Today’s episode features a recording of ASIG’s November Lunch and Learn session on Aging Veterans. Our guests are Ed Ratner, MD and Catherine Kotz, PhD from the Minneapolis VA. Dr. Ratner is a physician specializing in geriatrics and palliative care and has been faculty in the University of Minnesota Medical School for over 20 years. He is also a member of the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation and the associate director for education and evaluation at the Minneapolis VA Geriatric Center. Today’s episode features Matthew Bower, MS, LGC, a genetic counselor at University of Minnesota Health. He works with people who have inherited neurologic diseases and meets with patients to help them understand how genetic conditions impact them and their family members. He describes the way that at home genetic testing, especially those that focus on health information, have impacted his profession. We are excited to share today’s episode on financial fraud and exploitation of older adults featuring Dr. Marti DeLiema. Dr. DeLiema is a Research Assistant Professor at the School of Social Work within the University of Minnesota, College of Education and Human Development. She received her PhD from the University of Southern California, Davis School of Gerontology. In this episode, she shares information on what kinds of factors lead to financial scams targeting older adults, and various innovative ideas on how to prevent fraud and exploitation for both older adults and the general population.

Today’s episode features Sarah Blonigan and Rachel Von Ruden from the Juniper Network, a program within Trellis. Sarah is the Juniper Network Director, she received her BA and MPH from the University of Minnesota, and her JD from William Mitchell College of Law. Rachel is the Juniper Provider Relationship Manager as well as a licensed social worker, and received her degree in social work from St. Catherine University. This episode focuses on the work Juniper does to promote health for older adults, with both in person and virtual evidence-based classes.

The conversation includes discussion of some of the definitions and basic information about what dementia is, how it can be prevented, the various challenges of treating dementia, some of the controversy around the release of Aduhelm, as well as what may be on the horizon for preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.
Today, we are pleased to have Dr. Joseph Gaugler on our podcast. Dr. Gaugler serves multiple distinguished positions in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota among others. He is a professor and the Robert L. Kane Endowed Chair in Long-Term Care and Aging, the Director of Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation and Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Caregiving. Dr. Gaugler has his entire career dedicated to aging with a focus on Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and dementia care. Dr. Gaugler talks about what has led him to work on dementia care, the terms Alzheimer vs dementia, the current status of the care received by people with dementia, the use of antipsychotics on them, how to make an informed decision on nursing facilities, the mental health issue, and the exciting future of dementia treatment and care.

In November, we will be talking about dementia. To start off, we are joined by two guests both working in the areas of dementia and transportation at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Colleen Peterson is a postdoctoral research associate with a focus on aging, dementia care, and roadway safety. Dr. Robyn Birkeland works as a study counselor providing support to individuals offering care to people with dementia. Drs. Peterson and Birkeland discussed research results and work experiences on caring for people with dementia and their safety in regards to various means of transportation, including driving and ground and air public transportations, and the ongoing research study "CarFreeMe".
We are following up with the second episode with Teresa Schicker today with more information on the 2021 Geriatric Case Competition. In this episode, Teresa talks about important deadlines, eligibility, credit earning, and feedback/guidance in the competition along with FAQs.

Voices of Aging returns for the new semester! This week, we are collaborating with Minnesota Northstar Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) to present the 2021 Geriatric Case Competition. Terasa Schicker, Research Program Manager of GWEP, joins us today and again on Sep 10 to talk about the Competition. In this first episode, Teresa introduces the history of the competition and shares information on prizes, judges and coaches, and an example case.
