Old Whittington, 2020

When paramedics arrived at the home of Shannon Marsden and her boyfriend Stephan Boden in the early hours of Christmas Day 2020, it wasn't just the squalor of the place that shocked them. Initial reports suggested that their son, 10 month old Finley Boden, was struggling for breath; possibly as a result of a covid-19 infection.

The reality of his situation however became clear almost instantly. A victim of violence and neglect, how could a child who should have been one of the most protected in the county been allowed to die in such tragic circumstances?

Ilkeston 1962, Part 1

When 37 year old Sonia Wilson sat down in front of detectives at Ilkeston police station, neither they nor her knew where to begin.

She had asked to speak to them about a crime she'd committed.

Surprised that such a respectable middle-class woman was volunteering her own guilt, the shocking story she had to tell left the detectives doubting the truth of what she told them.

What unfolded was a tale of horror and greed, exploitation and duty.

Part two is out next week so be sure to subscribe. You won't want to miss it.

Derby 2020

The financial cost of arson in the UK runs at approximately one and a half billion pounds a year.

When a series of fires are set across Derby in the last few months of 2020, both the police and fire services were forced to confront the dark reality that, unless the perpetrators were stopped, it was just a matter of time before harm would come to people, rather than just property.

Peak True Crime - Case Note

The Boy from Repton School

The English Public School is seen as the epitomising all that good about the country.

Loyalty, hard work, honesty and a sense of fair play are attributes parents expect that just such an education will instill in their sons and daughters.

How then, does a former pupil of one of the leading public schools in the country go from being a shining star of the 1st XI cricket team to being a convicted drug smuggler who was caught trying to import 1.5 tons of cocaine into the UK?

Is the fall from grace of Jonathan Arnold all the more dramatic given his mother used to be a deputy Police and Crime Commissioner?

The Pigeon Champion of Pinxton

In late April 2023, the remains of a man were discovered buried on farmland near Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. After weeks of painstaking work at the site, and with the help of the public, the remains were identified as that of 52 year old Alfred Swinscoe, a Derbyshire miner who had been missing for over half a century.

In this first of what will be an occasional series, we look into what’s known about Alfred, his life and the challenges an investigation like this represents to detectives.

Although they haven’t contributed directly to this episode, I would like to thank Alfred’s family for taking the time to listen to the episode in advance of publication and corroborating the biographical information I’ve been able to unearth.

If you are able to help Nottinghamshire Police in any way to find the answers the family are so desperately looking for, please call the enquiry team on 0800 096 0095.

This episode is somewhat of a departure For Peak True Crime.

I interview Ken Davies, the creator of the incredible real-time investigative podcast The Mysterious Case of Fred The Head.

The body of an unknown man was discovered in Burton, Staffordshire in 1971.

Ken explains the case -spoiler free - and the fact that along with his merry band of helpers the podcast is undertaking a real-time investigation which goes much further than the police ever did.

Ken also talks about his other podcast which looks into an unidentified man who's body found at sea off the shores of the German island of Heligoland in 1994

What has actually happened is that in just a few weeks this podcast has become something of a sensation, attracting recognition from some of the greats of true crime podcasting.
