Wendelin Van Draanen has written more than thirty novels for young readers and teens. She is the author of the 18-book Edgar-winning Sammy Keyes series—often called “The new Nancy Drew”—and wrote Flipped, which was named a Top 100 Children’s Novel for the 21st Century by School Library Journal and became a Warner Brothers feature film, with Rob Reiner directing. Her other stand-alone titles include Wild Bird, The Secret Life of Lincoln Jones, Runaway, Confessions of a Serial Kisser, Swear to Howdy, and The Running Dream, which was awarded American Library Association’s Schneider Family Award for its "expression of the disability experience." Van Draanen has also created two four-book series for younger readers. The Shredderman books feature a boy who deals with a bully and received the Christopher Award for “affirming the highest values of the human spirit,” and was made into a Nickelodeon movie. The related Gecko & Sticky books, which are full of alluring alliterations that make for rousing read-alouds, are perfect for reluctant readers. A classroom teacher for fifteen years, Van Draanen resides in California where she can be spotted riding shopping carts across parking lots. It is impossible to agree with any human 100 percent of the time. Most people, present company included, have a hard time agreeing with themselves all the time. Yet, it doesn't take much time to realize that we are all operating with various degrees of hypocrisy and cognitive dissidence. In order to really make progress in these debates, we need to start first and foremost with our own positions and hold them up to brutal scrutiny. As we evaluate politics and the common ground we might find, it is important to also note that we may come to a same conclusion but use vastly different methods to do so. While this may not at all seem relevant, it is actually rather important to fully express why we hold said views. In doing so we may see sides that we have never thought before, and therefore need to adjust or modify our thoughts and motivations for drawing deductions. Still, no matter, as always the case with us, we will seek the ground of respect, no matter how much we may disagree.

Dr. Paul Axton is a former missionary to Japan for 20 years. He currently resides in Moberly Missouri where he operates Forging Ploughshares, an organization aimed to bring about peaceful theology. Many people may not know it, but man was originally created to eat only plants as there was no death planned. "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food". Yet as a result of a fallen state, death and war are a part of this life. While we may never find perfect peace on this planet, we are looking to use this platform to harbor in an attitude of getting along and coming together. In this Podcast Paul lays the ground work for the realms of peace inside the realm of the gospel and how we can seek to live it out on a daily basis.

Welcome the disagreement. When two partners always agree, one of them is not necessary. If there is some point you haven’t thought about, be thankful it is brought to your attention. Perhaps you may be corrected before you make a serious mistake.
Distrust your first instinctive impression.
Don’t be defensive. Keep calm and watch out for your first reaction.
Control your temper. You can measure a size of a person by what makes him angry.
Listen first. Give your opponents a chance to talk. Let them finish.
Try to build bridges of understanding. Don’t built higher barriers of misunderstanding.
Look for areas of agreement. Dwell first on the points and areas that you agree.
Be honest. Look for areas in which you can admit your error and do so.
Apologize for mistakes will help disarm your opponent.
Promise to think over your opponents ideas and study them carefully. Your opponent may be right! You never want to hear “ We tried to tell you, but you wouldn’t listen!”
Thank your opponents sincerely for their interest. Anyone who takes the time to disagree with you is interested in the same things you are. Think of them as people who really want to help you and you may turn your opponents into friends.
Postpone action to give both sides time to think through the problem.
Ask could my opponent be right? Partly right? Is there truth or merit to their position? Thedore Roosevelt said if he was right 75 percent of the time he would reach his highest level of expectations.
Respect is always our highest value we strive for on this podcast, which is why it occupies the first letter of R.H.E. This conversation saw vast disagreements, but always a full respect of not only the person and their rights to have them, but also of humanity as a whole. While we cannot agree on all or most things, we can continue to strive after values that seeks to give proper humanity to every person as we build a society that seeks to judge people on their actions and character rather than beliefs they happen to hold. Rob made it a point to say he makes a practice of disagreed with himself. In life, this is a good exercise. as it will ironically serve to strengthen your own position. The great Lao Tzu said that if you don't know yourself and your enemy you will lose, if you know yourself but not your enemy you will exchange loses. But if you know yourself and know your enemy, you will win the war. To truly be successful, you need to know your foes arguments better than they do. In this episode we are reversing the roles from the atheist grilling the Christian! While we take on a variety of issues and philosophical musings, we managed to do so with lots of respect and contemplation. This episode will feature several great points and counter points and it is a lot of food for thought. While as a Christian I might not absolutely believe everything I posit, it is sometime beneficial to articulate the devils' advocate to fully understand and explore your own positions.
