For 20 years I was a chocolatier; working in the magic and mystery of the liquid crystal medium we call “chocolate”. Then I became a yoga teacher and manual therapist, specialising in soft tissue (fascia), learning (for the next 20 years) that we have an inner matrix that is also a liquid crystal medium. As a storyteller, full of wonder and curiosity about how this magical, living architecture of each unique human form works, I was fascinated to write “YOGA: Fascia, Anatomy and Movement”. I learned we each express our own matrix our own way; archetypally. It led me via many scientists, researchers, clients and curious fellow beings, to presenting around the world from the leading edge of this fascinating field. How do fascia and biotensegrity (the geometry of our form) help us to move better, feel better and enjoy more? I will be talking to some of those experts and sharing some experiences from the thousands of movement and manual sessions I have done and hours I have spent in the anatomy laboratory; exploring how fascia (our self-assembled inner matrix) reveals its secrets. We don’t always know the code, but since the magic is sometimes in the mystery, the stories help us to better understand pain (to remove it) and performance (to improve it), in our own unique (and archetypal) ways.
What if the model we've used to explain the human body could never stand up on its own?
In this episode of Sacred Geometry, Joanne explores the remarkable work of Tom Flemons, whose human tensegrity models challenged centuries of conventional biomechanics. Inspired by Kenneth Snelson and Buckminster Fuller, Flemons spent decades building physical demonstrations of the body's living architecture, revealing a model based on continuity rather than isolated parts.
You'll discover:
This episode brings Sacred Geometry directly into the human body and lays the foundation for the next chapter of the series, where Joanne explores Donald Ingber's groundbreaking research into tensegrity at the level of the living cell.
If these ideas resonate with you, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley teach you about fascia, movement, anatomy and Sacred Geometry in depth through the Myofascial Magic in Action programme. Find out more here.

What happens when someone gives a name to something that has always existed?
Buckminster Fuller didn't invent tensegrity, but by naming it, he gave the world a new way of seeing. In this episode of the Sacred Geometry series, Joanne explores how Fuller's remarkable work connected architecture, engineering, biology and the living human body through one universal principle…
From geodesic domes and “Spaceship Earth” to carbon molecules, fascia and human movement, this episode reveals why Fuller's ideas continue to reshape our understanding of living architecture today.
You'll discover:
This episode continues the journey from Leonardo da Vinci and Kenneth Snelson, exploring how a single word - tensegrity - helped reveal one of nature's most profound organising principles. It also lays the foundation for the next episode, where Joanne introduces Tom Flemons and his groundbreaking work applying these ideas directly to the human body.
If this way of understanding the body resonates with you, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley teach these principles through their online programme, Myofascial Magic in Action. This in-depth course brings together fascia, movement, anatomy, and Sacred Geometry to help practitioners, movers, and curious learners experience the living body in an entirely new way.

What if the missing piece in understanding the human body was discovered by a sculptor?
In this episode Joanne explores the extraordinary life and work of Kenneth Snelson, the artist whose remarkable discovery of floating compression transformed the way we understand structure, movement, and the living body.
Working from curiosity rather than convention, Snelson built a simple sculpture that revealed a profound truth: living forms are not held together by stacked parts, but by a continuous relationship between tension and compression. His insight became the missing piece that helped shape modern ideas of tensegrity, fascia, and living architecture.
You'll discover:
More than the story of a sculptor, this is an invitation to see yourself differently. Kenneth Snelson's work reminds us that the human body is not a machine assembled from separate pieces, but a living, self-organising architecture whose intelligence has been quietly present all along.
If this way of understanding the body resonates with you, and you'd like to explore it in depth, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley teach these principles through their online programme, Myofascial Magic in Action (MMIA). This in-depth course brings together fascia, movement, anatomy, and Sacred Geometry to help practitioners, movers, and curious learners experience the living body in an entirely new way.

What did Leonardo da Vinci see that the rest of the world missed?
In the second episode of this new Sacred Geometry series, Joanne explores the extraordinary quality of attention that allowed Leonardo da Vinci to perceive the human body in a way that science would not begin to explain for another 500 years.
Long before the language of fascia, tensegrity, or living architecture existed, Leonardo was asking different questions. Through meticulous observation, fearless curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to direct experience, he revealed patterns of proportion, movement, and organisation that continue to shape our understanding of the living body today.
You'll discover:
More than a historical figure, Leonardo becomes an invitation: to observe with fresh eyes, to question inherited assumptions, and to rediscover the remarkable intelligence already present within the living human body.
This episode continues Joanne's exploration of the remarkable people whose insights have helped illuminate the living fascial matrix, the hidden geometry of nature, and what it truly means to live in a human body.

What does it mean to truly say, “Thank you for having me”?
In this deeply personal opening episode of a new series, Joanne Avison reflects on the final hours recently spent with her mother, Stephani, and the profound sense of gratitude that emerged.
What begins as a story about her passing becomes a tribute to connection, to family, to love and the invisible architecture that shapes a life. Joanne traces the lessons passed down through generations, from an adored grandfather and a thoughtful father to a remarkable mother whose influence will continue in the lives she shaped around her.
You’ll hear:
Although this series is more personal than Joanne's usual teaching, it remains deeply connected to the themes that have shaped her work for decades. Just as fascia folds, unfolds, adapts, and develops its own unique architecture, so too do the patterns of our lives. This series explores the people, experiences, and relationships that were being written into us long before we knew how to read them…
The first of four short episodes, Thank You For Having Me is Joanne's tribute and exploration of the patterns, relationships, and experiences that shaped her life, and an invitation to reflect on your own.
Thank you for being here. And, as always, thank you for having me. 🙏

In this final episode of the Sacred Geometry mini-series, Joanne explores the dodecahedron: the geometry of ether, the fifth element, and the archetypal pattern of wholeness that underlies all living form.
Drawing together the themes of the entire series, Joanne reveals how the dodecahedron contains the golden ratio within every face, how it relates to self-organisation, completion, and living presence, and why ancient traditions considered it the geometry of the cosmos itself…
You’ll discover:
From fascia and physiology to Vedic mathematics, the Flower of Life, and the hidden patterns found throughout nature, this episode brings the journey full circle and lays the foundation for the next stage of exploration.
This is the concluding episode of the first Sacred Geometry series, exploring the five Platonic solids and their relationship to fascia, embodiment, human architecture, and the deeper intelligence of life itself.

What is the simplest structure the body can form… and why does it matter for movement, fascia, and transformation?
Joanne continues this popular new Sacred Geometry mini-series by exploring the first true three-dimensional form: the tetrahedron.
Following on from the previous episode on zero, this conversation moves from potential into form. Joanne explains how four points create the first possible volume in space, and why this shape is not just mathematical, but deeply relevant to the living body… In fact, the tetrahedron is a foundational pattern of structure, transformation, and organisation within fascia and movement.
You’ll discover:
Drawing on anatomy, embryology, tensegrity, and somatic awareness, Joanne connects the tetrahedron to how the body actually forms, moves, and responds in real life.
This episode is part of an ongoing sacred geometry series, where each instalment explores one of the five platonic solids and its relevance to the human body, movement, and embodied awareness.

What is the missing link between fascia and form… and how does sacred geometry help us understand the body more clearly?
Following the popularity of previous episodes on this topic, and in response to so many questions from you, this new mini-series revisits sacred geometry in a deeper way. Join Joanne as she explores the fascinating geometric principles that underpin the human body, beginning with the concept of zero, the often-overlooked starting point from which all form emerges.
Rather than treating geometry as abstract theory, Joanne shows how it reflects the way the body actually forms and organises itself. Through a fascia-focused lens, sacred geometry becomes a living language of structure, movement, and awareness.

What if moving well isn’t about doing more… but feeling more?
In this episode Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley explore the final step in their five-part fascia-focused prehab approach to movement. This conversation brings the series together by challenging one of the biggest assumptions in training: that repetition and effort lead to better movement. Instead, refinement is revealed as something far more powerful, the ability to perceive, adjust, and organise movement in real time.
This episode includes exclusive practical demonstrations from inside their practitioner training, showing how subtle changes in position, timing, and awareness can instantly transform strength, coordination, and control.
You’ll learn:
This is especially relevant for personal trainers, Pilates and yoga teachers, therapists, and anyone interested in biomechanics, fascia, and embodied movement who wants to improve performance while reducing injury risk.

What if true restoration isn’t about rest… but restoring your body’s ability to move, adapt, and perform?
In this episode Joanne and Paul explore restoration, the fourth step in their 5-step fascia-focused approach, and share exclusive video demonstrations from their practitioner training - so you may prefer to watch this on the Joanne Avison YouTube channel - although there's still plenty to be gained here!
Restoration is about rebuilding your capacity to move well over time. Without it, even strong, capable bodies gradually lose options and become more restricted, often without realising it.
Learn how simple but precise movement explorations help restore coordination, improve transitions between positions, and prepare the body for the unpredictable demands of real life, not just controlled environments.
This is especially relevant for movement teachers, personal trainers, and therapists who want to move beyond repetition and performance, and instead build long-term resilience, adaptability, and efficiency in the body.

Why mechanical thinking breaks movement, and how Recoil restores adaptability, resilience, and real-world function in the body.
After such a great reaction to their recent episode about Rebound, Joanne and Paul return with the second instalment in this mini-series exploring the Five R’s of myofascial motion, again sharing exclusive demonstration videos from inside their practitioner training!
So you may prefer to hop on over to the Joanne Avison YouTube channel to watch this one 📺 (Although if you'd prefer to listen you'll still get plenty of goodness here.)
This time they explore Recoil as a foundational principle for building true body resilience. Moving beyond the idea of the body as a system of levers, they show why traditional, position-based training often fails once movement leaves the controlled environment of the studio.
Using practical demonstrations from the Myofascial Magic training programme, they reveal how the body actually organises itself through instability, variability, and counter-rotation.
You’ll see how recoil underpins natural gait, how narrow and unstable positions develop deeper coordination, and why strength alone doesn’t guarantee efficient movement. This is a shift from controlling the body to working with its inherent intelligence.
This episode is especially relevant for movement teachers and manual therapists looking to bridge the gap between controlled training and real-world application, and to deepen their understanding of fascia-focused, adaptive movement.

For the first time ever Joanne and Paul share real movement training clips from inside the Myofascial Magic In Action practitioner course! 🌟
This exclusive episode explores why strength and stability alone actually don’t create efficient movement, and introduces Rebound as the key to moving without strain. Joanne and Paul illustrate this beautifully with visual clips of their Rebound exercises, offering a rare look at how this work is applied in practice with professionals.
So you may prefer to hop on over to the Joanne Avison YouTube channel to watch this one! 📺 (Although if you'd prefer to listen you'll still get plenty of goodness here.)
It’s an illuminating insight into how small, precise changes can transform the way the body moves and organises itself…
They challenge the idea that the body should be trained for rigidity, instead showing how adaptable, responsive movement reduces stress and improves function. Through simple micro-movement explorations using a ball, narrow bases, and low-load positions, they demonstrate how to restore natural spring, improve transitions, and move with greater ease and confidence.

Why lever mechanics don’t explain human movement.
In this episode, Joanne explores the limitations of the biomechanical idea that joints act as simple levers. Drawing on fascia science and anatomical observation, she explains why the human body cannot be accurately understood through linear mechanical models.
Many traditional explanations of movement rely on engineering concepts such as levers, pin joints, and mechanical chains. But living bodies are not built like machines! Joanne describes how the architecture of the body is fundamentally non-linear, tubular, and spiral in organisation, shaped by fascia and the dynamics of living tissue rather than rigid mechanical structures.
Through insightful and playful reflections on the confusing language often used to describe movement, this conversation invites a deeper look at how we understand human motion. If the body is not built on levers, what does that mean for anatomy, movement practice, and manual therapy?

Is the human skeleton really linear — or is that a fundamental misunderstanding of anatomy?
In this episode, Joanne responds to a detailed YouTube comment that raises important questions about fascia, skeletal organisation, and so-called “linear” underlying structure of the bones. What follows is not a disagreement of style, but a clear challenge to biological inaccuracies that are commonly repeated in movement and manual therapy circles.
Are bones straight?
Is working to soften the tissue an advantage to everyone?
And does it always automatically restore function?
Drawing on extensive fascia research, laboratory experience, embryology and lived movement experience, Joanne unpacks why the idea of a linear skeleton collapses under scrutiny and why misunderstanding this matters for anyone involved a movement or manual practice, therapy and teaching.
This is a grounded exploration of anatomy, not a metaphor or a promotion. A reminder that living bodies are non-linear, adaptive, self-organising and unique. And that humans are not standardised mechanical frames waiting to be corrected.
If you care about fascia science, skeletal structure, functional anatomy and embodied awareness, this conversation will sharpen your thinking. It will also, no doubt, invite more questions - which are always welcome.

How regulation emerges through sensation, awareness, and relational feedback, not force or control.
In this final episode of the five-part series on fascia, embodiment, and practical spirituality, Joanne explores the relationship between fascia and the nervous system, and how inner regulation can arise through lived, embodied experience, rather than necessarily needing to use conscious effort or technique.
Drawing on fascia science, somatic awareness, and relational regulation, this conversation looks at how safety, coherence, and resilience are cultivated through sensation, rhythm, and connection. Rather than trying to “manage” the nervous system, the episode invites a subtler understanding of how regulation emerges naturally when awareness is allowed to organise the system from within.
This closing episode weaves together the key themes of the series, offering a grounded perspective on inner peace as an embodied process shaped through movement, perception, and relationship, not willpower or control.
If this series has resonated, you’re warmly invited to share your reflections.

How does the body organise itself into movement, perception and awareness? In this episode, Joanne explores fascia as living geometry — not symbolic or abstract, but the organising architecture of embodied awareness…
Building on the previous episode about the energetic body, this conversation looks at sacred geometry as a biological reality rather than a spiritual overlay. Joanne reflects on fascia as a self-organising, responsive field through which structure, sensation and meaning continually arise.
From embryology to movement, from breath to healing, fascia reveals a non-linear intelligence that adapts and reorganises when awareness and safety are present — beyond mechanical models of the body.
🌀 Part of the Fascia & Spirituality series
This episode is part of a five-part series exploring how fascia shapes perception, emotional experience and inner organisation.

How fascia connects the energetic body, embodied awareness, and spiritual awakening — explored through lived, sensory experience.
In this episode, Joanne explores the energetic body through the living lens of fascia, embodiment, and direct experience. Rather than treating spirituality as something abstract or separate from the body, this conversation invites a grounded understanding of awakening as something sensed, relational, and embodied.
The episode reflects on fascia as a responsive field that shapes perception, movement, and inner organisation. From embryology to adult self-awareness, it explores how awareness arises through sensation, rhythm, and relationship, not effort or control.
This is episode three in a five-part series exploring fascia and practical spirituality, examining how the body communicates before thought and how subtle awareness can reshape how we inhabit ourselves.
This conversation will resonate with those interested in fascia science, somatic practice, embodied spirituality, and approaches to healing rooted in listening rather than technique.

Biomotional intelligence describes how the body senses, adapts and responds before thought or analysis…
In this episode, Joanne explores how awareness, fascia and lived experience shape the body’s innate intelligence in everyday life. She looks at biomotional intelligence not as a concept to understand, but as something to practice. Through embodied awareness, presence and subtle listening, the body reveals meaning that cannot be reduced to data, mechanics or emotional labels.
Drawing on fascia therapy, somatic practice and contemplative traditions, Joanne reflects on how sensing precedes thinking, and how over-analysis can interrupt the body’s natural capacity to organise, adapt and respond.
This episode is part two of a five-part series exploring the relationship between fascia, embodiment and spirituality, created in response to your questions and growing interest in how the body communicates beyond purely mechanical models.
This conversation will be especially relevant for those interested in embodied practice, somatic therapy, mindfulness, fascia science and the cultivation of inner awareness.
If this episode resonates, you are warmly invited to share your reflections in the comments on Spotify or on the Joanne Avison YouTube channel.

Does fascia store emotional experience - or is there something more nuanced at play?
Drawing on somatic healing, bodywork therapy and fascia science, Joanne looks at how our perceptions and emotional landscape influence our body’s tissue over time. But rather than framing fascia as something that simply “stores trauma,” she invites a more nuanced view of this incredible tissue as a dynamic, responsive field reflecting how we live, the way we move and what we feel.
You’ll also hear how embodiment practice and cultivating aware presence can lead to subtle yet powerful shifts in body organisation — offering pathways for healing, integration, and change.
🌀 This is the first in a new five-part series exploring the potent links between fascia, embodiment, and spirituality — created in response to your messages, questions, and growing interest in how the body adapts, remembers and responds beyond purely mechanical models.
It will be especially relevant for bodyworkers, movement teachers, therapists and anyone interested in embodied healing, holistic health and integrative bodywork.

Joanne is joined by clinical anatomist John Sharkey to unpack why stretching, fascia and strength are so often misunderstood in modern fitness, rehabilitation and movement training. Together they examine how misread science can lead to harmful assumptions about flexibility, myofascial release and long-term tissue health.
The conversation centres on a widely discussed research paper on long-duration static stretching and strength. Joanne and John carefully clarify what the study does and does not show, exploring why increases in muscle girth do not automatically equate to functional strength, and how neural adaptation, fluid shifts and injury repair are often mistaken for true training effects.
They discuss fascia science, biomechanics, functional movement and therapeutic exercise through a clinical lens, highlighting the dangers of extrapolating extreme laboratory conditions into everyday practice. This episode challenges common flexibility myths and reframes stretching as a question of physiology, neurology and context, not force or endurance.
This conversation will be especially relevant for movement teachers, physiotherapists, manual therapists, trainers and anyone interested in fascia training, mobility exercises and therapeutic movement. It offers a grounded, nuanced perspective on how the body adapts and why better questions matter when interpreting research.
The paper discussed is ‘Influence of Long-Lasting Static Stretching on Maximal Strength, Muscle Thickness and Flexibility’, 2022.

In this reflective festive episode, I explore fascia, wholeness and the magic of awareness through lived experience, embodiment and deep listening. As interest in fascia, consciousness and embodied practice continues to grow, I invite you to look beyond data and analysis and return to the body as an already whole, living system.
Drawing on more than thirty years of work in anatomy, embryology, manual therapy and movement education, I reflect on fascia as the medium through which awareness is expressed. Rather than seeing the body as a collection of parts to be fixed or optimised, this episode speaks to fascia as the connective field through which sensation, perception and meaning arise.
This exploration weaves together moments from my own life, reflections on modern measurement and technology, and a deeper inquiry into what it means to be embodied and aware. From embryonic development and cellular continuity to breath, sound and subtle movement, I explore how awareness is not something we need to acquire, but something we can learn to notice and trust again.
This episode is an invitation to slow down, sense more clearly and reconnect with the quiet intelligence that is already present within your living body.
I hope you get a few moments to reflect and enjoy being you during the festive season, and as we greet the New Year.

In this episode, Joanne and Paul explore why prehab, not rehab, is the missing foundation in modern fitness, functional training, mobility and long-term movement health. If longevity matters to you, how you move now matters more than how hard you train.
They unpack why so many people get injured while exercising, how fascia training and mobility work are often misunderstood, and why the body adapts to the shapes and stresses we repeat over time. From gym culture and sports conditioning to rehabilitation exercises and therapeutic movement, this conversation questions whether current training models truly support resilience, adaptability and whole-body intelligence.
The discussion moves into somatic movement, micro movement medicine and the living fascial matrix. Joanne and Paul explore why linear thinking in training creates shear, restriction and injury, and why the human body is not built on mechanical levers but on continuous, responsive tissue. Drawing on decades of experience across physical therapy, rehabilitation, martial arts and movement education, they show how subtle, intelligent movement restores function far more effectively than force or repetition.
This episode is especially relevant for movement teachers, physiotherapists, personal trainers, coaches and anyone interested in functional fitness, therapeutic exercise and longevity. It offers a clear reframe of prehab as an ongoing relationship with the body, not something reserved for injury prevention alone.

In this episode I share an exclusive reading from my book Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement, and explore the origins of archetypal geometries, the Law of Three and the emergence of zero. These big ideas sit at the heart of sacred geometry and the symbolic designs that influence how we understand the body, consciousness and our place within a greater pattern.
We look at ancient numerals, the monad, the sacred circle and the way geometry becomes a language of meaning. These symbols are so much more than abstract concepts. They shape how we sense ourselves, how we move and how we recognise the continuity that runs through our fascia and our lived experience... Sacred patterns, spiritual archetypes and the designs found throughout nature have always been part of the body’s story.
If you’d like to explore these ideas more deeply, you can download a FREE chapter of Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement on my website: joanneavison.com

In this week’s conversation, Paul and Joanne explore the interstitium, the in-between tissue that shapes how the body moves, adapts and finds flow. Understanding this living network changes the way we think about fascia, movement, biomechanics and the subtle intelligence within the body.
They also share a highly useful case study from their teaching practice, offering a clear look at how a young dancer unlocked new freedom in her spine through micro movement medicine. This example will be especially helpful for movement teachers, yoga and Pilates practitioners, physiotherapists, manual therapists and anyone working with somatic awareness and fascia science.
Micro movement medicine does not replace your current method. It expands it. When we learn to recognise the patterns of rigidity and the fixed-to-flow spectrum, we can guide the body toward ease, adaptability and continuity. Small, thoughtful movements often create the most meaningful global change.
If you want to learn more about the magic of micro movement medicine and how it can transform your professional practice, directly from Paul and Joanne, then explore our courses at myofascialmagic.com

Artificial intelligence and cognitive science meet the living geometry of the human body in this week’s episode. A student from my Arhanta course asked AI about the structure of living cells, fascia and human biomechanics. The answer she received was confident but disconnected from what we see in embodied anatomy. When the question was refined with more clarity, AI offered a completely different explanation.
This conversation is a reminder that deep learning systems only reflect the questions they are given. The living body expresses patterns that machine learning cannot interpret without precision and genuine curiosity. Our fascia, our cellular geometry and our subtle vibratory nature reveal far more than automated logic can reach on its own.
If you are interested in fascia science, somatic intelligence or the deeper architecture of the human body, I hope this brings you closer to your own embodied understanding!

Fascia, Geometry and How We Organise Ourselves
In this episode, Joanne explores how the human body is organised through hierarchy, heterarchy, and holarchy. These three complementary patterns form the deeper architecture of being human. Drawing from her book 'Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement' and Keith Critchlow’s 'The Hidden Geometry of Flowers', she reveals how archetypal geometries and fascia-informed anatomy help us understand ourselves as both individual and interconnected.
Through clear examples such as letters, words, paragraphs, and pages, Joanne shows how each part of us is whole in itself and also part of a larger whole. This is the essence of a holarchy, and it mirrors how fascia, structure, consciousness, and community function.
This episode is an invitation to see yourself not as a mechanical set of parts, but as a living architecture of meaning, pattern, and intelligence.
In this episode:
• Hierarchy, heterarchy and holarchy explained clearly
• How the body holds order, pattern and relationship
• Fascia as an organising and unifying intelligence
• Archetypal geometries from nature to the human form
• Keith Critchlow’s wisdom on hidden geometry
• Why we are each a microcosm of a greater macrocosm
• How structure and consciousness reflect each other

Real strength isn’t about pushing harder — it’s about moving smarter.
In this episode, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley explore how fascia, biomechanics, and functional training reshape the way we think about strength. They discuss why “more effort” doesn’t always mean “more power,” and how the body’s connective intelligence — fascia — plays a vital role in building functional, sustainable strength that supports rather than strains.
Through practical insights and fascia-focused awareness, they uncover what true strength really feels like: elastic, responsive, and deeply integrated. This conversation is for teachers, therapists, and movers who want to go beyond muscle-based training and develop an intelligent relationship with the body’s natural architecture.

Breathing is more than the diaphragm — fascia, movement, and the whole body collaborate in every breath you take.
In this episode of the Myofascial Magic in Action Podcast, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley explore the deeper story of breathing. Is the diaphragm really the primary muscle of breath, or is it part of a much larger system involving fascia, ribs, viscera, feet, and movement itself?
Together we look at:
Breath shapes more than oxygen exchange — it informs posture, relaxation, performance, and even emotional resilience. This conversation invites you to rethink the diaphragm, rediscover your breath, and experience how fascia and movement make breathing a whole-body process.

In this moving episode, Joanne speaks with homeopath and fascia-focused bodyworker Heather Natoli, whose son’s life-threatening vascular tumour led to a remarkable journey through fascia, medicine, and healing.

Join me as I build on our recent episode about fascia as a spiritual interface, to delve deeper into the incredible ways this inner web connects our mind, body and spirit! It is both our soft-tissue architecture, and the home of our embodied wisdom and awareness, storing feelings and managing how energy moves through us…
We’ll explore fascia’s nature as a liquid crystal matrix - much like the responsive display of our phone screens, or, like chocolate! It is animated by our beingness and connects you to your inner self, even igniting moments of spiritual awakening. Then I share fascia’s utterly mind-blowing embryological origins… It is literally the sensory means by which you feel your way into form! And thirdly, I touch on that feeling we often get when we hear things like this - a feeling that we already know this, that something resonates with an inherent wisdom we already have…
We finish with a lovely practical meditation to help you connect with this directly. When you understand this liquid crystal, you can more easily see how your energy and your responses are connected, healing as your spirit dances within. And by tuning into your fascia, you can tap into deep, inner knowing, remembering your own powerful intuitive wisdom. Enjoy!

We live inside a concept of “linear time” and “linear space” and we work on the basis of “linear form” in movement, from the way classical anatomy is taught. Yet fascia, the fascinating “matrix of time and space” in the body - is part of everyone’s non-linear form and non-linear motion...
In this episode, Joanne is joined by her friend and colleague Shane McDermott to delve into the fascinating topic of “linear time” and how it can dominate our productivity and our culture and our self-image. What if we have the power to change that, with just a subtle shift in perspective and these beautiful distinctions? Can it impact our sense of self and our soul journey if we expand our understanding in simple ways that change how we perceive our bodies? How we move? How we feel?
Join Joanne and Shane as they invite listeners to expand their consciousness and gain a new perspective on, or relationship with, how we interact with time and space. Discover how you can break free from the constraints of linear time and see your way off the treadmill of the “productivity trap” and towards living a more empowered, intuitive, and awakened life.

In this conversation, Joanne Avison interviews Shane McDermott, an advanced practitioner, photographer, therapist, and explorer, often referred to as a “contemporary renaissance man”. They introduce the essential difference it makes to understand the human body beyond anatomy - and into archetypes - over time. To begin, they reminisce about meeting 25 years ago while teaching for Tom Myers and reflect on their time training with Caroline Myss, when she first taught Sacred Contracts (Archetypes) in person.
Joanne and Shane delve into the transformative impact of understanding archetypes on body work therapy, emphasizing the way we understand time and how it is linked so closely to our life force. When we think we are time bound - we can operate at a level that keeps us on the “hamster wheel”. When we know how our archetypes work, in time, we can access deeper states of being and healing. It is a wonderful introduction to the series on Space and Time that’s coming up soon. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it - and also check out our first episode with Shane released recently - 'Listening vs Hearing: How To Tune Into The World Around You' to put it all into practice.

Hello everyone and welcome! Today I'm exploring moving from burnout to balance. Whether you're a busy parent, an entrepreneur, a team member, or you just balance a lot, this is for you.
Burnout can manifest in many ways, from feeling constantly tired to losing passion for the things you once loved. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, often giving us signals long before our minds catch up. Tuning in and recognising our own body’s language, can guide us toward tiny adjustments that make huge differences to prevent it.
Especially if we honour the internal signals and treat ourselves with compassion. It's so easy to criticise ourselves, especially when we're juggling different roles and tasks and not managing everything perfectly. But self-awareness and compassion are key to finding that balance we seek; productivity might not be the optimum reward! Plus there’s micro things we can do to create a huge difference!
So how can we move from burnout to balance? It starts with small, practical steps. Taking time for yourself, establishing boundaries and listening to your body. Certain simple things can make a profound difference. Particularly remembering that moving from burnout to balance is a journey, not a destination - it’s more of a process than an event. It’s worth being patient with yourself; listening to your body, and practicing self-compassion…and using some of these simple tools. Just because they work and you're worth it!

Join us to learn three great movements for healing Diastasis Recti.
Your body is round and it needs to do what it does naturally, which is breathe, gently spiral and walk - while it heals. Some methods of working with this issue require you to compress and tighten an area that is already in trouble. That’s a bit like shouting at yourself when you fell over and grazed your knee! What you really want is a gentle hand to help you get up and clean the graze and give you a bit of loving kindness!!
Here you go - In this episode Paul Thornley and Joanne Avison explain why you DO NOT SHOUT at Diastasis Recti and YOU DO give yourself the right KIND of loving kindness. That way you are gently training over time (instead of straining in overtime) using Nature’s Ground Reaction Force to help you - to find your way back to a more optimum degree of healing. It’s a process - that ensures progress. Wishing your clients and you well in your kind-to-yourself practice. (Your rectus abdominis myofascia will thank you!)

In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the history of how the study of science in the West separated soma from soul. It has deep implications to our understanding of the intricate relationship between the body and the being that animates it. The notion of soul separation has sparked intense debate, with many seeking to reconcile the principles of science and spirituality. By understanding how the somatic approach was separated from the study of psychology, we can wonder if tapping into the wisdom of our body might foster a deeper connection with our soul.
Join Joanne Avison, considering (with compassion for our forefathers) where “soma and soul” were divorced. As we navigate the complexities of biomechanics and understand the fascia matrix, can we uncover hidden secrets about the very nature of our being? By tuning into our body wisdom and recognising that the wisdom of our soul animates it, perhaps we can naturally find a more profound understanding of our true essence and cultivate a more soulful approach to wellness practices and how we can be compassionate with ourselves...

Join Joanne and Paul in this fascinating episode as they share insights - and debunk some common myths - around Plantar Fasciitis. There's often different reasons FOR the pain, and it can need a variety of different treatments depending on the root cause. Sometimes Plantar Fasciitis is blamed on high arches, sometimes on low arches (flat feet). Sometimes there’s shin splints (from overuse) and sometimes lack of motion is blamed. Often it’s hard to know what, where and why you, or a client, might be struggling - it just hurts.
So in this episode we're bringing together our decades of experience in treating people and teaching movement, to help unravel this debilitating condition. We explore the intricate architecture of the foot, the various causes behind this painful condition, and why personalized treatment is crucial. We discuss how factors like genetics, early development, and even the type of shoes worn during childhood contribute to the condition. And we share valuable advice on differentiating treatment approaches, the impact of surface interfaces on foot health, and the importance of respecting our body's natural tissue intelligence.
We hope you enjoy the conversation and leave it feeling better informed and equipped in dealing with - or preventing - foot pain!

Join us for this conversation with the brilliant Professor Darrell Evans, diving deep (in plain language) into the fascinating world of anatomy, embryology, biological development and the interconnectedness of connective tissues. What does that really mean?
Professor Evans shares his brilliant and unconventional career journey, insights from his academic roles, his innovative teaching methods, and his perspectives on anatomical variability. (What makes us all the same is that we are all unique!! Right?)
We also touch on how we integrate personal experience in professional practice, as Joanne shares her experience of treating Professor Evans as a client (initially terrifying!), and Professor Evans recounts how his own physical activities and teaching approach evolved through his deep understanding of the human body. Prof Evans makes it real in a really engaging and inspiring way!!
Tune in for an insightful discussion on the wonders of the human body, that bridges the gap between scientific theory and the real-life practical experience of being human with anatomy. Enjoy!

For many it’s the season for gifting, and I want to share a very special gift with you, dear Listener! Last year John Sharkey and Mark Flannigan released a gold standard, peer-reviewed research paper which seeks to move us towards an interdisciplinary definition of fascia, particularly for the benefit of all fascia-focused movement and manual practitioners. It’s an incredible and important piece of work, and so many of you loved hearing about it when I originally released this (in fact it quickly became one of our most listened-to episodes of all time), that I couldn’t resist re-sharing it with you now, for any who missed it or any who want a refresher!
Every movement instructor and manual practitioner I meet seeks to help others to move better and feel better. We all strive to do our best within our respective modalities and “scope of practice”. Yet we find the definitionof fascia elusive – because it is. It’s elusive to us, to the medical professions and to our clients, when we try to translate what we’re doing and why. Learning about fascia and myofascial behaviours is rapidly becoming essential to all practitioners. Yet where do we start, if we don’t have a definition that makes sense to us all?
In this paper these esteemed authors offer some brilliant insights and answers, which I attempt to translate and slightly “storify” for you here, so that regardless of your modality or familiarity with reading research, you’ll feel better informed overall, and inspired and confident to sit down and read it.
If you only want a general overview – and can’t wait to read the actual piece – then stop at the 26 minute mark – and go to the paper from there. If you’d enjoy the deeper insights, then keep on to the cliff-hanger at the end! Either way – please gift yourself the paper and ENJOY!!
READ THE PAPER

This is an IMPORTANT conversation with Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau, who is famous for his videos of the Fascia Matrix IN VIVO. In vivo means “in the living body”, and in this interview he explains the difference between learning anatomy from dead or living bodies. We make different conclusions when we learn in these different ways - and it matters.
Fascia is essentially, our living tissue architecture. It’s alive and well to the extent that we are - and you could say we are alive and well to the extent that it is! Essentially, your fascia is organising you anyway - and Dr Guimberteau tells us why this is so important.
In fact it matters so much that we decided to re-release this gem of a conversation from our archives so that more of you can hear it. We also talk about the inspiration and motivation behind bringing his work to the public domain, the relationship between fractal chaos and efficient movement, and the non-linear nature of all biological forms. Dr Guimberteau also treated us to some philosophical reflections on the deep wisdom that comes when we accept the unpredictable nature of the fascial fibres within us...
ABOUT DR JEAN CLAUDE GUIMBERTEAU
Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and former President of the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2011-2012) (SOFCPRE). Through his innovative use of video-endoscopy investigating the fascia matrix, Dr Guimberteau has revolutionised our understanding of living human architecture.

In this episode Joanne addresses a fascinating question about micro movement, from a Myofascial Magic in Action course participant. She unpacks why daily micro movements can lead to such significant improvements in wellbeing, explaining this phenomenon through the key concepts of challenge, courage, and care.
Could it be that these small, mindful movements can serve our wellbeing as much (if not more than) the grand physical achievements we might strive to achieve? Is this the missing link in understanding myofascia applied? How exactly does the body’s natural ability to self-organize link to overall health? What can we learn from Joanne’s elegant 85 year old mother...?
And, most importantly, given the knowledge of the fascia matrix behind the work, how can these subtle practices transform our health and human performance?
Let’s find out!

In this episode Joanne and Paul explore the evolution of movement science, emphasising the non-linear, self-organising nature of human bodies. With a delightful blend of historical anecdotes, personal stories, and foundational research, they challenge the traditional biomechanical approach to human movement.
Joanne reveals how an 18th century mechanical duck offers insights into why we’ve long thought mechanically about the human body (and we all know Joanne’s NOT a fan of this approach!), while Paul passionately argues for the immense benefits of using intuitive, fascia-based movement practice over conventional exercise protocols.
PLUS, Joanne gives you a sneak peek into her yet-to-be-published book, ‘Myofascial Magic in Action’.
So listen in for a deep, thought-provoking conversation that might just change how you think about movement (and ducks) forever. Enjoy!

In this week’s episode I interview Dinah Siman, a wonderful multi-talented teacher who practices Pilates, Yoga and Gyrotonic™, and has made her name in recent years by specialising in Menopause Pilates. Now also an author, Dinah aims to impassion movement teachers to celebrate menopause and give confidence to support students during this transformative phase.
We talk about both the history and the current understanding of menopause, Dinah generously shares her own journey, and I especially love her thoughts about the opportunities menopause can offer if it's well understood and well supported.
Regardless of your personal practice or what you teach, this book truly is written from the heart and designed to give everyone a sense of confidence and well-being in what can be a difficult time to navigate. Written with Dinah’s lively sense of humour and backed by science (but not loaded to be a ‘heavy read’) we get to chat about how the book works, why it felt so important to write, and why it’s a must-buy for anyone who is (or works with) women in movement!! So I really hope you enjoy this conversation and find a lot of value in it.

This episode is inspired by important questions we’re very often asked by movement teachers about cueing and language.
So... What exactly do we all mean by the word Stretch? Or Stabilise? Or Strengthen? Or Stiffen? Is Stress always a bad thing, or can it actually be a good thing sometimes? We explore each word and its implications, as well as how we can use them wisely….or not so wisely!!
Again and again, we hear these 5 ‘S words’ come up, regardless of the particular modality a teacher is using, whether it is Pilates, or Yoga or 5 Rhythms, or Dance or Personal Training or Martial Arts - whatever you may teach. It’s crucial to consider these words carefully in order to enhance how the practice, whatever it is, makes sense to the person you are teaching. And of course, Cueing, Seeing, and Guiding clients well requires us to use a language THEY understand….this is not so much a formula as a discussion about the ingredients!!
Hopefully there’s some important food for thought here for you, to enhance the delicious movements you already create for the people you work with…Enjoy!

In this episode Paul and Joanne respond to a question they received about the value of Neural Flossing or Spinal Flossing. The question “to floss or not to floss?” is one worth considering – and even if you disagree, this conversation might expand the questions you ask!
Joanne wasn’t entirely sure what the term meant, so by asking Paul, this conversation unfolded. It isn’t intended to ruffle any feathers or diminish the work of very well-intentioned therapists, but we do challenge the notion of how valuable “flossing” is - by the interpretation we use. In any event, it is super clear that the value of micromovements might just provide a simpler answer to the problems that “flossing” is intended to resolve... See what you think!

This week’s episode is Joanne's response to a request – to talk about Geometry and what it means in understanding the body. It’s a fascinating exploration.
Joanne's response includes a reading from her book Yoga Fascia Anatomy and Movement. She talks about how important Geometry is to our form – and how the ancient wisdom behind Yoga and the Sanskrit language (among other languages) is much incredibly sophisticated.
It is really an invitation to appreciate how complex and brilliant the body is - literally and symbolically. We hear how, in the East (where the being and the body were not separated and segregated from each other) such a unified system incorporates sound, and the geometry that makes sense of our nature...

Join us for an informal discussion between Paul and Joanne about the art and wonder of dissection. It can be so valuable – and practitioners can learn so much – yet there are some distinctions to understand about it.
“Both of us have had the privilege of working with – indeed – learning with, John Sharkey – and we are better practitioners for having been in the Lab with him on so many occasions...”
You will hear all about that in this podcast, as well as learning about many of the eye-opening, empowering, and downright surprising discoveries we've both made through our own dissection journeys.

Competitive versus Collective – this is such an important theme in the personal and the professional field – especially in bodywork and movement therapy. Exploring these ideas can be so helpful in expanding our awareness of other modalities, and enhancing the actual work we do!
In this episode Joanne Avison considers how we can sometimes be in competition with ourselves – and how it can work to give ourselves the opportunity to “collect” a broader base of information and grow with it...
This theme, of the power of the collective, is deep to Cynthia Allen’s ethos in the upcoming Move Better Feel Better Summit this year, where Joanne will be speaking on Sunday 5th May. It's all online and FREE to join and receive this collective wisdom, so click below to find out all about it!

Paul and Joanne share their experience and stories about pelvic issues, how they affect so many of us, and... how misunderstood they might be! How can we “rephrase” our understanding of the mythical “Pelvic Floor” and discover the magic of releasing the Pelvic Foot?
This is not a made up idea, by movement instructors who didn’t like learning anatomy! Paul talks about the key science behind this structural understanding of the human body. Effectively, you have a pelvic foot – not a pelvic floor... It’s true, and magic happens when you know that, know how to treat that and know how to move so that you can enjoy freedom from so many issues that are usually assigned to the “pelvic floor”.
There are many elements in Myofascial Magic that we can bring to the table (or mat or machine when we are teaching) that will automagically enhance all kinds of issues!

Shoulders are such an expressive part of us! A shrug can replace a thousand words, right? Do you, or any of your clients, experience shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder, aching, stiffness or just limited range of motion in this amazing, if complex, “joint”?
In this episode Paul and Joanne share some delightful stories about shoulders. What do you gain from training them? How can you avoid straining them? What are the many elements in Myofascial Magic that we can bring to the table (or mat or machine, when we are teaching) that will automagically enhance working with shoulders?
There are some really valuable points in this fascinating discussion.

This episode covers the importance of fascia and how John Sharkey regards it as a process, rather than an object. It explains why some of us have difficulty defining fascia, or describing its paradigm-shifting significance to our colleagues and clients, friends and family. John is such a fabulous story teller and so well informed that you can literally collect the gems as we romp through this discussion covering a number of topics from surgery and dissection to crystal healing and consciousness!!
Interviewing John is always a delight and you can enjoy other episodes with him in previous series of this podcast too.

Welcome to the second episode of our Myofascial Magic strand! I recently co-founded Myofascial Magic In Action with the esteemed Paul Thornley, with the mission of providing practitioners with client-centred micro-movement keys. And now we're bringing you our shared passion - and the answer to some of your burning questions - in the form of this special joint podcast series, releasing every couple of weeks.
In this episode we talk about one of the most fundamental movements of most of our lives - WALKING... Fifteen years ago Monty Python did a sketch called The Ministry of Silly Walks. It was hilarious (look it up on YouTube for a giggle!). But the truth is, that we all have a walking pattern that may or may not serve us as well as it could. Have you watched animals walking? Have you noticed that different people often mimic different animals? Like Penguins (that tend to rock and shuffle), or Bears (who have an ipsilateral swing) or Flamingos, that spiral-lift one foot after the other. It’s fascinating.
A great deal of the biomechanical information out there about “correct walking gait” focuses on foot placement and toe-heel relationships. It measures things like stride length and all sorts of metrics that prove pretty meaningless in practice. They fail us miserably when we just want to be able to move well and BONUS – actually receive energy from walking, rather than lose it. YES – that is possible.
In this episode Paul tells a gorgeous story from his army days and how cleverly walking was understood so that a unit of soldiers (of all different heights, sizes and abilities) could all walk in sync and arrive at the same time. What actually happens when we recognise how the Pelvic Foot works? How do we release rebound energy? And even give it back to the body? Listen in as we explore it all!
We hope you get a lot out of this conversation,
thank you for being here,

It's just been Mother's Day here in the UK, which inspired me to take a deep dive into "the in-between" which is a rich source of magic in my life. As a mother and a daughter, I live in the in-between of those two roles. This podcast is a bit about my personal journey with that, the in-between tissue of the fascia, and how this incredible matrix forms the in-between of us... We are all, after all, seeking the magic balance between understanding the science and spirit of this living architecture of ours! It's the magic of that I get so hooked on!
You can tell how important that magic is to me by the title of my next book, and course of the same name, Myofascial Magic In Action. Watch this space for the publication date, and listen to the special MMIA episodes I'm doing with Paul Thornley on this channel, to find out more about the course.
Wishing you all well,
Joanne

Welcome to the second episode of this new season, in which I interview the wonderful Dr Karen Kirkness!
Karenis a yoga practitioner and recovering academic. Her book, Spiral Bound: Integrated Anatomy for Yoga, provides a rationale for curating movement practices that are led by the rotational constraints of the body. In this podcast (recorded in 2023 before Karen was rightfully awarded her PhD) we share our admiration for each other’s work and our fascination with spiral anatomy.
If you are a movement teacher or manual practitioner; if you are a mother, a daughter, a husband, a son, a father, a friend or a professional colleague, if you juggle and spin one hundred plates on sticks – (ie, if you have a pulse) – then there is magic in this conversation for you too. It is published in celebration of Dr Kirkness’s work, and in loving appreciation of her contribution to the world.
I hope you enjoy us enjoying each other as much as we did!
Joanne

For many it’s the season for gifting, and I want to share a very special gift with you, dear Listener!
John Sharkey and Mark Flannigan have just released a gold standard, peer-reviewed research paper which seeks to move us towards an interdisciplinary definition of fascia, particularly for the benefit of all fascia-focused movement and manual practitioners. It’s an incredible and important piece of work, so I couldn’t resist sharing it with you in this special episode.
Every movement instructor and manual practitioner I meet seeks to help others to move better and feel better. We all strive to do our best within our respective modalities and “scope of practice”. Yet we find the definition of fascia elusive – because it is. It’s elusive to us, to the medical professions and to our clients, when we try to translate what we’re doing and why. Learning about fascia and myofascial behaviours is rapidly becoming essential to all practitioners. Yet where do we start, if we don’t have a definition that makes sense to us all?
In this brand new paper these esteemed authors offer some brilliant insights and answers, which I attempt to describe and slightly “storify” for you here, so that regardless of your modality or familiarity with reading research, you’ll feel inspired and confident to sit down and read it.
If you only want a general overview – and can’t wait to read the actual piece – then stop at the 26:10 minute mark – and go to the paper from there. If you’d enjoy the deeper insights, then keep on to the cliff-hanger at the end! Either way – please gift yourself the paper and ENJOY!!
With love and light, Joanne

The Sound of Music and the Magic of Alexander Technique is the theme of this podcast with Tully Hall. I am so glad you wrote to me Tully - thank you. It's an honour to spend time with you and I loved our chat. This episode inspired me and gave me the confirmation that you talked about recieving! Thank you!! This lovely conversation explores Alexander Technique and the magic of the right body work for any musician. Tully's Website: https://www.alexandertechtully.com
Michelle Nayali-Bouvier has been teaching yoga and movement for 23 years. Her work centers around the merging of ancient practices with modern science, with the intention to help educate people on ways to get more in touch with their bodies. We had a wonderful conversation about all the many aspects of being human this includes!! Michelle seeks relentlessly to build and invite greater resilience, joining the dots to connect many different modalities. We met because Michelle von Straaten joined the dots of our friendship network - so it was the perfect conversation! Website: https://www.michellebouvier.com
In this episode we get to hear about the beautiful experience of birthing when there is reverence and preparation for gentle empowerment of the The Mother (which is somehow defined by the Newborn). Alison is so experienced as a midwife, yoga teacher and hypnobirthing facilitator that she naturally describes how different it can be in real life to the TV sensationalised version of birth as a stressful (or even distressing) procedure. It can also be very calm, with very little intervention and augmented by a beautiful approach to what the word "midwife" really means. The lovely Alison talks us through the "mandala" of links between Yoga, Midwifery, hypnobirthing and hypnotherapy as the most valuable tools for bringing us into self-awareness - almost "birthing ourselves" into a natural way of being, so that we can manage anxiety and find a quiet, self-respectful centre whenever we need to. We also touch upon the subject of food addiction in both Alison's professional and personal life; and come beautifully full circle at the end of our conversation, when Alison talks about the death of two family members, and her role - as with birth - in holding space and working gently to support this process of transitioning from one world to another. Welcome to midwifery and the lovely role it can be both literally and symbolically!

Permaculture is the fascinating world that Justin Robertshaw has made his home - along with a deep yoga practice and understanding, through experience, of Ayurveda as an applied Healing Art. This was a fascinating and fun dive into how all these elements form the mandala by which Justin makes such a difference in the world. It's really inspiring how he links so many teachings together, with YOU and your "why" as the key to joining the dots. His approach is so multidimensional, yet easy to understand, it was a lesson in so many ways for me. This episode left me inspired and even compelled to explore more...I hope it does for you too!

Jill Miller is the author and creative practitioner behind Roll Model and her newest book Body By Breath. It's a remarkable achievement! Somehow, as Jill describes in this podcast, the book makes you feel safe in your fascination and enquiry into breathing better. Which means sleeping better. Which means feeling better....it's all in there in a very comprehensive deep dive for all types of people. If you are a practitioner you can feast on the first part - before you move into the practical practices. If you are not - you can skip it and still get so much magic out of the second half. It's crammed with accessible, beautifully illustrated practices and QR codes to find video resources. Everyone is catered for. Which makes sense - everyone breathes!! Right?

"In the Museum" is a metaphor that Christine Wushke uses to teach anatomy to her yoga teachers, in the Myofascial Yoga Institute of Canada. It's a delightful way of honouring all that is classical and traditional and how it grows into the newest information on Fascia and Fasciategrity and moving the art and science of yoga forward! Christine is also a practitioner of Structural Integration so her deep appreciation of all aspects of being human, brings a special quality to her work. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!
Tea and Treasure is about tea (and other) ceremonies that are such an essential part of our lives in so many ways. I've always had a passion for tea, for coffee and for chocolate. Not just consuming them, but having been a Chocolatier for twenty years of my life, I learned about it as a liquid crystal matrix (up to my wrists in it some days!!) which of course relates directly to fascia as a matrix. This episode isn't about that though. It's more about alchemy and the importance of tiny gestures that can make that alchemy so exquisite. It's about Tea and Treasure and the blessing that can be! With love
Angela and Victor have been teaching yoga for over 50 years. Their work is beautiful and in this podcast, I so enjoyed talking to them, so that you could get a sense of the magical alchemy between them. They are visiting the UK this March (18th) and I do so hope you get an opportunity to join them. Details at angela-victor.com or email treehouseyogalondon@gmail.com. Recently, the subject of dissection has come forward as a foundation to expanding learning, particularly about the fascia matrix. In this episode I interview someone who came to Fascia Dissection to explore the Sacred Feminine; the details of the female body and what makes it the way it is. Cryn Horn is an artisan craftwoman and a wonderful teacher of Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra. Her craft is weaving. As such, she has translated her way of seeing connectivity and inter-relating to an understanding of the body. Her models are just exquisite. This interview was on Zoom, so in the podcast you cannot see the models that we described. (In due course it will be released on YouTube so you can!) Cryn made such a contribution to me, with her gentle curiosity and way of seeing things. Hers is an example of how we are all learners on these quests to understanding our structure so that we can help ourselves and each other to move better by working together and honouring ALL the questions that come up. Enjoy our discussion!
In this episode I talk with my dear friend Wibbs Coulson who is a nurse and a yoga teacher. Wibbs uses his long experience in cardiology and A&E, to make a difference to his patients in a few moments of breathing. He's not making it up either - the monitors tell their story. It becomes THEIR story of managing their own well-being - inspired by the most simple suggestion. It's a compelling listen and I doubt you will be able to completely ignore the invitation to make such an easy difference to yourself. In a way, Wibbs is confirming what we already know and forget to do - and the difference it makes is GREAT BIG HUGE!! What a blessing!

Sabine has trained in classical medicine, Osteopathy and functional medicine. Her passion for the human body includes the human being. In her long career she brings the wisdom of experience as an elite athlete, to the deep esoteric teachings of Shamanism. Her work reflects how she sees beings and bodies and weaves together these different approaches with passion. Her metaphors are delightful and any of you who work with people will resonate with so much of what Sabine shares in this episode! Enjoy - and, as ever, thank you for your feedback. P.s. Michelle tells her story in this episode and it is one of Alchemy, Tenacity and Endurance. If every one of us is in the world to perform our own, personal, Hero or Heroine's Journey; then Michelle has come to that winning place in her quest. Why Alchemy? Because her story is one of transformation from wounds to wonder at how marvellous and subtle the human body really is. Michelle found out the hard way - however the wisdom she gleaned from keeping on keeping on and finding new ways of moving through her yoga practice goes from "hard to healing". It is a process rather than an event (of course!) - and the humility that Michelle shares her work from is endearing and inspiring. Her teaching comes from a place deep to this experience and it is a delight to hear her story.
In this bonus podcast I talk to Paul Thornley (Advanced Neuromuscular Therapist &
Pilates Medical Exercise Specialist in Chronic Pain & Rehabilitation Training) about the value of human dissection. I have had the priviledge of working alongside Paul in the dissection lab on many occassions, and took great joy in distinguishing with him the meaning - not only as movement and manual practitioners, but as human beings - that we can derive from human dissection programmes. This podcast episode supports a FREE online educational event being run by the National Training Centre on the dissection experience, hosting the most respected authorities in fascia science to take your questions and share in experience. The event takes place on Friday February 10th 2023 FROM 6PM - 7PM GMT. Register free for the event at

Described by one of her clients as A Voice of Hope, Claire is enthusiastic and committed to transforming the idea that "weakness has to be strengthened" into an accessible and self-affirming way of working uniquely with each client. Her work is designd to empower them to restore their own unique pelvic health by integrating a better understanding of their own anatomy, their fascia and the living tensegrity principles that make so much sense of how we restore integrity; with confidence and encouragement. I do hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. God bless.

Recently someone asked me if Biomotional and Biomechanical are synonymous? In this episode I consider the two, coming from the fact that movement is not an intellectual process!! In my world we are not biomechanical at all ever...so sticking "bio" infront of a word and describing different hinges and levers to justify using "levers" as synonyms for "joints" in the human body doesn't make us mechanical. I'm struggling with this metaphor at the best of times...!! Do you know what I mean?
When we win a medal or lose a loved one, we can think of it as an event - whether it is positive and desirable, or negative and undesirable. It is an event; a something that "happened to us" that leaves us delighted or depleted (in a "state"); whether it is grief or euphoria. In truth, in our living experience, it might be more like a process than an event. If we engage with it that way, could it be easier to handle if we approach it differently? I talk about this today, initially from a context of treating a client - however it seems to apply to a lot more. Our soft tissue systems, once we understand how they process things, encourage us to perhaps think about them differently and give us permission to take our time. See what you think...
After lots of feedback about Fascia and chocolate (and books) last week, this episode continues the theme in a slightly different way. It considers the need to unite the way we look at fascia and integrate the language we use to describe it. I guess the theme (as ever for me) is bringing together the spirit and the science! I think we are in a paradigm shift that calls for new language to make sense of it - culturally as a species and personally as individuals, walking around whole and complete as we do! Thank you for your feedback - I so appreciate it! Let me know if there's any aspect of fascia you would like explored in the new book! There's still time to include it.
In this episode I announce my new book and the latest update from my publishers that confirms we all love two things especially, in a recession! Books and chocolate!! That just happens to be magical in my world! In this episode I give you three reasons why! We all have a lot of work to do, to cross The Rubicon and take our colleagues and clients with us...for the highest good of all concerned, of course! It's an invitation to confirm our own instincts and intuition and recognise ourselves as whole and complete...you'll see what I mean!
Have you ever had a situation, where all the big stuff that you focussed on is in place, all the people that need to be there, the major organisation is all managed, the project is on track and then the “insignificant thing” you overlooked nearly brings the whole undertaking to its literal and symbolic knees? The issue reveals itself as the “one little thing” that was assumed, the one micro-message that didn’t get delivered, that one box that wasn’t ticked. I share the silliest thing in this episode that turned the lead of a niggle into the gold of a victory and alchemised my day!! Let me know your version!
Our understanding of the Fascia Matrix is evolving and unfolding. The Big Travel this year, was initiated by the invitation to go to The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA with John Sharkey and the team. It felt like a 3 year wait - and it was a most illuminating and fascinating trip. As ever, John built bridges between scientists, researchers, therapists, movement teachers and fascinated people working in the fields of human health, movement and performance. The Ohio State University state-of-the-art anatomy laboratory was an experience in itself and in this episode John and I share some of the amazing moments - weaving them in to the bigger picture of how our understanding of fascia is evolving. From the fabric of our own form to that of Spinach Leaves - we really take a deep and respectful bow to Mother Nature in this episode!
I had to travel again, long haul, for the first time in over 3 years. It's a very different world. In this episode I talk about finding neutral - the strategy that saved me sooooo much stress as my trip unfolded! I hope it resonates with you somewhere - and that the sense of stillness in the magical place I'm in comes across! Close your eyes for a moment and see if you can receive the sense of it!! (I wish I could bottle it for you!) With love and light, joanne
Jean Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and former President of the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2011-2012) (SOFCPRE). Through his innovative use of video-endoscopy investigating the fascia matrix, Dr Guimberteau has revolutionised our understanding of living human architecture. In this episode we talk about the inspiration and motivation behind bringing his work to the public domain, the relationship between fractal chaos and efficent movement and the non-linear nature of all biological forms!! (A subject dear to my heart!!). Jean Claude also treated us to some philosophical reflections on the deep wisdom that comes when we accept the unpredictable nature of the fascial fibres within us. There is so much gold in this interview, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. https://www.endovivo.com/
The inimitable Sue Hitzmann is founder of MELT Method and an enthusiastic trail blazer in the world of making our understanding of fascia practical and valuable and accessible. It's much more than that! Her contribution is super valuable and her enthusiasm is a joy to enjoy!! Have fun and let me know your thoughts!
Chris and Ann Frederick are founders of 'Frederick Stretch Therapy', a specialist combination of movement and manual therapy, which they have developed over many years through decades of hands-on experience, authoring books, providing relief and teaching thousands, as well as conducting their own research. In this podcast we talk about nomenclatur in the fascia space - including the evolving definition of the word 'stretch' - and the need for integration between science, the arts, and spirituality to deepen our collective understanding and use of language, in its effort to describe the implicit nature and behaviour of the fascia matrix. Chris and Ann also list their highlights from the recent International Fascia Research Conference (IFRC) in Montreal.

In this episode I ask if fascia can be considered the Neutral Servant of the body - and the being? I share some of my thoughts about what fascia is, or at least, why it is so difficult to define. I quote some thoughts from John Godman and Andrew Taylor Still that show it is a question that has been asked for hundreds of years. Perhaps it is supposed to remain something of a mystery?
We are all biomotional creatures - as a distinction that offers us the roundness, the spirality, the chirality and the charism of our natural movements. Biomotional and biomotion are distinct from Biomchanics and Biomechanical; which are the terms we have inherited - and invested in - in the scholarly study of human movement. It is not that one is fiction and one is fact. They are both metaphors to describe how we living, animated beings naturally move. The notion that we are biomechanical is a metaphor that is so deep, we have become spellbound by it. Yet - not one of us is a machine. Go figure!!

Dr Wilbour Kelsick paid a flying visit soon after his trip to Montreal for the sixth International Fascia Research Congress. In this delightful interview we covered everything from the keys to elite athletic performance, through trees, IFRC and the magic moments he experienced there. I found it deeply moving and meaningful that he spoke of slowing down!! It seems to be a theme!
John Sharkey is my special guest in this lovely interview about the sixth International Fascia Research Congress, in Montreal this September 2022. We discuss some of the fabulous work in Fascia Research and how important it is to understand how to apply the knowledge into movement and manual practice. The dissection course John mentions in this episode takes place at the Trecchi Human Academy in Cremona, Italy 2023. Please visit the National Training Centre (NTC) website, of which John is founding Director, for further information about John's courses and dissection programmes. https://ntc.ie/
In this episode I share some snail stories that have inspired me deeply. I think may be we are in a very, very slow pursuit of a new art. Going slowly is a fine art and one that I don't think it's easy to learn...although it's possible and worth spending time practicing!! See if you recognise any of this and agree with me that it's a super-power!!
In this episode of the Podcast, Series 3, I interview Vic Evans. Vic joined us for the MAP course 21/22 and is joining us again for the new course starting 8th October...

In this episode of the Podcast, Series 3, I interview Alex Golding. Alex joined us for the MAP course and in this interview we talk about the profound difference it makes to become friends with some of the archetypal patterns that we all share. While we each have a unique team of twelve; there are four that play a key role in every single one of us! Alex describes the profound impact of recognising the voice of her inner Victim archetype pattern and it is a rich story of finding patience and kindness with herself and reframing her ideas of well-being!
We are all so often told just to "be yourself" in social media or in presentations. Yet - how do we know "who" that is? What happens when we realise that we "don't know"... For further information about the Mapping your Archetypal Profile (MAP) course:

In this episode I Interview the lovely Lisa Babiuk, movement teacher and fasciategrity specialist, about some aspect of her journey through studying the Archetypes Course. Lisa works one to one with people and also in classes - being one of the protagonists in the Integrated Fasciategrity In Motion conference. Lisa runs a Yoga Teacher Training course and is passionate about making a difference to people. In this episode we discuss: Why understanding archetypal patterns give you such an edge as a teacher....and so much more...
This Meditation is a THANK YOU gift to every one who is in the Collective as a token of my appreciation for your kindness and encouragement over the last year. I hope you will enjoy this resource, when you get 30 minutes to sit quietly and relax and a guided meditation is appropriate for you to unwind and fill yourself with light and Grace. (p.s. please do not listen to this while driving; it is designed to support you in unplugging from everyday stuff and will distract you if you need to concentrate).
Fascia and water play supremely significant roles in removing pain and improving performance. They work together in very specific ways. Fascia has many different expressions in the human body and water (which is mostly what we are made of) does too - of a particular kind. That is "bound water" - bound by fascia and (in a way) bound as fascia. It isn't liquid water in the sense of what you might expect to see pouring from a jug. It has a very different structure - and this quick episode helps you make sense of how fascia plays a part. This is a short and sweet tip (an accessible sound byte) on a subject bigger than an iceberg! More soon 🙏🏻😊🕸
What is tree school? Well, it turns out there is such a thing - it's just that trees don't speak "English" or "Spanish" or any of our mother tongues - any more than our own bodies do! They have a whole other language that has a whole lot we can learn from. In this episode I play with that idea and why it is so essential for us to go to Tree School too!! What does ‘mystery’ mean to you? It may have different meanings depending on the circumstances you find yourself in. In this episode, I discuss the role of mystery in our own healing, be that personal or on behalf of the clients you treat and work with. How does science account for mystery; do we accept it as something that we can’t ever (and should never) know, or do we believe we’re entitled to know? That it is only a matter of time before all life’s mysteries can be crunched into quantifiable data? What is the value and the grace of mystery in our everyday lives, and does our acceptance of the unknown contribute towards removing pain and improving our performance?

What does it mean when we focus on "Stepping Up" our performance? In this episode we look into traveling first class, in life - and how, through a fit of giggles, I learned a very profound lesson!
I was delighted to chat with Ram and Kalyani who are co-founders of Arhanta Online Academy, an important centre of excellence in yoga.
Between us all, we have decades of experience teaching yoga in a variety of ways. Indeed, we could easily have talked (for hours) about yoga as a means to remove pain and improve performance! We know it can play a meaningful role in both and this truth lies at the centre of our respective work. In this conversation we shine a spotlight on Education in the yoga field and the importance of including both the science and the senses, the form and the feel of yoga as a somatic experience. We talk about this through the lens of Fascia and why it is so essential to understand in any yoga practice.
We cannot reduce that somatic sense to scientific data – however, we can use it wisely to help us find the most appropriate wisdom behind our work; respecting the scientific research that supports it. That is a way to honour the ancient wisdom behind Yoga – which Ram and Kalyani understand so deeply. It's a lovely chat and Ram asked some challenging and valuable questions later on about fascia. It is always a delight to discover we are all coming from similar intentions to make sense of yoga - and make a difference - for all stages of learning and teaching in the field. Always an honour!

Marie is a true artist and presenter of movement, art and ideas that come under the banner of the Healing Arts on a very international multi-cultural basis! Her translation of movement into practice and creative ways of improving performance are so dynamic and unique! This chat inspired me so much! There are some wonderful "outside the box" ideas ...that speak for themselves! Enjoy!! (You will hear how much I did!).
Lisa Babiuk is one of the three founders of Integrated Biotensegrity. Along with Paul Thornley and Rachel Tudor, this devoted team created a programme for everyone interested in movement and understanding the new world of fascia, natural movement and integrating the natural biology of living tensegrity. Lisa is dedicated to pain free movement as something that is accessible to everyone! Her work is fascinating and after we talk about all that the Integrated Biotensegrity programme has to offer (super valuable event by movers for movers) - we get in to the magic of her work and motivates it. It's really fascinating. This April 8, 9 and 10, 2022 - you will have a chance to join in 9 movement sessions, after a keynote presentation each day - with questions and answers and lots of interaction with the presenters. Then you get to keep the recordings for 6 months so you can rinse and repeat - it's a fabulous event!

Last year, Neil Theise, famous for distinguishing The Interstitium of the fascia matrix, chatted to me for an hour about just that. He is a fascinating human being, with a passion for science and the spirit behind it. My respect is huge and I am delighted to say that since this interview took place in real time, Neil is in the completion stages of his book and more papers. Watch this space and join our collective via our website joanneavison.com for more information that will be sent out to our email subscribers. In the meantime, enjoy this fascinating conversation! (This March Neil, John Sharkey, Carol Davis and yours truly were around the table on a discussion panel, with Jan Trewartha on the Fascia Hub, presenting about Resonance - the dream comes closer).
In 2021, my friend and colleague John Sharkey, saw some of the work he has been doing over the last two or three decades come to fruition. We talk about the science behind the scenes; although when two storytellers get together, it is anything but dry and academic. In fact, we are both so enthusiastic it ran well over an hour! Since then, early in 2022, there was another chapter - so stay close - Episode 2 is recorded and soon to be released. Join John live on March 12, 2022 for the presentation on Resonance for The Fascia Hub (link below) - where we get to tell more relevant stories, along with Carol Davis and Neil Theise, hosted by Jan Trewartha. Don't miss this one, it's pure magic!

In this lovely interview hosted by Helen Eadie, Karen Kirkness and I get to enjoy talking with Helen about some of what went into writing Spiral Bound, Karen's marvellous book that came out in 2021 - lucky for all of us!
It really was a privilege to be part of that process with Handspring Publisging and Helen's thoughtful and beautifully crafted questions really highlight the collective intentions that this book brought forward. It was an incredible triumph over life's ups and downs!
As any of my author friends know (so well) it takes something beyond personal commitment to bring a book like this to life. It is blind faith and prayer to honour the difference we can all make to each other, in sharing our experience, knowledge and wisdom in such a way that works for others to use as a resource!!
That's the prayer anyway...Karen does it with Grace and Love, which I suspect is the magic ingredient that alchemises the whole process and makes it a joy to read this book. It is a precious tool to work with - as well as a brilliant reference resource!
I cannot wait to work with Karen next Wednesday 16th, as our Guest on ABC Masterclass, to set off Series 2, which follows in March. (I almost feel guilty that a subject as serious as anatomy, can bring such joy in the learning process! Seems like an unfair advantage somehow!) Karen just has this magical way...
You'll see what I mean if you listen to this...
In this episode I'm delighted to speak with my dear friend and revered colleague, Karen Kirkness. Karen's background is in yoga, art, and clinical anatomy. She is the recent author of the ground-breaking book: 'Spiral Bound', and creator of ‘The 5 Filaments Theory’ of how our anatomy naturally expresses itself in a spiral motif. Karen has created an educational programme and professional qualification for movement practitioners, based in spiral anatomy. We talk about Karen's book, her passion for embodying theory and bringing it to life! Then there is the alchemising properties of motherhood, and the therapeutic balm that is working with spiral motion. The mix is rich; Enjoy!!
To buy Karen's book please visit the Handspring website and enter the code PRPI10 at checkout for 10% off!
This episode is an interview with Liz McNulty of Tensegrity Medicine Charleston, whom I met on Instagram and instantly resonated with. Liz animates her particular kind of bodywork from a deep experience as a therapist and waxes lyrical about the approach to Tensegrity Medicine she studied with Kelly Clancy; someone we both admire and appreciate, as you will hear. It is a real treat to share in Liz's enthusiasm for how the work works and the theme of respect that runs through her fascination with fascia and how tensegrity works in the living body, as the theme throughout her therapeutic intervention.
In this episode I talk with Steve Haines - bodyworker and author of the 'Really Strange' graphic books on pain, trauma, anxiety and touch. I really enjoyed riffing with Steve on topics close to both our hearts; including the sensory role of fascia, language and metaphor to promote health and healing, and athletic performance. We look at that essential key; which is what it means to feel safe….something Steve’s books really help to promote.
You can find out more about Steve and his work on his website: bodycollege.net
Almost 20 years ago, I studied archetypal patterns and Sacred Contracts with Dr Caroline Myss. What became apparent was that every single one of us expresses ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually through archetypal shapes and patterns of body and behaviour. It became a wonderful resource to all my teaching in bodywork and movement therapies. Now, for the first time, we have created a course in which you can map your own Archetype Profile – of psyche and soma. When they come together, you will find clarity and confidence with your own inner compass!!

This interview with Mina Blair is one that I hope leads you to read her beautiful book "Not for the Last Time" (available on Amazon). Mina, as a mother of two girls, in a corporate world, got on with her life (as any of us do) to manage her family and pay the bills. The book is an exquisite story of the courage to stay with life, whatever happens, finding your way from the inside out. Mina is clear, concise and relentlessly "real" in describing her journey from corporate life, through counceling, to becoming a yoga teacher. We met some of the same teachers along the way, in our respective journeys - and Mina (without being mawkish or dramatising anything) led me back via different routes through so many of the same fears and features of my own story. I didn't put her book down until I had finished it - and I am left in awe of this gorgeous, dedicated woman who knows who she is and yet, every day, lives in wondering what that means on the mat. (For herself and her "mat-chat" clients! Brava Mina! Brava - delighted to know you.
It was a pleasure to interview Jan Trewartha, Director of the British Fascia Symposium and creator of The Fascia Hub. It is an exciting time to be part of these events as the Fascia Hub has now opened its Membership (go to their website for more information) where you can dive deeper with lots of bonus material, insider interviews and events that don't get to the public domain. This episode will give you the very human back story to Jan and her dedicated work in the field. It will inspire all fascia fans to join in with this delightfully varied and informative "HUB" of all things related to Fascia....and of course, putting it into practice. Jan's hallmark is her care of the practitioners - as you will hear! Thank you Jan!!
I loved interviewing Sarah Cox as someone whose life is devoted to empowering others. On so many levels. Sarah embodies the alchemical principle of "transforming the lead of our wounds into the gold of our gifts" (to quote Caroline Myss) Her work (with Zephorium products) is worldwide and exceptional - yet it came from a deep inner strength and determination to survive and thrive and serve others. Here is why she had to give up her passion for ballet and turn it into helping others move forward in their own lives. It is such a beautiful example of someone removing pain and improving performance against the odds of all sorts of physical conditions. You might find it as inspiring as I did.
This podcast is all about understanding fascia and the four different ABC Masterclasses we are offering. What difference can they make to you? We look at the myofascial matrix-in-motion and at giving you the "fasciategrity code" to understand Living Tensegrity. Then we spend time on EmbrYOU, the part of you that doesn't have to remember anatomy; but knows from your life-long internal network, how you self-assembled into a unique expression of the remarkable human blueprint. Each of us did!! So imagine having a way to body read that, in Posture Profiling? After all "what makes us all the same, is that every single one of us is unique". This soft graph is the key! I would so love for you to come and join us. Thursday evenings 7-9pm UK time, 1, 8, 15 and 22 July - starting this week with a gorgeous offer for you.

This episode is an interview with the fabulous Ana Outsubo. This episode is also available in Portuguese, for all the wonderful people in Brazil that will love listening to her! Please find that version above.
United we stand...and we are not the only ones! Trees have always fascinated me. The more we learn about them, the more we appreciate their shapes and functions, the more we can learn about ourselves. In this short episode, we consder Peter Wohlleben's book The Hidden Life of Trees and I read a short excerpt which is about improving "tree performance" and their reliance on light and water. He had me at the chapter title "United we stand, Divided we Fall" Guess what?
This episode is an interview with Kylie Hennessy, someone who fascinates me because she has so effectively combined science, therapy and a deep respect for people in her mulit-disciplinary career and practice. Art meets science in this gentle conversation about what it is, in Kylie's experience, that is happening at a molecular level, biochemically, in the body - and how that knowledge is used to help people, appropriately, through yoga therapy or other suitable interventions. We get to talk about Candace Pert and Molecules of Emotion and how significant a state of presence can be in the art and science of a multi-disciplinary practice. It was such a delight to share this time with Kylie, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Chapter 7, in the new edition of my book (Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy & Movement) introduces a new word to make sense of fascia. We talk about it here and how it gives us access to the magic of our own fascia in removing pain and improving all kinds of performance. Enjoy!
Thinking about moving and moving are quite distinct things! In this episode, with a quote from the 2nd Edition of Yoga, Fascia, Anatomy and Movement, we consider how the fascia talks to us instinctively, if only we can translate its exquisite language of sensation!!
Responses to this podcast are deeply appreciated (thank you to each of you) and I love it when I receive a burning question. This one was "What is the connection between Fascia and Biotensegrity" and it so dear to my heart, that I devoted the whole episode to the answer. If you are not an anatomy nerd, you live in a body - and this might inspire you .... and to the lovely person that asked me the question; hope this answers it for you my dear!
Turning Lead into Gold. Sometimes the very stuff that brings the pain, literally (and symbolically) holds the key to transformation. Then we get to be the alchemists, turning our own lead, into our own gold. Even a golden resource that's already there!! As you move toward the springtime....
After a brilliant weekend of presentations "by movers for movers" at Integrated Biotensegrity in Motion, John Sharkey joins me in praise of the hosts (Lisa, Paul and Rachel) and in the wider discussion about the art and the science behind Biotensegrity.
It is such a pleasure to talk to Shane about how our understanding of Light can be so closely related to Pain (sustained or removed) and Performance (strained or improved)! It is wonderful to hear his take on the body and its natural "Wisdom Drives" and how deeply we need to follow the light! (And I love to follow his adventure, moving to Costa Rica and discovering what it's like in a climate so different from ours - with 12 hours of light and 12 hours dark every day of the year. How does that difference relate to panic attacks and happiness? Tune in to this episode as we discuss the possibly bigger-than-we-think influence of the sun and the moon on our nature, our wisdom and ability to adjust to the times we are living in.
I was asked what my "word of the year" would be - and it brought up other people stating theirs... Especially in terms of Pain Removed and Performance Improved. (Like the pain of comparison and "is my performance good enough?") After a lot of thought and consideration, it came to me. Along with how awesome we all are; whatever judgements we might have or fear at any given time...
Jaap van der Wal is my friend and mentor and it is such a delight to talk with him about the Embryo. I do sound like an excited child...but truth is, I felt a bit like one. We were all embryos once...right? This episode guides us to really deeply appreciate that...
This is to say, Happy New Year to you and let you know why I am so excited about The Fascial Heart on January 16th 2021 hosted by The Fascia Hub. Learning, for me, is a heart-centred experience. I know I always remember things better if I enjoyed learning them. As such, I am always delighted when presenting with a host for whom those values are shared (thank you for having me Jan Trewartha. Fascia is a complex subject and understanding it in such a way that provides a clear path to the difference that knowledge can make, is so valuable. Let me know how it resonates with you and if you have any questions that I can include in the presentation I'm so thrilled about (all in the podcast!). That way we all win - I can make sure your questions are answered and you can enjoy listening even more! A small-but-significant win-win to start the year! My deepest and warmest heart-felt wishes to you all for 2021.
A podcast to send well wishes at the end of 2020, with love. Looking forward to being back with you in the New Year after our Christmas break. Sending blessings and warmest heartfelt wishes to each of you for the best possible in these unprecedented times.
Spirals are an important theme in body structure; they often get ignored - yet they are so essential to movement and energy capacity. Today's episode pays due respect to my dear friend and colleague Karen Kirkness, who appreciates spiral structure in some superb ways. Our whole body weave relies on spirals and, like trees, our limbs and vessels animate this motif for our growth patterns and movement signatures; essential ingredients of improved performance!
I had a goofy moment admitting how much I don't iron, unless I really really have to! In Structural bodywork, the client often says they feel "ironed" - but in truth, the fascia in our bodies is actually crimped (like it's sort of pleated). It is supposed to be! It makes sense if you think about it; to allow nerves and vessels to move through without being too damaged when we move and change position. So when we think we are stretching, we are really opening out the pleats; not lengthening the tissues. We will talk about the dangers of stretching (if you really want to understand fascia) another episode - but here we just take a look at what ironing has to do with it!!
Following the recent episode about Wibbs Coulson's work with the breath, this is the "future episode" in which I promised to interview him, all about it. It's a fabulous insight into his life as a Nurse (in A&E and Cardiology), a Yoga Teacher and a practitioner dedicated to making a difference to peoples' ability to help themselves. This is a gorgeous conversation about how small interventions with breath can make huge contributions to the body and its health and performance. Thank you Wibbs!
STRESS gets a lot of bad press. In our everyday language we use the word mostly with negative connotations. In this episode, we consider that there may be a way to turn it around. What does STRESS actually stand for?
We all "know" things take time - but understanding how our tissues work, over time, can transform our performance and ability to remove and prevent pain, improve balance and give us a completely different "baseline" to work from. It isn't rocket science either - simply understanding our "output volume control". What if a few minutes of low key movements, every 2-3 days, could transform your balance and grace just because it becomes a beautiful habit over time? Here's why!!
This episode is a celebration of art as a means to understand anatomy and why and how you can access some short, inexpensive and transformative courses that provide a bridge between Classical and Contemporary study of anatomy with me and my lovely friend Karen Kirkness. It's not a sales pitch, nor is it an episode exclusively for anatomy nerds!! It's more about how I found Art from the Heart as a means to understand our bodies and make sense of how we move!
Studying the embryo to understand more about human motion was a fascinating part of the research I had to do to write YOGA: Fascia, Anatomy and Movement. One way I learned, was to draw it and in this episode I describe how difficult it is to portray continuity of form visually. It is something Leonardo da Vinci describes in the notes he made on anatomy and he has always been a profound inspiration to me. In this episode I describe him and some other wonderful teachers I have been fortunate enough to learn from.
In this episode, Shane McDermott shares some fabulous insights in how we can balance subtle and gross body awareness. He takes use to a place beyond pain and performance....a place each one of us knows intimately; even if perhaps we have forgotten...
One listener asked "how do you start your classes?" and this episode answers that! I talk about the feet and how working with them, at the start of every class, can make such a difference to how we feel and how we walk. (It's something we can all do at home for a few minutes each day, too). In the exercises discussed, of course they are done to each side! This is more anecdotal than a lesson, however I hope it inspires a deeper understanding; if you will forgive the pun (you have to listen to the episode to get it!). Enjoy!
p.s. I made a mistake about the story Brian Froud is the author with text by Jessica Macbeth. It is dedicated to Wendy and Toby
In this episode we consider some aspects of what sliding and gliding mean in the healthy body. Are they different and, if so, does it matter in terms of removing pain and improving performance? (We talk about Body Acoustics and you get to hear the rain!)
Some fabulous questions came up from the Zoom Room Gloom episode about Cognitive Disonance. In this episode we look at Recognising Resonance as one way to allow for and possibly ease it.
When pain in one place comes from somewhere else, there is often a pattern - and a narrative that goes with it. In this episode we look at one case, in which the "pattern interrupt” resolved the story and how the improved performance can be sustained.
Why I’m right with the Personal Trainer who cares so much about his clients as individuals and taking care, over time, of the time spent in fitness and the timing of it! There’s more to health than data and get fit quick schemes. One size never fits all, right?
Three big keys to understanding Zoom Room Gloom. It’s a thing! Join me in unraveling some of the subtle distinctions that can really help to understand it and prevent it (and forgive ourselves if it sneaked up unnoticed and we didn’t get the counterbalance memo!)
Our bodies have archetypal patterns and so does our nature. In this episode my good friend and colleague Helen Eadie is the one asking the questions. What are archetypes? And how can knowing more about our archetypal patterns help us to remove pain and improve performance?
When the Doctor tells you “there’s nothing wrong – it will be fine in a few days” – but it still hurts (a lot) and you don’t know what to do, or what not to do! What do you do?
I’ve threaded an A-Z of fascia through these podcast episodes, for the nerds like me, who want to know why it matters! What is the difference between anatomy and architecture and why is it archetypal? Why is it so significant to removing pain and improving performance?
Our feet have to under-stand us – every day. This episode contains a simple, easy tip to make your feet feel better so they can under-stand you better – and bring you the benefits of less pain and better performance!
In today’s episode, I share about why understanding fascia makes such a difference in understanding ourselves.
My name is Joanne Avison, “wonderer and storyteller” ever curious about what “human performance” means to each of us.
