Biblical Womanhood vs. Biblical Manhood

Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist. And today we’re going to talk about Bible translations because while the aim of all Bibles is to give us the word of God, the process of translation leaves us with a variety to choose from.
As a feminist, Bible translations is an interesting topic, because the topic of gender comes up frequently among translators.
And that leaves us with the question of what’s the best Bible translation?
There are a lot of factors and this does get confusing. So that’s what we’re here to discuss.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard someone boast about how early they get up and do all the things before the sun rises.
Because of my kids, I’m in a season of my life where that’s actually happening every day.
But I have no intention of rising quite so early when life changes.
Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist. And as someone whose personal time always feels like it belongs to someone else, I’m a bit sensitive about this topic.
I know what it feels like when it seems everyone else wants a piece of you.
You might respond by trying to do all the things in order to gain someone’s approval or you might want to rebel against all the rules.
I’ve done both.
But let’s dig deeper into this topic, because it is important.
Let’s take away all the rules and the shrouds or musts and see why early morning devotions might be right rather than just assume that it is.
God doesn’t only want our obedience - he invites all that we are - mind, body, and spirit - to seek him.

How should you read the Bible? And this is really more about your attitude when you go to read it.
Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist. And as someone who feels committed to allowing people to worship God of their own volition, I have a hard time talking about this topic.
And that’s because how you approach God, how you approach Bible reading can change based on your level of maturity, faith, and experience.
God isn’t about one-size-fits-most solutions.
He has unique relationships with every single person - including you.

What should we read in the Bible?
The Bible isn’t just a book, it’s a library. And that means it’s not as easy as picking up a book like this David Weber book here.
By the way, I love David Weber's books. And when I sit down to read them, there’s no question about where to start.

Why is Bible reading so important?
That’s the question we’re here to discuss.
Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist talking about a Christianity that’s free from patriarchy!
I might surprise you with what I’m going to say here. But you don’t need to read your Bible to be a Christian. That’s right. You heard it here. But before you switch this off or run to your pastor to tell on me, let me explain.
The reason I believe you don’t need to read your Bible to be a Christian is that people have been following Jesus for 2000 years.
And what do you think the chances are that everyone who lived as a Christian read the Bible?
Pretty low, right?
So you don’t need to read your Bible, but it is beneficial.
And I have five reasons we should read our Bibles regularly. Join me in this episode!

Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist. And I have a confession to make. I love the Bible.
This is the first in a series where we talk about how to read the Bible.

Is the Bible still relevant today?

Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist. And I believe the Bible still matters today.
It still applies to the situations and circumstances we face just as it has in every century and decade before us.
In this series, we’re exploring how to read the Bible because if it contains as much wisdom as many believe, then learning how to extract that and implement it in our lives will make a massive difference in how we live.

Why is the Bible so confusing?
That’s the question we’re here to discuss.
Kate here, and I’m the Reluctant Christian Feminist talking about a God that loves works with men and women equally. A totally radical concept, right?
I was raised with the Bible, so there’s this sense of me that wonders how anyone can have trouble reading the Bible.
But if I’m honest, there are times when I read something and just go right past it. It didn’t make sense and so I didn’t pay attention.
For example, here’s a passage from Jeremiah in the King James version, “Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. Then said the Lord unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.”

I can’t answer this with a simple yes or no without risking a misunderstanding.
And it’s probably no surprise that I believe the Bible offers unparalleled freedom. However, I also understand that from a different perspective, some may view it as repressive, oppressive, or even suppressive.
In this series, we’re exploring how to read the Bible because if it is a source of freedom, then it is worth digging into.

We've been promised difficult times. But not without a promise of God's grace and strength. In this episode let's acknowledge the hardship and the emotions that come as a result of them. There's a greater purpose for everything we endure.
"And everything I’ve taught you is so that the peace which is in me will be in you and will give you great confidence as you rest in me. For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world!”
John 16:33 TPT
In this episode, we'll discuss the difficulties that can come up when we debate doctrinal points with other Christians. This is certainly a perspective that's important as a Christian who is also a feminist. There's a lot of animosity on both sides of the "role of women" debate and it takes a lot of humility to walk in grace.
In this episode, we discuss the need to recognize that all people are on a journey, including us. And that can help us extend grace when people embrace different viewpoints.
In this episode, we explore the concept of judging others. Is there a better way to show discernment that doesn't widen the gap between us and them?
Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
Matthew 7:1-2 NLT
In this episode, I want to challenge us to take notice of people who remain invisible, recognizing that they are humans created in the image of God.
"Your friends might be holding you back!"
Thoughts like that can cause us to curate our friendships more carefully. But isn't this a selfish way of editing our lives - to measure the worth of our friends?
In this episode, I share some reflections on how we can learn to look at friends in a different way. After all, each person in an image bearer and worthy of our love.
The world is full of divisive issues like abortion, vaccines, face coverings, equality, and so many more!! This divisiveness splits family and friends resulting in hurt, isolation, and rejection.
In a world that's full of "us vs. them" mentality, are you willing to close the gap?
Can you find common ground with God's image-bearer on the other side of any issue?
One of the hardest things in my journey toward experiencing greater freedom in Jesus is seeing the number of women who harshly judge other women. I'll share some of my reflections on why this happens and what we can do in this episode.
In this episode, let’s dive into possibly the most confusing scriptural passage in regards to the role of women. What does Paul mean about coverings? Are women as "glorious" as men?
This passage deserves a closer look, as it's words have been used to silence women in the church. In preparing for this episode, I rummaged through a lot of resources. One in particular that I recommend is Peppiat's book, Unveiling Paul's Women which specifically address this passage.
In this episode, let’s dive into one of the most hotly contested scripture in regards to the role of women. In this passage, Paul seems to direct a damaging blow to women. He says that he won’t put up with a woman teaching and exercising authority over a man. At first glance this reads as though Paul holds a diminished view of women. But is this the same man who had a woman carry his important letter to Rome? Is it the same man who warmly acknowledged and greeted women ministers in the early church?
This passage deserves a closer look, especially with the stake of all women hanging in the balance.
In this episode, let's discuss the household codes that seem to support a patriarchal system of husbands rule and wives submit.
What if Paul were telling us something radically different?
What if our own cultural bias and our lack of context made it difficult to read what Paul intended?
Let's look at this with an openness of spirit and with a fresh set of eyes.
In this episode we look at Genesis 3:16 and talk about what was cursed and how it affects both men and women.
According to tradition, God created the world in six days. But the creation of women is special and separate. In this episode we look at Genesis 2:18 and talk about why God created women.
This episode wraps up the series of unidentified women who interacted with Jesus. Here we discuss the Canaanite woman and what her interaction can mean for all of us who might feel as though we're fighting over scraps that fall from the table.
In this episode, we introduce a woman whose often overlooked. She didn't do anything to receive the miracle of Jesus' blessing. Yet, she offers hope and insight into those of us, who at one time or another were so consumed with our sorrow that we didn't hear or see Jesus coming for us.
In this episode we see how Jesus does the impossible. He raises a dead girl to life again. This episode is for anyone who is believing God for an impossible dream - or who is mourning because it feels like what you set out to accomplish has died.
Jesus is the faithful friend you can depend on.
In this story, Jesus demonstrates his attention to a woman who might have gone unnoticed. We also explore the difference between faith in faith and faith in Jesus.
In this story, Jesus demonstrates his love and acceptance of a woman who represents every person who has experienced rejection.
What can we learn from the sinful woman who washed Jesus' feet with perfume and tears? What can we learn from Simon the Pharisee who witnessed it?
We can learn a lot about our need to recognize the greatness of the transformation he offers.
What can we learn from the woman who was caught in the act of adultery? It turns out we can learn a lot about Jesus and about the hope we have for a life that's free of the tyranny of sin.
In this episode, we'll recall the story of the poor widow who gave all she had. But this story has a twist because it's so much more than merely a story about sacrificial giving.
Why does our identity matter so much? How do we discover it?
In this episode, we'll discover how our perception of our identity impacts us and the world.
Coming from conservative Christian roots, my shift to feminism didn't happen quickly. This was a journey that involved a lot of heartbreaking experiences, honest prayer, and diligent Bible study. In this episode, I explain the truths that caused me to recognize that I had become a reluctant Christian feminist.
