Why do we keep doing the very things we don't want to do? Saint Paul asked the same question, and so does every one of us. In this meditation, Fr Gavan explores the Church's answer: original sin, the seed that tilts us toward what we most regret. Drawing on Paul's letter to the Romans, a striking scene from The Thin Red Line, and the hidden struggles of Peter, Augustine, Jerome, Teresa of Avila, and Francis de Sales (who once dug his fingernails into the underside of a desk to stay calm), he offers three pieces of good news: we can improve, every saint fought the same fight, and our very struggle is what teaches us humility. A gentle reminder that holiness is always hard won, and that your struggle is not a sign something is wrong with you. It is the path.

Do you ever think about what itβs like for other people to be around you? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on the life of the apostles after the Resurrection, and how they lived closely together, trying to recreate something of the presence of Christ among them. From this, he draws a simple and practical question: how do we make life better for the people around us? Looking at the example of Christ, he points to four concrete ways we can do this: giving our time, showing affection, being considerate in how we speak and act, and bringing a spirit of cheerfulness into our daily interactions. Do you ever reach the end of Holy Week and feel like you missed it? Do you find it difficult to forgive those who have hurt you? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on Jesusβ teaching that we must forgive not seven times but seventy-seven times. Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, he shows how easily we forget the immense mercy God has shown us and how quickly we refuse that same mercy to others. Why does God allow us to experience temptation? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on the Gospel account of Jesus being led into the wilderness and tempted by the devil. By allowing Himself to face temptation, Christ shows us both His solidarity with our weakness and the path to overcoming it. Temptation itself is not sin, but it reveals the desires that pull at our hearts and the areas where we need Godβs help. Christmas brings us face to face with tenderness, beauty, and joy β and then, almost without warning, the Church places before us the martyrdom of St Stephen. In this meditation, Fr Gavn reflects on why the Church does this so deliberately: to remind us that the Child in the manger and the man on the Cross are one and the same. Stephen shows us that real love is never sentimental, but always costs something, and that following Christ means learning to imitate what we worship. This reflection invites us to let our Christmas joy be purified and deepened into a love willing to give itself completely.

What does it mean to call Jesus βEmmanuel β God with usβ? In this final O Antiphon, Fr Gavan reflects on the climax of Adventβs longing: the God who is no longer distant in majesty or hidden in prophecy, but who comes to dwell with us as a tiny child. Drawing on Isaiahβs prophecy, the acrostic ero cras β βI will be with you tomorrowβ β and the tender way God chooses to win our hearts, we discover that the whole purpose of the Incarnation is intimacy. As Christmas dawns, this meditation invites us to welcome the Lord who calls Himself our God and who comes not to overwhelm us, but to be with us and to save us.

In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on O Rex Gentium, the antiphon that presents Christ as the stone rejected by the builders yet chosen to anchor all humanity. What does it mean to call Jesus the βRoot of Jesseβ? In this meditation, Fr Gavan reflects on the O Antiphon O Radix Jesse, the promise that from a dead royal line a new shoot would spring forth β the Messiah born for all peoples. Drawing on Isaiahβs prophecies, the silence of kings before Christ, and the longing of the nations symbolised in the Magi, we discover that the Child in the manger comes not only for Israel but for every man and woman who has ever lived. As Jesus approaches his death, he notices in his apostles a growing sadness. He tells them, "Be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world." Not to say that they won't have tribulations (most of them will be martyred in the end) β but that the final victory is His, and ours if we choose it.
