Ask any artist and they will tell you that in their world, collaboration is essential. And this episodes guests concur. Jillian Ross and her partner Brendan Copestake founded Jillian Ross Print in 2021 as a collaborative print studio and publisher working primarily with South African and Canadian artists, studios, institutions and galleries to develop print projects, exhibitions, art workshops, and talks. Collaboration is central to their working practise and many of their large-scale projects include a team of printers for their creation and multiple workshops for their making.

Join author Miguel Fenrich and the 2025 Youth Poet Laureate, Tai Reign in conversation about Tai's work, how they manage self-care, and some deep insights on society today.
Miguel is a queer, Sudanese-Canadian professional artist living and playing on Treaty 6 Territory in Saskatoon. As a truth-teller, his work often explores community/culture/care and their messy relationships with truth through an intersectional, decolonial lense. He is the author of Blue: a Novel and What Lies in the Valley. He is the President of the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild and is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. He is working on his third novel + many other things.
Tai Reign is a Two-Spirit artist from Peepeekisis Cree Nation based in Regina, Saskatchewan. As a young artist, they've used spoken word as an avenue of self expression. Collaborating with artists from different disciplines has helped them find a sense of connection and play in art and storytelling.

In this 4th episode in the series "Mental Health and the Arts" guest host Kevin power talks with award-winning author David A. Robertson to discuss his 2025 memoir, All the Little Monsters: How I Learned to Live with Anxiety. David opens up about his journey with chronic anxiety and depression. David says: "If someone's going to look at me... they might think that I've got it all together. And I think it's important to hear it sometimes that I don't. The more we share with each other... the more we were able to build a community of support." Hopefully some of David's story resonates with listeners and help us all feel a little less alone on the journey.

Marian Donnelly began her professional path in the arts and non-profit sector when she was in her teens. 50 years (as of 2025) later she is still at it! And there is "not a damn thing" Marian could tell her teen self if she could, because the path is filled with dips and turns and successes, disappointments, frustrating, and joy that no one could prepare for until you are in it. And in it she is! Marian's motto "Live a life of purpose and adventure" is why she does what she does. Somedays it feels like one step forward, one step back. The point is, Marian continues to take those steps today, and the world of creative arts and non-profit sectors in Saskatchewan is all the better for it. Given her massive success as a Canadian photographer it's hard to believe that there was a time, when, not once, but twice Thelma Pepper faced depression head-on. Her belief was that she needed to find something that would make her feel good about herself. Those who know her work can attest to the fact that the power of her photography touched the lives of her subjects and audiences. It is that kind of reaction that was all the confirmation Thelma needed to know that she had found her bliss, and in doing so, found that "something" that made her feel good about herself. In this episode guest host Kevin Power is in conversation with Thelma Pepper's youngest son Gordon. Gordon is a Saskatchewan film maker who gives listeners a first-hand look into the remarkable life of Thelma Pepper.

The Caswell Bus Barns project is an ambitious redevelopment initiative in Saskatoon, transforming the historic Saskatoon Transit facility into a vibrant mixed-use hub. Spearheaded by CBB Ltd., a consortium of local investors, developers, and designers, the project aims to preserve the site's heritage while introducing modern spaces.
At the heart of this transformation is Crystal Bueckert, a renowned Saskatoon-based designer and co-founder of CBB Ltd. As the owner and senior designer at Bldg Studio Inc., established in 2011, Bueckert has been instrumental in promoting sustainable construction and efficient design. Crystal is Em Ironstar's guest for this episode and the news of The Caswell Bus Barns is one of the most exciting projects in Saskatoon and one that is sure to serve the entire community.

With her ancestral ties to the traditional territory of Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Lyndsay Amato's work is greatly influenced by lived experience, education and blood memory and her extensive experience working in the fields of education and Indigenous media.
She is passionate about strengthening the voice and influence of First Nation perspectives within community programs by bringing her unique perspective to the table – diagnosed with ADHD late in life, it is easy to see how Lyndsay has been able to use that to her advantage – becoming an artist, educator and advocate in a way that challenges the social “norms.”

Never make the assumption that an artist is practicing what amounts to be a hobby! That's what this episodes guest Melanie Monique Rose might experience were it not for her wise business choices in which making a fair and equitable, living wage is a non-negotiable, or at the very least, on her terms.
Ensuring artists receive a decent wage is crucial for the sustainability of creative industries and the well-being of those who contribute to our cultural landscape. Fair compensation not only recognizes the skill and labor that go into artistic work but also allows artists to focus on their craft without the constant stress of financial insecurity.

Jennifer Dawn Bishop thought maybe she’d grow up to be an all-star basketball player or perhaps a dress designer. But a school theatre presentation in grade 8 (Circle of voices playhouse) set her on a course to life in the theatre. She found her voice through acting, writing, directing, stage managing to her current role as artistic director of the Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre in Saskatoon. This is the story of a unique, alternative model for producing independent performing art in Saskatoon. It's the story of opportunity meeting need. The need was an organization dedicated to assisting independent artists in overcoming the many barriers, duties and details required to stage their art for public performance. Saskatoon's On the Boards Staging Company met that need and continues to do so today. On the Boards ensures a positive, professional experience for the artist, and ultimately, for the patron. As Executive Director Cynthia Dyck and Technical Director Jim Arthur prepare to pass the torch on to a new team, the two share their journey then, now and their hopes for the future.

Em Ironstar is joined by freelance journalist, writer, editor and theatre artist John Loeppky. John has an often brilliant and insightful take on so many issues within the arts community - and often very humorous. Em and John discuss some important issues facing our community including, disability culture, activism, business training for artists, and the relationship between art and sport. Johns work has appeared for the likes of CBC, The Globe and Mail, FiveThirtyEight, American Theater, Healthline, and a host of others. Within the arts, he works primarily with Listen to Dis' Community Arts. His goal in life is to have an entertaining obituary to read.

It's the first Arts Everywhere roundtable! In this episode, Em Ironstar is joined by

Josh Haugerud grew up in the small town of Craik Saskatchewan. His journey so far as been eclectic to say the least: in the trades as a welder, a bachelor degrees in women's and gender studies and political science , working in the credit union system in marketing and policy development, running the medical first responders and therapy dog programs for St John ambulance Saskatchewan, a multi-instrumentalist, 5 years running Regina community radio and currently as the executive director of the Regina folk festival.
In this conversation with Em Ironstar Josh shares his passion for the arts. He addresses the ups and downs we all face in the arts, how the pandemic forced the Regina Folk Festival to pivot, the ongoing funding issues, volunteerism and the belief that the arts should be accessible to all.

Mark Turner knows how to navigate his life in the arts which, planned or not, has led him to his current position as Executive Director and Creative Producer of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. Now in its 92nd season, the Symphony has faced many challenges, not the least of which has been the pandemic. This is an honest and thought provoking conversation with a guest who grew up in a generational arts family so his life in the arts was "destined to be".
