Harvest is a stressful time of year for all involved. Between harvesting the crop, countless hours in the field, equipment breakdowns, and keeping track of grain, the jobs are endless. After being buried in scale tickets at her kitchen table year after year, Peggy Meyer knew there had to be a better way. And that's why she became the Co-Founder of Field Pocket, a harvest solutions software. Autonomous agricultural machines and robots are making their way into commercial markets with basic functionality, such as autonomous navigation, and the ability to execute low-risk operations. In this episode we welcome Dr. Sierra Young from Utah State University and Dr. Santosh Pitla from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln to the FarmBits podcast. These two researchers are working to advance autonomous functionality and envision next generation applications for autonomous machines and robotics in agriculture. Dr. Young has experience working in a diverse range of agricultural systems from pine production to shellfish aquaculture and her research tends to focus on concepts that are far from commercial production. Dr. Pitla, on the other hand, manages an applied research program that investigates technologies that are only a few steps away from practical implementation. His experience is primarily in commodity row crop production systems. Both of these researchers offer tremendous perspectives on autonomous technology, existing gaps that must be addressed, and how the public and private sectors can work together to push autonomy forward. Precision conservation is an emerging technique in digital agriculture that uses spatial data to inform decisions about where to implement conservation practices and potentially which conservation practices would be most beneficial. Dr. Andrew "Andy" Little, Assistant Professor and Landscape and Habitat Management Extension Specialist, joins this FarmBits episode to provide an overview of precision conservation and discuss the work that he and his lab team are doing to further conservation practices using digital agriculture. In this episode we are joined by Dr. Ty Schmidt, Associate Professor of Animal Science and graduate student Haley Beer to discuss an innovative use of artificial intelligence-linked camera sensors and their use in monitoring animal behavior. The NUtrack system was developed at the University of Nebraska. This technology is used to generate behavioral baselines customized to individual animals with the goal of detecting deviations that could help with early identification of disease. Potato production is very complex and requires intensive management to produce high quality potatoes for use in consumer packaged goods. A significant part of producing high quality potatoes is pest management. Seth Gurley, Agronomist at CSS Farms' Columbus, NE, location, and Jesse Ziems, Senior Agronomist for CSS Farms' Nebraska operations, join us on this episode of the FarmBits podcast to discuss the complexities of potato protection and how they are leveraging digital tools and advanced technology to help them combat pest pressure across the CSS Farms operation and specifically at the Columbus, NE, location. Some of the many technologies that they are leveraging in advanced crop protection practices are the Prospera pivot-mounted camera system, Taranis, and Canopio (a crop canopy quantification tool). Spray application technology for aerial applicators and ground application equipment has advanced substantially over the past few decades, particularly concerning rate control and application resolution. Sam Marx, Ph.D. student at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and former engineer at Capstan Ag, joins this episode of the FarmBits podcast to discuss all things spray technology. Taking preventative measures before disease infects crops is critical to protecting crop yields, but applying fungicide when disease threats are not significant decreases profitability. But is it possible to know if a disease threat is present in your fields? Measuring nitrogen, particularly plant available forms of nitrogen, in the soil in near real-time is a critical missing link furthering nitrogen management in agricultural production systems. Dr. Jonathan Claussen, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University, joins us for this episode to discuss measuring nitrogen in the soil. His research team has been working in collaboration with a research team at the University of Florida to develop and test soil nitrogen sensors. The sensors they have developed rely on an ion-selective membrane and communicate via telemetry. In this episode, we discuss ion selective membrane technology, the challenges of sensing nitrogen in the soil environment, and what is necessary to translate and commercialize technologies that have been developed for biomedical applications (e.g. ion-selective membranes) for agriculture. Remote sensing, such as capturing imagery via cameras mounted on UAVs, has attracted significant attention in the contemporary digital agriculture landscape. While there are ample commercial offerings for remotely sensed data, there are few - if any - commercially available platforms offering actionable agronomic decisions from remotely sensed data. In this episode, the FarmBits team has flipped the script and put your normal hosts - Samantha and Jackson - on the other side of the mic to discuss their graduate research which has involved leveraging remote sensing data for near real-time, in-season nitrogen management. Active sensors - whether mounted on the boom of a high-clearance applicator or used to assess crop health manually - are one tool available to help quantify the nitrogen status of a growing crop.
