In our current American culture, morality for the three most recent generations has been built around feelings, social norms, and legal codes. The problem with each of these foundations is that they shift over time and bend to the group's demands. Without a fixed point of reference, they force people to live like someone lost in the dark without a clear direction.
Thankfully, there are ways we can work to measure morality to ensure that our system of beliefs applies to a fixed standard that does not shift over time. By examining the four areas of mutuality, meaningfulness, modernity, measurability, and being moored to a fixed point of reference, we can see that the classical Christian worldview is the only one that satisfactorily meets each of these requirements for morality.

However, when we study the Bible in context, we can experience a proper mindset for viewing God's plan for restoring all people in every part of the planet through Jesus' sacrificial death. In our culture, making promises takes work. Trusting someone to keep their word can be challenging, so we require something in return. It may be collateral that we return when the promise is kept or interest charged until a loan is repaid, but because people are hard to trust, we have difficulties believing they will keep their word. Thankfully, God does not break His promises. When He says He will do something, we can trust Him to do it faithfully. In the Bible, God makes numerous promises to His people. But there are 7 big ones we call covenants where God does something that impacts everyone as a result of it. These 7 covenants are the bridges between God's past promises and His future faithfulness. It has been said that motherhood is the exquisite inconvenience of being another person's everything. This is certainly true in the hearts and minds of little children (and us bigger ones) that have been loved and raised well by amazing mothers. It's nice being a member of an organization because memberships always bring perks. It may be discounts on purchases, access to opportunities, or even a form of pride that we show off to others. What can easily be confused with membership, however, is relationship. When I have a relationship with someone, it has perks as well. But the purpose of the relationship is not the bonuses it sometimes gives; it is the person we are connected to. As Jesus finished His teachings in what we call the Sermon on the Mount, we will see that in God's Kingdom, there is a vast difference between membership and relationship. God doesn't want us to simply be members of a church community, He wants us to have a relationship with Him that lasts for eternity.
It is easy to say something about yourself, but it is harder to prove it. I can tell someone I'm a marathoner, but what if they never see me running? There are always external actions that overflow from our internal identity. This is one of the great truths of life that Jesus wants His followers to know and apply. Prayer is a difficult thing for many people. Some revert to the old King James English when they pray, and others love to repeat God's name repeatedly. Others feel they must say fancy and eloquent words, while some are so afraid to pray that they don't. Then, there is the trouble of feeling like we "have" to pray. We may not say it out loud, but we think that if we don't pray, God will stop loving us. Lastly, some pray, believing God is their genie, and constantly seek after selfish things. While there is nothing wrong with praying for the things we want, if our desires do not match God's desires, we cannot expect God to give us everything we ask for. The answer to all of this is relationship. Our relationship with Heavenly Father gives a balance between our desire for what we want with our passion for what God wants. Here in the U.S., we don't really 'do' fasting. Giving something up (usually food) to spend more time with God is not what we like, because it means making ourselves uncomfortable. The struggle they had was that, like charity and prayer, they often fasted to get recognition and praise from people. In God's Kingdom, however, fasting is not done to make ourselves look good but to connect with our Heavenly Father. In the Christian faith, we spend a lot of time praying. There are many opportunities in our world to give to those in need. We have many charities, foundations, grants, fellowships, and programs where people can donate their time, talents, and treasure to help others. The problem we often run into is that our charity can become toxic; it can slowly change our hearts and move our intentions away from doing good to help others to do charity to make ourselves look better. In God's Kingdom, however, charity is not done to make ourselves look good but as an overflow from a heart that God has changed. Our culture loves stories involving good vs. evil; superheroes who defeat the villains, police officers who catch the criminal, and the victim who gets revenge on their enemy. There is something emotionally satisfying about seeing a bad guy get their punishment for what they have done. In real life, however, we recognize that no amount of punishment can replace the things that enemies take from us. The only way we can experience true restoration is through the power of God in our lives. This is why Jesus tells us to live a life that seems crazy in the eyes of the world. His Kingdom culture even has a way for us to make peace with our enemies, if we are willing to trust His process. Many of us know what it means to make a promise, as well as how it feels to break one. To get around breaking promises, many times we will look for loopholes or ways out (such as "crossing our fingers'). The same thing was going on in Israel during Jesus' earthly ministry, especially among the religious elite. They had found ways to work around the laws within the Law of Moses to get out of their vows and oaths by technicalities. Jesus had much to say about how His followers make promises to God and people. The struggle with living in a nation with laws is that we can find loopholes; ways to follow the 'letter' of the law but not the 'heart' of it. The same happened in Israel during Jesus' earthly ministry, especially among the religious elite. The struggle with people is that we hurt each other, and the old saying is true: "hurt people hurt people." In the Church, we can so easily drift from one extreme to another. In some circles, we move towards legalism and say we have to follow all of the commands in the Law of Moses. Others say that we have been set free from the Law of Moses and now subscribe to radical freedom where they can live however they "feel" is right. What did Jesus have to say about this? We have systems in our world that work together to make things happen. We have systems for finance, legal codes, and even regulations for transportation and shipping. In the time of Jesus, the Jewish way of life centered around their religious system. The religious leaders shaped this system to be so burdensome that most people couldn't possibly meet all of its demands. Jesus came to bring a Kingdom that would overturn that system and replace it with one that allowed people to have a right standing with God again. To do this, To do this, He had to show people how His Kingdom would operate and what it meant to be blessed in God's culture. In this first episode, we will look at what Jesus taught to His followers about what Kingdom blessings were and how to fix our focus on Him rather than the systems of this world.
In the Christian life, it can become easy to dismiss our contributions. We feel like since we aren't pastors, evangelists, or Bible scholars that we don't have anything to help others grow in their faith. Because of the western-mentality in our culture, we struggle with authority. We have heard that we are equal for so long and have access to so much information that we have lost our respect for those in authority over us. We believe that since we are all equal in value, we are also equal in station/power. This has sadly bled over into the Christian faith and has led to the rise in popular doctrines that give followers of Jesus equal authority as Jesus. In this episode, we will look at what exactly is the Authority of the Believer, what the Bible teaches about it (in context), and how we can find the balance between being given authority from Christ and still being under Christ's authority.

In life, we face trials and struggles. When they come our way, these trials can cause us to doubt God's goodness and His love for us. More than that, we do not worship a lifeless god made of wood or stone; we worship the One True God who not only cares for us but also weeps at our hurts. We live in a drastically different culture from those of God's Kingdom. While our nation was founded on Christian ethics, we have steadily been distancing ourselves from them in the last 100 years. In the 1920s, we took God out of our schools. In the 1940s and 1950s, we took God out of our government. And, in the 1960s and 1970s, we took God out of our homes. Since then, we have steadily degraded and moved into the belief of moral relativity. While this all can seem hopeless, we know that God is still moving and working in our nation. As long as Jesus tarries, we have an opportunity to bring Kingdom culture. In this episode, we will discuss how followers of Jesus can confront our culture with love and truth.
In life, it seems that temptation is lurking around every corner. But it is in times of struggle that we feel temptation the most. This is when we are most drawn to the dark desires that seek to build up our kingdom rather than God's Kingdom. How then do we face these temptations and resist them? We find the answer to this question in the life of Jesus. In this episode, we will look at how Jesus handled temptation and correctly used the word of God to resist selfish desires and keep a heart that is focused on honoring God.
Sometimes in life, we get the unexpected; the unexpected bill, the unexpected job loss, the unexpected injury, or even the unexpected sickness. It can be really easy to find ourselves overcome with fear in all of these situations. We have fear about the future and what it holds. But when we experience the perfect love of God, we can remember that we may not know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future. In this episode, we will look at how the prophet Elijah had faith in God even in the midst of fear for his life. Join us as we learn that even when we are fearful, God is always faithful.
In poker, a person can pretend they have a better hand than they actually do. This technique is called bluffing. The problem with bluffing is that, eventually, you get called on it. Then you have to show your cards and let everyone see the truth. In life, we can find ourselves bluffing as well; about our leadership, our relationships, and even our walk with God. When the hard moments of life come, they reveal who we really are and call our bluff. These moments force us to admit the truths about ourselves before God and others. In this episode, we look at how the Prophet Samuel called King Saul's bluff before a military battle and expose Saul's true heart towards God. We will then see how God can teach us to trust in Him fully rather than in ourselves.
Valentine's Day brings with it all of these cultural images of flowers, candies, hearts, cupids, and (of course) love. We think of love and we always think of romance, family, and friends. Yet, Jesus taught a great deal on a very different love: love for our enemies. If we want to grow our love for others we have to learn to love as God loves, and that means we need a greater love. In this day and age, it can be easy to get discouraged and disheartened over the state of our world. We live in a culture that is dark and far away from God. Sadly, we are in this state mainly because the Church has not done what it was called to do: be salt and light. Like many young families, we were gifted the famous "What to Expect when You're Expecting" book when my wife went to one of her baby showers. And it came in handy to learn from experts what we should prepare for and not get surprised by. But wouldn't it be nice to have a book about what to do when things happen that we aren't expecting? When things go crazy, we lose jobs, get a bad diagnosis, have financial difficulties, and even face the pain of death, it would be incredibly helpful to have a book that tells us what we can do to make it through these tough times. The good news is that God has done just that by giving us His word (aka the Bible). In this episode, we will take one final look at the Christmas story and see how Mary and Joseph sought God and found a way to handle the unexpected. Hopefully it will be one that we too can apply in our own lives so that we can trust that God's promises never fail.

It can be difficult to trust that God will do all that he says he will, in the midst of years of waiting and wondering. To us, the Christmas story about the birth of Jesus and the coming of the Messiah our regular events that we celebrate each year. But we often forget that the coming of the Messiah was a promise that took over four centuries to happen. During those over 400 years, God‘s people did not receive any word from Him and in that silence, they had to learn to trust. The same is true for you and I. When time passes on slowly and we wait on God to be faithful to keep his promises, we must choose to either doubt His goodness or trust in His faithfulness. One of the best parts of the Christmas story, is where we flip the page from Malachi to Matthew, cross that gap of 400 years, and get to see God‘s promises fulfilled on the pages of history. In this episode, we will look at how God sets things in place so that His promises will come to pass in our lives at just the perfect time and we can learn to worship in these periods of waiting.
As the calendar moves us into December, it may be a surprise to some that it is already the Christmas season. With the busyness of life, struggles over time, money, work, and sickness can easily keep us from feeling like we are in the holiday spirit. We may look to the idea of gifts, twinkling lights, and the joy of family for reasons to feel jolly but ultimately those things won't do the trick. It takes the joy that only God can give to truly find Christmas. In this episode, we will go back to that first Christmas season and see how three unlikely people will come together to celebrate God's goodness. And, hopefully, we will find a way to our own joy in the process.
Life seems to always be incredibly busy and when we get phone calls it is so easy to send them to voicemail. We promise ourselves we will get back to it later but we don't always do a good job with that. In a similar way, we get calls from God during our lives. Whether it is for a season or for a lifetime, God calls on us to partner with Him to bring the Kingdom of Heaven here on Earth in powerful and unique ways. Sadly, we also have the option to send God's calls on our lives to voicemail as well. In this episode, we will look at how we can answer these calls and let God use us in real and mighty ways.
