Jody Fletcher helped lead Navy organizations of up to 45,000 people. His biggest leadership lesson was simple: how you treat people directly affects how they perform.

After nearly 30 years in the U.S. Navy—including service as a corpsman alongside Marine Corps Recon and MARSOC—Jody became a command master chief and senior enlisted advisor to two- and three-star generals.

In this episode of Whiskey & Wisdom, Jody joins Tyler Yaw and Chris Kellum to discuss the leadership principles behind his book, Good Humans Make Great Leaders.

Jody explains why leadership skills must be deliberately developed, what separates a good human from a merely effective performer, and why authority alone will never create a great team. The conversation covers self-awareness, boundaries, relationship-building, difficult personnel decisions, optimism, and the principle of “first do no harm.”

The crew also pours Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 and debates whether aging bourbon at sea actually changes the flavor—or simply creates a better story.

If you lead a team, own a business, serve in the military, or want to become someone others can trust, this conversation is for you.

Subscribe to Whiskey & Wisdom for honest conversations with people building businesses, leading others, and making an impact.

Wilmington muralist Alexia Campbell painted nearly 40 murals in about three years—and she scales her designs onto massive walls without using a projector. In this episode, Alexia reveals the freehand process behind her murals, the Instagram momentum that helped turn art into a business, and how she balances large commercial projects, architectural drafting, motherhood, surfing, and faith.

Tyler Yaw and Chris Kellum sit down with Alexia Campbell of Board Meeting to trace the journey from her first mural at Fu’s barber shop to major Wilmington-area projects at Lakeside Fitness, Hidden Grounds, and beyond. Alexia explains how she moves a design from her iPad to a wall, what she learned from painting brick and floors, which projects challenged her most, and why success means more than getting bigger jobs.

If you have seen one of Alexia’s murals around Wilmington, tell us which one is your favorite in the comments.

The Quiet Shift Ending the Bourbon Boom The script explains how bourbon’s decade-long boom—marked by soaring prices, scarcity, secondary-market flipping, and “hunting” culture fueled by online communities—has begun to shift quietly rather than crash. Once overlooked in the 1980s and 1990s, bourbon surged in the early 2010s as consumers sought authenticity and tradition, turning hard-to-find bottles like Pappy Van Winkle and Weller into status symbols. Distilleries expanded and laid down record barrels assuming demand would keep rising, but aging delays mean today’s market is now facing millions of ready barrels while demand softens. Signs include bottles sitting longer, slower price increases, and declining secondary prices. Changing drinking habits—less collecting, more experiences, and more competition from tequila and ready-to-drink options—point to a reset: improved availability, stabilized prices, and renewed focus on enjoying the whiskey itself.

From Marine Aviator to Podcast Studio Owner: Rich Cardona on Unfilter, Podcasting for Business, and Client Acquisition

Tyler and Chris Kellum host the Whiskey Wisdom Podcast at Unfilter in Wilmington with owner Rich Cardona, a retired Marine helicopter pilot who left Amazon, explored entrepreneurship, and built a podcasting and video business that evolved from remote work into a physical studio designed to make guests “just show up.” Chris shares tasting notes on E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof. Rich discusses enlisting then becoming an officer, early retirement after being grounded from flying due to a seizure, and the challenges of transitioning from military SOPs to civilian leadership. Lent as the Original 40-Day Grit Challenge: Leaving the Arena for the Throne

Tyler opens the Applied Faith Podcast by noting that Ash Wednesday marked the start of Lent and challenges listeners not to treat Lent as a watered-down inconvenience or failed resolution. He frames Lent as a 40-day training ground meant to step out of cultural noise, “kill the flesh,” and create space for the spirit, describing fasting as an intentional rebellion against consumerism and instant gratification (endless scrolling, on-demand entertainment, and convenience).

He introduces the “arena and the throne” concept: the gladiator mindset seeks applause in the cultural arena, while the kingdom mindset lives before God as the only true spectator, aligning with Jesus’ teaching to fast in secret. Tyler encourages listeners to use the next 40 days for quiet, disciplined formation and presents his 40-day Kingdom Challenge, built around eight daily disciplines designed to break reliance on the world and anchor participants to the kingdom. He invites listeners to join him, follow along with the daily podcast episodes, subscribe on YouTube, and participate in the community as they pursue resilience and faith leading up to Easter.

Ever felt like the white picket fence dream is more of a nightmare? Ever thought that ADHD could actually be a superpower? Get ready to rethink those assumptions with our special guests, Ben and Cassidy Royall, on the latest episode of 'The Last Shot'. We take the conventional American dream and flip it on its head, discussing how the white picket fence is not just a chore to maintain, but could symbolize exclusion from community. Plus, we get hilariously philosophical over the struggles of keeping a white shirt clean in a fast-food world.

Shifting gears, we delve into the misunderstood world of ADHD. Ben and Cassidy share personal stories and insights, challenging the negative stigma often associated with this condition. They passionately argue that, far from being a hindrance, ADHD can be a strength when harnessed properly. From school experiences to self-discipline, and overcoming negative comments, this episode is a journey through their unique perspectives. So, tune in to the Whiskey and Wisdom podcast for an enlightening conversation that will make you rethink and appreciate the potential benefits of ADHD.

Imagine stepping into the world of photography with only a pink Polaroid camera in hand and a heart full of passion. This was the humble beginning of Cassidy and Ben Royall, the dynamic duo behind Royall Media. Join us as we unravel their fascinating journey over a glass of Michter's Straight Rye, discussing how Cassidy's teenage obsession with photography flourished into a thriving business. From the moment they first met, to overcoming business challenges, their story serves as an encouraging call to action for anyone teetering on the brink of starting their own venture.

Of course, it’s not just about business. We delve deep into the challenges the Royall's faced that not only propelled their business growth but fortified their marriage as well. We unearth the surprising dominance of women in the photography business and discuss the value of reinvesting in the business, guiding anyone who’s considering starting their own LLC. But it doesn't end there. We also venture into the creative realm, and the key role of consistency and reputation in small business growth.

As we wind down our conversation, we touch on defining success, creating a legacy and how business goals interweave with personal life. For the Royall's, success denotes more than financial gain. It's about radiating a positive impact on their family culture. Delve into their future plans and how their dedication and passion may just inspire their future offspring. So, refill your glass and enjoy some final words of wisdom served neat with another round of whiskey. Just like the Royall's, we hope our conversation leaves you inspired, invigorated and ready to take on the world.

🎙️ Exciting News! 🎉

I am thrilled to announce the release of our latest podcast episode, filled with insightful conversations and valuable takeaways! In this episode, we dive deep into the topic of personal growth and finding fulfillment in both our personal and professional lives. Here are three key takeaways from this thought-provoking discussion:

1️⃣ Focus on what truly brings you joy: One of the guests on our show shared their experience of being overly stressed and consumed by trying different avenues to achieve success. They realized that it's essential to take a step back, calm down, and prioritize enjoying the journey. By finding something you love and providing value to others, success and fulfillment will naturally follow.

2️⃣ Surround yourself with a supportive network: Our conversation touched upon the importance of having a strong support system. We discussed the value of having a best friend who happens to be a liquor rep (yes, you read that right!). They shared how this friendship opened doors to new opportunities and helped them achieve their dreams. Remember, having a team behind you and attracting a supportive community is crucial for personal and professional growth.

3️⃣ Embrace collaboration and teamwork: We delved into the misconception that success can only be achieved through individualism. Our guests emphasized the significance of building a team and working together towards a common goal. History has shown us that great accomplishments are rarely achieved alone. By focusing on the needs of our community and putting ego aside, we can make a more significant impact and find true purpose.

I encourage you to listen to this episode and gain valuable insights that can inspire personal growth and fulfillment in your own life. Don't forget to share your thoughts and takeaways in the comments below. Let's continue the conversation and support each other on our journey towards success and happiness! 🌟

🎙️📣 Exciting news, everyone! 📣🎙️

We just released a brand new episode of the Whiskey and Wisdom podcast, and let me tell you, it's a game-changer! 🎉🥃

In this episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with a special guest who shared some incredible insights about golf, health, and overall well-being. Here are three major takeaways that you definitely don't want to miss:

1️⃣ Take care of your body: Our guest emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to maintain and improve your physical health. As we age, it's crucial to prioritize our bodies and not let "father time" take advantage of us. From metabolic health to overall wellness strategies, there's so much we can do to stay in top shape and feel our best both on and off the golf course.

2️⃣ Pain is not normal: One of the most eye-opening discussions in this episode revolved around the misconception that pain is a natural part of aging. Our guest, a professional and doctor, debunked this myth and highlighted that while pain may be common, it is not normal. We should never settle for just "dealing with it" or accepting pain as an inevitable consequence of getting older. There are solutions and treatments available that can help us live pain-free lives.

3️⃣ Expert advice for golfers: For all the avid golfers out there, this episode is a goldmine of tips and tricks to enhance your game. Our guest, who has a passion for working with golfers, shared valuable insights and strategies to help you reach new heights in your golfing journey. Whether you're a professional or just enjoy the occasional round of golf, these tips will undoubtedly take your game to the next level.
