I have yet to craft the email with all the details, but I know many of you are waiting to get yourselves registered. Here’s the link!

TSSR 2025 Registration

And here are some details -- more to follow.

July 17-20, 2025
4:00 pm Thursday to 1:00 pm Sunday
Haverford College, Haverford, PA

$425 for 3 days of fun! ($350 for non-fiber arts companions)

Philosophy – low key enjoyment of each other and the lovely venue. The campus is beautiful and most areas will be open to us, including the library and gallery.

Several informal workshops are expected to be part of the program.

Accommodations – We will each have our own single room in units of 4 to 6 rooms per small pod/apartment. Each pod has its own common room and bathroom.

The group has a dedicated large hall in which we will gather for camaraderie and any programs.

Registration fee – includes administrative costs, room and board for all meals, goody bag and any special events. Massages (if available) are extra.

Dining Hall Meals. The dining hall is excellent and has a great variety of choices. It should be able to meet almost all needs except for those with extreme food issues that would prevent one from eating outside their own home. Cold storage will be available if you wish to bring supplemental food.

Vendor fair – Comprised of any participants who have products to sell will be held. If you wish to vend, please contact me at jan.hamby@gmail.com or via Ravelry message at twinsetjan.

Rooms are fully outfitted with linens and towels. Bring your preferred toiletries and appropriate clothing to venture outdoors in summertime. We will have an area in our group hall to put out snacks you would like to share. Feel free to bring snacks for your own pleasure too. Coffee, tea, and water will be available throughout the day. Alcohol is permitted inside our spaces…and, of course, bring your knitting, spinning, crocheting, weaving!

Closest major airport – Philadelphia International Airport, about a 40-minute drive. Haverford is also accessible by light rail from both the airport and several area Amtrak stations. There will be plenty of parking adjacent to our dormitory.

Registration – Complete the online registration form linked above and send payment to Jan Hamby, 2 Fair Winds Ln, Quarryville, PA 17566 to be received by May 31.

All attendees of the last 2 years, plus anyone who has sent me their email to be notified of registration, will get an email in the next few days with much more info.

I just received news from the St. Francis Retreat House that they will be closing at the end of October of 2024. They are just too far in the hole and in too much need of maintenance and repairs to continue.

This is a real shame for us, or is it a real opportunity? I’ve been thinking about some other options for the retreat in the last year or two. Now I’ve got the absolute impetus to look at them closely.

SO -- dates may change, but my goal is still to have a TwinSet retreat in 2025. Feel free to discuss ideas below, I’ll gladly take them on board for consideration.

Professor Bunnyspinner looked out at the students dragging into the Detention classroom, “Good grief! You all look as if a Dementor sucked half the life out of you!”

A Slytherin student responded, “Dementors may be scary, but there’s nothing like the cold and gray of winter term in the British Isles to take away your will to live. I think I’ve even lost my interest in crafting!”

“That’s right, exclaimed a Ravenclaw, “We only have a few weeks left and I don’t seem to be able to finish anything.”

In unison, a Hufflepuff and Gryffindor student cry out, “Oh, NO! The Dementors have sucked the joy out of crafting!!!”

All three professors looked at each other and sighed.

“Okay, students, let’s think about this,” said Professor Twinsetjan. Remember when Dementors threatened to suck the life out of Sirius Black and Harry saved him by sending his Patronus to the rescue?”

“I think I know where you’re going with this Professor TSJ…and I like it!” said Professor Chinareader.

Professor TSJ continued,“You know it, Professor Chinareader! And it will give these students some practical experience using a charm that may save them from more than an unfinished sock.”

“Students, I want to see you all face your fear of failure head on by casting your own Patronus charm to remove whatever obstacle is keeping you from finishing your work. Get to it and report back, pronto!”

Professor Bunnyspinner chimed in with, “And please explain your work! We want to know what your Patronus is and how it helped drive off your inability to get things done.”

“Yes!” Professor Chinareader concluded. “Remember there are awesome points at stake!”

Prompt: Drive off those fearful Dementors with your own Patronus charm and finish your project, be it a new one or one that needs a repair or remodel to get it back to usefulness. Tell us things like how you used the charm, what your Patronus is, or how it succeeded in overcoming the Dementors.

Awesome Points are available in the Detention Classroom, so please let us know what was required for you to finish your project--including a rough estimate of how much yardage was completed (if applicable). If desired, you may also include any obstacles you may have overcome, the amount of time required for finishing, and any special skills or techniques you may have used.

Non-Ravelry crafts are always accepted for Detention. Please review the non-Rav craft guidelines before submitting your project. Please check the FAQs in post 1.

Please follow the Community Rules when turning in submissions and make sure your project counts as finished.

Please use the following template for your turn-in:

I got the idea to start this thread when my Ravelry mailbox suddenly filled with the gift of the 5 charming patterns that make up the Five Tenets Collection by Bronwyn the Brave Designs. Bronwyn has been a friend to the podcast over the years and I am charmed that she gifted me the collection.

The Five Tenets Collection of shawls is inspired by the five tenets of taekwondo. The five tenets are recited by the class, unifying them as students, but also as humans. Even though these tenets are rooted in martial arts, they are principles we all should live by: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. I may knit up a few of these in coming months, while practicing mindfulness of the tenet for which the shawl is named.

Re-Gifting Mini-Gifting Time is Here!!

Would you like to come play with us and swap some small gifts with fellow snakes? It’s a wonderful way to make a special connection with someone without spending much money.

Each month I’ll provide a link to a sign up form for the swap. When our swap includes physical items, the survey will let you indicate if you would like your recipient to be in your country or region to save on postage. I’ll assign recipients (as randomly as parameters permit) and you’ll receive an email from me with your recipient, their address (if needed), and any specific information you may need to help avoid things like allergies and the like.

Some very basic rules:

  1. Don’t forget to sign up on time (usually by the 10th each month)
  2. Do your best to mail or gift according to the theme of the month by the 25th of each month.
  3. Share the love you received by posting your thanks to your benefactor in this thread when you receive your gift. Photos are very much encouraged!
  4. The Mini-Swaps are open to sorted Slytherins.

The UNKAL has started!!!

The UNKAL is a contest for those who want to compete for prizes, but who need a break from knit-alongs (KALs) and crochet-alongs (CALs) and weave-alongs (WALs) and…and…and. To be part of the UNKAL, you simply choose a WIP and set it aside until the contest is over. By providing evidence that you’ve done this, you will get an entry into the prize drawing for some great loot!

To enter --

You must be a member of our podcast group on Ravelry.
You must post, before March 1st, a photo of the WIP you intend to put in timeout. On March 2nd this thread will be locked.
You may not knit or otherwise work on that WIP until June 1st, when the contest thread will be unlocked.
You must then edit your original post to add a new photo of the repentant WIP (showing that it is in the same condition in which you left it) along with something that shows proof of the date like a newspaper or magazine published on June 1st or later. You will have at least 2 weeks to do this, the thread will not be locked again until June 15th.
The drawing and prize award will take place for the next episode recorded after June 15th.

Contest eligibility -- As this is not a “comment only” contest, everyone who is a TwinSet Designs group member and follows the directions above is eligible to win.

Please note that winners with mailing addresses outside of the United States domestic mailing system may be offered a Ravelry pattern of their choice of approximately equal value to any physical prize they might have won, or an alternate prize sourced from near their locale. Unfortunately, international postage has become too expensive for mailing most prizes. The physical prize will either be held for a future contest or an additional winner for the UNKAL will be drawn.

I read about this on another forum, but thought this would be a punny place to bring it up. : )

Please use Twincrease in your projects, patterns and designs. You’re welcome to share Twincrease, but you must specifically refer to the technique as Twincrease and the originator as Assia Brill.

https://assiabrill.com/knitting-2/twincrease/?frame-nonce...

The description is fascinating. Having never done anything like it, I don’t get it.

Luckily, there is a video!

When changing needle size while knitting in the round, do I just start knitting with other size needle on the next stitch?

Thanks in advance ---

Hey everyone! I’ve made the move, and just got internet service today. Sadly, I will not be able to jump onto the zoom meeting today because I HAVE to track down a pet store since none of the grocery stores/walmart/etc carry my cat’s brand of litter, and I will not be changing that (especially right now!!)

Believe it or not, winter is coming! And we all need things to keep our hands warm, right? Well, mittens are the perfect thing and you’re invited to join in on knitting mittens along with other members of the TwinSet Designs group! But in this case, it will be the active knitting of said mittens that will warm you since the mittens themselves are rather tiny. Yes, we’re talking advent mittens! You can use any pattern you like, though several have already decided to work from the Mitten Garland Advent Calendar pattern. It’s lovely! Cast on anytime after October 1st, or consider joining us to cast on together in the virtual Zoom meeting on Thursday, October 1st at 3:30 PM EST. DM me with your email address if you need an invite!

Finish your mittens by the end of December to enter for a swell mid-winter prize! Chat away in this thread and I’ll start a FO thread later.

ETA: Lisa mlbateswi provided us with the author of the meditation Ellen shares in this episode. The author is kitty O’Meara, and Lisa offers several links below that lead you to her blog and some more information about her. She has granted permission to many to share -- and appears fine with others sharing who don’t have her specific permission. I have reached out to her for her specific permission and will be including this update in the next episode.

In which we (yes, we…twinsetellen joins me for much of the episode!) discuss, personal agency, making protective face masks, the SSK Swap to help fiber community vendors losing revenue due to festival cancellations, what’s happening in the patterns of Ellen’s life, a generous offer from Infinite Twist (you put $10 into the fiber economy and get free stuff from Cate in return), a meditation of the impact of social distancing and Covid-19, and possibilities for future gatherings.

Listen Here: Episode 106 -- Personal Agency

The meditation was shared with Ellen by her in-laws and is shared by the Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church and posted on their Facebook page.

Notes from Ellen on making masks (FYI: Ellen edited these notes a bit after Jan posted them):

Face mask recommendations – based on internet research, as flawed as that is, personal conversations with a few medical professionals, as limited as that may be, and my education in chemical engineering and microbiology. BUT, the latter notwithstanding, I am not a virus expert, I am not a mask expert, so please look at my comments as a place to start and do your own research! I offer no guarantees.

Masks will help a little, but as one friend commented, home-sewn masks are tantamount to wearing leather aprons at Chernobyl. They don’t replace washing hands, going out as little as possible, disinfecting your home frequently, keeping all social meetups on-line, not in person, and all the other things we are doing to flatten the curve. They are better than nothing, they aren’t the solution.

IF YOU HAVE A STOCKPILE OF N95 MASKS AT HOME, PLEASE DONATE ALL BUT A FEW TO YOUR LOCAL MEDICAL PERSONNEL OR SERVICE PROVIDERS WHO HAVE TO COME INTO CONSTANT CONTACT WITH OTHER PEOPLE, ALL FOR THE GREATER GOOD.

Filtration basics

· Porosity – smaller holes mean smaller particles are excluded

· Tortuosity – multiple layers mean even the tiniest particles have to travel around more threads and therefore have a greater chance of bumping a wall and getting stuck

· Fit – if there is a gap between the face, even the smallest pores won’t keep viruses from being inhaled.

Possible mask patterns:
https://mammacandoit.com/collections/sewing-patterns/prod...

Pros: Somewhat fitted, goes around chin and fitted to nose, at least a bilayer of material

Cons: The name! “Germ Free” suggests this will absolutely protect you, and no mask, not even an N95 is absolute. This is really dangerous, as someone will think it is truly a germ filter, and at two layers of cotton it certainly isn’t. Additionally, with no metal band at the top, it will not fit tightly to the nose.

https://www.canyonlandquilts.com/make-a-mask.htm

Pros: fitted to face, adjustable fit, pinch nose, pocket for filter

Cons: ear bands

Possible materials - lots of info on the internet, here are a few places to get started

https://www.wazoodle.com/blog/face-mask-fabrics/

https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-d...

https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/diy-homemade-mask-pro...

USE:

I’m uncomfortable making specific recommendations in print, so I’ll direct you to the CDC PPE recommendations as a place to get started. I will say, don’t pull down your mask to take a drink. Once it’s on, it’s on. Once it’s off, it needs to be washed.

Join the TwinSet Designs community in supporting fiber-related vendors who face losing a large piece of their possible revenues this year due to cancelled fiber festivals! And have some fun and make some connections at the same time. The Swap Swap Knit (SSK) Swap is designed to do all of this. In a nutshell, you will purchase from one of these vendors a swap package worth $25-35 (shipping excluded) to be shipped directly to your swap partner. You don’t even have to go to the post office!

Here are the details:
Sign up by April 15 by sending me a Ravelry direct message. Include in this message the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your mailing address
  • This statement…“I agree that by May 1st I will purchase a swap package worth $25-$35 to be shipped directly to my swap partner. I will maintain a record of my purchases and any shipment tracking information in the event my swap package is lost.”

Swap packages should total $25-$35 and may come from more than one vendor. This includes patterns purchased through Ravelry.

ETA!! Note that this swap means you can have an international swap partner, order from a vendor in their area, and NOT pay international shipping. I’ll try to have at least one resource from which you could order for every international region…if you sign up from outside of the United States and are aware of canceled events, do let me know so I can try to track down those vendors.

Deadlines: Sign up by April 15!! Purchase swap package by May 1st!!

Please add to this thread your suggestions of vendors who could be sources for this swap.

Feel free to chat, and do share pictures of your swap packages when you receive them!!

Let the games begin!!!

Our virtual knit together was great fun -- and a real boost to my spirits. I can confidently say that it did the same for others. We got together on Zoom with Cashman’s help. All we had to do was provide him with our email address and he made the rest easy.

Below is a link to a Doodle Poll. Please follow the link and take the poll. We’re trying to figure out the best time, that jives with his schedule and mine, for as many of us to gather again in early April. I’m putting the poll on Doodle so you can indicate more than one selection.

Scroll down the page to the table with the dates and times. Then tick each box for times that are good for you. You can indicate a “Yes, I can do this, but would prefer not to” by double-clicking the box. Be sure to scroll over to see all of the options.

I’ll leave the poll open till Monday so we have some planning time. In the meantime, please make sure Cashman has your email!

ETA: Not sure if the poll shows the time zone -- the two possible time slots each day are 3:30-5:00 PM EST and 6:30-8:00 PM EST.

A number of us were chatting in the Stitches United Thread about how to compensate our need for fiber friend contact in this new world of social distancing. We’ve decided to explore the potential for holding a virtual knit night using an internet meeting app.

First step is to see when people might be available to join in. Then we’ll collect information from those interested so we can set up the meeting in a way that allows for maximum participation. Who knows? Maybe we can have some games, or demonstrations/workshop, and maybe some prizes? This will depend on the interest level.

If you are interested, please join in the discussion below…and take any polls that get posted as soon as possible so you can help shape how this comes into being.

Should I place an orange SSK and an orange K2tog next to each other at the point with red purls on either side? Should there be a red purl stitch in the middle? Should I p2tog on either side in red with an orange knit stitch in the middle?

Can’t wrap my head around this one. Any suggestions would be welcome. I have no problem with ripping it back if it doesn’t work. That might actually be easier than swatching.

Anybody is welcome to chime in! Thanks!
