Jeff interviews John Davids, research coordinator at the Black Community Resource Center (BCRC) in Montreal about their work and research in Quebec. Established in 1995, their mandate is to provide and implement professional innovative support services to individuals, communities, para-public and public organizations. They also develop and run health, education, socio-culture, and community economic development programs.

John mentions that a lot of the history of the Black Community in Montreal has revolved around some key historic institutions, including:

Negro Community Centre of Montreal - was formed in 1927 in response to the racial discrimination experienced by the Black community.[1] The Black population of Montreal is linked historically to decedents of Africans who were enslaved in Montreal. (Wikipedia)

The Coloured Women's Club of Montreal - was founded in 1902 in Montreal, Canada, by seven African-Canadian women and has made significant contributions to Montreal's Black community. It ran along the lines of the American National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, and its first president was Anne Greenup. (Wikipedia)

Union United Church - is Montreal, Quebec, Canada's oldest black congregation. It was founded in 1907 by several members of Montreal's black community who experienced racial conflict and were banned from entering all-white churches. (Wikipedia)

Welcome to Season 8 Episode 6 of What's Literacy Got To Do With It? by Literacy Quebec!

In today's episode, we celebrate Family Literacy Day with the one and only Raffi!

Family Literacy Day is this Thursday, January 27th, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family, and this year’s Family Literacy Day theme is: Learning in the Great Outdoors!

Raffi is a perfect person to help us come together to celebrate and approach learning and growing together with kindness, caring, and play.

A renowned singer known by his first name alone, Raffi is a pioneer in quality recordings for children on his independent label, Troubadour. For millions of fans, Raffi’s music is the soundtrack of their childhoods, and they have taken his signature song “Baby Beluga” to heart. In 2010, he founded the Raffi Foundation for Child Honouring—to promote an integrated philosophy that views honouring children as the best way to create sustainable, peacemaking cultures. Raffi has received the Order of Canada, the Order of BC, the U.N. Earth Achievement Award, and four honorary degrees. In summer 2020 Raffi released a 40th -anniversary version of “Baby Beluga” with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. That was followed by “For All You Do”, in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Lindsay Munroe. This song is a musical expression of gratitude to essential workers during the pandemic and was a fundraiser for Direct Relief.

Do stats really count? A Conversation with Statistics Canada

Welcome to the 5th episode of season 4 of the Literacy Quebec Podcast! In this week’s episode we are talking about statistics!

Numbers can be scary and confusing, but with help from Samuel Dupéré, Manager, Montréal Data Service Centre, Statistics Canada we learn why data is important and how we can learn to use data to advocate and show impact. We also learn that it is important to ask the right questions and how to look for reliable sources of information.

Statistics Canada is a public service that is available to community members and is a valuable resource especially to non-profit organisations. They have recently expanded their services to help build the capacity of individuals and organisations to become more literate in developing surveys, collecting, using and understanding data through workshops and presentations. Learn more about what they offer: https://www.statcan.gc.ca/eng/wtc?MM=as

Happy 2020! Welcome to the 3rd episode of season 4 of the Literacy Quebec Podcast!

In this week’s episode we recorded our regular book club at the LQ office. We discussed the book Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, which fits perfectly in with the topic we wanted to launch into 2020 with How to Fail Successfully in 2020. We also talk about Cal Newport’s Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World to learn about how to reduce busywork and increase purposeful work.

Some of the questions we discussed after reading the section of Dare to Lead were:

1) Did you make any resolutions for 2020? Why/why not?

2) What are some markers of success to you?

3) What is failure to you?

4) Are failures the opposite of successes?

5) How can failures be useful to you?

6) Brene Brown talks a lot about the connections between failure, shame and vulnerability. What did you think of her tools for self-reflection?

7) What are some of your own Shitty First Drafts?

Why did we choose this topic of Failure (a dirty word!) when everybody else is taking about Success and making New Year Resolutions? Well, through our discussion about how we each felt about failure, some of the failures in our own lives and learning new ways to deal with failure when it happens, we found that failure in almost every case was necessary in order for us to form deeper relationships with people, deeper and more meaningful work in our careers, becoming more stable and emotionally resilient, making better decisions in life, and living in a more content, grateful, happy state.

Fake news!

With the upcoming election on October 21st, our theme for the next few weeks is about literacy and civic engagement.

Continuing this theme today, we are talking about Media Literacy. This week October 7-11th, is Media Literacy Week. This topic is perfect for election season with the flood of advertisements, social media posts and news reports about the election, and the messages that political parties and lobbyists are trying to spread to get your attention. We discuss what is media literacy, why it is essential to read and view with critical and questioning eyes and ears.

We are speaking with Matthew Johnson, the Director of Education from MediaSmarts and Angelina Leggo from the Gaspesie Literacy Council. Our guests give us some insights and tips on developing our Media Literacy. We strengthen our ability to know what are facts and what are misleading messages during this election season and our everyday lives. How do we know what sources to trust?

As part of our election series, we will be talking about voting basics. In this episode, we will be talking about voting early in the Advanced Polls. Can’t make it on election day? This segment is for you!

Happy International Literacy Day! Welcome to our extraordinary episode as part of our celebrations the week of September 8th! We learn why it is important to reflect, advocate and celebrate all of the work that is going into promoting literacy worldwide. We talk to international, Canadian and Quebec guests for the celebration about this year's theme "Literacy and Multilingualism."

Did you know that they are over 7000 languages in the world and only about 5% are represented on the internet?

First, we talk with representatives from UNESCO, Borhene Chakroun, Director of the Education Division of Policies and Lifelong Learning systems and Gabriela Cieploch, Project Officer / Communication, Section of Youth, Literacy And Skills Development, Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning, Education Sector. We learn more about the ILD and a global perspective on literacy and about this year’s theme of Literacy and Multilingualism and the year of Indigenous languages.

Then we talk with Canadian researchers, who work on Literacy and Multilingualism, Dr Becky Chen and Diana Burchell at the University of Toronto. We learn about the value and challenges that come with knowing more than one language in a child’s development with the right support. We also chatted about the importance of parents’ leadership in the family when it comes to learning more than one language, especially when a different language is spoken at home than in school.

And of course we couldn’t miss an opportunity to chat with Gabrielle Thomas from LQ on how we are celebrating International Literacy Day with a week of events!

Every two weeks our hosts Jaimie Cudmore and Chris Shee from Literacy Quebec explore topics around community building, lifelong learning and literacy for English-speakers in Quebec. Contact us at admin@literacyquebec.org

Wow! Episode 4 (or is it 5) of Season 2! This special summer episode is a recording of our podcast workshop with Michelle Osbourne from the Quebec City Reading Council this past June. Michelle joined us at our office for a great chat on how to start a podcast using free and simple tools that are accessible to most people. We also had the opportunity to pick Michelle's brain about setting up a communication strategy using social media to share and promote community organisation's work. Pardon the office noise :)

We will be back to our regular format in a couple of weeks after this short summer break!
