In the last episode of the first season, Emma and Smilla meet Jürgen Tiedje, Head of Unit, European Commission's Directorate General for Research and Innovation. Tiedje talks about the biggest challenges for future production processes. He addresses digitization as one of these challenges and highlights the importance of SMEs not being left behind. In addition, Tiedje addresses environmental challenges facing manufacturing.

What is additive manufacturing? What possibilities does the technology have? What are the benefits? In this episode of the Industry 5.0 Leaders Podcast, we learn about additive manufacturing. Smilla and Emma meet Valeria Tirelli, the CEO of AIDRO, which is an Italian additive manufacturing company focused on metal 3D printing. In today´s episode, Emma and Smilla meet David Romero, professor in advanced manufacturing at Tecnológico de Monterrey University in Mexico. Together they discuss issues like inclusive initiatives, future challenges for manufacturing, and the upcoming industry 5.0. Professor Romero has worked a lot with the concept of Operator 4.0, which describes the smart and skilled operator who performs cooperative work with robots as well as with machines. Professor Romero´s research is at the forefront of industry´s development, focusing on the human in production.

During the annual World Manufacturing Forum (WMF) in Italy, Emma and Smilla also got the chance to learn more about EIT Manufacturing. As one pillar of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), EIT Manufacturing works with bringing Europe's manufacturers together. In this episode, Klaus Beetz, CEO of EIT Manufacturing explains the vision of EIT Manufacturing and highlights the importance of attracting young talent, not least empowering women who are underrepresented in hierarchical higher positions. Also, Emma and Smilla talk to Carolina Torregrossa Gallo, program manager at EIT Manufacturing, who works with bridging the skill gap that exists among industry workforce. She calls to young talents to start a career in manufacturing industry. Carolina's final words in the episode: "Dream big! What you do can make a difference! You can change the world!".
