In this special AAPI Heritage Month episode of Harbour for the Arts, Bri Cooper takes listeners on a vibrant journey into the world of Korean opera — an art form that blends Western operatic structure with Korea’s own deep-rooted vocal traditions. Bri opens the episode by reflecting on the beauty and complexity of AAPI artistry, reminding us that Asian and Pacific Islander creativity is global, innovative, and grounded in centuries of storytelling. She explores how Korean opera embodies this legacy through cultural preservation, cross-cultural innovation, and the emotional power of the human voice.

The episode continues with a look at the modern boom of Korean opera in the 21st century. Bri highlights the remarkable surge of creativity after the year 2000, when more than 140 new operas premiered in Korea. She discusses standout works like Chunhyangjeon, Prince Hodong, Cheoyong, and Hwang Jini, emphasizing how these operas serve as cultural diplomacy, artistic identity, and bridges between Korea and the world.

Bri also reflects on why Korean opera matters for AAPI artists today. Representation in classical music is still evolving, and Korean opera offers visibility, new repertoire, cultural connection, and opportunities for storytelling beyond the traditional European canon. For Bri, who is a Bahamian-American mezzo-soprano and cultural diplomat, this conversation is deeply personal — a reminder that music can build bridges across communities and generations.

To close the episode, Bri shares resources for listeners who want to explore Korean opera further, including the Korea National Opera, the National Theater of Korea’s Changgeuk Company, the UNT Korean Opera Aria Anthology, and online archives of pansori and changgeuk performances. She ends with a heartfelt reminder that AAPI artistry is vast, ancient, and deserving of celebration, and that the human voice remains one of the most powerful tools we have for connection.

If this episode inspires you, Bri invites you to share it with a friend and visit bricooper.net for extended content and behind-the-scenes insights. As always, she encourages listeners to stay creative, stay curious, and stay connected.

Reaching the 100th episode of Harbour for the Arts feels surreal in the best way. When I started this show, I was recording in closets, cars, and any quiet corner I could find, just hoping someone out there would connect with what I had to say. A hundred episodes later, I can look back and see how every chaotic moment, every heartfelt message from listeners, and every creative risk shaped this community into something real and powerful. This episode is my chance to celebrate that journey — the growth, the lessons, and the joy of showing up as an artist week after week.

In the extended version, I open up even more about the behind‑the‑scenes moments that changed me, the episodes that almost didn’t happen, and the ways this podcast has held me through some of my biggest transitions. I also share what’s coming next as we step fully into the video era. If you’re loving this celebration, the full extended video episode — with behind‑the‑scenes, bonus stories, and my personal message to the Harbour community — is available exclusively for subscribers. Join my subscriber club for only $15 per month and get extended podcast episodes, blogs, videos, and discounts to my upcoming shows.

Curtain Call & Coffee Breaks: When the Stage Isn’t Your Whole Story

In this lighthearted and empowering episode, I invite listeners to explore the emotional and creative shifts that come with stepping away from the stage. Through personal stories, playful insights, and practical advice, I share what it feels like to transition from a life of performance to a life of purpose beyond the spotlight. I reflect on the funny and unexpected moments that signaled my own pivot—from rehearsing pitch decks to finding joy in quiet creativity—and offers five playful signs that you might be ready for your own offstage chapter. Learn how to build a “creative life portfolio,” embrace new roles, and redefine success on their own terms. Bri reminds us that artistry is portable—it lives in our choices, our voice, and our everyday brilliance.

A cozy shoutout to Thrive Market and I invite brands and creatives to sponsor Harbour for the Arts. Whether you’re a performer in transition or a creative soul seeking clarity, this episode is a warm, witty reminder that your story doesn’t end when the curtain falls—it simply changes scenes.

Organizing after the holidays and before the New Year can help set a positive tone for the upcoming months and create a sense of clarity and renewal. Here are some tips to help you declutter, prioritize, and prepare for the year ahead:

Reflect and Review: Take some time to reflect on the past year, acknowledging your accomplishments, lessons learned, and areas for growth. Review your goals and priorities, and identify what worked well and what needs adjustment as you plan for the New Year.

Declutter and Organize: Start by decluttering your living and workspaces, including holiday decorations, unwanted gifts, and any items that no longer serve a purpose or bring joy. Organize your belongings, create designated spaces for essential items, and consider donating or recycling items you no longer need.

Set Clear Intentions: Define your priorities and set clear intentions for the New Year. Whether it's personal development, career goals, health and wellness, or relationships, articulate your vision and establish actionable steps to help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year.

Create a Plan: Develop a plan or schedule to help you stay organized and manage your time effectively. Break down your goals into manageable tasks, set deadlines, and establish routines that align with your priorities and support your overall well-being.

Lets talk about a few ways you can practice the second principal of Kwanzaa Kujichagulia as a practice in our own musicianship and creativity. Practicing Kujichagulia (self-determination) in music involves asserting one's cultural identity, creativity, and self-expression within the musical realm. This can be achieved by:

  • Creating music that reflects your cultural heritage and personal experiences.
  • Composing and performing music that empowers and uplifts your community.
  • Collaborating with like-minded artists to promote self-determination and cultural pride through music.
  • Using music as a platform to address social issues and advocate for self-determination and empowerment.
  • Fostering mentorship and educational programs to pass on musical traditions and encourage self-expression within your community.

This year I honestly was not feeling it. It took me a long time to get into the holiday spirit. This includes shopping! Instead of walking through the malls, being stressed out even more. I took the unconventional approach by doing everything on line and either having it delivered to me or to the store. SO EASY. I then realized that it took a lot of stress off of me and created more space for me to enjoy spending time doing things I enjoyed.

As Women's History Month and National Reading Month comes to a close, it's important to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements of women throughout history. One woman whose story deserves recognition is Shirley Verrett, an African American opera singer who broke barriers in the music industry.

Verrett's life and career are chronicled in the book "I Never Walk Alone: The Autobiography of Shirley Verrett," co-written by today's guest, Dr. Christopher A. Brooks. This inspiring memoir details Verrett's journey from her humble beginnings in Louisiana to her rise as one of the most celebrated opera singers of her time. Throughout her career, Verrett faced many challenges, including racism and discrimination. She was often told that she could not perform certain roles because of the color of her skin. Despite these obstacles, Verrett persevered, paving the way for future generations of African American singers.

As an internationally-recognized biographer, Christopher Brooks has produced several book-length manuscripts including I Never Walked Alone: The Autobiography of an American Singer (with the late Shirley Verrett, John Wiley 2003 now available in Kindle version, 2011); Follow Your Heart: Moving with the Giants of Jazz, Swing and Rhythm and Blues (with Joe Evans, University of Illinois Press 2008; second paperback edition, February 2011), and Dangerous Intimacy: Ten African American Men with HIV (with Christopher Coleman, Linus Publications, June 2009).

In "I Never Walk Alone," Verrett shares her struggles and triumphs with candor and grace. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of breaking down barriers. The book is filled with behind-the-scenes tales of this diva's great performances, roles, and collaborations, offering insight into her stormy personal relationships as well as her private struggles and critical decisions. Featuring forewords by such figures as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Zubin Mehta, and Claudio Abbado, this richly detailed book paints a vivid picture of a magnificent survivor and an indelible artist known around the world as the black Maria Callas. Her story reminds us that, even in the face of adversity, we can achieve great things.

Dr. Brooks provides valuable insight and context throughout the book. His contributions shed light on the cultural and historical significance of Verrett's accomplishments, and his collaboration with Verrett gives readers a deeper understanding of her story.

As we celebrate the end of Women's History Month, let us remember the trailblazing women who have made a significant impact in their fields, like Shirley Verrett. Let us honor their achievements and continue to strive for a more equitable and just world for all.

Become a Box Office Circle subscription member for access to the video with a presentation about the life of Shirley Verrett by Dr. Brooks!

I am so excited to speak with international tenor Jordan Pitts. Welcome to Harbour for the Arts! Where opera, the performing, and creative arts, meet lifestyle". When was the last time you played? I'm talking about summer camp or recess played? As a classical singer, there is so much value in being creative through your craft. Today I am talking to Bert Menninga. He is not a performer, but more a lover of the arts!

While watching his TikToks I started asking myself one question, where do opera and creativity merge? I did some research and was intrigued by Rober Foster's research about creativity. I decided to take that a step further and asked my guest about how he took the concept of opera a step further by creating a very innovative platform designed with just paper and pen. He creates 10-second vignettes about opera, art songs, and orchestral works.

I hope you enjoy it.

🌸Episode: The performing and creative arts space has been one of the hardest hit sectors According to America for the Arts Artists performing and creative artists are among the most severely affected workers by the COVID-19 crisis. 62% have become fully unemployed. Nationally, our sector is expected to lose $50.6 billion in income in 2020. Findings are based on 19,600 survey responses. 94% of performing and creative artists report income loss.

  • 79% experienced a decrease in creative work that generated income (61% a “drastic decrease”).
  • 66% are unable to access the supplies, resources, spaces, or people necessary for their work.
  • And yet, 75% report their artistic practice has been used to raise morale, create community cohesion, or lighten the COVID-19 experience of the community.

Now more than ever it is important that performing artists have multiple streams of income including starting a business.
