Sunset Provisions: Recent Episodes

Janelle Nicole

I know so many people who are miserable at their jobs, and they stay miserable -- for a host of different reasons. And I was exactly the same as an attorney at a major law firm until I realized that entrepreneurship was a real and tangible solution for me. "Sunset Provisions" is a bit of a play on words. In a legal document, a sunset provision is the section of the contract that says if a certain event doesn't happen by a specific date, the entire agreement will terminate automatically. And as the sun kind of sets of my legal career and rises on my life as an entrepreneur, I want to share all my challenges, successes and lessons with you, and I want to bring as many people as I can find to share their stories as well. Before I moved to ATL, I thought entrepreneurship meant you were Jeff Bezos or you lived in your parents' basement, and when I came to Atlanta, I met folks who existed and thrived in the space in-between. This podcast is meant to bring that beautiful in-between space to you. I hope this podcast inspires you to push the bounds on what you believe is possible and to draft a "sunset provision" in your own life.

Alex Davis and I have had our fair share of struggles during our time working in corporate America, but in today's episode, we get to discuss what the path towards career freedom looked like for us both. From big four accountant to financially conscious life and business coach, we learn about the steps Alex Davis took to get where she’s at today -- happy, fulfilled, and thriving.

What comes to mind when you think of an entrepreneur? Personally speaking, entrepreneurs give me a scammer/hustler vibe. I thought that they were broke, constantly asking for money, and struggling. Now what actually makes up an entrepreneur is far more interesting. Entrepreneurs are often problem solvers, can handle discipline, have the ability to see the vision in the future, have a logic-based brain, are organized, are delusional, and have humility/the ability to seek out support. I'm dealing with one of the biggest business hurdles ever to date, so I know a lot of other entrepreneurs would have quit or not known how to move forward. I used to think entrepreneurship was for everyone, but for a lot more people than we initially think. Wanna listen to the full episode? Grab it on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. At some point in your business, you’ll have to have what I call a sales conversation. You’ll need to speak to someone with the intent of selling them something. For some, that makes people's stomachs turn. Their biggest fear is appearing too salesy. It’s not sleazy to tell someone who needs the thing you offer, that you have a solution. Everyone in our program provides a business that solves a real problem. Think about what problem your business is solving, how well is your business solving it, do you genuinely believe in the solution you’re offering, and what needs to change. Selling is being confident in the value you provide and positioning yourself in front of people who need that solution. But that’s hard. That’s a skill. Wanna listen to the full episode? Marketing is so consuming, you get swept away. Even for me, I’ve been finding that marketing efforts take the largest and most consistent hours in my schedule.

A mistake a lot of new entrepreneurs make is letting marketing be the primary goal and getting swept away in the pursuit of new clients. Your number one priority should be the extreme and utmost delight of the clients in front of you.

I'll be honest with you, providing quality service/product isn’t enough. That’s the bare minimum.

More often than not, people are displeased when they invest too much time in products, services, and coaching programs because the marketing was fantastic but the actual product and service didn't give the expectations they had for the day. We are looking not just to be a good service provider or offer products, we want to delight people and want them to walk away feeling so glad they made the investment with us.

When there's growth from marketing, you can see that past and former clients have done the work and shouted us out on their large platforms. When those clients do that we get the most followers, engagements, and applications to our program.

Delighting clients will be your greatest source of income, growth, and fulfillment in your business. Focus on them.

I used to think that once I pushed past a certain point or the first time I experienced perfectionism and imposter syndrome that that would be it. I'd be good to go and never feel those feelings again

But the reality is that entrepreneurs and truthfully just people in general experience perfectionism constantly. As entrepreneurs, we are putting ourselves out there time and time again in uncomfortable situations. And when we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations or something new, it's only natural that impostor syndrome comes up.

The real solution is having the tools to build resilience. In our program, we have a licensed psychologist who runs group therapy once a month and we recently covered a framework for imposter syndrome that we love.

This episode will cover the 5 steps to help you overcome the feeling of imposter syndrome.

Dr. Zoe Johnson has a master's in social work and a Ph.D. in education. Zoe had thoughts about running away from entrepreneurship because she didn't want to have to focus on marketing. However, she eventually realized that she wanted to invest more in children's education. In order to provide that, Zoe had to become an entrepreneur.

The key thing Zoe focused on was surrounding herself with great people along with the support of the program. During the conversation, Zoe paid attention to unique offers and setting up foundations to turning down clients that aren't the right fit. People were excited to hear about Zoe's private practice and it led to many referrals as a result. Zoe's main message is to make people comfortable with saying no or that you're not a good fit. It's so interesting to watch unhappy people keep putting bandaids over their unhappiness, its not a real fix, it's temporary.

I really believe that joy doesn't live in the things that we designed, a lot of the joy is going after it. We can't and shouldn't strive toward perfection.

Lifestyle design is intentionally crafting the exact life that you want. It's believing that what you want is possible and building a plan on how to do that.

From where I stand, the entire purpose of entrepreneurship is lifestyle design, this episode dives deep into why!

One of the most shocking things I learned as a young entrepreneur was that most mindset hurdles are rooted in fear. The fear of disappointing others, of embarrassment, or of failure. It's vital to take risks and face fear, it's what helps you be a successful and profitable business.

In order to create a successful business for the long haul, you have the right tools to create that business and keep it thriving.

In this podcast, the three most powerful resources therapy, books, and like-minded people can be utilized to your advantage!

It's so important to put in the effort and lean into changing your mindset. Entrepreneurship is literally a new way of thinking so it'll take some manual thinking to do it. But it's worth it cause you're custom building a life for yourself! Looking for entrepreneurial tips and biz advice? Follow us on IG or Tik Tok @sidebizsmart. Want to follow the host? It can be easy to lose yourself in corporate America; especially with the exhausting day-to-day work. It's mentally and physically draining. BUT, when you are your own boss these things change.
