Being thrust into this experience with the unexpected passing of my 80yr old father 2 weeks ago, I dropped off the radar, stopped creating content in service to others and focused majority of my energy on tackling a task I have never undertaken before.
Being given the role of executor of my father’s estate is not something I was prepared for, it required drawing from experiences and knowledge of other areas of life to pull this off.
It is my hope that sharing this with you will serve you if you find yourself in this role.
I can only really speak from my own experience even though other family members were involved, so what I will share will be from my personal experience of the journey of the last 2 weeks, which taught me so much.

Changing the name of the podcast from ‘Business to Your Own Beat’ to ‘A Life by Design’ was not a decision I made lightly, but it was a quick transition after months of the idea whispering in me in ear & eventually slapping my across the head!
Living a life by design focuses on setting an objective and fostering systems and conditions to support thriving.
‘Business to Your Own Beat’ held that at the core, however the focus on business alone felt lacking in what the bigger picture is… the way we choose to spend our days, where we choose to focus our energy each step of the way is what creates overall prosperity in all areas of life, not just business.
So under the banner of this new podcast title I want to be able expand our conversation & topics to bring awareness to a myriad of elements that our daily choices have… either leading to us reaching our bigger picture vision or hold us back from realising our highest expression.

There were times over my lifetime when I felt more alone in the presence of others.

As a coach, I have heard every excuse under the sun as to why people are not able to reach their goals.

As a society we’ve become more aware about the food we eat, the environments we live in, light sources etc… and yet I think we’ve not been as proactive in understanding the impact of how we drape our human vehicle, the structure that radiates our internal essence as our external expression and also absorbs frequency’s and chemicals that impact our internal system.
But I believe there is even more to it than this, I believe that what we choose to wear including the drape, shape, lines & the accessories has an impact on flow of energy through and around bodies.
We recognise that it is possible to redirect energy in our homes through the ancient practice of Feng Shui according to the placement of objects in our home so why would this not apply to the home that houses our soul & energy bodies.
I’m very excited & a little nervous to announce, that I am currently in the process of finalising a little book titled ‘The [Em]Power Dressing Guidebook’
The focus of this guidebook is based on curating your wardrobe in a way that fosters health & well being on so many levels.

In this episode I want to invite you to think about why you are doing what you are doing, and the way that you are doing it…and then ask yourself if the people you are concerned about thinking you are crazy because of what you are doing and how, are they coming from a place of awareness of what is that is driving your mission & vision?
The greatest impact we can have on others is to lead by example, but we have to be prepared to be seen as whacky, woo woo, out of the box, and waltzing to our own tune, rather than being what is considered ‘normal’.
That is also one of the greatest challenges of being a pioneer.
And yes while there may have been others before you that have been actively stepping out in to the lime light in your chosen industry, that does not necessarily make it easy to pioneer amongst your peers.
So if you hear me say; I don’t care what others think… I don’t mean I don’t care for others, I just mean I can no longer afford to care about what others might think of me doing what is best for me, my children & in turn the collective.

Episode Description:
After hearing another creative openly share that she did not wish to have children and the impact she felt it would have on her creativity, especially as a professional. I want to share my experience of motherhood as a professional creative to give those who may be sitting on the fence about whether or not embark on the journey of motherhood, a perspective on the impact of this on being a creative professional.
My decision to embrace this quest was very intentional after experiencing and witnessing the flow on affect of mother’s resenting the loss of their opportunity to embark on their desired professional journey’s I wanted to break the cycle and explore the option of enjoying both.
Determined not to loose myself in motherhood, even though I feared becoming a mother as I didn't feel like I really knew how to develop a healthy relationship in that area of life after my own experience in my childhood.

There are two barriers I hear clients express most often when it comes to realising their business goals… time & cost.
Because I hear so frequently that time is a barrier for so many, I have been reflecting on what it is that has enabled me to do as much as I have, with all that I have committed to and often sustained for many years.
My recent contemplation made to the realise, that what it comes down to at a foundational level is being prepared, even if I do not have a plan.
Becoming a single mum, in the last few years, and being self-employed I know all too well about these barriers… and have had to be even more savvy when it comes to both of these constraints in order to continue to thrive, rather than merely survive.
In today’s episode I want to focus on the constraint of time.

What does working smarter not harder actually look like in reality?
How do you go from striving with all your might to thriving effortlessly?
In my experience, when living my values, basing my business offerings on those values I seem to open up a portal to receive without even ‘trying’.
You can be given all the systems & strategies that have proven to work for others but if it doesn’t align with your truth then it won’t matter how hard you try it will not work without taking a lot of effort or taking a toll on you, because of the lack of alignment with your truth.
In this episode I share some of my experiences over the last 25+ years in the hope it helps you to reconnect with your inner essence, tune into your intuition, operate in alignment with your values & establish supportive systems and networks that enable you to thrive effortlessly building a sustainable and satisfying business & life… to create a more harmonious life!

How can we ever really know whether or not we made the RIGHT decision?
And is there actually such thing as a WRONG decision?
Hindsight is fabulous, it helps us reflect on what we learn post decision and experience, but does it actually lead us to believing we should have made a different decision in the first place?
At the time of making a decision we do so based on experiences of the past, desires for the future and our discernment in the that present moment… we can only really trust in that our discernment which is based on our understanding at that time, taking the learnings from our past experiences and observations we have made of others around us and seeing their journey.
In this episode I am going to share with you a practice & journal prompts that I have found to be supportive in making decisions & taking aligned action.

What’s the moral of your life story, what themes have you been presented with continually to overcome and work through?
What’s the story behind your business, what inspired you to start?
Why do you do what you do?
When you are faced with challenges and you continue to focus on ways to move through and beyond them, transmuting these challenges into what becomes your medicine that you share with others, providing hope & building connection from your heart to the hearts of those going through a similar challenge who may be thinking that’s just the way things are and that there’s not way to change it… seeing you move through a similar challenge offers encouragement, even ideas for how to go about changing things that they themselves may not have considered.

Life is one long journey of discovering how to best operate our human vehicle unlike the mechanical vehicle we purchase this does not come with a manual with all the do’s & don’ts and troubleshooting recommendations… or does it!
Our genetic make up is the foundation of our structure, but how we treat it, what we do to maintain or destroy it is what determines our outcomes.
Our modern day lifestyle has detached us from the practice of truly understanding what serves our vehicle. With the focus being on our mental understanding of things and the detachment from tuning into our intuition?
Fortunately though, we are now in an era where option to combine of the two is available to us.
Understanding what works for you also allows you to plan your business activities around what serves for your human vehicle.
What I share in this episode is quite vulnerable and some may think it’d be best left unsaid, that keeping these experiences like this to ourselves is more beneficial in the healing process.
But since I am working very closely with guidance from my intuition & inner knowing, taking instruction from my higher self awareness you could say, I felt called to share my journey & process not for it to be witnessed by others but to offer support to others in their journey.
So if you too are going through your own transmutation journey and feel like what’s happening inside of you sets you apart from others, I want you to know you are not alone and while our journey’s are unique and we feel like we are the only ones going through these experiences.
I pulled out my journal and wrote the words; “What the Fuck is all of this about? I’m so beyond over all of this… I’m really struggling to see the point of my existence & the so called higher purpose. I don’t even know what to do in the now let alone next…”
I have been doing so much work on myself over many many years… the experience over the weekend I believe was actually the end of a cycle.

Embodiment starts with awareness of self, knowing what enlivens you, what dampens your spirit, what empowers you and what triggers you to feel inadequate, defensive, unworthy… not to avoid those encounters but understand what is behind your response and where you can place energy & attention to transmute those shadow patterns.
As well as, awareness of what makes you feel like you’re held & supported by your environment… knowing when these aspects need to change to support you in your next iteration of your evolution where embodiment looks and feels slightly different, or maybe even very different.
I now find myself allowing the inspiration to be expressed and trust that the skills and techniques I have acquired over many years of trying, testing, honing my crafting skills bringing me to a point where the embodiment of those skills now just expresses itself through me.

When we dig deeper into what it is that holds us back from fully expressing ourselves, not just in the way of singing, but speaking our truth, sharing our perspective, disagreeing without trying to be controversial, but just because we’re seeing things from another point of view, or perhaps we fear to speak because we can’t quite formulate the so called ‘right words’ or our choice of words according to someone else is not the best choice of words for that situation… the judgment we fear receiving is potentially based more on our own self judgement.
Don’t let fear of judgement hold you back from expressing yourself through words or sound, while not all will appreciate your expression, there will be those who are ever so grateful for the fact that you’re sharing your voice.

A couple of weekends ago I had the pleasure of being invited to attend a 'Creatives’ Recharge Retreat’ which was put on by Southern Tablelands Arts an organisation that supports, creates, educates and advocates for the arts in our region. This weekend retreat was the finale event of their ‘Peer 2 Peer Mentoring Program’.
The magic that took place over that weekend is not easy describe in words, it really was more something to experience…
The experience of that weekend and the conversations shared amongst creative professionals really got me thinking about the role creatives play in the collective.
Are making space in your daily life for creative expression? If you’ve set aside that which lights you up from in the inside in order to fulfil obligations that simply help you pay the bills, I’d like to encourage you to re-think that and realise that… when you are lit up from the inside out you radiate a magnetism that draws towards you more of what you need to continue to thrive, don’t let your illuminated way be overshadowed by fear or doubt or whether or not what you desire is a worthy or worthwhile pursuit, if your heart desires it then it is a part of your calling, not engaging in your creative gifts robs others of receiving your magic which is a part of your contribution to the collective.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Are there so many good things coming your way all at once or challenges being presented like an avalanche… some times we experience both ends of the spectrum at once.
Either way the feeling of overwhelm is disorienting and can leave us feeling like our life is spinning out of control, that we’re ungrounded, untethered even.
A practice I’ve found very helpful in this regard is what I would like to share with you, there is an app I recommend to so many people you’d think I receive a finders fee for people using it, but I don’t… I just truly value what it has done for me, the app is called The Triple Flame App, created by the Gene Keys organisation.
Lately I have used it to take myself through my own guided visualisation, to help me to connect with what it is my inner guide is trying to bring to my attention that I may be overlooking in all the chaos of change & opportunities being presented to me that have led me to feel al little off centre.
In this episode I’d like to guide you through a visualisation to hopefully help you re-align if you’re feeling a sense of overwhelm too.

When I think of all the stories I’ve told myself over the years that I would have considered at the time, failures or limiting beliefs… I also can’t help but think that I am not still in the same place, struggling with those same obstacles which has lead me to consider that perhaps they were not really failures.
Like the fact that I did not pass English in high school and put it down to having parents who migrated to this country before I was born and for them English being their second language, which created a story in my mind that I never really had the support at home to help foster my English skills, especially when it came to reading & writing.
Add to that, the fact that neither of parents even completed high school, my father only made it to great 6 and mother year 10… so again I carried the story that I was not being raised in a family of educated academics, so how could I expect to become one, let alone master the basics at the higher school education level.

Dr Suzanne Moss guides her students to explore and unfold their unique visual language through abstraction and meditative art methods. While undergoing treatment for serious illness, an epiphany during 2011 altered her life course and led to the development of her programs. Today’s episode is made up of a portion of a webinar I I presented, as a part of the Digital Solutions Program titled ‘Newsletter: Frequency, Format & Style, I saw a need for this topic as it kept presenting itself in coaching sessions, clients saying they felt they needed to be producing a newsletter but didn’t know where to begin or what to write about but the biggest obstacle seemed to be that they felt they would be annoying people by sending information directly to their inbox.
In this webinar I started off with sharing the analogy of a sunflower, placing its efforts into thriving to serve the wildlife that it’s designed to support, it does’t try to convince an eagle to feed off it’s seeds when an eagle is nourished by small animals, instead it chooses to thrive in a spot that the birds who will be served by the goodness it produces will be attracted to it, these being little finches & rosella’s for example.
Your newsletter is like the sunflower to a finch, it serves it’s needs so you should not be shy to share the goodness you are producing that would nourish the needs of your target audience.

As well as reflecting on the fact that 5 years ago what I would have imagined would not have been this… but I have to say, 5 years later being in a position where I get to press the reset & recalibrate button on so many aspects of my life, including my business… it’s a lot more liberating in the present than the life I’d imagined for myself back then.

What you have overcome?
How you have evolved as a business owner, even just as an individual?
What have you let go of?
It can be just as powerful to reflect on what you continued to put energy towards and your efforts never quite led to the results you were after, then accepting that this outcome would actually not serve your highest good…

Last month I presented a workshop as a part of the Yass Valley Small Business Month Workshop Series hosted by our local council and business chamber.
This was a shared workshop with Anthony Eldridge from Actionology & myself, we were tasked with presenting a workshop on the topic of My Business Health, the title of our workshop was Cultivating Business Wellness: Navigating Mental Health, Cashflow & People.
In today’s episode I am going to share my component of this workshop and a little extra which I did not get share in the workshop.
The reason I am doing this is because the feedback received from this intimate in person workshop was that more people need to know about this… and since the podcast is a platform that allows information to be shared far beyond the initial delivery I thought this would be a great way to spread the message beyond the Yass Valley.

Do you fear being seen? Showing up in your social media feeds? Recording yourself on video? Having your photo taken?
So what causes us to fear being seen?
Have you considered the disadvantage from not being seen? Especially as a business owner, selling your product or service.
If instead you put your focus towards who you are serving and how you can help them with their challenge or issue, taking the focus off what is not so ‘perfect’ about you.
Especially when you’re sharing a way of overcoming a challenge that you yourself have experienced & worked through, knowing it deep in your bones through your lived experience has more power in that than knowing something theoretically.

In this episode I share an example from my own experience recently, on how easy it can be to let comparison creep in and potentially hold you back from stepping into your power.
I am constantly expressing how much I believe that we all have our unique thread to add to the collective tapestry but I too have moments where I too fall into the trap of comparing myself and letting fear of not being enough creep in and stop me in my tracks.
But I have also developed skills, practices and habits to get myself back out from the little dark nook I find myself hiding in as I contemplate whether or not I am truly worthy… and then step out into the light again and do what I’m here to do & serve how I am here to serve.
I also share three simple tips on what you can do to help yourself out of a little dark nook that you might find yourself in, comparing yourself to others feeling like you may not be enough.

I’m a big believer in prevention rather than cure and that when we choose to engage in daily habits and practices that support us through out our journey we move through our days with more ease & flow.
Working with the lunar cycle plays a key role, understanding the energetics of each phase allows you to decide to what to focus on, what exercises to do at different phases and stages and even what foods to eat during those phases to support your over all well being.
Another way I like to look at it is in terms of gardening, we prepare the soil to support growth of the seed we plant, and once we plant the seed we tend to in a way that supports in taking those next steps of germinating and breaking out of the darkness to reach the light in order to draw what it requires from that light source to thrive, but still requires water and other nutrients to support that little seedling to become a full blown plant that then produces fruit.
That’s what understanding each phase and stage of the moon’s cycle does for us, it helps us develop practices that nurture, tend & support our growth & expansion and bare the fruits of our efforts.
Actually effort is not the right word to use here because it’s not so much about putting in effort it’s about ‘being’ a plant does not put in effort to produce the fruit it develops a way of being that enables the fruit to form.

It’s so nice to be back for Season 2 of ‘Business to Your Own Beat’.
Thank you for joining me again after my little wintering period, there was so much value in taking the time to go inwards, deeply reflect & connect back to my inner knowing.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of just going, going, going, pushing through & powering on, especially when you work for yourself and you know that no work can mean no income…
But it is also extremely important as a sole trader in particular to allow yourself time to rest rejuvenate, reassess & reignite the flame especially when your energy levels start to run low and you find yourself wondering if what you’re doing is even making a difference to anyone else out there!
I’m a big believer in the fact that we all have our unique thread to contribute to the collective tapestry, but believing in what you’re offering is the spark that ignites the flame, that fuels you to keep going… and when that starts to dim it’s a sign it’s time to stop, to reassess & reconnect.
Which is exactly what I’ve been doing over the past few weeks.

Here in Australia it’s now August, and the last weeks of winter are before us, in business I’ve always found August replicates nature’s seasonal cycles and is a really quiet reflective & restorative time, before the burst of new growth and all that busyness that comes with onset of spring.
As I’ve shared in previous episodes I myself have been going through a personal season of winter in my life cycle.
I may not have used those words exactly but that is the realisation I have now reached.
Over the last 15mths, I’ve had to let go of so many aspects of the life I created.
A life that I actually loved but clearly a life that was no longer serving me.
While I tried so hard to hold onto my marriage, my commercial space, collaborations and even my beloved car…
The universe has in no uncertain terms let me know it is time let go and retreat into a winter phase of my own in preparation for the transformation in to the next phase of my existence.
Recently I’ve been reading this beautiful book called ‘Wintering’ by Katherine May and I’d like to read part of it to you as it expresses exactly what I am speaking on here.

The title of this podcast episode includes the phrase ‘courage comes before confidence’ which often used in motivational speak, not to be dismissive of your feelings…
But quite the opposite in fact, to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and realise your potential.
The only way you can do that is to take action even when you feel like you don’t yet have all the tools you need and you’re not quite ready…
in truth you’ll never be 100% ready and you’ll never have all the tools you need until you experience what you’re resisting doing, starting, taking action on.
It’s through the doing that you will discover the answers you seek, acquire the tools you need to grow & expand.

No-one else can actually know what’s best for you, your business, your journey.
Leaving decisions in the hands of others or blaming them for the result of your choices will only serve to hold you back from building trust in your own inner knowing.

A place to make is not all you need as a creative starting a venture that you wish to turn into a serious income stream, you also need a space dream, to plan, to do the administration & financial work that most creatives dread… and the last thing you need it to be looking for things in several locations around the house to get started on a project or complete a critical administration task.
I cannot place enough emphasis on how beneficial it is to set yourself up a space to get you into business mode.
When you do business to your own beat it’s all about trial & error, test, tweak & adapt… there’s no right or wrong really, it’s all learning.
Right now I’m in the process of preparing to open my workspace up to share with others offering intentional crafting workshops here in my studio shed.

So, how long will it take to reach your goals, your objectives, you desires, to create the life & business of your dreams?
How long do you think it should take?
My perspective on that is there’s really no exact time frame that you can pinpoint as to when you will reach your peak state… or the success you desire.
You can set a timeframe, put a plan & action into place to reach that goal, but just because you’ve allocated a timeline to it doesn’t mean that’s exactly when you’ll reach your desired outcome, it could be sooner than or later than you think.
It’s not just your plan that’s important, its the nurturing, tending, allowing, providing of the right conditions & observing what’s serving the objective & what’s not… along the way.

Creating your unique career path is filled with trials, tribulations, divine alignments, moments of sheer bliss because you can’t believe you get to call what you do your job!
But with that comes ambiguity, those in regular 9-5, job description advertised jobs will find it very hard to understand what you do and even how you can call it work, especially when you’re smiling from ear to ear saying how much you love your work.

Jill Blackburn is the founder of Outback Spiritual Festival which will run for the first time this year in August… out at Broken Hill which Jill refers to as being in the ‘middle of everywhere’.

It can be easy to focus on all that’s not happening for you and overlook what is.
In order to attract more of the outcomes & desires we wish to receive in life we first need to recognise the good we already have and demonstrate to the universe that we are a grateful participant in life, so we can become a magnet for more, rather than repel the good we’re being gifted because we’re so focused on what’s not working for us.
When you’re focused on being that source of aliveness, hope, inspiration for others in your business offering people will be drawn to you because they wish to have more of that in their own lives.

The process of closing my commercial space was a much bigger job than I anticipated it would be, physically, mentally & emotionally, but on the other side of this process I’ve realised just how valuable my embodiment of cyclical living has been.
Following my own methodology ‘La Lunar Living’ I was very intentional through out the process, staggering the exit in alignment with the phases of the lunar & my personal cycle, which meant it was less taxing on my nervous system, by the end of the process I was exhausted, but not completely depleted, and still had a big smile on my face that I could not wipe off, because I felt so complete.

The day I recorded this podcast it was my 48th birthday, and with all the changes taking place in my life I shared vulnerably what this transition has been like even though the cycle of change has not yet reached its completion, in the hope that my sharing assists you in navigating challenges you may be going through too.

If you’re doing what you think you should rather than what lights you up then you’re going to be fed posts that frustrate you because they don’t align with what you’re really about.
The internet can work in our favour or against us, depending on how we choose to use it.
Over the years I’ve come to realise that when I use it in ways that does align with what I truly value I am then fed posts that lead to me feeling frustrated by what’s showing up.

When we choose to do what makes feel good, truly feel good about ourselves the energy field we carry out into our interactions with others then activates them into feeling good too.
In the same way that when we walk around carrying a weight of disappointment, dissatisfaction & regret, that energy affects those we come in contact with too.
If we are connected to ourselves, the essence of who we are, and we operate from that place, rather than from a place of doing what we think we ‘should do’ being how we think we ‘should be’ then we are naturally going to emit high vibes, because it feels good to be who we are naturally, and it’s so draining trying to be something we are not in order too meet the expectations of others.

I’ve attracted many low vibe experiences in my lifetime and previously I found ways to distract myself or suppress the feelings, or I’d simply walk away from them, at times I’d even run and not look back.
This time however I’ve chosen to stay and sit in the feelings, let it pass through rather than shove down into a pocket of my body to avoid feeling.
I found myself earlier in the week, last week, thinking about what I knew would be a low vibe experience in the up coming weekend, dreading the thought of it, as it dredged up all my thoughts around unworthiness, I justified in head why this was happening to me based on all my flaws.
In this episode I share with you the journey of the highs & lows and how I chose to balance out this low vibe emotional experience in way that worked in my favour rather than take me deeper into a sadness of my situation.

If there’s one thing that makes people starting a business squirm it’s usually pricing… but it’s the one thing you can’t avoid addressing and really can’t afford to get wrong, because without profit in your business you can’t grow or sustain your offering.
In my experience of both running a service based business & then product based business the issue of pricing remains the same, confidence in asking the price for the value you provide.
You’ll notice that in creative industries you’ll have a mixed bag of makers & designers you’ll sell along side of, from those who do it purely for the fun of it and those who do it to earn their living and everything in between.
Which makes it really difficult to have an industry standard set, you need to set the standard for yourself and stand behind it.
