Wyatt Ellis has accomplished more by age 16 than many musicians do in a lifetime. Hailing from the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, he’s quickly emerging as one of bluegrass mu-sic’s brightest young stars. With virtuosic mandolin playing, heart-felt vocals, and original songwriting, Wyatt blends the deep tradi-tions of bluegrass with a fresh, youthful energy. Backed by a pow-erhouse band of Appalachia’s finest young musicians, Wyatt deliv-ers high-octane performances that range from the Grand Ole Opry to major festivals like MerleFest and Gray Fox. His band's signa-ture single-mic setup showcases their tight harmonies, high-lonesome vocals, and blistering solos, creating a sound steeped in tradition yet driven by the future. Wyatt’s breakout year included a debut at the Newport Folk Festival, chart-topping original instru-mentals from his debut album, and becoming one of the youngest regular performers in Grand Ole Opry history. His authentic Appa-lachian songwriting and seasoned stage presence have quickly set him apart as a once-in-a-generation talent with a deep respect for bluegrass music’s heritage. 2024's IBMA Momentum Instrumental-ist of the Year and twice nominated for IBMA’s New Artist of the Year, Wyatt has collaborated with legends like Peter Rowan, Marty Stuart, and the late Bobby Osborne. His January 2025 release, Winds of Rowan County, a duet with Rowan, celebrated bluegrass roots while symbolically passing the torch. Wyatt's lead and har-mony mandolin solo on Bobby Osborne’s final recording of “Rocky Top,” along with their co-written instrumental “Fern Branch,” were both featured on Osborne’s posthumous album, a tribute to Wyatt’s connection to his hero and mentor. With a debut vocal al-bum of all-new original songs on the way, Wyatt Ellis stands poised at the forefront of bluegrass, honoring the legacy of the genre while boldly pushing it forward into a new era.
Each year, thousands of people flock to the city of Nashville with hopes of “making it”. Ironically, it wasn’t until Zach Russell made the decision to leave Music City, USA that he inked his first record deal with Thirty Tigers. The drive back home may have only been three hours long, but Russell’s journey back to old haunts in Eastern Tennessee isn’t quite that cut and dry.
In the 7 years preceding that trip down I-40, there were stints as a manager at a shoe store and a karaoke host. He calloused his hands installing irrigation systems and working as a carpenter. He traveled the US and Europe as Tyler Childers’ merchandise manager and got to witness firsthand what it takes to chase down greatness. Through it all, one thing that remained constant was his belief that he could chase it down as well.
Music has always played a pivotal role in Russell’s life. A background in Baptist and Hymnal music as a youth and a taste for hip-hop, rock, and country music informed his musical style between 2016 and 2020 as he found his footing. In 2021 the world received its proper introduction to Zach Russell as a fully formed artist with the release The Creek. This five-song EP proved not only to be a landmark release in Russell’s career, but with its lyrical depth, soaring instrumental jams and infectious melodies, it served as proof that this landmark was merely the first of many to come.
Since moving home and finding clarity, the past 18 months have been busy for Russell. He spent those months writing music, touring with The Alex Leach Band, and delivering a guest appearance on Adeem the Artist critically acclaimed album, White Trash Revelry. That wave of momentum has culminated to this moment, and the release of his highly anticipated full-length debut, Where the Flowers Meet the Dew.
Once again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem the Artist), this ten-song effort never takes its foot off the gas pedal. Dominant themes of wrestling with mortality, pondering reincarnation, and finding that ever elusive feeling of contentment in this life weave gracefully through.
As the old saying goes, “Big hitters take big swings.”, and Russell’s choice as the first single is as bold a statement as can be made. Coming in at a shade over seven minutes long, “Born Again” begins as a rockabilly banger, then midway through, via a psychedelic segue it morphs into a funky, groove heavy jam. Russell sings of reincarnation and hints that perhaps every waking moment is, in fact, an opportunity to start anew.
Smilo & the Ghost is an Americana-grit folk band born from the rustbelt and rooted in redemption. Front-ed by singer-songwriter Tyler Smilo, the band blends raw lyricism with vintage tones, cinematic storytell-ing, and a touch of cosmic twang. Their sound drifts somewhere between dusty desert highways and dimly lit city bars — a fusion of folk, alt-country, and soul with deep emotional bite.
Formed in Erie, PA in 2016, Smilo & the Ghost have shared stages with Grammy winners, national acts, and underground legends alike. Their discography includes Ghost Writers, Fingers Crossed & Godspeed, and the live album Live from PACA, with their newest record Twang & Fire capturing both fire and fragili-ty in a post-pandemic world. Smilo’s lyrics are deeply personal, often exploring recovery, survival, and the ghosts we carry — because he's lived it.
Garrett Boys is a collaboration of the Garrett brothers, Stephen and Russell. After growing up on a small rural farm, both Stephen and Russell set out for Nashville to pursue their passion for music. This led to several years of various roles in the music industry throughout multiple genres. Garrett Boys is a reflection of an inevitable longing for home, history, and heritage that finds the brothers Garrett discovering a deeper and more personal perspective of their music than ever before. Joined by Stephen’s son, Carter, they look to further explore their Folk Americana roots with Garrett Boys.
Born and raised near Paducah, Vickie Vaughn grew up singing and playing bass at churches, community events and a local country revue show in western Kentucky. After graduating from Belmont University, she formed the Vickie Vaughn Band, releasing a six-song EP of contemporary bluegrass, Buy All the Roads, in 2015. Yet more traditional music beckoned, as she helped to start the acclaimed High Fidelity around the same time, appearing on four acclaimed albums before leaving the group in 2024. Vaughn also served as a vocalist and/or bassist for a broad array of artists, including Patty Loveless, Jesse McReynolds, Kelsey Wal-don, Luke Bulla, Billy Gilman and more. In 2020, she joined Della Mae, with whom she con-tinues to perform and record. Vickie Vaughn was awarded the IBMA’s Bass Player of the Year trophy in 2023 and 2024—and, she underlines, was named a Kentucky Colonel in 2023.
Cody Christian is a country music singing man from The Commonwealth of Virginia. He is a 31-time recipient of the CCA award which has helped propel his infectious melodies to the masses. He has several songs that have gone triple turquoise and a music catalog that is thick with songs that beautifully narrate the everyday life. Cody has shared stage with lots of Red Barn alums including Tyler Childers, Charles Wesley Godwin, Cole Chaney and The Local Honeys. He's with his band "The Congregation"
Our guest Wednesday August 13, is Ragged Union. This tight bluegrass ensemble has toured the US, UK, and China, since 2013, has released 4 studio albums and one live album. Whether you like traditional sounding grass or something with a more syncopated progressive feel, I think this will check all the boxes for you. Ragged Union also tosses in their own take on some cover tunes by artists from Levon Helm, to the Marshall Tucker Band.
Their latest release is called Pyramid Stars, and you should check it out in the coming weeks to whet your appetite for a deliciously Bluegrassy evening of music and conversation with Ragged Union.
Combining the best of Americana and blues melodies with timeless Southern storytelling, award winning vocalist Stephanie Adlington and guitarist Aaron Lessard draw influence from the likes of Tom Waits and Ray LaMontagne, along with bedrock artists such as Patsy Cline and Hank Williams Sr. A Tale Of Two has opened for notable artists such as Mary Gauthier, Grayson Capps, and Peter Mulvey. Not unlike the artists who inspired them, the duo’s songs frequently dabble in stories of revenge, drinking and feature sinners of all stripes and persuasions.

Nigel Wearne has toured Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK and Canada and he's performed at a long list of festivals from MerleFest to both the Cambridge and Philadelphia Folk Festivals, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots.
Nigel is a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with diverse influences such as Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. A deep thinker and truth seeker with a penchant for all things peculiar, he sings of human frailty, grace and the cosmos; songwriting that cuts to the bone.

Villa Mure is the sonic marriage of Kendra Villiger (guitar/vox) and Colin LaMure (bass/vox), accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Ethan Evans (drums).
Villa Mure explores the musical landscape that falls between rock n roll, progressive-rock, heartland-rock, psychedelia, blues-rock, and jam. Like many groups who are difficult to place, it has been called indie-rock or alternative, but regardless of title or categorization, Villa Mure's music is alive, finding itself and place in the bigger picture with every new com-position. While no two people can give you the same answer on what to call Villa Mure's music, they can all agree that it is something brand new and genuine, yet lovingly familiar, like catching up with an old friend.
Since 2018, Johnny and the Yooahoos has been welcomed to festivals in France, Ireland, Holland, Austria and Switzerland. As winners of the IBMA International Band Grant, they are now undertaking a five-week tour of the USA renowned venues such as the Grand Ole Opry and the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival on their tour calendar. Though from Southern Germany themselves, Johnny and The Yooahoos celebrate American folk music in their own way by mixing traditional bluegrass and contemporary folk in a way, they say that is both raw and nostalgic. Our guest is a singer, writer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who has involved himself in countless musical exploits over the years, many playing out right before us on the Red Barn Radio stage. A good number of you will be familiar with this gentleman, but perhaps not so with his current creative persona, who he calls Waffle Therrod. Waffle describes its new musical exploration as "a multi-dimensional sensation on several planets". Guess who's coming back?? Davey Allen of Davey and the Midnights! Davey is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist. His work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Allen has played music professionally for the past 20 years, the last six with Davey and The Midnights. While the band now calls Indianapolis home, they formed on the west-side of Los Angeles, California in 2017.
Davey has also toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for rock hall of famer Eric Burdon. In addition, he has toured as a member of the San Francisco rock band The Stone Foxes. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center.
Scott Levi Jones, this blue-collar poet was born in South Jersey and as he says, baptized by the local nuclear plant in Salem County. Jones committed to Nashville in 2017 when he scraped together the rent for a single-wide trailer on the outskirts of town. He spent his early 20’s working construction while performing in honky-tonks and dive bars all across the Dirty South. Today he resides in a small cabin as a full-time independent musician.
The songwriter's lyrical ability has been compared to that of John Prine and Steve Goodman, yet his music reflects the sound of folk rock influences such as The Band and Little Feat. Dur-ing 2020 he released his debut album ‘The Odds of You and Me’ recorded at the historic Mu-sic Row studio ‘House of David’. The artist has since released an intimate acoustic EP, ‘The Cabin Worktapes’ captured in his living room, along with multiple singles including the viral hit ‘Free Bird' which acquired over 2.5 Million views on instagram alone
Kara Cole, an Indianapolis-based artist grew up with a grandpa who would have country music and bluegrass hootenannies on the weekends. Her uncle who was a master guitarist, helped instill in her, at a young age, her love and admiration of music. Kara, we learn, not only grew up with bluegrass in her household, but also a measure of it in her family blood. Her grandpa’s surname on her mom’s side was Stanley; in fact, Kara happens to be a distant cousin of the late great Ralph Stanley.
Predicated on authenticity and a genre-less approach, Dalton Kiser and The Downwind seamlessly traverses through a multi genre musical landscape. The foursome not only pulls inspiration from their fellow Eastern Kentuckians whom are credited with birthing the country and bluegrass scenes, but also from the gritty southern rock sounds made famous by old honky-tonk hero’s and outlaw country icons. Constantly pushing boundaries and breaking barriers, this troupe truly marches to the beat of their own drum. If there is only one hard truth when it comes to Dalton Kiser and The Down-wind, we can be sure their undeniable chemistry and reckless authenticity is a refreshing stance, and above all, one that stands to last.
From Pound, VA, Brayden Mullins started his music journey at the age of 17 in his bedroom. He drew in-spiration from many artists such as Keith Whitley, The Stanley Brothers and James King. While bluegrass was a main drawing to music for Brayden he also listened to artists such as Pink Floyd, Korn, Alison Krauss and Townes Van Zandt to name a few. The lyrics and stories behind songs is what makes music come alive according to Brayden.
Brayden aims to captivate the mind and ear of the audience with his songs. He wants his songs to challenge the thinking of those who hear them and for them to fully understand the message behind what is being said. His debut album “Unfamiliar Writings” fully encompasses this with his 8 originals tracks. These songs have only two instruments (acoustic guitar and fiddle), but they will bring you through the life of those within the songs.
The Rough and Tumble-- a terrific band of four traveling throughthe area from New England.
Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler inevitably formed The Rough & Tumble in 2011 as the friends turned into bandmates. In 2015, these bandmatesnow turning spouses sold everything they could, bought a sixteen-foot camper, packed up their instruments and a couple of small trinkets that they couldn’tpart with, and hit the road. Through multiple burnt up axles, busted tires, and consistent water leaks, Mallory and Scott continue touring relentlessly and serendipitously right through our great city of Lexington, Kentucky.
Oh, and then the rest of the foursome! Joining the Rough and Tumble on the Red Barn Stage will be Mud Puddle and Magpie Mae, their two 100 lb rescue dogs.
Stillhouse Junkies are acoustic adventurers exploring the worlds between roots, bluegrass, Texas swing, blues, and rock. Their free-flowing musical interplay and improvisation make every show unique as the trio weave through high-energy, intricately composed original songs, never taking the same path twice. They have played such beloved festivals as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass, Merle Fest, and ROMP, and their busy schedule has seen them supporting Willie Carlisle, The Lil Smokies, and Asleep at the Wheel.
Kentucky born singer, songwriter Kimberly Morgan York. York has spent her lifetime on the road making music. She started performing publicly when she was a mere three years old, travelled and played with Drive By Truckers, and eventually developed her own excellent material. Critics call her one-part Wanda Jackson and the other part Dolly Parton. We call her Kimberly Morgan York.
Brennan Edwards is a singer/songwriter based in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley. Brennan has been making a name for himself well beyond his hometown of Winchester, Virginia. Brennan's interest in country music began with Artists such as David Allan Coe and Conway Twitty, but Hank Williams ultimately played the biggest part in the music he plays today.
Brennan is also greatly influenced by bluegrass. He spent much of his childhood going to bluegrass festivals with his grandmother, and His mother’s five siblings are locally and nationally renowned bluegrass musicians, all currently recording and performing in their own bands.
This has been a big year for Brennan, and I will not be surprised to see this guy's career explode before we know it.
After years of performing around the country, Arthur and Chris have made a lot of musical memories. Both have enjoyed their time in the award-winning bands; The Wooks, The 23 String Band, and Wolfpen Branch. They are excited to continue making Kentucky Bluegrass music together and to represent their roots with some of the best musicians in the Kentucky scene today.
Emily Jamerson is a singer-songwriter from Prestonsburg, Kentucky, Emily grew up surrounded by music and family. With a voice shaped by the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Emily’s sound is part folk singer, part mountain siren. Her songs point to hope and reveal her love for the mountains she calls home.
Kraig Durco is a veteran musician from Sarnia, Ontario, touring America with his band and a new set of songs for the very first time. Kraig was focused on writing and performing material with numerous bands for so long, his own solo material took a back seat. Kraig decided it was time for a change, then took a deep dive into his catalogue, decided on his favorite 10 songs, and rerecorded them all into a cohesive LP. Since the release of this self-titled debut album.

Hollerhead, led by veteran axe slinger Jeremy Marshall, is a band that has a ton of energy, relentless passion, and a sound that never gets stuck in a particular genre trap. Hollerhead was originally formed while Jeremy lived in Lexington Kentucky in 2005. Jeremy's bands cut their teeth playing shows at legendary Lexington music clubs, and he is quick to say that this city's music scene kept him playing and growing as a musician.
Brenna MacMillan, originally from Winchester, Kentucky, began playing banjo at the age of nine. She has performed frequently in the Lexington area, which led to opening for J.D. Crowe and Bobby Osborne. Attending Berea College, Brenna played with their Bluegrass Ensemble under Al White and was awarded the Red Foley Memorial Music Award in 2018. She joined us here at Red Barn nearly five years ago playing with her brother Theo, and now plays with a variety of artists, bluegrass, Americana, and country in Nashville. We think you'll find that Brenna's playing and vocal delivery brings a fresh sound to singer-songwriter folk and bluegrass alike
D Boone Pittman from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky has been an active per-forming artist in the Kentucky area for 21 years. Prior to that he honed his craft on 90s country in west Texas cover bands. In 2019 Pittman formed the Fugitives to support his first studio album, Bluegrass American Dream. He first picked up the guitar at the age of 14 in his hometown of Stanton, Kentucky. Since writing, recording, and performing his own original music, Pittman has been nominated for 13 Josie In-dependent Music Awards, 2 Hollywood Independent Music Awards, and has won 1 Appy award for best original song, “The Question” in 2024. His latest release, Resurrection Noise, is currently up for album of the year at the ’24 Josie Awards in Nashville, Tennessee.
The band Katlan from the Transylvania Region, plays authentic folk music from Transylvania and Hungary as well as bluegrass music. Each of the members has been involved in folk music for more than 10 years and now we have started a special project. Our first album will be released soon and will feature Transyl-vanian Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy folk music as well as American bluegrass music.
In addition, in January we have been invited to the United States of America, to Kentucky, to meet Ray-mond McLain, retired director of Morehead State University, one of the most outstanding musicians in bluegrass music, who will give us a music workshop and we will also record a joint album in an American studio. Their goal is to bring Transylvanian folk culture to America and to bring back the experiences they learn here.
Champs of the Sun. Mark Bell, the lead singer is a quirky writer and a singer with terrific vocal range and force, and just about every track on their most recent album presents some kind of lyrical or rhythmic surprise. It's hard to know sometimes where the songs are going, but you can still enjoy the ride. That's next week, Champs of the Sun.

The band, founded by Samuel May and Tristan Frazier, made waves early on in the Kentucky music scene with two 70s psych rock-inspired albums released before the age of 21: Content (2018) and A Trip Into the Sun (2019). After a pandemic and the addition of guitarist Colin Michael, the trio is set to usher in a new era for Bedford, blending old and new sounds.
Low Gap is primed to take the Country Music world by storm. Brothers Gus and Phin John-son are relatively young musicians but are already making an impact with their authentic writing and catchy tunes. With roots in Eastern Kentucky and Southeastern Ohio, Gus and Phin grew up listening to Bluegrass and Americana music. That—combined with Folk, Coun-try, and Classic and Southern Rock—creates the unique tone that has become the duo's sig-nature sound. Gus wrote his first song at 13 years old, and only months later wrote “Mock-ingbird,” their biggest hit, which was ranked second on Grady Smith’s list of “non-hit sin-gles” for 2022. The brothers backed the success of “Mockingbird” up with a self-titled al-bum full of passion and relatability. On November 25, Low Gap released their latest single, “Say a Prayer.”
Jay Bragg, the leader of this great ensemble, has recorded and released hundreds of songs, performed over 3,600 shows across America including tours with Alan Jackson and Chris Stapleton. He's founded a music charity and has become an international Christmas connoisseur with his annual ‘A Songwriter’s Christmas’ tour and original holiday compositions.
Whether it’s writing songs, making records, performing live or volunteering for hospice patients - something he still does every week - Jay makes music to serve others, contributing a healthy dose of joy and good vibes into a culture that is increasingly inundated with the opposite.
In October 2024, Jay launched his latest obsession - a fictional North Pole alter-ego act called King Kazoo & The Reindeer Band - a whimsical gumbo of jazz, blues, swing, Christmas and Tin Pan Alley music. It was Seeing the affect the kazoo had on listeners young and old, that had Jay began developing King Kazoo & The Reindeer Band.
Maya de Vitry is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Nashville, TN. She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster, PA, playing in creeks and forests, surrounded by fields of cows, corn, and soybeans. She took piano lessons from her grandmother, studied classical violin in school, and learned old-time fiddle tunes and bluegrass songs at campfires and festival campgrounds with her family. Maya first traveled as a fiddling street musician, but quickly fell in love with the craft of songwriting and picked up the guitar and the clawhammer banjo. She spent seven formative years performing in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds, a hard-touring acoustic string band known for passionate live performances and stirring vocal harmonies. When the band parted ways in 2018, Maya began devotedly creating a powerful new body of work as a solo artist.
Maya’s music unabashedly blurs genre, weaving country, folk, rock, and pop elements through her vibrant storytelling and her extraordinarily dynamic singing. Whether she is playing with her electric band in a bar or sharing a song on acoustic guitar at a folk festival, there is an emotional immediacy and a striking magnetism in Maya’s music. She has been invited to support a variety of tours - she has warmed up stages for innovative singer-songwriters like John Craigie and Aoife O’Donovan, and bands like Mighty Poplar and The Wood Brothers. In addition to performing and recording, Maya is a sought-after co-writer and co-creator, and has been steadily and closely collaborating within her chosen musical community of Nashville, Tennessee for nearly a decade.
Mikki’s roots are planted in Syracuse, New York, but Nashville, Tennessee, became home in 2013 only a couple weeks before turning 14 years old. As soon as she hit town, Mikki began performing as a singer-songwriter in and around Music City at various venues such as fairs, festivals, bars, and BBQ joints. Her passion to perform on stage earned her a BFA in Performing Arts, studying in both Los Angeles and New York City. After graduating in 2020, Mikki returned to Nashville to continue her journey as a recording artist. Mikki Zip most enjoys writing in the story-telling ways of country music. In her songs, there's an influence of old school country, a little bit rock-n-roll, and today's modern sound.

In the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska, The Wildwoods emerge as a folk/Americana trio, a musical tapestry woven by the husband-and-wife duo, Noah (guitar) and Chloe Gose (violin), alongside long-time friend and bassist, Andrew Vaggalis.
Their presence has graced stages alongside artists such as Mighty Poplar, Sierra Ferrell, Aiofe O’ Donovan, Melissa Carper, Jamie Wyatt and Joe Nichols at concerts and festivals like Summerfest, FreshGrass and the Oyster Ridge Music Festival. Moonshine Drive is a Bluegrass band from Northern KY and Cincinnati. Moonshine Drive appeared on Red Barn Radio when they were just coming out of the gate, and they'd already established themselves as a staple in the Cinci Bluegrass scene. While core members are still here, there are great additions vocally and instrumentally, and with that continued evolution in their sound. Great to have another fine evening of some good ol' Bluegrass pickin.
Andrew Montana was born and raised in Southern California and spent his summers with his family in Appalachian North Carolina where his musical style was most influenced. Known for his captivating storytelling and mesmerizing melodies, Montana has been making waves in the indie folk scene with his heartfelt and evocative songwriting. In June 2024, Andrew released his sophomore album ‘American Pastoral’. Andrew is currently in the studio recording 2 new albums, one of which debuts his work as a composer.

Red Barn Radio kicks off season 23, with group of players who are nothing short of legendary. Recipients of the International Bluegrass Music Association's Distinguished Achievement Award, the McLain Family Band has become internationally known as one of the most spontaneous, creative and spirited groups performing original and traditional bluegrass music.
Since 1968, the McLain Family Band has performed in 64 countries and all 50 states. They have appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Grand Ole Opry.
The McLain’s are less than 2 months away from their induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, and we feel privileged to help them begin that celebration on the first program of a brand-new season!
Canon Tyler is a singer-songwriter & guitarist from the hills of North Georgia. With sonic elements of Bluegrass and Contemporary Acoustic Music, Tyler’s lyrics blend the story telling aspects of traditional American folk and Laurel Canyon era singer-songwriters. Together this creates a sound that is both fresh and familiar to fans of roots music. Tyler’s latest album, “Thickets & Brambles” is an homage to the rich heritage of North Georgia. Alabaster Boxer, a unique music project, is a band hailing from southern West Virginia. These guys got together not all that long ago, and already Alabaster Boxer might be considered the best assembly of rock all-stars that West Virginia has ever seen.

Jack Browning is an artist and musician from London. A sucker for blues, folk and country music with experience touring all around the UK and Europe, he sings about love, loss, folklore and most everything in between, raising cheers and raising beers in equal measure.
Randy Steele is an award winning banjo pickin’singer/songwriter from Chattanooga, Tennessee. A career firefighter who picked upthe banjo to decompress and pass the time at the fire station, Randy’s creative music ranges from character based narratives to deeply personal & revelatory.

These regional bluegrass veterans--at least a couple of whom played on Red Barn Radio 15 years ago-- have been playing together for nearly a decade. Before they got together ten years ago, each player had honed their craft drawing upon what they could learn from the standout bluegrass pickers of their time.
They call themselves String Roots Trio, they arebased in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky and play their music with an Appalachian flavor. The group consists of Mike Creech on the guitar and vocals,Jimmy Smith on the banjo and vocals, Holly Creech Smith on vocals, and Terri Powell on the bass. It’s been quite a stir forthe Minnesota progressive folk-rock-country sextet Maygen & The Birdwatcher. In late 2021 they released their debut full-lengthalbum, Moonshine – (which Americana UK wrote is “stunning”) –earning them Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and AmericanaArtist of the Year) and landed opportunities to join festival stages with bandslike Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Cauthen, Grace Potter, and The Ozark MountainDaredevils.

Will Overman, a great singer-songwriter from Virginia, is back to play the Red Barn stageafter a couple years have passed. Will works hard and takes the business ofmusic very seriously. In fact, I've heard Will say that 80% of his time isspent planning, promoting, reaching out, so that he can make things work andhave the ability to get around the region and share what he does.

Brock, Lanzetti, Ogawa is the moniker for a new trio whosemembers are widely known through their association with the jazz-funk groupSnarky Puppy. Zach Brock (4 and 6 string violins), BobLanzetti (acoustic and electric guitars), and Keita Ogawa (percussion)create in the spaces between jazz, folk, experimental, ambient, groove, andworld music. Their debut album entitled Drawing Songs was released on November10, 2023 by GroundUp Music.

Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson of songwriter duo The Montvales spent much of their formative years busking amidst the Elvis impersonators and musical saw players of the town’s Market Square, honing their uniquely boisterous harmonies and driving, joyful sound. Eventually they graduated to playing indoors on the local Americana radio station, WDVX, and found community in old-time circles around town. After moving away for several years to seek their fortunes separately, Molly and Sally finally reunited in 2019 to write and record their first album, Heartbreak Summer Camp. The two now make their home in Cincinnati, Ohio, they've named themselves the Montvales, and they have no shortage of clubs and other venues looking to showcase their talent.
Clark Kissick is a singer/songwriter from Owingsville, Kentucky. Clark sings with this great “old soul” baritone voice you are go-ing to love!
Clark is a man of many talents who has lived a life of many ups and downs and all-arounds! Join us next week not only to hear this talented musician play with a great band, but also to hear him talk to Bradford about his life on and off stage, including his tenure with the University of Kentucky football program.
Charlotte Morris discovered her passion for this work at a young age because the fabric of her home and family life was music. Classical music, Broadway tunes, and especially folk music. “Every family car ride" says Charlotte "was filled with folk clas-sics, – Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Simon & Garfunkel, and Peter, Paul & Mary.”
Charlotte learned a number of instruments on her own, and be-fore she knew it, Charlotte said, “Music grew from something I loved to something I needed."
In January of 2018, Charlotte joined Lonesome Traveler – a na-tional concert tour where the cast performed the history of folk music, starting with Woody Guthrie and ending with songs
from Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. While on the road, folk legends including Tom Chapin, George Grove (Kingston Trio), Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey (both of Peter, Paul and Mary) performed with the cast at various venues.

Guitar Player Magazine lists her as one of the top 50 guitarists of all time and she has recently been listed among the top 10 female guitarists. She performs on a 20-string harp-guitar and her gentle sense of humor and facility across multiple genres is revered by audiences and guitarists worldwide. She has recorded with country legend Chet Atkins, performed with Les Paul and countless other greats in "Muriel Anderson's All-Star Guitar Night®" shows over the past 30+ years. Muriel's CD Nightlight Daylight placed first in its category in 11 national awards, followedby Acoustic Chef, an international CD with cookbook. The boundaries of her creativity and positive energy are stretched even further with Muriel’s new release "Sailing Dreams," inspired by sailing from Fire Island NY to Maine. It is proof positive of her enduring legacy as a composer and lyricist.
Rooted in central Virginia, Lord Nelson has been covering the back roads and highways of this country. Their latest studio album, “Transmission”, PLACED nicely on the Americana charts and garnered play across the country. Currently working on their follow up, slated for a late2024 release, the road shows no signs of slowing down. Media outlet PopMatters says this, “Lord Nelson alerts you to the power and glory of loud rock ‘n’ roll".
Jeremy is an award-winning Roots Rock artist hailing from the small southern town of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, on Red Barn Radio next week in a special solo performance. Jeremy's gritty vocals and poignant songwriting, endear him to a growing fan base who enjoy hearing him share his personal stories in song. His vibe draws upon a range of musical traditions, many native to this region, but I think you'll agree he is a guy carving out his own unique sound.
Kyle Kelly, a North Carolina native, discovered his love for music at the early age of eight. Kyle was drawn to the old classic sounds of greats such as Lynyrd Skynryd and Waylon Jennings, which inspired him to learn guitar and drums.
During college, Kyle was a pitcher for Catawba Collegebaseball team, until he suffered a career ending injury. After recovering, Kyle found perseverance in music. As a self taught musician, Kyle began to write songs about his life, his truck, and his friends. Not long after, Kyle began to play live shows across North Carolina.
Kyle Kelly released his debut record “Lake Weekend” in July 2020, which is seeing a tremendous amount of success on Spotify. In response to the graciously warm reception by thousands of listeners, Kyle released a follow up music video to “Lake Weekend”, where you can see his love for classic cars, friends, and having an all around good time!
From classic cars to classic country music, this 28 year old country music artist is a true throwback, embracing the look and sounds of the ‘70s and ‘80s. A nostalgic feel is often reflected in Kyle’s music while still implementing his own personal touch of a modern spin.
Cliff Westfall was born and raised in Owensboro, not far from tiny Rosine, Kentucky where Bill Monroe inventedbluegrass music, and he grew up listening endlessly to Kentuckians like The Everly Brothers who changed the path of popular music. Though he got his startplaying cowpunk music in Kentucky, he soon left his home state behind for the bright lights of New York City. “The term ‘country music’ is almost a misnomer anyway,” argues Westfall. “A big part of the original audience was people a generation or two removed from the farm who had migrated to the city. People more familiar with factory work and honky tonks than with the back end of a mule, you know? The music they wanted to hear was as much about cutting loose, dancing and having a good time as it was about sadness and hardship. That was kind of the story of my family. Or maybe I’m just attractedto neon lights, I don’t know.”
Safari Room is the indie rock outfit and brainchild of AlecKoukol (Omaha-native, now Nashville-local).
“We’re not that different you and me,” Alec Koukol repeats throughout the swelling bridge of “Garden Talker,” and that line might as well be a mission statement for Safari Room. Koukol describes “human connection as a founding cornerstone” as the project’s ethos, and that message is a through-line for Safari Room’s entire discography so far. The band is known,particularly in Nashville, for their special brand of indie rock, their live shows and the sense of community that comes from singing Safari Room’s songs together. That’s Safari Room’s hope, and that’s what they’re going for on their as-yet-untitled third LP. The son of a West Virginia coal miner, Charles Wesley Godwin sings about the industry that’s both blessed and cursed his home state for centuries. His voice, with its tight, old-world vibrato, is perfect for the song, as are the light layers of violin and pedal steel.

From the Bootheel of Missouri the band known as Wilhelmina, a unique blend of red dirt country, Americana, and southern rock. These guys grew up with each other and started playing music for the fun of it, just tilling the soil to see what would grow. What they grew was a following. Wilhelmina released their first single “Deuteronomy” back in July 2023. Since then, they’ve released a 5 song Live Acoustic EP “From a Shed” and 2 music videos! They’re currently working on their first full album coming out this year.
Born and raised in Eastern Kentucky, Clarke is a singer, a writer, a multi-instrumentalist, and a music producer who has made his mark on stages across this country. Though he lives and works in Nashville now, he's always out and about playing the region and winning fans everywhere he lands. Clarke will play songs new and old as he's on the road with Nolan Taylor and just released a song called "The Light".
Jacob Perez is a songwriter living in Cincinnati, Ohio. Spending much of his childhood and teen years moving around the country has informed the artist's voice and songs. The COVID-19 pandemic found Perez furloughed from his day job and this season of extra time proved the most fruitful creative period of his life thus far. The batch of songs written during this period became the core ofhis debut record, "Get Well," released in March of 2022. His earthy and contemplative Americana sound took further strides on his 2023 release "Signs" He'll be touring with songs from that album this year, and onour next program he'll whet your whistle with a solo set, here on the Red Barn Radio stage.
After spending the mid 2000's as a working musician in New Orleans, Warren Byrom returned to Lexington, Kentucky to focus on writing and recording. In his many years in Lexington's music scene, Warren has collaborated with so many of the city's players, I'd be challenged to name half of them.
Warren Byrom & The Fabled Canelands has toured extensively performing regionally through Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee. In 2023 Warren released his third record, Dreaming the Sun,which I've been listening to this week with great pleasure. We love Warren, the life he's lived and the rich stories and music his adventures have inspired. The Bibelhauser Brothers, based in Louisville, are super talented brothers who will absolutely wow you with both their vocal and instrumental power.
In addition to writing songs recorded by award-winning bluegrass artists including Del McCoury, Balsam Range, Michael Cleveland, & Dale Ann Bradley, Aaron Bibelhauser is sought after as a songwriter, vocalist, solo recording artist, and bandleader. Aaron has spent the past twenty years working with several Kentucky-based ensembles and hustling as a sideman and utility player on banjo, pedal steel guitar, dobro, piano, bass, and guitar.
Twin brother Adam has spent the past two decades developing one of the most powerful voices in bluegrass music, and his own style as a bassist, aswell as a guitarist. His commanding presence, grit, and grace, both on and off stage are in a league of their own.
For over 4 decades, Gary Brewer has been a very highlyrespected and successful singer, songwriter, musician, promoter, and producer. Gary performs and records in several different genres, he has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and the Lincoln Center multiple times, writes and records all original material, ran Louisville'sLargest free Bluegrass Festival (Strictly Bluegrass Festival), booked artists in all genres (Some of which include: Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Mary Wilson and the Supremes, Mark Chestnut, the Isaacs, the McKameys, Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Ralph Stanley, etc.), and produces his own projects and TV Shows. He is a full-time performing artist and has toured all 50 states numeroustimes and 18 countries in Europe. His heritage goes back 6 generations and he tours today with his 2 sons (along with a banjo player).
Gary has recorded for multiple major record labels, including Copper Creek, releasing 29 studio albums and a double live album which was recorded on one of his European tours. Now, he has launched his own label called SGM Records (Stretch Grass Music). He has released an additional 21 albums on his label. GaryBrewer specializes in Bluegrass, Country, Old-time, Americana, and Bluegrass Gospel. A lot of his early recordings charted in Country and Americana as well as Bluegrass.
He has recorded several top 10 hits in the Bluegrass Industry. Gary has also had very successful albums that can be considered Folk and Old-time Mountain Music. Hereceived the honor of having the #1 Bluegrass-Gospel album in the Nation. Gary is a BMI songwriter and gives fans his own original material.
Hailing from the hills of WV, drawing influence from the Texas songwriter greats to Elliott Smith and Jason Isbell, Shawn Benfield blends his own pop sensibilities with classic country to create a unique sound that is distinct yet familiar. Sugarcane Jane, otherwise known as Anthony Crawford and Savana Lee from Loxley, Alabama —have been Americana’s sweethearts from Alabama’s Gulf Coast for over a decade.
Between them, they have amassed a rich musical heritage working with such notables as Neil Young, Steve Winwood, and Dwight Yoakam. The music they make together is simple and direct, rooted in country and rock, and anchored by their sweet and soulful harmonies.
To know the couple’s roots is important in understanding the foundation of the duo’s incredible story. The American south isn't just Brent Cobb's home. It's hismuse, too. A Georgia native, he fills his Grammy-nominated songwriting with the sounds and stories of an area that's been home to southern rockers, soulsingers, country legends, and bluesmen. Cobb has a name for that rich tapestry of music — “southern eclectic" — and he offers up his own version of it with his newest album, Southern Star.
“Down here, there's a lot going on and there's nothing going on at the same time," he says. “You've got all these different cultures in the south, and everything is mixed in together. Otis Redding and Little Richard were from the same town in Georgia. So were the Allman Brothers. James Brown and Ray Charles grew up right down the road. Born of Appalachian soil in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee,Sarah Kate Morgan sings, plays, and writes like she’s been in these hills since the dawn of time. She’s had plenty of varied influences, beginning with hearing a classical music CD belonging to her family and going on to discover old time music through a dulcimer built by her grandfather. She began playing dulcimer at age 7.
This proved to be a pivotal moment. At 18 years old,Sarah Kate placed 1st at the 2012 National Mountain Dulcimer Championships inWinfield, Kansas. She’s gone on to build a unique personal style which honorsmountain dulcimer giants such as Jean Ritchie while working across genres tobuild something new. Her dexterous approach to the instrument is one that onlymasterful artists can bring to the table; much like Bruce Molsky and thefiddle, having been a dedicated student of the dulcimer’s complexities Morganis able to distill them into a beautifully polished package.
Well-known and widely respected as one of the leading experts of the mountain dulcimer, Sarah Kate is also a first-rate singer and songwriter. Her earthy and poetic lyrics embrace the highs and lows of southern appalachian life while her voice does the same – moving between alto and soprano parts with ease. Her crystal-clear but rootsy vocal style combines the best of country, old time, bluegrass, and gospel influences who, like Morgan, foreground their cultural roots. All of this goes hand in hand to create a musical experience akin to asonic baptism.
None of this is lost on the giants of roots music. Sarah Kate has performed and/or recorded with artists like Tyler Childers, Alice Gerrard, and Erynn Marshall & Carl Jones. In addition to her musical prowess, Sarah Kate is an accomplished scholar who graduated from Morehead State University with degrees in Traditional Music, Appalachian Studies, and Arts Administration.
Currently based in Hindman, Kentucky, she practices, cultivates, teaches, and preserves Appalachian folk traditions in her role as the Hindman Settlement School’s Traditional Arts Education Director. Whether calling square dances, playing the mountain dulcimer, or making music and creating art with Appalachian youth, Sarah Kate Morgan’s work centers on a lived belief that artand tradition are living, breathing tools that foster hope, build community, and create change.
Cody Lee Meece is an award winning singer/songwriter from Somerset, Kentucky. Cody Lee spent the majority of his life playing music all over the United States. During his travels he picked up different flavors and styles of songwriting and storytelling. He has developed a deep earthy, intimate and very vulnerable writing style. Scars and tattoos tell his story of a life spent on the run in dark places, only to come out clean and wise.
In 2022 Cody Lee Meece & The Poor Excuses released a 3 song EP with Death Before Pop Country & Smith Music titled “BIG BAD LOVE”. In 2020 Cody Lee released his first EP titled “The Break” and receivedAlbum of the Year for the Lexi Awards.

Cody most recently was awarded 2022 Best Guitarist in the Appalachian Arts and Entertainment Awards and was nominated for two others. Back in 2021 Cody recieved a Lexi Award for Album of the Year. Khegan McLane is a 26-year-old songwriter from Charleston, West Virginia, who started writing songs and playing guitar as a way to fill time after a sports injury in his high school years.
He released his first two singles in the spring and summer of 2021 and is now in the process of mastering his new record which he recorded with Zach McCord out of Bridgeport, West Virginia. The album, titled “Old Flame” is set to be released soon, if it's not already out there. Khegan will be accompanied by his band, the Raccoon Wranglers, and you're gonna like their sound.
Singer/songwriter Jordan Lee King. Jordan comes from the hills of Eastern Kentucky, and his songs are a reflection of his upbringing in Bell County, KY and the hardships he has witnessed.
“I want people who aren’t from this area to have a glimpse of what life is like here for a significant amount of people. And for those that are from Appalachia, I want them to be able to feel pride. Reality here is often harsh, but at itsbest, it’s beautiful.” Jordan recently released a couple of singles “Cars and Refrigerators” and “Levi” , and I'd urge you to have a listen to both tunes, to prime the pump for next week.
Andrew grew up playing piano in church as a teenager. He was a coal miner, then an underwater welder. Andrew is also a talented pianist, and it would be in upstate New York where he first explored his talent as a vocalist.
After 5 years of New York he moved back home to where he was born and raised, in London Ky. He met Logan the bass player at a gig that they jammed together in Richmond Ky. Andrew then added saxophone to the mix and then guitar and drums to form the soulful Gospel-esque band now called Andrew Moore and Hooch. Andrew says they're super excited to release their debut album in the next few months. And we're excited to share what's happening with the Hooch here on Red Barn. Husband and wife duo, Shannon and Brittany Clark joined the Warped Tour to represent Ohio in the mid-2000s.Soon after, tragedy hit the family with the loss of their 2nd daughter, and for a time the music stopped.
Imminently, Shannon & Brittany’s creative songwriting would become the healing tool that brought them together and revived the band. When their oldest daughter, Navie joined in 2019 as a vocalist/instrumentalist, they began experimenting with a new sound and Shannon Clark & the Sugar was born.
Through a chance encounter in Nashville back in 2006, Benjamin and Kassie Wilson were sure of each other from the start. “Kassie knew she was going to marry me from the first time she saw me…and she was right,” Ben gloats. Formerly known as My One and Only, the duo has reimagined their“southern-soul,” “curious-grit” and emotionally honest lyrics into Americana act, Goldpine. Having released their self-produced debut LP, One last year, they’re gearing up to deliver their second full-length record, Two — set for release on Friday, September 8. After nearly a decade of honing in on their sound, and evolving their music, the name didn’t necessarily grow along with it. “We were called My One and Only for about 5 years,” the two explain. “Throughout those years we realized that the name was putting out a certain vibe, of the depth of the music, thatwas not quite accurate with where our style was heading.” Drawing inspiration from their roots, the name Goldpine signifies their past and their future; Kassie grew up on Pines Road in Alabama, so ‘pine’ represents the past and ‘gold’ is the lasting and valuable element that represents thefuture.

Kyle Eldridge, has been burning his way into the Country & Western scene and has quickly become in demand both domestically and abroad. From Louisville, Kentucky Kyle has known as one of the most prominent guitar players in the traditional scene for his Joe Maphis/ Merle Travis and Western Jazz styling.
Kyle got his start playing in the south where he met Upright Bassist Dakota Collins who brought him to Nashville, Tennessee. They began playing Honky Tonks on the famous Broadway strip and soon after, he recorded his debut EP in Los Angeles, California at Deke Dickerson’s studio.
Kyle has played alongside artists from Jim Heath of Reverend Horton Heat, to Shaun Young of High Noon, and Dale Watson and his Lone Stars among others.
Buck the Taxidermist is the moniker of Kentucky song writer, Kyle Ayres (writer, singer and guitarist) This Lexington rock band began around 2016, drawing inspiration from modern sounds and vintage, simple throwback melodies alike. Blending influences of modern heroes like The War on Drugs, Wilco and Dr. Dog and classic songwriting like Townes Van Zandt, McCartney, Paul Simon and Neil Young the results tend to vary with wherever he finds creation flowing. The group has over the years changed roster several times but always out necessity and amicably. The beauty created from constantly rotating musicians allows the music to stretch and warp.

Jake Kohn From Stephens City, Virginia is a singer/songwriter who is making some mountainous waves in music venues and festivals all across the south. At only 16 years old, Jake has developed a vocal and guitar style and writing voice well beyond his years. This Fall, he'll play Americanafest, the biggest lternative country music festival in Nashville, TN. His video for “Frostbite,” a gut-wrenching and jaw-dropping showcase of his songwriting and vocal ability, continues to make its way across all platforms bolstering millions of views.
Kindred Valley started with Lacy and Brett McCoy, two musicians and fellow Marshall University students who got together, thinking they might be able to write a song. It was early fall of 2020. The pandemic was raging. There wasn’t a whole lot else anyone could do, except look for ways to spend time.
Some other players came and went, but eventually Kindred Valley started to come together as a trio with a handful of originals. The three released the songs, but there was essentially no place to go with them. Public performances were essentially unavailable and, as fall turned to winter, the pandemic worsened, and they had school.
Fast forward a couple years and the successful release of a collection of songs, mostly written by Lacey, released at the very end of 2022, and really finding some traction on social media. Performances at the Purple Fiddle, Mountain Stage, and now Red Barn Radio has found Kindred Valley a fast-growing fan base who love their thoughtful writing and the sweet harmonies they put together.
“When I was a kid, my dad was in this tiny fringe political group called the Democratic Socialists of America” explains songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Baiman. “That was considered extreme, something I didn’t tell my friends about. Now my generation has had to wake up to the intensity of our own economic oppression. We sit around talking about how anyone affords to buy a house, and how we can get rich people to pay for our albums”, she laughs
Baiman finds hope in this shared experience as a mechanism for activism. On Common Nation of Sorrow, Baiman’s third LP, she tells stories of American capitalism, and the individual and communal devastation it manifests. “The reality is that the vastmajority of us are being taken advantage of by the same brutal economic and political systems. Maybe that shared oppression is a place in which we can meet and fightback”, she explains.
Pierce Edens is an independent musician and singer-songwriter from Western North Carolina. He is best known for his powerful vocals and haunting, fiery music that captivates listening rooms and excites dance floors in equal measure. Edens has shared the stage with notables such as the Wood Brothers, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earl, Southern Culture on the Skids, and Hayes Carl.
Corduroy Brown is a feel good, poppy, rock performer from Huntington, West Virginia. The music uses sounds from the 90's and 2000's, and a focus on self worth. After being revived and placed on life support in 2021, he made a full recovery. Now themes of mental wellness and a willingness to live life to the fullest are represented in the music for his second time on the Earth.
Alex Miller has already secured his place in the global consciousness and in the hearts of music lovers alike with his larger-than-life personality, tireless work ethic and four high-impact singles: “I’m Over You, So Get Over Me,” “Don’t Let The Barn Door Hit Ya,” “Through With You,” and “When God Made The South.” Building on the popularity he earned during American Idol, Season 19 and embracing the lessons he learned from its superstar coaches, Miller worked hard to define his sound and take his brand of “fresh” Country, fine tune it, and broadcast it to the universe. Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist. His work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Allen has played music professionally for the past 20 years, the last six with Davey and The Midnights. The band formed on the west-side of Los Angeles, California in 2017. The group immediately set out to establish themselves as one of the hardest working Americana bands in Southern California. They’ve toured up and down the Western US coast, the deserts of the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the cornfields of the Midwest, and through the musical heartland of the US South. Since 2021 the band has called Indianapolis, Indiana home.
Michelle Billingsley wraps charmingly cutting lyrics in boisterous acoustic strumming and along with her dryly dark sense of humor and a (whip)smart-assed vocal delivery, it all sounds a bit like Emmylou Harris went through the looking glass. She'll remind you of the familiar songs you heard playing on the radio in the back of Dad’s old truck cruising down back roads. She’s got a little bit of honky tonkin’ country up her sleeve, and a dusting of folk on her boots. Her shows are undeniably fun—genuine, irreverent, unique and fearless. Billingsley’s new debut album for Western Myth Records, Not the Marrying Kind—produced by multi-instrumentalist Matt Brown—is an Americana gem. Out of the gates, Brown made the sage choice of putting legendary producer/engineer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Josh Ritter, Iron & Wine) behind the boards—and the drum kit—for the sessions.

Charlie Rockwood Farr and Lynne Taylor are singer songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who first met while on tour with Alt-country-rock band, Liz Frame and the Kickers in 2011. They went on to work together in the Lynne Taylor Band and Halo and the Harlots, finally landing in 2018 as Rockwood Taylor, an edgy Americana duo that calls on a wide range of influences from Woody Guthrie to John Prine, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, Nina Simone to Patsy Cline to Patti Smith. The result is a collection of rootsy, gutsy, honest songs that transcend boundaries, taking the listener on a gritty journey through our collective human experience. Based in Massachusetts, they have toured throughout the Northeast US as far west as Ohio, and as far south as North Carolina. They released their first EP, Finding Home, in April 2019, which was nominated for Album of the Year by the New England Music Awards.
Scott Whiddon is a writer, teacher, and musician based right here in Lexington, KY. Not only has Scott played here on this stage with bands such as Fanged Robot and most recently Kentucky power-popsters Letters of Acceptance, he's also shared stages with industry heavyweights like Lucy Dacus and Elf Power. Scott is currently on a short acoustic run of shows in such towns as Louisville, Knoxville, Athens, GA and others, promoting his new album, The Best of Intentions, slated for released in September.
Singer/Songwriter Ethan Wayne has braided together a sound that can only be described as Eastern Kentucky. Genre doesn’t seem to be the topic of conversation in the Bluegrass, but a certain sound does seem to develop in the area. Ethan has spent the last decade on refining his craft to what some folks might say is a new harvest. Inspired by mostly local musicians Wayne does have some contrasting inspirations (Wayne Graham, Josh Nolan, Nicholas Jamerson, Joe Walsh, Chris Cornell, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Waylon Jennings and Blind Melon to name a few). Wayne has an indirect style of writing that has distinct meaning yet is easy to form a personal connection with. His broad swath of sound and unique instrumentation can bring silence to the listening room or can make a Wook wear out a pair of dancing boots. Ethan is actively working on his first full lengthalbum at Fat Cave Studios titled “Sounds of Home”. No date has been set but you can look for this album to release in the Spring of 2023.
Daniel Cain, is a Kentucky born singer-songwriter & artist hailing from the small town of Stanford, where Appalachian foothills meet Kentucky bluegrass. Anatural-born genre-bender, Daniel’s songs span the sonic spectrum, so far, expressing hues of grassy folk, outlaw country, roots rock and blues. His lyrics are borne from the heart and explore the themes by which we live our lives! Daniel has touched the heart & soul playing at venues and festivals in Kentucky and now delving into surrounding states and beyond. Glad to have him here for a session while he's still on hand! We really like what Daniel's got going on, and we think you will too!
Abe Partridge writes and plays to make you sit up and think. Abe's first album, Cotton Fields and Blood For Days, was released in 2018 to glowing reviews across the Americana board. Tony Paris of Bitter Southerner said" Abe plays guitar the same way he writes lyrics, bashing strings with abandon until they're just about to come loose, and then beautifully picking notes until every last word falls into place. Most recently, Partridge and co-producer Ferrill Gibbs released the Alabama Astronaut podcast, where they explore songs previously undocumented at churches in Appalachia. The podcast finds Partridge chatting with Holiness preachers and looking into the practice of snake handling. It was in the Top Ten documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release.
Brennan Edwards is a singer/songwriter based in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He has been making a name for himself locally in his hometown of Winchester. Brennan’s music is greatly influenced by bluegrass and I wonder if his family had an influence on him musically? Well I have learned that Brennan spent much of his childhood going to bluegrass festivals with his grandmother. And then, get this: His mother’s 5 siblings are locally and nationally renowned bluegrass musicians, all currently recording and performing in their own bands. We’re glad Brennan is coming to Red barn Radio, and that he's bringing with him fiddler Ben Hirsch.
Katie Toupin has found home in her role as a solo artist after leaving the critically acclaimed alt-country band, Houndmouth, in 2016. Toupin had enormous success with Houndmouth after releasing their sophomore album, “Little Neon Limelight”. The single, “Sedona”, reached #1 on Billboard’s Triple A Chart. Toupin made multiple appearances on David Letterman and Conan as well as toured internationally during her time with the band. Toupin has since released a live EP, “Moroccan Ballroom”, a self produced album “Magnetic Moves, and her newest creation, a mini-album, “Little Heart”, released in 2021. Katie's solo collaborators have also been noteworthy, including Grammy winning engineer for Cage The Elephant, Jeremy Ferguson, who co-produced her newest release, “Little Heart”. Toupin’s solo live show does not disappoint as she blends her entire discography into an energetic, full band experience. It appears that after a thirteen-year career, Toupin is just getting started.

Rachel Messer, who grew up in a Fort Gay, WV, holler, draws her inspiration from the country and bluegrass greats before her, penning lyrics with a straightforward “say it how you see it” style, true to her Appalachian roots. Also, an impressive yodeler, she served time on Team Blake during Season 15 of NBC’s The Voice, earned herself a good fan base across the world, and has worked hard to for every opportunity she can find to share her love for storytelling. Her partner, Connor Dale; was born in KY and raised in New Orleans. They put together a great show; complete with the love, banter, and chemistry showcased in their presence on stage. While the entire music industry and community nearly ground to a halt with the COVID-19 Pandemic, Bedford utilized this time to re-focus and set their sights beyond the moon and stars. Currently in the progress of recording their upcoming self-titled record "Bedford", the band is pushing 'full steam ahead' into a bright future - and you don't want to miss out!
Matt Koziol is a Nashville songwriter who has collaborated with a host of super pros in the industry-- from John Paul White & Charlie Worsham to Abby Anderson & Bre Kennedy, among others. As his friends and collaborators say, "Matt has a knack for pulling remarkable stories from peers to use as inspiration in the songwriting process."
Of his work, Matt says, "“I make music to feel, to move, and to heal — not only people who hear it, but also myself. So, while I have the chance to do it, I’ll make sure every chord and every note has every last piece of me with it to give. There is no sense and no worth in holding back.”
The Brothers Gillespie began in late 2018 on the suggestion of a friend to record an EP of songs they had been kicking around for fun. After getting a taste of attention from the 2018 eponymous release, they took a chance and moved operations to Johnson City, Tennessee, with the promise that they would give their musical aspirations a year, and if there was more partying than progress, they would give it up and move on.
Luckily the partying coincided with the progress, and in early 2019 The Brothers Gillespie released their debut album, “Love & Death”, building on their foundation of gritty rock n’ roll, and masterful songwriting. They moved back home to Waynesville, North Carolina to save money and take their show on the road, playing everywhere from Richmond to Dallas and all the bars in between. After a successful year, The Brothers like many had a quiet, but solid 2020 and 2021, releasing three successful singles.
The Brothers Gillespie return to the stage in 2022 with their massive sophomore album, the conceptual “American Pastoral”.
Tyler Hood, comes to us from southern Indiana. Tyler Hood writes with a wit and sincerity that is both sharp and bold. From heroic ballads of country living to refreshing tales of deliciously mundane everyday life, Tyler writes and sings the stories of the region that raised him. He released his debut studio album “Lost Love and Home” with his previous band the Hill Figs in April of 2022. Then in September of 2022 he released a solo live album “The Magnolia Sessions” recorded in Nashville Tennessee. Be sure to join us for this up and coming artist, Tyler Hood.
Spooky Fox, a.k.a Yovany Pino, is a Kentucky boy full of surprises and charming wit. Spooky Fox delivers a brash array of colorful storytelling and witty realism with nothing more than a guitar, an old Samsonite suitcase and a tambourine. Spooky Fox has developed a knack for creating an experience and describing emotions that are personal but also relevant to anyone who has ears to hear. As the son of a single mother, Spooky Fox writes about life experiences ranging from growing up poor and struggling through life in a single parent home to being a father.

Abigail Spangler - (vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, keyboards) Hailing from the small town of Fort Spring in Southern WV, Abby has been singing all her life. Starting in church, she played piano and sang hymns alongside her family. She met her now husband, Josiah Spangler, in grade school and learned to play guitar from his father, musician and songwriter Mark Spangler. Inspired by the likes of classic singers such as Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, her influences also reach to artists such as Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer), Julie Miller (Buddy & Julie Miller), and Lera Lynn.
Josiah Spangler - (vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, drums and percussion) Josiah Spangler is from Lewisburg, WV and has been playing music with his family from a young age. Starting out as a drummer, Josiah later branched to singing and songwriting, and now writes with his wife, Abby. Drawing from influences such as Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Josiah also draws inspiration from musicians such as Levon Helm and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco).
Evan Olds - (songwriter, electric and upright bass) Also originally from Lewisburg, WV, Evan Olds has been writing, arranging, and playing music with his family and multiple groups for most of his life. His main instruments being electric and upright bass, Evan also writes and arranges for Blue Twisted Steel. With influences ranging from Roger Waters to Carol Kaye, Evan also finds inspiration in musicians like T Bone Burnett, Blake Mills, and Jonny Greenwood.

The sound from the mountains of Appalachiahas long been swelling at its banks, on the verge of spilling over the confines of folk and electronic music convention.
Andrew Preston and Austin Tackett – The Woodsheep – aim to highlight the diversity, creativity, and storytelling that abound in their ever-evolving eastern Kentuckyhome by shoring up their own roots.
Preston, whose solo records have been featured at the International Bluegrass Music Association Songwriting Showcase and on several public radio venues and publications, and Tackett, a finalist for Hoedown In The Holler, met as Morehead State students at the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music in 2014.
The folk/bluegrass duet quickly evolved its own sound; Preston’s experimental background and inclination to poetry coupled with Tackett’s guitar virtuosity and knack for hooks came a blend of folk, electronic, and Americana. The contrast between the two lent itself to a blend of simple and infectious melodies, soaring vocal harmonies, contemplative lyrics, and foot-stomping rhythm. Their shows have since gained a reputation for mixing light-heartedness and nostalgia with inspired lyrics and arrangements; original indie songs mingle readily with covers of some of the greatest Appalachian folk standards.
In 2016, the Woodsheep were joined by bassist Melissa Caskey and drummer Matt Holleran. That same year, their debut record, Watching Mars, was released worldwide, followed by a regional record release tour.

Bear Medicine is the vehicle for the songs of Joshua Wright. The group originated as a quartet intent on blending the sounds of American primitive instrumental music and standard pop and Americana sounds. This iteration of the band spent a number of years playing local shows and doing small tours across the east coast all while releasing their first album “The Moon Has Been All My Life”. After this version of the band had come to its natural conclusion, Bear Medicine went on hiatus for several years in order to write new material and form a more fitting band that suited the new direction of the songs. The current lineup consists of Kim Conlee (keys, flute, vocals) Emily Woxihara (Drums, Vocals) Scott Willmuth (Bass) Sam Mcwilliams (fiddle) and Joshua Wright (Vocals, Guitar) The band reformed and started playing locally again while recording their second record “Dog is Love”. The new record focuses on a large band sound with lush harmonies and sweeping strings, but still keeps the core of the Bear Medicine Ethos: Songs of questioning, dealing with loss, and trying to understand one's place in an uncertain and seemingly ambivalent world. The newest record “Dog is Love” is available now on all streaming platforms and on vinyl.
A curious and fresh combination of grit and humor, Josh Morningstar is knocking down stereotypes with his worn boots and unforgettable raspy voice. He is a small-town boy that originally hails from Funkstown, Maryland, and he carries those roots in a suitcase with him everywhere he goes. His small-town charm is evident in the way he greets people, and in the conversational way that he weaves the stories of his life into his music.
In front of the bright lights and behind the microphone isn't where Morningstar feels most at home. Named the 2018 Texas Radio Songwriter of the Year, he and his Kristofferson signed guitar have knocked out melodies in dingy hotels all across the country. He’s written songs alongside Kendell Marvel, Channing Wilson, Autumn McEntire, and many more. Morningstar was also the writer of several Cody Jinks songs, including his #1 hit “Must Be The Whiskey".
His lyrics force listeners to sit up and pay attention, and his songs are always full of truth-bearing stories. The familial connection Morningstar forges with people continues long after his shows are over. Josh Morningstar has shared the stage with some of today’s most sought after folk and country artists, including Shooter Jennings, Cody Jinks, Tyler Childers, Todd Snider, Colter Wall, and Ward Davis. Morningstar continues to lead the charge on the front lines of a new wave of country music - one full of soulful honesty, the familiar and true twang of an old guitar, and provoking melodies that tattoo stories to the souls of the listeners. His ability to write about tragedies and victories enamor his tribe of self-proclaimed “Crazies”, and the best part of it all is that he’s just getting started.
Sam Foster is a road dog. He lives and breathes the idea that repetition and regularity are the chisels to refine his craft. Hailing from Winston-Salem, Foster emerged on the North Carolina music scene in 2014. He’s brought his brand of tenacity to eager crowds all over the Southeastern United States ever since.
Foster is a little bit country, a whole lotta rock and roll. While drawing much inspiration from legends of country music past and present, Foster’s sound can be more broadly described as rock. His roots run deep into the vein of American music, and he’s continually inspired by folk, soul, rock, and rhythm and blues. After releasing his debut solo album Rough Edges (The First Cuts) in 2015, followed by 2018’s Hardened Hearts, Foster formed Whiskey Foxtrot with singer-songwriter Seth Williams. The result was 2020’s Hard Lines & Headlights - the first and only studio offering from the outfit.
In late 2021, after splitting with Whiskey Foxtrot, Foster formed a backing band and now tours as both a solo act as well as Sam Foster and The Obsolete. Foster is proud to announce the release of Heatwaves, his first record with The Obsolete. Out June 17, 2022, the record retains Foster’s roots in country and Americana but forges ahead into new territory for the leadman.
On “Let Me Out,” “Loud & Clear,” and the eponymous “Heatwaves,” Foster’s lyrics evidence a clear, growing concern with our planet and all the people on it. He digs into local lore with “Memorial Day” and “Get It Tonight,” and reveals his own story with “Seven Alarm” (sobriety) and “Drama Queen” (social anxiety). Heatwaves displays Foster’s full range of musical styles, and is a testament of where Foster is today on his artistic journey.
Sam Foster has shared the stage with national touring acts such as American Aquarium, Seth Walker, Adam Hood, and Trapper Schoepp.
Larry Bellorín hails from Monagas, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe, after a decade in South America, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe's acclaimed "latingrass" band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants.
Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.
Composer and guitarist Douglas Lora moves with versatility between classical and popular music, and has been established as one of the most prominent artists of his generation. A member of the Brasil Guitar Duo (with Joao Luiz) for more than fifteen years, and seven-string guitarist of the choro and samba band Caraivana, Douglas Lora has a full touring schedule worldwide, and has collaborated with artists including Paquito d’Rivera, Marco Pereira, Jovino Santos Neto, Ney Rosauro, Marina Piccinini, and many others. In 2011 he joined his brother, percussionist Alexandre Lora, and mandolin virtuoso, Dudu Maia, to form an ensemble dedicated to Brazilian traditional music, Trio Brasileiro.Lora has performed as a soloist with the Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Orquesta Metropolitana of Sao Paolo, and the Orchestra of the Americas. Critics and audiences around the world have praised his recordings with the Brasil Guitar Duo, and distinguished artists and chamber ensembles have recorded his compositions.Douglas Lora studied composition and classical guitar at Faculdade de Artes Alcantara Machado in Sao Paolo and received a Master’s Degree in Performance from the University of Miami. Lora was a winner of the Concerts Artists Guild Award in 2006 with the Brasil Guitar Duo, and has eight recordings and five original film soundtracks to his credit.
The Bringdowns are an Appalachian West Virginia Rock band that have found a niche all their own. The stories in their songs are honest and gritty, and the influences you'll hear in the music, really diverse.
The Bringdowns have developed some new music, and Matt always has interesting projects going on around his home of Beckley West Virginia.
For 40 years Andrew Farriss has written, produced, and performed music all over the globe. Andrew Farriss has written for or produced various other acts, such as Yothu Yindi, Tom Jones, Alisan Porter, Tania Kernaghan, and Jenny Morris. His personal awards include: Producer of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards for his work on Jenny Morris’s album Shiver which went triple platinum. Inducted into the Australian Songwriter Hall of Fame in 2016.
In 2015, Andrew Farriss was awarded a Coombs Fellowship with The Australian National University in Canberra, where he lectured and mentored students, culminating in the Soundbites Concert where Andrew shared the stage with ANU student musicians. Andrew was highly honoured by the Australian Government, on Australia Day January 26, 2020, as an AM, which means Member of the Order of Australia.
Never stepping away from being a creative songwriter, Andrew has spent time writing for himself and others in Nashville and Australia over the past 10 years, and has now embarked on a solo career. Offering his first single release, Come Midnight, in 2019, which topped the country charts on radio stations all over Australia, his follow-up single Good Momma Bad was released at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2020. Andrew’s debut self-titled album – featuring a collection of eclectic songs with a unique blend of Rhythm, Roots and Country influences – was due for international release late 2020. Due to the ever-evolving situation globally with COVID-19, the album release date has been postponed. Never one to sit idle, Andrew wanted to continue to share his music with fans, and will now release an EP this October. The Love Makes The World EP is a Folk, Ballad, Contemporary and Experimental release and focuses on humans and their relationships with each other, and also the earth.
The Louisville newgrass-fusion jam band Hot Brown Smackdown's fusion of jam and funk and bluegrass has been drawing crowds all summer at music festivals, and their fan base grows every time they play. They’ve also been writing some new music for their soon to be finished new album. They just shared their amazing new tune, “Empire,” recorded at Louisville’s Deadbird studio with engineer Tom Curtis. It’s the first music release from the group since violinist Ellie Ruth Miller joined the band. Check it out, and then join us next week for a full show with Hot Brown Smackdown.
Riley Baugus grew up In the Blue Ridge of Allegheny County North Carolina with a family and in a community of Old-Time music fanatics. Though when he was ready to start playing banjo, his family wasn't in a spot to buy him one, he and his dad were able to drum up some DIY instructions from the Foxfire book series and make one of their own.
Riley then became entrenched in what he found to be the soul of old time music, which are the vast array of stories told by the songs.
While Riley's discography features only two solo endeavors playing banjo, he has collaborated and contributed both as player and vocalist to more than 20 other recordings, making guest appearances on albums by the likes of Willie Nelson, Allison Krauss and Robert Plant
In the holler where John Haywood grew up in Floyd County, KY, he was surrounded by family, aunts and uncles and mostly older boy cousins who worked out their testosterone on sports and roughhousing. John found art, in the form of painting and drawing. Heavy metal music grabbed the attention of his middle school brain, and his parents got him a guitar at age 12. John's journey is a fascinating one, especially what brought him to the banjo and then back to the mountains, in Knott County where he lives now with his wife and kids and also owns and operates a Tattoo shop in Whitesburg.

Nick Dittmeier & the Sawdusters understand that to stay relevant, country and Americana—like any long-running musical genres—must be unceremoniously leveled from time to time. Blasted by a cold steel wrecking ball, and reassembled into new forms atop the rubble. And what better moment for a scheduled demolition than with all of planet Earth in a holding pattern, straddling the deep
chasm between past and future. Into this void arrives Heavy Denim, an album that artfully sidesteps any slavish, formulaic adherence to roots-music traditions.
“At the height of the pandemic” Dittmeier says, “it became clear to me that—with everything we’d been through—there was going to be a different mind coming out the other side. As a band, we decided we weren’t going to try to go back and replicate who we were, or the reality we were living before covid. A lot of people were fixated on getting back to quote-unquote normal, but to me it
seemed pretty obvious that wasn’t even on the table.”
Forcing themselves out of their comfort zones, Dittmeier & the Sawdusters began stripping back their roots-rock bluster and leaving room for new textures: drum machines, loopers, synths. Heavy Denim finds Dittmeier and the Sawdusters fearlessly reinventing their sound. The album is in the tradition of Dire Straits’ spacey, synth-anchored early-’90s country curveball On Every
Street; Alabama Shakes’ transformation from gritty Southern neo-soul revue to danceable indie-rock darlings on Sound & Color; and the symphonic R&B and art-folk Sturgill Simpson wove on the astral
loom that is A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. With its refreshing creativity and sonic adventurousness, Heavy Denim is one of those rare and wonderful records that expands the boundaries of its genre.
Dozens of musicians been members of The 1937 Flood of Huntington, WV, over the years since it stumbled into existence back in the hippy-dippy mid 1970s. As writer Dave Lavender of the Herald-Dispatch has noted, "The Flood doesn't rest on its laurels as West Virginia's most eclectic string band. Born in the 1970s when fiddler Joe Dobbs met Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen, the Flood has played recent gigs with everyone from the Huntington Symphony Orchestra to Marshall University tailgate parties.
The band, which also features Doug Chaffin, Sam St. Clair, Michelle Walker and Randy Hamilton, plays everything from folk classics of John Prine and Bob Dylan to the blues of Mississippi John Hurt.
"Throw in some Dixieland jazz, some Irish fiddle tunes, a great sense of humor, some pure mountain melodies from the likes of such state treasured songwriters as Hazel Dickens and yes by God, the best kazoo playing between here and say Kalamazoo, and you got the 1937 Flood," adds Lavender.
Born and bred by the banks of the Ohio River in Boone County, Kentucky, Jay Skaggs has been a songwriter’s songwriter from the beginning, and isn’t stopping anytime soon. He harks back to counting pennies to buy candy at the local rabbit hash general store, to his adolescence and the pains of becoming a person, and the tender and slow yet sometimes abrasive passage of time. Or songs like this one, “Stranger Psalm” with words that seem to dance circles around phrases unfolding on a weekend bender, buttressed by his silky baritone voice and gliding two-finger guitar picking that is reminiscent of a highly caffeinated John Prine.
Jay was first recording bluegrass and fiddle tunes of his native Kentucky at the age of 14, before coming under the influence of Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and Elliot Smith. Now, over a decade of songwriting later, his lyrics have matured in a more purposeful direction, amalgamating his influences into a fiery stew that’s been labeled “grunge country,” though Jay prefers the umbrella of “no genres, no gods.” He’s been all over the country, playing little shows and keeping the “DIY” spirit alive with songs that paint a picture of a life on the road, in the ditches and in a truck. He’ll likely be in your town soon, so get the couch ready cause the boy needs some rest.
Jayce Turley is a singer/songwriter from Greenup County, Kentucky whose debut album The Opening Act released April 2022.
Heavily influenced by his father and grandfather’s love of music, Jayce started attending bluegrass camps and seminars every summer at age 6, where he picked up the fiddle and dobro. He settled into guitar at the age of 12 and started singing and writing songs at 14.
In the few years since, Jayce has shared bills with artists including Justin Wells, Logan Halstead, Nolan Taylor, Drayton Farley, and Larry Keel.
His musical influences include Jason Isbell, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton, Billy Strings, Jerry Garcia, and Tyler Childers.
Laid Back Country Picker plays good country music and treats everybody right. He has played and recorded with Grammy winners. He has performed at the fabled Ryman Auditorium, Bonnaroo and at Red Rocks. His show combines 70s country music, classic guitar rock and hillbilly sensibility. Rejecting the modern for the surreal, Laid Back and Honey deliver a unique musical experience.
With roots embedded in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and a sound unhinged in the capital of Texas, Shovelin Stone is a music almost as unique as the friendship it stems from. A shared passion for old-timey bluegrass is what brought Makenzie and Zak together, but it’s the unknowing joy for the moment and the obsession with the complications that life brings that continues to push the duo forward. Within heartfelt lyrics and a unique musical composition the indie folk sound that projects from these two is not only going to get the audience thinking but
on their feet.
With the addition of multi-talented bassist, cellist and mandolin player Russick Smith, and rock drummer Brett Throgmorton, Shovelin Stone is gearing up to release their sophomore album recorded deep in the Appalachian Mountains with Grammy winning producer Chance McCoy of the Old Crow Medicine Show. With songs about longing, love, and the hunger to be heard in this big world, it is hard not to relate to these four on their quest for success. The road is winding but one thing is for sure that with Shovelin Stone at the wheel it’s going to be a wild ride.
Having just released their first album recorded by Grammy-winning producer P.J. Luke was Born and raised in Paintsville, KY. Influenced by previous Eastern Kentucky artists such as Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, and Chris Stapleton, like them, Luke looks to capture the Appalachian sound and the daily lifestyle of the people who make up the area. Luke is really finding an audience out there, and we're glad he can be with us in his early career.
Hailing from Winston-Salem in North Carolina, Sam emerged on the music scene in 2014 as a solo artist. He's a self-proclaimed "road dog", playing to eager crowds all over the Southeastern United States. Whiskey Foxtrot, the band he co-founded with Seth Williams, has helped him establish a following on local, regional, and global levels, but he's here tonight back in solo! Matthew grew up near Ashland, KY. Having learned music and lore from his Grandfather Hobart and soaking up Appalachian music from local Kentucky traditional musicians, Stallard brings that into his music. A born fiddler, we're so excited to have Matthew Stallard on the stage tonight!
While Eric has satisfied his rocking sensibilities doing vocal and guitar with the Rock Band Alcatraz shakedown, he worked the circuit for some time performing his own tunes, primarily solo and acoustic. The new phase of his career has him buddied up with three players: Seth Murphy, cello and multi-instrumentalist, and John Ferguson, keys/bass/vocals, and Ben Caldwell, drums/vocals. We're so excited to have these amazing musicians on the stage!
James VanDeuson is a traveling Singer/Songwriter from the foothills of Central New York. While driving with his band, "The Rollin' Rust," in a ret-rofitted school bus, James writes folk songs that speak directly to the trials of the human condition. In his most recent work, James responds to the current political climate, both socially and through the creation of his new-est album set to release early-2022. James is currently on tour with his new band, throwing a curve ball into his traditional folky-performance with the addition of two others, calling themselves… “The Rollin’ Rust.” The Rollin’ Rust is a three piece Americana band that has been playing together on and off since they were teenagers.
Nicholas Jamerson is an Eastern Kentucky artist best known for his singing and writing songs. Jamerson’s songs are known for their attention to the natural world, warm hearted characters, and the plight and triumphs of the modern-day hillbilly. Mixed with word and indelible melody, Jamerson has put together a catalog that reaches across broad spectrums in both substance and style. Nicholas Jamerson has endeared himself to fans in the region and beyond with his beautiful voice and the harmonies that pour out of his songs, which he often plays with his band, the Morning Jays. Having performed on some of the most hallowed stages and events in the region, like the Grand Ol' Opry and the Ryman, Red Barn is so excited to welcome Nicholas Jamerson in this solo performance on our stage!
Formerly touring under the name “Blackfoot Gypsies”, this really talented trio of players based in East Nashville has changed its name but not its mission, which is to bring their fun and raucous brand of Rock n Roll back to the region and beyond. These guys have established a loyal fanbase across the US and Europe-- fans who anxiously await each new single or video they release, and especially look forward to feeling the energy Matthew, Zach, and Dylan bring to any stage they're on.

Nat Myers is a songwriter from Kenton County, KY. A poet with an amazing voice, Myers will blow you away with folksy blues and talented pickin', an incredible acoustic blues player and singer, and uses this musical medium to tell his stories. His delivery follows in the footsteps of players like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi Fred McDowell and his favorite, Charlie Patton. Nat's music isn’t pure; it’s raw and rigid. But it’s his unique sound that continues to make crowds across the country drop their jaws.
Moonlight Mile are an American Alt-Country Bluegrass Rock band formed in Sandy Hook, Kentucky in 2021. The band was formed by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Jonathan Pennington and dobroist Shane Johnson. Their music is inspired by a wide variety of artists and musical styles—from The Rolling Stones to the Stanley Brothers, and are proudly and intentionally a reality check for mainstream country and fedora-wearing folk country hipster posers alike. Will Overman’s genre-bending, storytelling approach to songwriting is a product of being born and bred on the east coast, finding love and being tested on the west coast, and finding a renewed passion for his art around the world. From fronting a touring band while attending college, through-hiking the Appalachian Trail and traveling around the world for several months, to witnessing his parents divorce, standing by his wife as she fought and beat cancer twice, and going through tough financial situations while trying to make it as a creator; Will’s songs evoke the wisdom of an old soul with youthful optimism.

Holiday music-- both nostalgic and festive-- infuses our winter season with warmth and comfort. Our guests this evening usher in the holiday with the distinctive sounds of the Mountain and Hammered dulcimers. The trio called Nero's Fiddle, based in Lexington, Kentucky. They came together only a couple of years ago, and they've delighted audiences in the region who enjoy traditional Appalachian tunes arranged for Mountain Dulcimer, which is the official Kentucky State instrument. Nero's Fiddle also performs a lovely repertoire of holiday tunes which they bring with them today. The Ted Yoder Band, from Indianapolis Indiana arranges and performs an eclectic range of music featuring a percussive pairing of marimba and hammered dulcimer. We know many consider the band's lovely holiday album, Comfort and Joy, to be among their favorites during the winter months. We are honored to have the Ted Yoder Band and Nero's Fiddle here on Red Barn Radio to help us ring in the holiday season.
Three’s Company Blues is a trio from Charleston, West Virginia, playing classic covers you forgot you loved, as well as our own blues/rock style originals. The band was born of our driving desire to play music and keep the blues alive. What began as a fun side project among friends quickly turned into a serious, focused celebration of their passion for the blues, rock and roll, and celebrating expression through music. They took that passion to the 2020 Huntington Blues Society's 6th Annual Blues Challenge and took first place. They travelled to Memphis, TN to represent WV in the 2022 International Blues Challenge, competing with artists from all over the world. They recently had the honor of being one of Cedar Point's Bands in Residence last summer July 12-16, 2021! Playing 6 shows a day for 7 days straight, it was an unforgettable experience, and they are still so elated and grateful to have been given the chance to play for so many lovely people.

Jeri Katherine Howell has been writing and performing as a solo artist – and collaborating with Kentucky musicians – for over 15 years. In 2007 she won 2nd Place in the Flat Rock Music Festival Songwriters Contest for the title track of her first album Branch to Branch. Fast forward ten years, Jeri Katherine received a Fulbright grant with the U.S. Department of State and performed and lectured throughout San Carlos, Costa Rica with a fellow named Nat Colten, also with us this evening. In June of this year, Jeri Katherine and Nat Colten released their debut album, Holding On.Jeri Katherine Howell and Nat Colten. An Americana/Folk singer-songwriter duo based in Frankfort, Kentucky, these players will really win you over with their beautiful harmonies thoughtful songwriting. Jeri Katherine and Nat each wrote five of the tunes comprising their debut album, Holding On, lyrical stories from their journeys around the world, with sounds rooted in their Kentucky home.
Davey Allen is a versatile songwriter, musician, and artist whose work is deeply rooted in the vast American songbook. Though his family migrated north from rural Tennessee in the 1950’s Allen’s music retains a southern quality and grit. Davey has toured extensively as a solo artist and as keyboardist for others. Davey is an advocate of many social causes and has previously donated a portion of his album sales to the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which works on behalf of San Joachin Valley individuals and families at the receiving end of harmful and discriminatory practices. -- Both his talent and hard work have opened lots of doors for him as an artist. Davey Allen has shared the stage and performed with players from Bob Weir and Patti Smith to Nathaniel Ratliff and Kelsey Waldon. For the past five years or so, Davey has recorded and toured with Rock n Roll Hall of Famer, Eric Burdon and the Animals. While Davey Allen has spent a good deal of his adult life both in California and on the road, he now lives and also records in the Indianapolis area.
If you're a lover of good ol' mountain music, you're gonna want to meet Tyler Hatley and Justin Clyde Williams. Joined by fiddler Matt Parks, these guys perform as The Dick and Tammy Show, mingling beautiful guitar and heartfelt lyrics.
A native of Monroe County, WV, now living in Charleston, J. Hatfield has spent the last 10+ years playing, standing in, and recording for various bands and artists in the areas around WV and VA. Only in 2021 did Hatfield first shift roles to the front of the stage. In addition to fronting his own band, he's had lead guitar duties in the bands The Parachute Brigade and Peddler's Glory. Red Barn is excited to have J. Hatfield performing tonight!
A fistful of years ago, Julie Szewc (pronounced “Chefs”) and Dave Huebner met in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming with one central thing in common; a love of all kinds of music and a thirst for making it. Along with Fernando Serna (drums/percussion) and Taylor Phillips (bass), they have all knit their passions into the musical family that is The Two Tracks. From their home in the postcard town of Sheridan, the band stirs western roots and wilderness philosophy into a stew of nourishing connection. Cutting undeniable grooves in the road of Americana music with their new release Cheers to Solitude, Sheridan WY quartet The Two Tracks bend genres into a sound laced with a hint of that “high lonesome” tradition. Their newest release Cheers to Solitude, is produced by Will Kimbrough who has also worked the studio with the likes of Rodney Crowell, Josh Rouse, and Todd Snider. Cheers to Solitude garnered rave reviews from No Depression, Glide and Relix magazines. The Two Tracks self-titled 2016 debut was voted “Wyoming’s Best Album” by Wyoming Public Radio.
Adam Chaffins has roots buried deeply in country music’s soil, including several years with legendary band Town Mountain. His new sound, though, is a reflection of his personal and musical experiences that weave together a sound and mood that is distinctly unique while being comfortably familiar.

There’s only two words to describe Jordan Allen & the Bellwethers: pure energy. Their original song catalog contains storytelling-style ballads, and earnest light-dimmers, but they also lean into their ability to pump up a crowd with full-on fist-pumping rock songs.
Jordan Allen & the Bellwethers is an Alt-Country/Indie-Folk band based between southeastern and south central Kentucky. Their music focuses on telling stories and is accented with electric cello and guitar to create a unique musical experience. They have been performing as Jordan Allen & the Bellwethers since May of 2013.
Over the years, the style of music has changed, but one thing has always stayed constant: the band's attention to songwriting. In 2016, their song "The Wanderer" took home the overall winner at The Richard Leigh Songwriters Festival song contest. The band’s frontman, Jordan, has been included on the writer’s night roster at the Historic Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee since February of 2017.
The band has 3 full length studio albums. The latest record, called Give My Love to Jenny, was released in November of 2020.

Troy Burchett’s emotional lyrics and controlled, Elvis-esque vibrato are enough to catch anyone’s attention who cares at all about country music. After years of tuning his craft in Nashville, Burchett’s style has matured, and it’s been recognized. His band, Troy Burchett and The Postmen, was granted entrance into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2019!
Mason Colby was born and raised in the musically rich Gulf Coast, splitting time between Lafayette, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. But it was in Kentucky that he picked up a banjo and started making music in earnest. A founding member of traditional stringband The Jarflies, Mason has been part of the old-time music scene in Kentucky for over a decade and is now writing songs that blend his love of Acadiana, the Bluegrass, and Texas songwriters like Guy Clark, Jolie Holland, Lyle Lovett, and banjo hero Danny Barnes.
For his first two EPs of original work, he collaborated with Lexington producer and multi-instrumentalist J. Tom Hnatow (Horse Feathers, These United States, Vandaveer), a natural fit in terms of sound and vision. Other important contributors include Don Rogers (Mason’s mentor as part of a Kentucky Arts Council Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant), Robby Cosenza (Horse Feathers), Montana Hobbs (The Local Honeys), Zach Martin (Lylak), Abby Hamilton, Art Mize (KY Partisans, The Jarflies), and Cecilia Wright (Bear Medicine, Senora May).
Rebecca Rego has been a Midwest singer-songwriter, recording artist, and producer for over 15 years. She has written and recorded eight albums and toured the country many times over, solo and with her Chicago-based band The Trainmen.
In 2014, a mysterious package arrived on her doorstep. In it was Lucia Berlin’s short story collection, “A Manual For Cleaning Women.” The note simply said: “I think you’ll love this.” As Rego began picking through the dark, witty, romantic prose, the stories slowly began to seep into her consciousness and affect her songwriting. After a few years, she realized she had created a unique set of songs based on Berlin’s book.
In the fall of 2019, Rego traveled to Northern California, where a handful of Berlin’s stories take place, and recorded six of these songs at Panoramic Studio in Stinson Beach with engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab For Cutie, tUnE-yArDs,) backed by multi-instrumentalist J. Tom Hnatow (Horse Feathers, Ringo Starr,) and Alysia Kraft, Staci Foster, and Tobias Bank of Fort Collins, CO based band Whippoorwill. The resulting album “Songs For Cleaning Women Pt. 1” will be released November 11, 2020. The release will be celebrated with a livestreaming performance during Grammy Award-winning music ensemble Eighth Blackbird’s “Chicago Artists Workshop” series.
As an independent female artist, Rego is influenced by the unflinching, raw honesty found in Berlin’s art. Many of Berlin’s stories are semi-autobiographical accounts of her time working blue-collar jobs, raising four children as a single mother, and dealing with her own alcoholism. Berlin died in 2004, never receiving critical acclaim in her own lifetime. Rego’s goal with this release is to pay homage to Berlin’s stories and introduce new audiences to her work.
Grizzly Goat's music is as the band's name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly's blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo.

Hailing from rustic Darke County, Ohio, Shannon Clark & the Sugar weave together heartfelt emotions with a distinctive flair to create a sound that can only be described as Midwest Americana Soul. This family band writes and performs their original music about a personal loss, struggles, and the human condition. Apple News raves, “The raw emotion of Shannon’s vocal delivery exposes the bittersweet beauty of his lyrics.” Husband and wife duo, Shannon and Brittany Clark joined the Warped Tour to represent Ohio in the mid-2000s. Soon after, tragedy hit the family with the loss of their 2nd daughter. For a time the music stopped. Imminently, Shannon & Brittany’s creative songwriting would become the healing tool that brought them together and revived the band. When their oldest daughter, Navie joined in 2019 as a vocalist/instrumentalist, they began experimenting with a new sound and Shannon Clark & the Sugar was born.
Eli, a musician from Perryville, KY, plays good old-fashioned Old Time. After playing banjo for more than a decade, he's a master of the percussive clawhammer and drop-thumb style of playing, native to West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Him and his band are gonna put on a fantastic show this evening!
Zoe Howard is an Appalachian Rock artist who is from a small town in East Kentucky, Salyersville, KY. She has had an interest in music from an early age when in church listening to the praise team. Zoe began voice lessons at the age of 5 with a local instructor, Mike Hall. She then moved to Clyde Porter, a voice/ music instructor located at the famous Mountain Arts Center, located in Prestonsburg, KY. Zoe has been a student of Clyde’s since she was 6 years old. She picked up acoustic guitar from Clyde and then continued her interest in playing other instruments such as drums, variety of percussions, and electric guitar. She also had mandolin lessons from a Kentucky native by the name of Don Rigsby. Zoe has performed on many occasions and a variety of stages throughout her 17 years. She has also been recently employed part time, at the Mountain Arts Center as spotlight tech or whatever is needed.
Her band Yellow Line was created with the mindset to just follow that Yellow Line on the highway to wherever music leads them. They are all related through and by the Mountain Arts Center located in Star City, Prestonsburg, KY.
The band is a musically-entwined, rock'n'roll, husband'n'wife songwriting team from Louisville, KY. Joining them on percussion is Jordan Hubbard. Rooted just as much in 70s progressive rock as modern alternative, this show will be one to remember!
George is a Nashville-based fiddle player who tours as a band leader and fiddler for hire, working with artists such as Front Country, Peter Rowan, Missy Raines, and many more. Born in New Zealand but moving to Australia as a 16-year-old and winning the Australian National Bluegrass Championship three times, he's an ace on the fiddle and will blow you away!

It was a place that gave birth to her dreams and opportunities to reach them. Today, the power of her music is that it is refreshingly simple yet surprisingly complex. Red Barn Radio welcomes Darrin Hacquard. Now living in Lexington, Kentucky, Darrin paid his dues in West Virginia-based old-time string band The Fox Hunt, whose members went on to perform with the Hackensaw Boys and Laura Mae Socks. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, his debut solo record, "Signs and Wonders," lies somewhere between the rough-and-tumble drunkenness of "Tonight's the Night" Neil Young, the psychedelic bluegrass excursions of Dillard & Clark, and fellow Ohioan David Allan Coe in his Columbia prime.
Formed in 2017, "Thomas Taylor Band" is dedicated to preserving and continuing Traditional Country Music. They focus primarily on the Honky Tonk Genre, but we have a vast catalog of material. They released their first album "Another Round" in August of 2020. The band consists of Lead Singer, Rhythm, and Lead guitar player Thomas Taylor, Don Drummer on Pedal Steel Guitar, Butch White on Drums, Alex Donahue on Bass and Backup Vocal, and Jerry Wood on Fiddle. We are also influenced by Western Swing music- We are as country as it gets!
A group based in Louisville and Lexington, Letters of Acceptance began years ago and has now picked up where it left off! Having released a lot of music and toured around the region, this is an amazing band!
They're a revolving group of performers, some of whom have performed on the Red Barn stage before! Playing Celtic music with a Bluegrass twist, we're excited to have Croghan's Crossing on the show with us tonight!
This is a band comprised of several familiar faces in the emerging Bluegrass scene. With a style that nudges traditional to new places, this Kentucky-made Bluegrass quintet are a force to be reckoned with.
DM and the 1601's come to us as a largely acoustic trio for this show—which suits the two guitarists just fine considering their history of playing Bluegrass music-- but DM and the 1601's also perform as a full-bore Outlaw Country operation which they'll return to with a band reconfiguration and new drummer. This weeks trio is Dustin Middleton, Jamie Stewart and Kyle Wynn.
Drift Mouth is an alt-country, tongue-in-cheeky, punky-garage-grass band. They have a new release, "Loveridge is Burning", that was just released in August of last year after a long delay. We're excited to have them on and share the music with you!
Nathan has spent the past decade averaging 200 shows a year at bars and honky-tonks across the country. It's from this experience he cultivated his new collection of story songs fro his 10th album, the self-produced "Songs for Nobody". His music has been described as a "unique brew of Americana, rockabilly, and outlaw country".
Drew is a country music singer/songwriter from Charleston, West Virginia, who finds his music influenced by southern rock and classic outlaw country music! His NEW single “Lifestyle” is out now on iTunes & all music platforms. We are pleased to have him with us on Red Barn this week!
Authenticity can’t be faked. So when an artist hails from the heartland and shares stories drawn from personal experience, the music resonates in ways that genuinely express their passion and purpose. Josh Merritt is one of those artists. A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, he inherited the grit and honesty so essential to heartland culture. He's spent the better part of the past decade honing his chops on the Southern tour circuit, and we're so excited to have him on Red Barn!

Kyle Fields, who was raised near the Country Music Highway at Greenup, KY, quickly rose to prominence after winning the “Your Big Break” contest. His video submission was selected out of thousands, and for Kyle that said a lot about his passion for music. With a classic country sound but with his own spin using experiences from growing up in small town Kentucky.
Born from the dark, rich soil of West Virginia, raised in the clear, hop-scented country air, Sierra Ferrell cut her teeth on the rail lines, truck stops, street corners, and dingy, dimly lit listening rooms all across the land. To date, she’s enchanted audiences at major festivals around the country and has shared the stage with the likes of Trampled by Turtles, Parker Millsap, Charley Crockett, and The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band.
An old soul in a young man. Born and raised in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, Clarke Sexton has been making music throughout the entirety of his life. At 23, Clarke is pushing music forward while staying in tune with that classic influence everyone wants to hear. With a backbone sound of Waylon Jennings and raw, real lyrics in the vein of Tyler Childers, he’s known for tapping into and stirring the emotions of those listening. Whether it be creating music solo or with other artists, Clarke is constantly working on his sound and creative soul.
Blind Feline is a 3-piece, deep-fried psychedelic rock 'n roll band formed in Louisville, Kentucky, conceived in the Appalachian mountains and founded upon the value motto, "Let’s get funky and saucy with it boys!" These traditions have been a driving force of Blind Feline music since their first EP "Lost in the Moss", released in 2018, and with the joy of every show since the beginning. The adaptation and evolution of our sound has been a series of psychedelic discoveries and experiments with country, jazz, bluegrass and funk - sometimes being accompanied by horns and keys. They're always expressing a joy for the serendipitous ways of being alive from one story to the next.
Nominated for Best Americana Song in the 2019 Independent Music Awards for "The Hardest Part," voted The Listening Room Network’s 2019 Artist of the Year, and Southeast Regional Folk Alliance Official Showcase Artist in 2018. The Rough & Tumble aren’t casual road dogs, but they aren’t letting on, either. From their upbeat, commanding stage presence and sharp banter, to their earworm-inducing melodies and heartstring lyrics, this dumpster-folk/thriftstore Americana duo refuses to bring the haggard road-worn stereotype to their audience-- even though they’ve earned it. In fact, The Rough & Tumble have been elbowing out of most stereotypes.
Wilkes is an American musician, visual artist, author, filmmaker and self-proclaimed "southern surrealist". He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (notably on harmonica and banjo), having recorded with such artists as Merle Haggard, John Carter Cash, Mike Patton, and Hank Williams III. Wilkes’ latest solo album is called "Cattle in the Cane." JD Wilkes is perhaps best known as the founder of the Legendary Shack Shakers, a Southern Gothic-rock / blues-band formed in the mid-90s.
Tracing his roots to the hills and small towns of Eastern Kentucky’s coal country, Britton is a writer, instrumentalist, producer, and singer who draws from spiritual connections between people, places and times. Britton believes in the power of collaboration, having written, played with, or collaborated with Grammy-nominated Darrell Scott, former Johnny Cash band-mate and award-winning bassist Dave Roe, Grammy-nominated Verlon Thompson, and has produced works for Alabama songwriter Casey Lambert.
Abby Hamilton is a Kentucky born-and-raised country and folk-rock artist, with an ironic and sincere lyrical perspective. There’s a quiet power in her performance, easily bringing you to tears or into fist-pumping sing-alongs. She guides her listeners along with storytelling that ranges from hilarious tales of life in the working class, retelling of classic themes, and of course, good ol' country heartbreak.
Wayne Graham wants you to know one thing. They are a band, not a person. Two brothers who play rock music from the mountains of Kentucky, the band was formed in 2010 between Kenny and Hayden Miles. Wayne Graham is named after the brothers’ grandfathers, and tries to impart a sense of roots while also moving forward into the world.
Fans have often compared their sound to riding through the desert with the top down, or the feeling of being in some lonesome smoky bar off the side of an abandoned highway. Their most recent album “Lost on the Range” includes a mix of songs that take you on a journey through the wild west, out into the far reaches of the galaxy, into a bedroom filled with monsters, and down the interstate to a budget motel.
A singer-songwriter from near Cattletsburg, Kentucky, he now works full-time as a musician. His musical passion started as a young teen, when his dad bought him his first guitar in 8th grade. It was really his stepdad, Scott Sword, who encouraged his learning, and Cole credits him with being the real reason he started playing.
If Stoll Vaughan sounds familiar - thru music, if not the name – it might be because the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter’s efforts have been heard, but not necessarily identified, on major motion picture and network TV series soundtracks like True Blood, Shameless, Friday Night Lights and The Office. But Stoll hails from Lexington, Kentucky, and has been honored by his home state with the esteemed Kentucky Colonel award for public service. Since then he's stayed in Nashville and became embedded in its Americana scene, prior to hitting the road as an opening act for headliners Def Leppard and Journey in 2006 and 2007.
Memiss Jones is a unique artist of real good crude mountain soul music who loves to perform and entertain on a live stage! She performs with the highest of energy, the greatest of vibes, an up-beat personality, and real good music. With multiple albums out and a career spanning a decade, she’s got the experience and talent that’ll make you sit and listen.
Jangling Sparrows, headed by musical veterans Paul Edelman and Bobby Frith, have been hailed as having a “capacity for strong songs that tell a story and rock hard” (Glide Magazine). Of the newest album, IndiePulse says the songs are “visionary tracks”, and that Edelman “has an amazing way of turning words into magnifying glasses”. With stellar reviews becoming momentum, Jangling Sparrows are landing at Red Barn Radio, so don’t miss them!
Haunting, introspective, Cypress likes to set the scene with their voices, layering in their instruments as the song progresses. Ever since going to school together, this trio seeks to keep their music authentic and representative of something greater than themselves, perhaps encapsulated by the different genres you can hear in each song they play.
Hailed as having “wit, wisdom, and honesty” that allow him to tell stories through music, Don Rogers has amassed a following by creating something “uniquely Kentucky”. Joined by an all-star group of musicians (some of whom are Red Barn Radio alum themselves), they’ll weave their music into Roger’s stories and show us the perspective of someone who’s lived a rural American life.
Walter DeBarr is not a man who has ever played by the rules. But when he plays, everyone listening wants to join him. His music, influenced by early punk and his grandmother’s gospel music, and washed in years of whiskey, cigarettes, and rough living, carries listeners along on his journey to redemption and love. Walter is joined by his band, featuring Pamela Kesling, MacLean James, Cameron Miller, Steven Schumann, and J.D. Thomas. It’s a knockout night!
A student of jazz, Will is joined by two seasoned jazz musicians: Paul Deatherage and Ryan McGillicuddy. All three of these musicians have experience playing with many different jazz players, with Ryan taking his jazz overseas to places like Japan, Korea; Paul playing with orchestras, trios, and quartets; and Will playing with his peers at the University of North Texas and with the National Young Arts Jazz program.
Sasha Colette & The Magnolias are a powerhouse group, with hand-stitched songs and an electrified sound, they'll leave you wantin' more. Headed by Sasha Colette, a talented musician who has a lot of touring experience, you know this band will be able to put on a show. A little bit of rock, a little bit of soul, this group is gonna give us something to talk about!
The Lillys are a homegrown band, consisting of veteran musician John Lilly and his two sons. Together, this trio puts their own spin on traditional country, with chemistry that is bound by family. Having played with some of the staples of country and bluegrass, John Lilly’s experience as a performer means his sons have the the country genes too. You'll love this band!

This trio marries the sounds we love from bluegrass with a singer-songwriter feel, making their music both nostalgic and modern. They’re no stranger to Red Barn Radio’s stage, either, so this performance will be like a meeting of old friends. And the timing couldn’t be better; Hillhouse has recently announced that their album, “Silence Turns To Sound”, was set to release June 26, 2020 - two weeks after their recorded live performance on the Red Barn stage.

Senora May was born the fifth of six children to a frugal home nestled in hills of Kentucky. Her mother was a stained glass artist and her father a farmer who worked at an aluminum recycling plant. She was a tomboy, following suit of her brothers. Her youth was often spent romping in the woods, fishing, catching snakes, building fairy houses. The burn for music did not fully blossom until her late teens when she learned her first guitar chords. Prior to that, she had dabbled with fiddle, and even played classical flute for four years in her school band. Songwriting was a natural addition to the many mediums Senora accrued over years of creative expression. Her lyrics are built on a foundation of poetry from Appalachian folk culture, with heavy plays on alliteration and basic rhyme schemes, but the content is derived from the wild nature of Kentucky and is no less diverse. Senora has written songs about love, nature and the vitality of independence as a female growing and creating in a male-dominated habitat.

“Grackle” is an original 6-piece band based out of Louisville, Kentucky. Formed in 2015, they released their 10-song debut album, Wintergarden (Available through all major digital media outlets - e.g., iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody) in 2016. The band creates a style of music that is somewhat outside the mainstream (though might be described as “piano-driven indie rock”). Accessible melodies are couched in keyboard-driven compositions that twist-and-turn through dense arrangements and atmospheric interludes. The band is “proudly guitarless” and integrates cello, violin, saxophone, flute, and harp into their arrangements.

Bek started out singing and writing songs in a little Methodist Church in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. She has been performing with bands such as Kevin & Bek and Second Street Revival for over 10 years. Teamed with longtime songwriting partner Kevin Harmon, Bek writes honest songs about life, love, and heartache that come from the real life experiences of growing up deep in the heart of the Bible Belt. Formed when its members – Grant Curless, Wils Quinn, and Shawn Reynolds – were in their freshman year, Johnny Conqueroo’s early EP’s saw them writing long, grungy blues jams, spiraling in and out of swampy dirges as the band played what they felt, acting on instinct in a fervent rock’n’roll endeavor. The trio naturally shied from prototypical indie or hipster leanings, focusing instead on downtrodden street stories inspired by Southern surroundings. The forthcoming Haint Blue EP sees the band maturing and expanding without abandoning their roots. Challenged by producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Vandaveer) to pursue a collection of thematically similar material, Haint Blue tells an Appalachian tragedy of sorts, twining together stories of men and women in downward spirals , becoming homeless, being falsely accused of crimes and knocking on the door of purgatory like a ball of barbed wire.

"Laid-Back Country Picker is Lawrence County social studies teacher David Prince, a part-time musician who, at 52, is finally getting some big attention for his authentic love of his “fleet-maintained” Crown Victoria. The blonde woman is his wife, Teresa, also a teacher. The rollers are her own, the housecoat from Goodwill. The young man in back is a fellow musician, but you will see Prince’s son-in-law as one of the gym dancers “mowing” the lawn and Prince’s very pregnant, ebullient daughter dancing in a T-shirt bearing her father’s distinctive likeness. Lissy grew up in Trentham England until she moved in January 2015 to Lexington Kentucky USA at the age of 14. Lissy's first solo singing performance was aged 10 and it was then she discovered her passion for music. She obtained her first guitar at aged 13 and by the age of 14 started to perform guitar and vocals at open mics in Staffordshire and was invited to perform at the Young Musicians Spotlight, a charity organization. Lissy’s flair for creative writing also started from a young age and the move to the USA gave Lissy a wealth of new experiences and emotion to put in to her songs.

Taylor Hughes is a country/blues artist and singer-songwriter from Lexington, Kentucky but now resides in Franklin, Tennessee. She has been performing professionally for a little over 5 years now but got her "start" in Nashville on a TV comcast called "Nashville Spotlight." Award winning gospel singer and vocal coach, Christy Sutherland, has described Taylor's voice as "rich chocolate cake with soul." Taylor has been nominated multiple times for best female vocalist, singer-songwriter, song of year, and best country act for the Lexington Music awards. She was awarded best singer-songwriter and song of the year in 2016 and best female vocalist in 2018. Wolfenwife is Leslie and Lindsey Currey. Leslie was born and raised in Richmond, Kentucky. Since she was about seven she wanted to be a singer and songwriter after her dad played a Fleetwood Mac record. Since then her dad kept playing records and she just fell in love with learning how it all works. Lindsey comes from Lexington, Kentucky froma family with a musical background. Her grandfather was a known local musician in the 60s and 70s. Both she and Leslie both share the same love and appreciation for singer songwriters and have very similar influences in how they write. They have been writing music together for about six months

Eliza is an amazing 16 year old singer/songwriter from Lexington, Kentucky. She began playing guitar when she was 14, and has been writing songs ever since. In February of 2017, she released her first single, "Pillar of Salt", to rave reviews.

After a short period of honing her live performance skills in a backup role, powerhouse vocalist Joslyn Hampton assembled a team of ace musicians (Marty Charters, Steve Holloman, Smith Donaldson, Rashawn Fleming, Joe Carucci, and Jeffrey Doll) to form Joslyn & The Sweet Compression. Their original material, a hook-filled mix of funk and soul, is being released in a series of singles throughout 2018, supported by many live club dates and festival appearances.
This dynamic duo has joined forces to express their passion for a wide collection of musical genres complimentary of several generations. Steve Newbury grew up heavily influenced by the Motown era as well as several generations of Jazz music. Brett Higgins was also raised in a household full of Motown, gospel music, Classic Rock and much much more. A lot of what he does today he credits artists such as Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, etc. When performing live, this duo gives you a taste of feel good music at it's best. Brett knows how to captivate the audience as he commands the audience attention much like his favorite entertainer, Michael Jackson.
The Jeff Richey Experience (JRE) is a quartet of seasoned bluegrass, folk, jazz, and rock musicians based in Berea, Kentucky, who are dedicated to performing and recording original music composed by bassist, lead vocalist, and bandleader Jeff Richey. Jeff (a native of Savannah, Georgia) is Professor of Asian Studies, and Mike (a native of Kalida, Ohio) is Professor of Political Science, at Berea College. Robert (a native of Lexington, Virginia) is an alum of Berea College who played with Jeff in the Berea-based acoustic quartet Mud Pi from 2009 through 2012. Randall is a Berea native and longtime roots musician in the region. After Jeff narrowly survived a near-fatal car accident in 2013, he decided to concentrate on performing original music from then on, organizing the first iteration of The JRE on October 24, 2013 with Mike, Robert, and then-Berea faculty member Jason Coomes on lead guitar, with whom the first three JRE albums were recorded. It was Coomes who suggested the self-parodying name “The Jeff Richey Experience,” based on the band’s founding purpose. After Coomes’ departure in late 2015, tenor saxophonist and then-EKU faculty member Zip Irvin joined up, recording the band’s 4th and 5th albums (and parts of its 6th album) before departing in late 2017. Longtime Berea area roots musician and co-proprietor of Berea’s Music Makers (instrument shop and recording studio) Randall Conn, a member of the regionally-renowned bluegrass band Blind Ricky who engineered the previous 5 albums, joined up on banjo, dobro, and steel guitar in late 2017. This third and most recent iteration of The JRE recently completed its 6th album, now available on Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes, and Spotify, and will perform next at Noodle Nirvana in Berea on April 21. The group has performed regularly in clubs, festivals, and on radio in central Kentucky since 2014
Travis Lee Kern is a Kentucky-based songwriter and recording artist who draws upon his Southwest Virginia coalfield roots to bring to life the colorful characters and places of the mountains that are so much a part of him. His debut album, comes highly recommended by No Depression and is described as “a heartfelt no-gimmicks folk/country enterprise that will appeal across the spectrum.”
Kentucky-based recording artist Jim Gleason is a musical omnivore whose interests range from rock and blues to jazz and swing to country and bluegrass. Recent releases include Last Fish Standing and Deconstruction Ahead, on which he composes, arranges, produces, sings and plays guitar, bass, pedal and lap steel, dobro and mandolin. Scott Whiddon writes and performs with Palisades (http://palisades.bandcamp.com) and has developed film scores for Richard Knox Robinson and Brian Frye/Katrina Dixon. From 2012-2016, Scott served as music director for Lexington’s Harry Dean Stanton Fest . In a parallel universe, Dr. Gleason is an Associate Professor of Public Relations at Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Whiddon serves as Writing Center Director and Associate Professor of Writing, Rhetoric, and Communication at Transylvania University.
Ralph Curtis & The Nashville Impostors have performed together approx 6 years. We are called The Impostors because we impersonate several singers. We originally formed as strictly as Johnny Cash Tribute band. Since then, we have branched off and have toured the South East U.S. and East Coast performing not only a tribute to Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Glen Campbell, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, CCR, Hank Williams Sr.
Luna and the Mountain Jets is an Appalachian rock band from Eastern Kentucky. The core of the group is the husband and wife team of Teresa (guitar vocals) and Dave Prince (guitar/vocals). As a duo, they draw material from their three CDs of original songs, which ranges from electric folk to Americana/twang rock. They also add drums for some performances as well as offering a full four-piece band on occasion. Luna is at home at a house concert, intimate coffeehouse, or opening for national touring acts like the Kentucky Headhunters, Marshall Tucker, and Larry Cordle.
Wicked Peace draws from a range of influences as seemingly disparate as the band members themselves to create a singular sound that hints at their Appalachian roots without being beholden to them. The group is just as at home unplugged in an intimate folky setting letting their natural harmonies fly as they are in a boozy nightclub cranked to 11 letting their instruments do their persuading. In 2013, frontman Tanner Blevins and guitarist Patrick Brumback shared a Morehead State dorm room hallway and musical dreams, and their combined ambitions birthed the band in earnest. Cutting their teeth with their earliest live gigs, they followed this up with 2015’s self-effacingly titled Growing Pain, which found their sound and focus sharpening as their ambitions grew
