Episode Transcript

Alexander Zalben
Welcome to MarvelVision, a podcast about Marvel, the MCU and right now a bunch of news updates. I’m Alex.

Justin Tyler
Justin. Also news updates.

Pete LePage
I’m Pete.

Alexander Zalben
Pete also last name news updates. On this episode, we are going to be talking about some big stories that are happening in the world of Marvel. Well, at least one big story happening in the world of Marvel and this is a huge one. And frankly, I don’t think people realize exactly how huge or big of a deal this is.

Victoria Alonso Exits Marvel StudiosYeah, that Victoria Alonso has exited Marvel Studios. This is a story that has been trucking along I imagine by the time we get this podcast up, frankly the story will have gone through a bunch more iterations and more stuff will come out but as we’re talking about it right now, this broke through the Hollywood Reporter. Victoria Alonso, if you don’t know is basically one of the original three people of the MCU she goes back to Iron Man the original movie, along with Louis D’Esposito. Yeah, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito and Kevin Feige are basically just like main three producers that shepherded the whole MCU and everybody thinks about it. As Kevin Feige is like, I’m this lone guy that kept it going. It’s certainly like He’s the face of it.

Justin Tyler
but there are like the A-team he’s the face.

Alexander Zalben
Exactly. And Victoria Alonso is the Mr. T. I never watched that show. Is that accurate?

Pete LePage
Oh my god. Yeah, it’s the show.

Alexander Zalben
I don’t know they were in a van, I don’t like vans, they’re creepy

Pete LePage
What! That was one of the coolest vans of all time.

Justin Tyler
like so you’re gonna you’re gonna hear a noise in your living room one night and walk out there and to be peed with a with a team of DVDs and being like, buckle up, motherfucker. We’re riding on this for the next eight hours.

Alexander Zalben
So Victoria Alonso was one of those essentially original three she grew over the years to become I believe, the official title in the past couple of years was VP of VFX, and physical production. So basically, the way that it worked out is while Kevin Feige was you know, talking to the artists and running the creative and doing all that sort of stuff, Louis D’Esposito was the guy who was dealing with the money people he was talking to the investors, he was talking to the advertisers and things like that. And Victoria Alonso was the person who’s basically like, post production and pre production is all her so she’s the person, particularly how Marvel works. And a lot of this has come out of the past couple of days more specifically, that they’re like the second they say, Hey, we’re gonna make Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She’s like, great, what does this look like? We’re going to start designing sets. We’re going to start deciding props. We’re going to add ematic out the sequences, all this stuff, and she’s the person who’s leading that charge now, and there’s a lot of information we need to put out there. So we’re going to try to put it out upfront, but as you’re probably all aware, over the past couple of months, there’s been a lot of things that have come out very negatively about VFX the press where the VFX artists have talked about how they’ve been insanely overworked Marvel gives them changes the last second doesn’t seem to what they want, and fans have been responding pretty negatively as well, particularly into the last couple of movies and TV shows in terms of how they look. So ostensibly. And there’s a guy named Chris Lee, who’s been doing a lot of reporting about this over at Vulture who came out immediately after it was announced she was exiting there was like, yeah, the VFX people hate her. Like they hate her. They think she’s a tyrant. She is doesn’t know she’s the person who is behind all of this. And then we’ve heard things a little. Well, this is the thing and this is the thing that makes it tough to parse is on the opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve heard a lot of other things about people they’re like, well, first of all, she’s amazing, particularly if she has been a huge champion of women in the industry, to the point that they just released I think, a week or two ago, this whole documentary series about women of Marvel that she was prominently featured in so she’s been very big on that and because she I think it was her project sort of the whole time. Yeah, exactly. And she is also she’s a queer woman of color is the other thing and openly queer. So like, That’s a rarity in this industry, particularly at that level. So there’s a lot of other people who would push back and be like, no, these VFX artists are just men who don’t like a woman telling them what to do. So there’s a lot of behind the scenes scuttlebutt going on and a lot of back and forth and a lot of reporting about it. But the big deal here is she has gone and I think I’ve certainly heard from people that it was not like, Well, I’m leaving Marvel Studios, it was she was fired, and she was fired for ridiculous reasons. Like they kind of made up an excuse to fire her behind the scenes, essentially, to bake her into a fall guy, you know, be like what happens? Yes, these movies have been, have been doing well, particularly quantum mania. Didn’t do to be generous, not nearly what they need it to be doing. And so she somebody needed to take the blame, and she was the one that took the blame. So go ahead, Justin.

Justin Tyler
Well, I was gonna say like, when I read the story and saw that she was sort of the high end post producer for for the MCU. I was like, okay, that’s been a problem point. For a long time. A pain point is the corporate terminology. So I do think I think that may be why but also, it’s strange to me like you don’t need a fall guy and fall person that high. You could find someone lower to be like, you are in charge of Phase Five post or like, anything or just the Ant-Man post, whatever, like, whatever needed to go like if you need to, like sacrifice someone it could be someone lower than her but the other thing I thought is from a VFX point of view, VFX are changing so much and how they’re made and done and the pace at which they’re made. I think maybe if she is sort of an old guard when it comes to that maybe they want you want to bring in some new energy that can have a different sense of that part of the industry from from a top level point of view. A B I also think if the way that the DC announcements have come out since James Gunn took over are like we’re gonna start to put creative first writers first and if her whole thing is like, hey, oh, you’re gonna do Ant-Man, I’ll start designing the set pieces. That’s not how they want to move forward anymore. It’s we want to like actually write a script first and then start doing that. So maybe she just is part of an old way of doing things.

Alexander Zalben
That definitely seems like even though it’s a very negative thing, a positive way of looking at it. A couple of other things that I threw out there just to respond to what you’re saying. Part of the reason that I think they targeted her is if you fire the guy who was in charge of Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania VFX. That’s not that doesn’t seem to be the scale of the problem, right? Like people complained about She-Hulk. They complained about Ant-Man, they complained about people from Ant-Man being pulled over to Black Panther Wakanda Forever, all of these different things that are going on that who ultimately just the buck stops with that’s the head of VFX right? Yeah. So particularly if you’re looking for somebody prominent there who you could point the finger at, that’s a much clearer thing, particularly to the investors behind the scenes who are like, Yo, you’re losing us money on these movies and TV shows. They’re not driving the same try that type of traffic to Disney plus, or anything like that. Somebody’s gotta go. So having somebody that high up, that’s a way of saying, Oh, look, we got rid of the person who was the problem, however, and this is the other side of it even beyond whatever Victoria Alonso did or didn’t do. It doesn’t solve the problem.

Justin Tyler
Right? Exactly. And we’re purely speculating. It could be any number of reasons that we don’t know. But I agree, like firing someone is a fine solution to talk about, but it doesn’t actually fix your problem. It doesn’t actually move everything forward. It’s just like a blame a slash punishment thing.

Alexander Zalben
Well, and if you think about it from a logistical perspective, and almost makes it worse, right, because even if she was not doing a great job at it, you down don’t have the person who is in charge of that thing. You have 13 million projects that are in development at the current time.

Justin Tyler
It’s like when we fire the fourth host Dave, and

Alexander Zalben
he was in charge of everything. I don’t even– Are we recording this? He Dave was always in charge of recording and-

Justin Tyler
he pressed record.

Alexander Zalben
Pete what’s your take on this?

Pete LePage
Well, first off, I don’t fucking know. I just think it’s it sucks that someone who has an amazing track record like she has it has been killing it since day one got the shaft. So that billows and it seems like they made it like piled a bunch of things on her and pointed out you know, it just sucks when the business side of things can ruin some great creativity and also someone who is very good at their job or whatever is going on. So

Justin Tyler
what if you found out that she was some sort of monster that like didn’t bag and board her comics or something?

Pete LePage
Well yeah, then she just got to go. But yeah, it’s rough. I have no idea what’s going on behind closed doors over there. What’s really going on, but the fact that she’s been there since Iron Man makes me nervous because that was the real start of this new Marvel phase that we see. So

Alexander Zalben
well. I think that gets into the bigger thing that is 100% pure speculation isn’t based on anything necessarily, but I think her leaving should really set up alarm bells about what is going on at Marvel. We’ve been talking about this a bit anyway, in terms of like we just said the movies and TV shows haven’t been hitting it exactly the same way. Certainly a lot of people are feeling overwhelmed about the amount of content through Phase four. And we’re like, Oh, that’s okay. I can go watch something else. Or alternatively, there are people who feel like the movies aren’t as strong they just did. You’ve talked a lot about what is the story of this, where’s this going? So for the first time, we felt like there were these cracks in Marvel’s armor for the first time in a decade, and to have Victoria Alonso one of this trio out in such a shocking way. That’s not a crack that’s like an arm of the arbour falling off and no longer being there. And it makes me legitimately very worried about Marvel’s future like I they’re not going to stop making movies. They’re not going to stop making TV shows. But this if anything, potentially and Pete’s gonna really react to be saying this but potentially could be the beginning of the end for Marvel. Legitimately.

Justin Tyler
What a statement what a strong statement.

Alexander Zalben
It is I’m saying like it is the strongest indication that we could be heading in that direction that we’ve had so far.

Justin Tyler
Perhaps but I also think Marvel succeeded in an truly unprecedented way for the last decade. And there have been some missteps but I think you can write that ship and I think guardians three will be a big step in that direction. And as long as they sort of follow that thread, I think they’ll be in good shape. Let’s not forget that Disney. As the corporate parents, they’re also merciless when it comes to like, like goals. And if you’re not meeting your mark, yeah, we’re gonna take we’re gonna cut an arm off and maybe that arm was this human being.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah. Well, it sucks and I don’t think it’s the end of it. This is the other part I won’t get too. much into it for various reasons. But I think this is just the beginning of this story. There’s a little bit more to the reason they used to get rid of her from Marvel that may lead to other things happening. Law things potentially so serious. Yeah. So there’s gonna be a lot more we’re gonna hear about this, and it may get worse before it gets better. But why don’t we move on to some more fun news items.

Florence Pugh Comments on ThunderboltsThis is the fluffiest possible news item, but Florence Pugh is touring around with her new movie that she’s doing with Zach Braff. And of course got asked about Thunderbolts, this was over on Gamesradar. And she said, I don’t know much about what we’re shooting or what the storyline is. But I’m very lucky to be in this position. That family is very supportive one, whatever they give me, I’ll ask the hell out of it.

Justin Tyler
Love the vibe don’t love the first half of that.

Alexander Zalben
That it it’s I mean not to tie back to this first thing-

Pete LePage
The hard you you don’t know what they’re you don’t I mean, they they don’t explain it to you. It’s gotta be hard as an actor to kind of be like, what are we doing? Like what’s going on? You know,

Justin Tyler
it’s like the idea that she’s like, oh, yeah, if you just point to me and say act angry at this tennis ball. I will. It’s like, oh, that was the literal problem with Ant-Man.

Alexander Zalben
Well, but that’s also we didn’t talk about this last week on the podcast, but there was this quote that was getting passed around from Anthony Mackie, which I didn’t write down so I’m gonna paraphrase here and I think he was joking a little bit for a fact. But he was talking about how Marvel gets him to read scripts that he was like, Yeah, I don’t know. They call me in. I gotta fly over to this computer with a password and there’s an intern they’re eating Cheetos, and he’s like, come on, Hurry up, and I’m like, yo, I’m dyslexic. And he’s like, I don’t care. So

Pete LePage
sounds like a great atmosphere Marvel’s creating there.

Alexander Zalben
This is the problem. If you think about like this Florence Pugh quote, again, she was asked on a carpet so she’s giving like a quick quippy answer, so I’m not gonna read too much into it. But there is the potential for like, they put up that picture of Thunderbolts and she was like, Oh, um, am I in that? Oh, yeah. So not great. Not great.

Justin Tyler
Yeah. But also like, we don’t know how far along in the process it may be that that she hasn’t really done much or like what we know. I mean, maybe we do know more about well, how far along the process where I guess I don’t so it may be that she’s just not in it. Yeah.

Daredevil: Born Again May Feature Flashbacks To Kingpin With HairAlexander Zalben
Yeah. Here is another couple of quick hits. Daredevil Born Again is currently filming here in New York and a little bit of a spoiler. I don’t really think so. But seems like there are some scenes that are gonna be flashbacks to the 90s including what looks like Kingpin as a kid with hair. Pete’s strong opinions about this sort of thing. What do you think?

Pete LePage
Well, that’s, that would be crazy. And I don’t know if I want to see the king pin with air. You don’t I mean, like, I like my king being just the way he is, but could be interesting. You guys. I need you to be out there on the streets, seeing where they’re shooting. What’s going on, though. So you got to get out there, man. start checking out some of the legal you know, get to Hell’s Kitchen. See where they’re filming man.

Justin Tyler
I’m on the street poking. Anytime I see someone with a camera. I knock them over and said hey, this is a Kingpin with hair here

Pete LePage
Marvel what’s going on?

Alexander Zalben
I do love I’m sure you guys have not been paying attention to this but I do love whenever something from Daredevil Born Again pops up in my feed. Because people are going nuts. They’re like, Oh my god. Here it is the first look at Charlie Cox. And I’m like he’s wearing red glasses in a suit. We saw that for three seasons. What are you guys doing here?

Justin Tyler
They’re shooting the cool stuff inside away from people. But Kingpin with hair like I’m down for a Princepin. Let’s see it.

Alexander Zalben
Absolutely. Last thing I’ll say about this. There was also a set photo that came out of Charlie Cox walking by a church and of the church. There was a date on there that was 2000 So people were like, oh my god this takes place during the Blip that’s why Karen and Foggy aren’t gonna be there because they’re blipped away. I think it was just that was just on the church. There was just the church and

Pete LePage
yeah, they haven’t even said sign since 2000.

Alexander Zalben
100% come to New York fellas, you’ll find out.

Justin Tyler
They don’t do a lot of re etching of ancient stones here for movie sets. That’s something they do in post, but maybe a great way to cover fog is just be like he was the one who got blipped permanently.

Alexander Zalben
Foggy blipped for our sins. Yeah. There we go.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos Adds Composer Christophe BeckTo other TV things Agatha Coven of Chaos has added Christophe Beck. Christophe Beck previously composed the music for the three Ant-Man movies and also co-scored Hawkeye.

Justin Tyler
Oh, cool. Sounds good Christmas music maybe maybe it’s all Christmas music.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah. musical numbers.

Justin Tyler
Yeah. I mean, this show that that series The Agatha Coven of Chaos could easily have many musical numbers. That show is a real question mark about what’s going on.

Pete LePage
I’m very excited for that show. That could be a really, really well done show.

Alexander Zalben
Absolutely. And this is clearly a composer that knows how to work in the Marvel Universe. I don’t think the Ant-Man score necessarily jumped out at me or the Hawkeye score.

Justin Tyler
Favorite part of the Ant-Man movies is score.

Alexander Zalben
The score. That’s what the first one was all about was the score. The second one leaned a little less into the crime aspect. Yeah.

Justin Tyler
Nice, good. Yeah, that’s,

Alexander Zalben
but yeah, it’s fine. If you want. It’ll be good. Get Marc Shaiman. I think it was MarkcShaiman who did the musical numbers so get them back? Oh, no, it was the Lopezs did the music. And of course, yeah, please get them to work on the show.

Megan McDonnell and Peter Cameron Join Vision Quest As Writers, Under Jac Schaeffer as Head Writer and EPAnd last but not least, Megan McDonnell and Peter Cameron have joined VisionQuest as writers under Jac Schaeffer, his head writer and EP both of them wrote on WandaVision, so we’re Agatha Coven of Chaos is doing whatever it’s doing and seems the most direct sequel to WandaVision. This seems to be taking the WandaVision team and moving them on to a story of white vision, which is very exciting to me.

Justin Tyler
well and let me say while it may seem that Agatha is the sequel, this feels like the spiritual sequel that this will have the what we loved about WandaVision and taken into a new direction.

Alexander Zalben
Well trying to get what do you want to see out of VisionQuest because we know White Vision left after the whole Ship of Theseus thing at the end of WandaVision? There’s a whole Vision Quest storyline of the West Coast Avengers comic books. I don’t think they’re gonna directly adapt that in any way because that doesn’t make any sense. But what do you want to see here? What do you want to see in the storyline in the show potentially?

Justin Tyler
I would like to see even though it’s a little bit duplicating the WandaVision stuff. I would like to see some of the Tom King Vision Series here where vision creates a family and tries to live a suburban life. That I love that comic series and I think there’s a lot of just great adaptability there to bring that to TV. So that and really what I want to see is visions version. I think these two series should almost like be bookends to each other. I want to see visions version of the quest of finding out who he is without his partner or like what his life is basically.

Alexander Zalben
Pete What about you what do you want to see on a VisionQuest?

Pete LePage
Good show.

Alexander Zalben
Great. Thanks, Pete. I agree with that. I think you know, to jump off of what you were saying, Justin, what I would love to see out of this. WandaVision, at least critically is still the strongest show that Disney has put out and I think at least part of that is how they executed it creatively on an episodic basis. So if they can really think about that, like what is the creative execution? I don’t need to see them do sitcom episodes except with vision or anything like that. But what is the thing that makes this a show? Why are you doing this show? And beyond? This is the question they should be asking for all of these things. But beyond like, it’s a franchise extension. Are we like these characters? What can they do? What is the reason for having a show about Vision and how are we doing it as a TV show? Given the gap, Jac Schaeffer, given that you have these two writers coming on and potentially more of the staff, that makes me very excited for the potential of something that can feel really really special?

Justin Tyler
Agreed What if his quest is to coach up a struggling British football team and try to make them win the league you know?

Alexander Zalben
Oh, Viz Lasso?

Justin Tyler
Viz Lasso

Alexander Zalben
Oh man, Pete, would you be more into it then?

Pete LePage
Yes.

Alexander Zalben
Great.

Justin Tyler
Pete, only giving hard short answers.

Alexander Zalben

Alexander Zalben
Welcome to MarvelVision, a podcast about Marvel, the MCU and right now all the Marvel news you can use. I’m Alex.

Justin Tyler
Justin, you’re gonna use this news. Oh, yeah. Daily life. Like when the cavemen first emerged from cave… Caves. The first thing they needed was fire. And Marvel news

Alexander Zalben
Exactly they were like give me updates about Thunderbolts. And that’s one of the things we’re gonna do here on the podcast. We have a bunch of news items that have broken over the course of the past week. Just to mention at the top if you’ve got a tip or a rumor or something you want us to cover. Email us at ComicBookClubLive@gmail.com

Justin Tyler
Hit us up at the news desk. Our fleet of young reporters will definitely dive in.

Alexander Zalben
Cubs, again tied back to the whole cave thing. That’s what we’re doing here. It’s a whole theme this episode. Let’s jump into it. This is a big one. This is very rumory. This comes from a bunch of different sources, but I saw this over on CBR, Comic Book Resources. Is Marvel working on a secret Mephisto special? There’s a couple of layers to this rumor here. The first part is that Sacha Baron Cohen is very heavily rumored to be playing Mephisto in Ironheart the spin off of Black Panther Wakanda Forever. I believe that was confirmed by Deadline, though not confirmed by Marvel. Of course they haven’t said anything about that casting however, the second part of this rumor is that Sacha Baron Cohen is currently reprising his role as Mephisto and shooting on the scene is set as Agatha: Coven of Chaos to do a Mephisto one shot special presentation a la the Werewolf by Night thing or the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special all focused on Mephisto What do you think about this because I have some reservations let’s say.

Justin Tyler
I think reservations– it’s very funny to me how much we were like Mephistos coming we’re gonna see him he’s a coming up, I guaranteed that’s what it is. Yeah. And now that now we have sort of weirdly too much Mephisto probably happening and it feels– now it feels weird. It feels like Ironheart and Mephisto feel like not part of the same sort of type of story potentially. But that’s where it is in a special from Mephisto actually fits more for me, but then it makes me feel like are they setting up in Mephisto for another larger role, perhaps in some sort of Spider-Man universe, where in fact Mephisto has had a large role in the comic books, undoing the marriage between he and Mary Jane. Now obviously they’re not married. But as we learned at the end of the last movie, they have no– she doesn’t know him. You’re gonna have something that a young Peter Parker might be willing to make a deal with a devil about? Because of his true love.

Alexander Zalben
That would be absolutely wild. Just to take a quick step back to the whole Ironheart that was

Justin Tyler
that was a lot it was a lot of stuff. That was a lot of stuff. But that’s what I’m excited about.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, yeah, no, I get it. I get it. The thing about Ironheart and obviously we don’t specifically know the plot, but we do know that Anthony Ramos I believe it’s Anthony Ramos is playing The Hood. And The Hood gets his demonic hood by making a deal with the devil. So it would make sense that Mephisto is in there in some way we have talked about before about how there’s a potential interesting clash between magic and science going on in the show, not what I’d expect by Ironheart. But I’m very curious to see it. Yeah, I think that holds me up a little bit. I totally believe that Sacha Baron Cohen would play Mephisto

Justin Tyler
It’s great casting. Let’s say that that’s a good look for them. I feel like he has the kind of charisma and comedic chops that like Robert Downey Jr. Brought to their original Tony Stark, you know,

Alexander Zalben
the thing that holds me up a little bit about this current stage of the rumor and I’m curious as somebody who does production to get your commentary on this is the idea that they’re shooting him Mephisto special on the set the same time they’re shooting Agatha: Coven of Chaos. That seems weird to me.

Justin Tyler
I mean, that is a little weird, unless it may that saying it that way makes me think that Mephisto will also appear in the Agatha show, which makes a lot of sense from which the devil point of view that’s a strong, obvious connect. As far as shooting something on the same set. That’s not that strange. It may be that act from a production point of view and maybe they had to stop down for for, for some sort of production reason, like one of the stars had to go do something else. So they had a couple of days on the stage. They were like, Okay, let’s slide the Mephisto thing in here, especially if it’s, if it’s a set, like if it’s a stage like that has the Volume on it, and it can be anything there’s no real loss there. Or if it’s something where like it gets a Volume you can just put anything back there. So there’s no real it’s just moving props in and out or set pieces. So from a production point of view, I don’t find that to be too strange. In fact, it may be some nice synergy if there’s any sort of similar storylines between Agatha and Mephisto.

Alexander Zalben
It also the– okay that makes a lot of sense. I get that. I do think that then question becomes about scheduling, something we’re gonna be talking about a little later in the podcast, because we still don’t know when any of these shows are coming out. Agatha: Coven of Chaos they’ve talked about maybe sometime next year. They’re saying Mephisto special might be sometime this year. If there is a specific tie with them. I can see some sort of like Mephistos Day Off type thing happening where you has been, what has– Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-ing his way through Agatha: Coven of Chaos, but then you need that to come first. So lots of question marks here seems potentially reasonable, but I guess we’ll see what happens.

Justin Tyler
Well, and then you get into like, and I know we’re going to talk about this in a little bit. But like the idea that like Marvel’s pulling back, like we’re not going to do as many things because Agatha: Coven of Chaos feels like the actual opposite of that, where it’s like, yeah, this is a spinoff from sort of a spin off about a character that we all love, but doesn’t relate to a lot of other modern marvel continuity. It’s like stepping out on one tree limb as opposed to connecting back to a larger piece. So the fact that the Agatha is still going forward, and we’re going to see that and Mephisto is potentially an extension of that even feels very strange. So I do that may may be it was originally a secondary thing, but they want to put Mephisto in first, because they’ve heard the fan outcry back from earlier on in in the MCU. And they’re like, well, this there seems to be an interest in this character. So let’s make this more of a centerpiece.

Alexander Zalben
Well, let’s talk about a character that everybody is interested in, which is the Scarlet Witch Elizabeth Olsen has been touring around with her new TV show, excuse me, I was about to say movie and getting a lot of questions, of course about Scarlet Witch. The first one, I’ll try to do my best Elizabeth Olsen impression here in terms of how she answered this. It’s not actually going to be an impression– but she was talking to Deadline and they asked her about returning as Wanda after a Multiverse of Madness. And she said, I don’t know ever how to answer these questions, except I don’t… I think I’ll be back. And there was that

Justin Tyler
You could hear her agent in her brain being like Don’t say you’re not coming back. Say you want to come back.

Alexander Zalben
And the weird thing about the quote was just be like except I it was hard to tell if she was like doing a fun bit of like, I don’t think I’ll be back. I don’t I think I’ll be like maybe she was doing a bit. Maybe she was saying something very weird. A little more definitive. She talked to ScreenRant about this as well when she was on a carpet. I think there’s down at South by Southwest. We can do anything with her now. I feel like we’ve done so much. Now we can really have fun. I feel like there’s a lot more humor to be had with her. She’s often the emotion of a story and I’m curious to see what we could explore and hopefully we can give her some redemption. So what do you think about that, given that she was flat as a pancake at the end of Multiverse of Madness? Do you want to see Scarlet Witch back? How do you want to see Scarlet Witch back? What’s your take on it?

Justin Tyler
Well, just if I were to decipher that quote directly, where it’s like she could be funny too, and we could redeem her a little bit. I’m like, that feels like an episode of Agatha. Like they, like somehow conjure her from beyond or something like that. And it’s like more of a comedic because like Agatha is, we think is a comedy, right? It’s at least comedic ly driven, rather than like another sort of Scarlet Witch from Dr. Strange style like this is a absolute monster trying to take over the world. So I do. I’ll tell you

Alexander Zalben
Not to interrupt, but if it’s Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, Amy Poehler and a bunch of other cast members in a deathly serious drama? They’ve got a horribly wrong somewhere.

Justin Tyler
I mean, the never know what’s happening. So– So anyway, like I think her quote feels like she’s dancing around something very obvious that Scarlet Witch will be in an episode of Agatha being redeemed in a fun.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah. I do. I didn’t like Multiverse of Madness. I didn’t think it was good movie, but I do think there was a finality there in terms of what happens with the Scarlet Witch obviously, I’ve seen superhero movies before. Obviously, we’ve been reading comics for decades at this point. So I know there’s a billion ways of bringing her back. But I like the finality. I like the idea of letting characters and I don’t need to see Ironman again. He had a good ending at Avengers Endgame. I don’t necessarily need to see Captain America again. Same sort of thing. Like he had it an ending there. So like, I know that’s not the point of the comics. I know that’s antithetical to comics and superhero storytelling. But as a movie goer, and TV watcher in particular, I like finality I like ending because these are real human people that actually do get older. I don’t think we’re gonna have that here, though.

Justin Tyler
Well, but I also think like movies are, are finite. Storytelling. objects, like comic books and TV are about being on ending and episodic and always like, pulling you in for the next one. But movies aren’t like that, like movies are specifically about like, this is the end. And if you want to see another one, we’re going to make a sequel, but it’s going to be different and you have to pay again. So I agree with you. I think it’s harder to make like, well, now they’re back. Now they’re back. You can’t pull that trick over and over again, or else it starts to get a little like not interesting.

Alexander Zalben
I do like your idea to bring Scarlet Witch back as part of Agatha: Coven of Chaos. That’s a way that it doesn’t feel like we need to give her this whole emotional arc and bring finality to her story or anything. Just bring her in for a bit and that’s a good way of doing it because Elizabeth Olsen funny actress.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, and I also think that’s how they should touch on all the characters you mentioned like Captain America I think I don’t know if we want to see you. Maybe we see him in a flashback or we see him in like a vision or a dream or like anything like that. That’s a great way to keep their power is in the Marvel Universe moving forward because those characters inspire all of the current quote unquote Avengers that and heroes that we’re seeing, like, directly like the current Captain America is directly inspired by Steve Rogers, like iron heart is a direct descendant of Iron Man like it’s all right there. So like we can see them but I don’t think we want to inject them. Into the story as a main character again.

Alexander Zalben
Let’s move on to talk about a new character. This very mysterious character. Steven Yeun was also touring around for some new stuff I believe this is Beef, which is coming to Netflix that also was premiering at South by Southwest but he talked to Empire a little bit about his role in Thunderbolts all he said is I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list in terms of joining the MCU it was more of the story getting to work with Jake Schreier, again, who directed Beef and what his intentions were the intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play. Were very clear. And that’s what drew me to the film. Now I’ll just say this is probably Steven Yeun, this training on Walking Dead saying lots of things without actually saying anything coming through here which set him up very well for Marvel. But given these very vague comments, what do you think? What do you take away from Steven Yeun on Thunderbolts?

Justin Tyler
I mean, you’re right he he’s more like he’s very savvy about talking about it, but not talking about it. And I’m trying to figure out what character you could be talking about, like what do you what is that? Is it a it’s a villain is it like

Alexander Zalben
I, everybody keeps trying to be like, is he The Sentry in the Thunderbolts? Is he some other Marvel character they keep trying to game that out? I feel like he’s a guy? Probably is my guess? Like he’s an agent to Damage Control or whatever agency Thunderbolts and Valentina are working with. Maybe he’s working against them in some way. I’d love to see him in some sort of main role, but I get the sense now that people just kind of want to do Marvel movies. Basically, it’s all on William Jackson Harper in Quantumania, where he came in and I was like, oh, that’s that’s not a guy we’re gonna see again. All right. I really like him as an actor. He’s funny, but clearly, it’s like, cool Marvel paycheck. Let’s do this. So maybe it’s the same thing with Stephen Yeun. Though there has been talk about it potentially being a role that goes forward. I guess this is a roundabout way of saying that when they said– when he said this and when he said this quote, by my mind, they went to Martin Freeman in the Black Panther movies, and it feels like he could inhabit the same sort of role.

Justin Tyler
Interesting. I mean, like, The Sentry is a interesting character, but on top in a big movie with a ton of characters that need some explaining reign. Re-introduction to in the Thunderbolts movie to explain The Sentry is crazy, which is like a hero that was alive who has an internal alter ego that is also his arch enemy, who is like sort of losing his mind all the time, but also not and a great hero, but also his own villain, like it’s just like, it’s chaotic to have to do that. I see some other rumors here about him playing Amadeus Cho. That feels very strange and also feels like look an Asian character. Yeah, that’s being played by so that feels like–

Alexander Zalben
I don’t like that.

Justin Tyler
No, I agree. That feels like just bad thinking from the rumor mill trying to put that together. Because there’s, it’s not like you have to hire Steven Yeun video and to play an Asian character from the comics. It can be any character like Sentry–

Alexander Zalben
And Steven Yeun is– If people that have only seen him on Walking Dead or something like that? He’s phenomenal. He’s so good. Oh, my God.

Justin Tyler
Nope.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah. If you haven’t seen Nope, he has this monologue where he talks about an SNL sketch that is one of the best pieces of acting in the year. Also, just because we’re talking about it. I’ve seen the first five episodes Beef which is coming to Netflix. It’s him versus Ali Wong. Basically they have like a road rage incident, and it spins wildly out of control from there. And it just sort of the two of them in a actually very dramatic but sort of comedic way. It’s an A24 shows to give you the idea of like, yeah, doing some very dark stuff to each other. But he’s so good and so different than that as well. To shoebox him like we’re saying, like, Asian man Asian role is it’s racist, so maybe don’t do that.

Justin Tyler
100% I was surprised by so many people and articles written about it. I’m like, What are they doing?

Alexander Zalben
Yeah. So I don’t know. I could see him in some sort of generic agent role. I could see I don’t know if there’s any like classic Thunderbolts characters. Obviously. We’ve already had Baron Zemo. I think that’s where my mind would go immediately because I’d want them in a big role. Yeah, it also doesn’t seem like they’re doing classic comic book Thunderbolts. So I’m not sure what, whatever it is, I will say I was a little iffy about the Thunderbolts comment. The whole idea of the movie, I’m not quite sure how it was gonna come together. There’s a lot of characters with very similar powers on it. But hearing Steven Yeun say the intentions are clear and him being into it. He’s a dude who knows how to choose projects very wisely. So yeah, that made me a little more excited about Thunderbolts personally.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, and like the idea of a comic book movie coming at it from like, These people aren’t shining bright superheroes is really interesting undercutting the whole thing. Not in a the boys way where it’s purposefully they’re straight up evil. They have good intentions, but they’re sort of bad at it. He’s really interesting and has a ton of comedic possibilities. So like, and sort of Bad News Bears style superhero team that just can’t get it together until they maybe do at the end. A lot of fun opportunity there. So I’m looking forward to it especially with Steven Yeun involved.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, next up, there was a synopsis released for X-Men ’97 the animated series that has taken a very long time to get here again, something we will be talking about in a moment. This is via Collider, Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier, Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all. My reaction is that tracks.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, well also, it’s like you love the X-Men. Well, here’s a complicated version of it. feels sort of weird to me, but also setting like X-Men ’97 I don’t know. It’s so esoteric. It’s so specific. who this is for like literally us, right?

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, I think so. I mean, listen, animation and this is not to slag off animation because I love animation, but animation has a smaller audience than live action. It just does. You know, you look at the amount of people that were specifically talking about MCU watched what if versus this other thing. So generally, I’m against playing for the crowd, you know, but that’s absolutely what this is. They know who’s gonna watch this. They’re playing it for them. Those folks are the people that are gonna get this deep X-Men continuity and be like ooh, Mr. Sinister come in. Okay, cool. Oh, this is Magneto in the Jim Lee uniform. All right. Let’s go let’s do this. I get all this stuff. So it’s fine.

Justin Tyler
But I’m curious like what’s the tone of this? Because to set something in 1997 like are we commenting on that is it is it actually set 97? Or is it like, just taking the vibe of that and moving it forward? Like, what are we going to do here? Because it could be like the super joke heavy. Like, ha This is ridiculous, almost like, it can’t be even like a Batman 66 But X-Men 97 Or it’s gonna be pretty straightforward. It’s just like, No, this is the sort of the type of X-Men that were starting in and just moving forward.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, I don’t know. I think I mean, they’re bringing back most of the original cast from X-Men The Animated Series, so I assume just totally they’re going to try to continue that as much as possible. So if you liked X-Men in the animated series, which an entire generation of superhero fans did, you’re probably gonna get more of that. I am always of the opinion, I’d love to see things, you know, twist and change and be tweaked a little bit and really challenge you. But, and this is not to be dismissive again, but I don’t think this is going to be a challenging show. This is going to be more X-Men The Animated Series, and that’s pretty much it.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, do we get to get Morph dying in the first episode?

Alexander Zalben
Oh, God, I hope so. Yeah, every episode Wolverine strokes a picture just like he doesn’t in the meme. And the other thing that’s interesting about setting it in 1997 is you’re not going to get any references to The Matrix because that hasn’t come out yet. You’re not going to get into references to Fight Club or anything like that. Those are all 99. So if they eventually get there, they can drop those refs.

Justin Tyler
That’s a great and specific point, maybe that a lot of the storyline will revolve around the production of Fight Club leading up to its eventual release.

Alexander Zalben
Oh, God, I hope so. All right. Speaking of production, this is even vaguer than Steven Yeun’s quotes. a Marvel movie will shoot in DC later this year. This was revealed by DCist.com, believe there was a speech by a senator that dropped this Marvel movie do is really steal our thunder here.

Justin Tyler
It’s very funny to hear a Marvel movie with shoot in DC it makes it sound like on a Batman set.

Alexander Zalben
I was so confused when I saw this headline. I was like shoot a DC what is going on here but yeah, what do you think? I mean, I think there’s some pretty obvious guesses in terms of what it could be but what’s your best guess for what’s going to shoot in DC later this year?

Justin Tyler
I mean, I gotta think we’re seeing some Captain American New World Order coming from from this. I think Thunderbolts was probably is not necessarily set in DC and probably specifically not wow, if you’re shooting on location. It’s probably a big splashy movie like cap. The articles I mentioned Armor Wars, the sort of the project that can’t really figure itself out. It seems like there was a series and then it was a movie and now I haven’t heard that much about it in the meantime.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, I think it’s definitely Captain America and this is potentially mildly getting into spoilers here. But apparently in the movie Harrison Ford, who was taken over as Thunderbolt Ross is now President of the United States in the movie? Captain America New World Order. He used to be the Captain America. He’s probably clashing with the US government in some way. Makes a lot of sense to set it in DC. So there you go. Head on down, check out the cherry blossoms and check out Sam Wilson beating the shit out of Harrison Ford. Here’s one– This isn’t even necessarily a news item. But I continue to be struck by this and I was curious to talk through this thing. But the every month we get the do on lists at work. They’re the things that are like Here’s what’s coming up on Netflix. Here’s what’s coming up on Hulu. Here’s what’s coming up on Disney plus. And once again, other than you get Marvel’s Devil– Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and there’s one other thing that I’m forgetting about but there is no new Marvel show or movie that is coming out in Disney plus in April. And in fact the last time we saw a new MCU show and I’m not talking about the behind the scenes documentaries or clip shows or anything like that was the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on November 24. So we know that they’re pulling back on stuff, but I gotta say this feels like a lot of pulling back at this point.

Justin Tyler
Well, yes, I agree. But I also think we were at a peak sort of Marvel glut. A few last year, mid mid last year and not to say that glut is necessarily a bad thing I love bring get it in my body. I love it. But I do think their announcement of like hey, we’re gonna pull back came when they’d already made that decision months. Like they said we’re pulling back in the middle of the pullback. So yeah, it feels like and I think the pullback will continue at its current pace. So I think we’re gonna this is now the new pace we’re getting we’re we’re not going to have Marvel stuff for you know, two three month blocks at a time.

Alexander Zalben
Well, but this is getting back to what exactly what we’re talking about with Coven of Chaos and this Mephisto special… At this point. They have stuff piling up. Like yes I understand we’re taking a break we’re gonna space stuff out, maybe they’re preparing for COVID-19 Part Two or something like that where they’re gonna have to shut down again but they’ve got Echo pretty much done right they’re just starting to shoot Daredevil Born Again they’ve been shooting Agatha Coven of Chaos. They’ve got Secret Invasion has been sitting there for months at this point, just ready to go or pretty much ready to go as far as we know. Plus, everything Ironheart as well. I’m sure there’s a bunch of other things we’re forgetting. So how does that space out then? Are they still are they actually going to pull back to like, Oh, we’re just gonna do two shows a year and Echo which we shot 13 years ago is going to come out 13 years after that, or how does this work?

Justin Tyler
Well, I think it’s more because it’s not about like withholding it from us. I think it’s like, Hey, wait,

Alexander Zalben
No, they’re witholding it from us. Give me!

Justin Tyler
But I do think that’s how it feels. And it’s worse. Like why are you holding on to this when you could just release it but they they’re working on them all more, I think is the idea. They’re like, Okay, wait, how does this all fit together? Do we need to rewrite a reshoot any of this so that it’s better because we started to have a problem where the quality isn’t high enough to meet the mark where people want to go see your Quantumanias. So, like, it’s not about them, just sitting it on a shelf and being like, we’ll release it when we’re good and ready. I think they’re really trying to look at the picture, fix some stuff and move forward more deliberately because competition is getting more intense. With James Gunn, taking over DC and they’ve seen some legit and surely terrifying box office hits when it comes to Quantumania.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, I think that’s absolutely accurate. And I do my– my most hopeful thing, which is probably very naive. There’s been so much talk about the VFX and actual reporting on it in terms of the VX effects artists complaining talking about Marvel is changing things last second. That’s bad press. It’s the first real bad press that Marvel has gotten in over a decade at this point. So again, this is very naive because I feel like the actual Hollywood way is like Oh, that’s really bad for the VFX artists Well anyway, moving on, but my hope would be exactly what you’re saying that that’s one of the things they’re working on. Like make sure we can give these VFX artists times to make this stuff actually not look like shit because it’s affecting the fan base. It’s affecting the critical reaction. It’s affecting everything.

Justin Tyler
Well, unlike Hollywood at all, like sort of production doesn’t run on like we have to make sure everyone feels good at the end of the day. It runs on Is everyone having the time and resources they need to do their jobs. So the product looks how it feels how it’s supposed to. So like, I agree with you, they don’t care how all the VFX artists are feeling at the end of their 18 hour shift. But when the product doesn’t look as good as it needs to, that’s when like, oh, okay, it seems like they really need us to take a second and make this look good because bad work is bad and it shows up the whole thing’s production. Is everyone has to be doing a good job. If your sound guy is not doing a good job, the movie is bad. And that’s top to bottom everything including obviously VFX.

Alexander Zalben
So last thing I’ll say about this and then we’ll move on to our last news item here. When do you think we’re actually going to get the do next Disney plus show?

Justin Tyler
I mean, it feels like we’re headed for Secret Invasion next is that you think that’s wrong?

Alexander Zalben
It’s either Secret Invasion or Loki Season Two. And my feeling is probably Loki season two, maybe May but more likely June, to give Guardians of the Galaxy space would be my guess?

Justin Tyler
Interesting because like it feels like Loki– Loki hasn’t been on the shelf at all and I know that’s their sort of biggest win probably. But the Secret Invasion is supposed to be good and not and I think we need that flavor more than we need Loki right now I think we need a new exciting thing as opposed to like, here’s another sequel that we’ve already teased and you already sort of know what’s going to happen and it’s more Kang, someone who you’re going to have a long relationship.

Alexander Zalben
We’ve got to get back to it exactly what we’re saying like that’s playing it safe, right? One of the only positive things that everybody agreed on with Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania was the second post credit scene focusing on Loki was good and exciting. So to build directly on that and draw that line there. That’s hopefully if it’s good, even though they’ve changed a lot of behind the scenes staff at Loki sees it too. If it’s good, that is a win for them. That’s like okay, we can relax for a second.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, that’s fair and they need a win but I gotta think Secret Invasion has to come right on the heels of yes Loki.

Alexander Zalben
We’ll see if maybe we’re gonna get that Mephisto special first. Last but not least, this was an interesting thing that happened I probably not interesting for the people involved but it for those of you don’t know there’s a Marvel Studios spoiler Reddit that puts up sometimes their spoilers like big spoiler guys, here’s a new poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, but also they post a lot of stuff from people who are leakers. They’re very careful actually about hey, this is a rumor. This is the level of trustworthy this particular rumor monger is so they’re very good about it like it was a good Reddit all told for Reddit. But somebody well you know sometimes the garbage the somebody put up I believe 60 pages of a transcript of Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, including audio files a month before the movie came out. Marvel and Disney got wind of that they’re suing Reddit, suing Google they wanted them to reveal the name of the person. The Marvel Studios Spoilers Reddit has temporarily not shut down but gone private in response to that until they learn how to deal with this. So lots of stuff going on there. What do you think about this? Do you think this is? Well go ahead, Justin.

Justin Tyler
Well, I think the the rumor rumor mills and like secrets for Marvel movies in any project. It’s good for the movies, mostly, like even if there are an actual leak. It still builds buzz it’s still getting us somewhere and it’s like, oh my god, what if Sacha Baron Cohen is playing the Mephisto. Oh my God he is. Okay. Oh, well. I knew that first like it’s good fan bait. But when it crosses over into materials being leaked, like audio, that’s where they’re like, hey, no, no, you can’t do that. That’s our product that you’re teasing out and that could de incentivize people from going to see the actual movie because like, I’ve already heard it, so I don’t need to see it. And that’s where they’re when the money gets hit. That’s where they’re going to come in. So it’s a it’s a strong pendulum swing between these two things, and they just crossed the line.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, totally agree with that. And I think Marvel Studios Spoilers Reddit, again, is dealing with it correctly by going private tried to deal with it. I hope they don’t I don’t know. I feel very conflicted about releasing the person’s name because that’s a level of letting Marvel and Disney go into this stuff.

Justin Tyler
Punish someone? Well and also getting your hands on audio like that. That’s like, that would be that’s someone like who has access to the cut of the movie and it’s like, you know, I don’t know who that would be like an assistant editor or someone who’s like, I’m just gonna sneak this out. It’s, it is someone who is like damaging their product. So that’s why they want to know but I gotta think they’ll scold the Reddit and then just be like, okay, don’t post stuff. Post your rumors don’t post stuff.

Alexander Zalben
Well I think on the flip side of that, I do think there’s something to be said for this whole spoiler culture, encouraging people who are even involved in a production to push this stuff out there and that’s bad. That’s being bad at your job. You shouldn’t be doing that stuff. There is a difference. To get back to something you were talking about earlier. In the podcast, between reporters from a legitimate outlet talking to people about VFX, making sure their identities are perfect– protected, vetting it, checking everything, talking to an editor and crafting a piece versus somebody being like, I’m pissed off about what’s going on with my job. I gotta post 60 pages of the script or 60 minutes of audio, or whatever it’s going to be. It’s hard for some people to make that division in their mind Yeah, but, you know, they really gotta just be professional at your job.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, that’s true, just like how we are professional at our podcasting.

Alexander Zalben

Alexander Zalben
Absolutely. He’s gonna take that marriage.

Alexander Zalben
Welcome to MarvelVision, a podcast about Marvel, the MCU and right now a bunch of news. I’m Alex.

Justin Tyler
I’m Justin. Isn’t Marvel news really just news to us?

Alexander Zalben
I think? I every morning I open up the old Gray Lady, aka…

Justin Tyler
Aunt May?

Alexander Zalben
Oh God, I gotta think it’s an old lady’s in Marvel. But thank you, Justin. I appreciate it. Anyway, we’re gonna be talking about a bunch of news topics here in the interim. Between when Marvel TV shows and movies come out lots of stuff always popping. We can chat about it. We’re gonna try to do more of these hopefully going forward if you like them.

Justin Tyler
We want to be your primary news source. We’ll cover mostly Marvel and a little bit of weather at the end.

Alexander Zalben
Exactly. And then I’m going to just throw it like one sharp hot political take somewhere in here but you’ll see if you pick up on it.

Justin Tyler
you see if you can spot it. Yeah, it’s gonna be hard to pick up.

Alexander Zalben
Let’s start with one of the big things that broke this week. This hasn’t been officially confirmed by Marvel, but as usual, it’s probably officially confirmed anyway. John Bernthal thaw is returning as The Punisher in Daredevil” Born A gain. Reportedly, I believe he’s gonna be in for as much as six episodes of the show, which is a big deal. There’s a lot of other stuff to talk about here in the show that we’ll get into a moment but I wanted to stop here. What do you think about this? What do you think about Jon Bernthal coming back?

Justin Tyler
I mean, first off love Jon Bernthal. Great actor I– We Own The City did you watch that on HBO was so good

Alexander Zalben
I heard that was really good.

Justin Tyler
And to see him back in the Punisher. He’s playing this sort of similarly orbiting characters over and over again, but like, I like him, I think he’s a great Punisher. It does. Two things come to mind. First off, of course, they had 18 episodes. They gotta cram in everything they got time to spare. No wonder there’s gonna be a Punisher nine part arc, but secondarily Disney+, not really a gun place. Punisher famously gun focused.

Alexander Zalben
I do wonder and this would be pretty exciting. If we’re really firmly putting the Punisher in the MCU every time he kills somebody if he says so that just happened. That’d be pretty good, right?

Justin Tyler
Like oh, put it on full like Disney Channel, kids show style. Yeah. Booyooyoung

Alexander Zalben
Punisher just like Kingpins right behind me right now, isn’t he?

Justin Tyler
Wowee wow wow.

Alexander Zalben
There’s a couple of things to address with that one when they added all of the Netflix shows on Disney Plus, they also added a whole PIN system parental discretion gave the gave it a Mature rating. Internationally. It also doesn’t matter. They have Star on there versus Hulu. And there’s all sorts of content that you wouldn’t necessarily describe as Disney content. So if they’re going for the international play, which frankly we’re gonna probably talk about later in this podcast when it comes to movies is the play that Disney is going for anyway. It matters more domestically than it does internationally. And–

Justin Tyler
Yeah.

Alexander Zalben
–while I don’t think it’s going to be as wildly violent, or I don’t know, there are a couple of I gotta back off what what I’m saying. There were a couple of very intense moments of violence in the Netflix shows, but they’re not the most violent shows seen in the world. They’re just violent for Marvel shows, right?

Justin Tyler
Yeah, I think so. But I still do think the Netflix shows are further across the line than what Disney would normally put on Disney Plus. So I think while I agree with you there is still online that they’re going to need to I imagine pull back a little bit from.

Alexander Zalben
But this gets into and I think we’re getting far afield here, but we talk about this all the time on Comic Book Club our live show and The Stack our review podcast, where the Punisher is sometimes an odd fit in the Marvel universe like it his own books he’s getting to do exactly what you’re saying he’s getting to be as violent as he deeds he’s getting to push forward, but then you pair it with superheroes or like now Punisher don’t kill and he’s like, I’m gonna kill and they’re like, don’t kill and then maybe he kills one guy or is like gets pulled back from killing The Vulture because you need The Vulture in other stories or whatever. So I do wonder if we’re going to have that. Even if Jon Bernthal as an actor is gonna give 1,000% If we’re gonna get 50% of that Punisher in the show to your point.

Justin Tyler
Well, I also think the debate about the Punisher always goes to he’s the guy that kills and I feel like the character was created to sort of occupy that middle ground of vigilante that goes too far so that he is technically fighting villains, but he’s trying to hurt them, kill them, whatever. And so heroes have to pull back on another hero. Interesting like take in a gray area for comic books when before there was that gray area, but then he fast forward that to now there are a ton of ways to do this without it being like him just sniping people from a distance. Like we don’t need to do that. It could just be like, he gets too violent. He goes too far his tactics are wrong. And they could have because Daredevil– The problem is Daredevil is pushing that too. So those two characters are occupying sort of a similar vigilante thing like they’re on the edge they could go over the edge any moment. So like, how do you differentiate the Punisher that’s why it lands on like, well, he straight up kills people.

Alexander Zalben
Right and that’s where you get that great. One of the best things on the Daredevil show in season two, the first half that they write out of the comics for Punisher has Daredevil chained to the chimney it gives him the whole we’re one bad day different from each other speech. That’s great. That gets to the heart of it. I will say I am very tired of the whole should vigilantes kill, we have run it out. I’m cautiously hopeful they’re gonna hit it in a different way. I’m cautiously hopeful they’re gonna use the Punisher a different way. Like I mentioned with 1,000% of like you mentioned with John Bernthal . It’s kind of a no brainer to bring it back. Right. Like he is your hot actor right now. He does a phenomenal–

Justin Tyler
In more ways than one, Alex.

Alexander Zalben
Hubba, hubba. Have you seen American Gigolo, awooga awooga. He also loves the Punisher like we know this without calling any names but we have a friend who works with him or worked with him on the Punisher. And he like is obsessed with comics and thinks about it and wants to get it right for the fans and thinks about what the right thing is. So if you’re gonna bring somebody back and you’re gonna put the Punisher there, it makes total sense to have John Bernthal in there. On the other hand–

Justin Tyler
Yeah, when you have 18 episodes it’s a ton of real estate. Especially what we’re going to talk about later may be about the Marvel maybe pulling back a little bit. The fact that this show snuck in an 18 episode order, is wild. I t’s gonna feel like so much bigger.

Alexander Zalben
I’m still suspicious of that. To be honest, this is based on no information whatsoever. But my guess here is they’re doing essentially what Netflix does with animation, which is, they’re like great news. We picked you up for 18 episodes for this season, so that we can pay you with one contract. Oh, by the way, we’re gonna release this in three parts of six episodes each over the course of two years. And essentially sell them as three seasons. So I–

Justin Tyler
Sort of your Gabby’s dollhouse model.

Alexander Zalben
Exactly. That’s how they talked about it in the room, I’m sure.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, definitely. That’s how I see it.

Alexander Zalben
They’re not gonna do 18 weeks of Daredevil. That doesn’t make any sense. They’re gonna break it up in different parts. I’m sure.

Justin Tyler
You could do it Andor style you do nine and nine Andor 12 and is working on this back 12. And that’s perfectly exciting and fun.

Alexander Zalben
Exactly. On the other hand, and I guess it’s too bad that our primary defender of these two characters Pete is not on this episode of the podcast, but also dropped to this Hollywood Reporter article where they might have explained the John Bernthal was coming back the casually mentioned that most likely Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson will not be back as Karen and Foggy respectively. They didn’t say that definitively, but they believe they are not going to be back. What do you think about this?

Justin Tyler
Well, it makes a lot of sense. If we are sticking with this Daredevil-She Hulk love thing like having Karen Page in there feels weird. And Foggy’s future is looking foggy. I would say

Alexander Zalben
I’m gonna be straight up rude. They seem like very nice people. They were the vestigial limb of that show. They were. Constantly they’d be like, Daredevil would be in these really intense situations that they’d cut over to them but they– Karen would be like, I’m really trying to make it as a newspaper person, but I’m not gonna write any articles or I’m gonna work out one article they’re like, please turn in some articles and she’s like, Nope, I’m working on this one article and that’s it. And then Elden would come in– Foggy would come in and be like make a joke about avocados and he always seemed very– Pete’s gonna listen to this and he’s gonna scream at me — but he always seemed so uncomfortable in that role, like it just not fit for him. I don’t mind Foggy as a character as a foil to Daredevil, but there was nothing there.

Justin Tyler
Well, I think they, they it sort of became like a workplace comedy energy and the show just wasn’t interested in that. And like modern TV doesn’t really mix workplace comedy with drama in the way that the superhero show is gonna want to. So it that makes total sense, like and if we follow the Karen Page arc from the comics, that’s horrifying, and I feel like either they have to do that or not.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, the only one qualm that I have even though Daredevil completely the show completely misused them. When they brought Karen over to The Punisher which mind you I always forget about this. The first season of The Punisher was great, like legitimately a great show. Second season, not so much. But the chemistry between Deborah Ann Woll and John Bernthal… A million times better than the chemistry retreat Deborah Ann Woll and Charlie Cox so not getting to see that again is a little bit of a bummer but it’s okay we have the other episodes in our past and I think we’re gonna be all good. There is another recast though that set off a lot of rumors that I think are entirely unnecessary. So Sandrine Holt, who I believe she was on Better Call Saul, if I remember correctly has been cast as Vanessa Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again, Ayelet Zurer played her on the Netflix show. You’re gonna

Justin Tyler
I have Sandrine on House of Cards, Mr. Robot and Homeland.

Alexander Zalben
Okay, there we go. Well, she’s also going to be working with this actually, it was also buried at a THR article that was about Michael Cuesta, who’s previously directed on Dexter and Homeland is going to be directing episodes of the show. This set off a lot of speculation about — opp, this is a different universe they got a different Vanessa Fisk it’s all that connected to the previous show. That’s ridiculous.

Justin Tyler
That’s ridiculous. But you’re right. She’s also on Better Call Saul playing Cheryl Hamlin, which I thought that was great. But yes, I think that is crazy. That’s a recasting does that mean we shifted the show to another universe?

Alexander Zalben
Well, that’s if you look back at it. Iron Man and Iron Man 2 are two entirely different universes because there’s different Rhodeys.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, that’s 100%. Right. Yeah. Just think of how we’d be living if we were in the Iron Man or a rich universe. Yes.

Alexander Zalben
So I think that’s kind of a ridiculous rumor. Yes, they’re gonna recast people. I’m still of the opinion. And I’ve said this several times here on the podcast that it’s going to be like a soft reboot where they’re not going to conflict necessarily anything that happened before, but they’re also not going to reference it like nobody’s going to be like Hey, weren’t you avocados at law and Matt is gonna be like, I don’t know what you’re talking about. That’s crazy.

Justin Tyler
I agree. They won’t do that specific thing, but it’s also strange because it does feel like with the Punisher being in there, they’re gonna hit a lot of the same beats, at least like from a character point of view. So it’s like, what are you going to be doing again? And if you’re doing things, similar things, it’s going to be hard to not reference what happened before.

Alexander Zalben
Right or reshoot. I mean, it’s a classic going back to the origin thing, so they’re not gonna use footage from the Netflix shows. I don’t think but they’re gonna reshoot it in a different way or work in a different way. So yeah, I don’t know. On the other hand, there are a lot of stories about Daredevil. And they’re all different. And they all reference the same events, but hit it a different way. So, we’ll see.

Justin Tyler
And what do you think about the Echo show? How does that fit in here? Because that’s been pushed back, right?

Alexander Zalben
I mean, that gets into the next topic, we’re going to talk about a little bit but maybe it works in some way and maybe they’re gonna have to reshoot things because apparently that’s been pushed back at the very least until 2024. So. It was clearly supposed to come first. It was supposed to come pretty soon after Hawkeye but whether you believe that there are a lot of problems in actually getting the show together, or if they’re just shifted around the order, whatever it is, this is sort of classic, classic Marvel where they’re like, oop, we move this thing around. Now we’re gonna have to change things and tweak things and change the end credit scenes and figure it out. The last thing I wanted to say before we move on to our next topic, though, is that the show is starting to shoot in New York. This coming week for a very long time. So we’ll probably go to set right? We’ll hang out?

Justin Tyler
Yeah. 100% will be there. We’re New Yorkers so we’re walking through movies all the time.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, there’ll be look forward to our big scene where we say, Hey, I’m walking here as we walk through the show.

Justin Tyler
Got to have that to New York, New York shoot.

Alexander Zalben
As you referenced. This was another big topic that came out this week. I know we were all very excited for the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, one of the biggest entertainment events of the year.

Justin Tyler
I was– I camped out outside, it was sick dude. Yeah, it was awesome.

Alexander Zalben
I really want to do that sometimes dressed in costume as my favorite Morgan Stanley exec.

Justin Tyler
Yeah. Which is just work clothes for a lot of people. Yeah, I crowd surfed in for a lot of it. Don’t take the brown acid, but I did anyway.

Alexander Zalben
So Bob Iger who is now again and temporarily, again, in charge of Disney gave some statements about a lot of different things at this conference. But the big one for us is he talked about Marvel movies and I’m just going to read off his quotes, which were shared by CNBC: “Sequels typically worked well for us. Do you need a third and fourth, for instance? Or is it time to turn to other characters? There’s nothing in any way inherently off in terms of the Marvel brand. I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we’re mining. And you look at the trajectory of Marvel over the next five years, you’ll see a lot of newness. We’re going to turn back to the Avengers franchise but with a whole different set of Avengers.” So how does this strike you? There’s a lot of stuff to take away here from this, but what are your big takeaways, Justin?

Justin Tyler
I mean, I feel like I get why he’s saying. There’s nothing wrong. Nothing wrong here. Nothing wrong here. That’s a classic thing to say. And I don’t think there’s inherently like a bunch of detrimental problems that are going to really ruin everything. I just think they need to take some more time to make the stuff that’s important to them and by transitive property us desperately important to us. And that’s when I feel like statements like oh, we just need to look at the stories we’re mining. It’s like now it’s not about the stories or the characters. It’s about your choices when you make them.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, that’s… I don’t know I don’t want to like pick it apart piece by piece but it’s a weird statement coming from a guy who immediately, his first call after he took over at CEO again, is like Hey, real quick. We’re gonna lay off 7000 people but good news. We’re doing Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5. And then here, he’s like, I don’t know if we need a Thor 3 at a Thor 4 Captain America 3 or a Captain America 4 all of these different things. They seem like contradictory statements on the surface. I do understand the essence of what he’s talking about. But I think what he’s actually bouncing around is the recent slate of Marvel movies have not performed in the way that they want them to. So like you’re saying it’s not about changing up the characters. It is about making sure the stories are good, and you’re telling them for a reason versus just greenlighting sequels nonstop, right?

Justin Tyler
Well, I also think they they also don’t have access to a lot of their older characters anymore from a– from the story point of view from a contractual point of view. I think, so. Like I think a lot of– Buried in this statement is like hey, we’re doing more stuff, but it’s going to be a lot of stuff that you haven’t really seen before. Like, this is probably the last Guardians that was probably the last Ant-Man especially given how I think we’re gonna move into like, like the Fantastic Four, get edging toward X-Men like all this stuff is where it’s going. And there’s a lot of excitement to be had there. But he can’t say that yet. I don’t think.

Alexander Zalben
The– I also have two very conflicting feelings about this. One is… We’ve been raised on comic books. So of course I want to see these characters forever. You know, I want to see a Shang-Chi two, three, four, five you know, see his continuing adventures until Simu Liu is like, I physically can’t do this anymore. Please leave me alone. But on the other hand, every Marvel movie is a sequel to the previous Marvel movie, you know

Justin Tyler
That’s exactly right. Yeah.

Alexander Zalben
So they’re gonna keep going regardless, even if you don’t get Shang-Chi 56, Shang-Chi is still going to be in the movies some way even though Captain America is technically old or on the moon or dead or whatever’s going on with them. You can bring back Chris Evans at any point for anything and he could pop up in a movie and it would be like whoa, what’s going on here? Because it’s fine. So they have ways of working this stuff without selling it specifically on that title character while still telling the story they want to tell.

Justin Tyler
Well, it’s interesting to me like just one more thing on this like, from a story point of view, like they’re bringing back the Avengers is it going to be like in the comics where it’s like, here’s your card, you’re an Avenger now. Or is it going to be another like, Oops, we’re all fighting the same fight. Why don’t we work together because there’s a problem coming? Because it’s I think it’s hard to pull the same rabbit out of the hat that they did in the first couple of Phases, bringing together the Avengers. So what’s the move here?

Alexander Zalben
I think it’s probably going to be the latter, more Avengers is a capsule term for this is the movie where we bring everybody together and they’re all working together. Not necessarily as a formal team per se, though there might be teams. I mean, you could see like Sam Wilson, as the new Captain America bringing together a team. We’re getting the Thunderbolts so they’re gonna be a team so there’s–

Justin Tyler
They will have to be a team. But I just like if it’s fighting Kang then I guess it could be like, Hey, we’re all trapped in this pocket universe or how do it so we’re Avengers? Yeah, but it’s just like, you can’t go it’s part of what we all sort of grew into over the course of MCU is Tony Stark building the infrastructure of the Avengers. And I think that was a thing that we liked in watching the progression of the Avengers movies. And I don’t think they could do that again. So I’m curious how that–

Alexander Zalben
Well, but here’s the other thing is… We basically got one Avengers movie, right? Like the first Avengers movie is all about them putting together the team leading into that iconic spin around shot at the end. The second movie Age of Ultron is the one where they’re actually like, we’re the Avengers. We have a headquarters. We work together. We’ve done all of these missions that you haven’t seen that happened off screen, and we’re all gonna fight together and that’s great. And then in between that you have after that you have Civil War where they break apart and they’re no longer Avengers, and then Avengers Infinity War and Endgame are exactly what we’re saying. It’s these disparate elements all coming together to fight this threat in both of those movies. But they’re never really like, we’re a team in exactly the same way.

Justin Tyler
Well, but I think that what you just described, you need that, hey, let’s be a team. Let’s come together. Let’s be a team. We’re a team. Now we’re breaking apart because we had a disagreement, like that dramatic action, I think led to some of the best moments in the whole franchise. So like if it’s going to be like accidental bumped into meet cute Avengers. We need some infrastructure there to carry us through like the next five movies.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, you’re definitely right about that. Having a series of scenes where it’s all strangers getting themselves caught up to speed up what a multiverse is, is going to be potentially the most boring thing of all time.

Justin Tyler
Honestly, I’m ready for a Doctor Strange snap, like okay, you all know what the multiverse is when I just snap my fingers like, snap every couple of movies. Let’s get through the exposition.

Alexander Zalben
It’s definitely my big takeaway from the first couple of movies. Here’s another one. This is some exciting news. I thought. Marvel Studios is going to introduce original characters, characters not based on the comic books, aside from like S.H.I.E.L.D. characters, but actual superheroes and the first one they announced it apparently this is not going to be last is for What If? Season Two. It is a character called Kahhori who is the idea is that I’m definitely going to mispronounce several things in here, so I apologize. But this episode in Season two is going to ask what happens if the Tesseract fell to earth and landed in the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy before the colonization of America. This is from an article on Marvel by the way, so it’s the Tesseract takes on new life and a new mythology transforming a lake into a gateway to the stars leading Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman on a quest to discover her power. And one of the other neat things about this is they worked very heavily with the Mohawk Nation to make sure to craft this character, to craft this arc, to craft the world that she lives in. And I believe the episode is also going to be broadcast in Mohawk with subtitles, presumably. I think this is great. I’m very excited about this news

Justin Tyler
Agreed. This is awesome. I think it’s a great doing What If, new What If stories is a great way to do it with new characters, and lets us start to maybe take these characters and put them back into the comics, to bring them to the comics that is. And this particular story is really interesting to me. It feels a little bit like the the premise of Prey brought into a Marvel take which I think is a very cool

Alexander Zalben
Well that said I think they were developing… They’ve been working on What If? Season Two for a while. So yeah, I agree with you. I think we’re gonna see a lot of characters we know like it’s gonna be a classic Poochie situation without using that derogatorily where like she goes through the multiverse and sees a bunch of characters that were familiar with, bumps into Captain Carter, etc. But it’s neat. It’s exciting. I will say by last note on this as I originally saw the news, just being like new episode of What If is going to be what if the Tesseract fell to earth and landed in the sovereign nation Haudenosaunee Confederacy before the colonization of America? And I was like, wow, that’s a long title. But so it’s real though.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, it’s real, guys. It’s real. That’s what we button up every episode with. Guys: it’s real.

Alexander Zalben
Yes. A couple of quick other things to mention here this weekend as we’re taping the Oscars are coming up. Marvel is up for five Oscars all for Black Panther Wakanda Forever for Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Hair and Makeup and Best Supporting Actress as our Oscar prognosticator, Justin, what is your official take here that you’re willing to stake your reputation on? Take it away.

Justin Tyler
I think you got costume design is a big hit. They’ll get that. Visual effects. I feel like Avatar is gonna go for that one. Original song potentially? I think RRR Naatu, Naatu many. People are really rising for that. Hair and makeup. I think that could be a Marvel could take that. The big one though Best Supporting Actress. I mean. Her performances. Unbelievable. It’s a tough category and in the other award ceremonies that we’ve seen lately like the SAG Awards, the DGA awards, all the other sort of Guild Award shows. I don’t believe– it’s been a mixed bag about who’s won that so. It could be because it Jamie Lee Curtis is up here right and a couple other people so like — and Jamie Lee Curtis has won the DGA. I think she won the– so it’s like– it’s a it’s a mixed bag. But her performance is unbelievable and I think she could easily take it.

Alexander Zalben
I agree and my very callous calculated way of looking at this beyond the fact that she gave have a phenomenal performance is I think people might see it as a way of awarding or honoring Chadwick Boseman, at the same time, so… I don’t know just sort of to get into the head of the Oscar voter potentially. But it would be great like you said, because she deserves it because she tears up the screen every scene that she’s in.

Justin Tyler
So intense.

Alexander Zalben
–but it would also be the first acting win for Marvel which would be a big deal for them. So I guess we’ll see what happens. We mentioned earlier the Quantumania box office. We’re still in the middle of the weekend as we’re taping this we don’t know exactly how it’s going to do this weekend, but woof! Is I guess my take?

Justin Tyler
Yeah, not great. Not great for multiple reasons because it may not beat Ant-Man 2 for box office.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, depending on how you look at it. I broke out a couple of figures and I was looking like we’re talking about at the international box office. And global box office currently as of today is I believe $423 million. You’re looking for to break a billion on every single one of these superhero movies. It’s been tough since the pandemic and hasn’t necessarily happened as consistently. But you got to go back to like Eternals did 401 million total, Shang-hi did 432, Black Widow did 379. And those were like beginning pandemic movies. People were much more scared to go out into movie theaters. And then before that you got to go all the way back to Phase 1 to find something comparable when Cap 1 made 370 million global and Thor made 449 million global. So… This is not good. And I think to tie back into the earlier thing ties exactly to why Bob Iger was saying the things that he was saying.

Justin Tyler
Yeah, I mean, especially like you can say like it’s post pandemic all that but like Top Gun just blew, and Avatar just blew these numbers out of the water and we’re back to pre-pandemic levels. So it’s like, it is a big problem, especially when I’m sure they had their eyes on a billion global when they were making this movie and coming out with it. They painted as the next big move in Phase Five, the first movie in Phase Five. It’s got a bunch of implications for the movie. It’s a threequel for Ant-Man a franchise it was gaining strength over the course of its run. So it is bad. It is bad.

Alexander Zalben
Yeah, I don’t think we’re gonna see an Ant-Man 4 I gotta be honest with you.

Justin Tyler
Agree. I don’t think we will. But I think this is– Going back to Bob Iger’s statement. This is making Marvel look at their process at the same time you have DC looking at they’re changing up their whole thing. So it’s actually probably a good moment for them to restructure, think back, trim some stuff, put more time into writing the stories before you’re already making the dude with holes.

Alexander Zalben
Marvel made its best stuff when it was thinking like the underdog. Now it’s thinking like the winner and if we can get it back to a place where it is the underdog, they gotta fight a little harder and be a little scrappier. I just think they’re gonna be better for it to your point. Last thing I wanted to end with I am always very iffy about theories, but I thought there was a fun theory that I saw banging around the internet that I did like quite a bit. So if you remember in Ant-Man The Wasp: Quantumania, there’s a scene where Ant-Man after he’s been imprisoned, Kang comes up to him and doesn’t remember who Ant-Man as he’s like, didn’t Did I kill you?, Ant-Man’s very confused. And then he says, Are you the one with a hammer? And he’s like, No, that’s Thor. What are you talking about? So what people were pointing out is it’s pretty weird that Kang who is an observant guy who’s a conquerer who knows a lot of stuff, would be like, Are you the long blond haired fellow who’s very buff with the hammer? That doesn’t make any sense. But what might make sense is if it was Captain America from the end of Endgame, when Captain America is wearing essentially an Ant-Man suit, and holding Thor’s hammer, goes into the Quantum Realm to return the Infinity Stones. That potentially is the point when Kang found him. So I don’t know. You would have to split off the multiverse there because obviously Captain America was successful, he returned the Infinity Stones he got together with Peggy. But again, I thought that was a fun theory. I don’t know if they were thinking about that when they made the movie, but I liked it as a retcon explanation.

Justin Tyler
I think that’s really great. I would argue I would guess they were not thinking about that at all. I think they were making like a joke that seemed cool. For him to make. Didn’t I kill you? Did I kill you? Like it’s a nice fun, badass thing to say. But I also think to take it more seriously. You could see it as a real launching point into just like, the like there’s a multiverse where Ant-Man has the Thor’s hammer or where Iron Man who also looks a little bit like Ant-Man has Thor’s hammer or where, for instance, referencing the comics, Tony Stark is in the Ant-Man armor, and he somehow gets the hammer. So the multiverse anything can happen as we’re all going to learn over and over again for the next decade.
