Watching your child becoming immersed in mental distress can be so frightening for parents. What can you do? How can you best support them?

In this podcast Liz Scott speaks to someone who regularly engages with young people and parents. Marie Arymar gives an overview of how to assess the situation with a young person. During this conversation Liz and Marie discuss 7 ways to support the child. Here is a run down of the points they discuss:

  1. Listen deeply. Don't try to fix them or rationalise. Just listen. 2. Love them unconditionally even if their behaviour is mean or nasty. 3. Remember your beautiful child is still there - celebrate the moments of connection 4. Boundaries are important. Young people feel safe when they know the expectations. 5. As parents, keep communicating. Back each other up and support one another. 6. What if I'm separated from the other parent? Find a way to speak to each other. Consider how to put your differences aside to ensure you can both support the child. 7. Know 'this will pass' - it might be frightening to feel you're losing the child you once knew. Trust this will pass.

It's also so important to look after yourself and to realise that you're doing a good job (even if it doesn't always feel that way).

Are you scared that your youngster may be taking drugs? What can you do about it? How do you talk to them about it?

In this podcast Liz Scott speaks to someone who regularly engages with young people and parents. Marie Arymar gives an overview of how to assess the situation with a young person. During this conversation Liz and Marie discuss:

  • The importance of taking stock - ask yourself 'What is going on with my child?'
  • Consider why the youngster is taking drugs? Is it masking something, is he/she keeping in with the crowd?
  • What boundaries do you have with your child around drugs?
  • Is your child getting mixed messages about what is or isn't acceptable?
  • Is your fear getting in the way of connecting with them? Do you ask questions which causes them to shut down?
  • Be present and aware that your young person, the one you deeply love and care for, is still there. They are not their behaviour. Give yourself time to connect with them in ordinary ways.

If you're waking up to the climate crisis, the disintegration of the natural world and the fragility of our planet... then you probably feel a sense of urgency, insecurity and helplessness.

At least that's what I felt when 2 years ago the climate crisis hit me between the eyes. For years it had been a periphery thing - it was something that other people were getting worked up about. Then suddenly the enormity and reality of it landed.

In this interview with Kimberley Hare we head towards a heart-based exploration and explore 'What is mine to do?' rather than 'what is going wrong?'

During this interview Kimberley refers to 7 questions to ask yourself when you are reflecting on what you're being asked to do. We don't go into detail with these questions in the conversation - but she sent them on following the interview.

The questions are as follows.

Here are SEVEN POWERFUL QUESTIONS: RESILIENCE – What is it that we most value and how can we keep that? How can we build and sustain our resilience – both inner and outer? What’s MOST important now? RELINQUISHMENT – What can we give up in order not to make matters worse? RESTORATION – What can we bring back that has been lost? RECONCILIATION/RECONNECTION – What can we do to make peace with, love and support others? How can we live with kindness, joy and peace? RECLAMATION – What power could we collectively reclaim to reduce harm and improve possibilities? REVERENCE – What do you want me to know? Who do you want me to be? What do you want me to do? (Asked of source, or the universe, or Gaia) RE-IMAGINING – What’s the story of my life that I’m proud to tell now – no matter what happens? How can we imagine and create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible?

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) can often feel like a life-sentence. It manifests after a traumatic experience and you can suffer nightmares, flashbacks, anger, guilt and isolation.

Families, partners and friends can also feel the impact of a loved one going through this unpredictable and life-diminishing disorder.

But what if PTSD was something that needed understanding rather than curing? What if by understanding the nature of thought, you were able to experience real hope in navigating through life? What if you were to realise you could trust something much more powerful than these frightening flashback thoughts?

Dr Suraj Gogoi, a psychiatrist and Rob Cook, a US Air Force Veteran, join me (Liz Scott) and Stu Newberry to share a hopeful message around PTSD.

In this conversation we explore: - The power of being in the now - Separating the past from the present - The built-in safety of the psychological system - Trusting the energy that keeps you safe - Seeing through the veil of unsettled thought to the heart of who you truly are.

Dr Linda Pettit has a way of awakening the flame of love within those she is talking to and this conversation is no exception.

Linda has had an extraordinary life, which has seen her as a professor, a dean, a counselling psychologist, an author, coach and speaker.

In this episode Linda shares stories from her life.

We discuss the loss of her first husband in a car accident and the way she experienced her way through grief. She realised that grief was a moment-to-moment experience - it wasn't there 100% of the time. It was during these times of being struck by beauty, whilst in the midst of sadness, that helped her find her way through.

We talk about life after death and her sense that consciousness does not end at death.

We explore her Catholic upbringing and her searching for God. When she came across the 3Ps she began to settle and bring together the conflicting Christian messages from her childhood and to see the beauty of God as pure love in motion.

Linda looks to the formless energy in life that guides us. She is also inspired by the Divine Feminine. We discuss how the world has trampled on 'mother nature' and 'mother earth'. Linda sees that it is time to reclaim this energy.

If you want to listen into a conversation that explores the spiritual nature of what it is to be human, then look no further.

Dr Amy Johnson has first hand experience of debilitating anxiety and worry for many years. Here's how she describes it:

"I experienced severe anxiety, panic attacks, and binge eating/bulimia for several years. I was told by many well-trained, well-intentioned professionals that these issues would likely be with me for life in one form or another. They could become manageable; I could learn to cope—but they weren’t the kind of things people just “got over”.

Thankfully, nothing could be further from the truth today.

Several years ago I came across a down-to-earth spiritual understanding of life that changed everything for me. It is the basis of everything I teach and write about. It is the foundation for how I help people end their own unwanted habits and unnecessary worries."

The 'down-to-earth' spiritual understanding Amy refers to is the 'Inside-Out' understanding and in this podcast she explains what she means by the life-transformative message that, 'We're all sitting in the middle of perfect mental health'.

Amy now supports people in recognising addictive patterns of behaviour and thinking and she points them back towards their source of settled wellbeing.

If you get up in your thinking, then you'll be relieved to know that this is a human experience. Everyone experiences this from time to time. When you get caught up in thinking Amy realises it is no big deal ... it will move on .... there is nothing that needs to be done to get rid of it.

In this conversation Liz Scott and Stu Newberry also explore the power of insights. In other words the inner realisation that seems to magically unstick us from habitual, insecure thinking.

Amy also shares how she helps clients to 'lean in' to feelings, rather than be fearful of them. This is a deliciously rich exploration and a must-listen if you find yourself at the mercy anxiety or addictive behaviours.

When Dr Jack Pransky heard about the Modello housing project he realised that he was encountering something unique and extraordinary. Jack is quoted as saying: “In all my years in prevention I have never seen this level of change in people!”

At the time (over 20 years ago) Jack was an expert on Community Prevention work and was writing books based on his expertise.

His whole life started to change when he listened to the women from the Modello community speak at a conference. Jack realised that he was witnessing something profound. It led him to write Modello: A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond and it also took him on a life-long journey of exploring the Three Principles.

I wanted to speak to Jack because I'm inspired by the potential of the Inside-Out understanding in transforming communities. I was delighted when Jack agreed to have a conversation with me I knew I had lots to learn and I wasn't disappointed.

During our time together Jack talks about his life, about his work and he also answers questions from a small group of people who gathered to hear this podcast being recorded.

Jack also spends time outlining his 4 step model for community change. This model encapsulates what is needed for transformation in communities to take place.

Here's a synopsis of it.

Step 1 - Make sure you in your own mental health and experiencing grounded, mental wellbeing. Be certain and steadfast with what you know about the Inside-Out understanding.

Step 2 - Help people settle in their minds. A relaxed mind is one that is able to absorb and listen.

Step 3 - Listen deeply. Listen to the deeper spiritual energy and tune in to what it is saying. This spiritual energy is beyond the core of what we and others know ... allow this energy to reveal the solution to the problem. Stay in the 'don't know' mode until you know what to say.

Step 4 - Don't talk about the Inside-Out understanding or the 3Ps (unless wisdom guides you to do so).

If you'd like to learn more about Jack and his work then go to his website. You can also buy his books there. In this podcast we talk about the following books:

Three years ago I felt an intuitive nudge to go into my local community (Ivybridge)to share the Inside Out Understanding. I had no plan, no contacts and no idea what to do. I just felt a strong  intuitive sense to find a way. It was going to be a 6 month experiment, but the experiment continues to this day.

Since 2020 (the start of the experiement) we've started a Social Enterprise, created Wellbeing Listener courses, received Lottery Funding, collaborated with a variety of community groups and businesses, trained up dozens of Wellbeing Listeners and helped to create a group supporting the lonely and isolated ... and I've written a book.

I don't use social media and I have never sat down and created a plan. I've been muddling my way along, listening into intuition, often feeling scared because I don't know what I'm doing.. so I just keep taking the next step and the next step.

I know (in my bones) that real change in communities comes from people having an understanding that they are much more than they think they are. When people are scared and isolated they build walls and they retreat or attack. When people feel connected, they ooze compassion and love and they reach out to support. I see my role is in helping people realise we are not separate beings but that we are connected to the energy of life itself .... we are all connected.

In the interview my dear friend Otto Collins interviews me about this 3 year journey and what I've learned along the way.

"There is wisdom in addiction."

These words from Charli Wall might seem surprising at first.

Charli has had first hand experience of a traumatic life and how addiction to drugs, alcohol and food became a coping mechanism for her.

A huge shift occurred for Charli when she saw that she wasn't broken and didn't need fixing. This insight was the beginning of a shift in the way she saw life and approached the world.

In our conversation Charli shares the upheaval of her teenage years.

Her brother was killed in a motorbike accident, her father was seriously injured in the same incident.

Charli became her dad's carer and , trained as a psychiatric nurse and battled her own addiction with drugs and alcohol.

Nowadays she supports people (particularly women) through her coaching and support groups. She is an incredible listener and in this interview we explore:

  • What's going on in the mind of addicts
  • How to listen to someone with an addiction
  • How urgent thoughts are not an instruction they are actually a warning of 'over-thinking'

If you want to share the Inside Out understanding in businesses, then you need to know what they're interested in. Businesses are NOT usually motivated by wellbeing or learning about psychology. They aren't interested to learn about the Inside-Out understanding. So what do you do? The answer is you need to start your conversation that inspires their curiosity.

Elizabeth Lovius has spent years as a consultant and trainer. She knows what businesses want and has distilled these areas into three key points.

  • Performance (the numbers)
  • Teams (collaboration and relationships)
  • Innovation (being at the cutting edge)

In this far-reaching conversation Elizabeth explains her 'Five Cs model' and explains how she would use this to engage with a businesses. The five Cs are:

  1. Clarity
  2. Confidence
  3. Collaboration
  4. Creativity.
  5. The fifth C (which is the one that impacts all the others) is Core

Elizabeth ultimately knows that when someone is interested in aligning with their core (one of the five Cs) then their business and their teams will flourish.

Join Elizabeth Lovius, Liz and Stu in a wide-ranging fascinating conversation. As well as businesses we discuss mental health and in one of my favourite parts of the interview (just near the end) Elizabeth ultimately says that everything boils down to 'love'

"When you take away al the concepts and ideas of who we are" .... "what remains of us is love."

Here are some of the resources mentioned in our interview

You've heard of a 'horse-whisperer' - but what about a people-whisperer?

That's how I see Jacquie Moses. She has an extraordinary way of connecting with people, particularly those who feel marginalised.

Jacquie works with many who are on the outskirts of society, like people who are in prison and youngsters on the verge of exclusion.

In this conversation we hear stories of connection and transformation which are based on the power of listening.

Jacquie understands that listening is at the heart of relating and connecting with people. People need to feel heard and listening is the way to do this.

In this interview you'll learn why:

  • Relatedness is more important than having a shared background experience.
  • We are often trained to listen for 'what's wrong', rather than listening for innate health
  • Listening from a place of presence is the most powerful gift you can give to someone.

Here are some of the comments of the people who have listened to the interview:

  • "A really lovely session of magical presence"
  • "Such a warm and settling time. It has pointed me back home, thank you"
  • "Thank you once again Stu and Liz and Jacquie, for a lovely, inspiring session"
  • "Thank you so much Jacquie - such an inspiration"

We're exploring the theme of freedom in this week's In the Convo, with artist Terri Broughton.

Terri only started to describe herself as an artist 3-years ago. She was haunted by the feeling of being a fraud.

She never felt she had the right to be called an artist, even though she (as a teacher) was instrumental in some inspiring art projects in schools that were adopted by the curriculum. It's likely that her experiences as a child (she was orphaned and then abused by her carers) haunted her for much of her adult life.

A couple of years ago Terri picked up a paint-brush and felt an incredible freedom of expression through painting.

The judgemental feeling of being a fraud has disappeared and she now feels free to 'play' and to 'just be'.

The painting above is called 'There Is No Place Like Home'. This painting represents the transition between the old Terri and the new, grounded Terri that dances with life.

In this interview we explore:

  • The difference between being and doing
  • Seeing beyond the fear of being a fraud
  • The freedom of creativity and 'play'

You can find out more about Terri and her art work at her website Terribroughtonart.co.uk

Dr Bryan MceElroy is worth listening to - he's a GP with a different view on mental health and mental illness.

HIs curiosity and studies have given him insight into various states of distress such as depression, anxiety and paranoia and how people can find some peace of mind.

He isn't wedded to the 'medical model'. Instead he explores a wider range of interventions and is inspired by the results.

Wellbeing is something that Bryan is passionate abut. Here's how he describes it:

"Wellbeing is your experience living day to day with a sense of presence and light-heartedness and not getting too caught up in negative thoughts/feelings".

He regularly sees patients who are struggling with anxiety and worry and rather than immediately prescribe medication he wants patients to explore something deeper and more intuitive.

"If you're feeling well in yourself with a spiritual connection with something 'greater' to yourself you'll start looking after yourself."

  • In this conversation we explore::
    What is Wellbeing?
  • The Inside Out understanding and how it can support patients
  • The challenges for GPs and the health service
  • Listening as an important missing piece to mentally well society.

What is left without our thinking?

What happens when we see beyond the labels and identities we have created through our life?

Natasha Swerdloff, works as a consultant in businesses, she is also a writer, speaker and trainer. This is the question she explores with her clients. Rather than looking at what's wrong or broken, she looks to the essence within. It is from this space of connection that healing occurs.

As she says:
"When I speak to people from this space I see into their soul."

I first met Natasha 5 years ago. We were at the London 3P conference and we both ended up with a group of people eating out at a restaurant. We sat next to each other and fell into an easy conversation. At the time Natasha was transitioning away from working as a traditional coach and consultant, she had come across the Three Principles and was starting to engage in a whole new way of working.

Catching up with her after all these years was a real pleasure and as we connected on Zoom I fell into, what I can only describe as a 'love bubble'.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

It seems to me that many people feel lost, insecure and adrift in the world. It seems that many are trying to chase happiness and find fulfilment in the world. It is exhausting.

Rather than turning our attention outwards, what if we looked within and what if we explored some of the most profound questions of the ages?

My guest is someone who regularly reflects on this question with his clients. Sam Jarman is a golf professional, author and writer. Sam asks three questions when with his clients. The questions are

  1. Who am I
  2. What is this?
  3. What is the purpose of life?

Our conversation was so rich and deep I've split this podcast into two parts. We start by exploring the question 'Who am I'? and then in part 2 of the podcast we continue the conversation.

What is it like to live without fear?

Imagine that. Imagine walking through the world without listening to and answering the whispering fears, shoulds and shouldn't that populate your head. What freedom!

Recently Sarah Tyers experienced several months of living without fear and she discovered that life was a playground. For someone with cancer and who at one point feared she might just 12 months to live - living fearlessly seems a contradiction. How can you face death and yet not be scared?

Yet Sarah attributes her incredible psychological freedom to her journey with cancer. When she saw through and beyond the stories she was telling herself about the disease she saw something that struck her keenly:

"It was pivotal seeing the love in myself and realising I was already a radiant human being."

Sarah and I discuss the power of listening for wellbeing. We can listen for wellbeing even if the person in front of us is seriously ill. When we listen out for the resilience in the other person - we are seeing who they truly are.

How well do you know your friends? When I spoke with my dear friend Ivana Culham I was shocked that I hadn't known about her struggles as a mum. Ivana is always so friendly, kind and supportive. I had no idea that she had a near-break-down and burned out as a mum.

Her ideals of a happy family hit rock bottom when she found herself struggling and feeling disconnected with her young daughter. Then when she realised she was about to have twin boys she found she couldn't cope.

In this interview we explore how Ivana started to heal when a friend said to her 'Ivana, there is nothing wrong with you' she became curious to learn more... it led her to the Inside-out understanding.

Now her whole family has adopted a way of talking about the Inside Out understanding and Ivana sees her family as her Wellbeing Listener project.

I've just been on a lovely walk that links dementia-awareness, the outdoors, wellbeing and the city of my birth. Today's podcast is a celebration of this.

My dad has dementia and over the years he has gradually deteriorated. He no longer remembers who I am and he often gets confused finding his way around his own home.

When I take my dad out, he loves to say hello to people, but often gets confused if they strike up a conversation. I'm so grateful to those strangers who realise dad has dementia and continue chatting with him, even if they don't understand what he says. The kindness of strangers is very powerful indeed.

When two dear friends of mine in Exeter (both of whom are passionate about raising awareness around dementia) teamed up to create a walking route around the outskirts of Exeter that adds up to the length of a marathon (26.2 miles) I asked if I could meet them.

The route is split into shorter sections ranging from 3-7 miles each and each section explores footpaths, lanes and villages that circle the heart of the city. I joined them on a 3 mile route linking Clyst St Mary and Clyst St George. We took our dogs and had a leisurely stroll on a sunny late September day.

Here at the Inner Compass Guide we shine a light on wellbeing and Jo Earlam (who's husband has dementia) and Gina Awad (founder of the Exeter Dementia Alliance) both ooze wellbeing - I'm inspired by what they're up to.

What if you were to see physical discomfort and unwanted symptoms as your friend rather than your enemy? What if these symptoms were actually trying to communicate important information?

Physical symptoms can often be wearing and draining. Many of us quickly resort to medication or seeking experts in a bid to rid ourselves of the discomfort.

In this conversation with Rachel Singleton, we explore a beautiful, balancing way of 'listening' to your body and learning its language to help return to wellbeing.

Rachel Singleton is now a holistic practitioner and mentor, but for years she experienced chronic pain and debilitating fatigue. It took some time before she realised her body was trying to communicate what it needed; it was showing through the medium of symptoms when she was in imbalance and disharmony.

In this conversation we explore the importance of listening to your body.

When Sandy Krot suggested that listening might solve the world's problems I sat up and took notice.

Really? Solve the world's problems?

Sandy is no pushover. She works with high-flying businesses, supported companies in overcoming intractable problems and has co-authored a best-selling book (Invisible Power).

When Sandy suggested that something as simple as listening might solve the world's problems, I felt goose-bumps.

I've thought this myself, but then tell myself off for being so naive.Surely it'd take more than listening to make a difference on a big scale?

But what if she's right? What if listening holds the power to move beyond conflict and differing opinions and what if listening is what is needed to access fresh, new and creative thinking?

In this podcast interview we explore how:

  • The single most important area for leaders to improve is listening
  • Most people are only listening to the voice in their head and not the other person
  • We all have the capacity to listen for others.
  • Listening might solve the problems in the world

I often joke that Dicken could read the phone directory and people would listen to him and get something from just being in his presence.

So when I got to speak to him on the podcast about the power of listening I jumped at the chance. He was as every bit as gracious, gentle and humble as I had imagined. I could have talked to him all day.

Like me, he is passionate about listening and the power of listening as a catalyst to touch the deeper intelligence both within ourselves as the listener but also by enabling the other person to experience innate wisdom.

Listening is such a beautiful thing. On the face of it listening appears to be something we need to 'do'. However, when you start to realise that listening is actually our natural state - then it takes the exploration around listening to a different level.

In this podcast we explore how:
-Listening is not about 'doing' - listening is a state of being
-Dropping out of our head and into our heart is a beautiful gateway to connection
-Wisdom is waiting to break through the noise of thinking

You can find out more about Dickens's work on Youtube.

How do you listen beyond the chatter in your head? Do you need to learn a load of tools and techniques to become a better listener?

According to best-selling author Jamie Smart, we don't need to learn something new, instead we need to remember our innate ability to listen and to connect.

When you realise that listening is a natural state then listening becomes a catalyst for connection. As Jamie says:

"Listening is one of the simplest ways for anyone to find their way into a deeper connection with another human or themselves'

Rather than change or fix the story - we can listen and help the other person experience connection. In that space of connection insights naturally arise. Connection is a portal for people to have insights. The route to connection is to listen.

What is the key to listening? It's much simpler than you think. It's got nothing to do with eye contact, or reflecting back what you've heard. Listening has got nothing to do with mirroring someone's actions or nodding in the right place.

The true power of listening is in being present.

Elizabeth Lovius joins me on this week's podcast as we explore listening. When you realise how simple it really is I guarantee you'll listen to everyone differently.

What the world needs right now is a good listening to.

This podcast is one part of a short series that looks specifically at listening. Today I'm speaking former surgeon Dr Giles Croft. We explore how our capacity to listen greatly increases when we understand 'separate realities'. In other words we begin to see how we are all creating our individual interpretation and perception of the world.

In this rich conversation we explore:

  • That our experience is dependent on our mood or state of mind at any one time.
  • The best way to listen is to hear someone beyond the weather of their moods
  • It's about being present with nothing on your mind and just listen

What's the missing piece from the message of Christianity? That was the question Lizzie Paish kept asking herself.

When she came across the Inside-Out understanding, the Christian message began to resonate more fully for her. She saw that the philosophy of Inside Out which is 'to look within' is something that is also present (but often missed) in the Bible.

Bible passages have now taken on fresh energy as Lizzie continues to look within.

For example, the Bible often says ‘Do not be afraid’ or ‘Fear not’. Lizzie sees this as reminding us that when we live in fear we are forgetting who we are.  We forget we are connected to a spiritual essence.

In this fascinating and frank interview Liz and Lizzie explore Christianity through the lens of the Inner Compass understanding.

Russell Pearson is the Deputy Head at an Exeter primary school. He is acutely aware that mental health is a key issue in all schools. He’s determined not to provide a tokenistic approach to wellbeing. He doesn’t want to provide tick-box staff meetings or training sessions.

In this podcast Russell shares his own wellbeing journey. He also explores three areas that have made a big difference to him.

  1. That he was seeing life through a lens. That lens was his thinking. It was a huge eye-opener to discover that no two people experience the same situation in the same way. In other words everyone sees the world through their thinking and not the way it actually is.
  2. The fluid nature of feelings. Feelings go up and down and they are a symptom of thinking. Feelings are giving feedback on the world ‘out there’ feelings just let you know what you’re thinking in the moment.
  3. Wisdom, resilience and resourcefulness is innate. This is probably the key area for Russell. Rather than see wellbeing as something he has to make time to catch or find, he now sees it as his default setting. He clearly sees that everyone is resilient – regardless of the mood they or he is in.

Stuart Newberry is a wellbeing coach, pointing people towards universal consciousness and oneness. His message is 'you are more than you think you are.'

It's a far cry from his former role as a police Detective Superintendent, dealing with some of the most serious crimes in Devon and Cornwall.

What happened?

In this podcast Stu talks about:

  • his time in Devon and Cornwall police and how he remembers it with great fondness. He retired in 2004.
  • working on challenging cases, like murders, rapes and serious assaults. It was a time of hard work, long hours and he witnessed the worst of human behaviour. But it was also a time of tremendous satisfaction, working with dedicated teams and people.
  • how some of the assumptions he had about criminals began to look different. Rather than see criminals as fundamentally bad people, he realised that these were people that were believing thinking in the moment. They were taking thought as an instruction to behave a certain way, they didn't realise that thinking is transient and shifts.

Now as Stu looks forward in his work as a coach, he realises more than ever that his clients are usually looking in the wrong place for wellbeing. They often forget that they are more than they think they are.

What would it be like if everyone knew that they were okay?

That's the message Marie Arymar shares with her young clients.

She often meets with troubled young people, who are struggling with life and are confused about what to do next.

Marie doesn't cajole, or motivate or try to build confidence; she's got a much more powerful and sustainable way of connecting with young people.

She points them back to their inner diamond, to the core of who they are.

In this podcast you'll discover how Marie:

  • Overcame her own challenging childhood to take on a pastoral lead at a college.
  • Saw things completely differently when she came across the Inner Compass.
  • Dropped being a victim when she saw that she wasn't at the centre of every thing. Life wasn't all about her, life was impersonal.

Marie realises that the best support she can be for her young clients is to highlight their wellbeing.

"I have a huge torch and I shine it back on their beautiful diamond and the innate wellness that they've always had and always will have - even when they feel they've lost it."
