Hope is the thing with feathers.
By Emily Dickinson
"Hope" is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul-
And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all -
And sweetest in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I've heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of Me.

How many times these low feet staggered -
Only the soldered mouth can tell -
Try -can you stir the awful rivet -
Try - can you lift the hasps of steel!
Stroke the cool forehead-hot so often Lift - if you care- the listless hair
Fondle the adamantine fingers
Never a thimble - shall wear -
Buzz the dull flies - on the chamber window -
Brave - shines the sun through the freckled pane -
Fearless - the cobweb swings from the ceiling - Indolent Housewife - in Daisies - lain!

There is a light seed grain inside.
by Rumi
There is a light seed grain inside. You fill it with yourself, or it dies.
I am bound by the power of this coil! your hair!
Calm and sensible people are not normal!

Where are we? – by Rumi
An invisible bird flies over,
but casts a quick shadow.
What is the body? That shadow of a shadow of your love, that somehow contains
the entire universe.
A man sleeps heavily,
though something blazes in him like the sun,
like a magnificent fringe sewn up under the hem.
He turns under the covers.
Any image is a lie:
A clear red stone tastes sweet.
You kiss a beautiful mouth, and a key
turns in the lock of your fear.
A spoken sentence sharpens to a fine edge.
A mother dove looks for her nest,
asking where, /ku?/ Where, /ku?/
Where the lion lies down.
Where any man or woman goes to cry.
Where the sick go when they hope to get well.
Where a wind lifts that helps with winnowing.
and, the same moment, send a ship on its way.
Where anyone says /Only God is Real./
/Ya Hu!/ Where beyond /where./
A bright weaver’s shuttle flashes back and forth,
east-west. /Where are we? Ma ku? Maku/.
like the sun saying /Where are we?/
as it weaves with the asking.

Five Things To Say /By Rumi
The wakened lover speaks directly to the beloved:
“You are the sky my spirit circles in
The love inside of love, the resurrection-place.
Let this window be your ear.
I have lost consciousness many times
With longing for your listening silence
And your life-quickening smile.
You give attention to the smallest matters
My suspicious doubts, and to the greatest
You know my coins are counterfeit
But you accept them anyway
My impudence and my pretending!
I have five things to say,
five fingers to give into your grace.
First, when I was apart from you
this world did not exist
nor any other.
Second, whatever I was looking for
was always you.
Third, why did I ever learn to count to three?
Fourth, my cornfield is burning!
Fifth, this finger stands for Rabia*
and this is for someone else.
Is there a difference?
Are these words or tears?
Is weeping speech?
What shall I do, my love?”
So he speaks, and everyone around
begins to cry with him, laughing crazily
moaning in the spreading union
of lover and beloved.
This is the true religion. All others
are thrown-away bandages beside it.
This is the sema* of slavery and mastery
of dancing together. This is not-being.
Neither words, nor any natural fact
can express this.
I know these dancers
day and night I sing their songs
in this phenomenal cage
My soul, don’t try to answer now!
Find a friend, and hide.
But what can stay hidden?
Love’s secret is always lifting its head
out from under the covers:
“Here I am!”

當你和朋友分開時,不要悲傷;
On Friendship Kahlil Gibran
And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship.
And he answered, saying:
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.”
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery us not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.
And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

THE WICKED POSTMAN
By Tagore
Why do you sit there on the floor so quiet and silent, tell me, mother dear?
The rain is coming in through the open window, making you all wet, and you don't mind it.
Do you hear the gong striking four? It is time for my brother to come home from school.
What has happened to you that you look so strange? Haven't you got a letter from father to-day?
I saw the postman bringing letters in his bag for almost everybody in the town.
Only, father's letters he keeps to read himself. I am sure the postman is a wicked man.
But don't be unhappy about that, mother dear.
To-morrow is market day in the next village. You ask your maid to buy some pens and papers.
I myself will write all father's letters; you will not find a single mistake.
I shall write from A right up to K.
But, mother, why do you smile?. You don't believe that I can write as nicely as father does!
But I shall rule my paper carefully, and write all the letters beautifully big.
When I finish my writing, do you think I shall be so foolish as father and drop it into the horrid postman's bag?
I shall bring it to you myself without waiting, and letter by letter help you to read my writing.
I know the postman does not like to give you the really nice letters.

Villanelle
/ by William Empson
It is the pain, it is the pain, endures.
Your chemic beauty burned my muscles through.
Poise of my hands reminded me of yours.
What later purge from this deep toxin cures?
What kindness now could the old salve renew? I
t is the pain, it is the pain, endures.
The infection slept (custom or change inures)
And when pain's secondary phase was due
Poise of my hands reminded me of yours.
How safe I felt, whom memory assures, Rich that your grace safely by heart I knew.
It is the pain, it is the pain, endures.
My stare drank deep beauty that still allures.
My heart pumps yet the poison draught of you.
Poise of my hands reminded me of yours.
You are still kind whom the same shape immures.
Kind and beyond adieu.
We miss our cue.
It is the pain, it is the pain, endures.
Poise of my hands reminded me of yours.

Plant No Poppy (He Said)
by Elizabeth Daryush
Plant no poppy (he said)
no frail lily sublime,
for in war's famine-time
thou'lt need but corn for bread.
Hoard no jewel (he cried)
no dazzling laboured gem:
thou'lt be forced to sell them
for steel, so now decide.
Set no flower in thy word
(he besought, but none heard)
cut no flash to thy wit,
if thou must disown it
when seest thou sorrow's sword.

The Horses By Edwin Muir
Barely a twelvemonth after
The seven days war that put the world to sleep,
Late in the evening the strange horses came.
By then we had made our covenant with silence,
But in the first few days it was so still We listened to our breathing and were afraid.
On the second day
The radios failed; we turned the knobs; no answer.
On the third day a warship passed us, heading north,
Dead bodies piled on the deck. On the sixth day
A plane plunged over us into the sea. Thereafter Nothing.
The radios dumb;
And still they stand in corners of our kitchens,
And stand, perhaps, turned on, in a million rooms
All over the world. But now if they should speak
If on a sudden they should speak again,
If on the stroke of noon a voice should speak,
We would not listen, we would not let it bring
That old bad world that swallowed its children quick
At one great gulp. We would not have it again.
Sometimes we think of the nations lying asleep,
Curled blindly in impenetrable sorrow, And then the thought confounds us with its strangeness.
The tractors lie about our fields; at evening
They look like dank sea-monsters couched and waiting.
We leave them where they are and let them rust:
'They'll moulder away and be like other loam'.
We make our oxen drag our rusty ploughs,
Long laid aside. We have gone back Far past our father's land.
And then, that evening Late in the summer the strange horses came.
We heard a distant tapping on the road,
A deepening drumming; it stopped, went on again And at the corner changed to hollow thunder.
We saw the heads Like a wild wave charging and were afraid.
We had sold our horses in our fathers' time We did not dare go near them. Yet they waited, Stubborn and shy, as if they had been sent To buy new tractors.
Now they were strange to us As fabulous steeds set on an ancient shield Or illustrations in a book of knights
By an old command to find our whereabouts
And that long-lost archaic companionship. In the first moment we had never a thought
That they were creatures to be owned and used.
Among them were some half-a-dozen colts Dropped in some wilderness of the broken world,
Yet new as if they had come from their own Eden.
Since then they have pulled our ploughs and borne our loads, But that free servitude still can pierce our hearts.
Our life is changed; their coming our beginning.

The Servant Who Loves Prayer ~ Rumi
At dawn, some rich man wants to go to the steam room.
He woke his servant Sunkur.
"Hoo! Get moving! Get the basin, we'll go take a shower."
Sunqur immediately gathered what he needed and lined up by the roadside.
As they passed the mosque,
"Please, master, rest on this bench for a while, I may recite the beginning of Surah 98, and the call to prayer rings out.
Sunqur likes his five prayers.
"You may be kind to your servant." "
The master sat on the bench outside, and Sunkur went in.
After the prayer, the pastor and all the believers had left, and Sunqur remained inside.
The master waited and waited, and finally he called to the mosque: "Sunkur! Why don't you come out?" "I can't. This wise man won't let me. Be patient. I hear you outside. '
The master waited seven times, then shouted.
Same, Sunqur's reply is always "Not yet. He won't let me out yet."
"But there's no one inside but you. Everyone else is gone. Who let you sit for so long?"
"The one who left me here is the one who left you outside. The one who won't let you in That man won't let me out either."
The ocean won't let its fish go out on its own. It also keeps terrestrial animals out of places where delicate and delicate fish work. Land creatures stagger on the ground.
No cleverness can change that. There is only one opener for locking these things.Lock down these issues with only one opener.
Forget your numbers.
Forget yourself.
listen to your friends.
When you submit to The ONE completely, you are free.

On Freedom By Jubran
And an orator said, Speak to us of Freedom.
And he answered:
At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and
worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.
Aye, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel
I have seen the freest among you
wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.
And my heart bled within me;
for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you,
and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfillment.
You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.
And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding have fastened around your noon hour?
In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains,
though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle your eyes.
And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?
If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.
You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges, though you pour the sea upon them.
And if it is a despot you would dethrone,
see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.
For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyranny in their own freedom
and a shame in their own pride?
And if it is a care you would cast off,
that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.
And if it is a fear you would dispel,
the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.
Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace,
the desired and the dreaded,
the repugnant and the cherished,
the pursued and that which you would escape.
These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that linger becomes a shadow to another light.
And thus you freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom.

想起寂寂無聞的死者和慫恿我們去屠殺的達官貴人,以及一群群難民;
All Day It Has Rained By Alun Lewis
All day it has rained, and we on the edge of the moors
Have sprawled in our bell-tents, moody and dull as boors,
Groundsheets and blankets spread on the muddy ground
And from the first grey wakening we have found
No refuge from the skirmishing fine rain
And the wind that made the canvas heave and flap
And the taut wet guy-ropes ravel out and snap.
All day the rain has glided, wave and mist and dream,
Drenching the gorse and heather, a gossamer stream
Too light to stir the acorns that suddenly
Snatched from their cups by the wild south-westerly
Pattered against the tent and our upturned dreaming faces.
And we stretched out, unbuttoning our braces,
Smoking a Woodbine, darning dirty socks,
Reading the Sunday papers—-I saw a fox
And mentioned it in the note I scribbled home;—
And we talked of girls and dropping bombs on Rome,
And thought of the quiet dead and the loud celebrities
Exhorting us to slaughter, and the herded refugees;
——Yet thought softly, morosely of them, and as indifferently
As of ourselves or those whom we
For years have loved, but now it is in the rain
Possesses us entirely, the twilight and the rain.
And I can remember nothing dearer or more to my heart
Than the children I watched in the woods on Saturday
Shaking down burning chestnuts for the schoolyard’s merry play,
Or the shaggy patient dog who followed me
By Sheet and Steep and up the wooded scree
To the Shoulder o’ Mutton where Edward Thomas brooded long
On death and beauty —-till a bullet stopped his song.

I’ll tell you how the sun rose/
By Emily Dickinson
I’ll tell you how the sun rose
A Ribbon at a time
The Steeples swam in Amethyst
The news, like Squirrels, ran
The Hils untied their Bonnets
The Bobolinks—begun—
Then I said softly to myself
“ That must have been the Sun”
But how he set- I know not-
There seems a purple stile
That little Yellow boys and girls
Were climbing all the while
Till when they reached the other side,
A Dominie in Gray
Put gently up the evening Bars
And led the flock away

TRANSLATION OF THE FAMOUS GREEK WAR SONG
By Byron
Sons of the Greeks, arise!
The glorious hour’s gone forth,
And, worthy of such ties,
Display who gave us birth.
Sons of Greeks! Let us go
In arms against the foe,
Till their hated blood shall flow
In a river past our feet.
Then manfully despising
The Turkish tyrant’s yoke,
Let your country see you rising,
And all her chains are broke.
Brave shades of chiefs and sages,
Behold the coming strife!
Hallenes of past ages,
Oh, start again to life!
At the sound of my trumpet, breaking
Your sleep, oh, join with me!
And the seven-hill’d city seeking,
Fight, conquer, till we’re free.
Sons of Greeks! Let us go
In arms against the foe,
Till their hated blood shall flow
In a river past our feet.
Sparta, Sparta, why in slumbers
Lethargic dolt thou lie?
Awake, and join thy numbers
With Athens, old ally!
Leonidas recalling,
That chief of ancient song,
Who saved ye once from falling,
The terrible! the strong!
Who made that bold diversion
In old Thermopylae,
And warring with the Persian
To keep his country free;
With his three hundred waging
The battle, long he stood,
And like a lion raging,
Expired in seas of blood.
Sons of Greeks!let us go
In arms against the foe,
Till their hated blood shall flow
In a river past our feet.

THE SAILOR
The boat of the boatman Madhu is moored at the wharf of Rajgunj.
It is uselessly laden with jute, and has been lying there idle for ever so long.
If he would only lend me his boat, I should man her with a hundred oars, and hoist sails, five or six or seven.
Ishould never steer her to stupid markets.
I should sail the seven seas and the thirteen rivers of fairyland.
But, mother, you won’t weep for me in a corner.
I am not going into the forest like Ramachandra to come back
only after fourteen years.
I shall become the prince of the story, and fill my boat with
whatever I like.
I shall take my friend Ashu with me. We shall sail merrily
across the ever seas and the thirteen rivers of fairyland.
We shall set sail in the early morning light.
When at noontide you are bathing at the pond, we shall be in
the land of a strange king.
We shall pass the ford of Tirpurni, and leave behind us the
desert of Tepantar.
When we come back it will be getting dark, and I shall tell
you of all that we have seen.
I shall cross the seven seas and the thirteen rivers of
fairyland.

The Song of the happy shepherd
The woods of Arcady are dead,
And over is their antique joy;
Of old the world on dreaming fed;
Grey Truth is now her painted toy;
Yet still she turns her restless head:
But O, sick children of the world,
Of all the many changing things
In dreary dancing past us whirled,
To the cracked tune that Chronos sings,
Words alone are certain good.
Where are now the warring kings,
Word be-mockers?—By the Rood
Where are now the warring kings?
An idle word is now their glory,
By the stammering schoolboy said,
Reading some entangled story:
The kings of the old time are dead;
The wandering earth herself may be
Only a sudden flaming word,
In clanging space a moment heard,
Troubling the endless reverie.
Then nowise worship dusty deeds,
Nor seek, for this is also sooth,
To hunger fiercely after truth,
Lest all thy toiling only breeds
New dreams, new dreams; there is no truth
Saving in thine own heart. Seek, then,
No learning from the starry men,
Who follow with the optic glass
The whirling ways of stars that pass —
Seek, then, for this is also sooth,
No word of theirs—the cold star-bane
Has cloven and rent their hearts in twain,
And dead is all their human truth.
Go gather by the humming sea
Some twisted, echo-harbouring shell,
And to its lips thy story tell,
And they thy comforters will be,
Rewording in melodious guile
Thy fretful words a little while,
Till they shall singing fade in ruth
And die a pearly brotherhood;
For words alone are certain good:
Sing, then, for this is also sooth.
I must be gone: there is a grave
Where daffodil and lily wave,
And I would please the hapless faun,
Buried under the sleepy ground,
With mirthful songs before the dawn.
His shouting days with mirth were crowned;
And still I dream he treads the lawn,
Walking ghostly in the dew,
Pierced by my glad singing through,
My songs of old earth‘s dreamy youth:
But ah! she dreams not now; dream thou!
For fair are poppies on the brow:
Dream, dream, for this is also sooth.
