In this Substack Live conversation, I spoke with Daniel Hunter, the founder of IndieThinkers. I share the origin story of my newsletter community, Please Hustle Responsibly, which started from my early 2023 posts on Medium before transitioning to Substack and later beehiiv. Zebbie compares his restaurant's growth with established names like Hattie B's and talks about the essence of creating a unique menu, including offerings like local beers and fried fish. There is a growing crisis of representation as Black women's voices are systematically erased from mainstream media. This episode examines the concerning pattern of cancellations affecting prominent Black women journalists and content creators, from Joy Reid's MSNBC show to NPR's "Louder than a Riot" podcast. I share why diverse perspectives are crucial for accurate storytelling, analyze the rise of independent media platforms as alternatives, and discuss sustainable models for creating accessible content. Join the conversation about subscription fatigue, community-funded journalism, and the future of Black women's voices in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. #BlackWomenInMedia #MediaDiversity #IndependentJournalism

YouTube and Spotify have been competing for video podcast market share, and now Netflix is reportedly jumping in the ring. This episode analyzes recent developments including YouTube's Premium Lite announcement, Netflix's potential entry into video podcasting, and Spotify's strategic moves. I talk about why YouTube might have the upper hand in indie content, Netflix's strengths in cultural moments, and Spotify's rapid adaptation to video. Hear my two cents on how these streaming platforms are evolving to accomodate video podcasting, what this means for their revenue models, and what it means for content creators and consumers. I made this episode for podcast creators, media professionals, content creators, and anyone interested in the future of video podcasting and streaming.

Community building costs money. In this episode, I explore how IRL events and social platforms have transformed the way we build relationships, create communities, and derive value from our connections. I’m pulling from my own experience and reflections from a few sources listed below.
I’m sharing real world examples of the cost and potential revenue associated with building paid memberships and hosting in-person events as well as variations on the types of online communities that connect in real life. I also talk about ways to build authentic relationships online (read = slide into those comments and DMs!).
This episode is made for online creators, creative entrepreneurs, social media professionals, people building portfolio careers, and anyone interested in understanding the economics of community building.

I've published tons of free education on this podcast, my YouTube channel, and my newsletter (linked below). I've never tried to monetize any of the information I put out, but I do want to develop a paid digital product sooner rather than later. Specifically, I'd love to create a video course on storytelling for creators and entrepreneurs looking to grow their personal brand. So what's been holding me back? Here's my semi-structured stream of consciousness about what this process will look like for me.

Stephen Satterfield is the sommelier and restaurant industry veteran behind Whetstone Magazine, Whetstone Radio Collective, and Hone. His food media empire inspires me so much, and I love how he's showing the incredible ways a niche can be a wealth of opportunity. I discovered him on High on the Hog, the Netflix docuseries. If you're hungry, don't listen to this.
I'd love to hear from you!

I grew up watching KeKe Palmer, and I'm happy to see her still thriving in the media and arts industry. She may be just another Hollywood actor to some, but I think she's one of the best examples of an indie creator multihyphenate. This deep dive came highly requested on YouTube! I'm diving into the world of celebrity podcast by sharing an unlikely take on Shannon Sharpe's show, Club Shay Shay. Why would a 3x Super Bowl Champion and Fox Sports 1 host making $3M/year create a video podcast specifically for YouTube? I try to answer that question in this episode.

There are many ways to fund independent creative projects or even new business ventures. Crowdfunding isn't one I see talked about much. I'm not a start-up, so all the think pieces on raising venture capital didn't really apply to me. I did a crowdfund for my first independent short film, and I share my thoughts on what worked, what didn't, and what you should consider if you're looking to leverage your community to help start your next big idea!

How are Black businesses doing? I mean, really doing? I took a look at the numbers for North Carolina, and a few studies of Black businesses in the US to find out. I gave my assessment of what's going well, areas of opportunity, and a few suggestions for a path forward.

I sat down with Damien Moore, the co-founder of Dame's Chicken and Waffles, a staple restaurant founded in Durham, NC. With 4 locations across North Carolina, this Southern comfort food and brunch staple is showing no signs of slowing down. We talked about how Dame shifted his catering business to develop a brick-and-mortar restaurant, how they've approached expanding into new locations, and how they've weathered economically uncertain times. I love how he thinks about menu development, customer experience, and investing in his community and staff. This is a must-listen episode for food entrepreneurs.

Kasem Rodriguez Mohsen is one of the co-founders of Equilibrium Ventures, a venture capital fund based in Winston-Salem, NC. Venture capital isn't typically a space where minority founders are successful, and not all funders have been entrepreneurs themselves. I was super interested in Kasem's perspective on business funding, as he's been a serial entrepreneur who's had 3 exits (aka sold his businesses). This intimate conversation on our relationships with money, innovation, ourselves, each other, and the future of raising capital is one that left me with contentment and admiration for his journey. I wanted to honor his lived experience, successes, and failures. I know you'll receive notes of motivation and encouragement while hearing him share his wisdom.

Shannon Healy is the founder and owner of Alley Twenty Six, a staple cocktail bar in downtown Durham. This James Beard Award nominee and restaurant owner shared his journey to creating and sustaining this bar from day 1 to now. We talked about how the bar got its name, the evolution of the food and alcohol scene in downtown Durham, and his North Star – investing in educating his customers and employees while selfishly creating something cool that everyone can feel a part of. If you're a food entrepreneur looking to get creative with crafting the ultimate customer experience, this episode is for you. So pour yourself a drink (non-alcoholic and mocktail options are also valid!) and enjoy the laughs and expertise in this interview.

In this special financial roundtable episode of Honey & Hustle, I am joined by Andrea Inoken and Corey Barbour to discuss grant funding and securing commercial loans. While offering free money to businesses, grants can be highly competitive. Entrepreneurs should align their business with organizations that match their industry or geographical location to enhance their chances of securing grants successfully. Grants also often come with post-award reporting obligations. Entrepreneurs must understand the reporting expectations and be ready to demonstrate how the grant funds were utilized and the impact they had on the business.
Corey emphasized the importance of evaluating their capacity to repay the loan and the character of the borrower. Understanding your cash flow and financial position is essential before taking on debt. This aligns with the idea of being prepared to answer questions about how the loan will be repaid and demonstrating a track record of responsible financial behavior.

In this episode with Henry Woodbridge, founder of the Undecided app, we discuss nontraditional paths to education for high school seniors. We dive into the challenges of college decision-making and the importance of informed choices. This ed-tech founder is creating software solutions to empower students navigating the college admissions and scholarship application processes. By offering tools for self-reflection, campus exploration, and fundamental education about college applications, the app guides students toward making informed decisions aligned with their academic and personal goals. There are a lot of different pathways to education that aren't necessarily four-year degrees.
In addition to his app, we talked about angel investors, how we met his co-founders, and being a sober entrepreneur.

In this episode of Honey & Hustle, I interview Taylor Adams, the founder of Scrapped Productions. We discuss the importance of maintaining creative integrity while pivoting your niche or purpose. Taylor shares his journey from working in the athletic department at North Carolina State University to starting his own production company. The conversation also touches on the term "content creator" and its implications. We argue that not all creative work should be labeled as "content," as it diminishes the value and uniqueness of different artistic mediums.

Chisa Pennix-Brown is the founder of Lady Bizness and Give It to the People. We talked about the origin of the name Lady Bizness (it's probably what you think), how she separated her business persona from her personal brand, and how she started Give it to the People with her husband. Between laughs, I got to hear about her approach to forming genuine connections and relationships. She's a speaker, event curator, and author who brought raw honesty to our conversation. If you listen closely, you can hear the connection between knowing who you are, what you want, and attracting opportunities with ease.

In this episode, I speak with serial entrepreneur Angela Salamanca about her journey of starting businesses as an immigrant. Learn how Angela turned her labor of love into a legacy of inclusion with ventures like Gallo Pelon, Centro, and Ex-Voto. Discover how necessity drives creativity, leading many immigrants to entrepreneurship out of a need for financial stability. Angela emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, community building, and shared experiences as key values for creating her legacy. Creating spaces where everyone feels safe and welcomed is crucial for people to be their best selves. From her restaurants to her annual 5K run on Dia de los Muertos, she shares how intimacy plays a role in community building. I was shocked to learn that with her experience as a restaurateur, she still is having trouble securing a business loan (SBA loans seem particularly difficult). From running to cooking, this conversation covers a lot of vulnerable topics. I hope you enjoy this wild ride!

In this insightful episode of Honey and Hustle, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ed Ross, the founder of Core AI. Our conversation delved into the nuances of authentic leadership and the transformative power of effective communication in the workplace. Ed emphasized that time does not equate to experience or expertise, and that individuals should be encouraged to lead in areas where they excel.
We explored the importance of storytelling in presentations and how it can make information more memorable and engaging. Ed provided valuable insights into how every conversation, whether it's with a large audience or a one-on-one interaction, counts towards building relationships and influencing others.
A particularly touching story was shared about Ed's mentor, Connie, who played a pivotal role as a sponsor in his career by providing support and opportunities for growth. This story highlighted the difference between a manager, a mentor, and a sponsor, and the profound impact a sponsor can have on an individual's professional journey.
We also touched on the challenges faced by Black founders in raising capital and how Ed has navigated this landscape with the support of angel investors and strategic partnerships. The episode concluded with a rapid-fire Q&A session, where Ed shared his indispensable business tool, his alternative career choice (which is none, as he loves what he does), and a description of his brand, which is all about authenticity and helping others.

In this special bonus episode of the Honey & Hustle podcast, Dane Cardiel, the founder of GoodTape and a member of the Gumball team shares his perspective on community fractures in podcasting and discusses the importance of innovation in marketing efforts. We recorded this episode at Resonate Podcast Festival, the perfect backdrop for this conversation about podcasting and podcast monetization. We delve into the importance of understanding the depth of audience affinity to a show in the podcast industry. While downloads can indicate the scale of a show, they may not be the best metric for determining the audience's affinity. Advertisers really want to know if an ad campaign effectively reaches the audience and if that audience converts.
We raise the question of whether there is a resurgence of physical media, such as vinyl records and cassette tapes, and how this may impact the podcasting industry. This conversation truly highlights the historical overlap between print and audio, and the desire for a separate and tangible media experience. Dane shares how the skills and knowledge gained in newspaper journalism can be applied to audio production and storytelling.

Liberation Station is a children's book store that was created on the belief that youth need a safe space for discovery. A space centered in humanity, joy, and curiosity. A physical space located in downtown Raleigh in view of the capital building made for the perfect location in the eyes of Victoria Scott-Miller and her family.
Starting with bringing curated books and folding table to pop-up events and transitioning to online sales made Victoria feel like they were being "stretched in a way that minimized our presence." We talked about the importance of taking up space and how challenging a system that bans books is in her DNA.
She brings her childhood of listening to Juicy J and Three 6 Mafia to her confident approach to designing a space that anyone can feel safe to learn, read, and grow. Find out how you can support their new location at https://liberationstationbookstore.com/

Durham's first sweet hub has landed in historic East Durham. Stacey Ramos is the founder of Bull City Sweet Shoppe, and the lead curator of the confections that are featured in her shop form herself and other businesses in the area. In getting a brick and mortar location, she had to weigh so many questions – When should we think about hiring? Which businesses fit our model? What is the cost of doing business in a physical location? All of those questions are centered in her belief that whether you're a boss or an employee, you're life shouldn't revolve around work.
Stacey knew from the age of 15 that she wanted to be an entrepreneur, and while her path wasn't linear, she has a wealth of experiences that have contributed to her current success. In this episode, she's candid about her struggles, how she learned what she didn't want to embody as a boss, and how lifelong learning is integral to her success (and anyone's success) as an entrepreneur. Accepting that debt could benefit his business is a financial mindset shift that Chi Yiu made during his journey in entrepreneurship. Being afraid of failure and not wanting to be in a position to be fired from a job are powerful motivators to exploring different approaches to making your business successful.
Chi founded Wood + Water Studio in 2018 and has since become a champion of affordable housing solutions that meet the present-day needs of the Triangle community. A former East Carolina University student turned kitchen and bath remodeling company owner, Chi has created a business from his passion, rather than running from it (as he did for quite some time).
Our conversation revealed his love for mentorship, relationship development, design, and lifelong learning. I can’t wait for you to learn why he started his business, the challenges he overcame in managing a team, and what’s next on the horizon for Wood + Water. Jennifer and Tina have come a long way from their “sausage wagon” days, but their goal has remained the same: supporting local farmers in getting their meat on your kitchen table. Jennifer Curtis, the co-founder of Firsthand Foods, knows the importance of taking a risk alongside farmers.
Having a healthy relationship with the food you eat, including the knowledge of where it comes from, can prove to be incredibly transformative. It certainly has been in her life. From policy advocacy to direct relationships with farmers, consumers, and chefs, being vocal about improving the quality and sustainability of local meats is no small task for this B-corp certified organization.
Firsthand Foods is working to change the narrative around local food ecosystems, one piece of meat at a time. You may even know some of their local partners – Bull City Burger, Pizzeria Toro, and Longleaf Swine to name a few. With over $1.2 million going to farmers in 2022, they’re just getting started in amplifying the impact of sustainable meat-sourcing practices. Find out how you can get the best meats around on your table for your next meal at https://firsthandfoods.com/

Black farmers are losing land at an alarming rate in the United States. Hearing the struggles of Black farmers in North Carolina during the pandemic prompted the founders of Tall Grass Food Box to ask themselves, “ What is our role in their sustainability?”
Derrick Beasley, Gabrielle Carter, and Gerald Harris came together to aggregate food and produce from Black farmers across North Carolina in a community-supported agriculture (or CSA) food box, with one-off or seasonal subscription purchasing options. With an immediate, positive response from the community following the launch of the project, the demand for more infrastructure to make this collaborative effort long-term grew significantly.
Through fiscal sponsorship and the help of The Bulls of Durham, they have been able to secure a refrigerated truck to transport produce for local pick-up and expand their service area throughout the Triangle. Tall Grass Food Box has created an entry point for people of all ages to grow their relationship with their local food system, an entrepreneurial pursuit in food sovereignty.

Lie + Loft is a brand at the intersection of golf, interior design, and art. The founder, Luke Davis, makes this multi-passionate venture look as easy as enjoying being a homebody on a chilly, winter day. However, pushing through self-doubt without a co-founder as a sounding board has presented him with challenges along the way. It took him 1 year to get his first online customer, proving that building an e-Commerce brand is a long-term endeavor. From his first in-person sales at golf tournaments and golf resorts around the country, he’s stayed true to creating a memorable customer experience from start to finish.
By recognizing that photography and hand-written notes are still hallmarks of brand connection online and through the mail, he’s created a community of “homies” who continue to support his work to this day. Check out Lie + Loft here: https://lieandloft.com/

Using language that’s accessible and inviting to anyone, Omari Akil of Colorway Game Labs has successfully been able to highlight aspects of Black culture through board games. A graphic designer and creative by trade, Omari branched into the world of tabletop design when he and his brother realized that there weren’t many games made with storylines featuring people that looked like them.
Through capitalizing on board game events and conferences, he and his brother were able to get market feedback directly from their target audience in real-time for their first game, Rap Godz. This helped them quickly implement changes and make reiterations in their games to bring them to market faster. Omari shares insider tips and his approach to making changes to tabletop games quickly, niche crowdfunding sites for game projects, and how to take advantage of the different formats available today to create a physical game. By incorporating joy, fun, community, and rest into their gameplay, they’ve made a brand that anyone can enjoy. Find out more at https://www.colorwaygamelabs.com/cgl-intro

I sat down with Topher Thomas, the founder of Coram Houses, at the Durham Bottling Co. to talk about his venture into building affordable housing units in his community (and backyard!). What started as an itch to his curiosity in how to build a tiny home sparked an idea for bringing more value to homeowners with a yard to spare and looking for passive income. His idea also benefits community members in search of an affordable housing solution in their neighborhood who don't want to move further outside of city limits to find a place to live. We often think of infrastructure in the largest of senses: Topher has flipped the idea of a huge building for multifamily housing on its head by specifically targeting the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
