Inviting people into a relationship with Jesus

This week our teaching passage (Luke 6:20-38) captures a condensed version of Jesus’ most famous message - “The Sermon On the Mount.” And, admittedly it’s a hard passage to understand because much of the content is counterintuitive, and seemingly contradictory. But, God’s Word is always full of practical, relevant, life-giving truth. We just have to take the time to unpack it, and dig beneath the rocky surface to discover the treasure that awaits us.

Bible Text: Luke 4:1-13 | Speaker: Pastor Bob DuPar | Series: Gospel of Luke | This Sunday we’ll be studying Luke 6:12-19, as we discover God’s wisdom on Choosing Leaders. Our text is only eight short verses, but it’s packed full of practical insights and transferable principles that can help us as we attempt to appoint a support team, or assemble a trusted inner circle.

I encourage you to read our passage this week ahead of time, as well as how it’s recorded in the other gospels: Mark 3:7-19 & Matthew 5:1-2.

*Note that many theologians believe that Matthew 5:1-2 (the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount) records Luke 6:17-19 of our passage

This week our teaching passage will be Luke 5:27-6:11.  These verses record the continued resistance that Jesus encountered with the scribes and the Pharisees because of their expectations of how they believed that Jesus and His disciples should act.

Have you ever felt the pressure and burden of satisfying the expectations of those around you?  Then, this teaching text is for you!  Come discover the practical insight that our passage provides about Managing Expectations.

This week, Jesus continues to demonstrate his power and authority to heal and forgive sins.  He does things that only Yahweh God was capable of, or had the authority to do.  That’s why He gets into trouble with the religious leaders in our passage:  Luke 5:12-26.

Last week in our teaching passage, Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah (chapter 61) and stated His mission as the Messiah.  In our text this week (Luke 4:31-44) Jesus goes out and starts fulfilling the vision that He promised. And, He continues to demonstrate powerand authority, over unclean spirits as well as sickness and disease.  Jesus personifies the essence of the angel Gabriel’s message to Mary, “Nothing will be impossible for God!"

This week’s sermon (Luke 3:21-38) is without a doubt the hardest text that I’ve ever preached in over 30 years of ministry! Yes, that’s right! Because it contains a lengthy genealogy; and, when is the last time you heard a sermon based upon a genealogy? You don’t! Pastors routinely skip over these passages in their preaching. Very few commentators and theologians even attempt to comment on them. But, we’re going to wade through these murky waters this week because we believe in teaching ALL of God’s Word, not just the parts that are popular or that preach well.

And, lest you think that this means that the sermon will be like watching paint dry, or dying a slow agonizing death by torture, I have GREAT NEWS for you! God honors His Word! And, every passage of Scripture is there for a reason. Plus, the Holy Spirit uncovered some fascinating stuff for me this week in my sermon prep/study! And, I can’t wait to share it with you!

This week we begin a new series – but really we will continue to build on our IDENTITY in Christ.

As we study II Corinthians 5:12-21, we will examine what it means to be an Ambassador for Jesus, or as I call it: living “The Irrational Life!” Why does God use us to proclaim His message? Why does Jesus teach us to behave in a way that is anti-intuitive and against our basic human nature? What is my most important task in this life?

This Sunday we’ll be talking about what the Bible says about Confession and Repentance. Our passages will be 1 John 1:5-10 and Mark 1:9-15. I encourage you to spend some time in these texts this week in preparation for our time together.

Repentance literally means “a new way of thinking.” I’ve been a Christian now for 47 years; and, to say that my new understanding of repentance has been a game-changer for me is an understatement! I’m convinced that you’ll find this discovery to be both fascinating and extremely practical as well.

This Sunday we’ll be talking about our Kingdom Identity, our identity as Christ followers. Many of us, at one time or another in our lives, have lived in a false identity; and these false identities not only keep us from growing and maturing, but they also lack the power to sustain us.

Our passage this week will be Philippians 3:1-21. I encourage you to look at it ahead of time and observe the many ways in which the Apostle Paul used to derive his identity, in contrast with the new ways that He is being shaped.

This Sunday we'll be learning how to Hear From God as we look at 1 Samuel 3:1-21, in our second week of a new teaching series titled, "Identity."

In our last series on the Holy Spirit we discussed how we frequently have no problem believing that Satan is actively involved in speaking to, and influencing, people today, but we're often skeptical whether God interacts and intervenes. We acknowledge the presence of demonic communication in the world, but sometimes fail to give God credit for His activity and presence in everyday life.

This Sunday we launch our new teaching series on Identity, as we explore what the Kingdom of God is all about. The Kingdom of God/Heaven is not just future-oriented; it's also NOW. It's not about a place; it's about the reign and presence of Christ.

Most of us love to receive invitations: "Please join us... The honor of your presence is requested... Please reserve the following date... We'd like for you to be our guests at..."

As Christians, we're privileged to be able to extend the grandest invitation anyone will ever receive; but, why do we often shy away from this opportunity. I'd like to suggest it's because we fail to appreciate all of the little invitations along the way that make a big invitation easier to accept.

This Sunday we'll be finishing our teaching series on the Holy Spirit as we talk about the Spirit's role in leading and teaching us. We can always be assured that the Spirit will lead us and guide us according to the truth of God's Word.

This Sunday's sermon will be based on Romans 8:18-28. As followers of Christ we live between the tension of present struggles and suffering and the expectation and anticipation of future glory. And, I always work all things together for your good! So, trust Me!"

This week a CBC, we continue our study of Holy Spirit by considering the gifts he provides to each believer. What is the “common thread” of the spiritual gifts? Do I “bear fruit”?

This week, we return to our study of the Holy Spirit. Sunday, we will consider the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. What does it really mean to be "indwelt" by the Holy Spirit and how does the presence of Holy Spirit impact my life? Is the power of Holy Spirit evident in my life and in the life of the church?

Come join us this Sunday as we celebrate our nation’s independence, and explore what it means to be a part of God’s Kingdom and plan.

2,500 years ago, Ezra - under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit - penned these words in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

This promise was originally made to Israel; but, I believe that God extends this offer to any country or people group that will commit to honor and seek Him.

This Sunday we celebrate Father's Day as we recognize and honor our dads. And, despite whether or not you had a great father growing up, one that you admired and respected, it's comforting to know that we have a Heavenly Father who is perfect.

Psalm 68:5 declare that God is the Father of the fatherless. And, in John 14:18, when Jesus promised that He would not leave His disciples fatherless, once again this was fulfilled through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

This week we'll be starting a new teaching series called Frequency that will begin an extended study over the summer on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Some, like Francis Chan, have referred to the Holy Spirit as "The Forgotten God;" and, I would have to agree that this is often true for many Christians who are not of the charismatic tradition. So, over the next several weeks we'll be examining what Scripture says about this mysterious member of the Trinity.

This Sunday we finish-up our teaching series in James as we cover 5:13-20. And, the focus of our passage is upon prayer and healing. In fact, James mentions the word prayer (in all of its various forms) 7 times in just 8 short verses! I'm thinking that it's important!

You'll also notice that there are a lot of imperatives (commands) in our text, meaning that James is not merely making suggestions or trying to offer wise counsel.

Join us as we examine James 5:1-6. There are many encouraging passages in Scripture, and there are many challenging passages. This is the latter. We’ll examine what it means to store up treasures here on earth and the importance of using our wealth and power for His kingdoms, not our own.

This week we’ll be studying James 4:13-17 as we talk about the dangers of prosperity, presumption & pride. Plus, we’ll be addressing the sin of omission. Our sin involves more than the wrong things we do; it also involves the things we fail to do, that we should have done. All of this might sound too theological or heady, but it’s really quite practical and relevant to our daily living.

This week we'll be studying James 4:6-12 as we talk about what it means to draw near to God as we resist the attacks of the enemy. James gives us some very practical action steps to achieve this: submit, resist, draw near, cleanse, purify, and humble yourselves. You might consider doing a word study in the Old Testament, New Testament, or both as you prepare for this Sunday's lesson.

The question before us this morning, as set forward in our passage, is whether our goal in life is to obey God and submit to His will, or whether it's to gratify our own desires and passions.

And, James warns us that, if we choose the path of pleasure that this world offers, our lives will be marked by strife and hatred and division!
