CFSI Saltspring Radio was on the air from 2009 and 2015, when it was removed from the airwaves by the CRTC. It is much missed. The residents of Saltspring Island, BC are hoping to have radio again someday. In the meantime here are our memories.
An interesting 2011 interview from the CFSIfm Morning Magazine show with Chester Ludlow regarding solutions that ground electronic dross, long before the advent of 5g tech.
Juke Box Johnny DeVille was a mainstay at CFSI from the earliest days onward. He filled in for hosts often, and had great shows twice a week. He also did some of the hard work keeping the station on the air, and he constantly monitored our programming. This episode was his second time on the air!
CFSI Monday night's "The Speakesy" hosted by Matt & John was a big favorite with listeners. Now, some people might have heard them as a couple of deriding grousers, but not us. We thought they were kinda' funny. We sure miss Matt though. Matt & John are on the right of the photo, with their pal Rob Pingle of "Home Game" to the left. This episode was broadcast during our first year on the air.
Lisa Thomaides had a wonderful lifestyle show on CFSI called Engage Life. It was a big part of our busy Saturday Morning Magazine group of programs. On this episode she has a visit with her mom who had plenty to say about her stay on Saltspring Island.
Dave Phillips interviews local blues singer Auntie Kate about her family history on Saltspring Island and her Hawaiian roots. Her brother Dave Roland is on the controls.
A big cast of familiar characters join The Two Daves Blues Show. This show was done earlier in the day from last week's show with Beat & The Sneaks. Tom Bowler, Auntie Kate, Barry Edwards (with a Mexican lasagna lunch), Banana Joe (with the weather report), join many others on this lively blues show.
Chief Tom and The Fire Trustees Make their case for a new Saltspring Island Fire Hall 2013
The 'new' fire hall was a huge conversation on many CFSI shows the entire time it was on the air. These two conversations with Chief (at the time) Tom Bremner, and with the host of Politics Be Damned, Darlene Steele, lay the groundwork for many debates to come. This weekend we will feature many of those CFSI debates.
This CFSI radio play, "A Dinner Called Nellie" was written and performed by the students in the attached picture. This is one of five student radio plays that were aired over the Christmas season many times. This was a very proud moment for all of us at the station, especially super-volunteer Bobby Magee, who went to the school to produce, and coach, these young radio acolytes to get them on air.
Lots of local artists help Saltspring celebrate New Year's Eve in rockin' style...featuring Valdy at midnite!
We had a lot of fun covering special events at CFSI. Here is Captain Drew on the scene calling The Seacapers Build-A-Boat Race.
The Windsor Way Today was part of CFSI's Saturday Morning Lifestyle Magazine group of shows that also included: a psychic show, a first nations show, a lifestyle show with Lisa, and a cooking show. Windsor Plywood sponsored this weekly show, and Ken and Mike were big supporters of what we were doing. This episode about assembling your personal tool kit features many familiar local voices: Zip, Eric Jacobson, Bobby Magee, Belinda Schroeder, Dave Roland, Mike Cherry, Lannie Beveridge, Fred The Locksmith, Dave Phillips, Henry Baade, Kim Murray, and Dr D-Rail.
We did many on-location broadcasts at CFSI. Here we run into Henry Baade, one of the hosts of The History of Saltspring show, during a Canada Day Show 'n Shine. Henry did some great ad work for us, and is a well-known raconteur, as well as avid motorcycle collector.
Out With It, with hosts Dave Campbell and Ken Rouleau, was a weekly show on CFSI that featured current events as seen through what we might now call an alternative lens. They were ahead of their time in many ways. This clip is rare and has never been heard since the original broadcast.
Most shows were a bit rough at the beginning of CFSI, but not The Beanstalk hosted by Janine Fernandes. She is a gifted programmer who created a very polished, entertaining and informative show about dealing with parenting challenges in fun and fruitful ways.
There was no other show on CFSI that ruffled as many feathers as The Trouble Makers with Eric Booth, Drew Clarke and their sometimes radio compadre Paul Marcano. On this episode they do not disappoint with their feisty banter and contrarian dispositions. They field calls, and Rebecca Shannon Sharpe makes an appearance.
George Ehring brought an informative and enjoyable classical music show to the CFSI airwaves every week. George was a well-loved member of the community, a man of eloquence and sophistication by any measure...world class in all ways.
The CFSI Country Doctor Show was hosted by local medical hero Dr Ron Resnick. It wasn't a show about medical advice, but rather an intimate look into the lives of some of the very interesting residents of Saltspring Island. His guest this time around was the incredible Richard Moses, one of the founders of CFSI Fm, classical music host, and great supporter from the beginning to the end of the life of our first local radio station.
Stump The Chump at Bruce's Kitchen. This is a clip from a remote that the CFSI crew did at the Saturday market, where we were giving away Bob Masse posters if they could request a song that we couldn't find. Featuring: Heather Wilton, Dr D-Rail, Rebecca Shannon Sharpe and Chef Bruce Wood.
Maybe that craziest show ever on CFSI. Theodore Trout of The Fish Show joins Dave and Henry for some outrageous and wild conversation with Dave & Henry on The History of Saltspring Show. Dave Roland keeps a firm hand on the studio...when he can.
In the last two decades Jason has travelled to more than eighty countries on all six inhabited continents - and some places have inspired him to make return visits. "It's hard not to pick favourites," he comments, "but Turkey and Syria are very dear to me because of their warm-hearted people. I see that same kindness in the eyes of many people in the remote parts of Southeast Asia, and rarely have I witnessed such joie de vivre than among the Pacific Islanders of Polynesia." His love of travel extended beyond the printed work to launching a weekly radio show - 'Off The Beaten Track' - on local radio station CFSI 107.9 in Spring 2010, which quickly became an audience favourite.
This CFSI clip carries on from part 1 with Li Read, Host of All Things Saltspring. We hear ads including: the golf course restaurant with owner Jim doing the voice work, Dragonfly Art Supply with owners Esther and David's daughter singing their theme song, and an ad for Salt Spring Recycling with Dave Roland's son Jack making weird noises.
In this clip of Li Read's morning show you hear the first CFSI broadcast after changing hands of ownership. The local voices of Mike Cherry, George Ehring, Matt Steffich, Rasma Bertz, Harry Manx, Lannie Beveridge, Cathy Roland, Drew Clark, Dave Roland, Alan Moberg, The Two Daves, and of course Li Read!
