The Chennai and Mumbai legs are done and dusted and one half of the IPL 2021 caravan moves to Ahmedabad. Both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played their first five games at these two venues – KKR played three in Chennai and two in Mumbai while it was vice-versa for Punjab. And both teams haven’t had the best of first halves this season.

It’s been hard work on the Chepauk track and both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have found that out first hand. While Mumbai have a win-loss record of 2-2, Punjab lost their only game that they played at this venue in this 2021 season. Both sides are coming off a loss and will be looking to bounce back.

Punjab seem a bit lost and are looking completely out of sorts. The KL Rahul-led side have lost three on the bounce and it could’ve well been four on the trot if not for those last two overs from Riley Meredith and Arshdeep Singh against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening encounter. Since then, their batting has flopped twice – scoring 106/8 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and 120 allout against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Meanwhile, their bowling has just not looked threatening enough. The Indian fast bowlers have been slightly inconsistent, especially Mohammed Shami who started off well but his form seems to have tapered off in the last couple of games. The spinners have looked ineffective and have picked up just two wickets from 24 overs. Thus, things are looking dire for Punjab and they need to pull up their socks quickly, else their campaign could well turn out to be like last year.
