He has taught/lectured at several colleges nationally and internationally. He is a past president of the Association of Black Psychologists, former head of the sociology and psychology at Grambling State University, as well as the national program director of Black Marriage Day, president of Black Mental Health Matters, and vice president of The World Mental Health Coalition.

In this episode we are joined by Brandon King. Brandon is an instructor and facilitator for programming at the Gwinnett County Public Library's Learning Labs. He has been in this position for four years, primarily leading sessions on audio/video recording, basic sewing, photography, and a variety of other topics. As a GCPL employee, he is dedicated to helping patrons discover the resources available to them for free through the Library and spark their autonomy as they are developing new skills in life.

He is sharing some of the free resources that are available in our county library, such as: workshops, resume writing, computer classes, wellness seminars, podcasting and media spaces, assistance with applying for social resources such as housing, food stamps and other benefits, online tutoring, sewing classes, language classes and many others.

In this episode we sit down with David N. Mitchell, President and CEO of The Unity Production Group, LLC. and Dir. of Drama Ministry for the AME Church. Mitchell is Chicago native and a graduate of Grambling State University. He holds a B.A. in Theatre and Business and is an award winning playwright, actor and director.

Mitchell combined his love for theatre and ministry to found "The Tipping Point Project in Asheville, NC to meet the needs of their youth population. The program uses theatre to address the modern day challenges of drugs, crime, violence, and negative behaviors.

Mitchell and his program have received national recognition by the National League of Cities for its creative effectiveness in decreasing crime in communities and increasing academic performance for youth participants.

She speaks during public comment at school board meetings regularly, holds educational events for students at a county level, and shares the importance of keeping kids safe around firearms.

Laura is currently the President and Chief Operations Officer of Content Monsta, a marketing business she started with her husband. She recently served as the Education Chair of the Cobb County Commission District 2 Community Cabinet. Currently, she focuses on her two children thriving in the school environment while supporting their extra-curricular activities.

Nikki Reeves and Leroy Lamar cofounded Comprehensive Community Services. Nikki serves as both the Director of Operations and volunteer coordinator. She has extensive experience working with vulnerable populations, including volunteering with anti-trafficking organizations for two years before settling in at Serenity’s Steps, the predecessor to CCS.

Leroy has significant experience in service provision and relationship building, particularly within the homelessness and nonprofit sector. He has worked with youth at Young Life, providing him with additional experience working with this population. Together, Leroy and Nikki bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their roles, making them valuable assets to the organization

We talk with Georgia State legislators, Sen Tonya Anderson (Senate District 43), Representatives Doreen Carter (House Dist 93) and Segun Adeyina ( House Dist 110) about the current legislative session.

Mrs. Baldwin began her career in Ellaville, Georgia, as a teacher at a segregated high school. She went on to Columbus ,Ga and taught for ten years at Hardaway High School. Baldwin then moved to Gwinnett County to teach at Central Gwinnett High School, becoming the sole black teacher, and eventually the school's principal.

From there, Baldwin was recruited to Buford City Schools as a principal. After four years in Buford, the board hired her to became the school superintendent. They did not realize it at the time, but Mrs. Baldwin and the board made history. She became the first black school superintendent in the state of Georgia.

After retiring from Buford City Schools, she was instrumental in forming the Hopewell Christian Academy and serving on the board of North Metro Academy of Performing Art.

In 2016, she had the honor of having Baldwin Elementary named after her. And 2020, the Gwinnett Elections office was named the Beauty P Baldwin Building.

Robin Edwards is the Sr. Program Manager with the National Black MBA Association. In her role, is responsible for developing and implementing programs to help entrepreneurs elevate their businesses to the next level.

She joins us to talk about the NBMBA's Collegiate Innovation Challenge. It is a 5-week virtual program for college students with entrepreneurial visions. The challenge equips students to take their plans and turn them into reality by connecting the students with innovative tools and techniques to launch their businesses.At the end of the program the students will have the opportunity to receive up to a $2,500 grant and apply to compete in a pitch competition and win up to $10,000.
Eligibility Guidelines:
-Must be a current college student seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree
-Business idea or concept must be in the early stages of development
-The idea or concept must be the original work of the individual or team
-Idea does not contain any libelous material, does not invade or violate any right of privacy, personally or proprietary right, or other common law or statutory right
-Be a U.S. resident, and over the age of 18
-Have a founder who is Black (of African descent), who maintains an ‘at least equal stake’ in the startup (if the startup has three owners, at least 33% of its ownership must be Black)
-Must complete the virtual program to be eligible to receive grant and compete in the pitch challenge

The students discuss how they are helping to break down the stigma of mental health and the self-care practices they are sharing with their peers.

In this conversation, we sit down with Karen Ramsey of the Gwinnett Housing Corporation. Karen joined the GHC team in August 2022 as the Housing Initiatives Director. As the Housing Initiatives Director, Karen is responsible for the planning, supervision and operation of various programs and initiatives. She is also responsible for seeking grant funding opportunities for GHC and completing the grant application process. Karen brings to GHC 15 years of affordable housing experience as well as certifications in Housing Choice Voucher Program Management, Fair Housing and Reasonable Accommodations Specialist, HCPV Program Specialist, and Low-Income Tax Credit Specialist. Recently, U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, in a 516-page order, ordered the state of Georgia to go back to the drawing board and redraw the state's legislative boundaries. Specifically, Jones directed the state to draw two new Black-majority districts in Georgia. Georgia’s Republican majority General Assembly and governor were directed to take action before Dec. 8, saying he wouldn’t permit 2024 elections to go forward under the current maps.

On October 26, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called for a special session of the Georgia General Assembly to convene after the judge ruled the state's congressional, state Senate and state House districts were drawn in a racially discriminatory manner. On Wednesday, November 29th, the special session convened for seven days to redraw the boundaries. Rep. Karen and Cat sit down with Vance Williams to talk about personal safety during the holiday season and beyond. Vance is a decorated Police Officer . Since January 2023 he serves as an Investigator for the Gwinnett County District Attorney since January 2023, as a Criminal Investigator. Vance has been a Georgia Law Enforcement Officer for over 30 years.

In 1992, Vance Williams began his law enforcement career as a Corrections Officer with the City of Atlanta. He served as an Investigator, Inspector, and as a Sergeant.

In 2004, Williams left the Department of Corrections and served the citizens of Hapeville as a uniformed patrol officer with the City of Hapeville (Metro Atlanta) Georgia. Williams served as a SWAT Team Member and Hostage Negotiator, where he participated in numerous SWAT callouts and successfully negotiated surrenders on several critical barricade gunman situations. In 2008, Williams was promoted to Detective and investigated crimes ranging from petty larceny to murder. Williams also served as the police department’s Internal Affairs Investigator and Public Information Officer.

In 2010, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office recruited Williams as an Investigator in the Major Case/Homicide Unit. In 2011, Williams was promoted to Director of Investigations for the Major Case Unit where he supervised senior investigators, resulting in a ninety-eight percent conviction rates for all homicide trials in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit during his supervision.

In July 2014, Williams served the City of Atlanta for a second time when he returned to the Atlanta Department of Corrections as a Major over the Office of Professional Standards.

Williams made his way to Gwinnett County in May 2021, as a Criminal Investigator in the Solicitor General’s Office. There he served as the department’s General POST Instructor, Firearms Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. In the Solicitor’s Office, Williams was assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit, in which he investigated cases involving intimate partner violence.

In his current role, Williams is assigned to the Special Victims Unit in which he investigates sexual crimes including rape, child molestation, sex trafficking, sexual assault, and other felonies. In this Office, he also serves as one of the Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and General POST Instructors.

In addition to his career in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, Williams is also a veteran of the United States Army. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1987 and served as a Military Policeman in Mannheim, West Germany until June 1990.

Abiodun is a native Brooklynite who represents for the Kru Tribe of Native Liberians. She enjoys it when her son yells, "Free All Black People" when they pass the Atlanta City Jail and her babygirl says "Power to the People"!

Tamika Ray-Head is the Founder and Director of PinkSTEM Inc. Her current position is the STEM Director and Robotics Coach of surrounding groups in Atlanta Metro Area. She began her journey for mentoring youth in 1998 for the Boys and Girls Club in Augusta GA. She volunteered there several summers as a tutor and mentor. Upon graduating high school in Augusta Georgia, Tamika joined the US Air Force following her dads footsteps. During her tenure she was an Air Traffic Controller Supervisor and trainer (5 years), she then held a position as a Cardiopulmonary Laboratory Supervisor (Respiratory Therapy Concentration) 3 years. Tamika has obtained a degree in both fields. She volunteered as a Big Brother, Big Sister also while in the military.” After separation, she volunteered once more at two BGCA. Tamika Ray’s next journey began as an educator. She has taught Algebra, Physical Science, Honors Chemistry, Earth Science and her favorite Anatomy and Physiology. She is currently teaching and operating this organization simultaneously.

In this episode of Conversations with Karen and Cat, we sit down with Curtis Clemons, Deputy Chief of Investigators for the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s office. Chief Clemons discusses the rise in fentanyl abuse and deaths in the metro Atlanta area and how we all can get the message out about the dangers of this drug.Chief Clemons has extensive law enforcement background. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a former Gwinnett County deputy sheriff and Gwinnett County Policeman. As a GCP, he worked in the Special Victims Unit, Burglary, and Homicides. He was also the first person of color appointed to the rank of Chief of Staff and Assistant Chief in the history of the Gwinnett County Police Department. He retired after thirty (30) years of service. Subsequently, he was an investigator and community outreach liaison with the Gwinnett Solicitor General’s office and ran for Sheriff of Gwinnett County in the 2020 elections.Chief Clemons holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Professional Business Leadership from Shorter University. Chief Clemons is a graduate of Gwinnett County’s L.E.A.D. program (Leadership, Education, and Development), and the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Leadership program. Chief Clemons serves as a mentor through the Gwinnett County Schools G.I.V.E. program and as the Vice President of the L.E.A.A.D.S. (Law Enforcement Agencies Assisting in the Development of Students) program in Snellville, which helps to provide food for families, rent utility assistance, and mentorship for Gwinnett’s youth. Chief Clemons has been the recipient of the Most Distinguished Alumni Award from Shorter University for his work in the community, the Diversity Achievement Award, from Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Community Service Forum Award. Chief Clemons currently serves on several community impact boards, including the Gwinnett-NAACP and the Gwinnett Remembrance Alliance in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative.

In episode 37 of Conversations with Karen and Cat we speak with Zeus Luby. Zeus is the Programming Director for RED (Rehabilitation Enables Dreams) Inc. His role is to establish a foundational bond with each program participant which facilitates their trust in RED’s intent and the program’s curriculum. That trust is critically important and rooted in relatability. Mr.Luby cultivates that relatability by sharing his harrowing story of false accusations, living as a convicted felon, police brutality, near death encounters, and facing 20 years in prison. He also shares his journey of evolution and growth, detailing how his daughter saved him from his dismal past and fueled him to become the man he is today.

RED creates a classroom atmosphere inside the courtroom and treats program participants as students rather than criminals. RED’s curriculum is structured to develop a student’s social, civic, and financial literacy through task-oriented learning, engaging workshops, and interactive educational modules. Students are paired with appropriate mentors based on our individual-needs intake assessment. Mentors support students in their personal development and guide them in the completion of program requirements.

Carol Love is the Executive Director of Family Promise of Gwinnett. For the previous five years she was an Associate at Wilbanks Partners, where she focused on marketing, events, and client relationship management. Carol was the founding Director of Family Promise of Gwinnett’s Salt Light Center and is excited to be back and working with the churches, donors, and volunteers.Carol’s business career began with Ernst & Young as an Analyst in the Fraud & Investigative Disputes Services Group, and she subsequently became a Marketing Associate in the firm’s Financial Services Advisory Group. Carol earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.

Carol’s pride and joy are her husband Ben and her son Tristan. She is grateful that the Lord has led her back to Family Promise and is enjoying the adventure.

Family Promise of Gwinnett County is a community based response that brings existing local resources together to help homeless children and their families regain their housing and their independence, while maintaining their dignity. They mobilize congregations of faith, community volunteers, and social service agencies. Through intensive case management and counseling, they address the underlying causes of homelessness. Together with the community, they are ending homelessness – one family at a time.

The organization offers a program that provides shelter to children and their families experiencing homelessness. The goals for families to Make Money, Save Money and Find Housing. Families are able to stay overnight at the Promise Haven facility and receive hospitality from the congregation and community volunteers. Families who meet eligibility requirements stay at Promise Haven in the evenings and use the Day Center during the day as needed. The day Center provides families with access to a mailing address, counseling services, case management and a place to go when Promise Haven is closed during the day.

Co-Founders, Melissa Marrero and Tannia Zarate started Hispanics United Alliance for the Missing after learning about the disappearances of three hispanic young persons. The women got involved to lead their voices advocating on behalf of families and the community. Katherine E. Juhan-Arnold started Baby Katie’s Pharm & Kitchen in April 2014 to bring communities together through growing food. She realized a need in her community for fresh food. Many of the families in her neighborhood didn’t have time to make it to the nearest grocery store, which at the time was 20 minutes away, over a 30 minute trip minimum. So she started growing food in her backyard and in neighbors’ yards. In 2017, Baby Katie’s Pharm & Kitchen became an official nonprofit 501(c)3 and she’s been on a mission to heal people through food ever since.

Brenda Lopez Romero is Senior Assistant District Attorney for the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit leading the Justice and Community Initiative. Brenda was the first American Latina elected to the Georgia General Assembly where she sat on the Education, Retirement, and State Planning and Community Affairs committees. She is the Chairwoman for the Gwinnett County Democratic Party and is a raising star in Georgia politics.

She has worked over 20 years in the legal and political advocacy of immigrants and low-income communities. Formerly, she was a principal attorney handling removal defense and immigration and nationality matters.

Brenda holds a law degree from Syracuse University with a National Security and Counterterrorism certificate and a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University in Political Science and Sociology. Brenda has extensive involvement in community organizing and affiliations with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, and Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She is also a member of Leadership Georgia, Leadership Atlanta, Leadership Gwinnett, International Women’s Forum, U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, and Truman National Security Project. Brenda is on the board of directors for the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials and leads its federal political action committee. Among her lengthy volunteerism, she is most proud of her work as a former G.E.D. instructor with the Marist School Adult Education Program.

We sat down with Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor. Sheriff Taylor has the distinction of being Gwinnett County’s first elected Black Sheriff. Taylor began his law enforcement career in 1983 with the Gwinnett County Police Department. His 28-year public service background includes assignments in many areas such as undercover investigations, special investigations, the Gwinnett County Drug Task Force, and the FBI Drug Task Force. His educational background and professional development include a Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree from Mercer University, a Master of Public Administration Degree from Columbus State University, designation as a Certified General Post Instructor, and certification in Intermediate, Advanced, Supervision, and Management. Additionally, he has considerable training in drug unit command and certified crisis intervention trainer. After winning the election in 2020 and taking office in 2021, Sheriff Taylor has prioritized building public trust, gang and human trafficking initiatives, mental health initiatives, community engagement, and training. He resides in Lawrenceville and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, volunteering, and sports.

Episode 25: After losing six family members in a short period of time and five children to the penal system, Melvennia Clark wanted to bring light and healing to others. Out of her pain, she founded the Shaquille Clark Foundation of Atlanta. Through the foundation, Melvinna become a community partner with hotel owners. She created an educational campaign to help the owners understand how to identify sex trafficking, assist young women to safely escape from the hotels and assists them with employment resources. The foundation has also created a firearm safety curriculum which educates parents and children about gun safety.

Ms. Clark also explains how she was able to forgive her son’s murderer, advocate for his release at a parole hearing and even assist him with employment opportunities.

On October 16th, Karen and Cat hosted "Your Voices Matter Youth Summit. This was the first in a series of community engagement events that the podcasters intend to host. The purpose of the summit was to hear and learn from the students of Shiloh and South Gwinnett High Schools. Students discuss the recent incidents of violence in their schools and what actions they would like administration to take. Students also had the opportunity to hear from community advocates working in mental health, conflict resolution and school disciplinary reform and learn strategies that could be implemented on the school level.

It is important to note, the Youth Summit was held prior to the more recent escalated events at other Gwinnett high schools which resulted in a stabbing at one school and a student loosing their life in an off campus shooting. This is a call to action.

We met Leonard Dungee, Founder and Co-CEO of Hope Hustlers, Inc. at the Black Push, Gun Violence Summit. We were so moved by his story that we had to have him on to share his life work. In this episode Leonard opens up about going from being a stockbroker to convicted drug dealer. He spent time in federal and state prison and now works with young people offering violence prevention initiatives and re-entry programs for convicted felons.

Dungee and his team also offer GED programs, mentors, life skills, anger management and financial literacy programs.

Karen and Cat had the pleasure to speak with Dr. Calvin Ellison, Author and CEO/Founder of Success Dynamics, Inc. Dr. Ellison stopped by to tell us about the different programs that Success Dynamics, Inc is involved in. We were particularly interested in their partnership with the office of the Gwinnett County District Attorney creating the RIZER Generation Rites of Passage Program. The RIZER program is a twelve (12) week modular training program aimed at youth ages 11 to 17.
