Today on Culture Clique, its part 2 of the Bunnel House, and we take you back the 1850's as we visit one of Winona's historical places, the Bunnel House. Constructed of north white pine, the Bunnel House is an outstanding example of rural gothic architecture. The homeowner, Willard Bunnel, was granted permission to build his home on Dakota land at what is now, Homer Minnesota. Mr. Bunnel was a trapper, fur-trader, and a strong wielded man. As history reveals itself, we learn the truth of Mr. Bunnel, his family, and what makes this house so unique. The Oak Center General Store, as the name implies, is more than a music venue, it’s also a general store, much like your grandparents might remember or like you might see in an old movie. It has also been home to a woodshop and has been the storefront for Earthen Path Organic Farms. The building has housed a general store and community meeting room since it’s construction in 1913 and it’s doors where only closed for 6 short years in the 1970s. In other words, this place has been open and operating for nearly one-hundred and ten years. If you aren’t yet aware of the Oak Center General Store, then you are in for a treat. The hike started at Latsch Beach, went across the wagon bridge and through Aghaming Park and Reserve. A few years ago, one Winona resident decided to do something to help families in need get through the holidays. Living in a river town like Winona means plenty of opportunities for enjoying the outdoors and viewing a variety of wildlife. Whether you like to hike the local trails, kayak the backwaters of the Mississippi, or enjoy some time in Levee park, Winona has something to offer for everyone. But living on the river next to such natural beauty also means that we must be good stewards and take care of the natural resources around us. The city of Winona has an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to do just that in an area called Aghaming Park and Reserve. Aghaming is enjoyed by many for fishing, kayaking or canoeing and it is especially good for birding. Today we hear from Richie Swanson, president of the Winona Bird Club about Aghaming Park and Reserve and the agreement between the city and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service. The bluffs around the Mississippi River in southeast Minnesota are a beautiful place to live. The bluff country is full of beautiful scenery and wildlife and is even home to some threatened species and one of those species has been getting a lot of attention lately. That species is the timber rattlesnake. There has been an increased number of reports of timber rattlers in the bluffs around Winona. So many in fact, that the city of Winona held a public meeting with MN DNR officials to discuss the issue. I spoke with Nongame Wildlife Specialist Michael Worland from the MN DNR to find out a little more about timber rattlers and what to do if you encounter one.
