Welcome to the At The Eyepiece Show! We have MOVED TO SPREAKER.COM. Please look us up there or go directly to our blog, attheeyepiece.org
This is an astronomy based podcast that is devoted to discussing astronomical equipment, visual and electronically assisted observing, stargazing tips, observing reports and equipment reviews. We don't focus on the science of astronomy, there are plenty of shows out there to do that. The focus of At The Eyepiece Show are the backyard stargazers that enjoy taking their telescopes out under the stars, and those individuals wishing to join our ranks. After all, what matters to stargazers is what’s At The Eyepiece.
BlogTalkRadio is a great platform, but it really didn't fit my needs or my budget. I've moved to Spreaker.com! Come and visit the NEW home of the At The Eyepiece Show.

Professor Billy Hix is the Associate Professor of Education at Motlow State Community College and a Teacher Liaison for the Space Foundation. Billy frequently visits local schools to perform outreach and to encourage STEM education in general, with a focus on science and astronomy, and to assist teachers to engage their students in science. Yes, the man gets around! Billy has a passion for education and astronomy, and is an absolute pleasure to listen to as he shares his knowledge about the universe through the numerous talks and star parties he coordinates every year for the Space Foundation.
Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons are a select group of educators who share a passion for space and were selected for the program for their integration of space themes into the classroom. This will be a wonderful discussion, and one to encourage backyard stargazers to get involved in STEM programs and astronomy outreach.
Getting back to doing some LIVE episodes. Tonight we are going to be covering my observing report for the month of October, of course we will be discussing new products, and wrapping up this episode with recommended objects for the month of November.
All this and MORE, on this episode of At The Eyepiece.

As THOUSANDS of people across the WORLD take part in the WorldWide Solstice Festival, we'll be sharing and discussing just a few of the FANTASTIC images and news of the events here on this episode of At The Eyepiece. We may also have founders of the WorldWide Solstice Festival, Pamela Shivak and John W ONeal II call in as well and share how their individual outreach events are going LIVE on the air!
Have a Solstice Festival, or post solar or solstice related photos! It's that easy!
Join the SOLARACTIVITY Facebook group for more worldwide events and post up your images! https://www.facebook.com/groups/solaractivity/
Our goal to share our love of all things solar with as many people as possible, to extend our reach, to cross cultural and ethnic lines, to share with the masses. Art, music, good food and good company will bring many more people to us and our telescopes, than an ad in a local paper advertising an astronomy outreach program.
The festival will encompass BOTH solstice dates. In June, northern hemisphere participants can do outside venues while Southern Hemisphere participants can schedule indoor activities, if weather warrants that. On the December date, we northerners can host indoor or virtual events and presentations while, our southern hemisphere participants can host their WORLDWIDE SOLSTICE FESTIVAL during their local summertime.
If there is no local festival in your area, clubs and individuals can partner with Metroparks, civic groups and/or business interests to start their own festival. You can invite musicians, bands, artists, crafts people, food vendors, solar power representatives, etc. Let your imagination be your guide! You can partner with Metroparks, Museums, libraries, your local NASA office, etc, etc
We have the joy of bringing to you Mike Phillips today to discuss planetary imaging techniques. Mike has been an amateur astronomer for many years, and is quite accomplished for his planetary imaging and even his deep-sky work. In addition to imaging, he was instrumental in launching the Google+ Hangout series called Virtual Star Parties with Fraser Cain (Universe Today Editor) a few years back. You can see Mike, and the Newtonian telescope he BUILT here on the official video that Google used to promote their Hangouts feature for Google+. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agrdjd0nyFo
So get your pencils and notebooks ready gang to learn some great stuff on this special episode of At The Eyepiece!

Jupiter Events part 2 (Times for Central Daylight Savings Time)
Jupiter reached opposition February 6th, so that means its prime time for viewing and imaging this fascinating gas-giant. Tonight I cover all the interesting events visible on Jupiter for the first half of March 2015. These will include Great Red Spot Transits as well as Galilean Moon Transits. All times are in central time zone, which is easier for beginners to understand and adjust for their own locality than giving these times in Universal Time in my opinion, and for seasoned observers, well you can figure that out as well.
So get out and observe Jupiter my fellow backyard stargazers!
This one has been in the works for awhile, but we are finally ready to air it live! This topic comes to us from a vote via the Facebook group Telescope Addicts. This Facebook group is HUGE, with over 15,000 members, and we certainly want to thank Ahmed Jaber and all the wonderful people on Telescope Addicts for voting on a topic for this specific episode.
We are going to be joined by Craig and Tammy Temple, a dynamic duo in the world of astrophotography, having been published numerous times in Astronomy Magazine, Amateur Astronomy Magazine and others. In addition to being avid astrophotographers, they have also been doing a number of equipment reviews lately as well, having been published in Astronomy Magazine and Astronomy Technology Today.
Both Craig and Tammy will be on the air with us to discuss the importance of accurate image scale in astrophotography, and how you can ensure you get the best results with your camera and equipment combinations. Prepared to learn a lot folks from these expert astrophotographers!

The Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project (CBSAP) is the worlds LARGEST astronomy outreach 501(c)3 nonprofit that is dedicated to promoting science literacy by sharing the fascinating science of our Sun. This organization brings observatory quality, narrowband solar telescopes and imaging equipment to over 150 schools and events per year. In 2012 they personally reached over 150,000 students and adults in 5 countries. They share, completely free of charge, live views of Sunspots, Solar Flares, Prominences, Filaments and other fiery magnetic phenomena near the surface of our nearest star, safely, and in three different wavelengths of light. Everyone are usually blown away by the incredible views of the Sun through these state of the art telescopes and cameras. Participants receive solar viewing glasses absolutely free at the event too, and in some cases can even bring home their own images of the Sun taken with these instruments!
This organizing is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so in order to keep these public events completely free of charge, they need your help financially. Stephen Ramsden, the director and creator of CBSAP, will be live on air to answer your questions about science, solar astronomy, our Sun, his equipment etc. He is PASSIONATE about solar astronomy folks, and you will be captivated by hearing more about what he does, and his organization does each and every year to promote science, and in particular Solar astronomy to anyone and everyone.
In addition to Stephen, we will be joined by some of his busiest Solar Ambassadors from around the WORLD that will call in and share their own personal stories about sharing our Sun with others.

Although I will unfortunately have to miss NEAF 2013 AGAIN(!) due to personal reasons, that doesn’t mean we can speculate on what astronomical equipment will be the talk of the show. I give you my opinion on that, and a general review of what to expect at NEAF 2013 this year.
I’ve been dreaming of a piece of software that could show off the Sun in Hydrogen-Alpha with a monochrome camera, but in color. Well my dreams came true when I found Dave’s Solar System Recorder. I’ll give you a demo of this product, and showcase some of its performance on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
Global Astronomy Month is a worldwide celebration of astronomy that is coordinated by Astronomers Without Borders. This episode I'll be discussing all of the events for 2013, their specific dates, and how to find local events in your area. For more information on AWB or GAM, please visit http://astronomerswithoutborders.org/global-astronomy-month-2013.html Next, for our equipment showcase, I'll share my initial impressions of the inexpensive Zhumell 8-24mm Zoom Eyepiece. I have owned this eyepiece for a few months now, and although I haven't had a whole lot of opportunities to observe (weather, life, etc), I'll give you my opinion on whether this inexpensive eyepiece is a solid performer or not. All of this and a whole lot more on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
I have to admit, I have fallen in love with my Kindle App for Android. The app has certainly invigerated my reading, and for this episode, I'll share just a few of my latest astronomical readings for this episode. I discussed the Coronado SolarMax II before, as a brief impression. This episode I'll continue that story with a bit more information, and first hand experience with this dedicated Hydrogen-Alpha telescope. Tonights product showcase will be the Meade Series 5000 24mm 2" Ultra-Wide Angle Eyepiece (whew, what a mouthful). All this, and of course new product discussions on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
It's that time of year, for most of us anyway, when we battle the elements of cold and snow to enjoy the night sky. I'll share equipment and techniques that will help you enjoy the crisp, clear nights this winter under the stars. In addition, I'll be talking about some wonderful eyepieces in this months Product Showcase: Olivon Eyepieces. Never heard of them? Don't worry, they are a new comer for astronomical accessories, and I'll share my thoughs on the line-up of eyepieces I was fortunate enough to be asked to evalaute. I'll also give you a review of an Android app for Lunar observers called Lunar Map Lite. All this and plenty of new product release talk, on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
One of the newest class of objects that I have been introduced to are carbon stars, and they are definitely worth sharing to my fellow stargazers. These are stars that exhibit a distinct orange to deep red hue, caused by an abundance of carbon rather than oxygen in their composition, and their variety in our night sky has surprised me. C'mon, how cool is it to view a star that looks deep red! So if these objects have never been in your eyepiece before, here's this months Audio Tour of the Month which should give you a taste for these interesting objects.
Don't forget, email me attheeyepiece@gmail.com if you have the SkySafari app, and I'll forward you the complete SkySafari Observing List so that you can import and follow along, right at the eyepiece of your own telescope.
Enjoy!
REBROADCAST
Brandon Doyle will be our FEATURED GUEST on tonights episode. Don't know who Brandon Doyle is? Well, turn to page 64 in the January edition of Astronomy magazine and read his article on "How to sketch deep-sky objects". This young man, at the age of 16, shares his passion for observing and sketching with us tonight, At The Eyepiece.
ImagingSource has long been a favorite amount amateur astronomers for lunar, solar, and planetary imaging. I'll give you my initial impressions on the camera itself and its control software. Hopefully by the time this show airs, I will also had the opportunity to do some actual imaging with the camera, and I'll share that experience with you all as well. All this and more, on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
I took the plunge head-long into solar observing. I decided to pick up the Coronado SolarMax II, which is a 60mm Hydrogen-Alpha telescope. I'll explain some key points of this instrument, and my initial impressions. We will revisit this scope in the next few episodes as well as we really pick it apart (no not literally) and how it performs visually as well as photographically. At The Eyepeice is all about the visual observers, those backyard stargazers that enjoy taking their telescopes under the stars, and those individuals wishing to join our ranks. We discuss astronomical equipment, stargazing tips, hot topics in the astronomy forums, observing reports, and equipment reviews. After all, what really matters to stargazers is what's At The Eyepiece
InOMN (International Observe the Moon Night) is an annual event coordinated by professional astronomers and organizations world-wide to draw attention to the beauty and awe of our closest neightor, the Moon. This years event is on Saturday, September 22nd. I'm proud to be a part of the Google+ Hangout on Saturday night that will be broadcasting the views LIVE for all to enjoy. This episode will be a recap of these events, and in addition, sharing some views myself (weather permitting) on the Google+ Hangout for the show. What a great time for you to call in and share your outreach efforts for InOMN, we would love to hear from you! For more information on the Virtual Star Party, and my simulcast of the At The Eyepiece Show on Google+ Hangouts, please visit Google+ and sign up (its free!). Add Fraser Cain to your circles to get up to minute notices for the Virtual Star Party events, and of course add me, John Kramer, to your circles for all things related to the At The Eyepiece Show.
This month we focus on Carbon Stars. The North Kansas Astronomical Society (http://www.nckas.org/carbonstars/) has a great page on Carbon Stars, and explains them very well. "Carbon Stars are stars that are extremely red in color. Their outer shell of carbon is very efficient at absorbing other colors. These stars are usually giant variable stars that would dwarf almost any other star in the sky. They really jump out at you and are a blast to hunt down. You will know it when you get one, the red color is very striking indeed! Some Carbon Stars exhibit a strange color change in relation to aperture. Some are redder in smaller apertures, some are redder in large apertures. Then some don't change perceptively at all no matter what size aperture!" Carbon Stars are really a wonderful and fascinating object to observe, and there are plenty of them out there too. We cover but a hand full visible this time of year. For a SkySafari Observing List of this Audio Tour, please email me attheeyepiece@gmail.com .

I've been wanting to do this for quite some time, so I'm happy to introduce the first of a monthly series of "Audio Tours of the Month". These are traditional podcasts, and will not be LIVE shows. These audio tours are meant to be played with you, outside when your at the eyepiece of your own telescope. These tours will be cased off of blog entries at our blog, http://www.attheeyepiece.com, where you can read up on these tours as well. In addition, I will try to capture live screen shots taken of these objects during my observations. You can download these tours to your own MP3 player as well! Simply subscribe to us on iTunes, or select the option to "Download This Episode" from the player page, and when it opens in a new browser window, Right-Click to "Save As" and save it to a location on your local computer to upload to your MP3 player or play direct from the PC. Don't forget too, leave us a review on iTunes! I welcome your feedback on these new endeavors, so feel free to let me know your thoughts by sending me an email, attheeyepiece@gmail.com.

Due to a family illness, I'm not going to be live for this weeks episode. I hope to be back live next week. In the mean time, take a listen to this episode that I dug up from just about this time last year. Hope you enjoy it, clear skies, and hope to see you next time At The Eyepiece.
The Meade LX800 has been a "Hot Topic" ever since Meade announced these revolutionary mount combos back in September of 2011. Preorders started to mount up, and Meade finally released these mounts in limited quantities in April 2012, just before NEAF. There have been a few amateurs out there that have had a chance to do some first light reports, and so far not exactly what Meade, or its customers, were hoping for. Numerous issues have been reported with tracking and with the StarLock system, the heart of the LX800 mount, so many in fact that Meade actually issued a full recall of all LX800s just this week to resolve the software and mechanical issues reported so far. We have a great opportunity this episode to discuss the LX800 mounts with an actual owner, and someone that has reported a functioning LX800 mount, after a replaced StarLock system from Meade. His name is Glenn Spiegelman from Danville, California. Glenn owns a number of astronomical equipment, from Meade to Takahashi, and certainly has a passion for astrophotography. We'll be getting his first hand opinions on the LX800 systems from Meade, and his experience with the mount and its performance. I'm really looking forward to this discussion folks. If your considering one of these Meade LX800's, or simply curious to know first hand opinions of the telescope and mount from a fellow amateur astronomer that actually owns and uses one, then you have got to take a listen to this episode. Don't forget to CALL IN WITH QUESTIONS to Glenn and myself, or simply stop in the chat room and present them there.
We are hard at work planning more episodes, and a set monthly schedule of shows. I have a few reviews that I'm still working on wrapping up too. I'll be back next week, and present what's coming up on our future shows, so until then enjoy this encore presentation of an interview I did with Stephen Ramsden, director of The Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project.
This episode will be part two of my two part series on astronomy outreach. We'll discuss how YOU can get personallly involved in astronomy outreach, by sharing your passion for stargazing with others. What resources exist out there to assist you, and some unique ways you can share astronomy with others. In addition, we will be discussing the Venus Transit on June 5th 2012. How, when, where to observe it. I'll also be announcing a special event for the day of the transit.
This will be a 2 part series. This episode will discuss how you can help others share their passion for astronomy with others by your support for organiations whose sole purpose is astronomy outreach. I discuss some organizations that truely are making a difference, and what you can do to support them. This week I will has have 2 mini-reivews; EQAlign for PC and ObserverPro for iOS. All this and more, on this episode of at the eyepiece. Part Two of Astronomy Outreach will focus on how YOU can do your own outreach, and get involved personally with sharing astronomy with everyone.
I'm so excited to talk to the one, the only, Stephen Ramsden with the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project! If you don't know who Stephen is, well, he is simply the hardest working amateur astronomer that I know of. Since 2007, he has helped promote Solar astronomy by offering presentations and live telescope views of our closest star at over 70 events a year. It is estimated that 50,000 (FIFTY THOUSAND!) PER YEAR have participated in Stephen's outreach events! Stephen estimates that by the end of 2012, they will reach 300,000 for just this year alone!! Wow! We'll talk about the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project, its roots, how he got involved with astronomy, his passion for outreach and Solar observing, some equipment discussions, upcoming Solar events, and of course some of his great stories of outreach. You can't miss this episode! This special episode will be Tuesday, May 22nd at 4pm CST (5pm EST).
We'll be discussing whats up in the night sky for May, interesting astronomy events, and more information from last weeks NEAF 2012 show. The Meade LX800's were released, and first reports are coming in, I'll review the first one out so far regarding this revolutionary telescope. In addition, I'll be doing a follow up review of the SoutherStars SkyFi USB device, and its latest firmware release. All this and more in this weeks episode of At The Eyepiece.
I'll be discussing all the information I can possbily find on the new releases or Hot Topics from this years NEAF 2012 show.. We will also have a live interview with Dan Acker, who will be attending this years NEAF Show and will share his insight and first hand impressions on this years show. All this and more, on this episode of At The Eyepiece. By the way, don't forget if YOU attended this years NEAF and would like to discuss, PLEASE feel free to give us a call and discuss, we would love to hear from you.
I'll be attending the 2012 Tennessee Spring Star Party. This is a free event, and focused primarily on outreach. I'll be sharing with you some interviews and discussings from this event. All this and more, on this episode of At The Eyepiece.
I've been logging some double-stars for that last couple of weeks, and on this episode I'll share some of my favorites for your night of stargazing in April. I also discuss the lessons learned from deforking my Ultima 8 PEC and mounting to a used CG5 GEM. All this and more, this episode of At The Eyepiece.
The holiday weekend activities took a bit more time away from my prep time for the show than I feel confortable with airing, so tonight will be a rebroadcast of an inverview we did with Karl Krasley. Karl is a long time galaxy viewer, and shares his passion for observing these distant objects, as well as talks about some of his great telescopes. A well prepared show is in store of us on 4/15, when I return LIVE on the air.

Sorry folks, but an emergency at work forces me to reschedule this episode. I offer help in planning your Messier Marathon, plus some online resources for virtual Messier Marathons if your nights are clouded out. I also discuss my initial impressions of observing the Sun with the Lunt LS35T. No, I don't own the LS35T, but a friend recently picked one up, and I'm joining him for some solar observing, and I'll share with you my thoughts on this entry-level Hydrogen-Alpha telescope by Lunt Solar Systems. All this and more, this episode of At The Eyepiece. 7 PM Central Time

Do you have a favorite eyepiece that you want to discuss? What about an observing report that you can't wait to share? Are you shopping for a new telescope, and don't know where to start? Do you want to rant or rave about a specific telescope or astronomical accessory? Want to know what you can expect to see through the eyepiece of a modest size telescope? Do you enjoy stargazing and you take your telescope out every clear night? Well, At The Eyepiece is dedicated to you. We don’t focus on the science of astronomy, frankly there are plenty of shows out there to do that. For complete show notes for this archived episode, please visit athttp://attheeyepiece.com. Forgive me for missing the last two weeks folks, a cold with a very persistant cough is still lingering. However, this weeks episode I have been planning for sometime. The holidays are soon upon us. I'll give you my recommendations for gifts for that certain somone of yours that enjoys the stars. I welcome any of your comments as well on gift ideas, so don't forget to give us a call. Also on this show, I'll be doing a mini-review of sorts on my Meade LS8ACF, a scope I have had for over a year and have really enjoyed, just never discussed on the show. If you have any questions on the LS8 in particular, or any scope for instance, just give us a ring right here, At The Eyepiece.
Tonight I thought it would be interesting to share one of my most recent observing session that I recorded via a digital voice recorder. I really enjoy using this method at times, and I hope that you find it intersting as well. This is something new, and I would love to know if you enjoy hearing my observing reports like this. You can download this episode, sync to your favorite mp3 player, bring it out to your scope and listen as I describe my view, and you can compare it to yours! As always, we are open to discussing telescopes, eyepieces, mounts and more, on tonights episode of At The Eyepieces.
NEW time and NEW day - Sunday's at 7pm CST It's that time of year again when we're visited by all kinds of ghosts, ghouls, princesses and tinker-bells vying for sweet treats at every door. Why not treat them to some "spooky" celestial showpieces and use the opportunity to perform some astronomy outreach! This year may not be the best time to present the Moon, only a thin crescent will be visible. Jupiter would be grand, but probably rises too late for most to view. But don't fret, there are still PLENTY of objects visible to show case, and I'll discuss my favorites during this show. All of this and your observing reports, telescope talk, eyepieces, mounts and more, on the next At The Eyepiece Show.
This particular topic kicked off after I read some posts on Astronomy.com. In those posts, some very knowledgeable and respected contributors expressed their dislike for sketching. Also expressed often by fellow stargazers was the inaccurate (in my opinion) idea that you have to be an artist, or at least artistic. Well tonights episode I'm going to try an make a point FOR sketching, and how relevant sketching is to logging your observing sessions, and what tools and techniques exist for us to use. So join on in, or enjoy listening at your leisure, either way, I hope to see you next time At The Eyepiece.
Its that time of year again, the International Observe the Moon Night is tomorrow, October 8th. I'll be discussing this event, observing the moon in general, and some interesting objects to point out of new observers. Also tonight I'll be discussing my latest equipment review, the Apertura AD12. I was graciously offered this 12" f/5 Dobsonian by OpticsMart for the purpose of giving it a review, so I'll be discussing how that went tonight. All of this, and of course other conversions regarding observing, telescopes, eyepieces, mounts and more.
Due to a last minute conflict with my job, I have to schedule up a repeat. The good news, what better repeat then a great interview with Karl Krasley, a fantastic amateur astronomer with lots of experience, and lots of equipment too. So enjoy, and I hope to be back next week, At The Eyepiece.
