Hello! Welcome to The Determined People Podcast, hosted by John Harrell, bestselling author, inspirational speaker, blogger and now podcaster. The Determined People Podcast is a two-pronged approach to podcasting. Every day I will offer a short, 1-2 minute inspirational message designed to start your day the right way. It’s not rah-rah stuff or fluff. The messages are designed to make you think, to inspire you, and to sustain you as you face the unknown challenges of the day. Bi-weekly I post interviews with real people who have honest, relatable stories. People who are willing to share their experience, strength and hope from their own life’s difficulties. When you listen to their stories, it is my hope you think, if they made it, so can I. Our world needs hope, and everyone I meet has a story. All of us have faced difficulties. In fact, we are facing one now…the global pandemic which has compromised our lives, our mental health and has impacted all of us uniquely. By sharing our stories, we connect at the heart level. We are unguarded. And through podcasting, these stories are available whenever you need them. So let’s get started.

And you will learn how Kerie embraced psychotherapy to work on herself, a journey that continues today. Kerie is an inspiration. She shows no bitterness or lingering resentment. When you speak with other people, what are your conversations about? Are you talking about great ideas or are you talking about other people? Gossip is wrong. Let's spread some goodness to others...
Thinking differently means considering a situation from a different point of view. It applies in your life when you want to make changes, too!

Life can be hard as hell sometimes. If you are still breathing, God isn't finished with your life.
Whatever our minds can conceive, and believe,we will achieve. The words of Napoleon Hill are true, so why not believe them?
To be empathetic means you have a shared experience. The only person who knows how someone feels who has lost a child is someone who has lost a child, too.
The division in our country is disturbing. People tear into each other over politics. Seriously??? Just because someone's politics don't align with yours doesn't make them a bad person.
Build others up. Otherwise, we will destroy ourselves.
On April 20, 1999, the largest school massacre in history occurred. The name Columbine will forever be in our minds and our hearts. But one student did not die in vain.
There is no word to describe the loss of a child. I believe it’s too painful to describe.
In 2016, Melissa Fleming and her family were given the worst news imaginable. Their son, Brock, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Not quite 7 at the time, Brock couldn’t understand why he was the only kid in school with brain cancer. Yet, Brock wasn’t deterred. He wanted to “kick cancer in the nuts!”
Click on the link to watch how this brave family dealt with the loss of a child, and how they are continuing Brock’s desire to kick it in the nuts!
It doesn't take a lot of effort to accumulate clutter. It's almost like it actually procreates!
It feels good to get rid of the junk, but it's best if we never allow it in.
We hear about "work/life balance," but I don't believe we can truly live balanced lives. We must take care of ourselves along the way, which means we take time for the things that are important, the things that keep us healthy.
Whatever you celebrate, be it Passover, Easter or nothing at all, I wish you and your family peace...
What does the term "user" mean to you? We have met them. Maybe we have been one during our lives.
How does it feel to be used?

In 2016, suicide became the number two killer of young people. And it rages on. One in two kids have contemplated ending their life multiple times. We can stop this!
All of us are chasing something. But the most important thing is actually chasing us. Let Him catch you...
Hope is all we have left when it feels like everything is lost. If you lose your hope, you lost everything...
I march to the beat of a different drummer, but it's a great rhythm. You, too have a unique rhythm. Find it!
No one gets through life without experiencing heartache and pain. Sometimes it's disappointment, and sometimes it's so severe you don't see any way to get through it.
But God has promised to use everything for good. We have to face it and do the work. But remember, He doesn't break promises...
Every day when we check our social media accounts, we see people tearing each other apart. Relationships are broken, people are in pain, and hope is missing.
In today's message, I remind you that there is so much goodness in our lives. We can lose sight of it because of the darkness around us, But the darkness doesn't make the goodness any less real.
Everything that we see, everything that has been created from cars to furniture to tall buildings was once in the imagination of someone. Imagination is one of our most powerful tools to create the life we want. But there's one more step to having an idea. Today I talk about that step...
Contentment gets a bad rap. People sometimes think that people who are content have no ambition or drive. Nothing could be further from the truth.
In today's episode, I discuss what being content means to me.
Aligning yourself with the Spirit will always bring what you are looking for: peace, prosperity and fulfillment.
I realize that true love is rare, and we all want it. It is one thing that unites us. But how do we find it?
Our old patterns of thinking probably won't be effective with new problems. That's where innovation comes in. See the challenge (I hate the word "problem") from as many different angles as possible. Then you become solution conscious.
Quiet confidence is demonstrated by what we don't do. We don't call attention to ourselves or our accomplishments. Much of today's society is impressed by our professional resumes and degrees. Let's be impressed by the people who go about their business, taking care of business without needing the attention of the masses.
Christine Moore is living her recovery "out loud." For years, she hid her addiction to prescription meds from her family and friends. Then everything came apart, which led Christine into a rehab facility. Four days before she was set to leave rehab, she was served divorce papers and a restraining order, preventing her from seeing her two sons, ages 4 and 2 at the time.
Click on the link to experience this amazing story of recovery and redemption.
Life will knock you on your ass. And when you get up, you might get knocked down again. Don't quit. Don't give up. Keep going...
We live our lives habitually. An example: do you drive to work differently every day? Do you dry off from the shower the same? You get my point.
Today we briefly examine our habits.
Negative people will drain you of energy. Keep them away and bring good people into your life.
The culture of The United States is greed. Work hard. Be more. Get more. There's nothing wrong with hard work and acquiring assets. Today's episode examines why.
God plants seeds in our hearts and minds. Are you watering them, bringing them to life, or letting the weeds grow?

I don't have bad days. But I get that some days are better than others. It all begins with attitude.
Life is a battle. Sometimes it's a short fight. Other times it's full-on war. Whichever fight we find ourselves in, it' important to remember we are all in the fight together.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime. Staci Austin was one of those women.
In 2006, she had it all: a successful career in real estate, a new home, new car, some savings and no debt. Then her abuser entered her life. Today, Staci has rebuilt her life, but she still has some lingering effects from her time with the abuser. In today's podcast, Staci intimately shares her story of how she survived. Her hope is that someone will hear her story and find the inner strength and courage to escape an abusive relationship or avoid one altogether by recognizing the warning signs.
Get ready. This is a powerful story of survival, and hope...

We have unlimited potential. Our greatest resource, our mind, is largely untapped. Use it. Ask the Creator to guide you. With God in your corner, you can't lose. Oh, it won't be easy, but you will thrive.
Do you talk to yourself? Are you actively listening to yourself? Be selective about what you choose to listen to.
Yep! I went there. You know, one of the subjects we aren't supposed to talk about. But why not?
In today's broadcast, I share my views on organized religion. It may surprise you.

Christian Moore is an internationally renowned speaker, author and founder of the WhyTry program which teaches resilience to kids in schools.
Christian is an expert on resilience. He wrote “The Resilience Breakthrough,” selling well over 100,000 copies. But Christian Moore is a name we probably should have never heard of.

In part two of our three-part interview, you will learn more about Christian and his desire to change the world through educating kids about resilience.
Positive thinking books are bestsellers. But are we really buying something to help us discover something we already have? Here are my thoughts...
We unconsciously take risks every day. Let's step out in faith and take a meaningful risk.
Being open and unguarded is key to making deeper human connections. This scares some people, because intimacy means opening up to another. Fear of judgment or being ridiculed stops some from making this deeper connection. Be fearless. Connect...
We live life and, hopefully, we grow. Growth comes from acknowledging and owning up to our mistakes, not from the things we have done right. But there are people who refuse to see you as the new you. Those people want to keep you mired in your past. Those aren't your people.
A person with a vision, combined with a burning desire and conviction to see that vision turn into reality will succeed. Other people simply drift through life, accepting whatever comes their way...
People will project their own insecurities onto us, wanting to mold us into something they want us to be. But we have goals, dreams and desires of our own. A person who projects is not good for us. Keep them far, far away, and keep the honest encouragers near...
Texting is for quick check-ins, not real conversation. You learn this when you have a text message misinterpreted. There's no voice inflection or emotion in a text.
If you want to really connect, call the person.
We have unlimited potential. But are we allowing the wrong people to deter us, to set limits on us?
All of us have a past. Some are more painful than others, and we belabor our mistakes of the past over and over again.
Get out of that type of thinking. You don't live in the past anymore. Live now...
Henry David Thoreau wrote, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation, and die with their song still in them."
What dreams, plans and desires are you putting off? Why not take that first step out in faith and begin. Today.
Our world needs leadership. Badly! To lead effectively, we must take ownership or our lives and live out our goals, dreams and desires. Don't hesitate. The time is now...

Don't you want to be heard? What's stopping you? When you find your voice, remember those who have not found theirs, and speak up for them...
Praise is good. False praise sends the wrong message. Today, we look at both sides of that equation.
Forgiving the people who have caused us harm is hard, no doubt. I'm not trying to minimize the hurt and pain that has been inflicted by others. But finding a way to forgive is important, and today's message explains why...
Accepting other people where they are in life doesn't mean you approve of their behavior. Acceptance releases you from the burden of judgment. Set healthy boundaries for yourself, allowing the good people in while keeping the bad influences out.
Have you ever stopped to consider how important your name is to you? It's part of our identity, and it helps to define who we are....

Everyone has an opinion about how we should live our lives. But it's not their life to live. Doing the right thing sounds easy, until you have to do it! Being counterculture isn't popular, but oftentimes it's necessary.
Everyone has challenges. Sometimes they appear to be overwhelming, even insurmountable. But nobody of this generation has dealt with traveling across the world to fight a war, leaving a young bride behind.
Do you find yourself just "going through the motions," not feeling fulfilled? It might be time to let go of the rebel inside you and surrender to a Higher Power.
Every day, we make an innumerable number of decisions. And remember, not deciding is a decision, too.
People blame others for their lack of success or opportunity. This is a lie that is advanced by the media, and exploited by the politicians. No one is a victim. I am not denying that bad things happen to people. Those are usually out of our control. But you can make it if you shake of the victimhood mindset and start moving forward.

Inflation is on everyone's minds. In today's message, I talk about other kinds of inflation.

On this show, I talk a lot about our life's purpose. Today, I speak about something else we need to be purposeful about: our time!
Bring light into the life of others, not cuts and put downs. People need encouragement now more than ever. Be part of the solution.
When something breaks, we fix it. This applies to ourselves. Self-work is hard, but denying the need to focus on what's broken inside of us doesn't make it go away. Nor does it make life any easier...
It's said that patience is a virtue. While this may be true, patience is something I really have to work on. Do you?

The question "why" is a legitimate question, but only if you cannot figure out the answer for yourself.
Every year, people make New Year's Resolutions, and most of them are never achieved. Today, I will give you a new way to approach your resolutions.

Let's make it a conscious effort to bring light into the lives of others. We live in a broken world, and there is a lot of darkness in it. We must strive to be positive influences. We won't help everyone, but we will help some...

Vic Feazell was the District Attorney in McLennan County when he discovered some inconsistencies which aroused his suspicions from the confessions of a drifter named Henry Lee Lucas. Lucas had testified to over 300 unsolved murders, including three in McLennan County. When Vic challenged the Task Force set up by the Texas Rangers, this set off a maelstrom of events which could have landed Vic in prison for 80 years.
Don't believe in the "Deep State?" You might change your opinion after watching the second installment of our interview. Vic and I cover this, plus forgiveness, how he got into the Guiness Book of World Records and coming full circle in this concluding episode of our time together on The Determined People Podcast.
Every experience we have in life prepares us for something else. We gain wisdom in the process.

I encourage you to go for the life of your dreams. Aim higher than you have been. Settling for mediocrity is not an option.
All of us have dreams put in our hearts by our Creator. This isn't an accident. God wants us to trust Him to pursue our calling, not settle for what the world wants us to do.
I hear people say they are "living their lives without regrets," but that's not possible to do in a broker world. The important point is, do not let past regrets weigh you down...
Holding a grudge against someone who has offended you is like carrying around a backpack full of bricks. It weighs you down to the point you cannot live fully. Forgiveness takes time, for certain, but I encourage you to find it in your heart to forgive those who have offended you.

To set yourself apart, you must do things differently. In today's episode, we give one example of how to make a lasting impression on others...
Some people think that reading is outdated...even old fashioned. I love to read. From the time I was a small boy, my eyes were opened to the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, to the heroic exploits of Harriet Tubman. Reading opens the mind to possibilities and dreams never imagined before..
Vic Feazell was the District Attorney in McClennan County when he received a call from the renowned Texas Rangers. The Rangers had a man in custody who had confessed to three murders in Vic's jurisdiction, and they wondered if Vic wanted to have his picture taken with the Rangers when they closed out the cases? When you are a politician whose political stock was on the rise, of course you say yes to The Rangers. Only problem was, the man who confessed to the Rangers had not committed the murders. When Vic got suspicious, all hell broke loose.
On December 6, 2019, "The Confession Killer" was released on Netflix as a five-part documentary. Listen to one of the key players from the documentary.

Life feels like a race to the finish line sometimes. Our only competition is ourselves, though. We are running our own race. Are we running as hard as we can?
Being the busiest person around doesn't always mean you are the most successful person. If wealth-building and acquiring stuff is what drives you, then maybe you are reaching a modicum of success. But I encourage you...don't forget about what matters most: people.
Living life does not mean we are spectators. No. We are participants. We will get as much out of life as we put into it. The choice is ours and ours alone.
In the United States, we have the right to vote for whomever we wish. However, we have allowed our voting to separate us...to divide us. Personally, I do not care who you cast your vote for. I care about something else which is the subject for today.

When your child is diagnosed with an incurable rare genetic disorder, you get into action.
Life is a zero-sum game. When we gain, we lose in another area. Today we examine those losses.
Let go of concerning yourself with what others think. They are judging you anyway. Their opinions don't matter because they have no authorityover your life. That belongs to God...
Opinions are everywhere, just ask anyone for theirs and they will willingly share it. But is their opinion based upon facts? Or is it just what theythink? Something to consider...
Every day we wake up, we are presented with another opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those we care about. Today we examine how we focus our day.

Tonight my life could have ended because I had a horrible auto accident. Even worse, the five young people who were in the car that hit me could have been killed or injured. We are all okay, and for that, among many other things, I consider myself grateful and blessed...
I see people chasing status and stuff. There is so much more to life...experiences, memories along with the peace that contentedness brings you. Don't chase so hard that you miss out on life.
What do you believe about yourself? Are you telling yourself the truth, or are you living under a false impression?
People don't like change. I get that. But we cannot predict our futures. We can't even tell what the next five minutes hold. Being adaptable during times of change is the key to successful outcomes.

People have difficulty establishing boundaries in their lives. The key to doing it is this: work on yourself. Get yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy. You will begin attracting the right people into your life, and you will feel fine about establishing boundaries that revolve around what you want...your priorities for your life.
This approach is usually thought of when it comes to a project. Beginning with the end in mind applies to our lives, too.

In 2018, my first book was published. The book is called, "Killing My Father Then Finding Him." The theme of the book is about how I came to forgive both of my parents for the abuse and neglect I felt all through my childhood. I hid my upbringing from my friends in school. I masked it well because today I read a short piece one of my childhood friends wrote about me and why he was buying the book.

One of the popular things people say in conversation is, "back in the day." I hate this saying because it's almost like admitting your best days were somewhere in the past. Do not believe it for one second. Our best days are ahead of us.
Both paths are available to you. One leads to nowhere while the other one leads to your destiny.
The pain of losing someone you love is hard, and sometimes it feels unbearable. Allow yourself time to grieve. Grief is part of your healing. This I promise you, you will get through it.

It takes a rare kind of courage and integrity to walk away from a 30-year career and begin anew. But that's exactly what Dale Lykins did. Dale had been a pastor in a traditional church for 30 years, but when he noticed the church was becoming more and more interested in preserving and perpetuating itself rather than focusing on the teachings of Jesus, Dale decided it was time for him to go. Dale trusted God and started a church where all were welcomed and celebrated. He called his new beginning "The Open Table" where he pastors a growing, thriving congregation.
Just before founding The Open Table, Dale shared with his wife that he was gay. Through dedication, commitment and a whole lot of love, Dale and his wife are learning how to navigate their way through this new paradigm.
We discuss all of this and more in my fascinating and inspiring interview with Dale.
Our character flaws (we all have them) must be fixed from the inside out. Covering them up with bigger bank accounts, new homes or cool cars doesn't work.

In 2016, suicide became the #2 killer of our kids. Today, I had the honor and privilege to speak with a group of foster children. These kids, our most vulnerable citizens, deserve every chance to make it in this world. My message of growing up in a violent, fear-filled home allows me to connect with kids. I am forever grateful to God for putting me in the home he did, which gives me the ability to be relatable to these children.

On April 1st, 2019, Officer Jerome Turner was on the phone with his wife talking about their date night scheduled for that evening. Officer Turner didn't make his date with his wife. People talk about "back in the day" like their best days are behind them. This just isn't true. Your best moments are right now and in your future. Believe it.
Looking at myself and all my flaws wasn't easy. I knew I had work to do or things would never change. Running from my problems was no longer a viable strategy. I had to do the work.
