At Job Interviews, your recent and past professional work experience will be the source of most Interview questions. What you did, types of projects you were involved in, challenges, accomplishments, etc. What some Job Seekers are missing is, taking a proactive effort in tying all they bring to the table with what they can accomplish at the company they're interviewing with - i.e. FUTURE POTENTIAL!
Don't leave it upto the Interviewer to visualize this themselves. Take an active role in influencing this. In today's segment I share some ideas on doing this.

When you start working out, you don't go to the gym and suddenly start lifting 200lbs. You start with your comfort zone. Maybe that's 2lb weights, 5lbs, 20lbs - whatever. You start somewhere and work yourself up to where you want to be. Its the same with Professional Networking, especially at in-person events.
If you're shy, introverted or a bit anxious about interacting with other people - you can't expect to throw yourself into these events (unless you have the courage to do so, in which case, kudos to you).
But my suggestion is you start with simple things to start exercising that "networking muscle". In this episode I share 3 tips on increasing the strength of this muscle.

Every now and then you'll come across a Hiring Team which will pose you this question: Why should we hire you?
Responding to this question is not about memorizing some "fancy" script you found on the internet talking about how your "adaptability coupled with your drive to succeed" (or some other generic description) makes you a fantastic candidate.
No - we first need to examine the essence of this question and what is REALLY being asked.

I posted this tip to my TikTok channel earlier this week. While there are many ways and tips and tricks people suggest in reducing that "interview anxiety", I wanted to share this one piece of advice which should help you, at least a bit.
The reason you're feeling that anxiety at Job Interviews - aside from ofcourse feeling nervous about speaking to a complete stranger - is not because you lack confidence and its not because you're "weak". So firstly, quit that type of internal self-talk because you'll start believing it and it won't help you in any way.
One of the factors contributing to your Interview anxiety is simply being too outcome-focused. Most of you only have one or two interviews scheduled at a time. So if you screw up, you have nothing else in your "pipeline". THAT is why you are so nervous and anxious. Let me ask you this: if you knew you had like 4 other Interviews setup with other Organizations, would you be as anxious or nervous? It might still be there, but probably not as much.
Why?
Because you know you've got 3 or 4 other Interviews lined. You have options and because of that, you're not too worried about the outcome.
So while its easier said than done, I want you to focus on having a consistent pipeline of 3-4 Interviews always on the go during your Job Search.

This episode is a replay of my Live Stream segment. Thinking of yourself as a "Job Seekers"? Thinking of the Hiring Manager as a "Hiring Manager"? While these might be the widely accepted terms - they are incorrect, in my opinion. In this week's show I discuss the kind of mindset you need to have in your Job Search and at your Job Interviews. Your mindset influences how you perceive things at your Interviews, so its important to get this adjusted.

If you're presenting your salary/rate as a range - i.e. $100K-110K, $40/hr-$45/hr - there is a certain outcome you need to be prepared for (and even OKAY with). If not, don't present your requirement in a range. Check out this 60-second tip I posted on TikTok to see what I'm talking about.

I came across this great video on YouTube where Mel Robbins talks about the power of visualizing where you want to be in the future. I discuss my thoughts on this on today's episode. Visualizations, affirmations - these are things I used to do at a certain time during my teens when I was really quiet and afraid to speak up in class, because I wanted to be able to speak up. I've been writing my daily and long-term goals and targets down everyday for a few years now, but I thought this visualization exercise would be pretty cool to get into as well.

Follow-up isn't just about asking for an update or getting them to let you know whether they want to move ahead with you or not.
Of course that's a part of it and the ideal outcome is most certainly getting that final decision.
But if that's the only thing you're thinking about when you're thinking about your follow-up strategy, then you're underutilizing this very powerful strategy. In today's episode I speak on how you need to be thinking about follow-up as a Job Seeker.

What I've noticed many people do is simply focus on talking about their job duties and responsibilities - which is certainly important. But don't ignore the fact that you worked for a great company, regardless of the fact that it might not be well known.
Its upto YOU to first establish the foundation which is to let the Recruiter/Interviewer/whoever know a bit about the company.

"Tell me about yourself" - "Can you run me through your experience?" - "Tell me about your experience at..."
On that initial pre-screen/1st interview, typically Recruiters (or Hiring Managers) will ask you these standard questions.
But standard doesn't mean underestimate the opportunity presented by these questions.
If you start responding to these right away, you will NOT know what to focus on and what's relevant to the Organization. You want to go for RELEVANCE!
In this segment I talk about ONE question you should always ask BEFORE you respond to these opening questions, which will help you get their attention.

Do NOT try and be funny and say "chocolates" or something like that in an attempt to brush off this question. You also do not want to provide eye-rolling responses such as "I work too hard" or "I'm too helpful".
Also don't feel intimidated by this question either.
This question is a HUGE opportunity for you to persuade the Interviewer of your value as a potential employee, in fact!

Introducing yourself to Recruiters on LinkedIn or maybe sending them emails but wondering why you're not getting any responses?
It could be your message just sucks, to be very frank. Its too vague or too long, and doesn't grab attention.
But it could also be you're not fitting into one of 3 "buckets" every Recruiter mentally goes through when prioritizing any messages/emails of introduction which they receive on LinkedIn or email. I'm talking about INTRODUCTION messages here.

"Ghosting" is a phenomena which appears to be widely accepted in our culture, increasingly. People don't show up or suddenly disappear with no reason or cause - at least that's what it appears like to us. This applies to Job Searching as well.
Over the years I continuously hear complaints from Job Seekers especially regarding Staffing Agencies doing this and ghosting people who've spent time, energy, and resources in attending Interviews, technical tests, etc - only to not at least receive some form of feedback, but just being "ghosted".
If you've been ghosted by a Staffing Agency, you're not alone. I talk about results from a LinkedIn poll I conducted recently, and I also discuss my recommendation on how to minimize these occurrences of Staffing Agencies "ghosting" you.

Getting people's time and attention can be very challenging - so how do you really nail it?
In today's segment I talk about ONE thing I see many people violating:
Not being clear about their intentions.
You're more likely to get a dollar out of someone, rather than a 1 minute of the time. We're all very protective over our time - so when you ask others for their time, you need to take the right approach. Part of this is ONE thing I discuss in today's segment. While this ONE thing won't guarantee everyone you reach out to and ask for their time will magically start saying "yes", you'll see an improvement in your response ratio.

Today's segment, let's talk about not making assumptions.
Sometimes what might appear to be the reason why they like you as a Candidate, or what the major challenges the Hiring Team wants you to help them out with, won't always be obvious or even brought to the spotlight without some digging and investigating.
Taking the time to uncover the REAL reasons, will allow you to better highlight the right stuff.

Ever Googled the best way to respond to certain type of Interview questions you commonly hear about?
If you're simply taking in the overall structure of some great responses and purpose behind it, that might be great (depending on who is providing the advice and whether they qualify) - but if you're memorizing these responses like a script and regurgitating them at Interviews, this can backfire.

Ever been responding to an Interview question and then start wondering: "What was the question again?" or "Did I cover everything which was being asked?" or one of the worst: "Did I forget something important?".
I know I've experienced this plenty of times as a Job Seeker myself - and as a Recruiter, I see this happen quite often where Candidates I interview simply go off track or don't seem to be responding to what was being asked.
Which often times leaves me as a Recruiter wondering: are they avoiding the question or do they not know their stuff?
The fact is, most of you DO know your stuff and you're NOT avoiding the question - but you might be giving that impression.
There might be many reasons why this might be happening - in today's segment, I discuss what I think is a major culprit and what you need to be doing IMMEDIATELY to prevent this from happening.

There are 3 steps you should follow in responding to Job Interview questions. Of the 3 I talk about in today's segment, #2 is the most important - however in my observations as a Recruiter, most people out there usually do #1, skip #2, and go straight to #3. And #2 is the most important one. Check out this segment and make sure you apply these to your Job Interviews!

Ever been asked a question at the Job Interview which had multiple parts to it? You provide your response but forget that you might have missed a component or two and don't realize it? You don't bring it up, because you don't realized you've missed out on a part which was asked. The Interviewer doesn't say anything or remind you because they want to be polite and think you simply do not have knowledge of that area which is why you skipped it in your response - so how do you deal with this?
Check out today's segment for a quick tip on dealing with this on your phone, video and in-person interviews.

As a Recruiter in the Staffing Industry for over 8 years, I've personally interviewed and "pre-screened" thousands of Candidates - so I've had the opportunity to see and point out some common mistakes people make on the initial pre-screen interview. These are by no means the only mistakes people make, but the most common ones I have observed and which I've heard from my peers in the industry as well.
Avoid these 6 mistakes and you give yourself a higher chance of moving further along the Interview process.

Whatever your field, skill set, or industry - there are probably a multitude of events going on, some of which you need to be present at.
This is one of the best ways to connect with peers or even Hiring Teams who may be present at these events, and who MIGHT be looking to hire.
You want to focus on those events local to your city and which make financial sense for you to attend - as well as ensuring they are legitimate events. And you next want to be seen and make yourself a familiar face in your industry. The more you're seen and the more you're involved in your industry, the strong the network you'll build.

There's something very important every single Job Seeker needs to do - and often times does NOT do - before they even start Job Searching.
I have observed this every now and then where a candidate I am representing as a Recruiter is completely uncertain about what exactly they want in an ideal career opportunity.
While I personally do take the time to help guide them through and figure this out, not every Recruiter out there will do that - because frankly, its typically not a Recruiter's job to help you figure out what you want.
This stuff needs to be handled way before you start Job Searching, or at least by the time you're sitting in for that Interview.
In this segment which I posted on my YouTube channel, I share something very important you need to do in order to handle this.
It might sound simple and basic, but its a crucial foundation to any successful Job Search strategy.

A Recruiter's search is dependent primarily on the requirements set by the Hiring Team, in terms of what they're looking for in an ideal candidate. The Recruiter then takes these requirements and bases their search on this.
While there might be a multitude of areas which get a Recruiter's attention about you, it usually boils down to 3 areas I talk about in today's segment.

This segment is from a clip I uploaded to my YouTube channel today.
Networking with Recruiters should be one of the tools in every Job Seekers arsenal - and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Recruiter myself.
When there's a strong mutual fit between you and what a Hiring Team is looking for, a Recruiter can have you skip over the hundreds of Resumes in an ATS and get straight in front of a Hiring Manager.
But you have a finite amount of time and you want to make sure you're networking with the RIGHT Recruiters - immediately, and over the long-term.
In this clip I share 2 things you want to look out for when networking with Recruiters to make the most of your networking efforts.

In many sectors such as Tech, Finance, Professional Services, and other industries the pandemic has proven that Organizations have the ability to operate efficiently while savings costs to both parties (employer and employee), and so there is a definitely trend in such industries of 100% remote work being "here to stay".
However - how does this affect your Job Search strategy? Or does it?

In today's segment I'm revisiting a concept which is so important when selling Interviewers on what you bring to the table that it could be the difference between you being just another person doing the same stuff as everyone else, and you being the person they want to bring onboard ASAP.
And it comes down to one thing:
Impact.
Are you talking about your impact or are you only talking about the day-to-day stuff which you do? Especially in your conversations with those in senior executive positions, while they might appreciate your daily contributions - they're thinking about big picture impact and how you fit in.
Check out this segment to hear my thoughts on how you can easily do this when talking about your professional experiences.

This is from a YouTube video I posted earlier today. If you're a Job Seeker, you probably attend many information sessions or watch several "Job Search experts" (including myself) for tips on how to get yourself those Interviews - but how do you separate the "real" from the "fluff".
For ANY Job Search tip or strategy to be successful, it has to accomplish ONE very fundamental thing.
I talk about this one thing in this segment - always hold this fundamental up to any Job Search strategy: if it accomplishes this fundamental, the strategy might very very well be a good one or worth putting the effort in executing.

In today's Friday segment, I'm speaking about the 4 components you HAVE to be covering/conducting during your Job Interviews. I don't care what field you're in or what jobs you're applying for. This goes for entry-level all the way up to C-level.
If you can cover these 4 components, you will be in a stronger position to win and move to the next step in the process. I'm not saying 100% of the time, as other factors might come into play. But more often than not, the Hiring team will see you as a strong potential candidate if you can accomplish ALL 4 of what I speak about here.

Hey - here's something I've noticed 90% of the time people are doing on their Resume/CV and when talking about themselves at Interviews:
Only talking about things you did - i.e. only talking about tasks, duties, responsibilities you performed.
But there's a major missing component, and I'm covering that on today's segment.
Here's the deal: no company hires you to ONLY perform tasks, duties, responsibilities. There's another component to it, and if you add this to your strategy, it'll make it easier for the company you're interviewing with to see the potential YOU will have at their organization if they were to hire you.

Job Seekers: know what your ideal/dream situation would look like - "the dream career opportunity".
This does not mean the perfect opportunity exists out there.
No organization is perfect and you won't find each every item on your list of criteria when assessing an opportunity.
But if you really take the time to define what "perfect" looks like for you, you'll more effectively be able to evaluate the Organizations you're interviewing with.
You at least have a measuring stick now.
Look - it doesn't mean everything is going to be exactly the way they say it will be at the Interview. In fact some Organizations might exaggerate unfortunately.
However - that doesn't mean you shouldn't get clear on what your "ideal picture" looks like in your career.
So take the time to get really clear on that!

Interviews: are they really about you just sitting there and responding to a whole bunch of questions? And can you still perform well if that's all you do?
Sure you can - but in my experience as a Recruiter, the best Interviews have almost always had this in common: they had the 2-way flow of a conversation.
Not just one person asking all the questions. And the other person responding to all the questions.

The greatest challenge Job Seekers face is simply not getting responses to their Job Applications. In fact, in a recent poll I did on LinkedIn where ~420 people voted, 76% said this was their greatest challenge! That's not a small number!
So if you're tuning in, you might be experiencing the same thing.
In today's segment I wanted to touch on why you need to go above and beyond simply hitting "Submit" or "Send" and taking a more proactive stance in your search for employment.

In today's segment, my message to you is this: don't let 'giving up' be your first response to any rejection you face when Job Searching.
In this episode I share a success story from a Client of mine who got a Job Offer from a company who initially rejected him after the initial Phone Interview/Pre-Screening.
Now - I'm not saying you can turn things around each and every time.
But what if you can, at least in a few of those cases?
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, folks. Imagine how many times you've given up after that initial rejection and just walked away - if at least a handful of those times you could've turned things around, would it be worth it?
I share how my Client did this - and its something very simple you need to start implementing ASAP. Won't work every time - but it might work some of the time.

"I need your updated Resume back within the next 30 minutes"
"Hey tried calling you an hour ago and didn't hear back from you..."

"Hey I know I've called 20 times in the last 5 minutes, but call me back...."
What's up with Staffing Agencies always seeming to be in a rush? And when you finally do get back, why is it they usually say they've reached the limit of candidates - or even worse, they don't respond at all?
Look - there's many reasons, but in today's episode I wanted to cover 2 components which contribute to this as a result of the way the Staffing Industry operates and why this means you do unfortunately have to move fast for opportunities which interest you!

Not all Recruiters are great.
Not all your experiences with Recruiters will be great.
In fact, you've probably had a few disappointing experiences with some bad Recruiters out there.
But that doesn't mean rule out ALL Recruiters.
You have to go through some bad ones to find the good ones - just like in some other areas of our lives.
You need to see Recruiters as the means to and end - the end being, a great Recruiter/Staffing Agency can get you in front of their Clients who are usually Hiring Teams.
But which Recruiters should you focus your time and attention on? I discuss the 2 categories of candidates Recruiters pay the most attention to in this episode so you can seek those Recruiters out!

You've been interviewing with your "dream" company, they've been fantastic throughout the process and very professional and respective, or at least overall you found the interview process pretty decent - but the final decision is: they're not moving ahead with you.
Now what?
Well there's many things you need to be doing right now - including continuing with your job search without giving up.
But going back to this "dream" company, something you definitely DON'T want to do is take that rejection personally and burn bridges.
A "no" today, does not mean a "no" forever.

You have a finite amount of time every day which you can dedicate to your job search: whether you're currently employed or unemployed. So you need to be spending that time wisely, especially in relation to connecting with and networking with Recruiters. How do you do this? Firstly you want to connect with Recruiters who are highly interested in speaking with someone with your skills.
In today's segment I discuss one simple way you can figure this out on LinkedIn. While this method does not guarantee 100% every single Recruiter you research using this tactic will want to speak with you, it will certainly increase your chances and ensure you're spending time on the right ones.

Why do great people end up working in jobs or working for companies which they hate? Or that they don't feel happy about? Look - no Employer is going to be perfect. But how can you define the "perfect employer" if you haven't taken the time to REALLY define this. I'm not saying the perfect Employer exists, but at least you'd have some set of criteria to evaluate the opportunities presented to you while Job Searching.
In today's segment I talk about this and the importance of getting really clear on defining what the perfect opportunity would look like for you. Many Job Seekers make the mistake of not doing this before Job Searching. This should be the first step.

Its a common question you will get asked at some point at Job Interviews: "So, why do you want to work for us?".
Now, don't be fooled and think this question is about the Interviewer trying to get to know you and what you know about them. That's only part of it. Make no mistake, they want to know you've done your research and have a genuine interest in the Organization.
But that's not all they're asking. There's another component you have to ensure you address which is yet another opportunity for you to sell them on your value and get a real business conversation going.

Recording of my Live Stream from earlier today: How do you respond to "What are your weaknesses?" at your Job Interviews?
Why do Interviewers even ask this question? And why tell them something which highlights something negative about yourself?
I wrote an article about this earlier this week, but wanted to speak more on this on today's Live Stream, because this interview question is actually a great opportunity for you to sell the #Interviewer on your potential value.
But responding with "My greatest weakness is I work too hard" or "My greatest weakness is I go above and beyond" - is just going to make interviewers internally roll their eyes.
Let me show you how to tackle this question which can be a mystery to many #JobSeekers.

Seriously - what's the point of #interviewers asking you "what are you weaknesses?", "what are your flaws?". And variations of those type of questions?
Why would anyone admit any of those and run the risk of making themselves less desirable as a potential employee?
Here's the thing, folks: do not take these type of questions at face value.
Now, will they be paying attention to these weaknesses and flaws you mention? Probably.
But there are 2 other things which precede this they will be paying MORE attention to. And if you're not hitting these 2 things, you're not taking advantage of this question and turning it into an opportunity to actually showcase your value as a potential employee.

Replay of my Live Stream from earlier today. In a recent article I read on ITBusiness.ca, in a survey of 500 American HR pro's conducted by Envoy Global, nearly 60% said they're considering Canada for expansion.
With its close proximity to America and highly skilled Talent pool - Canada looks good to a lot of American companies looking for expansion AND talent. So how can Job Seekers in Canada take advantage of this and start generating conversations with potential Hiring Teams in America who might be interested in having a discussion about this, and potentially considering them as future hires?
I'm going to share my thoughts on how Canadian Job Seekers can take advantage of this proactively.

As a Job Seeker, no matter how much great information you consume, nothing will change unless you do THIS.

In this clip, I go over my "Bottle of Water" Analogy for Job Interviews. Some of you might have heard me do this presentation if I've spoken to your group.
Ever been to a Job Interview, done a fantastic job speaking about your achievements, accomplishments - even the outcomes and ROI you've helped achieve, but still feel like the Hiring Team wasn't completely sold on you or uncertain?
Or maybe they decided to go with another candidate and you just couldn't believe it after the stellar effort you put in at the Interview?
Here's the deal: Its not because they weren't impressed by your achievements and accomplishments. Its because you might have made this very simple error when interviewing.
Check out this clip and remember this analogy for your future #interviews.

I try to spend some time everyday on Quora and/or Reddit responding to questions posed by Job Seekers and one of the most common is: "How do I response to being asked XYZ by an Interviewer?" - or some variation in wording of that question. Hey, its very important how you respond to questions at your interviews.
My concern however is people thinking that they can use some slick, witty, "surface-level" response at their Interviews for common questions and think the Interviewer is going to get impressed. They probably won't, because they can tell that response is someone else's and not yours.
In this quick segment I talk about and caution you against keeping it to memorizing surface-level responses. You have to incorporate another very important component to your responses.

In this segment I speak about a topic I covered a few days back on my Live Stream - look, the Interview is not about you. And its also not about the Organization. Its about a very specific intersection connecting you with them. Not focusing on this is how you end up going well prepared to speak about yourself at interviews and still fall flat - and left feeling confused as to how they could possibly not be impressed by what you bring to the table!
Hint: the problem isn't that your accomplishments weren't impressive! Its just that you didn't focus on the right ones.
Focusing on this specific intersection at your Interviews will allow you to perform better and really get their attention.

With everyone talking about the importance of ensuring your Resume/CV should only be 1-page or 2-pages max, I've been seeing an increase in multi-column Resumes which allow people to do exactly that and keep their Resume to 1-page. And I'm seeing a lot of these type of templates going around as well.
But this comes with its downsides - one especially in relation to ATS platforms. So the question is: yes they look nice, but more importantly, are they practical?
Majority of the time, when you apply for a job online, it will find its way onto an ATS platform either automatically or manually. However, there is an automated function all ATS platforms perform which make the Resume readable within the ATS so Recruiters don't have to download Resumes every time they want to review one. And this mechanism can conflict with the multi-page Resume templates out there.
Listen on to see what I mean in today's segment.

Where are the job opportunities out there? How do you identify them? Do they even exist?
Look - I know its tough right now, but yes, there are opportunities out there. As we speak folks, there are multi-million dollar transactions taking place is certain industries for certain companies who are going through mergers, acquisitions, expansions, IPOs - and they're not doing all that for the heck of it. Investments flow towards opportunities which produce great returns (or a high chance of it) for investors.
That's where you need to be looking for opportunity.
In this segment I provide some examples of things going on in the job market, which you need to use as the basis for where you want to be looking for opportunities. Not all job opportunities are going to be publicly posted. Research the right industries and network with the right people to uncover more opportunities.

Feeling that stress and anxiety kicking in from Job Searching? Its a real thing and it happens to so many Job Seekers. I know because I've experienced this myself as a Job Seeker, and also because I hear about this from so many Job Seekers through all my social channels.
You're applying for the jobs. You're submitting like 10,000 applications. You're getting ghosted. And time is just passing by. Of course you're going to feel stressed! So firstly, don't be hard on yourself for feeling what you feel.
In my opinion, while there may be many sources for this stress, a major source I believe is putting your attention on all these things which are beyond your control while result in you feeling a lack of control.
In today's segment I'm talking about what you need to put your attention on instead and I share a simple exercise you can do to help alleviate some of that stress & anxiety.

When communicating your value to Recruiters, HR, and Hiring Teams - are you communicating your value in the most effective manner? Ever been to an Interview, thought you did a great job explaining all your projects and accomplishments - and you can't believe they don't want to move ahead with you?
Even when you responded to all the questions they might have asked you?
The problem is not that they're not impressed by your achievements - the problem is, you haven't communicated the "intersection" between YOU and THEM.
Look - you have your own agenda in your Job Search and the Hiring Team has their own agenda. But these two agendas do have a commonality which you need to communicate.

Networking with Recruiters during your Job Search but not having much success? You're sending out direct messages, emails, maybe even calling - but can't seem to get their attention?
I wrote an article earlier today about the 2 categories of individuals most Recruiters focus the majority of attention on (link below). If you're not meeting these 2 types, then the chances are, the Recruiter will not make the time to connect with you.
Look - just like any profession, Recruiters need to prioritize their time. And most of a Recruiters time is focused on connecting with the RIGHT Talent and the most RELEVANT talent. Check out this clip for more info on what I mean by this and how to focus your efforts in the right way.

In today's segment I'm sharing with you some of the top benefits to being represented by a GREAT #Recruiter at a Staffing Agency. Understanding these benefits will allow you to better identify whether the Agency you're working with is a value-add to YOU or just throwing Resumes to their Clients randomly.
Look, to keep it real folks, there are definitely Agencies out there that do not conduct themselves professionally and ethically and has put a stain on the industry. That being said - don't write off all Agencies. There are GREAT Recruiters working for GREAT Agencies out there - and you need to constantly be evaluating and qualifying which ones you want to developer those long-term relationships with - and which ones are a "one-off" situation only because they're recruiting on something which interests you.
Hope this session provides you with some criteria on how to make that assessment!

Interview Tip: How do you respond when they ask you about something you don't have knowledge/experience with?!
Well you definitely don't want to misrepresent yourself and lie - that's a big NO!
But if you leave it at "Sorry, I don't have knowledge/experience with XYZ..." - then you're leaving money on the table (so to speak).
In today's episode I'm sharing an additional step you ALWAYS need to incorporate when faced with this situation, which will lead to 2 scenarios. By going a step up, you're demonstrating your value despite lack of knowledge/experience in the area they're asking you about. The point you're trying to communicate here is: "Here's why you should hire me despite not having that specific experience/knowledge....".

Volunteer Experience on your Resume: does it count?

Your LinkedIn "headline" is an important part of your LinkedIn profile - its basically the first thing people see when they see you in search results on LinkedIn. And even when visiting your profile, an enticing headline might mean the different between them leaving your page or continuing to scroll down.
But it won't make any difference or capture any attention if your headline isn't done right.
And if you're putting "Looking for new opportunities" or some variation of that as your LinkedIn headline - it might not be helping you.
I share some advice on what you need to be putting on your LinkedIn profile's headline area.

Job Seekers: applying to job opportunities online and not getting much in terms of responses? Or no responses AT ALL?
In this special segment, I'm sharing my 3-step process for increasing responses from Hiring Teams. If all you're doing is applying to job postings and waiting on a response - you're depending on luck and chance, which is not a strategy.
There are on average 250 applications submitted to every Job Posting - and that is the pre-pandemic average, before the mass layoffs.
As someone who has worked in Recruitment, let me keep it real folks: no Recruiter on this planet is going to go through all 250 applications to find you.
And the Hiring Managers themselves? They definitely won't be - sourcing and recruiting is not their primary/core function.
Let me show you what you need to be doing.

I'm going to keep it real and let you know what happens when you submit your Resume to an ATS and why that phrase "beating the ATS" doesn't really make sense.

You only have anywhere from between a few minutes to around 20 minutes on a pre-screening to communicate value and relevance to a #Recruiter. This mostly depends on how you handle those initial few minutes of the call - and this often determines whether you get moved forward to the next step.

Ever been told "We really like you, you're great, but we just feel you're overqualified for the role."?
Why interview you in the first place then?
Why would an organization reject you for having more than enough knowledge and experience for the position you're interested in? Well the fact is - that is not the actual issue. The REAL, underlying reason why Organizations say you're "overqualified" is totally different.
In this segment I discuss what that real, underlying reason is - and how you can address/handle it.
Happy Holidays, Season's Greetings - and for those of you celebrating Christmas: Merry Christmas!

Simple tip to help you prepare for and anticipate the Interviewer's perspective and the questions they might potentially ask. How far would that go in helping you prepare for the conversation? Many Job Seekers lose out on the ability to anticipate and predict simply due to not confirming ONE piece of information when they're confirming themselves for an Interview date/time slot. Implement this tip and put yourself in a stronger position to go in well-prepared.

In today's episode, I'm covering the topic most Job Seekers are frustrated about: Suddenly getting "ghosted" by Recruiters.
First I'll be covering WHY this happens in the first place and will be sharing my observations on this phenomenon having worked in the Staffing Industry - NOT to justify this behaviour, but so you are a well-informed Job Seeker about what's really happening behind the scenes.
Secondly, having an understanding of the reasoning, I'll be covering a 4-step process you need to carry out in your conversations with Recruiters early on to reduce the chances of getting "ghosted".
Look - I'm not saying this is going to be a 100% guaranteed, fool-proof method, but I guarantee this will help reduce "ghosting" from occurring.

Happy Canada Day! In today's Live Stream I addressed how you REALLY need to be responding when you face "no Canadian experience" as a barrier to your job search as a newcomer to Canada. You'll notice this is the same framework I suggest for handling any and most objections you'll hear in your job search:
1) Acknowledge you don't have Canadian experience
2) Put the focus on what you DO have experience with
3) Probe/investigate to find out what they do like about you
4) Close them on moving you forward in the process
Don't lose heart when you face any barrier in your job search. Apply this framework and keep moving forward. To tune in LIVE to my weekly Live Stream on Wednesdays at 11AM ET follow my LinkedIn profile or Facebook page. Links below!

You need to be so sold on yourself as being the most qualified person for whatever position you're interviewing for, that for the organization to choose anyone other than yourself would be a disservice to them: that needs to be your attitude and mindset. This does not mean be arrogant and unprofessional. But you need to have a genuine belief that YOU are the ONE. If you don't believe that - no one else will. In today's episode I'm speaking about 6 questions you need to ask yourself to help you build that self-confidence so you understand the impact you can have on the organization.

For must of us, the situation is such: there are much fewer available opportunities in the current environment due to Covid-19 and a greater amount of available talent competing over the same roles. Chances are, you will be experiencing much greater competition for the roles which you're applying for. Depending on your resume/CV may not be effective due to:
1) As mentioned above, more competition and more applications for available positions
2) Because there is more available and willing candidates, unless you are one of the first few to apply for a role, its possible the organization might not even get around to your resume/CV as they might fill up their interview slots within their first 10 phone calls.
In today's episode I suggest some solutions to this to help ensure that while you continue using your resume/CV, you're also using other means to get yourself in front of the right people.

"Dean - what's the best way to contact Recruiters?". This is a common question I get asked - and its an important question to cover especially in today's environment (I'm speaking of the current situation as of April 2020) where there is an increased amount of available talent and fewer opportunities resulting in higher competition for open opportunities. Should you use LinkedIn? Should you stick to email? Is using the phone even appropriate in 2020? I'm going to cover this in today's episode.

Things are a lot different now than they were a few weeks ago. A LOT different from a few months ago. The job search market is totally different from what you're probably used to - and you need to adapt to it. A major adaptation you need to make is moving fast and with a sense of urgency on opportunities which interest you. I've spoken about speed & urgency in the past, way before any of this came to be. However its now more important than ever.

As a Job Seeker, you'll probably come across job descriptions for roles which interest you, which list a ridiculously laundry list of requirements which may seem impossible to meet. Should you even bother replying? If there's one thing I've experienced as a Recruiter working in the Staffing/Recruitment Industry, its that the "official" job description rarely tells the full story about a job opportunity. In today's episode I discuss 3 ways you can get more clarity on what the real deal is with the role you're interviewing for - before or at the interview itself.

If you live in any major city in North America - or anywhere in the world for that matter - you've probably heard about various job/career fairs occurring in your city. But are such events worth attending? Are they worth the time? I've spoken to many candidates over the years who've provided mix feedback. Some have told me they had a great, positive experience. Other, not so much. The reality is: it depends. Not all career fairs are for you. In today's episode I discus 7 tips to help you make the most of and evaluate whether a job fair you may be interested in, would make sense for you.

There's a lot of advice out there regarding the job search, and all those various factors within conducting a successful job search. The bad news is, this can lead to a lot of confusion regarding whose advice to take. Its your responsibility as a job seeker to ensure you evaluate your sources to ensure the advice is applicable to you and that's its advice you should take - this applies to any advice I provide as well. I discuss a few tips in today's episode to help you make that assessment.

In order to make the most of working with a Recruiter, you need to understand the benefits that a Staffing Agency can provide to you as a candidate, and maintaining that relationship with your key recruiter contracts. I discuss some tips and strategies in doing so in today's episode.

"Why aren't I able to get a job?". I get asked this question a lot from job seekers. One of the first exercises I advise most candidates do is to take note of these 3 key metrics I discuss in today's episode to help identify at which segment of their job search process, some kind of barrier or block may be occurring. It won't provide you with an immediate solution or answer - what this exercise will help you do is pinpoint where exactly its occurring so you can further investigate.

Do you follow-up after your interviews or just during your job search in general? Follow-up is a very important factor to incorporate during your job search. Not every follow-up contact will prove successful however - it needs to be repeatedly, consistently, and with some creativity sprinkled in as well. In today's episode, I discuss 4 reasons why follow-up is an important strategy YOU need to utilize.

As an organization, if you want to get a really good overview of the available talent in the market - you need to consider both the active and passive talent market. Most organizations go after the "active" talent market which actually represents a smaller portion of the overall talent market. If you want to ensure you have a full view, you need to also consider "passive" talent as well. In today's episode I define both categories and provide you with the pluses and minuses of each.

Are you REALLY giving candidates a fair shot when you interview them? I was inspired to record this episode when I was thinking back to an interview I attended as a candidate a few years back and I noticed the interviewer didn't like me like RIGHT AWAY. And although I was well-prepared, nothing I said or did mattered. You are certainly not obligated to put an offer letter in front of every candidate you meet - however, every candidate deserves a fair shot at presenting themselves for the role. I discuss some tips on how you can do that and how it ultimately helps leave a positive impression of your organization's brand.

As a Recruiter working at a Staffing Agency, I get far less incoming communication over the phone than I do via email/social media from job seekers. So, using the phone to call in and introduce yourself to a Staffing Agency can really put you at an advantage when it comes to getting into communication with a Recruiter at an Agency. In today's episode I cover WHY this is a strategy you need to employ and whether its even okay to do this.

If you're looking for top talent and have an offer on the table for top talent - its possible other organizations might be seeking them as well and your selected potential hire might receive competitive offers or counter-offers from other organizations. How do you deal with this? If your first step is simply offering more money (which by the way is great - when an organization is willing to invest in great people), this isn't the correct response. You first need to establish if compensation is even the real issue here, or whether there are other issues or concerns which need to be addressed. I discuss 2 key questions to ask candidates to help you determine that before you get into re-negotiating the package.

You might have a lot of exciting projects you've completed that you'd like to speak about at your interviews - however, are you choosing the right ones to speak about and highlight? Are they relevant? How do you know which ones to talk about? No matter how great YOU might think an accomplishment is - if it doesn't speak to the problem the organization is experiencing and which they want you to solve by hiring you, it may not matter to them. I discuss 4 tips which will help ensure you select the right projects to discuss at your interviews.

In today's episode, I discuss common mistakes I have seen organizations make in pinpointing the right person for the role they're recruiting for. Why does this happen and what can be done to reduce this from occurring? I discuss 4 factors which may be contributing to this in recruitment cycles.
