Lauren Canaday studied at Virginia Tech, where she earned a BA in economics and MS in statistics. She briefly worked as civilian Army statistician before stumbling on her entrepreneurial passion—she pivoted to doing hair and running hair salons for the next decade. Teaching business classes and consulting with salon owners inspired Lauren to do additional graduate work in Organization Development at American University in 2018. When a seizure disorder diagnosis at the age of 34 required her to rethink personal/professional balance, she returned to the federal space. She spent the past five years working and consulting with federal agencies and contractors as a transformational change and customer experience specialist.

Lauren caught COVID-19 in December 2023. COVID led to myocarditis and worsened her well-controlled epilepsy. Two months later, she became one of the lucky few to survive an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest—thanks to her husband calling 911 and starting CPR immediately. Her recovery proved difficult, and she left full-time employment to focus on doctor visits, daily basics, and one of her chief passions: writing.

Last summer, Lauren started a newsletter called Cognitively Intact on Substack in which she transparently shares her recovery journey. On December 1, she released a memoir called Independence Ave: How Individualism Killed Me and Community Brought Me Back about facing chronic illness, burnout, and the lifeshattering impacts of cardiac arrest. A Reddit AMA one random December Monday created a surprising worldwide platform, as reporters and organizations reached out wanting to know more about Lauren's near-death experience. She hopes that sharing her cardiac arrest story will inspire others to learn CPR and to better address needs of survivors living with chronic illness.

Cognitively Intact- Check out her Substack

As few as 6% of those who suffer sudden cardiac arrest at home survive. I'm one of them. Here, I share the brightest and darkest sides of survivorship and explore what kicks in when science leaves you hanging. Themes: epilepsy, chronic illness, PTSD.

Every now and then, you bump into someone that is on a similar journey, maybe the same one. I "bumped" into Hendrith while researching for an article I was working on. Hendrith has a passion for nature and what we can learn in terms of how to be efficient and effective. I love a comment he makes about "there is no waste in nature" really makes one think.

We touch on many topics, from what is ESG, different types of capital, what can we learn from nature and why productivity is critical to business success. The danger in not evolving and not learning is an interesting part of the conversation.

Hendrith Vanlon Smith Jr is the Managing Partner & CEO of Mayflower-Plymouth Capital LLC, a small investment management firm based in Arlington Virginia. As someone who is passionate about business and entrepreneurship, Hendrith has also served on the Board of Directors of Dave’s House and the Advisory Board for the City of Kissimmee, and has authored several books on business and economics. Having a love for both investing and nature, he’s pioneered a new set of investment principles which models natural ecosystems and applies lessons from nature toward portfolio management — he calls ‘Permaculture Investing.’ Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bethune-Cookman University in 2012, completed Masters Degree coursework toward an MSW at Howard University, and earned a Certificate in Program Strategy from Stanford University. He’s also the proud father to a four year old daughter named Chaya.

I was on the edge of my seat during this conversation, this is a topic that I have never addressed on the show, but think about. Veteran suicides are at an alarming rate, suicides in general are at an alarming level. Brooke does a great job covering parts of the mental health conversation.
I hope your takeaway from this episode is to be more aware of your mental health, having grace for others that are struggling with various mental health issues.

Brooke received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL in 2009. Her nursing experience has primarily been in mental health, and she has close to 10 years of experience working in residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient eating disorder treatment centers. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2018 and is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. As a nurse practitioner, Brooke provided outpatient care at a community mental health clinic treating individuals struggling with mental illness across the lifespan prior to rejoining the McCallum Place team. Brooke has always been incredibly passionate about helping individuals struggling with mental illness and feels privileged to be a part of their journey towards recovery.

Who do you look at as someone that has helped form who you are? Well, other than my Dad and family, Col James Bowers comes to mind first for me. As a sophomore in high school I meet Col Bowers, he amazed me with his career and high expectations. I was a little surprised how I reacted when I heard the news of his passing. Mad at myself for not staying in touch with him. However very grateful to have known him and learned from him. RIP Col.

Colonel (Airborne Ranger) James M. Bowers

U.S. Army Retired

Jim Bowers, also known as "Ranger Jim" and "Cowboy Jim", was born in a coal mining camp named Cassville, in West Virginia on August 14, 1930. The Angels recruited Jim for their “Ranger Patrol” on October 1, 2022 at his home in Spring Harbor, Columbus, Georgia. He was 92.

Jim was a strong and dedicated family man who was blessed with a sweet, beautiful and totally dedicated Army wife, Kathryn Gee Bowers, affectionately known as "Kacky". Jim and Kacky were married at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1956, and together they raised two exemplary sons, Jim Junior and Clarke.

After graduating from the University of West Virginia where he received a regular Army commission from ROTC, Jim served thirty proud years on active duty and commanded at each level from Platoon through Brigade. He served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was immensely proud of his Airborne Wings and Ranger Tab, and his favorite and most rewarding assignment was Director of the Ranger Department from 1973-1977.

During his military career Jim received many service awards to include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal "V" with 24 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge and Master Parachutist Badge. Jim also attended numerous military schools during his career to include the Army War College.

Upon retiring from active duty, he taught JR ROTC at Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia for ten years and then moved to Florida in 1993. He returned to Columbus in 2006.

In addition to his love for his family and country, Jim had a passion for the great outdoors and had a special adoration for animals. Some of his favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, playing and hunting with his dogs, riding and driving his horses, water skiing and flying small airplanes.

Jim is survived by his two sons James Bowers, Jr. of Henderson, Nevada and Clarke Bowers of Dawsonville, Georgia.

Jim Junior and Clarke are planning a wonderful, uplifting Celebration of Life, for both Jim and their mother Kacky, which will be announced in the near future.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Paws Humane, 4900 Milgen Road, P.O. Box 8964, Columbus, Georgia 31908.

I’ll add Telarus in there.

As a comedian, his credits include Comedy Central, VH-1, opening stints for stars such as Celine Dion and Keith Urban and his own Drybar comedy special, filmed during the pandemic and appropriately titled You Can’t Quarantine Laughter.

This is part two in my series on IoT.  Interesting conversation from an agents perspective on areas you need to consider.  What model is best for you and do you have a go to market strategy?

We discuss how IoT can save a lot of money and solve problems that were not even recognized.  Help business increase the bottom line while becoming more efficient and effective. Touch on how it creates revenue streams as well.  The analytics that can come from IoT solutions have their own value.

We address the question, "Why should an agent care about IoT?"

Three things to focus on:
Know who you are
Focus on the customer needs
Partner with the right resources

This was a cool 30 min discussion over several Items.
1.   What’s your opinion on the future of society when it comes to social skills, conflict resolution and being able to make new friends?

  1. Back when you worked in the corporate world as a marketing pro, at what point did you know you were destined for bigger things?

  2. I am very interested in the Internet of Things and how it helps add value to people lives.  Do you have a particular IoT solution you believe is a game changer?

  3. Considering the recent buzz around Big Tech, in your opinion, what’s the future look like for Social Media, will FB be replaced by something new, the way FB replaced MySpace? When Parlor was presented as an alternative to Twitter, it was removed.

  4. What advice do you have for those that relied on “in person” events such as expo’s, conferences and meetings to grow their network now that the pandemic has put a halt to most of those options?

This is another multi faceted episode that takes us from discussing Veterans day, the military spouse, remote working and the place technology plays in it. Kendall's story is repeated thousands of times throughout the military. For recruiters, focus in on the community of military spouses, it is rich in talent, experience and an applicant pool that has been overlooked. For Employers, are you harnessing technology to its fullest?
