A few years ago, some paleontologists were digging for fossils in Glen Rose, Texas. The archaeologists left an excavator out overnight during a thunderstorm and BAM! It was struck by lightning! The lighting bolt was so powerful that it unleashed the spirits of the dinosaurs buried in Glen Rose. Because it was parked right on top of all of those dinosaur fossils, the lightning turned the excavator into a half digger and half dinosaur creature – a Digger Rex!
At first the excavator didn’t know what to do when he turned into Digger Rex. He still loved to dig, but he also wanted to learn more about his dinosaur ancestors. So he decided to do both! Now he travels all around the world, digging up fossils and making cool dinosaur discoveries!
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos on the slopes of Mount Kirkpatrick in the Central Trans-Antarctic Mountains, which divide east Antarctica from west Antarctica. This mountain range is important to palaeontologists because it is home to the Hanson Formation, which is a rock formation where many dinosaur fossils from the Late Cretaceous period have been found.
It's exciting to imagine how this now snowy, barren land was once filled with all sorts of
trees and plants and lots of ancient animals. Who knows what type of dinosaur we will unearth today?!
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos in Argentina! Argentina is the second-largest country in South America after Brazil and it’s the eighth-largest country in the whole world! WOAH!
Thirty different types of dinosaurs have been unearthed by palaeontologists in this incredible country, which means that life flourished here hundreds of millions of years ago too. Digger Rex is really excited to start digging here in Argentina. Who knows what type of dinosaur we will unearth today?!

Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos in Montana. Montana is a western state in the USA that is well
known for its beautiful and diverse landscapes. It has everything from the Rocky Mountains
to the Great Plains!
It just so happens that Digger Rex has found the perfect spot for dinosaur digging. It’s called the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation and it’s heaven on earth for palaeontologists. In fact, once the first fossils were discovered in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in 1877, it became the center of The
Bone Wars, a famous fossil-collecting rivalry between early palaeontologists Othniel Charles March and Edward Drinker Cope.
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos in Mongolia! Mongolia is a land locked country in east Asia,
famed for its Gobi Desert filled with unique sand dunes and fearsome sandstorms.
75 million years ago there WERE plenty of dinosaurs in Mongolia! 47 different species of dinosaurs have been discovered by palaeontologists in Mongolia, including a famous nest of baby giant hadrosaur fossils.

Today Digger Rex is digging for dinos in the Bighorn Basin of northern Wyoming. It’s not the most scenic stretch of the United States. Rocky, sandy, and dotted with small unspectacular shrubs, the Bighorn Basin is a 100 mile semi-arid patch in the middle of nowhere. For the casual traveller, it probably isn’t an ideal place to stop and explore.
But for a palaeontologist? Well, let’s just say that for a paleaontologist the Bighorn Basin in northern Wyoming is like Disneyland, Universal Studios and Six Flags all rolled into one! So many fossils have been discovered in the Bighorn Basin that it’s come to be known by palaeontologists as the “Jurassic Mile”!
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos north of Lisbon, which is the capital city of Portugal! Portugal is
a southern European country that borders Spain. It’s well known for its beaches, seafood
cuisine, soccer legends and fado music. There’s no doubt that Portugal is a vibrant country
these days and -- based on the dinosaur fossils that have been discovered there -- it had a very
colorful prehistory too!
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos in Faith, which is a city in the US state of South Dakota. Faith is
a very small city with fewer than 500 residents nowadays, but 65 million years ago we know
that this area’s residents were anything BUT small!
Today, Digger Rex is digging for dinos on the Isle of Wight, which is an island off the south coast of
England. The Isle of Wight is well known for its dinosaurs. Why, there’s even a Dinosaur Isle Museum and Dinosaur Maze attraction on this small island because of all the amazing fossils that have been discovered here over the years!
