In 2020, during the midst of the Global Pandemic, but prior to the start of the Major League Baseball season, I was watching an old game on television. It’s the best I could do. All sports had been suspended. People were simply staying in their houses as much as possible. During this particular game, a batter was at the plate. Unfortunately, I don’t recall the batter’s name, or even the teams that I was watching on replay. But the announcers were commenting that the batter at the plate was in a horrible slump. He couldn’t hit the ball. He couldn’t do anything right to get his swing back. Keep in mind that this was a Major League Baseball player and was more than likely paid a large sum to do just that . . . hit the ball. Even so, he simply was missing the mark.
As one of the pitches came in, the batter swung his bat . . . it looked awkward . . . really awkward. However, the ball barely touched the end of his bat, and it dribbled along the field between the First and Second Basemen. He made it to first . . . with a single. The slump was over! As the batter removed his gloves and gave the First Base Coach a “five”, the announcers, while laughing, said, “You see, sometimes you just need to make contact.”
Many of us experienced failures both big and small in 2021 (and 2020 for that matter). Even so, failure is not the end game. Nelson Mandela says about failure, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.”
