Robert Lustig, MD, MSL is a Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lustig has become a leading public health authority on the impact sugar has on fueling the diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome epidemics, and on addressing changes in the food environment to reverse these chronic diseases.

In his New York Times best selling book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processes Food, Obesity, and Disease, Robert documents both the science and the politics that have led to the current pandemic of obesity and chronic disease. In the Fat Chance Cookbook, Robert provides practical examples for applying healthy eating principles with recipes by Cindy Gershen.

Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with basic and clinical training relative to hypothalamic development, anatomy, and function. Prior to coming to San Francisco in 2001, he worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. There, he was charged with the endocrine care of many children whose hypothalami had been damaged by brain tumors, or subsequent surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. Many patients who survived became massively obese. Dr. Lustig theorized that hypothalamic damage led to the inability to sense the hormone leptin, which in turn, led to the starvation response. Since repairing the hypothalamus was not an option, he looked downstream, and noted that these patients had increased activity of the vagus nerve (a manifestation of starvation) which increased insulin secretion. By administering the insulin suppressive agent octreotide, he was able to get them to lose weight; but more remarkably, they started to exercise spontaneously. He then demonstrated the same phenomenon in obese adults without CNS lesions.

The universality of these findings has enabled Dr. Lustig to weave these threads together into a novel unifying hypothesis regarding the etiology, prevention, and treatment of the current obesity epidemic, and the role of our environment in the biochemical changes that promote weight gain. This has led him to explore the specific role of fructose (half of sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup) as a specific mediator of both chronic disease, and continued caloric consumption. His acclaimed YouTube video, “Sugar: The Bitter Truth” continues its popularity with the lay public.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Lustig went to Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He completed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in 1983, and his clinical fellowship at UCSF in 1984. From there, he spent six years as a post-doctoral fellow and research associate in neuroendocrinology at The Rockefeller University. He has also been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In 2013, Dr. Lustig received his Masters in the study of Law from University of California, Hastings to enable him to impact the food industry through policy change.

Dr. Lustig has authored 125 peer-reviewed articles and 73 reviews. He has mentored 20 pediatric endocrine fellows, and trained numerous other allied health professionals. He provides endocrinologic support to several protocols of the Children’s Oncology Group. He is the former Chairman of the Ad hoc Obesity Task Force of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, a member of the Pediatric Obesity Practice Guidelines Subcommittee of The Endocrine Society, a member of the Obesity Task Force of the Endocrine Society, a member of the Pediatric Obesity Devices Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a member of the Bay Area Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, and a member of the Steering Committee of Health Foods, Healthy Kids of the Culinary Institute of America. He also consults for several childhood obesity advocacy groups.

Dr. Lustig lives in San Francisco with his wife Julie and two daughters. Spare time (what little there is) is spent cooking, theater-going, and traveling.

He also is chair of the Stem Cell Reseach University Maastricht (SCRUM) department. He did his PhD thesis at CARIM on the role of vitamin K1 and K2 in bone metabolism and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Schurgers is currently working on Vitamin K Research. His research work includes molecular biology, biochemistry, animal and human nutrition, pharmacology, and clinical studies in the fields of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.

His project line aims to elucidate the role of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in vascular remodeling and calcification, and how this is initiated and propagated. Key cellular events of SMCs include phenotypic switching, oxidative stress, inflammation and formation of extracellular vesicles. The regulation of vitamin K-dependent protein biosynthesis, its sites of action and its putative relationship with remodeling and calcification is insufficient to understand the pathogenesis of vascular ageing at a level that allows the development of novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.

Charles Brenner, PhD is the Alfred E Mann Family Foundation Chair in Diabetes and Cancer Metabolism at City of Hope National Medical Center. In 2004, Brenner, then a faculty member at Dartmouth College, discovered nicotinamide riboside (NR) to be a vital precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is made available by nicotinamide riboside kinases (Nrks) that are conserved between yeast and humans. In 2007, Dr. Brenner’s lab discovered a second pathway by which NR is converted to NAD+ and showed that NR can extend the lifespan of yeast cells by virtue of elevating NAD+ levels and increasing the activity of the NAD+-dependent Sir2 enzyme.

In the past decade, Dr. Brenner has made multiple seminal contributions to NAD+ metabolism, which include engineering a yeast strain to convert inexpensive NAD+ precursor vitamins into NR, solving the crystal structure of human Nrk1, developing the methods for quantitative NAD+ metabolomics, and demonstrating the activity of oral NR in animal models of fatty liver disease; obesity; type 2 diabetes; diabetic and chemotherapeutic neuropathy; heart failure; and central brain injury. Dr. Brenner also led the first clinical trial of NR, which established safe oral availability in humans. He is currently focusing on the maternal and neonatal effects of oral NR and translating animal discoveries into evidence-based safe, human clinical practice for human conditions of metabolic stress.

Deb Matthew MD, America’s Happy Hormones Doctor, wears many hats as a best-selling author, international speaker, private practice doctor, wife, and mom of 4 boys. She helps her patients restore their health by addressing the root cause of their symptoms (including hormone imbalances!) instead of just treating diseases with drugs.

After suffering for years with exhaustion and irritability that prevented her from being the wife and mom that she wanted to be, she refocused her medical career to help others get their hormones back in balance. Dr. Deb combined her background in medicine with her interest in fitness and nutrition to create a complete medical wellness approach using scientifically-based treatments to help her patients restore their energy, libido, mood, and memory, as well as lose weight and discontinue many of their prescription medications.

Dr. Deepa Verma is double board certified in family medicine and integrative holistic medicine. She graduated magna cum laude from The College of NJ, and is a graduate of Rutgers Medical School: formerly known as Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Verma completed her family medicine residency at Somerset Medical Center, and was elected chief resident. When she is not busy raising her three boys, Dr. Verma enjoys music, the beach, healthy cooking, reading, exercising, and hopes to one day travel the world. Dr. Verma is an accomplished dancer and tennis player, and enjoys being competitive in any sport or game. She has always harbored a passion for healthy and happy living, and instills those same personal values in her patients. Dr. Verma’s philosophy and approach to optimal living resonates in how she practices medicine: ”wholistically.” Spreading the wealth means spreading the health.

In 2013, Dr. Verma founded Synergistiq Integrative Health. After years of feeling unfulfilled by treating patients traditionally, Dr. Verma decided to change course—following her passion to educate and heal each individual as a whole, rather than a fragmented and dissected collection of systems. Today, Dr. Verma is deeply committed to the importance of integrative medicine, and practices exactly what she preaches: living her life the same way that she expects her patients to. Synergistiq Integrative Health represents peace, renewal, and rebirth, as the practice was born during a challenging time in Dr. Verma’s personal life. From the beginning, Dr. Verma’s goal has been to create a practice that could give patients an opportunity for health and happiness. Dr. Verma strives to enrich the lives of everyone she meets, as she understands the frustration and angst of patients who are sick and tired of feeling tired and sick.

Dr. Verma is an author and blogger for several publications, regularly appearing on Bay News 9 to discuss current health topics. She filmed a documentary about integrative medicine for Voices in America, hosted by James Earl Jones, and is working on the pilot for Plant Based Medicine. Dr. Verma additionally serves as a medical consultant for the online publication “Greatist,” and is a key opinion leader for Pathway Genomics.

Dr. Goodenowe’s research into the biochemical mechanisms of disease started in 1990. His curiosity about the biochemistry of life is as insatiable today as it was 30 years ago. In those 30 years, Dr. Goodenowe invented and developed advanced diagnostic and bioinformatic technologies, designed and manufactured novel and natural biochemical precursors, and identified biochemical prodromes of numerous diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and cancers of the colon, pancreas, ovary, breast, lung, kidney, liver, stomach, and others. And he is just getting warmed up. Dr. Goodenowe is now going beyond disease and the detection of biochemical dysfunctions to diagnose and the correction of biochemical dysfunctions to treat disease. Dr. Goodenowe’s new focus is to defeat the entropy of aging by creating strategic biochemical and biofunctional reserve capacity in advance of known disease risks such that the human body can maintain the physical and biological functions of life indefinitely and without disease.

Dr. Ginsberg completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine in North Carolina before Houston’s sunny climate and the world renowned Medical Center brought her to Texas. Dr. Ginsberg has broad and deep experience providing comprehensive obstetrics and gynecology treatment, which is the basis of her special interest in optimizing methylation and prenatal genetics.

As an Obstetrician/Gynecologist for over twenty years, Dr. Ginsberg has witnessed many negative trends in the health and wellness of the general patient population. She has become most concerned about the increasing levels of toxicity observed in both men and women of preconception age, which seems to be coupled with less awareness surrounding the importance of genetic health, diet, and lifestyle in preconception and pregnancy. These evolving negative trends have resulted in her integrating functional medicine into a clinical setting, while still ‘delivering babies’. With over 20 years of experience in the medical field, Dr. Ginsberg has created ways to combine the research and benefits of functional medicine into practical strategies to share with practitioners that treat women in preconception and pregnancy. Her goal is to empower practitioners and patients with the knowledge that can have a profound effect on future fertility, and improve the health of future generations.

Dr. Rosenberg has been involved with drug research since 1991. Having studied the mechanisms of cancer treatment failure, the following concept has become blatantly apparent to Dr. Rosenberg.

There are many substances that are toxic to cancer cells in vitro (outside of the body, in a culture medium), including chemotherapy and intravenous antioxidant therapy. These therapies, however, are more often then not, ineffective in vivo (inside the body). The primary reason for the ineffectiveness is that tumor blood flow is poor, resulting in a tumor that actually receives very little of the cytotoxic therapy that is being administered. In addition, poor tumor blood flow is associated with higher grade tumors and greater incidence of metastasis.

Dr. Rosenberg has since concentrated his efforts on improving blood flow to the cancer, while administering cytotoxic intravenous antioxidant therapy. In addition to using vasodilating therapy such as carbogen and isosorbide dinitrate, Dr. Rosenberg has just been granted approval status for an IND (investigational new drug) using Angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is frequently used in Japan in conjunction with chemotherapy to improve tumor blood flow.

Dr. Rosenberg recently appeared on Fox News in 2006, for inducing remission on a patient with metastatic lung cancer (to liver and spine) that was refractory to chemotherapy.

Today's episode of Redefining Medicine features features Ken Sharlin, MD. Dr. Sharlin began his career as a neurologist whose training through prestigious research-oriented medical centers took him down a traditional path. Dr. Sharlin worked as a neurologist in private practice, in large hospital-affiliated practices, emergency rooms, intensive care units, and inpatient wards. His diverse experience has allowed him to sharpen his skills in the management of complex neurological conditions, from multiple sclerosis, to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, migraine, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and fibromyalgia, among others. In whatever direction his interests took him, he has always maintained one hand in clinical research as principle investigator in large, multi-center trials to help bring new treatments to market and broaden our understanding of medicines already approved. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals (Ethnicity & Disease, 1993 vol 3(4): 337-43; Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, 1999;8:271). He has been a guest speaker on many occasions over the years, and is often asked to share his knowledge and expertise with his peers and the public.

Dr. Sharlin’s personal and professional life took an important turn when, as a cycling enthusiast, he completed rides over 100 miles in one day, the MS 150 Bike Ride, and RAGBRAI, the ride across Iowa in one week. This led to the sport of triathlon, and because of his competitive spirit, Dr. Sharlin trained to compete in the pinnacle of multi-sport races, the Ironman Triathlon, to become not once, but three times a finisher. As his fitness and his awareness of the impact of lifestyle on health was changing his own body and brain, Dr. Sharlin became increasingly conscious of problems within his field of neurology, and with medicine in general. He realized that available treatments either focused on symptoms exclusively, or controlled the disease process only if prescribed drugs remained in continuous use. He learned that medicines designed to prevent premature death, heart attack, or stroke, were often more likely to fail an individual. He came to understand that even surgery, with its “to cut is to cure” motto, does not address why the illness occurs in the first place. Unwittingly, he had learned to accept the notion that we don’t know why we get sick and there’s nothing we can do about it except follow the conventional path. And he was beginning to question this notion.

Then, he found functional medicine. “Functional medicine,” to quote Dr. Mark Hyman, “is medicine that just makes sense.” It is medicine that connects mind, body, and spirit. It helps each of us find the imbalances that have directed the trajectory of our lives down the road towards illness, and shines a light that guides each one of us personally, by helping to re-map and re-route the course back toward health and vitality. Functional medicine is based firmly in science. It embraces food as medicine, as well as sleep, movement, stress, gut and immune health, hormones, and our mitochondria, the energy-producing engines of the cell. It recognizes the relationship between our genetic blueprint and the environments both within and outside of our bodies that can promote either the expression of health or disease-causing genes, even across generations.

Trained first as a classical pianist, he went on to obtain two degrees, with honors, from the Conservatory of Music of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, before obtaining his medical degree in 1989 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He then trained in psychiatry at the world-famous Mayo Clinic, beginning his practice of child, adolescent, adult, and forensic psychiatry in Evansville, Indiana in 1993. In addition to his conventional medical training in medicine and psychiatry, Dr. Cady has subsequently received additional training in Age Management Medicine from the Cenegenics Medical Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada, adding that modality into his practice. Dr. Cady’s main clinical focus is not on just treating the psychiatrically ill back to health, but is increasingly devoted to helping children and adults achieve total wellness and optimum levels of performance through the integration of mind and body for peak performance, using all of the possible healing options in the scientific and medical literature. In the spring of 2005, and following these principles, Dr. Cady founded the Cady Wellness Institute, which opened in its new facilities in Evansville on July 1, 2005. Dr. Ken Sharlin’s rapid rise as a writer and thought leader in the circle of holistic health, especially in areas pertaining to the brain and neurological illness, has its roots in his Princeton, New Jersey, childhood. His father, a pediatrician with a passion for the craft of magic and illusion. His mother was a special needs teacher who exposed him to the arts. Dr. Sharlin was influenced by both sides. He was a writer from a young age whose education was cultivated by a combination of science and literature. He began his career as a neurologist whose training through prestigious research-oriented medical centers took him down a traditional path. Today's episode of Redefining Medicine features Nathan Neil, MD. Dr Neil is a Board-Certified Family Physician, and also the Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine (now called the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine). From the time that he began medical school at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, it has always been his passion to try to help as many of his patients as possible. Dr Neil is never satisfied with sending patients home with the cliché: “Sorry, we just don’t have any answers for you.” Dr Neil believes that conventional medicine has many answers, but sometimes they aren' t enough.

Dr. Neil started his medical career as a family physician providing the most comprehensive care that he could. Over the years, he found that other disciplines (some of which were already included in the scope of medical practice, and some of which were considered tangential) held the promise of providing useful answers for those patients who did not respond adequately to conventional medical care. Slowly his practice evolved into something new, that did not really have a name, and he called it Complex Medical Problem Solving. Over time, he found himself working mostly with those unfortunate patients who had not received a clear diagnosis from conventional medicine and were suffering with persistent and debilitating illnesses. These included Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Lyme disease with its co-infections, Autism, and all varieties of Chronic Pain, amongst others.

Despite his many years of clinical practice, he remains optimistic that he can help every single person who comes through his door.
