Teresa Martinez, host and creator of Roots & Remedy connects you with people that you normally wouldn’t meet in passing. It’s about inviting you to learn more about our cultural roots, ancestral beliefs, preserve our cultural heritage and traditions, plus bringing awareness of the colonization of our culturas . Sharing knowledge through others journeys and narratives, is an important factor to peace, transformation and healing in our lives. Teresa encourages everyone to "Know your roots - conoce sus raíces. You are a remedy - tu eres un remedio".
Scholar and guest, Melissa A. Martinez, PhD, is a native of Brownsville, Texas. Also, a former bilingual school teacher and counselor who is currently an associate professor at Texas State University. She's in the Educational and Community Leadership master’s and Ph.D. in School Improvement programs. In this role, she is passionate about preparing and supporting school and district leaders who are critical practitioner scholars that can meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse communities. This commitment is also reflected in her research, which focuses on issues of equity and access along the P-20 education continuum. In particular, her scholarship focuses on three primary strands of inquiry: 1) college access, college readiness, and college-going cultures for underserved communities, 2) social justice and equity-oriented leadership preparation and Latinx leadership/leaders, and 3) the experiences of faculty of color in academia. Dr. Martinez’s scholarship can be found in various outlets including Teachers College Record, Educational Administration Quarterly, Race Ethnicity and Education, Urban Review, and Journal of Latinos and Education. She is also co-editor of two books: Latino Educational Leadership: Serving Latino communities and preparing Latinx leaders across the P-20 pipeline and the most recent Latinas Leading Schools (2021). Guests: Barakah, Vivian & Irasema have been in interracial relationships for 20+ years combined. Barakah was born in Trinidad and both Iris and Vivian were born in the states, but classify themselves as Indigenous natives of this land. Their ancestral roots are multicultural and they're here to share their experiences about race in their families, and dating outside their race. It's not always easy when one steps outside a families cultural beliefs, but their perspectives can help you if you are, have been or thinking of dating someone from a different culture. Embracing their partners roots is just one way to follow a journey of interracial relationships.

Traditional healer, Irasema Reza Bailey, and creator of Las Manos Magicas joins us to talk about indigenous cultural traditions. She has learned from many Native elders promoting Mexican Traditional Medicine and using the traditional Mexican tool called the Rebozo. Irasema is deepening her spiritual practice through the Danza Azteca Mexica Chichimeca following the Ameyaltonal lineage from San Luis Potosi with capitanes Mazatl and Marucha Ihuakatzin. Through these traditions, Irasema has learned to be aware of the earth' s vibration and it's elements, furthering her connection to Divine Spirit. Guest, Karina Duque, knows from experience what it's like to grow up in mental poverty. She's from the Bronx with Columbian roots, and is a spiritual entrepreneur that practices Reiki and Tarot. We discuss how culturally, mostly low to middle income families of color, have been limited because of our mindset due to the conditions taught during our upbringing around dinero/money. The limited beliefs are passed down from our parents, ancestors and Karina talks about how she evolved out of the poverty mindset. Mark Boone, native to Texas and currently works for the State of Texas, Dept. of Family and Protective Services, shares his narrative on how an emotional breakthrough occurred years after his divorce from a 15+ year marriage. We talk about the tools and people that helped him surpass the patriarchal barrier of suppressing men's emotions. Helping children, adults and elderly thru their emotional and abusive experiences has been his service for 32 years and hopes this can help one life on their journey.
