'To Be Honest' with oneself and others is the most difficult thing for us humans. It is because, in order to be honest, we must be courageous enough to take a look into the dark side of our psyche and confront our weaknesses—and expose them openly to the world—which is what we are most afraid of. My intention is having 'To Be Honest' to fuel a community of like-minded listeners to dare To Be Honest. To empower and inspire us all To Be Honest—so we can find harmony within ourselves and create healthy loving relationships.

From a psychological standpoint, understanding the difference between facts and interpretations is crucial for effective communication and interpersonal interactions.

Miscommunication often arises when people conflate facts with their interpretations. If we assume that our interpretation is the "truth", it can lead to incorrect conclusion and unnecessary conflict. For example, if you interpret a neutral comment from a colleague as criticism, you might respond defensively or even confrontationally, creating tension that wasn’t there to begin with.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about the key differences between facts and interpretations so to avoid unnecessary tensiion between friends, colleagues and family members. By developing awareness of the distinction between facts and interpretations, individuals can foster more effective communication, emotional intelligence, and healthier interpersonal relationships.

Coercive control is a pattern of behavior that a perpetrator uses to dominate, manipulate, and micro-manage the life of a victim. Unlike physical abuse, which can be more visible and identifiable, coercive control is often insidious and involves psychological, emotional, and sometimes financial abuse. This form of control systematically strips the victim of their autonomy, self-worth, and freedom, creating an environment of fear and dependence.

Is Coercive Control a Form of Abuse?
Yes, coercive control is indeed a form of abuse. In many jurisdictions, it is legally recognized as such, and laws have been enacted to criminalize it. It is often a component of domestic violence and can be just as damaging as physical abuse, if not more so, due to its pervasive and long-term effects on the victim’s mental and emotional health.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about the symptoms and signs of Coercive Control. Recognizing the signs of coercive control, seeking help, and finding a path to healing are crucial steps for anyone trapped in this type of abusive relationship. Support from friends, family, professionals, and legal systems can make a significant difference in helping victims reclaim their lives and freedom.

The series on the Universal Laws You Must Know is coming to an end with Dr BB reveals the twelve law which is the Law of Rhythm. The Law of Rhythm is also known as the Principle of Rhythm, this law teaches that everything in the universe moves in cycles and has a rhythm, like a pendulum swinging back and forth. These cycles and rhythms can be observed in nature, human life, emotions, and events. Understanding and aligning with these rhythms can lead to greater harmony and balance in life.

Understanding the Law of Rhythm:

  1. Everything is in constant motion: All things are subject to a natural flow or cycle. This can be seen in the changing seasons, the tides, and the phases of the moon.
  2. There is a natural ebb and flow: Just as the tide goes in and out, events in life have a rise and fall, and emotions have highs and lows.
  3. Balance is achieved over time: The rhythm brings balance and equilibrium. After a period of success, there might be a period of challenges, and vice versa.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about the Law of Rhythm and how you can apply the Law of Rhythm in daily life so you can enhance the quality of your life.

The series on Universal Laws You Must Know is slowly and steadily approaching the final three. In the past few weeks, Dr BB has explored the Law of Oneness (what is in one is in the whole), the Law of Cause and Effect, the Law of Vibration, the Law of Correspondence, the Law of Relativity, the Law of Attraction and the Law of Inspired Action (they go hand in hand), the Law of Polarity and the Law of Compensation.

In this Episode, Dr BB shares with you the Law of Gender. The Law of Gender posits that everything in the universe contains both masculine and feminine principles, which are essential for creation and balance.

Understanding the Law of Gender:

  • Masculine Energy is often associated with qualities such as logic, action, strength, and assertiveness. It represents the active, outward, and directive force.
  • Feminine Energy is linked to intuition, creativity, nurturing, and receptivity. It symbolizes the passive, inward, and receptive force.

The Law of Gender suggests that both these energies exist in all things and that harmony and creation come from the balance and interplay of these forces. This balance is crucial not only in nature but also in human endeavors and personal development.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about the Law of Gender, and the benefits of applying this law in your daily life.Listen, share, subscribe, and review this Episode.

Dr BB reveals there are mainly twelve Universal Laws that are worthwhile applying in our life. In the past few weeks, Dr BB has explored the Law of Oneness (what is in one, is in the whole), the Law of Cause and Effect, the Law of Vibration, the Law of Correspondence, the Law of Relativity, the Law of Attraction and the Law of Inspired Action (they go hand in hand), and the Law of Polarity.

In this Episode, Dr BB shares with her audience the Law of Compensation. This law is often associated with the concept of karma or cause and effect, suggests that individuals will be compensated or rewarded in proportion to the value they provide to others or to society as a whole. In essence, it implies that the universe has a way of balancing things out, rewarding individuals for their contributions. This law operates on the principle that every action has a consequence, whether positive or negative, and that individuals are responsible for their own outcomes.

According to the Law of Compensation, you reap what you sow. It means that what you put into the world, you will receive back. No matter how big or small the thing you give is, you will always be compensated for it.

This is most empowering because you are in the driver's seat of your life. You have the freedom to choose. Choose to join Dr BB in this Epsisode to learn more about the Law of Compensation, how to apply this law in your life and the benefits of doing so.

"Universal Laws of Mysticism" generally refers to fundamental principles or truths that govern the mystical or spiritual realm. These laws are thought to be universally applicable, transcending specific religious or spiritual traditions. They often relate to the nature of reality, consciousness, and the interaction between the physical and spiritual worlds.

In this series of the Universal Law, Dr BB has covered the Law of Oneness/Unity, Law of Cause and Effect, Law of Correspondence, and Law of Vibration. In this Episode, she continues with the Law of Relativity. The concept of the "mystical law of relativity" is not as formalised as the scientific theory of relativity in physics, but it's often found in spiritual, philosophical, and personal development contexts. It generally refers to the idea that reality and our experiences are relative to our perspective, beliefs, and context.

Come join Dr BB to learn a detailed explanation of this concept and how to apply it in daily life, along with its benefits.

Is self-worth and self-esteem the same? Dr BB explains some mental health practitioners believe they are the same, and use them interchangeably. However, Dr BB thinks differently: She agrees both self-worth and self-esteem play a crucial role in an individual's mental and emotional well-being, however, there are important key differences between the two.

Self-esteem is the subjective evaluation of one's own worthiness and value as a person based on external factors. Self-worth is a more global and stable form of self-esteem that comes from within, knowing and believing in one's worth as a person.

Both can have significant implications for mental health, relationships, and overall life satisfaction. Come join Dr BB to learn more about the development of low self-esteem versus low self-worth, its psychological underpinnings, and practical strategies for fostering a healthier sense of self.

In this Part 1 of Low Self-Worth versus Low Self-Esteem, Dr BB shares a case from her peer Dr Andrea Szasz from the South Pacific Private, in Sydney, NSW, Australia. The protagonist in the case shows you how lack of self-worth drives addiction and relational issues.

Dr BB quotes Dr Szasz:
"Children need to grow up in a predictable, safe and nurturing environment to develop a robust capacity to cope with life's challenges and to have fulfilling lives."

As Dr Peter Levine (trauma specialist) says: "Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness." Therefore, healing childhood trauma is a "must do", in order to grow an individual's self-worth.

Welcome to the 2nd Episode in 2024. In this Episode, Dr BB shares the disturbing findings of

  • Australia is failing to meet the UN's prohibition on violence against children.
  • All states and territories have failed to outlaw corporal punishment against children.
  • Researchers say there is no evidence that corporal punishment improves behaviour.

Dr BB defines corporal punishment is the use of physical force or physical pain as a means of disciplining or correcting the behavior of a person, especially a child. (The focus of this Episode is on the pratice of corporal punishment against children. )

It involves intentionally inflicting discomfort or pain, typically through actions such as spanking, slapping, kicking or hitting, with the intention of modifying the individual's behavior.

Dr BB further provides a comprehensive understanding of the short-term and long-term effects of corporal punishment, and she suggests alternative disciplinary strategies.

She illustrates, the meta-analysis by Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor (2016), on the short-term effects of corporal punishment practised on children, and the second longitudinal study exemplified by Afifi (2019).

This is the last Episode of the year 2023, and a New Year message from Dr BB to her global audience.

Dr BB dedicates the Jersey Boys' version of Auld Lang Syne to you all and your loved ones. Lyrics below might be slightly different from the traditional Auld Lang Syne:

Auld Lang Syne (The Jersey Boys)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

Traditional version was written by Robert Burns, described by Burns as 'a song of olden times'

Tis the season to be jolly, and it is also Dr BB's favourite time of the year.

Come join Dr BB to find out what the true Christmas spirit is all about.

Dr. BB also dedicates two songs to you, her global audience:
First song:
Grown -Up Christmas List by Pentatonix (featuring Kelly Clarkson)(This is also Dr BB's Grown-Up X'mas List)
Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies

Well I'm all grown up now
And still need help somehow
I'm not a child but my heart still can dream.

So here's my lifelong wish
My grown-up Christmas List
Not for myself, but for a world in need

No more lives torn apart,
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts

And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, oh
This is my grown-up Christmas List

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something lovely wrapped beneath the tree
Well heaven surely knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal a hurting human soul.

No more lives torn apart,
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts

And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas List

What is this illusion called?
The innocence of youth?
Maybe only in our blind belief
Can we ever find the truth

No more lives torn apart,
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts

And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, oh
This is my grown-up Christmas List
This is my only lifelong wish
This is my grown-up Christmas List.

Songwriters: David Foster, Linda Thompson. For non-commercial use only.

2nd Song:

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Branda Lee
Songwriters: Johnny Marks. For non-commercial use only.

Attachment theory is a psychological framework that was developed by the British psychologist John Bowlby in the mid-20th century. In this Episode Dr BB explains some of the attachment styles an individual may have. She also explains attachment theory suggests that the quality of early attachments influences an individual's ability to form and maintain relationships in adulthood. Securely attached individuals tend to have healthier relationships, while insecurely attached individuals may face challenges in forming and maintaining relationships.

"Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness," says Dr Peter Levine. One may say it is a brain indigestion problem.

Dr Britt Frank, a trauma specialist who is a Somatic Experiencing practitioner defines trauma (based on Dr Peter Levine's work) as anything that's too much, too fast, too soon, and she adds, " ... or not enough". Trauma is anything you got that you didn't need or anything that you didn't get that you did need.

The Acceptance Dr BB refers to is the need to be loved and embraced for who you are, with all your strengths and weaknesses, without conditions or expectations of change. For example: Consider a person who comes out as LGBTQ+ to their family. Accepting and supporting them without trying to change their sexual orientation or gender identity is crucial for their emotional well-being. Such acceptance fosters trust and a sense of belonging within the family. Children who feel accepted by their parents have better relationships not only with their family but also with peers.

Join Dr BB to find out more about your Acceptance need and whether this basic need has been fulfilled. If not, what are some possible consequences and find the courage to self-assess so you are aware in order to make positive changes.

Appreciation is the need to feel recognized, valued, and acknowledged for one's efforts and contributions.

Feeling unappreciated means that most likely your self-esteem and emotions could be affected, potentially leading you to feel bad and creating conflict in your relationship. In contrast, when feeling appreciated by your partner, children, or family members can be essential to maintaining strong bonds.

Dr BB shares that children need to feel valued so that they can gradually internalize self-valuing. We develop our sense of self from how we’re perceived by others when we are young. If we receive positive mirroring, we feel good about ourselves. Being valued and appreciated reinforces a positive sense of self-worth.

Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment, often leading to perceptual distortion, inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation, or what is broadly called irrationality. These biases are a result of how our brains process information, make decisions, and interpret the world around us. They can serve various functions and arise from a combination of evolutionary, cognitive, and social factors.

There are numerous cognitive biases that humans are susceptible to. Dr BB touches on ten common cognitive baises when we are not aware how they can affect one's counselling sessions. Although it is near impossible to eliminate all cognitive biases, Dr BB shares some techniques that can help mitigate their effects and promote more rational decision-making.

From a psychological perspective why are people afraid of the truth, therefore also afraid to tell the truth? There are myriad reasons to why people might be afraid of the truth and consequently reluctant to face it. Dr BB shares some common factors: Fear of consequences, fear of judgment or rejection, protecting one's self-image, and that people often have a desire to maintain a positive self-image or protect their reputation.

Come join Dr BB to find out more of some of the common reasons why "we can't handle the truth."

It's important to note that while fear of the truth and reluctance to tell the truth are common, they can have negative consequences in personal relationships, professional settings, and one's own psychological well-being. Dr. Dan Siegel's "Window of Tolerance" is a concept used to describe the optimal range of arousal in which a person can effectively process and respond to emotions and stress. When individuals are within their window of tolerance, they can handle everyday challenges and stressors without feeling overwhelmed or shutting down. According to Dr Siegel the "Window of Tolereance" has three zones: Optimal Zone, Hyperarousal Zone and Hypoarousal Zone. In this Episode, Dr BB explains the different zones and give practical examples of how we might show up in those different zones.

In life sometimes things go wrong, and when that happens, humans tend to cast blame on their perceived cause of the misfortune.  Where they cast that blame can be related (in many cases) to a psychological concept known as locus of control.

Locus of control refers to an individual's belief about the underlying causes of events in their lives. It relates to the extent to which people attribute outcomes to internal or external  factors. The concept was developed by Dr Julian Rotter, an American psychologist in the 1950s.

There are two types of Locus of Control:

  1. Internal Locus of Control, and
  2. External Locus of Control.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about these two types of Locus of Control, and to find out how your beliefs and attitudes impact your life.

From a psychological perspective, manipulation can be defined as the deliberate and skillful use of tactics and strategies to influence or control others for personal gain or to achieve specific outcomes. It involves subtly shaping or directing someone's thoughts, emotions, or behaviors in a way that serves the manipulator's interests, often without the other person's full awareness or consent.

While there may be innate tendencies or predispositions that can contribute to manipulative behavior, it's not to say that everyone is hardwired to manipulate.

However, it is true that manipulation is a common phenomenon in human interactions, and individuals can employ manipulative tactics to varying degrees.
Dr BB shares with her audience some of the more common  maladaptive manipulation tactics.

Dr BB acknowledges the following creators of the Theme from the musical TIME ... Time is a musical with a book and lyrics by Dave Clark and David Soames, music by Jeff Daniels, and additional songs by Hans Poulsen and David Pomeranz.

Dr BB wishes her audience to listen carefully to the lyrics spoken so beautifully by the late Sir Laurence Olivier. Know that "Your life is an expression of your mind. You are a creator of your own Universe, ..." , and know that you have been given the gift of choice! "It can be a blessing or a curse. It’s entirely up to you, for the quality of your life is brought about by the quality of your thinking. Think about that." Choose wisely!

~ The Theme from TIME ~

Stand before me on the Sign of Infinity all you of the Earth.
With the granting of the “Law of Probenation”
comes the application of change.
I will give you the key.
And with this knowledge, please realize,
comes the responsibility of sharing it.
I will show you the way (it’s very simple).

Throughout the Universe there is order.
In the movement of the planets…in nature…
and in the functioning of the human mind.
A mind that is in its natural state of order
is in harmony with the Universe,
and such a mind is timeless.
Your life is an expression of your mind.
You are a creator of your own Universe,
for as a human being you are “free to will”
whatever state of being you desire through the use of your thoughts and words.

There is great Power there.

It can be a blessing or a curse.

It’s entirely up to you, for the quality of your life
is brought about by the quality of your thinking.
Think about that.

Thoughts produce actions. Look at what you're thinking.
See the pettiness and the envy and the greed and the fear
and all the other attitudes that cause you pain and discomfort.
Realize that the one thing you have absolute control over is your attitude.
See the effect that it has on those around you,
for each life is linked to all Life and your words carry with them chain reactions like a stone that is thrown into a pond.
If your thinking is in order, your words will flow directly from the heart,
creating ripples of love.

If you truly want to change your world, my friends,
you must change your thinking.
Reason is your greatest tool.
It creates an atmosphere of understanding which leads to caring which is Love. Choose your words with care.
Go forth….with Love.

Have you ever noticed that people are quick to say they’re jealous of someone, but will not admit to being envious?

Dr. Brené Brown, a sociology research professor and author, has spoken extensively about the differences between envy and jealousy in her work on vulnerability, shame, and resilience.

In her book "The Gifts of Imperfection," Dr. Brown defines envy as "the feeling of wanting what someone else has" and jealousy as "the feeling of wanting to keep what we have from others."  She emphasizes that envy can be a positive force that motivates us to achieve our goals and strive for success, while jealousy is often rooted in fear and insecurity.

The terms "emotions" and "feelings" are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinct difference between them.

Emotions are complex psychological and physiological states that are often associated with specific bodily sensations, such as increased heart rate, sweating, or changes in facial expression. Some common emotions include happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust.

Feelings, on the other hand, are the conscious experience of an emotion. They are subjective and personal experiences that arise from our interpretation of emotions. For example, if you feel happy, you might experience feelings of contentment, joy, or pleasure. If you feel sad, you might experience feelings of despair, hopelessness, or grief.

Come join Dr BB to learn more about Dr Rachel Allyn's practical steps to developing emotional awareness, and why it is so important to know.

In this Part 2 of The Four Survival Archetypes, Dr BB explains the Saboteur archetype, and that self-sabotage can occur for a variety of reasons, including low self-esteem, fear of success or failure, and a desire to maintain the status quo. In some cases, people may self-sabotage as a way of avoiding the discomfort or anxiety that comes with taking risks or making changes.

Overall, the psychology of the Four Survival Archetypes is complex and multifaceted, and can involve a range of conscious and unconscious processes. Understanding and addressing these underlying psychological factors can be an important step in overcoming our self-sabotaging patterns and achieving one's goals.

In this Part 1 of The Four Survival Archetypes, Dr BB uses Caroline Myss' teachings. Myss has written extensively on archetypes, including the survival archetypes. She believes that archetypes are universal patterns of behavior and thought that are deeply embedded in the human psyche. According to Myss, these archetypes are not just limited to the realm of psychology or mythology, but are present in every aspect of our lives.

The survival archetypes, in particular, are believed to represent the basic needs and instincts of human beings. Myss teaches that the four survival archetypes represent the core aspects of our human nature that we rely on for survival and success. By working with these archetypes, we can gain insight into our own behavior and thought patterns, and use this knowledge to improve our lives, and be better humans.

Do you really understand what codependent relationship is?  What a codependent relationship looks like? Many people think that codependent is the same as being clingy.  It is not because the latter is much less extreme.  A clingy person may “hang around” a bit too much, a codependent person believes that they can’t be alone and don't want to be.

A codependent individual yearn to feel as if they are needed, even if it means leaning entirely into another for physical, emotional, and psychlogical well being.  More often than not, this exaggerated sense of neediness leads to the person compromising not only their self-esteem and self-worth but that of their partner as well.

Come join Dr BB to find out more about the common signs of a codependent relationship, how does it develop, and possible treatments.

In this final Part 3 of Dr Margaret Paul's 6 Steps to Inner Bonding, Dr BB summarises this process that teaches us how to truly take responsibility for ourself.  The bottom line is: the only person that is responsible for meeting our needs (now that you're an adult) is the one that is staring back at us in the mirror.  When you practise these steps, soon you'll realise that you're indeed responsible for meeting your own needs and if you were to take that responsibility, you would stop exploding in anger and or use addiction to numb your feelings.

Dr BB also shares that on the emotional level, it is important for us to feel all of our feelings.  When we have a feeling, we have to take responsibility for that and when we don't that's one form of self-abandonment.

Come join Dr BB to learn to heal your self-abandonment, and to love youself more.

Self-abandonment? What is self-abandonment? To Be Honest has an episode on self-abandonment last year, please go back to the archive and enjoy Episode 93 - Self-Abandonment (A Story of Jack and Jill) after listening to this one.

There are myriad reasons why relationships are so challenging and at times it is extremely taxing. According to Dr Margaret Paul, Dr Erika Chopich and Dr BB, the one cause of relationship challenges is - Self-Abandonment.

In this 2-part Episode, Dr BB dives deep into this topic. She also introduces Dr Paul's 6 Steps to Inner Bonding so you can learn and practise the skills to heal self-abandonment and love yourself authentically.

Do you doubt yourself often? Do you hide parts of yourself i.e. feelings, beliefs, and ideas etc.? Are you a people pleaser? Do you avoid feeling your painful feelings? What is your choice of "drug"? i.e. sugar: shopping; social media; attention; work; etc.? Do you know what your needs and wants are in order to lead a happy, healthy and authentic life?

We abandon ourselves whenever we behave in ways that we don’t value ourselves. When we don’t act in our own best interest, and when we don’t encourage and nurture ourselves. Notice how many of the above examples of self-abandonment ring true for you.

"You just can't hate yourself into being better and you can't hate other people into it." - Dr Brene Brown

Shame is a complex emotion and some of us even feel shameful to be feeling shame. By popular demand, Dr BB reveals the difference between shame vs guilt, and other uncomfortable emotions based on the research by Dr Brene Brown.

According to Dr Brown, "Shame is the fear of being unworthy of love, connection and belonging, and the absence of love and condition and belonging as a human being, and there's always suffering."

Compare to guilt, shame, is a lot more damaging according to Brown, as it says "you are a bad person", and as a social species, "shame is death".

Dr BB advises that with the awareness of these different types of emotions when we are feeling them, and to talk about them, it helps to diminish the power of shame. Healthy guilt is to say to ourself: 'Yes, I made a terrible choice and hurt someone, but I'm not a bad person. It was a bad thing that I did, and I don't like to be that person, so I am going to fix it and make amends."

The APA - American Psychological Association, they define Emotion Regulation: "the ability of an individual to modulate an emotion or set of emotions." Explicit emotion regulaton and implicit emotion regulation.
"Explicit emotion regulation requires conscious monitoring, using techniques such as learning to construe situations differently in order to manage them better, changing the target of an emotion (e.g., anger) in a way likely to produce a more positive outcome, and recognising how different behaviors can be used in the service of a given emotional state.
Implicit emotion regulation operates without deliberate monitoring; it modulates the intensity or duration of an emotional response without the need for awareness. Emotion regulation typically increases across the lifespan. Also called emotional regulation."In this Episode Dr BB teaches her audience the important skill of emotional regulation. A common definition of resilience is the ability to cope with and recover from setbacks. People who can remain calm in the face of disaster have resilience, and people with psychological resilience (i.e. growth mindset) are able to use their skills, strengths and tools to respond to life's challenges, which can include those related to: Death of a loved one (i.e. during the pandemic); divorce; financial issues; illness; job loss; medical emergencies and natural disasters.

In this Episode, Dr BB shares with her audience one young lady's inspirational resilient story.  Her story shows us not to fall into despair or hide from issues by facing life's difficulties head-on.

Dr BB also emphasizes that people with resilience do not experience less distress, greif, or fear than other people do.  The key is to use healthy coping skills and healthy mindset she introduces as the "growth mindset" to handle life's challenges in ways that foster strength and personal growth.  Hence, these resilient people emerge stronger than they were before.

Who can deny the opporunity to boost resilience, right? So, come join Dr BB to have a listen, share, subscribe and review this Episode.

Making outer and inner changes is an important step to take for love and relationship addicts on their road to recovery.  Taking recovery one day at a time is usually an easier way for addicts to deal with their addiction, and makes the process feel more achievable.  Naturally, time plays an important role in the healing process and according to Dr BB, addicts must not quit their support system (i.e. therapy and/or support group) prematurely.  Much time must pass and much work must be done in order for the addict to overcome maladaptive behavior patterns, thoughts and distorted beliefs.

The psychological theory of attachment was first described by John Bowlby, a psychoanalyst who researched the effects of separation between infants and their parents (Fraley, 2010).  Then in the 1970's, psychologist Mary Ainsworth expanded greatly upon Bowlby's original work.

In this Episode, Dr BB shares with audience Bowlby's original finding of the three ways how infants behave upon reunion with the parents: secure attachement; anxious-avoidant; anxious-resistant attachment; and in later years, researchers added a forth attachment style to the list: the disorganized attachment (Kennedy & Kennedy, 20040.

It is easy to see from Dr BB's descriptions of behaviors and emotion regulation how attachment style in childhood can lead to relationship problems in adulthood.  Indeed, it is clear how these attachment styles in childhood lead to attachment types in adulthood.  It definitely benefits the audience to further explore their own attachment styles so to be aware of their own behaviours and how they affect their close relationships.

Are you a TCK? Do you know any TCKs? Are you familiar with the term 'third culture kid'?  The term TCK (or ATCK) is not universally well-known, however, it is used to describe children who have been raised in a diverse cultural environment that is different to one or both of their parents.  Dr BB shares that people are working their families to countries with which they have no natural affinity, and out of this has grown a new community --- Third Culture Kid.
In recent years, with the increase numbers of refugees and immigrants worldwide, Dr BB encourages us all to not stay ignorant of this important and fast growing community.  We need to learn and understand how unique these children are, so that our kids who are not TCKs can learn to include and welcome them into our homes, schools and playgrounds.  Learn to be inclusive and kind toward this community of unique children.

As a Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Counsellor, Dr BB often works with couples (particularly cross-cultural couples) who long for healthier, more loving relationships, yet, they find themselves overly focused on seeking approval from others and/or meeting another person's needs, leading to frustrations and resentment.  More often than not, they are dissatisfied with their partner's ability to "meet" and provide them with the love they so desire.

Why does this happen? Dr BB's view on this is relating to Self-Abandonment.  What does it mean to abandon yourself? And why does Self-Abandonment wreak so much havoc in relationships?  Are you aware if you have any self-abandoning behaviours?

Dr BB introduces Spiritual Psychology so to answer the question: How Beliefs Create Our Reality?  The French philosopher, and Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin said, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience." He thought deeply on the meaning of our existence and relationship with the Divine.

Dr BB also asks, "What does it mean to be Spiritual Beings having a human experience and how does it relate to our everyday lives?" Spiritual is not the same as religious. When some one is  spiritual it does not mean one is religious.  Spirituality is your own very personal relationship with the Divine, however, that may manifest in your life.

Dr BB also explores the basic Principles of Spiritual Psychology, which are universal truths cutting across the plethora of religious dogmas which exist in our world today.  It is vital for humans to recognize the power of love to heal because Spirit is love. When love (Spirit), the most powerful force in the Universe, is applied to hurt, we heal. It is simple yet profound.

This is the last of a three part series on Healthy Boundaries Healthy Relationships.  So, if you haven't listened to Episode 80 (Part 1) and Episode 81 (Part 2) in this series, Dr BB suggests it might be a good idea to do so now.

In this Episode, Dr BB walks through the 5 steps to having and setting healthy boundaries. She explains each step and gives several examples of how each step works.  Dr BB explains “setting boundaries” is like putting stakes in the ground to mark where someone’s property starts and stop. Of course, these little wooden stakes can be pulled out of the ground at any moment by almost anyone. Our boundaries can be just like that: we put stakes in the ground and anyone can come along and moves them. Sometimes, that someone is US!

Dr BB further explains why this can happen, and the importance of owning our boundaries in order to sustain them.  The 5 steps to discovering and setting your boundaries is reasonably easy, as long as we are committed to practising the skills of "setting boundaries".
The key is to listen to yourself and honour what you hear - the "still small voice" inside you!

Thank you for respecting who I am and the work I have shared with you in this Podcast - To be Honest. To Be Honest has been up and running since September 2020, the year of the COVID and sixteen months on, we are still being affected by it.
I feel blessed in many ways, and of course, I am no exception, I experienced two weeks of hotel quarantine when I choose to move from Sydney to Brisbane in the height of COVID. It is also because of COVID that it pushed me to start publishing To Be Honest, with the intention to help people to understand mental health and their own psyche.

I know it must not be easy to open your heart like you have and accept some things that were hard for you to accept in the beginning, but you stick with it! And you keep coming back each week, so I thank you all the more for doing so.
This invisible bond is unbreakable and I whole heartedly know: when united we will be able to get through anything. Thank you for creating our strong To Be Honest tribe, and although I have not met a lot of you in person, I thank you all the same as those whom our paths have crossed, and still. My dear global audience, from near and far, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and let us continue to find the courage to invest in our mental health by talking about it, paying attention to it, and seek help if need be.
Keep those emails coming and I promise I will continue to serve you all better in 2022. Allow me to wish you and your loved ones a very healthy (both physical and mental), happy and safe 2022. Until next year, learn heaps and find the courage to be honest."

Self-awareness is the experience of one's own character traits and skills.  It is not to be confused with consciousness in the sense of qualia.  While consciousness is being aware of one's environment and body and lifestyle, self-awareness is the recognition of that awareness.  In other words, self-awareness is how an individual consciously knows and understands their own character, feelings, motives and desires.
Dr BB explains both self-reflection and rumination are examples of adaptive behaviours, so it is not a question of whether they are good or bad, but whether they are useful for us.  By adapting self-reflective behaviours, it most likely will help us cultivate or strengthen self-awareness.
Self-reflection is associated with the ability to exercise more control over one’s feelings and behavior and generally to make better decisions in terms of how to respond. It is associated with the ability to learn and change. Conversely, rumination is a key contributor to mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The origin of schemas was first introduced in 1923 by developmental psychologist Jean Piaget.  He suggested that during cognitive deveolpment we utilized schemas to help us learn, understand and manage the world around us.  Dr BB further explains Piaget's idea that different schemas are supposed to be mentally applied in appropriate situations to help people both comprehend and interpret information.  However,  if not applied appropriately, and more importantly, if we are not aware of our own prejudices, or maladaptive schemas, the danger is they can very well hinder the way we perceive others and the world.

In the past, hoarding has been considered as a subcategory of OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  OCD is a mental health disorder that is characterized by obsessive thoughts, most typically about bad things that could happen to the sufferer or one's loved ones.  The obsessive thoughts are followed by compulsive actions that one believes will keep the thoughts in check or prevent bad things from happening.  However, in recent years, research is finding distinctions between the two and has led the new, fifth edition of the DSM - Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to include a separate disgnosis for Hoarding Disorder.

In this Episode, Dr BB educates her audience on this fairly new mental disorder - Hoarding Disorder.  She explains what compulsive hoarding is and the difference between OCD and HD (based on the DSM-V definition.)

In order to appreciate the effects of divorce on children, a person must appreciate what divorce does to adults.  Dr BB shared with her audience the book, Crazy time: Surviving Divorce and Building a New Life , writtenby Abigail Trafford. In her book, Abigail describes divorce as a "savage emotional journey," where a person ricochets between the past (the loss) and the uncertainty of the future.

For obvious reasons, divorce traumatises children.  They are often concerned with their own security, not with their parent's happiness, and rightly so.

Majority of us are not aware that our feelings are a direct result of our thoughts.  Dr BB has often mentioned in her podcast: Thoughts come from feelings, feelings come from beliefs, and beliefs are either learned or from personal experience.
When we are not aware of this knowledge, we tend to believe that our feelings are a result of extenal events, and we also believe that other people make us feel our feelings.  When that happens, we blame others for our uncomfortable feelings, and we fail to take responsibility for our own thoughts that lead us to feeling what we feel.
Therefore, it is important to realise and understand that there has to be a thought before there can be a feeling.
