pretty much straight away.
Now, Hayley left the corporate world with a backpack filled with 15 years of knowledge on social media brand strategy and marketing, along with a huge passion and purpose to empower business owners and entrepreneurs to build and market their brands strategically and authentically. And what I love about Haley is that she has so much experience working with not only big business, but small business as well.
We talk about becoming the go to studio we talk about becoming locally famous. And I really think it's important to have some tangible, tangible ideas and strategies around how to actually achieve that. So I think you're definitely in for a treat. Haley says, I've arrived to inspire you to be the best version of yourself and therefore the best you can possibly be in your business, taking the stress out of marketing and social media, so you can focus on the business aspects you love.
Now, as creatives, it's so important that we do continue to focus on our passion and our love for the arts. So you know, to take that stress out of the marketing process is such a big deal. Such a big deal. And you know, we're going to explore that a little bit as well in today's topic. So here we go with the show. You know what's next. Haley Osborne, let's kick it off.

It is time to love up your customers! Remembering that there are 2 key clients in a Studio Business which you need to love and essentially retain. I am talking about the 'student' and the 'payer' who may be a parent in most studio scenarios.
I have some retention GOLD that has helped me keep my students for longer which I will share with you in this episode.
Sure!! Great classes and programs is a part of the retention puzzle BUT it is merely a part.
There are so many contributing factors including community engagement and connection, high value offers and inclusions, the surprise and delight factor, collaborating with local businesses, affiliate benefits, streamlined payment processes and more!
Another way to retain your students and customers is by creating a dream studio space that has a buzz within its walls. A Talent Management service and in-house Talent Agency can absolutely achieve this retention you desire as you give your students amazing industry opportunities on-screen and onstage.

Have you ever wondered how you can maximize social media to build, reach and gain traction and engage your community and potential clients?
Today we're joined by Tamara Scamporlino, a studio owner from Sydney who's been doing this for nearly two decades. She is the director of vibes dance studio, which offers an array of dance programs from two years.
Tamara has a great presence on social media for her business. She talks about the strategy behind that, and how she really leverages off that community and that online platform, and how she creates and delivers content within her team.
It's a great story as well, she's going to share the ups and downs of the last couple of years and how they've evolved online to really create a great online presence. It's a really, really interesting topic that I'm sure you will enjoy.
Tamara, is awesome. She is also one of my clients that has graduated from my flagship course Talent Manager Bootcamp. She has now started her own in house talent management service, which is super exciting! Recently after just launching she got that first audition in the door, which is so exciting for her students as well.
She's also a member of my Talent squad membership, which is a mastermind group for studio owners who really want to level up their business and get the support for how they can provide a talent management service within their studio. Now, this is not just for people who are talent managers. But this this mastermind is essentially for people who are also looking to become talent managers in the near future. So it's so great to have one of my talent manager bootcamp graduates and a member of my talent squad here on the show.
She's going to share her experience and expertise in the social media space and how she uses team and the skills of team to deliver the message and her brand message. This is what this is about. Delivering a strong brand message on line.
You're in for a treat. Welcome to the show, Tamara. Here we go.

As creatives, we can lose our minds when it comes to the 'big pie in the sky' ideas as we focus on the next shiny thing. Oh... being creative is so much fun!!
Today is going to be about the flow of ideas that we have and how we can sort through them so they can be prioritised according to what you need and desire for your business.
We also need to look at the energy input of an idea - from it's inception to its execution and if when you look at the whole picture, it truly what you want right now? Or is it something you can create in the future?

That old chestnut! What to pay your staff hmmm.... Deciding what rate to pay our employees and contractors can be confusing and overwhelming at times. So what should we pay our teachers and staff?
The focus must be not to hire from desperation but rather, from a place of clarity that sits comfortably within our budget and business needs.
Despite what some prospective employees may say, it's not about the money. There are many ways to attract the right people to your organisation.
In this episode I will cover various pay rates, employee VS contractor and also what questions you need to ask yourself before making a hire. It needs to work for you.

It's time to be candid about the year that has passed as I share with you my 2022 business (and life) annual review. It was not all smooth sailing but there were some highlights for sure.

You need to dedicate real time to set achievable goals. Imagine what your studio would look like if you had a plan, achieving everything you strive for every 90 days?
Back to the show... In episode 65 of Business, Arts and All That Jazz, I bring you the ups and the downs of 2022, the things that worked and the things that didn't work! Hopefully my overshare brings you something you can resonate with. Perhaps you may be inspired or learn from my experience of this year, because it's been a whirlwind, that is for sure.
After coming out of COVID, we all went back into full throttle mode after what was a traumatic couple of years. I tried some new things in my studio business and also launched new things in my coaching business. I hit burnout recently and realised I did not give myself the chance to stop as I have been in flight or fight mode in my business, surviving this pandemic. How do you cope with stress? In this episode we explore the importance of asking ourselves this question and discuss mental wellness in the dance and performance industry space. To lead this conversation, I am joined by the creators of Danscend, Kristin Deiss & Michelle Loucadoux.
Danscend's mission is to bring mental wellness to the forefront of dance training by providing a space for education, application, and community to dancers, educators and professionals alike.
These ladies have been working together in the education field for seven years, and created this business due to the overwhelming need that they observed in their students. Both creators wrestled with various issues in their professional dance careers which we touch on in the show.
Kristen and Michelle have created resources that they wish were available when they were beginning their dance careers, such as their free eBook, "Coping with Stress".

Have you ever run a class or program that just isn't getting the numbers and you keep trying to make it work? Have you ever run an event where you simply didn't sell enough tickets? Perhaps you didn't engage the people you wanted to and you ran it anyway!
Today, I'm going to tap into the topic of low profit business activities, because I bet your bottom dollar that you've said yes to one of my first questions.
Running programs and events at a loss is not fun OR a great way to do business, however many Studio Owners and Creatives do this time, and time again! It is time to assess the situation and take an inward look at what's working for you and what no longer serves you.

It’s never too late to do what you love and to help others do the same!
Today I have the wonderful Katy Abbott who is a music composer, and also has an art education brand, The Artists Mentor, with services including one on one coaching, and other course content.
Katy didn’t start getting into music until her 20s, which goes to show that you can achieve anything! She brings a beautiful cross between her education business and her artistry.
We’re going to explore Katy’s journey and how she manages her magical blend of mentoring artists and composing. We're also going to find out how Katy is forensically curious about what makes us tick. She explores our passions through music, and she explores fears and motivations using contemporary musical flavours in traditional musical settings. Amusing the concepts of connection place and humour, Abbott's compositions are performed and published and recorded around the world.
She has done amazing things across Australia, but also over in the UK and Europe and abroad. She's won numerous prestigious awards, including the Boston Metro Opera Gold Prize for Art Song, as well as the Australia Council of the Arts Fellowship Award. She also has five solo albums of her work on ABC Classics, and Move Records, along with many more musical adventures.

Do you struggle being paid on time from your clients? Do you waste hours upon hours and have sleepless nights chasing the dollars owed to you?
A few years back, a client who was very late in paying her class tuition came into the studio. I said to her at reception "Hey there! I noticed you haven't paid your fees. Are you able to fix that up today?" Back then this was an awkward conversation for me.
She responded to my request for payment by saying "I'm so sorry, I'm broke! I've just gotten back from Bali. And I've just bought myself a new car". No joke, she bought herself a black mustang.
She went on to say "I've just spent all my money on this Mustang and this Bali holiday so I am literally broke". At that moment, I just remember being mute. I was actually shocked. I didn't have a response.
Times have changed ALOT since then. Now I have systems in place to get paid on time, every time from my clients. Listen in to episode 34 of 'Business, Arts and All That Jazz'

Granted, studio automation isn't exactly the sexiest topic but it's a conversation that MUST be had! This especially applies to Creatives and creative business owners, because you want to make space for your creativity to thrive.
Spreadsheets may not make you as hot as bed sheets, however once you do the leg work and set up the systems and automation required for success, you will have the time you desire to ponder on your ideas and take action on projects you constantly delay, because you simply don't have the mind space or time to execute them.
In this episode of Business, Arts and All That Jazz, we explore the world of studio automation and growth with the lovely Dancepreneur, Studio Owner and Podcaster, Claire O’Shea.

If you are a Studio Owner or Show Producer who has had to postpone their 2021 productions and deliver them this year, you may understand the anguish of delaying a show.
I have experienced this recently where I delivered 6 months worth of productions in a 30 day period, during what would normally be our team holiday season… and it was EXHAUSTING!
There were moments where I was unsure if it was worth doing at all and also, moments where I was proud and elated from the experience of coming through for my clients and patrons. All in all, there were definite pros AND cons, which I happily share with you in this episode.
One thing is for sure, it made me question my mantra of “the show must go on!” as I began to consider the reasons WHY it must. MUST the show go on? At what point is it ok to pull the plug? Or change your delivery promise? I have some answers to these questions.
I openly share the financial losses I experienced during show week due to refunds and reduced sales, as well as share the personal and community gains. I hope this show helps you in the decision making process when it comes to your next production outcome. Or, perhaps provokes thought as to how we should navigate production experiences, and at what cost to us? (as the business owner or producer)
