Mary welcomes back Don Veinot to discuss pastoring in the digital age: are pastors aware of the ways social media is shaping those in their care? One recent study reports that teens spend an astounding 10 hours every day on their cell phones, with tweens (ages 8-12) logging in at nearly 6 hours. Adults, on average, devote four hours and 25 minutes to scrolling. This means adults will spend over two months on their phones this year. When you consider that most Christians only spend a handful of hours each week worshiping, studying the bible, and in fellowship, we have to ask if we are being discipled more by our devices than anything else. In the 1970s even, what shaped youth was school, parents, community, perhaps church, and books and music; sometimes TV. But now capturing hearts and minds in these last days is a simple scroll away. Are we keeping up? How can the church counter any of its influence? Is it too late? A thoughtful conversation with a long-time apologist who loves the church.

Barbara grew up on Chicago’s Southside in Maple Park, Chicago’s first African American homeowners’ neighborhood. She joined Jesus People USA in her 20s where she met her husband of 44 years. Barbara has a BA in journalism from Bradley University and has studied radio/television broadcasting at Columbia College in Chicago. Currently she is actively involved with Ratio Christi on the University of North Florida campus, a ministry that equips and trains students in apologetics. Today we look at her rich and varied life through 2 books: “Was…Was That Jesus?” her memoir of 23 years at Jesus People USA. Her latest is, “Maple Park: Gathered Treasures of Black Life in the ‘60s”. While that might sound dramatic, it is absolutely what is and always was behind the door of the emergent church/emergence theology that dared to attempt to do plastic surgery on the bride of Christ by denying the need for the atonement, rethinking the gospel, and placing all power and authority for the end game of earth on man. Even though the Bible teaches something apocalyptically different, the doesn’t stop man from thinking that sin is merely all the ways society has let us down. How can Christians better respond to the left on this? Perhaps making fun of the No Kings approach isn’t the most helpful and yet it’s hard not to take that route. In John 3:29-30, we read, He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. John was said by Jesus to be the greatest among those born of women, but the least in the kingdom. Now that is a conundrum and yet we understand the unique position John was in for all of history, and that he never saw the crucifixion or resurrection. So let’s get practical: what does that mean to decrease and give Jesus preeminence in our lives? What does this look like as the ultimate ministry model? How is the church doing on that front when we consider all the glory some ministries take for themselves? A timely hour with JB.

Mary welcomes back seasoned apologist Don Veinot of Midwest Christian Outreach to talk about “sycretism” and why the majority of evangelicals embrace it to some level or another. What is syncretism? Is it those dreadful “Co-Exist” bumper stickers, or something more sinister? Syncretism is the mixing of one faith/belief system with another, it is mixing two things that aren’t supposed to go together. Accepting parts of each, but denying the whole. But the gospel cannot be divided and conquered to make us more comfortable. However, syncretism is the natural, meaning carnal, response to the Gospel. Some reject the Gospel completely. Others want to accept only part of the Gospel, merging specific aspects of it to fit their own ideas. We give quite a few examples, some of which might surprise the listener. Then we look at deconstruction – what it is and isn’t. One would hope that the one that is disappointed with orthodoxy on any level actually looked deeply into what Christianity actually teaches and then made a sober decision. Or is it emotional, a response to either God or man letting them down? A fundamental hour with Don.

Other things that separate us from the world are how we value life, our moral base, our identity and our destiny. We also take a look at the difference between “appreciation” and “expectation”. One exists in the here-and-now; the other exists in the unknown future and can be a true relationship killer when we presume what we deserve. The opposite of appreciation is insensitivity, disrespect, callousness, and disapproval. What are the factors that determine a Christian worldview and whether those who lead God’s people get it right, ie, live by every word? Dr. Blevins has extensive knowledge about the cults, the religions who have the “wrong Jesus”. The late Dr. Walter Martin said, “When people say, ‘I believe in Jesus’, look them straight in the eye and ask, ‘which one?’ Often if you do ask that, prepare yourself for a blank stare! The reason for that is that people really do think they are free to remake Jesus in their own image, according to their eternal comfort zone. Be ready to be challenged – to be ready to give an answer for your hope.

Here are some areas where the Catholic Catechism is often seen as departing from a purely biblical foundation:
1. Authority of Tradition & the Magisterium Catechism (CCC 80-82, 85): Catholicism teaches that divine revelation comes from both Scripture and Tradition, and that the Church’s Magisterium (Pope and bishops) has the authority to interpret both. * Biblical Challenge*: Protestants argue that the Bible alone is the final authority (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Matthew 15:3-9) and reject extra-biblical traditions as authoritative.
2. The Role of Mary Catechism (CCC 491, 494, 966, 971, 2677): Catholicism teaches that Mary was immaculately conceived (without sin), remained perpetually a virgin, was assumed bodily into heaven, and can intercede for believers. * Biblical Challenge*: The Bible states that “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23), never explicitly teaches Mary’s perpetual virginity (Matthew 1:24-25), and does not mention her bodily assumption. Additionally, Christ is the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5).
3. Salvation by Grace & Works Catechism (CCC 1987-2029): Catholic doctrine teaches that salvation is initially by grace but involves cooperation with God through faith, works, and the sacraments. * Biblical Challenge*: Many Protestants cite Ephesians 2:8-9, which states salvation is “by grace… through faith, not by works.” Romans 4:5 and Galatians 2:16 emphasize justification apart from the law.
4. The Sacraments as Necessary for Salvation Catechism (CCC 1129, 1257): The Catholic Church teaches that the sacraments (such as baptism and the Eucharist) are necessary for salvation. * Biblical Challenge*: While baptism and communion are important, the Bible presents salvation as a matter of faith in Christ (John 3:16; Acts 16:31). The thief on the cross was saved without sacraments (Luke 23:42-43).
5. Purgatory & Prayers for the Dead Catechism (CCC 1030-1032, 1472): Catholicism teaches that purgatory is a place of purification before entering heaven and that prayers for the dead can help souls be freed from temporal punishment. * Biblical Challenge*: The Bible does not explicitly teach purgatory. Hebrews 9:27 states that after death comes judgment, with no mention of an intermediate purification. Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient (John 19:30, Hebrews 10:14).
6. The Papacy & Apostolic Succession Catechism (CCC 882, 936-937): The Pope is seen as the successor of Peter and the supreme authority over the Church. * Biblical Challenge*: While Peter was a leader, the Bible does not establish a single, infallible ruler over the Church (Matthew 23:8-10). Christ is the true head (Colossians 1:18), and leadership is shared among elders (1 Peter 5:1-3).
7. The Eucharist (Transubstantiation) Catechism (CCC 1374-1377): Catholicism teaches that during the Mass, the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ. * Biblical Challenge*: Jesus spoke metaphorically about being the bread of life (John 6:35), and at the Last Supper, He often used figurative language (Luke 22:19-20). Many believe the Lord’s Supper is symbolic (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

The public education system in the United States is on life support. A few passionate educators work tirelessly to inspire their students, but their efforts can’t save a system increasingly defined by systemic inertia, burnout, and misplaced priorities. The structure is so deeply flawed that mediocrity has become the norm, and real reform remains out of reach.
If we’re honest, the system is broken. Most who are involved are just trying to make it to retirement, hoping someone else will step in and fix the mess. But no one is coming, and no one can save what’s designed to fail. It’s time to stop rearranging the deck chairs and start looking for the lifeboats.
The Vicious Cycle of Public Education
“Public” education has become a self-sustaining bureaucracy, resistant to meaningful change. Even the best teachers are shackled by a system that prioritizes survival over excellence. Here’s how the cycle perpetuates itself:
1.Systemic Inertia:
Public education resists reform because it’s massive and tied to government funding. Real change threatens the entire structure, so the system clings to the status quo. Even great educators can’t innovate when rigid curricula, standardized testing, and bloated administration hold them back.
2.Burnout and Survival Mode:
Many teachers enter the profession with idealism but quickly burn out under the weight of low pay, overwhelming workloads, and lack of support. Those who stay often shift into survival mode, doing just enough to get by while counting down to their pensions. For many, it’s no longer about the students—it’s about getting through the day.
3.Normalization of Mediocrity:
Public education is all many families know, and because it’s “free”, they stick with it even when it fails their children. Over time, failure becomes the norm, and the system slides into a “good enough” mindset. Incremental failures are tolerated rather than confronted.
4.Unions and Politics:
Teachers’ unions may protect jobs and benefits but often resist reforms that might disrupt the status quo. Meanwhile, political agendas hijack schools as battlegrounds for ideological fights, leaving systemic improvement off the table.
5.Outcome Disconnect:
Many educators and administrators are more focused on their retirement and pensions than on fixing the underlying issues. The system exists to sustain itself, not to educate the next generation.
Why It’s Impossible to Save a Broken System
A handful of good teachers can inspire individual students, but they can’t overhaul outdated policies, broken funding models, or bloated administration. Families often feel trapped, lacking the resources for private education or homeschooling. They accept the system as it is because they believe they have no other choice.
Instead of meaningful reform, we get Band-Aid solutions: new technologies, trendy teaching methods, or revamped testing models that fail to address the root problems of outdated curricula, ineffective leadership, and lack of accountability.
The truth is, public education is the Titanic. It’s sinking, and no amount of tinkering will keep it afloat.
Stop Trying to Fix What’s Broken—Invest in the Future
Rather than wasting time and resources on a failing system, it’s time to invest in alternatives that align with biblical values and provide real education for our children. Here’s where to start:
1.Expand Christian Education:
Christian schools are more than an alternative—they’re a lifeboat. They provide a Christ-centered foundation while equipping students with critical thinking skills and practical tools for success. If you’re an educator, consider joining this movement. If you’re a parent, make it a priority to find a Christian school for your children.
2.Turn Empty Churches Into Homeschools:
Churches across the country sit empty during the week, but they could become vibrant hubs for homeschooling co-ops or micro-schools. These spaces offer an affordable, community-driven way to provide education rooted in biblical truth.
3.Provide Real Alternatives:
Expand access to homeschooling networks, and vocational training programs. Families need real options, not just the illusion of choice.
4.Invest in the Right Direction:
Stop pouring resources into a dying system. Instead, support SOLID Christian schools, homeschooling networks, and organizations committed to providing solutions. These are the lifeboats our children need.
5.Encourage Parental Involvement:
Parents must step up and take an active role in their children’s education. This means advocating for better alternatives and educating themselves about what “better” looks like.
The Bigger Picture
The public education system isn’t just failing—it’s actively working against the values that once made it a cornerstone of society. For decades, Marxist and globalist ideologies have eroded family values, dismissed faith, and prioritized conformity over critical thinking. This isn’t accidental—it’s part of a broader agenda to undermine the foundations of our culture.
But we don’t have to stay on the sinking ship. By expanding Christian education, turning churches into homeschool hubs, and investing in the right direction, we can build something new. Something better.
This isn’t just about saving education. It’s about raising a generation equipped with truth, critical thinking, and the courage to stand for their faith in a world increasingly hostile to it.
The ship is sinking. The lifeboats are here. It’s time to get in—and start building a better future for our children.

Also on the list for today is, who is voting for Harris, as in, will men vote for her? Why are Christians saying they won’t vote? These stories have been trending in the headlines so we will take a look at a potential first female president and also what’s on the election docket. They may be in the grave but the gravity of their influence is astounding.

The reason for that is that people really do think they are free to remake Jesus in their own image, according to their eternal comfort zone. Be ready to be challenged – to be ready to give an answer for your hope.

During her counterculture youth, anything-but-Christianity was the spirit of the age and yet, God does not hide Himself regardless of what we choose to fill our lives with. Her crossroads came with the passing of her mother, a devout believer deeply loved by her daughter – who became driven by a heart that couldn’t live with the idea she might never see her again. Her book, “Heaven Without Her” chronicles a true apologetics path that led her to her own moment of truth. Hers is a testimony of great grace and also a testimony to the God who knew us from the foundation of the world.

Using the text of 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, we learn of Paul’s concerns that his readers (including this generation) would find themselves beguiled and bewitched just as Eve was and their/our minds would be corrupted. We will look at some of the ways this can and will happen at an increasingly rapid rate. Are we willing to tell people that they “have the wrong Jesus” and explain what that means? It’s not just the cults, such as Mormonism, that have the wrong Jesus.
In the 2nd half of the podcast Mary will look at some headlines about a variety of issues we are facing here in early 2024.

If Jesus was not raised from the dead, Christianity isn’t true, no one makes it to heaven, and this life is all there is. It’s every man for himself. Christianity stands or falls with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! 1 Corinthians 15:14-17
Fortunately for us, there’s good news today: it’s all true! Christianity had extremely humble beginnings along with massive opposition.
The first believers and disciples had very little money, there were no proven leaders, and no technological tools for promoting their message – the gospel. The faith was brand new. It taught bold truths that were incredible, and it was subject to the most intense hatred and persecution.
So why have so many followers of Christ and martyrs through the centuries die for their faith instead of deny Jesus? They were convinced the resurrection was true.
Anyone living at that time could have publicly examined the empty tomb for themselves, and many probably did. Both believers, seekers, and nonbelievers traveled for miles if necessary to the tomb of Jesus to look for His body. What happened?
Enemies of God simply had to produce the corpse of Jesus to stop the story from spreading. That would have done away with Christianity, but they could not do it. Why? Because the resurrection is true.
For those who want more proof Jesus existed or that events in the Bible happened, let’s look at some extra-biblical sources.
- According to Thallus, one of several non-biblical, pagan historians writing about that time, there was a darkness during the day followed by an earthquake that occurred at the point of Jesus’ crucifixion.
- Roman historian, Suetonius wrote about the new levels of punishment Nero inflicted on Christians, and described the fact Jesus had an immediate impact on His followers, empowering them to die courageously for what they knew to be true.
- Jewish historian, Josephus lived in the first century and writes about Jesus in more detail than any other non-biblical source.
- The second-century Roman historian Tacitus confirms that Christianity was founded by a man named Christus, whom he said was “put to death as a criminal by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea, in the reign of Tiberius.”
Jesus was on trial before the high priest Caiaphas, and then was taken to Pilate. The tomb of the Caiaphas family was discovered in 1990 in Jerusalem. Inside were the very bones of the infamous high priest mentioned in the Gospels!
As for Pontius Pilate, a first-century inscription discovered at Caesarea in 1961, confirming that he was indeed procurator of Judea from 26-36 A.D.
Too many believers were alive at the time. Hundreds if not thousands of eyewitnesses saw miracles Jesus did and most importantly, saw the risen Christ after the resurrection!
Let’s look at the good news in 1 Corinthians, a letter that was written sometime around 50 A.D. which is less than twenty years after Jesus’ resurrection.
“Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that… 5 He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; (1 Corinthians 15:1-7)
Wait just a minute! The Bible reveals that James didn’t believe in Jesus just weeks prior to His arrest and crucifixion.
Out of all the people who saw the living, resurrected Messiah, Jesus made a point to appear to his half-brother, James. And Paul made a point to mention James by name.
Jewish historian, Josephus also testifies that James, the brother of Jesus, and leader of the Jerusalem council, was executed. What then could explain such a sudden, radical conversion and transformation in James?
A known skeptic, this Jewish man somehow became willing to die for his faith. How do you explain this turnaround and historical fact? The resurrection is true, and Jesus showed Himself to James (1 Cor. 15:7).
Furthermore, to give you an idea why the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Romans could not refute the facts, too many eyewitnesses were involved in the story:
- At the cross – (Jesus’ mother, His aunt, Mary the wife of Cleopas, Mary Magdalene, and the Apostle John)
- At the tomb of Jesus – (Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus) before the soldiers closed and sealed it up; Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of JOSES saw where He was laid. Mark 15:47
- Resurrection Sunday – Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of JAMES, and Salome brought spices to anoint Him for burial. Mark 16:1
- Upper Room, at least twice (Thomas touched Jesus’ side)
- On the road to Emmaus (two disciples, Cleopas mentioned by name)
- While they were eating with Him
- While six of the disciples were fishing including Didymus and Nathaniel
- A large group at Jesus’ ascension (Acts 1:9-11).
Luke 24 mentions Mary, Joanna, and the OTHER women and the fact they returned from the tomb to tell the Apostles they saw Jesus alive! What a blessing to have Luke’s detailed, inspiring, meticulous, journalistic account of Jesus.
The Book of Luke often points to the Old Testament. He proclaims the things foretold by the prophets God has fulfilled – including the suffering of Christ, the Messiah (Acts 3:18).
Why believe? Here’s the beginning of Luke’s second detailed account, the Book of Acts:
The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. (Acts 1:1-3)
Powerful words: many infallible proofs.
The risen Jesus stayed on earth for over a month to visit believers, establish in their hearts the truth of the resurrection, and to teach them about what Moses and the prophets had written about Him.
As signs of the times and Bible prophecy indicate, His promised return is getting closer and closer. The Book of Acts provides a pretty big clue about that Day.
Luke continues in the first chapter of Acts about Jesus,
He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)
Did you catch that. Jesus ascended to glory from the Mount of Olives just east of Jerusalem, and God’s messenger said He will return in the same way. Wow.
Moreover, Old Testament prophet, Zechariah provides a few more clues about the return of Messiah, stating:
And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east… ( Zec. 14:4a)
At the return of Jesus Christ, He will enter the city through the now cemented and sealed Eastern Gate, also known as the Golden Gate. (Ezekiel 44:1-3; Nehemiah 3:29).
In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul writes:
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Cor. 15:51-52)
This is the truth. We can have very real hope! in the truth of Jesus’ resurrection and promise of His return!
The best-selling book of all time, the Bible, is a masterpiece combining thousands of years of historical events, written by over 40 different authors on three different continents, including prophecies in perfect and specific detail.
Who could have successfully carried out such an elaborate plan? Through the centuries, Scripture has been confirmed again and again by archaeology, strengthened by eyewitness testimony, manuscript evidence, reinforced by hundreds of fulfilled prophecies, and has radically changed millions of hearts and lives.
Before His death on the cross, Jesus told His followers exactly what He came to accomplish and how it had to happen. After His resurrection, Jesus said:
“…These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” Luke 24:44-48
The resurrection guarantees that as believers, we will live forever, appear before Christ, be like Him, and be filled with joy in His presence forever. There is no other name under heaven by which mankind can be saved (Acts 4:12).
True believers in Christ will always be with the Lord! So share the gospel, be confident in its truth, look forward to the rapture, and encourage others with these words.

California just made it illegal for boy's and girl's toys to be separated. Departments must be gender neutral. Our culture is saying you can't change behavior but you can change your biology. The Bible tells us that long before the world began, God orchestrated a masterful plan to reconcile sinners to a holy, loving God. Through history, He provided a road map as He foretold various signs and specific conditions by which the Messiah would arrive to save mankind. His prophets spoke of things to watch for so the Messiah would be recognized and believed.
Before the world began, He knew that Jesus would come to earth and give Himself as a holy and final offering for sin; once and for all. A baby born of a virgin in a manger would become the Lamb of God. To those who trust in Him and obey His commandments, God has promised a fulfillment to our hope in Christ: He is returning soon, and we will be in His presence for eternity.

As we see more young people and leaders abandoning the Christian faith, it is important we assess their thought process and motives in doing so. (They are taking some followers with them and away from the truth.) To simply argue about whether or not they were ever truly converted believers can be unproductive.
The reality is that many younger people either want nothing to do with historical, Biblical Christianity or they are finding churches and denominations that are redefining and diluting Christian doctrines to line up with their worldly values and philosophies.

A series of recent surveys asked youth who they trust for advice on important moral and practical decisions. Police, government, and even parents were on the list. But what was at the top? College Professors! This is obviously bad news for them, our country, and the Christian Church since the vast majority of College professors are progressive at best and anti-Christian and pro-socialism at worst.
Parents really have their work cut out for them today. Christian kids need a solid foundation of truth and a biblical worldview. Unless things change, things will only grow worse for our nation and the Church in America.

When we believe something important is truth, and base our life and entire belief system around it only to find out the assumption was wrong, it changes the way we see everything. Sadly, too often in public education and media we are being led to assume certain false beliefs and philosophies are true, and this deception affects how we view God and life itself.
