In this episode, Chris speaks with Dr. Johnny Guimaraes, Vice President of Information Technology and Data Analytics at Thriving Mind South Florida. Johnny discusses his journey of leadership and how he ended up where he is now while sticking to his morals.

Johnny’s adventure to becoming a Vice President at Thriving Mind came with many ups and downs. However, it is due to his morals and strict belief that doors would open for him that got him to his position now. Right after undergrad, Johnny found his first mentor at his first job at an insurance company. His mentor here always pushed Johnny to become better, stick to his morals, and gain more experience. This mindset is what fast tracked Johnny’s future endeavors.

A couple jobs later, Johnny’s decision making skills and morals were truly put to the test. In this role, Johnny would do what was morally right or turn a blind eye to things against his morals. This became a daunting decision given that it would mean speaking out against a superior. Johnny stuck to his morals and realized this was the correct decision as he was rewarded later when he least expected it.

Through experiences like this, Johnny is confident in his ability to do what he does best and to help others. As an adjunct professor at Miami Dade College, he teaches his students and others the importance of morals. He also emphasizes the importance of leading with morality because that is what other people will notice. One of his other biggest pieces of advice is to stay humble as humility goes a long way.

As Johnny continues inspiring the next generation, Johnny leaves us with one thing: be open to any door that opens or closes. As long as you stick by your morals and stay humble, doors will open for you. He joins us now to share how he confronts his morals through all leadership positions he’s been in and how the next generation can do the same.

About this Episode

In this week’s episode, Chris speaks with Dr. Matthew Pollard, Vice President of Intermountain Continuous Development at Intermountain Healthcare. Matthew discusses his journey to discover his passion for leadership and how he uses continuous kindness to inspire others.

Throughout Matthew’s childhood and later in life, he found mentorship and guidance from surgeons in his community. These figures inspired Matthew to pursue a career in medicine while helping others the way they helped him. Matthew learned how to align his priorities with his values from his mentors. As such, he began his career as an emergency department physician not only seeking to treat but to lead. From the early phases of his leadership journey, Matt sought to become a similarly reliable mentor for others.

For Matthew, the path to becoming a leader was not a straight or easy one. At each step of his career, Matthew sought to fine-tune best practices and processes while ensuring patients are the top priority. His dedication to patients came with strong opinions, and, sometimes, they were seen as aggressive. Instead of taking this personally, Matthew realized there may be something that he needs to change to accomplish his goals. He’s used lessons from this experience to teach and inspire others to become more self-aware while uplifting one another.

No longer directly treating patients as a physician, Matthew’s role is to continuously improve healthcare operations. His aim is now to inspire those in the healthcare industry to have humility in leadership, respect for every individual, and inspire the next generation. Matthew follows these cardinal principles throughout his personal and professional life. He joins us now to share his journey of inspiration and now joins us on the Virtuous Heroes Podcast to share his experiences.

In this week's episode, Chris speaks with Spencer Clancy, the System Director for Talent Development and Culture for CHRISTUS Health. Spencer talks about the impact mentors have had on his career trajectory. Watch to learn how important mentors are to creating the next generation of leaders.

Spencer has had many mentors throughout his life both spiritual and professional. He met his first mentor during graduate school who helped him land an internship. This opportunity allowed him to pursue what he wanted to do later in his career. Through the amazing mentoring of this individual, he went into his first leadership position at The Vincit Group.

From there, he met an individual working as a leader at CHRISTUS Health, and they talked about their career paths. It was because of this conversation that he was offered an opportunity at CHRISTUS HEALTH. Even though he couldn’t commit to the job at the time he was still amazed at the organization’s leaders. When he was given another chance to join the company he didn’t hesitate to accept.

It was at CHRISTUS HEALTH that he met his two new mentors, Lisa Reynolds and Karen Hale. These two leaders showed Spencer what true leadership was through example. They taught Spencer that his initial thoughts on leadership were completely different from true leadership. These leaders always put their teams first and were consistently there for their teams. Spencer used the insights he learned from his mentors for his first formal leadership position at CHRISTUS HEALTH.

Spencer found that this leadership style applied to more than just leaders in the professional world. He eventually saw faith as more than just something he learned at school. This was possible through the help of his spiritual mentor, Josh. He helped Spencer look deeply into his faith and to read scripture solely because he wanted to know more. Spencer hopes to do the same for other individuals who are in the same situation. Now, he joins us on the Virtuous Heroes Podcast to talk with us. His insights will allow viewers to become true leaders by learning the importance of mentoring.

Watch to learn how to implement Marcelle’s G.R.A.C.E. framework into your life and become a more inclusive leader.

When Marcelle was young, she moved to Brooklyn with her family and experienced some prominent racial clashes of the time. She explains the importance of this G.R.A.C.E. model by sharing a moment in her life when she was able to help bring one of her past leaders to an inclusive mindset. She explained that the leader did not refer to women as doctors even if they had their doctoral degrees and that he was giving her feedback that was not connected to her work but rather to his assumptions of her character. By explaining this she was able to widen his perspective and go on to help others with her G.R.A.C.E system.

He has testified on Capitol Hill, engaged the White House on a host of issues, and appeared on major networks such as CNN, NPR, and C-SPAN, and in national print media as an influential voice on policy and government accountability. He was selected by HillVets as among the 100 Most Influential Persons in 2016 and one of the Mighty 25 Military Influencers by “We Are The Mighty” in 2020.

He turned to Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), the advocacy organization founded by returning WWII service members with spinal cord injuries, for support in re-entering the job market after his SCI. Not only did he find a career he enjoys - and return to school for a master's degree - but, today Sherman is PVA's Associate Executive Director for Veterans Benefits, overseeing field services, vocational rehabilitation services, and architecture services.

He reflects upon the extraordinary courage and determination he mustered on his path to recovery, being able to reach out for help and not only survive, but become that person who can extend a helping hand.

In this week’s episode, Chris speaks with HR extraordinaire Mary LaFrancois, Division VP of Human Resources for Ardent Health Services, on ways leaders can help employees grow and achieve their full potential. As a leader, Mary and Chris believe that it’s better to “train people and have them leave you than not train them and have them stay.”

Mary’s approach to leadership emphasizes making the employees “want” to come to work by making them feel validated and contributing a tangible difference in their work. Drawing from her own experience, Mary encouraged people to let their bosses know when they are ready for the next step in their careers so they can continue to challenge themselves and grow as an employee and leader. According to Mary, the key to encouraging workers to invest in their career ambitions and “feel good” about their career is to take an individualized approach to each person, set up reasonable deadlines and workloads, and find a balance between pushing too hard and not pushing hard enough.

As leaders, it is our responsibility to create a positive and healthy environment and allow employees to fully exploit their passion and ambition.

Additional Bio:

Mary LaFrancois is a seasoned executive coach focusing on transformational leadership development with an eye on the rapidly changing environments. In her coaching, Mary has a sincere, straightforward approach and sees herself as the client’s thinking partner, helping to create new awareness around blind spots which impact their effectiveness as a leader. By coaching the person, instead of the problem, Mary aims to create an ideal environment for clients to experience breakthroughs and obtain massive traction on their most important work. Mary also firmly believes clients can create more desired results and positive energy focusing on the future, rather than the past. She finds a balance between challenging growth and supporting goals, while also customizing the coaching experience to meet each client’s needs.

From 2002 to 2015, Mary worked as Vice President of Human Resources at CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, the largest hospital system in South Texas, with 6 hospital campuses and 7 family health centers. She engaged the leadership team, delivered strategic and operational human resources leadership, and directed 8 direct reports and 70 indirect reports. She also administered a $7 million budget/annual recruitment budget of $1.2 million and oversaw HR functions, including employee education, employee health, staffing resources, childcare, medical library, and patient experience.

"Within my well-researched body of work, I've created links between individual career agility and workforce agility, two essential behaviors for thriving in a world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The flexible agility model enables individuals and organizations to better assess fluid circumstances with the goal of adapting to change in a strategic manner. According to my research, the agility mindset can be learned and is one of the most needed power skills in the workplace today. Organizations require agility thinkers to move their organizations forward, especially in times of disruption and uncertainty. Job seekers and the employers who hire them benefit from the nimble and forward-thinking approach of those who forge the future and cultivate agility, rather than stop in their tracks via stagnation. The World Economic Forum when referring to organizational resilience in response to the pandemic, mentioned, "When asked about “being more agile”, having fluid teams and workers with broad skill sets were most important to companies – above agile work practices, or agile organization design." Contact me for keynote speeches, training, and coaching: 👉 Job search strategies for mid-careerists in a time of change 👉 Agility skills training for individuals and teams 👉 Personal brand development for individuals, teams, and leadership with organizations My processes and exercises will help you cultivate observation skills, flex your personal agility muscle, and develop adaptability intelligence for your job search or business strategies."

We need Christ-followers to understand that just because your title does not say ‘supervisor’ or ‘CEO,’ that does not mean you are not a leader. You have the ability to transform the culture around you.”
