Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Marie Ambusk to the show!
A bad experience with a landscaper set Marie on a nearly two-decade journey to make things right. When the street trees in her neighborhood failed after less than 20 years, she asked the landscape company replacing them what happened. The answer, "You get what you get, lady," made her blood boil.
Since then, she's not only become a Master Gardener. She's developed a way to determine if trees are going to fail.
Those street trees had root collar disorder. Once she realized the problem lay in the containers and growing phase, she developed a way to inspect the root systems of containerized trees. Using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), AI, and machine-learning, she's been able to map and grade the root systems of container trees to predict failure with a stunning degree of accuracy. Phase II of her project will focus on using the same GPR technology to map defects in planted trees, saving many hours of labor in excavation to look for problems.
In this episode, Marie shares why customer satisfaction, employee opportunities, and company growth and profit make the difference to your success in the Green Industry. For her, they all boil down to one core issue: establishing trust.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Schylaur Moody to the show!

Levi's Leaf helps Green Industry companies establish and streamline their buying processes, improving efficiency and reducing waste in time, plant material, and money. In this episode, she unpacks how culture matters most, communication is everything, and of course, the importance of procurement for the success of your business.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Rob Treppendahl to the show!
Rob started a landscaping company and quickly fell into a trap that many in the industry have - trying to do too much for too many people, and racing to "hit the million-dollar mark." He did that in less than four years. But that was also the first year his company lost money.
After acquiring a lot of debt (and the accompanying stress), Rob found a mentor who helped him right the ship. Now things run so efficiently that he manages his company from a different state, and he gives back to the industry through his executive coaching.
In this conversation, Rob shares why knowing your numbers, finding (and staying) in a narrow niche, and great marketing set you up for success in the Green Industry.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Scott Geddes to the show!
Scott got started in the tree care industry at the age of 16. After that, he took on an apprenticeship at a major tree care company in his native New Zealand and even worked for a short time in Norway. In 2014, he was New Zealand's New Arborist of the Year.
After that, he bought into and now runs Auckland Tree Services. He also runs Timber Forge, a business that repurposes the trees they've felled into consumer goods like jewelry boxes and cutting boards.
He's become increasingly convinced that removing healthy trees is just not the way to be successful in this business. In this episode, Scott shares why the best companies in our industry measure themselves on things beside profit, they have a long-term plan, and they are invested in educating themselves and their teams.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes John Perlin to the show!
A physicist by training, John set out to research the history of solar power in antiquity. What he discovered, however, was transformational in our understanding of the way people relate to trees.
Those discoveries led him to write A Forest Journey, a book that explains how mankind's relationship with trees has developed throughout recorded history. In the updated edition, published by Patagonia, John goes even further in time, using the fossil record to help us learn about the very first trees on Earth and explaining how humanity's relationship with them impacts us today.
In this episode, John shares how trees (and our relationship to them) are vital for all life on Earth. He also shares why understanding how trees developed can inform the decisions we make today when it comes to tree management, and how there’s an intersection between “good for business” and “good for the environment;” they’re not mutually exclusive.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Ted Glaser to the show!
What started as a way to earn extra income maintaining his family's rental properties turned into a legitimate business. Ted grew Summit Lawns to $1 million in revenue in just four short years after his official launch.
And then he blew it up. On purpose. He said it had become a "Frankenstein business," pieced together from saying "Yes" to just about any opportunity. It lacked focus and, as a result, had a poor culture, struggled to be profitable, and turned over employees consistently.
After finding his lane and deciding to own it, Ted has rebuilt Summit Lawns to nearly $4.5 million in revenue. In this episode, Ted shares why having a clear vision, having your finances in order, and building your team are the keys to success in the Green Industry.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Ryan Hudson to the show!

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Edward Morrow to the show!
Growing up on a farm instilled Edward's love of the outdoors from a young age. He was encouraged to learn another skill, so he studied and tried to earn his credentials as an accountant. But the trees kept calling him back.
A creative by nature, Edward realized that there was a gap he could help bridge; many tree care company owners were passionate about their craft but didn't necessarily know best business practices. Eager to help but realizing that finances can quickly become dull, he created a fictional universe of tree care professionals incorporating these business practices. The book series is called Tree S.T.A.R.S., and you can find it on Amazon.
Edward also consults with many tree care companies about business development and speaks to communities about trees' important role in the ecosystem.
Edward joins the show to share the keys to success from his time as a TRAQ arborist, author, and business consultant: building skills, investing in relationships, and developing great systems and processes.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Mario Cambardella to the show!
With a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture and Master's degree in Urban Planning, Mario comes with some serious classroom chops.
But that doesn't mean he's never gotten his hands dirty; Mario started with Valley Crest (now Brightview) and worked his way up to management before becoming Atlanta's (and America's) first Urban Agriculture Director, addressing the problem of "food deserts" in an urban environment.
Now Mario runs Scapify, a software platform that connects growers to landscape companies directly. This ensures that growers get quality plant material in the ground faster than relying on a "middle man" like a nursery.
In this episode, Mario shares why defining success, planning for that success, and determining the intersection of passion, experience, inheritance, and best contributions ensure you succeed in the Green Industry.

Welcome back to Green Industry Perspectives! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Naomi Zurcher to the show!
Naomi has an amazing story. She grew up in New York City and never stepped foot into a forest until she was married and in her twenties. The wonder and serenity of the forest led her to eventually become one of the first Urban Foresters in the US.
With connections to both Dr. Alex Shigo and Dr. Suzanne Simard, Naomi brings a truly unique perspective to the show. We talked about a different definition of success - what the tree thinks "success" looks like - and how trees are incredibly complex and sophisticated organisms that we need to understand better if we're to practice good arboriculture.

Welcome back! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Robyn Schmitz to the show!
Like so many of us, Robyn discovered a passion for the Green Industry almost accidentally. Her parents ran a flower shop, so she learned plant names and color palettes at a young age.
While studying something else entirely in college, she began working for a garden center to make some money when the realization hit her; she was enjoying her work outdoors with plants FAR more than she wanted her chosen field. Upon realizing this, she changed her major to horticulture and never looked back. Today, Robyn leads High Prairie Outdoors, the company she founded. Averaging between seven and eight figures in revenue and with a team of almost 50 year-round employees, Robyn and High Prairie are forces to be reckoned with.

Welcome back! In this episode, Jay Worth welcomes Dylan Harper to the show!
After graduating college and working with a marketing firm, Dylan quickly learned that not all agencies are created equally. He discovered that there was a seedy underside to the marketing world. Any service industry where the customer doesn't completely understand the inner workings and has to trust the professionals, there is room for that trust to be abused; think about how most of the public views auto mechanics, for example.
Not content to perpetuate bad business practices full of promises but delivering few results, Dylan started Forge Marketing Group. His very first client was a Green Industry company. He discovered how amazing the people in the Green Industry are, and hasn't looked back since.

Who was your mentor in the industry? For our host, Jay Worth, that mentor was Jason Holder.

In this episode, we unpack what that Old School Americana looks like. How do you take care of your people in a way that keeps them around? What does taking care of a customer look like without getting pushed around? And importantly - how do you do the right thing, even when it may be costly?

Justin White, CEO of K&D Landscaping, took over the family business in 2015. Since then he’s grown the company from $2m to $10m in 2021. He says vision and culture are what have helped bring him and his company success.
Vision means having a purpose and a strategic plan for the future. Justin’s ten-year goal for K&D is to have 300 employees and $30 million in revenue per year by 2030. He worked with a business coach to break the ten-year plan into five-year, three-year, and one-year objectives to help him reach $30m. K&D also breaks down its one-year plan into quarterly goals.
Culture is the vehicle for creating buy-in for the company’s vision. K&D Landscaping has built its culture by investing in its employees, which includes 401k, competitive pay, training, and promoting from within, along with other benefits. He says it’s important that supervisors buy into the company’s vision and are equipped with the tools to communicate its vision with their teams.
Justin says the best two things he ever did to help grow his company was investing in a business coach and hiring a full-time HR manager. A business coach can help landscaping executives identify their weaknesses and double down on their strengths. HR managers are one of the main agents of promoting culture. Justin highly recommends that any company with 20+ employees invest in HR as soon as possible.
Noel Boyer takes a very different approach to his business than most owners. To Noel, growth isn’t his main objective. It’s a byproduct of providing his clients with world-class tree care service. He only pays for marketing on a local radio station, and Noel relies on word of mouth to keep growing.
Noel’s company, All About Trees, has consistently had a 13-week backlog of work for the past three years. Due to this, he’s lost some potential clients to competitors. There’s plenty of pressure to grow, buy more equipment, hire more crews, and expand his territory, but this pressure doesn’t faze Noel. To him, true success is looking forward to working every day and delighting his customers with a great experience.
Here are Noel’s tips for tree care service success:
Six years ago David Lewis fell and broke his foot. He quickly realized his days as a professional tree climber were over. Knowing that he still wanted to have a career in tree care service, Davide decided to learn the business side of tree care.
David became ISA certified, pass his Arborist test, and obtained his applicators license. He ended up getting a position as an account manager at a publicly-traded tree care company. After spending four years at that company, David decided he wanted to take his talents to help grow an up-and-coming tree care company. That’s how, in April 2021, he ended up at Orleans Co Tree Service.
David has proven himself an expert climber and now is a tree care sales expert. Take a listen to this episode as David explains:

Along the way, Mike’s gone through the struggle most landscapers go through. You know how to landscape, but there’s a steep learning curve to the business side. Kaitlin Lutz has some startling information, by 2031, 41% of the construction industry will be retired. Recruiting is way below the replacement rate. While this isn’t a stat about the green industry, the fact remains that we too will see a dramatic increase in retirements over the next decade. Company owners are already struggling to find new workers but are attempting to recruit employees the same way they always have been. Kaitlin points out that the new entrants to the labor force are from a very different generation than before. It’s not that Gen-Z isn’t motivated; they’re simply motivated by different values. She urges leaders in the Green Industry to change their approach towards recruiting. Gen-Z is out there and hungry for work. We just need to speak their language.

While Adam had the technical know-how for running a lawn and landscape business, his wife Sarah brought many of the operational business processes they use today. Today Linnemman has 25 employees, even after scaling back. What Adam and Sarah found is that using “profit-first” methodology, they were able to reduce the amount of employees they had while increasing profits.

However, Ryan sees so much potential for lawn care and landscaping, not just because of the boom in the past year, but also because of the technological advances the industry is embracing.
Kelly shares her journey from working at her parent’s landscaping company, to taking a leap of faith and creating her own agency to help green industry businesses grow.
