In a world obsessed with diets, restrictions, and body image, intuitive eating is a breath of fresh air. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for a podcast conversation with Libby Supan, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and certified intuitive eating coach. We discussed body positivity, intuitive eating, and disordered eating.

CW: This interview does contain reference to past binging and purging and restriction (from a healed place).

This discussion aims to debunk misconceptions about intuitive eating and emphasizes the importance of rejecting diet culture, developing self-trust, mindfulness, and joyful movement.

Libby shares personal experiences from her own eating disorder recovery and explains how she turned those experiences into a passion for helping others. The conversation also delves into the idea of fun food versus junk food, and the importance of removing morality labels from all food items, according to the Intuitive Eating approach. Libby highlights the need for a balanced approach to eating, acknowledging that one might gain weight, lose weight or stay the same when they start intuitive eating. The important part, she insists, is understanding that it's not a dieting regime, but rather a means to establish a healthier outlook on food and bring peace with oneself.

Takeaways:

My beef with Intuitive Eating

The role of intuitive eating in recovery

Relearning intuitive eating

The principle of food neutrality

1 Fear switching to intuitive eating

Journey to food freedom

Content Warning: This episode contains a brief mention of suicide ideations. If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek support.

Today Marie Hoag joins me on the show to discuss controversial topic of hormone therapy. Marie is a clinical hormone coach of 20 years specializing in perimenopause and menopause hormone balancing and menopause prevention.

I was eager to learn more about Hormonal Replacement Therapy (bio-identical vs conventional) from someone who has vast clinical experience and stays up with the latest research, which we know is lagging in the area of women's health, particularly hormonal health.

Marie deepened the discussion well beyond bio-identical vs conventional, starting with her own struggles beginning at puberty. Those mood changes and painful periods back then were a harbinger of more serious issues to come!

Takeaways:

  • Depression is a side effect, not an illness
  • Women need estrogen through all stages of life
  • Why hormonal fluctuations can put your entire life off track
  • Hormonal disruptions are not inevitable for women
  • Low estrogen leads to lifelong depressive issues, including higher rates of postpartum depression

Part 2 Interview

Listen into this impromptu conversation (Instagram Live) with last week's guest, Chana Studley (episode 42. Unraveling the Mind-Body Connection: How Trauma Impacts Your Health).

During this conversation we revisit key aspects from our original podcast interview about mindset and safety, now that she is living in a war zone.

I wanted to dive into the concepts of addressing anxiety and feeling safe, amid air raid sirens and explosions.

"Safety is a state of mind," is a concept Chana not only teaches but also lives by.

Takeaways:

  • Plan for the worst and then enjoy life by living in the present
  • We all live in a thought created world
  • We are either present in our lives or we are feeling our thinking

Meet Chana Studley! After experiencing 3 violent attacks in the early 80s she went on to win an Academy Award as part of the team for the movie Babe! She has been coaching and counseling people with trauma, addictions and anxiety for over 30 years, and 6 years ago started writing books about the mind-body connection.

I loved our conversation about the connection between pain, chronic conditions, and state of mind. The body really does keep the score! As Chana says, “we are always feeling our thinking”. Think about that one!

Takeaways:

  • What being an animator taught Chana about bravery
  • Safety is a state of mind
  • We are never broken and we don’t need fixing
  • The role of trauma and chronic pain
  • We’re always feeling our thinking

When we ignore the root cause of a health issue, as modern medicine tends to do, we are simply treating the diagnosis or symptoms. Listen in as Melissa Rose joins me to explains this and so much more. Melissa is a functional medicine practitioner with a specialty in helping others recover from autoimmune issues. Today I'm exploring how singing creates a cascade of wellness that nurtures both mind and body, with my guest, Jen Lobo Rose.

Jen's been teaching voice for over 20 years. She incorporates traditional training with somatic-based, functional exercises (aka, understanding "your body as your instrument"), empathic listening, intuition, humor, and grace! She believes everyone has a right to sing and endeavors to help people learn to sing in a safe, supportive setting for their emotional and mental well-being.

In this episode you'll get to hear Jen's gorgeous singing voice as she walks us through several vocal exercises (I muted my mic. You're welcome!).

Takeaways:

  • If you hate your voice, you're not alone
  • If you were raised to be seen and not heard, singing is a great way to access the power of your voice
  • Everyone can learn to match pitch and develop a great singing voice
  • Discover the health benefits of using your vocal muscles and creating vibrations within the body
  • Ways to add vocalizing to your daily wellness/happiness routine

  • When we sing, we feel better!

We have a bit of a different lineup today. Today I have a guest host here to interview me! We're turning the tables, and I'm handing over the host chair to Sarah Botham... who describes herself as suspicious of health coaches ;)

I hope this conversation inspires you to take steps toward accepting yourself as you are, while also feeling empowered to set some building blocks in place for your own well-being. Good health doesn't happen accidentally!

Takeaways:

  • working in a classroom taught me that developing healthy habits is the best thing a parent can do for their kids
  • why we struggle with weight at every size
  • my first diet at age 14
  • how to work with your body instead of against it
  • exercise vs movement
  • lesser known health benefits of being outside

Have you ever made a plan to start a new, healthy habit and then didn't stick with it? That's because your mindset got in the way. We can all relate! The best plan in the world won't matter if you don't believe in yourself, persevere when things get tough, or know how to get out of your own way.

This is why mindset work is a huge part of my wellness coaching and why I brought in Mindset Coach, Melissa Hoffmann, to share her strategies. When it comes to mindset, the quickest and most powerful way to shift it is to reprogram your subconscious mind to release limiting beliefs and program in new, supportive beliefs.

Melissa is a Mindset Coach & Hypnotherapist for female spiritual entrepreneurs. She helps them to create unshakeable belief in themselves and grow their business by unlocking the power of their subconscious mind to manifest the life and business they want.

Meet my guest, Prajakta Apte. She's a Registered Dietitian and Yoga teacher, trained and certified in Ayurveda. She practices Functional Nutrition and specializes in Gut Health. Like me, Prajakta strongly believes in treating the root causes to her clients' problems rather than putting a band-aid on the symptoms.

Prajakta is a firm believer that good health starts in your gut, and a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can help a person connect their mind and body and provide vibrant energy. And this is why I invited her on the show today to learn more about Ayurveda and how we can apply its principles to our eudaemonia.

Takeaways:

  • a message just for eudaemaniacs

2 tips my psychic channeled for your benefit in today's episode ❤️

  1. start noticing in your life when your body tells you "truth moments"
  2. when you can love the parts of you that feel awkward or weird, it frees up so much of your mental energy and mental space

For my part, the psychic suggested I reach out to my community to ask for a favor. So, here I am humbly (and gratefully!) asking you to share the podcast with 3 of your friends. Whether your friend is interested in psychics or weight loss or managing her ADHD or the mental load of running household or more, I'm confident that there's an episode for everyone, and more to come!!

If you want a quick copy and paste to help with this, just text:

Is your mental load stressing you out? Mine sure was, so I wanted to discuss it with my therapist, Sarah Courtright. She joins the podcast today to discuss mental load, and how we can shift some of the components better so that we can be happier and less stressed.

What you'll learn:

  • how to share your mental load with others
  • 3 P's to reduce the load
  • what to do when there's a task no one wants on the to-do list
  • the role of feelings and how to cut them in half

If you'd like a copy of the mental load checklist we discuss, DM me on IG or email me at emily@emilygeizer.com

Sarah Courtright has been in practice as a counseling psychologist for 15 years and was the first person to introduce the concepts of mental load to me. Sarah specializes in Adlerian, Gestalt, and CBT for individual counseling, as well as Emotion Focused Therapy for couples counseling.

Kiesha Yokers is a certified, trauma-informed breathwork facilitator and somatic life coach. She discovered breathwork during a challenging time in her life, and it was an effective tool to gain clarity and know her next best move. Kiesha's here to teach us some helpful breathwork techniques and to tell us why mindful breathing is so important for our health.

When we intentionally work with our breath breathing patterns, we can shift states to feel to calm or energized, improve sleep, decrease stress hormones, increase comfort and alertness.

This is breathwork. And, it's not just some new age wellness trend. Breathwork is an ancient practice thought to originate from Asia and Africa.

Even though you've likely heard that breathwork is helpful, you may not know where to begin. Kiesha is here to help get us started.
