The state championship road continues as seven teams looking to win a state title as the Missouri State High School Activities Association state finals head to the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo., this weekend. Plus, John Burroughs started the weekend off with a state title on the diamond.
The John Burroughs baseball squad won their first state championship in baseball since 2002 and their fourth overall crown with a 9-4 victory over Springfield Catholic Thursday evening at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark, Mo. The Bombers advanced to the state final game with a 5-1 win over Fulton as John Schenck earned the win on the mound with a complete game outing while striking out seven batters to finish his year with a perfect 7-0 mark.
In the championship game, John Burroughs left no doubt early on as they exploded for six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Irish cut the lead in half in the top of the second as they plated three runs of their own to make the score 6-3 but that would not be enough as the Bombers added a run in the third and a pair of runs in the fifth to bring the title home. Griffin Barnett paced the Burroughs attack by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs while Ahmad Muhammad went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in as well to lift the Bombers to the title. Jack Brantingham was outstanding on the mound as he moved his season record to 10-0 with a 6.1 inning outing that saw him surrender three hits and strikeout 13 batters.
The weekend at the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park will start Friday at 10 a.m. with Villa Duchesne heading to the state semifinals for the first time in school history after they defeated Borgia 1-0 in the state quarterfinals last weekend. The Saints scored an early goal by Hope Kleeman off an assist from Taylor Brown to give Villa an early 1-0 lead and leaned on Grace Banac in goal to secure the win. Villa Duchesne heads into the state finals with a 9-11-1 record and will face off against Saxony Lutheran out of Cape Girardeau who defeated Metro 2-0 in the quarterfinals. The Crusaders come in with a record of 12-8 and will make their third trip to the final four as they look for their third state championship. The winner of this semifinal will face the winner of Tolton and Bishop LeBlond Saturday at 11 a.m.
In Class 2, we will see Clayton making their first trip to the state semifinals as they will face defending state champions, Whitfield Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Greyhounds moved on in the state tournament with a thrilling 3-2 win over St. Pius X out of Festus. The two teams scored a pair of goals in the first half before the Greyhounds scored the winning goal early in the first overtime period to gain the win. Lucy Melander, Rachel Van Rhine, and Stella Whitney all scored for Clayton as they improve to 11-10 on the year. The Warriors needed to head to penalty kicks in their contest as they defeated Orchard Farm 2-1 to improve to 15-1 on the season. Mia Devouax scored to aid the Warriors to their second straight semifinal appearance as Whitfield will look for their second straight state championship. The winner will face either Pleasant Hill or St. Pius X of Kansas City Saturday at 4 p.m.
In a loaded Class 3 field, Ursuline will take on two-time defending champion Fort Zumwalt South in the first semifinal Friday at 11 a.m. The Bears are coming off a 7-0 win over St. Vincent in which Mary Claire Imig and Katherine Kozeny each scored a pair of goals to aid Ursuline to a 16-5-1 record on the year. The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals with a 7-1 win over Incarnate Word Academy in the quarterfinals. Brooke Cattoor and Audrey Smith paced the Bulldogs with a pair of goals as Fort Zumwalt South improved to 20-4 on the year. The winner will face off against either Union or Smithville Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Class 4 semifinals are loaded as well as Nerinx Hall will face Lafayette in the first semifinal Friday at 4 p.m. The Markers are looking to avenge a pair of runner-up finishes over the past two years as they knocked off Jackson in the quarterfinals 2-0 this past Saturday. Emma Gianino and Nina Preusser each scored in the quarterfinal win as the Makers improved to 18-2-1 on the year. Lafayette moved on to the state semifinals for the first time in 17 years with a 3-2 victory over upstart Liberty. Allie Kinner paced the Lancers, who scored a pair of goals while Hadley Hendrickson added another score to aid the Lancers to an 18-3 record on the year. The two teams matched up earlier this year with Lafayette gaining a 1-0 win. The winner of this match will face either Kickapoo or Liberty North Saturday at 7 p.m.

It will be a huge weekend on the prep sports scene as four local teams will look to repeat as state champions on the second weekend of the Missouri State High School Activities Association State Track and Field Meet while the area’s girls’ soccer teams take the pitch in hopes of advancing to the state semifinals next weekend as the quarterfinals will happen Saturday afternoon.

The Class 3 thru 5 track and field athletes will head to Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City for the second weekend of action in the state capital. The Westminster boys and girls will move up in class in hopes to repeat as state champions while the Parkway Central and Cardinal Ritter girl’s squads will attempt to win consecutive state crowns.
In Class 3 boy’s action, Herculaneum may be one of the teams to beat after they won the sectional team title last weekend while Lutheran South earned the second slot at the sectional held at Hillsboro. Sam Vaughn will lead the Blackcats hopes as he took first in the 3200-meter run in a time of 10:07.35 and then grabbed second place in the 1600-meter with a mark of 4:35.13 as he finished behind teammate Nathaniel Wright who won the 1600-meter with a time of 4:33.86. Wright will also take part in the 800-meter run after a third-place finish at the sectional. Adam Snoke of Lutheran South will take part in three events as he won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.08 and then earned a third-place finish in the 1600-meter and a second-place finish in the 3200-meter runs.
In Class 3 girls’ action, Metro and Lutheran South will be a pair of teams to watch as they performed well in the sectional over the weekend. Leah Macon-Ford will lead the way for Metro as she won both the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.48 and the 200-meter dash with a mark of 26.58. Metro will also look to get points in the distance races as Lucy Luetkemeyer won a pair of events at the sectional as she took home the title in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:28.56 and then she won the 3200-meter run with a mark of 12:03.79. Lutheran South will lean on junior Reese Schelp as she will take part in three events this weekend. Schelp placed second in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs while placing third in the 3200-meter.
In Class 4 boys, Hillsboro and Festus look to be part of a large group of athletes that will chase the team title. The Hawks will see Noah Holland in three events as he won the 200-meter in a time of 22.30 and then earned a second-place finish in the 100-meter and a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter. Ian Schram of Festus will look to add team points as he won the 1600-meter in a time of 4:20.95 and the 3200-meter with a mark of 9:27.78. Antwon McKay from Cardinal Ritter also won a pair of events as he took home the title in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.
Cor Jesu will be a team to watch in Class 4 as they won the team title at the sectional as Adrienne Luna will run in both distance events after winning the 3200-meter and placing second in the 1600-meter runs while Hillsboro’s Emily Wright will also run in two events after winning both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles last weekend. Skye Lee from Parkway Central will lead the Colts as they look to win consecutive state titles as she won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and then took home the titles in both hurdle events.
In Class 5 action on the boy’s side, Ryan Wingo from St. Louis University High will be a man to watch in the sprints as he placed second in the 100-meter and third in a loaded 200-meter field at the sectional in Poplar Bluff. Graham Stevener of Kirkwood will pace the Pioneers’ efforts as he won the 800-meter and 1600-meter while Joseph Anderson of Westminster will lead the Wildcats’ hopes of repeating as he won the Triple Jump and placed third in the Long Jump.
The Cardinal Ritter girls will have a big group of athletes taking part in the Class 5 girls meet as Aniyah Brown will run in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races with Charlye Moody taking part in both the 200-meter and 400-meter after third-place finishes in both events. A’laji Bradley of Pattonville will help the Pirates in the team chase as she won all three sprinting events in the sectionals last weekend while Julia Ray from MICDS continues to be one of the top distance runners in the state after winning both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs.
The quarterfinals in the MSHSAA Girls Soccer tournament will happen this Saturday as 14 teams will look to advance to the state semifinals next weekend at the WorldWide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton.
Metro will take on Saxony Lutheran Saturday in Cape Girardeau at 3 p.m. in one of the four Class 1 quarterfinals after defeating Maplewood-Richmond Heights in overtime to claim a district title. Metro will carry a 13-6 record into the match Saturday. Villa Duchesne will host Borgia in the other local semifinal Saturday at noon. Saints are 8-11-1 on the year and defeated Elsberry 6-2 to advance while the Knights are 10-14-1 after defeating Crocker 5-1 to move on in the tournament.
In a pair of local matchups in Class 2, St. Pius X out of Festus will look to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive year as they will host Clayton Saturday at noon. The Lancers are 20-5-1 on the season after beating Perryville 1-0 to move on while the Greyhounds will take a 10-10 record into the contest after defeating St. Charles 5-0 in the district final. In the other quarterfinal, both Orchard Farm and Whitfield will look to make a return trip to the semifinals as they will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Orchard Farm. The Eagles are 13-8 on the year after defeating Duchesne 5-2 in the district final and will look to improve on last year’s runners-up finish in the state while the Warriors move up a class after winning Class 1 last year and will take a 14-1 record into the contest.
The two-time state champions in Class 3 return to the quarterfinals as Fort Zumwalt South will travel to Incarnate Word to take on the Red Knights Saturday at noon. The Bulldogs are 19-4 on the year after defeating Fort Zumwalt East 6-1 to claim the district crown while IWA upset No. 1 in the state John Burroughs 3-2 to advance with a 6-8-1 mark on the year. Ursuline will attempt to make their third straight appearance in the semifinals, traveling to Perryville to take on St. Vincent Saturday at noon. The Bears are 15-5-1 after needing a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the district final over Webster Groves.
In Class 4, Nerinx Hall will once again look to get to the semifinals as they will travel south to take on Jackson Saturday at noon. The Markers are 17-2-1 after defeating St. Joseph’s 3-2 in the district final and will look to get a state title that has eluded them over the past few years. In the other quarterfinal, Lafayette will head to Wentzville to take on upstart Liberty in the other quarterfinal as the Lancers are 17-3 on the year after defeating Marquette 1-0 for the district title. The Eagles are 18-4-2 on the year and advanced after winning the district crown 3-0 over Howell Central.

The championship season is upon us as spring sports begin to wind down. The Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1 and 2 State Track and Field meet will take place this weekend while the quarterfinals are set for the Missouri State Volleyball tournament after district play this past week. District action is also taking place on the soccer field as many area teams have moved on to the state quarterfinal round.
Let’s get caught up on all the action in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break sponsored by Triad Bank.
Things will get kicked off at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City as the Class 1 and 2 athletes will compete starting Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the finals in many field events and a few running events while the prelims in most of the running events will take place.
In Class 2, Christian High School out of O’Fallon will lead many of the local boys’ teams down in the Capital City as they placed third in the team race at the sectional this past weekend. Jefferson R7 finished right behind the Eagles in fourth place while Bishop DuBourg earned a 10th-place finish.
Keenan Thomas of Bishop DuBourg will compete in the 100-meter dash after winning the sectional with a time of 11.08 and he will also compete in the Long Jump after a fourth-place finish at the sectional. David Sides will join his teammate as he earned a fourth-place finish in the Shot Put with a toss of 13.11m. Ronan Hardwicke of Christian will take part in a pair of events as he earned a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.09 and then he grabbed third in the 1600-meter run with a mark of 4:35.00. The Eagles will also see Austin Ball in two events as he won both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles with times of 14.97 and 43.11 respectfully. Konner Armstrong will lead the efforts for Jefferson R7 as he also won a pair of events at the sectionals. Armstrong won the Shot Put with a throw of 15.20m and then he took home the discus title with a toss of 44.05m.
On the girls’ side in Class 2, Jefferson R7 placed second at the sectional while Lutheran North earned the third spot and St. Pius X finished fourth in the team battle. Brentwood and Duchesne rounded out the top 10 by finishing ninth and 10th in the team standings. Margaret Wrigley will pace the Jefferson R7 squad as she placed second in two events at the sectionals as she ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.52 and then clocked a time of 25.64 in the 200-meter dash. The Lancers had two athletes win events as Payten Krodinger won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.08 while Rachel Eimer won the sectional title with a mark of 5:36.15. Eimer will also compete in the 800-meter run after a third-place finish with a time of 2:31.25.
The quarterfinals of the Missouri Boys Volleyball State Tournament will take place starting Friday evening as the top seeds in both Classes as De Smet won their district in Class 3 while Howell Central took the district crown in Class 4.
The Spartans will open quarterfinal play Friday at 4:30 p.m. as they will take on Saxony Lutheran at Webster Groves. In the other quarterfinal at Webster, Whitfield will play St. Michael the Archangel out of Kansas City at 6:30 p.m. In the second set of Class 3 quarterfinals, Fort Zumwalt South will take on St. Dominic at 11 a.m. at Howell North while Webster Groves will matchup against Affton Saturday at noon at St. Louis University High School.
Howell Central will start quarterfinal play on Class 4 Friday evening against Vianney at 6:15 p.m. at Lafayette while the host Lancers will face Marquette in the opener at Lafayette stated to start at 4:15 p.m. Rockhurst out of Kansas City will make the trip east to play Parkway South at 1 p.m. at Howell North while the Jr. Bills will play host to Chaminade in the final quarterfinal match starting at 2 p.m.
District play in girls’ soccer is in full swing as many of the top teams are still vying for a spot in the state quarterfinals next week.
In Class 1, Metro continued their outstanding season by defeating Maplewood-Richmond Heights 1-0 in overtime to advance to the quarterfinals. They will join Borgia in the next round as the Knights defeated Crocker 5-1 to win their district. A pair of district finals will take place Friday as Saxony Lutheran will face Gateway Science Charter while Villa Duchesne will take on Elsberry/Silex Friday as well.
In Class 2, St. Pius X out of Festus will move on after defeating top-seeded Perryville 1-0 while Orchard Farm advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over Duchesne. In the other district finals, Clayton advanced with a 5-0 win over St. Charles while Whitfield continued their quest to return to the final four with a 2-1 win over Westminster.
While in Class 3 action, defeating Class 3 state champions Fort Zumwalt South moved on to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 win over district rival Fort Zumwalt East 6-1. In the other district finals in Class 3, the top school in Class 3 Bombers of John Burroughs will face Incarnate Word Friday at 5 p.m. while Webster Groves, who knocked off top-seeded Visitation 3-1 will face Ursuline who dispatched Cor Jesu 2-0.
The Class 4 district finals did not disappoint as Jackson defeated Oakville 2-1 to claim a district title while in a battle of top teams in the area, Nerinx Hall defeated St. Joseph’s Academy for the second time this season 3-1 to take home the title. In the third district final on this side of the state, Lafayette knocked off top-seeded Marquette 1-0. In the final district championship, Howell Central will take on Liberty Friday evening at 6 p.m.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association is set to welcome a new sport starting in 2023-2024 while another was granted emerging sport status after the voting by the state’s administrators. Big coaching news broke early Friday morning as a long-time coach is moving overseas to continue his career. Also, the Water Polo championships are set after the semifinals were contested.

Boys’ Volleyball will be the newest addition to MSHSAA as the administrators from the state overwhelmingly voted to make the sport a fully sanctioned sport. The new status will take effect beginning in the 2023-24 school year and will have one class, to begin with. The state championship will be contested between May 26-June 1 in 2024 at a site that will be announced later this summer. This is a huge step for the sport as the coaches in the St. Louis area have done an outstanding job in promoting and growing boys’ volleyball to get the sport to this point.
The sport of STUNT was voted as an emerging sport beginning next school year during that same vote by the state’s administrators. STUNT is a combination of cheering and tumbling with scoring taking place for each mini performance that they do. There will be no state championship for STUNT as it will be an emerging sport and will be governed by USA Cheer.
In coaching news, CBC head basketball coach Justin Tatum announced early Friday morning that he is stepping down to move to Australia to coach in the NBL. Tatum has been at CBC for 10 years and led them to a pair of state titles after he led Soldan to a state championship in 2012.
The finals for the Missouri State Volleyball playoffs were set over the past few days as the championship matches are set for Saturday at Pattonville.
In the girls’ tournament, Marquette and Ladue advanced to the final match after wins in the semifinals. The Mustangs defeated Parkway North 10-7 in overtime in the first semifinal while Ladue defeated Lindbergh 16-3.
Parkway North grabbed an early lead with a goal in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, but the second period saw both teams score three times as the Vikings took a 4-3 advantage into the break. Parkway North extended the lead to 6-4 after three periods only to see the Mustangs pull the match even by outscoring the Vikings 3-1 in the fourth period to tie the match at 7-7 and force to extra sessions. The overtime periods were all Marquette as the Mustangs held Parkway North scoreless while scoring three times to advance to the final.
In the second semifinal, Ladue raced out to an early lead and never looked back as Mila Winkelmann scored nine goals and added five assists to spark the Rams attack in the victory. Addie Wedding added five goals with Liza Yanuck chipping in with a pair of scores to propel the Rams to the title game Saturday at Pattonville.
On the boys’ side, St. Louis University High School survived a rematch from last year’s championship match by defeating Parkway West 12-10 while the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Parkway Central rolled to the title game with a 17-5 win over Lindbergh.
The Colts used a balanced offensive attack to advance to the championship as Tyler Bryant, Peyton Dimmock, and William Jost all scored four goals while Quin Wolff chipped in with three goals. Bryant also dished out six assists on the night as the Colts will look to improve upon last year’s result as they finished in third place.
The Jr. Bills leaned on goalkeeper Josh Niemann to continue their quest for another title as he made nine saves in the match and was terrific. Evan Zimmermann had a game-high six goals to pace the SLUH attack while Brandon Harris and Aidan Brawer each scored twice while Brawer added three assists as the Jr. Bills and Colts will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pattonville.
It will be a jammed pack weekend as girls’ soccer heads to the district stage of the season with many districts starting on Saturday. The boys’ volleyball districts will be in full swing this weekend at many sites around the area as well.
Track and Field will also have their district competitions Saturday as Cape Notre Dame, Timberland, and Herculaneum will host the Class 3 runners with Cape Notre Dame, Ladue, Parkway Central, and North Point hosting Class 4 districts. In Class 5, SLUH, Parkway Central, and Timberland will host loaded districts. Action will begin at many of those sites at 9 a.m.

The week in high school sports saw district golf championships as three local teams earned a trip to the boys’ golf championships while a pair of hotly contested conference races in baseball were finalized after action on the diamond this week. The Missouri Water Polo Championships will open up play this weekend at many pools around the area.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association Boys’ Golf Championships are 10 days away as one of the districts held its tournament this past week to see who will advance to the state tournament.
In Class 5, The CBC Boys’ golf team won their district at Crystal Highlands Golf Course in Festus by firing a team score of 301. Chaminade earned the second spot and a trip to the state championships in the team chase with a score of 315 with Jackson placing third with a score of 320. St. Louis University High School earned the fourth slot in the team standings, scoring 326. In the individual scoring, Ian Lambert of Jackson earned medalist honors with an even-par score of 72 while Nathan Barclay and Austin Jacobs paced the CBC efforts by finishing tied for second with Harrison Zipfel of SLUH with scores of 1-over par 73’s. Harper Ackermann of CBC tied for fifth with Clayton Becher of Chaminade with scores of four-over par 76.

On the diamond, the GAC South has been a conference to watch all year as both Fort Zumwalt West and Howell have been not only state-ranked all season, but both have been battling for the top slot in the league. The two teams matched up in a pair of games this week with the Vikings only needing a win in the series to claim the title, but the Jaguars had other ideas as they won both matchups to earn co-champion honors.
In the opening game Tuesday at Howell, the Vikings grabbed an early 2-0 lead after the first inning only to see Zumwalt West score five runs over the next three innings to take a 5-1 advantage. The Vikings plated a run in the home half of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Jaguars pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth to push their lead to 9-3. Howell scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that would not be enough as Zumwalt West held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way to earn the win. Mikey Ludwig paced the Jaguars at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and he also scored a run while Cooper Robinson added a pair of hits and RBIs in the win. Kenton Deverman earned the victory on the mound by going seven innings and striking out nine batters.
In the second game of the series at Zumwalt West, Howell scored their only run in the top of the first before the Jaguars took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to make the score 2-1. Zumwalt West added to the lead with three runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth to claim the 6-1 victory and a piece of the conference title. Robinson once again led the Jaguar attack with two hits as he also drove in two runs while Carson Clark got the win on the mound by throwing a complete game four-hitter and striking out 10 batters as the Jaguars improved to 25-6 on the year.
In another conference race, CBC claimed the Metro Catholic Conference by defeating Chaminade 14-4 Thursday afternoon to finish league play with a record of 6-2. The Cadets’ offense exploded early as CBC scored six runs in the first two innings to take a 6-1 advantage. After the Red Devils scored a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 6-2, CBC plated seven more runs over the next two frames to push the lead to 13-3. Each team scored a run in the fifth inning with the Cadets holding on to claim the win and the conference title. Kyle Byrne had a big day at the plate as hit a pair of hits, including a home run and he drove in five runs to pace the Cadets with Kyan Franklin earning the victory on the mound with five strikeouts.
The Missouri Water Polo state championships will begin this weekend as Parkway Central will enter the tournament as the top seed with Parkway West earning the No. 2 seed. Defending state champions SLUH will hold the No. 3 seed while Lindbergh will enter play as the fourth seed. Opening round games will be played Saturday at various sites across the area.
On the girls’ side. Ladue will open tournament play as the top seed with Marquette holding the No. 2 seed. Parkway North enters bracket play as the No. 3 seed while Oakville will start things off as the No. 4 seed. Play in the girls’ tournament will take place Friday evening.

The spring sports season is starting to see the finish line as conference championships started to be contested this past week as the AAA conference held their boys’ golf championships and track and field championships were contested. Also, one of the biggest soccer matches of the year took place while on the diamond, Eureka continued to play well as they took a pair of big conference wins.

The first of many conference championships took place this past Monday as the AAA conference played their boys’ golf championship at Normandie Golf Club with St. Dominic claiming the team title in dominating fashion as the Crusaders had all five of the players score in the 80’s. St. Dominic finished the day with a score of 328 on a very tough course. Lutheran St. Charles placed second with a score of 341 while Father Tolton out of Columbia earned third place with a score of 347.
In the individual title chase, Andrew Fallis of Tolton earned medalist honors with a six-over par score of 77 while his teammate Garrett McIntosh was the runner-up with an eight-over par score of 79. St. Dominic grabbed the next four slots in the top 10 as Colin Aubuchon placed third with a score of 81 with Mitchell Fite and Kelly Welby scoring 82 that put them in fourth and fifth place. Gaven Ramirez rounded out the Crusaders scoring with an 83 that put him in the sixth position. Lutheran St. Charles earned the next three spots as Owen Tormalas finished seventh with a score of 84 with Richard Calleros and Michael Huesgen each firing rounds of 85 to place eighth and ninth. Andrew Ritcher of St. Mary’s rounded out the top 10 with a score of 86.
The AAA conference also held their track and field championship meet at Borgia this past Wednesday as the Cardinal Ritter girls’ team won the team title while St. Dominic was able to hold off Borgia to claim the boys’ crown.
On the girls’ side, The Lions scored 167 points to earn the team title while St. Dominic placed second with 141 points and Lutheran St. Charles grabbed the third slot with 135 points. Alexis Taylor earned three first place finishes as she won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.37, the long jump title with a leap of 5.39m, and the 100-meter dash with a mark of 12.20. Kyndall Spain added to the Cardinal Ritter point total by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.19 The Crusaders started the meet off on the right foot as Abby Woytus, Piper Wiegmann, Abby Ryan, and Megan Osterholt won the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 10:32.70. Osterholt then claimed the title in the 1600-meter run with a mark of 5:44.88. Grace Dyer added points to the St. Dominic point total as she won the high jump with a leap of 1.47m.
The boys’ team title race came down to the final event as the Crusaders held off Borgia by a single point to claim the team crown. St. Dominic scored 120.5 points while the Knights finished the day with 119.5 points. Cardinal Ritter earned the third slot by scoring 104 points. Donovan McIntosh of St. Mary’s had an outstanding meet as he won three events on the day. He started by winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.79 and then he won the 400-meter dash with a mark of 49.83. McIntosh finished his day by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.03. Ronan Hardwicke from Christian was also a multiple event winner as he claimed the title in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:45.07 and then he earned the crown in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.55. St. Dominic used a pair of strong performances in the field events to propel them to the title. Vincent Pescarino won the pole vault with a leap of 3.35m while Kell Nash took home the javelin title with a throw of 47.09 that gave the Crusaders much needed points.
In one of the biggest soccer matches of the spring, Nerinx Hall scored a pair of goals in the second half to topple previously undefeated St. Joseph’s Academy 2-0 in a huge MWAA conference contest. After a scoreless first 40 minutes, Emma Gianino and Ava Kutz each scored to give the Markers a 2-0 lead. Keira Bartholet and Lauren Seppi were each credited with an assist on the goals while Caroline Ritter mad four saves to help Nerinx Hall improve to 10-1 on the year.
The Eureka baseball team continued their success on the diamond this week as the Wildcats took a pair of games from conference foe Marquette that gave Eureka a two-game lead in the league standings. The Wildcats won the first contest over the Mustangs 7-1 and then turned around to win the back half of the home and home series 1-0 as Cole Edmiston earned the shutout victory by throwing a five hitter and striking out four batters. The Wildcats are now 22-2 on the year and are 7-1 in the Suburban Yellow Conference.

It was a great week on the prep sports scene as conference baseball and girls’ soccer games are in full swing while one of the best golf tournaments in the area took place this past Monday with a bunch of the major players in the area taking part. There was also a good track meet at Brentwood that showcased some of the small school teams in the area.

The Webster Cup year in and year out draws many of the top boy’s teams in the area and this year did not disappoint as Marquette was able to win the title over 24 other teams with a score of 304 in the event held at Crescent Farms in Eureka. Vianney finished second in the event with a mark of 308 while Chaminade placed third with a score of 313.
On the individual side in the Webster Cup, Gavin Lang led the Marquette efforts on the day as he won the individual title with a 1-over par score of 73 while his teammate Shay Zinzuwadia earned a tie for third with a 3-over par mark of 75. Vianney put two players in the top three as well as Cole Wiese earned the runner-up slot with a 2-over par score of 74 while Vince Boccardi was part of a group of four players that tied for third with a 3-over par score of 75.
The annual Sophia Rivera Invite was held at Brentwood this past Monday with University City claiming the top spot in both the boys’ and girls’ meets. The Lions won the boys’ meet with 124 points while Brentwood placed second with 71 points and Bayless earned third place with 59 points. In the girls’ meet, the Lions placed first with 100 points while Collegiate School of Medicine earned second place with 94 points and Bayless grabbed the third slot with 70 points.
Julien Trobaugh paced University City with a pair of titles in the middle-distance events as he won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.55 and the 1600-meter run with a mark of 5:01.14. The Lions also added points in the field events as Miyel Taylor won the High Jump with a jump of 1.62m, Elijah Mayweather winning the Discus with a toss of 32.7m and Tyler Leman won the Shot Put with a throw of 12.52m. Logan Hawkins paced the Brentwood efforts by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.92 while Nickalous Phillips added points by winning the 300-meter hurdle event in a time of 44.39.
The UCity girls won the team race on the shoulders of their three relay teams as their 4×100-meter relay won the event with a mark of 53.30, the 4×200-meter relay team won that event with a mark of 1:52.01, and the Lions 4×400-meter team claimed the top spot with a mark of 4:42.34. Destiny Henry won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:44.69 with Jaidyn Conners winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.40 and Laila Dixon taking home the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.27.
One of the interesting parts of the meet was the performance of the Rosati-Kain girls’ team as they placed fifth with 44 points. The Kougars participated in the meet with only six athletes, but they all performed well. Brooke Elston, who advanced to the MSHSAA Class 3 state meet last year, won the long jump with a leap of 4.74m while placing third in two other events. Madeline Wenger won the High Jump with a leap of 1.42m and then earned a pair of third-place finishes in the 800-meter and the 1600-meter runs.
Conference action on the baseball diamond has been outstanding and the league races are tight throughout the area.
In the Metro Catholic Conference, Vianney and CBC each have one loss in league play while De Smet is 2-2 with St. Louis University High School having a 3-3 mark in conference. Some big matchups coming up over the next few weeks will go along with determining the conference winner.
The GAC South is just as tight as Howell holds the top spot with a record of 5-1 with Fort Zumwalt West right behind with a 4-2 mark. Timberland and Troy are slotted in tied for third place with identical 3-3 records. The conference will come down to the end of the regular season as the Vikings and Jaguars will face off in a pair of games the first week of May.
In coaching news, Howell has named a new coach to lead their softball program after Jenn Beckman-Brown stepped down following the Vikings’ outstanding season that finished in the state final four. Former Howell softball star Lexi Romeril will assume the head coaching position for Howell. Romeril was a standout for the Vikings before she played at the Division II level for Maryville. Romeril also has been successful in the club softball area.

Mother Nature gave us a great week of weather and the spring sports athletes continued to perform in great conditions. The GAC is getting very interesting on the diamond as Howell and Fort Zumwalt West are tied for the top slot in the South Division as both teams are heading to Columbia, Mo., this weekend. In boys’ lacrosse, De Smet earned a big victory over the top team in the area Thursday night to highlight action this week.

The GAC South is loaded once again this year with the top two teams in this week’s HSSC/Scoops with Danny Mac baseball rankings sitting tied for first at 3-1.
Howell earned a split with Troy this week as the Trojans won the opening game of the set 10-3 while the Vikings earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the second contest.
Troy opened the first game with a four-run first inning and was able to add to the lead through the middle innings to earn their first conference win of the season. In the second contest, Howell scored a run in the first and then what turned into the winning run in the fourth frame to hold off the Trojans. Leo Humbert was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored to lead the Viking offense while Brysen Nepute went the distance for the win on the mound with 10 strikeouts to aid Howell in improving to 3-1 in league play.
Fort Zumwalt West also gained a split in conference play this week as they dropped their opening game against Howell North 3-1 and then bounced back the next night to get a 5-3 victory over the Knights.
In the opener, the Knights fell behind 1-0 after the second frame before scoring a run in the third and a pair of runs in the sixth inning to gain their first conference victory. Carter Stover led the Knights efforts at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in while Trey Schneider tossed a complete game gem surrendering two hits and striking out six Jaguars. In the second game, Fort Zumwalt West pushed in a pair of runs in the home half of the first frame to gain an early 2-0 lead only to see North tie the game in the top of the second inning with two runs of their own. The Jaguars regained the lead in the home half of the frame and scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win. Cooper Robinson was 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and two runs batted in to pace the Jaguars while Jeter Rupp earned the win in relief of Collin Greiner to help the Jaguars improve to 3-1 in conference play.
On a side note, longtime Howell North head coach Bob Dunahue announced earlier this week that he will be retiring at the end of the season. Dunahue has guided the Knights to nine district titles, six sectional appearances, and two quarterfinal trips. He also has taken the Knights to a pair of runner-up finishes in the state. He has won 539 games in his career thus far and has seen 228 players move on to play at the college level.
Boys’ Lacrosse is in full swing and De Smet is turning into one of the hottest teams in the area after increasing their current winning streak to five games after handling Chaminade their second loss of the year Thursday night by a score of 18-15. Chaminade is the top team in the area with a record of 7-2. The Spartans are in the second slot with a record of 8-3 and are led in scoring by Graham Labonte who has 27 goals and 10 assists while Kyle Sindelar is second on the squad with 17 goals and 10 assists. Jack Lainauer and Brosnan Mark have been outstanding in splitting up time in goal as they have combined for 98 saves on the season.
In girls’ lacrosse action, Eureka has grabbed the top spot in the rankings with a 4-0 record while John Burroughs is second with a mark of 3-3. The Wildcats are paced by Bailey Boulay who has scored 17 goals and has added 13 assists on the year while Macey Rickles has been outstanding in goal as she has only allowed six goals per game and has made 23 saves thus far this season.
This weekend, some of the area’s top baseball teams are heading to Columbia to take part in the Rock Bridge tournament while on the track the annual All-Catholic Meet will take place at Chaminade. In volleyball action, many of the top squads will head to Fort Zumwalt South for their yearly tournament.

Spring sports are in full swing as action on the baseball fields, soccer pitches, and the track is heating up. Plus, action in boys’ volleyball has already been outstanding. We also saw a group of young men honored by the local amateur baseball association as rising stars on the diamond.

The Greater St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame created the Rising Star Award back in 1995 as it honors local high school baseball players for their accomplishments on and off the field. The Hall of Fame committee selects the finalists via nominations by the head coaches in the area.
This year five outstanding young men were finalists for the award:
Dane Bjorn of Lindbergh has been a constant member of the Flyers starting lineup both at the plate and on the mound. Last season, Bjorn carried a 5-4 record on the bump with an ERA of 1.70; this season, he is currently 1-2 with a 1.47 ERA. He has also hit three doubles and a pair of home runs this season.
Riley Iffrig of Edwardsville helped the Tigers claim the IHSA Class 4A baseball title last season and is a mainstay in the starting lineup again this season. Iffrig last season batted .433 with 10 doubles, three home runs, and drove in 32 runs. This season, he is off to an outstanding start with a .400 batting average as he is leading the Tigers with 19 runs batted in.
Sean Kang of Parkway Central has aided the Colts to a 5-2 record this season and is a contributor every time he steps on the field. Last season, Kang lead the Colts with a .430 batting average as he hit 14 doubles and drove in a team-high 35 RBI. This season, He is batting .421 with eight runs batted in.
Kaden Peer of CBC is picking up where he left off at the end of last season as he leads the Cadets with a .436 batting average while hitting five doubles, a triple, and five home runs already in the early season. Peer led the Cadets last season with five home runs while driving in a team-high 38 runs.

The winner of this year’s Raising Star Award is Brett Norfleet of Francis Howell. Norfleet aided the Vikings in advancing to the MSHSAA state semifinals by leading the team with a .451 batting average and he also had a team-high nine home runs and drove in 54 runs. This season, Norfleet is off to a great start with a .324 batting average, hitting two home runs and driving in 15 runs.
Last weekend, De Smet and Marquette took a trip to Kansas City to showcase boys’ volleyball in matches held at Lee’s Summit West. The reason for the trip was to help build support for the sport as ADs and principals from across the state are voting to move the sport to be recognized as a championship sport. The Spartans were a perfect 3-0 on the trip by winning all three of their matches 3-0. The Mustangs went 2-1 for the weekend with their only loss coming to De Smet. The level of boys’ volleyball is truly something to see in the metro area and the hope is that the vote will come out that boys’ volleyball will become a fully recognized sport.
This weekend, there is a heavy schedule of baseball games this holiday weekend as many local teams are playing in Jefferson City in their annual tournament while other local teams are playing in the Midwest Jesuit Classic being played at SLUH’s Sheridan Stadium and at GCS Ballpark.

The spring sports season is underway and there are some great things happening already all over the area. One of the biggest early-season baseball tournaments has been taking place this week and will wrap up this weekend. Plus, a pair of boys’ volleyball teams will head out west to showcase the sport against some quality teams in Kansas City. There was also some coaching news that broke during the week as well.
Let’s get things going in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.
Let’s start with some coaching news. First, a familiar name in the football coaching circles returns to his roots in South City as Brian Simmons will take over the reins as the Head Football Coach at St. Mary’s. Simmons takes over for Ken Turner, who moved across the river to take over the Belleville West program. Simmons returns to South City after coaching defensive backs at Benedictine College since 2017. He has been a head coach at numerous high schools in the St. Louis area, including Cardinal Ritter, Hazelwood East, and Lutheran North.
Simmons is a graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School and is excited to take over the Dragons football program which has won two consecutive state titles.
“After being rivals from my days at Bishop DuBourg, I never thought I would be offered the head coaching position for the Dragons,” stated Simmons in the St. Mary’s press release. “My faith has called me to work with the talented athletes at St. Mary’s, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
On the court, Incarnate Word head coach Dan Rolfes has been tabbed by USA Basketball to lead the USA Women’s U16 National Team as announced earlier this week. Rolfes is coming off leading the Red Knights to their sixth straight state championship a few weeks back and has guided IWA to 100 consecutive victories. Rolfes previously was a court coach for the 2017 U16 National squad.
“I am incredibly honored and elated to be representing our country as the head coach of the USA Women’s U16 National Team,” Rolfes said in this week’s USA Basketball release. “I never imagined I would get this prestigious opportunity to carry on the success of USA Basketball. I am ready to get to work alongside the best players and coaches in the country.”
Boys’ Volleyball is on the verge of being sanctioned by MSHSAA and a pair of teams from the St. Louis area are going to head west to Kansas City to help promote the sport this weekend. For the first time, two-time state champion De Smet and Marquette will roll out to Lee’s Summit West to take on the Titans and St. Michael’s the Archangel in matches this weekend. All matches this weekend will be played at Lee’s Summit West with all four teams showcasing the sport. The Athletic Directors in the state are voting this month on whether or not to have boys’ volleyball as an MSHSAA-sanctioned sport starting next year. This is going to be a great thing for the young men in not only our area but in the state to showcase the sport. The schedule is the following:

Some of the best teams in the area and the state are playing in the Midwest Classic Baseball Tournament this week at many sites in the St. Charles area. Howell, Lafayette, Howell Central, De Smet, Summit, and Parkway West are taking part in the Classic that Howell head coach Tony Perkins runs every year.
The classic heads into the final day of round-robin play with Howell, Vianney, and De Smet holding 2-0 records after the first two games. The fourth pool finished play late Thursday night with Blue Springs South holding an advantage heading into the final game of the night.
They will begin bracket play Friday afternoon with the championship game taking place Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The second weekend of the Missouri State High School Activities Association Show-Me Showdown got underway Thursday with the Class four boys’ and girls’ teams taking center stage while the rest of the semifinals will take place Friday and Saturday. There is plenty of local representation in the semis this year in all three classes.
The Class 4 boys’ semifinals opened up Thursday afternoon as Park Hills Central advanced to the title game Friday with an 82-57 win over Lafayette out of St. Joseph. The Rebels exploded in the first quarter as they outscored Lafayette 29-12 in the period and added to the lead in the second quarter as they took a 47-23 lead at the break. Central shot 56 percent in the half to gain the lead and continued the shooting pace in the second half as they were 15-of-23 from the field to finish the game shooting 60 percent en route to the victory. The Rebels put three players in double figures as Jobe Bryant led the way with 20 points while Mason Williams had 16 points with Caden Casey chilling in with 15 markers as Central will now vie for their first-ever state basketball championship Friday at 2 p.m.
While in the other Class 4 semi, Vashon needed a late push to defeat Father Tolton 49-45 to move on to the state final. The Wolverines raced out to a 20-10 lead after the first period only to see Tolton cut the advantage to 30-27 at the break. The second half went back and forth until the Wolverines took control of the final period to get the win. Kennard Davis led the way for Vashon with 20 points while Cameron Stovall added 11 markers in the win.
Vashon and Park Hills Central will play for the Class 4 title at 2 p.m. Friday inside Great Southern Bank Arena.
In the Class 4 girls’ semifinals, Vashon defeated Southern Boone 55-40 to move on to the title game against Benton, who knocked off Park Hills Central 55-48 In overtime. The Wolverines took an 11-8 lead after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 26-18 at the break. Vashon outscored Southern Boone 19-13 in the third stanza to extend the lead to 45-32 and hung on in the fourth quarter to garner the win. Jayla Bush led Vashon in double digits with 16 points while Chantrel Clayton added 15 points.
Vashon will take on Benton in the Class 4 title game Friday at 4 p.m. at the Great Southern Bank Arena.
The Class 5 boys’ will get underway Friday afternoon with Cardinal Ritter making their fourth straight appearance in the semifinals as the Lions will take on Pembroke Hill at 2 p.m. inside the Hammons Student Center. Head Coach Ryan Johnson brings Ritter back to Springfield after placing third last year in Class 5. Ritter won the Class 5 title two years ago while winning the Class 3 championship in the 2020 COVID shorten championships. The Lions are currently 24-4 on the year and are led by Clayton Jackson, scoring 14 points a game. Nashawn Davis is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game and is grabbing seven boards per game.
In the other Class 5 boys’ semifinal, Ladue returns to the state final four for the first time since 2019 after winning a pair of nail-biters in the district final and the state quarterfinals. They will face Jefferson City Friday at 4 p.m. at Hammons Student Center. This is the second time that the Rams have advanced to the semifinals, and they are by Jack Steinbach, scoring 14 points per game. Jaylen Swinney is second on the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game and he also leads the Rams by grabbing six boards per game. The Class 5 title game will be Saturday at 6 p.m. inside the Great Southern Bank Arena.
In Class 5 girls’ action, Lutheran St. Charles will take on defending Class 5 state champion West Plains Friday at 8 p.m. at Hammons. The Cougars are making their fourth appearance in the state semifinals and are looking to win their second state championship with the first coming in 2013. Jordan Speiser paces the Cougars’ offense with 16.5 points per game while Megan Aulbert is adding 13 markers per game and is grabbing 8.5 boards per game.
The Lutheran St. Charles and West Plains matchup winner will take on either Cape Notre Dame or Carl Junction Saturday at 8 p.m. inside Great Southern Bank Arena.
Class 6 action will start Friday at Great Southern Bank Arena with Troy making their first appearance in the state semifinals since 2011 taking on Kickapoo out of Springfield. The Trojans advanced to the semis with a 74-62 victory over Chaminade in the quarterfinals and looking for their first state championship after finishing second on two occasions. The Trojans are led by Jack Fessenden who is averaging 15.4 points per game while Andrew Moore is adding 13 markers per contest. Keegan Linebaugh leads Troy in rebounding with seven caroms per contest while Charlie Nett runs the point and is handing out 3.5 assists per game.
The winner of the Troy and Kickapoo game will face either Jackson or Staley at 2 p.m. Saturday at Great Southern Bank Arena.
The girls of Class 6 take the court at Great Southern Bank Arena Friday evening as Eureka opens semifinal action against Rock Bridge with the tip set for 6 p.m. The Wildcats are making their fourth appearance in the final four and are looking to claim their second state title after winning the crown in 2000. Eureka joins the semifinals after defeating Jackson 54-39 in the quarterfinals and will be led by Bailey Boulay who is averaging 12.3 points per game. Natalie Harty is second on the squad in scoring with an average of 10.8 points per contest while Maison Smith is adding 9.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.
In the other semifinal, Incarnate Word will take on Raytown and will look to extend a few streaks this weekend. The Red Knights enter the semifinals on a 98-game winning streak and have won the last five state titles. IWA moved on to the semifinals by defeating Troy 68-26 and is led by Natalie Potts who is averaging 18.8 points per game and has a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest. Brooke Coffey is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.6 points per game and five boards per contest. Peyton Hill runs the Red Knight offense as she has 3.5 assists per game.
The winners of the two semifinals will face off Saturday at 4 p.m. inside the Great Southern Bank Arena.

Championship season continues this weekend as the small school classes travel to Springfield, Mo., for the first weekend of the MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown while a pair of metro-east teams head to Champaign, Ill. with dreams of bringing home the top trophy in the state. The MSHSAA quarterfinal round will also take place this weekend with many big games on the slate as teams will look to advance to Springfield next weekend.

The Illinois High School Association boys’ state semifinals started Thursday evening with some local flavor as Gibault Catholic out of Waterloo advanced to the Class 1A championship game with a convincing 70-46 victory over Cornerstone Christian at State Farm Arena in Champaign. This is the third appearance in the state final four for the Hawks as they attempt to win their first basketball state title. Gibault grabbed the lead late in the first quarter, finishing the period with a 9-2 run that put them on top 17-8. The Hawks took a 29-19 advantage into the halftime locker room before their offense exploded in the third stanza as they outscored Cornerstone 23-12, giving Gibault a 52-31 lead. They never looked back as they punched their ticket to the title game. Kaden Augustine led a trio of Hawks in double figures with a game-high 20 points, Kameron Hanvy scored 16 points, and Gavin Kesler added 14 markers in the win. Gibault will face off against Scales Mound Saturday at 11 a.m.
East St. Louis will open play in the IHSA Class 3A semifinals Friday morning as the Flyers will take on Metamora at 11:45 a.m. East St. Louis needed to work overtime to defeat Sacred Heart-Griffin Tuesday night as the Flyers advanced with a 59-56 double-overtime win over the Blazers. Sacred Heart took a 23-19 lead to the break as the Flyers chipped away at the lead and were able to even the game 45-45 at the end of regulation. After both teams scored six points apiece in the first extra session, they were able to finally break free by outscoring Sacred Heart 8-5 in the second overtime to gain the win. Macaleab Rich led the Flyers with a double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while D’Necco Rucker added 11 points for the Flyers who are looking for their second state basketball title in five years as they won the crown in 2019.
Principia and Lutheran North will represent the area at the MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown this weekend at Great Southern Bank Arena and Hammons Student Center as the Panthers will take on Plattsburg in the Class 2 semifinals Friday at 2 p.m. while the Crusaders will play Thayer in the Class 3 semifinals at noon Friday.
Principia advanced to the semifinals by defeating Cooter 49-46 in overtime this past Friday and will enter the weekend with a 24-6 record. The Panthers are led by senior Stephen Okoro who is averaging 13 points per game and grabbing 13 rebounds per contest. Jaylen Edwards is the leading scorer for Principia with an average of 16.1 points per game while freshman Ben Okoro has dished out 110 assists on the year. The Panthers are looking to win their first state basketball title in school history.
Lutheran North will enter the state semifinals with a record of 19-10 after they defeated Cole Camp in the quarterfinals by a score of 41-28. Bryce Spiller paces the Crusaders’ offense with a scoring average of 19 points a game and he has also dished out 53 assists. Davell Long is second on the team in scoring with a 10.6-points-per-game average while grabbing five rebounds per contest while AJ Newton has grabbed seven rebounds per game to lead Lutheran North in that category. The Crusaders have won a pair of state titles with the last one being back in 2005.
The quarterfinals in Classes Four through Six will take place this weekend as the boys will take the floor Friday night while the girls will play Saturday afternoon.
In Class 4 boys’ action, MICDS will take on Park Hills Central Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Jefferson College while Vashon will meet up with Lutheran St. Charles Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Lindenwood.
The Class 4 girls will see Lift for Life taking on Park Hills Central Saturday at noon at Jefferson College while Vashon will take on Moberly Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lindenwood.
Cardinal Ritter will kick off Class 5 boys action Friday evening as they will play Sikeston at Jefferson College starting at 6:15 p.m. In another Class 5 quarterfinal, Ladue will meet up with Westminster Friday at Lindenwood starting at 5:45 p.m.
The Class 5 girls will play Saturday with John Burroughs taking on Cape Notre Dame at Jefferson College starting at 1:45 p.m. while upstart Whitfield will play Lutheran St. Charles Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at Lindenwood.
The Class 6 boys will see Eureka playing Jackson Friday at Jefferson College starting at 8 p.m. while Chaminade Troy will hook up Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Lindenwood.
Incarnate Word will lead the Class 6 field as they will take on Troy Saturday at Lindenwood starting at 7:30 p.m. while Eureka will travel to Jefferson College to take on Jackson Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The three girls’ teams on the Illinois side of the river are competing for state titles while many boys’ teams on both sides have kept their title aspirations alive heading into the sectionals this weekend. The playoffs for the big schools are underway as the boys head into the district semifinal action Friday night while the girls will have most of their district finals Saturday afternoon.

The Illinois High School Association girls’ basketball final four started at CERCU Arena in Normal, Ill. Thursday as Okawville moved on to the Class 1A title game by upsetting the top-ranked team in the state, Galena 49-31. The Rockets trailed Galena 10-9 after the first quarter before outscoring Galena 26-12 over the next two periods to take a 35-22 advantage into the final stanza. The Rockets did not slow down in the fourth as they pulled away to earn the victory and advance to the title contest. The Rockets were paced by Alayna Kraus who scored 23 points while Briley Rhodes added 10 markers with Megan Rennegarbe grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to propel Okawville to the championship game Saturday at 11 a.m. against Christopher.
In the IHSA girls’ Class 2A semifinals, Breese Mater Dei advanced to the championship game Saturday afternoon with a 61-54 victory over Quincy Notre Dame. The Knights took a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 29-23 at the break. The Knights continued to pull away in the third quarter by outscoring Notre Dame 12-6 to push the lead to 41-29 and were able to hold off a furious comeback by Notre Dame in the final stanza to advance to the title game. Alyssa Koerkenmeier led the Knights with 21 points with Amelia Beer adding 19 markers to push Mater Dei into the title contest Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against Byron.
In the Class 4A semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m., O’Fallon makes their first appearance in the state final four as the Panthers will take on Arlington Heights. The Panthers advanced to the state semifinals with a 65-49 victory over Bolingbrook. The Panthers took an early 9-5 lead in the Super-Sectional over Bolingbrook and never looked back as O’Fallon improved to 32-4 on the year. Jailah Pelly led the Panthers’ offense with 24 points while Shannon Dowell chipped in with 19 markers in the win.
In boys’ sectional action in the metro area, Principia continues to impress after winning their Class 2 sectional contest with a 71-60 victory over Advance. The Panthers took an early 18-14 lead after the first quarter and stretched it out to a 30-22 advantage at the break. Advance cut the deficit to 44-39 after three quarters, but the Panthers pulled away in the final period to seal the victory. Jaylen Edwards led the scorers for Principia with 22 points while Stephan Okoro put in 19 points and grabbed 22 boards to push the Panthers to the state Quarterfinals against Cooter Friday at 6 p.m. at the Farmington Civic Center.
In the Class 3 boys’ sectional at Hannibal, upstart Lutheran North moved on to the state quarterfinals with a 56-48 win over South Shelby. Jameer Cretter led the way for the Crusaders with 14 points while Davell Long added 12 points and five rebounds to help Lutheran North improve to 18-10 on the season. The Crusaders will travel to Moberly Friday night at 8 p.m. to take on Cole Camp at Moberly Area Community College.
We head back over to Illinois on the boy’s side as O’Fallon continues their impressive season as the Panthers moved on to the Class 4A Super-Sectional with a 64-35 victory over Quincy. The Panthers opened up a 15-7 lead after one-quarter of play and left no doubt the rest of the way as they limited Quincy to only 28 points over the final three periods. Rini Harris paced the O’Fallon attack with 19 points while Isaiah Camper chipped in with 16 markers to aid the Panthers in advancing to Super-Sectional Friday against Moline at 7 p.m. at Moline High School.
In the IHSA Class 3A Sectional Finals, East St. Louis and Triad will travel to Centralia Friday evening to play each other for the right to advance to the Super-Sectional Monday evening. The Flyers defeated Centralia 53-39 this past Tuesday as Macaleab Rich led the East St. Louis offense with 19 points while Antwan Robinson added another 11 points to help the Flyers improve to 23-8.
Triad moved to 28-6 on the year after defeating Mount Vernon 51-34 Wednesday evening to set up the all-local Sectional final. Drew Winslow laced the Knight’s 20 points while McGrady Noyes grabbed seven rebounds in the victory.
There are plenty of district semifinals that will be taking place this weekend with the Class 5 and 6 boys’ semifinals taking place Friday evening with the Class 5 and 6 girls’ semifinals happening Saturday. Class 4 will see their district finals will take place Friday evening with the girls playing their finals Saturday.
The Mid-States Club Hockey playoffs will wrap up Friday evening as Lafayette and Fort Zumwalt West will vie for the Wickenheiser Cup starting at 5:30 p.m. while SLUH and De Smet will tangle for the Challenge Cup title at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Centene Ice Center.

The prep sports scene heated up this week as Incarnate Word faced its toughest opponent of the year to extend its winning streak. On the mat, the Class 1 and Class 2 boys with the class 1 girls’ took the mats at Mizzou Arena for the 2023 State Championships. With this all going on, the Mid-States Hockey Club Association played their next rounds of the playoffs with a major upset Thursday night in the Challenge Cup.

On the court in girls’ action, the top two teams in the area hit the court as Incarnate Word needed to battle for a 53-43 win over John Burroughs in a battle of two of the top two teams in the state. The Red Knights, who are the top team in the latest MBCA Class 6 poll are on a 94-game winning streak but pushed for the first time this year as the Bombers, who are the NO.2 team in the coaches’ poll gave IWA all they that wanted. Natalie Potts paced the Red Knights with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win while Brooke Coffey added 13 markers and eight boards in the win. Allie Turner led the Bombers with 19 points in the loss as the Bombers fell to 23-3 on the year with two of those losses coming to IWA.
On the mat in the MSHSAA Class 1 Wrestling Finals at Mizzou Arena, Brentwood grabbed a piece of 31st place with 11 points to lead the locals while Lift For Life and Roosevelt earned 39th place with 4 points in the meet.
In Class 2, St. Clair finished eighth in the championship with 70.5 points St. Charles earned a piece of 21st place with 27.5 points. Ryan Meek paced the Bulldogs with a championship in the 120 lb. class with a 15-0 tech fall in the title match. Brock Woodcock added to the St. Clair point total with a major decision victory in the 157 lb. weight class.
In the girls’ Class 1 wrestling championship, Festus was the top local squad with a 14th-place finish as the Tigers earned 46 points in the meet. North Point was the next local team in the meet with a 21st-place finish with 35 points. Cassidy Benwell wrapped up a perfect year in the 120 lb. class with a major decision to finish the season with a 27-0 record.
Things are heating up in the Mid-States Hockey Club playoffs as the Challenge Cup is down to the final four after action Thursday night with one of the mainstays in the playoffs getting knocked out of the tournament.
The No. 3 seed De Smet moved on in the losers’ bracket with a 4-2 victory over Marquette to advance to the next round. Dillen Grupe opens the scoring for the Spartans in the first period with a goal to give Ce Smet a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs evened the count at 1-1 as Thomas Vodnansky scored on a power play late in the period to pull Marquette even. De Smet exploded in the second period as Cole Heffington scored two goals while Nicholas Salthouse added a short-handed goal to make the score 4-1. Marquette added a goal from Colin Farrell early in the third period to cut the Spartans’ lead to 4-2, but that is as close as Marquette would get as De Smet used their outstanding defense to keep the Mustangs at bay.
On the other side of the losers’ bracket, one of the biggest upsets in the Challenge Cup took place as No. 6 seed Chaminade knocked out the top seed in the playoffs CBC 2-1. The Cadets grabbed an early lead as Carter Clemons scored on a power play at the 5:45 mark of the first period to give CBC an early 1-0 lead. Henry Kittner evened the score at 1-1 as he scored on an even-strength goal at the 13:03 mark of the period to tie the contest. Eric Ewing Jr. gave the Red Devils the lead for good at the 4:13 mark of the second period with an even-strength goal that made the score 2-1. Chaminade then leaned on goaltender Julius Kolari to earn the upset win as he finished the night with 25 saves to earn the win.
Action in the Challenge Cup continues Friday evening at Centene Ice Center as De Smet will take on Chaminade at 8:45 p.m. while in the winner’s bracket, No. 2 seed Kirkwood will play No. 4 seed SLUH. In the loser’s bracket, De Smet will play Chaminade at 7:30 p.m.
In the Wickenheiser Cup playoffs, semifinal action will start Friday evening at Centene as No.1 seed Oakville will open their two-game series against No. 5 seed Lafayette at 7 p.m. while No.2 seed MICDS will take on No.3 seed Fort Zumwalt West at 9:10 p.m. to open their two-game series.
In a busy weekend on the prep sports scene, state wrestling will take center stage.
Hillsboro and Whitfield lead the Class 3 squads as the Warriors will look to repeat as Class 3 champions and will attempt to win their 12th state title. The Hawks will have depth on their side as they qualified all 11 wrestlers to the championship meet after districts last weekend. Griffin Ray will lead the charge for Hillsboro as he will compete in the 165 lb. class with a record of 40-3 and he will be joined by Jackson Tucker who will wrestle in the 132 lb. class with an outstanding record of 39-1. Whitfield has 10 wrestlers vying for titles in the meet as they will be led by Porter Matecki who will wrestle in the 126 lb. class with a record of 37-2. Jackson Bassett will also look to help the Warriors as he will lead things off in the 106 lb. division with a record of 37-5.
The Class 4 championship meet will be up for grabs as Seckman will look to improve on their runner-up finish from a year ago while Howell Central looks to compete for a spot on the podium this weekend. The Jaguars have nine wrestlers heading to Columbia and will be led by Xander Harris in the 113 lb. class with a record of 21-8 while John Bamvakais will compete in the 157 lb. class with a record of 41-7. All-State football player Cole Ruble will also be counted on in the Seckman lineup as he will wrestle in the 190 lb. division with a record of 34-7. The Spartans will also send nine wrestlers to the state meet as Aiden Hernandez will lead the way for Howell Central in the 165 lb. class with a record of 25-1. Thomas Stuhlman will also be a key to Howell Central’s success as he will wrestle in the 157 lb. class with a mark of 13-2.
On the girls’ side on the mats, It is a loaded field in Class 2 as Howell Central putting 10 wrestlers through while Holt is sending eight wrestlers to the meet while Washington will have seven ladies participating this weekend. The Blue Jays won their district and will count on Kendra Bliss to continue her outstanding season in the 125 lb. class as she enters the weekend with a 45-3 record. Julia Donnelly will also be someone to watch for Washington as she will be in the 110 lb. class with a record of 30-3. Howell Central also won their district and will have Kailey Benson leading the charge in the 115 lb. class with a record of 39-4. Dana Thee Sanchez will add depth to the Howell Central lineup as she will be in the lb. cla1ss with a mark of 28-8. Holt was the runner-up in the district and has Marissa Sanabria pacing them as she will look to remain undefeated in the 130 lb. class as she takes a 43-0 record into the meet. Lily Steigerwald will lead things off for Holt as she is in the 120 lb. class and has a mark of 27-4 on the year.

It was a big day at the St. Peters Rec Plex as the chase for the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 Swimming and Diving title started with a bang as a local swimmer broke a pair of state records in the prelims. The John Burroughs girls’ basketball team continued to impress with a big victory this past week and the Mid-States Club Hockey playoffs are heating up.

The prelims for the Class 2 swimming and diving championships took place Thursday as Haiden Schoessel from Eureka thrilled the crowd by setting a pair of new state Class 2 records to put the Wildcats in position for the team title. Schoessel opened her meet by setting a new state mark in the 50-yard Free with a time of 23.14 and then backed that up with a new Class 2 state mark in the 100-yard Free with a time of 50.35. She will be the top seed in the finals that are taking place Friday. Schoessel also helped Eureka advance to the final heat in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard free relay.

Kylee Sullivan from Parkway South also had an outstanding opening day of the meet as she topped the charts in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:04.05 and in the 100-yard Fly with a mark of 55.23. Sullivan also was part of the 200-yard medley relay that finished the prelims in the top spot with a time of 1:46.25 while also joining the Patriots 400-yard free relay to a third-place finish in the prelims with a time of 3:34.46.
Ava Wolf from the top local finisher in the 200-yard free with a second-place finish in a time of 1:53.24 with Allie Moloney from Cor Jesu earning the third spot in the prelims with a time of 1:53.51. Lexi Cook from Parkway South earned third in the prelims in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:03.33.
The MICDS 200-yard free relay team will take the top spot heading into the finals with a time of 1:38.71 with Kirkwood joining them in the final heat in the fourth spot with a mark of 1:39.97. In the 100-yard Back, Isabelle Ackley from Timberland set another new state Class 2 record with a time of 54.68 to move into the final heat with Cook from Parkway South coming in second with a mark of 55.96.
Caroline Foltz from Cor Jesu led the qualifiers in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:02.86 while Alayna Henage from Parkway South placed second in the prelims with 1:04.36. In the 400-yard free relay, St. Joseph’s Academy will be the top team in the final with a time of 3:33.49 as seven of the top eight teams in the final will be from the St. Louis metro area.
In the Class 2 diving championships, Maggie Arceneaux of Lafayette earned a fourth-place finish in the state with a score of 363.35 while her teammate Lucia Tenny placed on the podium with a sixth-place finish with a score of 347.00 points.
The Class 2 finals will begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning while the Class 1 prelims will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Class 1 diving championship will take place Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Class 1 finals starting at 3 p.m.
On the hardwood, the John Burroughs girls’ basketball team picked up a huge non-conference victory Tuesday evening with a 61-59 win over Lutheran St. Charles. The Bombers raced out to a 21-11 advantage after the first quarter of play and took a 35-25 advantage into the halftime locker room. The Cougars battled back in the third period by outscoring the Bombers 15-8 to cut the John Burroughs lead to 43-40. The Bombers were able to hang on in the fourth quarter with some key free throws down the stretch to gain the victory and improve to 23-2 on the year. Allie Turner paced the Bombers’ attack with 20 points while Monet Witherspoon added 15 markers in the win. Jordan Speiser led the Cougars with 21 points and nine rebounds as Lutheran St. Charles fell to 20-5 on the year.
Action is heating up on the ice as the Mid-States Club Hockey playoffs continued this week as the Challenge Cup is down to their final six teams left in the playoffs while the Wickenheiser Cup has five teams remaining.
In the Challenge Cup, a battle between two of the top teams in the playoffs started things off this week as St. Louis University High School knocked off the top seed CBC 6-3 to advance to the winner’s bracket final while No. 2 seed Kirkwood defeated No. 3 seed De Smet 6-2 to set up their contest against the Jr. Bills next Friday evening at Centene Ice Center. In the loser’s bracket, Marquette defeated Lindbergh 5-2 and will take on De Smet while Chaminade beat Parkway South 3-2 to move on and will take on CBC in the next round next week.
In the Wickenheiser Cup playoffs, top seed Oakville advanced to the semifinals by defeating John Burroughs 5-3 and 5-2 in the first round. After the Lancers knocked off Clayton in the first round, the Tigers will face Lafayette in the two-game semifinals. Lafayette won the opening game of the two-game series against the Greyhounds 4-1 but fell to Clayton in the second game of the series 4-2, but advanced to the semifinals by outscoring the Greyhounds 6-5 in the series. No. 2 seed MICDS moved on to the semifinals by defeating Holt 3-1 and 6-2 and will take on either Fort Zumwalt West or Fort Zumwalt South in the next round. The Jaguars won the series’ opening game over the Bulldogs 4-1 and will play their second game Monday evening at 9:30 p.m. at Centene Ice Center.
This weekend is going to be busy on the prep scene as the De Smet boys’ basketball team will look to take the outright MCC title as they take on Chaminade Friday at 6:30 p.m. at De Smet.
The state boys’ wrestling districts will take place this weekend as New Madrid Central will host the local Class 1 district meet while Ste. Genevieve and Mexico will host the local squads in Class 2. In Class 3, Farmington and Fort Zumwalt South will host district action while Jackson and Fort Zumwalt West will welcome the local teams in Class 4.

A pair of area coaches earned national honors from the National Federation of High Schools to highlight this past week of high school sports while the Mid-States Hockey Club started second-round action in their playoffs after a few key games on Monday. Plus, the annual Queen of Hearts tournament is underway with three of the top teams in the area advancing to the semifinals Friday evening.

Earlier this week, two of our outstanding coaches earned NFHS Section Coach of the Year. Our section includes the states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Jim Layne from Fort Zumwalt South earned the Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year while Leslie Kehr from John Burroughs garnered the Boys’ Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year.

Layne led the Bulldogs to state championships in Class 3 in 2021 and 2022 and has always been in the mix for state titles since he took over the program. Kehr has been a constant on the deck for the Bombers for many years and helped many John Burroughs swimmers and divers move on to the college ranks.
In more coaching news, Ryan Nesbitt announced that he will be leaving Troy to take over the Jackson football program. Nesbitt has been at the helm for the Trojans since 2014 and is the program’s all-time winning coach in earning 43 victories and led Troy to the Class 6 semifinals in 2021. Nesbitt takes over for Brent Eckley, who is leaving Jackson to take over the Har-Ber football program in Springdale, Ark.
The first round of the Queen of Hearts tournament started at Villa Duchesne Wednesday evening with John Burroughs leading the teams into the semifinals that will take place Friday evening.
The Bombers used their defense to race out to a 30-10 lead at the half and cruised to a 63-16 victory over Parkway Central in an opening-round contest. Celia Thayer paced the Bombers’ attack with 15 points while Alice Crowley added 11 markers in the win to help John Burroughs improve to 20-2 on the year.
St. Dominic needed three overtimes in the second opening-round game to defeat Lutheran North 52-47. Maren Hunt led the Crusaders with 18 points with Madison Lynch adding 12 points to help St. Dominic advance to the semifinals. Hunt also grabbed 16 rebounds in the winning effort.
Pattonville and Lift for Life won the final two quarterfinal contests to set up the second semifinal that will take place Friday at 8:30 p.m.
The second round of the Mid-States Club Hockey Association playoffs is underway as CBC and St. Louis University High School won their opening games to set up another possible instant classic in the winner’s bracket semifinal.
The Cadets entered the bracket play portion of the Challenge Cup as the top seed and used an outstanding second period to defeat Lindbergh 7-0 to move into the semifinals. CBC broke out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period as Walker Landy scored at the 4:54 mark to give the Cadets the lead. CBC’s offense exploded in the second period as Nicolas Puricelli, Carter Clemons, Luke Broadhead, and Landy all scored to push the advantage to 5-0. The Cadets added a pair of goals in the final stanza as Puricelli scored his second goal of the night with Brenden Korte adding an insurance goal to get the win.
The No. 4 seeded Jr. Bills used their defense early on to come away with a 6-1 win over Marquette in the second quarterfinal match of the tournament. Gavin Simon opened the scoring for the Jr. Bills late in the first period with an even-strength goal to give SLUH a 1-0 lead at the break. Logan Petlansky and Patrick Vogl each scored in the second period to put SLUH on top 3-0. The Jr. Bills added three more goals in the final stanza to set up the semifinal contest against CBC.
The final two games in the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup will take place Monday night at Queeny Park as No.2 seed Kirkwood will play No. 7 seed Parkway South at 6:30 p.m. while No. 3 seed De Smet will take on No. 6 seed Chaminade at 8:45 p.m.
There has been one game in the Wickenheiser Cup playoffs as top-seed Oakville opened their two games series with John Burroughs with a 5-3 victory Thursday evening. The Tigers scored a pair of goals in the latter stages of the first period with Joseph Daniels and Mason Andrew each finding the back of the net to give Oakville a 2-0 advantage. Teagan Lee extended the Oakville advantage to 3-0 just 79 seconds into the second period, but the Bombers cut into the deficit as Jacob Brown scored at the 9:54 mark to make the score 3-1. Grant Bader pushed the Oakville lead to 4-1 with a goal at the 12:55 mark to push the advantage to 4-1 at the end of the second period. Burroughs got to within a goal in the first five minutes of the third period as Nickolas Martin and Caden Asbach each found the net to get the Bombers to within a goal at 4-3. Andrew put the game out of reach in the waning stages of the contest with an empty net goal to give Oakville the win.
The rest of the Wickenheiser Cup first-round games will take place early next week as No. 2 MICDS will take on No. 7 seed Holt Monday with No. 3 seed Fort Zumwalt West playing No. 6 seed Fort Zumwalt South Tuesday and No. 4 seed Clayton taking on No. 5 seed Lafayette Monday.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association girls’ wrestling districts will take place this weekend as St. Clair and North Point will host two of the Class 1 district tournaments while Northwest and Holt will host a pair of the Class 2 district tournaments.
There are also a ton of big-time basketball matchups this weekend as teams are looking to clinch conference titles and improve their records as district seeding meetings are slated for next week.

The road to the Missouri State High School Activities Association State Swimming and Diving Championships continued this week as many of the top teams competed in conference championships. Plus, the Mid-States Club Hockey Association starts its playoffs this weekend, and the semifinals and finals of the Webster Groves girls’ tournament will take place this weekend.

In the pool, two-time defending state champion Kylee Sullivan paced the Parkway South girls’ swimming and diving team to a third-place finish in the Suburban Yellow Conference championship this past week as the Patriots will look to defend their Class 2 state championship from a year ago. Kirkwood, who finished fourth in last year’s state meet, won the conference title with 429 points, Lafayette earned the second spot with 355 points, and the Patriots finished third with 346 points. Sullivan, one of the state’s top swimmers, won the 200-meter IM in a time of 2:03.46 and then won the 100-meter Fly with a mark of 54.94. She also aided a pair of Patriot relay teams to victory in the meet.
In the GAC South-Central swimming and diving championships, Timberland grabbed the top spot with 453 points while Howell earned the second spot with 353 points, and Fort Zumwalt West finished third with 332 points. Brooke Gustafson led the Timberland efforts by winning the 200-meter IM in a time of 2:15.73 while Isabelle Ackley won the 100-meter fly with a mark of 58.18. Ackley also won the 100-meter Back in a time of 55.04 to pace the Wolves.
The Webster Groves Winter Classic kicked off earlier this week as the top four seeds moved on to the semifinals that will be held Friday evening.
In the first quarterfinal, Vashon used an outstanding defensive effort to defeat Cor Jesu 50-32. The Wolverines did not allow Cor Jesu to score in double digits in any quarter to secure the win.
In the second quarterfinal, Rock Bridge raced out to an early lead and cruised to a 59-24 victory over Webster Groves. The Bruins took an early 16-5 lead after one-quarter of play and extended the lead to 38-13 at the half en route to the win.
Lift for Life exploded for 22 points in the final quarter to overcome a four-point deficit to defeat St. Joseph’s 56-51. The Angels held a 38-34 advantage after three quarters of play before Lift for Life outscored St. Joseph 22-13 in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
In the final quarterfinal, Incarnate Word improved to 18-0 on the season with a 74-24 win over Gateway Legacy to move on to the semifinals. Brooke Coffey led the way for the Red Knights with 29 points while Natalie Potts added 10 markers in the win.
In the semifinals Friday evening, Vashon will take on Rock Bridge at 7 p.m. while IWA will play Lift for Life at 8:30 p.m. with the winners moving on to the championship game Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The Mid-State Club Hockey Association opened up post-season tournament play Thursday evening and will have a full slate of games over the weekend.
In the Challenge Cup, CBC is the top seed and will open up round-robin play Saturday against No. 4 seed St. Louis University High School at 8:30 p.m. at the Affton Ice Rink. The Cadets and Jr. Bills are once again on a collision course for the Cup after SLUH won the title last year. The Cadets are looking for their 18th championship this year. The Jr. Bills opened round-robin action Thursday evening with a 3-1 win over No. 9 seed Parkway South. The No. 2 seed in the Challenge Cup, Kirkwood starts their playoff action Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. against No.11 seed Lindbergh at Queeny Park. Defending Cup runners-up De Smet holds the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 10 seed Seckman Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Centene Ice Arena.
There is a difference in the Challenge Cup playoffs this year as the 12 teams in the four three-team pools with the top four teams from each division moving on to an eight-team double-elimination tournament.
Parkway West heads into the Wickenheiser Cup playoffs as the top seed and they will open round-robin action against Webster Groves Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. at the Maryville Ice Center. Summit is the No. 2 seed, and they will take on Clayton at Affton in a 10:10 p.m. start Saturday evening while No. 3 seed Oakville opens play against Fort Zumwalt West Friday night at 9:30 p.m. at the South County rink. MICDS is the No. 4 season after a record-setting season as they opened up play with a 4-4 tie against Ladue Thursday night. The Rams will take on Fox Saturday evening at Meramec starting at 9 p.m. in their second round-robin game.

Mother Nature threw the prep sports scene a mini curveball this past week, but that did not stop the action as the Circle 7 Tournament played their first two rounds to set up the finals Friday evening while one of two area undefeated teams on the girls’ side suffered their first loss of the season.
Time to get caught up on all the action in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.
The Circle 7 Tournament at Parkway West played their semifinals Thursday evening. After those games, a collision between two top teams in the metro area will occur in the championship contest Friday at 8:30 p.m.
In one of the semifinals, De Smet needed to rally in the final stanza to earn a 47-44 victory over the host Longhorns. The game was tight throughout as Parkway West held a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Spartans took a 25-24 advantage into the halftime locker room. The Longhorns regained the lead in the third quarter 37-35 before De Smet outscored the Longhorns 12-7 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory. Owen and Justin Duff paced the Spartans with 14 points each while Riley Massey added 12 markers in the win to help De Smet improve to 12-4 on the year. Tyler King led the Longhorn attack with 14 points.

In the second semifinal, Kirkwood raced out to an early lead and cruised to a 55-43 win over Lafayette to remain undefeated at 16-0 on the year. Ayden Trawick and Christian Hughes paced the Pioneers’ attack with 14 points each while Trawick grabbed eight rebounds to help Kirkwood remain undefeated on the year.
Kirkwood and De Smet will meet up in the championship game Friday at 8:30 p.m. while Parkway West and Lafayette will meet up in the third-place contest at 7 p.m.
In another heavyweight battle earlier this week, Triad traveled to Ladue and took home a 50-46 victory over the Rams Tuesday night. Triad grabbed an early 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before the teams played on even terms in the second quarter as the Knights held a 25-21 advantage at the break. Triad extended the lead to 34-29 after three-quarters of play and held off a Ladue rally in the final quarter to earn the win and improve to 19-5 on the year. Tyler Thompson and Drew Winslow each scored 13 points to lead the Knights offense while Thompson grabbed six rebounds in the victory. Jack Steinbach tossed in 20 points to pace the Rams’ attack while Jaylen Swinney grabbed five boards as Ladue fell to 14-4 on the year.
On the girls’ side of hoops action, O’Fallon handed Alton their first loss of the year Thursday evening 51-38 draw even with the Red Birds at the top of the Southwestern Conference on the Illinois side. Alton took an early 10-6 lead over the Panthers at the end of the first quarter only to see O’Fallon draw even with them at 22-22 at the half. The Panthers’ offense exploded in the second half by outscoring the Red Birds 29-16 in the final 16 minutes to improve to 23-4 on the year. Shannon Dowell led the way for the Panthers with 12 points while Jailah Pelly added 10 markers in the win. Both squads are now tied for the top of the SWC with identical 8-1 records as they head to the final few weeks of the season.
It will be a busy weekend on the courts and the wrestling mats as many tournaments will feature many of the top teams in the area.
On the mats, the Kyle Thrasher Invite kicks off Friday evening with many of the top wrestling teams taking part in the tournament while the Bob Georger Invite will see many teams from the area looking to get ready for the upcoming districts in a few weeks.
On the court at Vashon Saturday, it will be another opportunity to see some of the top talents in the Midwest as Miller Career will take on Webster Groves at 1:30 p.m. while Chaminade will play Whitney Young out of Chicago at 4:30 p.m. In the nightcap, the top two teams in Class 6 and Class 4 will battle as Class 6 No.1 Staley will go against the hosts and top team in Class 4, Vashon at 7 p.m.

The prep sports scene is amid conference play as teams are looking for championships and are playing for a higher seed in upcoming district tournaments. There were a few big games on the ice this past week while a local player eclipsed a school record that has been untouched in 25 years.
Let’s get everyone up to speed in the week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break!
One of the outstanding juniors in the area set a new school record this past week as Ellie Buscher from Lutheran South broke the career blocks record that was set back in 1997 by Michelle (Breuer) Vangilder with 167. Buscher now has 187 blocks as a Lancer and that number will continue to climb for the junior. Buscher also holds the school’s single-game record with 11 blocks in a contest.

In girls’ action this past week, John Burroughs continued their winning ways as the Bombers defeated upstart Pattonville 63-47. Burroughs grabbed an early lead in the first quarter and took a 29-23 advantage into the halftime locker room. They extended the lead in the third and pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Pirates 19-10 to improve their record to 16-2 on the year. Allie Turner paced the Bombers with a game-high 21 points while Breaunna Ward added 13 markers in the win. Ward also grabbed eight rebounds and handed out five assists. Jasmine Gray paced the Pirates with 14 points in the loss as Pattonville dropped to 9-2 on the year.
On the ice, MICDS is off to an outstanding start with a 13-2-3 record in the Mid-States Hockey Association Central division and is coming off a 3-1 win over Northwest this past Monday. The Lions grabbed an early lead after a scoreless first period as Bryten Moleski scored to put Northwest on top 1-0. The Rams answered just 42 seconds later as Ameer Hajji found the back of the net to even the contest at 1-1. MICDS took the lead in the third period as Henry Cordes scored midway through the final stanza to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage. Harris Kohler put the game away for MICDS with a goal late in the game to give the Rams the win. Miles Jensen earned the win between the pipes for MICDS with 12 saves.
In the Municipal Division, CBC continues to be the team to beat as the Cadets are sitting at 16-0-3 on the year after a 4-1 win over Vianney Monday evening. After a scoreless first frame, Alexander Lane opened the scoring early in the second period to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead Kyle Price extended the lead for the Cadets with a goal 90 seconds later to extend the lead to 2-0. Vianney cut the lead in half later in the period as Jackson Stocker scored on a power play that made the score 2-1. CBC used their power play early in the third period as Tyler Williams scored on the man advantage just 23 seconds into the period to push the lead to 3-1. Joseph Lopiccolo added a goal midway through the third period to give the Cadets the win. Conner Hoff gained the win in goal for CBC with 22 saves on the night.
There is plenty of action this weekend on the prep sports scene especially on the wrestling mat as the CBC duals will take place while Fort Zumwalt East and MICDS will host their annual tournaments. In the pool, many of the top local teams will head to Cape Girardeau to take part in the City of Roses Invitational as we are less than a month away from the state swimming and diving championships.

This week in prep sports saw another coach reach a coaching milestone while another coach earned one of the highest honors in the state. The week also saw many big games as Borgia remained undefeated on the season with a pair of wins in the Washington tourney. The weekend will once again feature a pair of big time rivalry games as Kirkwood looks to remain perfect while Chaminade attempts to take control of the Metro Catholic Conference.

In the Rotating 8 tournament at Clayton, Parkway South head coach Thomas Williams reached the 400-win plateau by defeating Nerinx Hall 54-39. The win also gave Williams his 350th victory as the head coach of the Patriots. In the win over the Markers, Parkway South broke open the game by outscoring Nerinx Hall 40-11 in the middle two quarters to earn the win. Alivia McCulla paced the Patriots’ attack with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Annalise Dorr chipped in with 10 points to help Parkway South improve to 10-3 on the year.
In other coaching news, John Burroughs head swimming and diving coach Leslie Kehr earned the 2021-22 Coach of the Year award from the Missouri State High School Activities Association this past week. Kehrs has been the leader of the Bombers for many years and led Burroughs to a seventh-place finish in the Class 1 state championships last season. She has mentored many swimmers that have gone on to participate in the pool on the collegiate level.
On the court, Borgia improved to 15-0 on the season with a 62-49 win over Priory to advance to the final of the Washington Tournament Friday evening against St. Charles. The Knights raced out to a 21-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as Adam Rickman scored 26 points and grabbed 15 boards to pace Borgia in the victory.

In more action at the Rotation 8 tourney for the girls, Eureka defeated Parkway South 84-48 to advance to the championship, game against Columbia Hickman Friday evening at 8 p.m. The Wildcats took the lead early in the contest en route to the victory as four players hit double digits in the win. Zoe Cuneio led the way for Eureka with 18 points while Maison Smith added 15 markers in the victory.
The top spot in the MCC is on the line Friday evening as De Smet travels to Chaminade for a key match-up against the Red Devils. Chaminade leads the all-time series over the Spartans 35-14 and are looking to rebound after falling to De Smet last year 77-61. Chaminade is currently on a nine-game winning streak after defeating Miller Career 58-46 this past Wednesday evening. Nilavan Daniels is pacing the Rec Devil attack by scoring 20.9 points per game while BJ Ward is adding 12.5 points per contest. Ben Winker has been a force on the boards by grabbing 7.9 caroms per game. The Spartans are coming off a 54-53 win at CBC last Friday evening that snapped a two-game losing skid. Justin Duff has been the offensive leader for De Smet as he is averaging 19.6 points per game while Riley Massey is adding 10.6 points a game. Patrick Origliasso leads the Spartans in rebounding by grabbing 7.2 boards per contest.
The backyard war between Kirkwood and Webster Groves takes place Friday evening as the Pioneers are looking to defeat the Statesmen for the first time since 2013. Kirkwood is off to their best start of the season in many years with a perfect 11-0 record after defeating Hazelwood Central 64-56 Tuesday evening. First-year head coach Sam Briscoe will look to Christian Hughes to continue his outstanding play as Hughes is averaging 15.1 points per contest. Javaris Moye is adding 13.0 points per game for the Pioneers while Aidan Trawick is grabbing 4.5 boards per contest. Webster Groves has bounced back after dropping six straight with a three-game winning streak that includes a 58-46 victory over Howell Tuesday evening. Iziah Purvey is pacing the Statesmen offense with 13 points a game while grabbing 7.8 rebounds per contest. RJ Trevino is adding 11.6 points a contest while Jalen Purvey has dished out 31 assists on the year.

The post-holiday basketball schedule was jammed packed this week and the weekend will be no different as two tournaments crown champions while one of the biggest shootouts in the area takes place Saturday. We also saw one of the top girls’ players in the metro area joins the elite 1,000-point club this past Wednesday.

After finishing second at the Visitation Holiday Classic last week, John Burroughs is set to defend their tournament title Friday night against Visitation. The Bombers won their semifinal contest over Orchard Farm 67-20 Wednesday evening to improve to 12-2 on the year. Junior Allie Turner paced the Bombers with 24 points while Monet Witherspoon added 11 markers in the win. With those points, Turner joined the elite 1,000-point club. She is 12th in the metro area in scoring with 18.0 points per game. In the other semifinal, the Vivettes moved to 9-3 on the year with a 62-43 win over Fort Zumwalt East. Annie Restovich led the Visitation offensive attack with 22 points while Avery Jacoby chipped in with 12 markers. The two teams will play for the title Friday at 7 p.m.

Lutheran South and Union will match up in the final of the Lancers’ Classic Saturday afternoon after wins in the semifinals Thursday evening.
The host Lancers broke open a tight game at the end of the first quarter by outscoring Webster Groves 23-9 to grab a 30-15 advantage at the break. Lutheran South put the game in cruise control in the second half to move on to the title game. Savannah Butterfield paced the Lancers with 21 points while Ellie Buscher added a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards to push Lutheran South to the championship contest. In the other semifinal, Union outlasted Fort Zumwalt West 40-38 to advance to the title game.
On the boys’ side on the hardwood, Kirkwood continued their early season success with a 59-42 win over upstart Lafayette this past Tuesday. The Pioneers grabbed an 8-3 lead after the first quarter over the Coaches vs Cancer title holders and extended the advantage to 22-11 at the half en route to the win. Christian Hughes led the way for the MICDS Holiday Classic winners with 24 points as Kirkwood remained undefeated at 9-0.
Saturday will see many of the top teams in both Missouri and Illinois will head to Highland High School to take part in the Highland Optimist Scott Credit Union Shootout. The girls will kick off the event at 8 a.m. as Waterloo will take on Highland. The Highland boys will then hit the court in the next contest at 9:30 a.m. as the Bulldogs will play Quincy Notre Dame. Highland is paced by two of the top players in the metro area as Cade Altadonna and Jake Ottensmeier lead the way for the Bulldogs.
Belleville East will play Hillcrest at 11 a.m. with Akron commit Darrion Baker and SIU Edwardsville commit Jordan Pickett pacing the Lancers this season. At 2 p.m., East St. Louis plays one of the top teams in the state of Missouri as Staley makes the trip over from the western side of the state. The Flyers have a pair of players that have committed as Macaleab Rich will attend Kansas State and Antwan Robinson will head to Cal State next season.
In the 3:30 p.m. contest, CBC will take on Sacred Heart Griffin as juniors Nassir Binion and Anthony Gause will pace the defending Class 6 Missouri State Champions. Chaminade will hit the floor at 5:15 p.m. as the Red Devils will take on St. Rita out of Chicago. Senior BJ Ward is the leader for the Red Devils as he has committed to Southeast Missouri while Nilivan Daniels is fielding offers from many schools. In the feature game at 8:30 p.m., Missouri Class 4 defending champions Vashon will square off against Moline. The Wolverines are led by Southern Illinois commit Kennard Davis with Jayden Nicholson and sophomore Nick Randall getting offers from all over the country.

One of the best girls’ holiday tournaments begins play this Saturday while many local teams are heading to Mizzou Arena for the annual Norm Stewart Classic this Thursday thru Saturday.
Let’s prepare for a busy basketball weekend in the week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break!
The Visitation Holiday Tournament begins play on Saturday with eight games in the tourney’s first round. Incarnate Word is the top seed in the classic with a perfect 5-0 record and is currently on a 73-game winning streak as they will take on Webster Groves Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The Red Knights are led by Nebraska commit Natalie Potts, who is averaging 17.3 points per game. Potts is also averaging 6.7 rebounds per contest while Zoe Best is grabbing 5.7 rebounds per game. The Statesmen are currently 1-3 on the season and are paced by Ellie Heimann with an 8.8 points-per-game average.
The second seed in the tournament is John Burroughs as the Bombers will open play against Nerinx Hall Saturday at 10 a.m. in the first game of the day. Burroughs enters the game with a 7-1 record and is the defending Class 4 champion and will make the move to Class 5 in the 2022-23 season. Allie Turner is the leader for the Bombers as she is averaging 18.9 points per game and has a team-high 38 assists on the year. Monet Witherspoon is also a big part of the Bombers’ offense with 16.1 points per contest. The Markers are 3-4 on the year and have a very even-balanced scoring attack with Caroline Ritter leading the way with 9.5 points per game while grabbing 5.7 boards a contest.
Eureka is the No. 3 seed in the tournament and has played a very difficult schedule to start the season as they are currently 5-3 on the season with losses against John Burroughs, Hickman, and O’Fallon. Maison Smith paces the Wildcat offense with 12.4 points per game while grabbing 7.6 boards per game. Bailey Boulay also averages double figures in scoring with 10.6 points per game and has handed out 18 assists on the year. The Wildcats will take on a young Parkway West squad Saturday at 2:30 p.m. that enters the tournament with a 4-2 record. Ava Albanese leads the Longhorns’ offensive attack with 19.5 points a game and has grabbed 5.7 caroms per contest while Lexi Etchason has added 10.8 points per game.
Pattonville is a newcomer to the tournament as will start play as the fourth seed and will play Westminster Saturday at 4 p.m. The Pirates are 3-0 on the season and return everyone from last year’s team. Zoe Newland leads the way for Pattonville with 13.5 points per game while Jasmine Gray is averaging 13.3 points per contest. Kennedy Horton has been outstanding on the boards by grabbing 10.3 rebounds per game. The Wildcats are 1-2 on the year and will lean on Julia Coleman to lead the way as she is averaging 15.0 points per game with Addie Kane adding 15.3 points per contest.
The rest of the games Saturday include No.5 seed Civic Memorial taking on Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m. with No. 6 Visitation playing Lift for Life at 1 p.m. Gateway Legacy Christian will replace Whitfield in the classic and take on Parkway South at 11:30 a.m. while No. 8 seed Cardinal Ritter takes on Cor Jesu.
The annual Norm Stewart Classic started Thursday night at Mizzou Arena in a showcase that features 22 games over three days. The event was started by Coach Stewart back in 2007 with four games in a day and it has expanded to the current format. The main reason for the Classic is to raise awareness of cancer as the main benefactor of the event is the Coaches vs Cancer, which Coach Stewart started many years ago.
The Lutheran South girls’ basketball team will open play for the local teams Friday at 2 p.m. against Southern Boone while Vashon plays right after the Lancers at 4 p.m. against North Little Rock. Lutheran St. Charles wraps up the girls’ portion of the classic at 6 p.m. against Columbia Hickman.
Webster Groves kicks off the locals’ action on the boys’ side as the Statesmen take on Bishop Miege out of Kansas Friday night at 10 p.m. while Cardinal Ritter takes on New Madrid County Central in the midnight affair. In an all-St. Louis match-up at 4 a.m. Saturday morning, Principia will play Christian High School out of O’Fallon while Chaminade takes on Hickman in the noon match-up. In the final two games featuring area teams, East St. Louis and Jefferson City will battle at 4 p.m. while CBC and Kickapoo play at 6 p.m.

Now that the football season is completed, we can turn our attention to winter sports and there is plenty to talk about. On the basketball court, there will be plenty of storylines to play out this season while on the wrestling mats around the area, the keyword that will be said is parity.
One of the big early season tournaments on the boys’ basketball schedule is the Webster Classic at Roberts Gymnasium. This year’s field is loaded again with a pair of state champions taking part in the tournament.
The action started Thursday evening with John Burroughs opening the Classic with a 78-74 win over St. Mary’s. The Bombers trailed the Dragons at the half 42-39 before outscoring St. Mary’s 21-11 in the third quarter to grab a 60-53 advantage and held off a Dragons comeback in the final period to claim the victory. Trevor Reed paced the Bombers with 32 points that included a 12-for-15 night at the charity stripe. Zyree Collins led the Dragons’ attack with 29 points with Kaliel Boyd adding another 18 points for St. Mary’s in the loss.
In the second game of the night at Webster Groves, the defending Class 6 champions Christian Brothers College Cadets improved to 2-1 on the year with a 70-48 victory over McCluer North. It was a balanced attack for the Cadets as four players scored in double figures. Bobby Alford and Terron Garrett each scored 13 points while Nassir Binion and Calvin Ross both added 11 markers for CBC in the win.
On the bottom of the bracket at Webster, the defending Class 5 champs and tournament hosts Webster Groves needed overtime to defeat Lee’s Summit 73-67 to improve to 1-1 on the year. The Statesmen got off to a cold start as Lee’s Summit took an 18-3 lead after a quarter of action, but Webster Groves started to find their footing in the second quarter as they cut the deficit to 27-20 at the half. Lee’s Summit extended the lead to 51-40 at the end of the third quarter before Webster outscored them 21-11 to force overtime. In the extra session, the Statesmen raced out to a six lead and never turned back in getting the win. Jalen Purvey led the way for the Statesmen with 20 points while Iziah Purvey added 18 points in the victory.
In the nightcap, Whitfield got out to an early lead and cruised to a 61-27 win over Confluence to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Action in the Classic resumes Friday with St. Mary’s taking on McCluer North at 4 p.m. and Lee’s Summit playing Confluence at 5:30 p.m. on the consolation side of the bracket. The semifinals will begin at 7 p.m. with CBC facing off against John Burroughs with Webster Groves and Whitfield playing at 8:30 p.m. The championship game of the tournament will be Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
In girls’ action Thursday evening, the streak is still in tack as Incarnate Word is playing in a tournament in Hawaii and won their first game over Campbell, Hawaii 75-39 to push their consecutive game-winning streak to 71 games. The Red Knights will take on Iolani, Hawaii Friday night at 11:50 p.m.
One of the best girls’ tournaments in Jefferson County wraps up Friday evening as Lutheran South will take on North County in the title game of the Town & Country Bank Tournament at Herculaneum. The Lancers defeated Notre Dame 54-38 in the first semifinal this past Wednesday evening while North County gained a 46-31 victory over the host Blackcats. The title game is slated for 8:30 p.m. Friday evening with Notre Dame and Herculaneum playing in the third-place game at 7 p.m.
On the coaching side of things, Parkway South girls swimming and diving coach Blakeleigh Mathes was named the Missouri State High School Activities Association Coach of the Year after she led the Patriots to the Class 2 state title this past February.
In the football coaching ranks, St. Louis University High School announced that Adam Cruz will remain as the head coach of the Jr. Bills football program. Cruz was named the interim coach back in late May and led SLUH to a 3-7 mark this past season against one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Thanksgiving weekend started with a bang as the Frisco Bell will remain at Kirkwood after the Pioneers won the annual Turkey Day game against Webster Groves while the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 6 football title is on the line Saturday. East St. Louis will look to bring the Illinois High School Association Class 6A crown back to the metro area and the semifinals in Missouri will feature a few heavyweight battles.
It was the 113th edition of Turkey Day at historic Moss Field Thursday as Kirkwood remained the holders of the prized Frisco Bell with a 49-7 victory over Webster Groves. It was the last football game played on the Moss Field grass as we know it as a new stadium complex will start to go up very soon thanks to the Webster Groves community passing a bond issue a few months back. It will include a new play turf field, all-weather track, stands and press box, and state-of-the-art locker rooms. So, the day was extremely special for all involved.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start in the first quarter as Tyler Macon hauled in a 24-yard pass from Creighton Wise to take an early 7-0 lead. After the Kirkwood defense forced a 3-and-out, Macon returned a punt 52 yards to the house to grab a 14-0 advantage. The Statesmen answered on their next drive as Trevion Hulsey rumbled 27 yards to cut the deficit to 14-7. The Pioneers responded as Larry Robinson caught a Wise pass for 49 yards on an untimed down after penalty with no time remaining in the first quarter to push the lead to 21-7. In the second quarter, Wise used his running ability to score from 10 yards out with 4:32 left in the half and then threw his third touchdown strike to Kam Richardson with 61 seconds remaining in the half to give Kirkwood a 35-7 lead into the locker room.
It was all Deion Brown in the third quarter as he scored both of his touchdowns as he had runs of 23 and 48 yards to extend the Pioneer’s lead to 42-7. Macon sealed the deal in the fourth as he scored his third touchdown of the afternoon with a 46-yard reception from Owen Nesslage to put the score at 49-7 as it returned the Frisco Bell to the halls of Kirkwood High for the ninth consecutive year.
Brown finished the game with 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns to finish a record-setting year as he is now the career leader at Kirkwood in rushing yards in a season and he now holds the career rushing mark in the storied history of Pioneer football. Macon led the receiving corps for Kirkwood as he grabbed three catches for 79 yards and two scores. Hulsey paced the Webster Groves offense with 76 yards on 12 carries.
The MSHSAA Class 6 state championship game will take place Saturday at Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo., as CBC will look to claim back-to-back titles and their fifth championship in eight years. The Cadets will take on a familiar foe in Lee’s Summit North. The two teams met in last year’s state semifinal as CBC came back from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Broncos 28-21.
The Cadets are led by a trio of running backs who all have been a big part of CBC’s success this season. Jeremiah Love paces the group with 1,080 yards on the ground with 19 touchdowns while Dylan Van has added 868 yards and 13 scores. Ralph Dixon adds to the ground attack with 721 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cole McKey will handle the quarterback duties for the Cadets with 1,655 yards through the air and 21 scoring strikes. Jeremiah McClellan has been the center of the passing game for CBC with 1,042 yards in receptions and 13 touchdowns.
The Broncos also have a potent rushing attack as Tanner Howes leads the way with 1,179 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns while Quincey Baker has added 991 yards and eight scores for Lee’s Summit North. Elijah Leonard will run the Bronco offense as he has 864 yards passing with 10 touchdowns. His favorite target is Isaiah Mozee as he has grabbed 59 receptions for 748 yards and 10 scores.
Over on the Illinois side of the river, East St. Louis takes on Prairie Ridge out of Crystal Lake in the IHSA Class 6A title game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill. The two teams matched up back in 2019 in the 6A final with the Flyers winning 43-21. East St. Louis is looking to claim their 10th IHSA state football championship.
TaRyan Martin leads the Flyers offense with 1,382 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns while quarterback Robert Battle has thrown for 1,916 yards and 21 scores and has added 670 yards rushing and 10 more touchdowns. Jesse Watson has been outstanding on the edge for East St. Louis with 455 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Crystal Lake is looking to win its fourth state title.
It is semifinal Saturday in Missouri as six local teams will look to advance to the state title games next weekend in Columbia.
In Class 5, it is a battle of the top two teams in the state as Francis Howell travels to Southwest Missouri to take on Carthage Saturday at 1 p.m. The Tigers have been on top of the state poll all season while the Vikings have been slotted into the second spot for the majority of the year. In the other Class 5 semifinal, Ft. Osage will head to Cape Girardeau to take on Central Saturday at 1 p.m.
In Class 4 semifinal action, St. Mary’s will head across the state to play the defending state champions in Smithville Saturday at 1 p.m. The Dragons are also looking to win their second straight state title after winning the Class 3 crown last season. On the other side of the Class 4 bracket, upstart St. Dominic will play host to West Plains Saturday at 1 p.m. as well. The Crusaders are looking to make their first appearance in the state championship game.
Cardinal Ritter has been the top team in Class 3 for most of the year and they will look to advance to the championship game for the third time in school history as they will head to Pleasant Hill to take on the Roosters Saturday at 1 p.m. In the other semifinal, Sullivan hit the road to Reed Springs to play the Wolves Saturday at 1 p.m. The Eagles are attempting to return to the title game for the first time since 1976.
And finally, in Class 1, Duchesne will head to Gower, Mo., to take on East Buchanan Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers have not been to the state championship game since 1982 and are looking to win their first football title. In the other semifinal, Monroe City and Adrian will do battle for the right to play in the title game next weekend.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association football playoffs are in the home stretch as a pair of local teams will play in the Class 6 semifinals while other area squads head to the state quarterfinals. It is also state championship weekend at the WorldWide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo., as seven local teams look to bring more state titles back to the metro area.
Let’s take a look at a busy weekend in today’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.
The Metro Catholic Conference sees two of their football teams head to the Class 6 semifinals as CBC and De Smet will look to a possible re-match next week in Columbia, Mo., at the state finals.
The Cadets will travel to Liberty, Mo., to take on Liberty North in the first semifinal contest Saturday at 1 p.m. This is a rematch of last year’s title game which saw CBC defeat the Eagles 48-21. The Cadets will rely on the rushing attack of Dylan Vann and Jeremyah Love to get back to the championship game. Love leads CBC in rushing with 908 yards and 16 touchdowns while Vann has added 788 yards and 12 more scores. Quarterback Cole McKey has had an outstanding season to this point with 101 completions for 1,552 yards and 21 touchdowns. Jeremiah McClellan has been the go-to receiver for the Cadets with 949 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year. Liberty North will hang their hat on the defensive side of the ball as the Eagles have not allowed more than 14 in a game all season.
After playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, De Smet returns to the semifinal contest for the third time in four years as the Spartans will host Lee’s Summit North Friday at 7 p.m. De Smet needed to travel for all of their district contests, which included a 44-21 victory over Rock Bridge in the title game. Quarterback Christian Cotton has accounted for 1,616 yards through the air and 14 scores while rushing for another 1,078 yards and 17 touchdowns. Demetrion Cannon has been Cotton’s favorite target outside with 639 receiving yards and five scores. The Broncos enter the semifinal with an 11-1 record as their only loss was to Liberty North in the season’s opening game. Lee’s Summit North has allowed only 6.7 points per game over the last seven contests.
In Class 5, two GAC rivals will meet up for the second time this season in the quarterfinals as Francis Howell takes on Timberland. The Vikings handed the Wolves a 49-14 defeat earlier this season and are coming off a 42-7 win over Fort Zumwalt North in the district final. Adam Shipley is the leader of the Vikings offense with over 1,700 yards passing and 22 scores while adding another 406 yards rushing with eight touchdowns. Timberland enters the contest after traveling to Helias and returning home with a 41-24 win over Helias to claim the district crown. AJ Raines paces the Wolves offense with 2,845 yards through the air and 32 touchdown passes, adding 1,065 yards rushing and another 15 scores.

The field is set for the boys’ soccer semifinals Friday as seven teams will make their way to the pitch in Fenton.
In Class 1, Bishop DuBourg defeated Brentwood 3-0 to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 1979 while Borgia advanced to take on the Cavaliers with a convincing 7-0 victory over Duchesne. The rivals from the AAA conference will play Friday at 10 a.m.
In Class 2, Orchard Farm moved on to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over Helias and will face Saxony Lutheran, who defeated Principia 1-0. That match-up will happen Friday at 2:30 p.m.
In Class 3, Webster Groves returns to the state semifinals after defeating Cape Notre Dame 4-0 Saturday. The Statesmen are back in the state final four for the first time since 2019. They will take on Whitfield, who beat Fort Zumwalt East 1-0. The defending Class 2 champion Warriors moved up in class this season and will look to win their ninth state title.
A pair of local teams will match up in the Class 4 semifinals as CBC heads back to the final four for the first time since 2018 as the Cadets defeated Lindbergh 1-0 Saturday. CBC is looking for its 11th state championship. They will take on St. Dominic after the Crusaders beat Chaminade 2-1. St. Dominic will attempt to win their sixth and first state championship since 2013.

It will be a busy weekend with the district finals taking place in football in Missouri while the third round of the football playoffs will happen in Illinois, state quarterfinals in soccer, and the Missouri State High School Activities Association State Boys’ State Swimming and Diving Championships taking place at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo.
Let’s preview the weekend in this week’s edition of the Friday Fast Break.
We start on the gridiron, there are many storylines in the area when it comes to the district finals. Plus, many teams are not only playing for the title but the right to host either the state semifinals or quarterfinals next week.
In Class 6, many will be heading to West County as Marquette travels up east on Interstate 40 to take on CBC. Both teams are coming off huge wins last week as the Mustangs defeated Seckman while the Cadets beat Kirkwood. This will be a match-up that will see one of the area’s top quarterbacks in Marquette’s Jack Ahlbrand going against one the top running back duos in the state with Dylan Van and Jeremiyah Love.
The feature match-up in Class 5 will see Eureka play host to MICDS in a battle of the top two seeds in their district. The top-seeded Wildcats will need a big game out of Kevin Emmanuel to advance to the quarterfinals while the Rams will use both Winston Moore and Steven Hall in the backfield as the two combined for 478 yards in their victory over Lafayette last week.
In the marquee match-up in class 4, Summit will head to South City to take on St. Mary’s in a much-anticipated contest for the district title. The Falcons are coming off an impressive victory over previously undefeated Union and will turn to running back Elijah Stevens to lead the offensive attack. The Dragons kept their hopes of returning to the state championship game with a win over Gateway as quarterback David Leonard will have control of St. Mary’s high-powered offense.
